Community Wise This year Community Wise in Old Town is celebrating 50 years of serving the community and is hosting an open day on Thursday, 3rd December starting at 10am. Thousands of people of all ages and from all walks of life have attended activities hosted in the centre over the years. The open day will also be the opening of the newest facilities, and will allow the community to see the latest changes as well as find out about various events and activities going on each week. Community Wise is a provider of community services to Eastbourne. One of the aims of the charity is to help to promote community spirit, and so it actively encourages the development of community groups and works in partnership with other agencies. Community Wise hosts a monthly village market and a number of regular groups – including various ones for children from the very youngest ages upwards, dance, art, calligraphy, quilting, exercise, slimming and singing groups, and support groups. On Friday mornings from 11am-1.30pm there is a new session which is open to people to drop in and visit. This offers refreshments as well as the opportunity for company. A number of rooms and two large halls are available to hire at certain times. www.creativitycardsandcrafts.co.uk The building in Ocklynge road was purchased by the local stakeholders from YWCA of Great Britain when theLabyrinth, YWCA withdrew 6 The 7 Mark fifteen Lane, years ago; the Eastbourne BN21 4RJ community work was allowed to continue seamlessly 439769 and01323 has subsequently expanded. The work on the very last area requiring repair and updating – at the back of the premises – is just reaching completion. This last stage of the improvement has increased the indoor space available, and will also provide a fantastic new play area for sports and activities for children and young people. Over £150,000 has been raised toward this final stage of the refurbishment, during which two new rooms have been built in what was previously wasted space, and a 15m square outdoor facility for sport activities established. This will have an all weather surface and lines for sports, and new surrounding fencing and outdoor lighting. The open day on 3rd December is an opportunity to celebrate the last 50 years of service to the community, to thank the many people who have helped to make the latest changes happen and for everyone to look at what’s taking place at Community Wise now. All are welcome from 10am onwards.

John Napier: Stages, Beyond the Fourth Wall Multi award-winning set and costume designer John Napier brings theatre and art together in a new exhibition: Stages, Beyond the Fourth Wall. Napier’s innovation and distinctive style are responsible for some of the most iconic designs in theatre: the horses in Equus (photo), the barricades in Les Misérables, the helicopter in Miss Saigon, the outsized junkyard in Cats, and, of course, Starlight Express. Stages encompasses these theatre achievements alongside Napier’s art works. The collection includes costume designs, three-dimensional pieces based on his theatre work, and sculptures that have been created in parallel with his career. John Napier began his career in the 1960s and has had a lifelong passion for art and creativity.

He later studied under the influential designer, Ralph Koltai at Central School, and his career led him to create sets and costume designs for some of the longest running shows in London’s West End and on Broadway. Napier is an Associate Designer at the Royal Shakespeare Company and notable productions have included Macbeth, The Comedy of Errors, King Lear, Once in a Lifetime, The Greeks, Nicholas Nickleby, Hedda Gabler, Peter Pan and Mother Courage. He has worked on multiple productions for the Royal National Theatre such as The Party (Olivier’s last performance at the Old Vic), Equus, Trelawny of the ‘Wells’, An Enemy of the People, Peter Pan, Candide and South Pacific. Napier has designed for opera including Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera. He also designed the Captain EO video starring Michael Jackson for Disney and created and co-directed the spectacular Siegfried & Roy Show at the Mirage in Las Vegas, followed by Steven Spielberg’s film, Hook. John Napier’s design awards include four Oliviers from nine nominations, a BAFTA, and five Tony Awards for Nicholas Nickleby, Cats, Starlight Express, Les Misérables, and Sunset Boulevard. CONCENTUS SINGS CHRISTMAS: TURNING TIN TO GOLD It hardly seems possible that Christmas is about to be here again! How the years tumble round quickly. As we acknowledge and mark the seasons we celebrate certain milestones within times passing. Wedding anniversaries, for example, are key milestones and we recognise them by progressively allotting worth to each year that follows the nuptials. From paper being the gift to celebrate the first year of marriage to platinum for a 75th year stretch. It’s good to recognise both achievement and sometimes survival! In the same way Concentus – Eastbourne’s ‘choir with a heart’ – is in an especially celebratory anniversary mood as it rejoices in having sung together since 2005. Ten years of marriage would herald in a gift of tin, that might not seem initially to be of much value but Concentus would disagree.
A choir is a little like a marriage, as the sum of the whole is greater than all the parts that make it successful. Adrian White, Concentus Musical Director, would strongly agree with this principle. Not one person of the choir is of more importance than another. There are no prima donnas here, just a very diverse group of people who love singing together to achieve a spirit of community and of concentus (which means voices in agreement and unity). For 10 years, as this choir has developed, they have learnt not only to read and translate written music into song and to perform in public, but also how to care for one another. Through this they have turned their tin to gold because their performances and activities have produced treasure for others. This year Concentus’ main beneficiary, the JPK Project situated in Old Town, will have received over £22,000. This money will be used to fund the dream of providing homely supported living accommodation for people with learning difficulties. Will you support this Choir as they perform both in Eastbourne and Seaford this Christmas season? Their performances are proving extremely popular since they have moved their performance time from evening to 4pm. Time for an uplifting early evening musical concert and then home for dinner! The programme is a wonderful mix of modern and traditional seasonal favourites, along with one or two surprises. Pieces will include both the sacred and the secular, soloists, small groups, funny bits and places where you as an audience member can join in with well-loved carols. You can find all the details about performance times and buying tickets on the flyer on this page. Perhaps, rather than being in the audience, you might entertain the idea of joining us as a choir member in January when rehearsals start again? We meet on Monday nights (7.30pm) at Upperton United Reformed Church on the corner of Watts Lane and Upperton Road. New members are always made very welcome – you don’t need to read music to join, just the ability to learn and a willingness to join in. Please phone our friendly secretary, Evelyn, on 01323 643358.

