If walking is your thing, then check out the Eastbourne & Lewes Walk Fest in September, more details are on page 36. On the water it’s Eastbourne Regatta from 25th to 27th August, and from 8th to 9th September it’s Eastbourne Steam Punk, see page 21. Find out what’s on at Towner Gallery on page 12, and there’s a new exhibition at the Heritage Centre on page 30. All this and so much more in the What’s On pages, from 40 to 49. A Thrilling Thursday for Fans at Airbourne The thundering Chinook, sky-scraping Typhoon and brand new Belgian Air Force A109 will be kicking off a thrilling Thursday at this year’s Airbourne, Eastbourne’s international free airshow in August. The Belgian Agusta anti-tank helicopter will be rotoring into Eastbourne with pyrotechnics for the first time, over all four days from 16th – 19th August, along with daily performances from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Typhoon, The Blades, Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers, Spitfire, Strikemaster jet and The Tigers Parachute Display Team. Heavy duty chopper, the Chinook, will be displaying its incredible manoeuvring capabilities on Thursday and Friday, while the Red Arrows will be delighting fans with a triple-bill of displays from Friday to Sunday, in a year which celebrates 100 years of the RAF. Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said, “We can’t wait to kick off the airshow in style with our fastest jet and heaviest helicopter of all! It’s also the perfect day to get first glimpse of the displays and see the impressive Belgian A109 for the first time – watch out for the flares!” Historic jet fans can also look forward to a historical programme featuring the Mustang Shark, Norwegian MiG-15, Vampire and the deep rumble of the Blenheim bomber. The RAF Tutor trainer returns, along with the Fireflies, Gyrocopter and the highly acclaimed Pitts Special display from former Tornado pilot Rich Goodwin. For a glittering finish, copter fans can enjoy Airbourne’s first twilight helicopter display on Sunday night with smoke and pyrotechnics from OTTO of O’Brien’s Flying Circus. The Fireflies duo also returns to bring magical night-time pyro-aerobatics to round off the four day flying programme, before a stunning firework finale at 10pm.

On the ground, keen fliers can experience life in the hot seat as the RAF opens up the ‘Operation Virtual Reality’ dome at Airbourne for the first time. Opening on the Thursday morning, fans can beat the queues and try out the brand new experience, which includes flying the latest F35B Lightning 2, overseeing a parachute drop of humanitarian aid and intercepting hostile aircraft in a Typhoon jet. Airbourne returns from 16th – 19th August with a military exhibition, helicopter pleasure flights, children’s entertainment, Bandstand concerts, film screenings, fireworks and much more. Entry is free. To beat the crowds and for prime views, keen aviators can upgrade to first class hospitality with High Fliers @ The Aviator Club from £99 per person, offering an exclusive three-course lunch, afternoon tea and cake, plus a fully stocked bar in a private marquee and viewing area on the Western Lawns. Alternatively, reserved seats are available in the Exclusive Seating area all day from just £10 per adult (£6 per child). Flying times and an exclusive 100 prize draw to celebrate the centenary, will published in the official souvenir programme, available at the end of July. Airbourne 2018 is sponsored by Bright Bricks, Boundless by CSMA and Euro Self-Drive, however opportunities are still available for businesses to support the show and receive exposure to hundreds of thousands attending the show. A view from the Potting Shed There are some flowers I love because they are showstoppers, others because of their evocative scent, and some because they are unusual. Michaelmas daisies don’t tick any of those boxes, but I love them anyway. They are bright, cheerful, and completely undemanding – at home in the poorest, driest soils, and bees and butterflies love them! They get their common name from their flowering period, which peaks at Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael on September 5th, though they will carry on flowering well into late autumn. This means they are great for injecting colour into borders, which can start to look a little washed-out and dreary in late summer. Until the mid-nineties, Michaelmas daisies were all known scientifically as asters, but then some were reclassified. Look out for the name Symphyotrichum, as many popular varieties now carry that name instead. The gardener credited with popularising the Michaelmas daisy was Ernest Ballard. Many of the varieties he

Fuchsias are seen in bloom from summer through to autumn and look good as part of summer bedding, grown in containers and hanging baskets. Most fuchsias are hardy, tolerating the winter weather. They have attractive, pendant, colourful flowers of varying pinks, creams and mauves. The name fuchsia came from the 16th-century botanist Leonhart Fuchs who called the vivid purplish red colour fuchsia; the plant took on the same name. Magenta is in fact the same colour and is interchangeable with fuchsia. There are several tricks to keep fuchsias blooming – plant in premium quality soil, don’t overwater, watch for fuchsia gall mites and remove affected plants immediately, pinch back the stems after they have produced flowers, this will produce more blooms. Fuchsias will reward you all summer long.
cultivated are still available and bear the names of his family members. “Ada Ballard” is named for his sister and is lavender blue, “Marie Ballard” is a pretty pale blue double bloom named for his wife. He is also responsible for “Prosperity” and “Peace”, rose-pink and deep mauve respectively, which he named straight after the First World War. If you want a tallish variety suitable for the middle of the border, try “Little Carlow”, which grows to about 90cm and produces masses of violet-blue blooms. One of my favourites for the back of the border is “Calliope” which has striking black elegant stems that reach heights of 2m, smothered in delicate lilac flowers. A good small variety is “Beggarten” which is pale blue, compact and clump-forming. “Tonga” is also smaller and is a lovely deep purple, which looks great in a container.

