Celebration Time for the Prince’s Trust Team The 11th Prince’s Trust Team finished the programme on a high note with a presentation evening at the Elim Family Centre in December 2014.
The team of young adults, aged 16-25, bonded in the 12-week Prince’s Trust Team Programme, run in association with Sussex Downs College. Over 12 weeks, the group participated in team-building exercises, hosted charity events and improved their job prospects by roleplaying interview scenarios and working on their CVs. The end of the Programme was celebrated with an awards presentation evening in December, attended by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Janet Coles and Peter Field, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex. open Gardens to Raise FUNDS for Macmillan Cancer Support The new Sussex Cancer Support Centre in Brighton is well on the way to completion this Autumn. Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group, which organizes the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, has contributed £23,700 to the appeal so far. The appeal now needs a further £500K, so the 4th annual garden trail this summer will help swell the coffers. The trail will take place on 25th and 26th July. 2015 will be a rather special event as the patron, TV Celebrity Gardener, Christine Walkden, will actually be in

John Virtue’s The Sea are largest paintings ever displayed at Towner
British painter John Virtue’s major exhibition The Sea, which opens on Saturday 17th January, will break the record for the largest paintings ever to be shown at the South East’s biggest gallery’s top floor space. In this comprehensive selection of Virtue’s study of the North Sea, the oversized canvases presented a logistical challenge for Towner’s technical team, who have devised a way to transport the works up to the second floor gallery space. The largest canvas, The Sea, Painting No.10, measures 244 x 488 cm, and the three largest paintings (The Sea No.9, The Sea No.11 and The Sea No.12) all measure 640 cm wide. 12 of Virtue’s canvases will take over the 400-square-metre gallery. The exhibition will also include 24 paintings on paper and 100 sketchbooks.

The exhibition opens from Saturday 17th January and lasts until 12th April 2015. On the day of the exhibition opening, Towner also welcomes renowned broadcaster and art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon, who will be talking to Virtue about his fascinating career in an exclusive event held in the exhibition’s gallery space at 2pm. Towner’s award-winning purpose-built contemporary art gallery opened 5 years ago and boasts approximately 1,250 square metres of display space. Many of the works from The Sea were first exhibited in 2014 at Marlborough Fine Art in London and at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich. John Virtue, The Sea, 17 January-12 April 2015, Towner, Devonshire Park, College Road, Eastbourne BN21 4JJ, free entry. Open Tues - Sun, and Bank Holidays, 10am - 5pm. Look up! And get more space at home for just £325 We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draftproof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! A view from the Potting Shed eople often ask me, “Is there something in your garden you couldn’t live without?” My reply is always, “My greenhouse.”A greenhouse has many benefits, chief of which for me is that it extends the gardening year. With a greenhouse you can potter in your garden all year round, and grow a range of plants which simply wouldn’t thrive without the extra protection. Before choosing a greenhouse you will need to check whether your local planning authority imposes any restrictions. While you don’t normally need planning permission, building regulations do have to be adhered to. Buy the biggest greenhouse you can afford that will fit comfortably on to your plot – you will always fill it! But even if you can only afford a tiny one – my first one had a base of just 4’ by 5.5’ (1.2m by 1.7m) – it will still be a worthwhile investment. The aluminium-framed ic o op f

Salsify/Scorzonera Tragopogon Porrifolius/Hispanicus. Salsify is more commonly called the “vegetable oyster” or “oyster plant” because its roots are said to taste like oysters. It originally came from France and is closely related to its Spanish cousin, the Black Scorzonera. Both should be grown in fine deep soil with no added manure similar to exhibition carrots and parsnips. Both Salsify and Scorzonera should be sown in March or April with a light covering of soil. Thin to four then finally eight inches apart. Both will fork if the ground is stony. Harvest from August to December. Care must be taken when lifting the roots as they are easily broken. Once lifted use quickly as they often loose their flavour, especially if the roots are damaged. Both can be baked, steamed, boiled, or used in soups and stews. Both are a good source of vitamin C and potassium. Scorzonera is also said to be a good companion plant to to repel carrot fly! Seed can be obtained from most good garden centres.
types are very sturdy and relatively cheap. Woodenframed constructions are more attractive though, and often better in a small garden where everything has to earn its keep. Western red cedar is good because it lasts a long time and weathers really well. Greenhouses are even more useful if they are heated. I started out with paraffin heaters, but found they produced a lot of condensation and were messy and smelly. Electric heating is best, and very economical if you fit a system thermostat so that it only switches on when necessary. Apart from heat, the most important factor is ventilation. In high summer this is vital to prevent your plants from cooking. Automatic arms which open the vents at a predesignated temperature are really useful. External blinds are also very good as they prevent sun scorch. Finally, fit staging along one edge of the greenhouse for your pots, and dig a soil or gravel bed on the other side for things like tomato plants. Now all you have to do is plant some seeds and invest in a few tender perennials.