Fish course – Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require wellbodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well. Spicy dishes – You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to complement these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes.

Veggie main – There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese course – There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. A view from the Potting Shed hen we were kids my brother christened our rather sorry old artificial tree the Silver Lurch, on account of its colour and list. Artificial trees have improved enormously since then but most gardeners do prefer the real thing. There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year. Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best? Well there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs. The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines. Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do ic o op f

THE WELSH ONION (Allium Fistulosum)
Firs are the best choice for a British Christmas. If you want the best, and you can find one, plump for Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium. The Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) runs the Noble Fir a close second. It is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemonscented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out. Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! A toppled six foot tree, a couple of gallons of water and a hundred or so baubles make a seriously large mess...I know this to be true because several Christmases ago I was the person clearing it all up at 2 in the morning...don’t make my mistake! Merry Christmas! By Rachel Leverton to d

The Welsh onion never forms a rounded bulb but does produce many long, white- based scallions (salad/spring onions). It is often referred to as the Japanese Bunching Onion. It is extremely hardy and should last many years. Its small onions are available for salads any time of the year. It’s probably referred to as Welsh because it resembles small leeks, but it originates from the orient and is most popular in China and Japan. If growing from seed, chose a light, well drained soil sheltered from winter winds. Sow from April to August in its permanent position. Divide every two or three years, retaining only the youngest portion. Seed is available from Thompson & Morgan (Ciboule Arrow Onion), Ebay or via the Internet.
make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties.

A Good Read
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes If you prefer to read a book before seeing the film adaptation then this is your chance to discover one of next summer’s highly anticipated films. 26-year-old Lou Clark still lives with her parents in the quiet market town she grew up in. Almost deserted in the winter, the town’s one draw is an old castle, and when we meet Lou she works in the local tea shop serving the coach loads of tourists who come to visit. With a quirky dress sense Lou never really feels as if she fits in, and as a teenager longed to travel the world. However circumstances meant that she could never bring herself to leave. After losing her job she reluctantly takes a job caring for Will, a young quadriplegic man injured
in a motorcycle accident several years earlier. She is told the job is just for 6 months, and despite a rough start she decides to stick it out. Soon an unlikely bond develops between Lou and Will. A romantic novel, this also deals with the sensitive issue of disability, and the descriptions of Will’s day to day life are well written with brutal honesty and little sensationalism. Things take a darker turn when Lou learns the reason why her contract is only to be for 6 months. She sets out to bring Will new experiences and remind him of the simple joys of life: not easy for a wheelchair bound man whose ideal way to pass the time before his accident was skydiving or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. As a reader you are drawn into the lives of these characters and the development of their relationship is believable. In the hands of the wrong writer this plot line could turn out to be very twee and cliché but Moyes does not fall into this trap. The resulting novel is engaging, difficult to put down and will lead you to appreciate the small wonders of life. By Willow Coby