Take care if garden paths are icy. 3 Towards the end of the month you can sow bedding plants such as Antirrhinums and African Marigolds. 3 Order or buy summer flowering bulbs, corms or tubers (ie: tuberous begonias) that need starting off under glass or indoors. 3 Transplant into small pots any rooted cuttings from fuchsias taken last autumn. 3 Inspect Dahlia tubers every few weeks. Towards the end of the month take cuttings if you have a heated greenhouse or a heated propagator. A daily spray of tepid water will encourage the growth of new shoots.

The Karate Academy The Karate Academy is run by Don Came, an Old Town resident and 7th dan black belt. With 40 years experience in the martial arts and a background in sport and exercise science, Don has been teaching, training and researching in the Eastbourne area since attending Brighton University in 1994. At the Academy we offer a variety of disciplines from martial arts to strength and fitness.
Karate
In many ways karate is the original mixed martial art! Our class numbers are kept small for optimal learning and we offer specialised junior (7+) and adult (16+) programmes. Great for spatial awareness, strength and co-ordination whatever the age, regular Karate practice offers many psychological and physiological benefits, including reduced stress, improved mobility and strength. We believe that Karate is first and foremost a system of personal development and self-defence and our teaching reflects this.
Women’s circuit training
Our specialised Women’s circuit classes combine elements of martial arts, boxing and traditional circuit training for an intense, fun workout. Great for fitness and strength!
Kettlebells
Kettlebells offer possibly the ultimate in strength and conditioning training. With weights ranging from 2kg to 64kg you can work the whole body in a fraction of the time it would take using more traditional methods.

Cupid V’s Football!
Cupid needs more support this Valentine’s Day because research shows that a third of men would sideline love in favour of sport!
A survey in Men’s Health magazine showed that nearly a third of men would rather be playing sport than getting frisky in bed! Perhaps Cupid can hope for more sport injuries to keep men at home. Only 6% of the men in the survey had been injured through sex, compared to 99% who had been injured through sport! And it’s not just Cupid who is suffering, employers watch out – almost half of men have missed work because of a sporting injury! The most dangerous sport in Britain is‌ Football! Research shows that bad challenges and tackles cause a third of sports injuries. So why is sport taking such a toll? Our local chiropractor from the Lushington Chiropractic explains, “Football is often seen as a relaxed, low-risk sport, but in reality Sunday league games are just the opposite.â€? Over half of the men involved in the survey had been injured on the pitch, and most were suffering with ongoing “nigglesâ€? due to an old injury.
So what advice do our chiropractors have to avoid serious injury in the first place? Warm up properly before you play and include a range of general cardiovascular exercises in your training regime to build up slowly. If the only exercise you get is playing in a match then you will push yourself too fast too quickly, increasing the risk of injury. Dr Revell also suggests using the R.I.C.E. formula to deal with minor injuries. Rest and support the injured joint. Ice packs (wrap ice in a cloth, apply for 10 minutes maximum, then leave off for 20 minutes before re-applying – stop if it is painful). Compression and Elevation of the injured joint. Some people are sports-mad, whether it’s watching, playing or talking about it – it dominates their lives. But let’s hope that Cupids’ wins this February 14th, not football! Chiropractic offers a long-term solution. You can find out if it can help you, by calling the Lushington Chiropractic on 01323 722499 for a consultation.