Father Christmas... did you know? The garments worn by Father Christmas are based upon the Fly Agaric mushroom, which used judiciously, on tongue and temple by shamans in Lapland, enable those wise, altruistic men to go on out-of-body journeys so that they can bring back gifts of healing! These red and white growths can exchange hands for as many as five reindeer I’m told, and even the urine of those wealthy Lapps who party on them, gives pleasure to those who are wont to drink it. Having been a subordinate Claus for many a year in Eastbourne, I have a particular interest in the jocund,

LOOK OUT FATHER CHRISTMAS!
This is a busy time of year for Father Christmas. He will be rushing around checking his list of good boys and girls. Planning his present deliveries and making sure his reindeer are ready for the big night. It’s a good job he has been preparing all year. Father Christmas is not getting any younger. So with all his lifting of heavy bags of toys and getting stuck in old chimneys, he has to take care of his back. We all get caught up in the ever increasing run up to the festive season, but it’s worth looking after ourselves and following good chiropractic advice.
Don’t shop till you drop This applies to us, more
than to Father Christmas. Shopping really aggravates back problems. Wandering around the Arndale Centre, carrying all those Christmas goodies can cause joint aches and muscle stiffness. The best thing is to pace yourself, take a break when you need to.
Walks can help gently mobilize the back. Bed rest is a thing of the past. It’s usually best to keep active. Father Christmas will have to be careful on those roof tops.
Good posture helps avoid injury in the first place. Avoid lifting and twisting at the same time (especially if you’re carrying heavy toys). It’s best to bend your knees and brace yourself by holding your tummy tight. Working in cramped spaces (chimneys) or having bad posture can cause very mild but constant wear and tear. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration affects the whole body, even the discs in your back! The recommended minimum is at least 4 pints of water per day. Ice helps to ease any immediate sprains and strains. An ice pack (or rooftop snow) should be lightly wrapped so it doesn’t freeze the skin (a tea towel will do). It should then be placed against the injury and must not be left on for more than 10 minutes at a time. Don’t ignore it! Pain can be a warning sign. If you hurt
yourself (e.g. from sudden sleigh stops), it’s always best to seek expert advice and treatment as soon as possible. Pain is an important warning, don’t ignore it! As a treat for Father Christmas (or one of his helpers), leave your Old Town Crier out this year. He can read these tips whilst he enjoys his mince pies and sherry.

Eggnog
When I was a little girl I was addicted to old American Christmas films (actually I still am). People always seemed to be drinking eggnog, and it sounded cosy and Christmassy and very American, and though actually I had no idea what it was I longed to drink it too. In fact eggnog traces its roots back to a 14th century English drink called posset. This was a drink of hot milk curdled with ale (bleurgh). Later in history eggs were added. Milk and eggs were expensive commodities in England and so the drink went out of fashion. When the American colonies were formed there was land a-plenty for chickens and cows and so it regained popularity over there. The American plantations, sustained by slaves, meant that rum was plentiful too and the drink became alcoholic and was enjoyed by the masses. In spite of its highly questionable history it remains for me the epitome of a festive drink – creamy and sweet; a Christmas cuddle in a glass.
Preparation time: 20 minutes plus cooling and chilling. Serves 8. Ingredients: 700ml whole milk (I’ve tried it with semi skimmed and it works well too), 240ml double cream, 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 vanilla bean pod, split and seeds removed, 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish, 5 yolks, separated, 130g granulated sugar, 175ml Dark Rum or brandy, Cinnamon sticks for garnish. Method: In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine milk, cream, cinnamon, vanilla bean, vanilla seeds, and nutmeg. Bring slowly to the boil. As soon as it boils remove from the heat and leave to cool so the flavours can infuse. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat the egg yolks and sugar until pale and thick and ribbons form when the whisk is lifted. Strain the milk mixture then slowly whisk it into the egg and sugar mixture and continue to mix until everything is combined and smooth. Add the rum or brandy, and stir. Refrigerate overnight if serving chilled. The argument rages over whether eggnog should be served chilled or warm. Personally I like it warm but chilled is good too. Either way, serve and garnish with whipped cream if desired, grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick.