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH ADDICTION (PART 2)
What happens in the brain is this: when we first decide not to indulge in an addictive activity, we feel calm; however, there is a structure in the emotional brain, called the amygdala, whose job it is to notice when anything out of the ordinary is happening and raise the alarm if it could mean danger. On this occasion, it notices that we haven’t had our usual cigarette, drink or shopping-channel fix. A sequence of chemical events takes place in the brain, which results in our being flooded with arousing emotional memories of how wonderful it was to smoke, drink or order goods when watching the shopping channel – and so we succumb. Once strong desire is experienced, we recall only expectations of pleasure associated with the addictive activity. This makes our craving powerful, even overwhelming, instead of the very mild physiological discomfort we experienced at the start. But the memories are usually false because, as we know, when we feel we are being deprived of something we want, we exaggerate the joys of it. So we remember being the life and soul of the party and not being sick and having a hangover; we remember the thrill of buying new clothing and not the self-loathing while stuffing it, still in its glossy packaging, at the back of the wardrobe. In other words, the satisfaction is all in our heads. Human Givens practitioners help people change their expectations by relaxing them and then guiding
them to visualise the downsides of the addictive activity – such as disabling illness, loss of loved ones, financial hardship, etc, instead of the false memories of fulfilment. When only these more realistic associations come to mind on experiencing a craving, withdrawal symptoms remain mild physiological ones, such as the sensation of gentle butterflies in the stomach or a furry tongue. After a while, if all false memories are rejected and only the fearsome ones are accessed from our emotional memory stores, craving ceases altogether. People then need to be helped to find ways to meet their needs more healthily again, such as by starting or resuming social activities (most people with addictive behaviours gradually give less and less time to what they previously valued); facing whatever may have led to the addiction in the first place, such as a troubled marriage or work difficulties, and finding solutions; and learning ways to deal with future stress – or temptation – without relapsing. This will usually involve changing attitudes towards problems or setbacks, learning to see them as challenges that can be coped with; learning to calm down aroused emotions instantly; and being ready to take “emergency action” to distract oneself from temptation, such as going for a walk or calling a friend. When people genuinely realise that they have been hoodwinked into false expectations of pleasure and fulfilment from an addictive activity, they find that they can stop, and not miss it, however long they have been in its thrall. Lynda Bryer (GHGI, MSc, BA Hons) runs her own private practice as a Human Givens therapist. Contact Lynda on 01323 897287 or email: lynda3hg@hotmail.com

FOCUS ON BUSINESS Eastbourne’s first organic hair salon opens Our purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced by the processes and ingredients required to manufacture a product. Ethical, environmental and health related issues are increasingly considered, as consumers look to protect both themselves and the planet. This has most notably led to the rise of the organic movement, which has traditionally been associated with food. More recently, however, its influence has come to bear in a host of other areas, including cosmetics. Whilst “natural” beauty treatments have been available for some time, consumers are now expecting a wider variety of alternatives derived from officially certified organic ingredients. This has come to include hair care products. For the first time, these are now available in a salon environment in Eastbourne. Local hairdresser, Donna Carson, has recently launched Chameleon Organic, a Hair Studio on Seaside that covers all aspects of traditional hairdressing, using certified organic products. “We only use the Organic Colour Systems range,” explains Donna, who has over 15 years of experience in the hairdressing industry. This includes shampoos and conditioners, colours and styling products. “The range includes the first-ever collection of permanent colours made from the maximum amount of certified organic ingredients possible. Using these natural ingredients leaves your hair looking healthier, gives it a glossy shine and results in a longer-lasting colour.” Conventional colour treatments contain ammonia and paraphenylenediamine, (or PPDs), which damage hair and cause allergic reactions. The semi-permanent dyes at Chameleon Organic have neither, whilst the fully permanent options contain only 0.25-0.05% PPDs, (compared to an industry standard of 2%). This means they are not only better for the environment, but also safe for expectant mothers and allergy sufferers. It also spells the end of the potent odours and danger of skin staining associated with ammonia based treatments.
26
The obvious benefits of organic products are one of the major reasons behind the launch of Chameleon. It is an approach that is adopted throughout the business, not just on the treatment shelves. Where possible natural products are always used, from organic refreshments to recycled stationery. Donna adds “Organic products have always interested me, given their potential impact on our health and well-being. Opening my own salon has given me the opportunity of introducing a new range and a unique hairdressing concept to Eastbourne.” Organic options often come at increased costs. Prices at Chameleon, however, compare favourably with other salons. Styling for ladies starts at £15, (cut and finish £27.50), whilst styling for men starts at £10.