Food Banks
Hunger and poverty. Many of us won’t associate these problems with our own society but it’s a fact that 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line. Five years ago food banks had scarcely been heard of, but today more than a thousand operate across the UK, giving assistance to people in need of basic supplies to survive. People need to use food banks for a variety of reasons: redundancy, illness, benefit delay, changes in benefits, unexpected bills, underemployment and family breakdown, to name a few. In today’s world of zero hours contracts and steadily rising food and fuel prices, an increasing number of people are finding themselves in need of help. The Trussell Trust – the UK’s largest network of food banks – fed nearly a million people in 2013-2014, over a third of which were children. Typically, clients are referred to food banks by front line care professionals such as doctors, social workers, health visitors and the police, who are trained to identify individuals in crisis. They issue vouchers which are exchanged at food banks for emergency food. Though all food banks may not operate in the same way, the Trussell Trust provides emergency rations for a minimum of three days.

All food donated to food banks comes from members of the public. This could be from individuals like you and me, but partnerships are also formed with schools, churches and businesses. Large collections are made during Harvest Festivals and there are also collection points in many supermarkets available throughout the year.

Donating is easy. All you need do is purchase a few extra items with your weekly shop, then drop them off in the collection boxes situated near the checkouts. Most people decide on an amount they want to spend and keep on buying until this is reached! If you purchase budget brands, your money can go further and help more people. Items purchased should be non-perishable and in date – so anything in tins, packets and jars. If there isn’t a a food bank near you but you would still like to help, you can make a cash donation, which can be done online in many cases. Once food is received at food banks, it is sorted and packed into boxes by volunteers, who also guide clients to agencies able to help them with longer term problems. None of us can do everything to solve the social problems around us, but all of us can do something. Donating to a food bank is one example. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Sussex Downs College hosts Business Breakfast Sussex Downs College hosted a business breakfast on Tuesday 3rd November at their Kings Bistro and Restaurant in Eastbourne. The breakfast offered over 40 key local business leaders and Council representatives a chance to meet Mike Hopkins, the new Principal and Chief Executive of the College and find out about his first term in post. Guests enjoyed a continental breakfast served by the College’s catering students and heard from Mike about future plans for the College, and its commitment to developing the employment skills of its students, “It is my intention to bring the voice of local businesses back to the College in order to guarantee we are meeting the requirements of the local economy. We are a big institution that has a great deal to offer but we need to listen to the views and ideas of our local business community. The Business Breakfast was the first opportunity for local businesses to contribute their thoughts on how SDC can develop its curriculum and Apprenticeship offer to guarantee students leaving the College will meet the requirements of the local economy.” As well as hearing from Mike, guests were also given an insightful overview from Sarah Hoyle, Personnel and Development Manager of The Grand in Eastbourne. The hotel has developed strong links with the college and currently has five apprentices in post, including Ryan Lee, who, at 18, is the youngest apprentice in

the country undertaking a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Hospitality Supervision & Leadership in a 5* Hotel. Sarah said, “The Grand Hotel has developed a great working relationship with Sussex Downs College. Together we are developing a pipeline of talent which will see our hotel and apprentices flourish. It’s an exciting time for the College as it works to become the provider of choice for more and more local business.” As well as listening to the commitment that the college holds to developing its links with local businesses, guests were also asked to contribute to round table discussions regarding employability, recruitment and skills investment opportunities. Lord Brett McLean, a notable figure in business on a local, regional and national level, attended the event and was pleasantly surprised by what Sussex Downs College has to offer, “When I arrived this morning I was expecting to see a ‘normal’ College. Instead I have been thrilled to discover this incredible hub of potential economic generation. The statistics of the College are incredible; 900 employees, 1,300 students and connections with approximately 700 businesses really means that SDC is a powerhouse, generating economic opportunity of untold proportions. I have been extremely impressed with the College and look forward to being further involved in the College’s objective to meet the needs of local businesses,” said Lord McLean. Sussex Downs College will be looking to host regular business events of this kind and would be delighted to hear form any businesses who would like to get involved. Please contact Rose Miller on 030 300 39474 or email at rosemary.miller@sussexdownscollege.ac.uk if you would like to be involved in future events or if you would like to arrange a visit from an Account Manager to discuss your particular training needs.