Feather Their NestS – It’s National Nest Box week Did you know that there is a National Nest Box Week? This year it takes place from 14th-21st February. The event is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology. The idea started in 1997, following fears about birds losing their natural nest sites because of lots of trees being cut down, old buildings disappearing, gardens being “tidied” and old houses being repaired. The Trust wants us to put up nest boxes so that we can protect the wildlife we have, and encourage even more birds to come into our gardens. It is estimated that there are now over 5 million nest boxes in the UK designed to help everything from Robins to Owls. Different types of nesting box attract different birds. So in a box with small holes, you might get Blue Tits, Nuthatches, Redstarts or House Sparrows. Boxes with larger holes may encourage Starlings, Spotted Woodpeckers and perhaps even Little Owls; and in very big boxes you might see Kestrels, Jackdaws, Stock Doves and Tawny Owls. There are also open fronted boxes which appeal to Robins, Spotted Flycatcher and Pied Wagtails.
including http://www.bto.org/ the British Trust for Ornithology site. Here are some handy hints for siting your nest boxes: l Do not put nest boxes of the same type close to each other l Open fronted boxes should be hidden from view l Make sure cats cannot get into the boxes l Consider putting a metal plate around the hole to deter squirrels l Boxes should be sheltered from the weather l Keep the boxes away from bird feeders l Place between 1 and 5 metres high l Use screws that will not rust. February is an ideal time to put boxes up, because pairs of small birds prosper towards the end of the month. You are also helping, however, if you put boxes up at any time of year, although 1st August to the 31st January is the time under Bird Protection Law when nests can be cleaned out, and any dead eggs found destroyed. By Susan Brookes-Morris
Imagine how lovely it would be to watch the birds going in and out of your boxes and hopefully some young ones hatching there. If you are careful and quiet, you can even peek inside the box from time to time when the eggs are incubating, as most birds will sit tight. If you want to count the eggs, observe in the early morning and wait until the female bird flies off for a quick meal. You can choose to buy some nest boxes from your local pet store or garden centre, or make some. Instructions for building boxes are available on many internet sites

Playing Fair – What is Fairtrade Fortnight and why do we need it? Fairtrade fortnight takes place this year between 23rd February and 8th March 2015, and aims to continue to raise awareness and change behaviour around this important topic. Research shows that whilst 78% of the UK population recognise the Fairtrade Mark, over 50% still do not actively choose Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is about getting better prices, working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities, so that they have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. It is now possible to buy around over 4,500 products

officially branded Fairtrade including: Tea, Coffee, Bananas, Chocolate, Gold, Flowers, Cotton and Sugar. Sadly however, only 1.2% of cocoa and 10% of tea globally are traded on Fairtrade terms. Did you check the packaging for the Fairtrade logo when you last bought some tea? The Fairtrade mark means that the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been produced by small scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet social, environmental and economic Fairtrade standards. These standards help to protect workers’ rights and environment. They also ensure payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price for the commodity, and an additional Fairtrade Premium which is invested into the business or community projects. Small scale farmers and workers are amongst the most marginalized globally, and Fairtrade helps them through trade, not aid, providing stable income to help them plan. Fairtrade only certifies small scale farmer organisations for products such as cocoa, cotton and rice, but does certify plantations with larger numbers of employees for goods such as tea, bananas and flowers. The standards required for larger organisations include allowing them freedom of association and collective bargaining, and prevention of discrimination and child labour. The producers decide how the Fairtrade premium is invested. Often this will be in schools, transport, health care and better business equipment and practices. There are over 1.4 million farmers and workers in 1,140 producer organisations within the Fairtrade System. These are across 74 different countries and four continents. Fairtrade.org.uk would love people to get involved during Fairtrade fortnight. Here are some suggested activities to increase awareness and raise money. Create a Fairtrade Trail around your local area highlighting those selling Fairtrade products. Build a model of something funded from Fairtrade premium such as a school or health centre, and display this in a prominent place to make it a talking point. Have some fun creating a special event. This could be a film evening showing the Fairtrade film, or something more elaborate such as a Come Dine With Me experience. Tasting events featuring Fairtrade produce are also popular. eliminating waste. It helps the Motor Vehicle students gain skills in repair work, and it encourages exercise and a healthier environment by offering the bikes to those for their College commute. The Motor Vehicle department currently has around 30 bikes in its possession for reconditioning. One student who has put the initiative to good use is Dale Campbell, 18, from Eastbourne. The MET (Bodywork and Mechanical) Level 3 student had an old BMX bike but hadn’t ridden in five years. Before the summer holidays, he was given a reconditioned bike and now cycles the 15-minute journey to College. Eastbourne Borough Council met Dale at Sussex Downs College this month, to see the initiative in action. Paul Kay, Curriculum Leader in the Motor Vehicle department, presented Dale with a brand new helmet to accompany his new bike, along with a certificate, for achieving 100 per cent attendance in the last three years – a fantastic accolade the College is extremely proud of. Whilst some bikes, like Dale’s, have been reconditioned for future use, others have been transformed by the Motor Vehicle Department, including a new and unique electric bike.