JOBS TO DO IN AUG & Sept
3 As soon as strawberries have finished
fruiting, remove dead leaves and straw, along with the runners, unless you want to create new plants from these. 3 Give wisteria a summer prune. 3 Sow several pots of parsley seeds now ready for use in winter, once the leaves are cut for use they will not regrow. 3 A job not to do – watering a brown lawn is a waste of water, it will regrow and recover as soon as rain does fall.

Connecting with the community in Old Town The new St Wilfrid’s shop is much more than just another charity shop A new era began in Old Town on 19th June when the former Trend DIY shop in Green Street re-opened as the new St Wilfrid’s Hospice Community Shop. Trend had been well loved by the local community, with its owner always doing his best to serve the DIY needs of the local people. When it was announced the shop was closing there was not a little dismay, but that eased once the locals heard the news that St Wilfrid’s was going to take on the unit. Speaking the day after the shop opened, Community Shop Manager, Karen Lower, said that she was very pleased with the initial response from the local community. ‘We’ve had a lot of interest in the days leading up to the opening and a lot of positive feedback. People tell me they are thrilled and excited that Wilfrid’s is here as part of the community.’ Karen is very clear that this is a community venture and she is looking forward to the shop becoming a place for the community, whether as customers or, indeed, as volunteers. She believes the reason people are so positive is because of the amount of goodwill towards the work of St Wilfrid’s: ‘Many people have had personal experience of the great work the hospice does, either personally or through a family member or friend. It’s very much a local and much loved charity we are representing here.’
and any DIY tools. So if you are having a clear out of your shed, then see if there’s anything there which might be of use to someone else through the shop. It’s clear that St Wilfrid’s really wants the Old Town community to feel a real part of this venture, and there are lots of ways for people to get involved. ‘We have volunteering opportunities in the shop, sorting stock, merchandising, even testing equipment. We’re also hoping to sell retro games consoles and we need someone to test them. If anyone has a spare couple of hours on a Saturday and would like to spend it playing computer games as a volunteer, then we may have a role for you,’ says Karen. If you want to get involved and support this worthwhile charity as a volunteer then pop in to the shop and speak to Karen, or contact Hollie Attridge at the Hospice on 01323 434205. The commitment is not onerous. As Karen says, ‘Ideally we would like a session per week and a session comprises either 9am – 1pm or 1pm – 5pm.’
Despite there already being a number of charity shops close by on Albert Parade, Karen believes her shop is different. ‘We won’t be selling clothing or footwear; we are solely concentrating on furniture, small electrical items, specialising in music centres, DVD players etc., as well as kitchenware and crockery.’ And in a link back to the shop’s former role there is a plan to try and stock some DIY products. ‘Of course this all depends on what donated items people will bring in,’ says Karen. But the shop will be open to accepting packets of screws, bolts, half-full tins of paint

High Tea at Church Lane Tea Room Principally home to ‘independents only’, Seaford is a breath of fresh air for those of us seeking a somewhat ‘chain-free’ approach to the café scene. No more so is this apparent than in one of the latest additions to our bustling town. Church Lane Tea Room has a new owner – our town’s answer to Paul Hollywood. Everything from bread, to cake to quiche and jam is expertly homemade by Steve Mitchell. A handful of tables, a church pew and designer ‘mis-matched’ chairs set the tone for relaxing – and gorging on a stonkingly good high tea. Mr Mitchell has ensured a local seaside vibe resonates over the scrubbed floorboards, with local artists displaying their wares alongside shelves of homemade jams and marmalades. Décor aside, the food puts this eatery firmly on the map – I’m quite certain that I would eat this memorable high tea in a derelict warehouse, such is the impression Steve’s baking made upon my guest and me. It is well advised to arrive ravenously hungry. Salmon, goats cheese, and thick slices of ham make up the basis of the moreish homemade-bread, open-style sarnies. Leave ample room for the scones, and four different cakes. It’s obvious Mr Mitchell and his waitress enjoy welcoming customers, and a bustle of conversations hummed about. ‘Making new friends is lovely, our customers might arrive alone but will leave with a new friend.’
DEADLINE for NEXT OCT/Nov Issue: Friday 7th Sept
Making room on my ornate fine bone china plate, I noticed that I had ignored my inner-sensible. There was a slim chance I wasn’t going to be able to fit in a slice of bakewell, a three-tiered Victoria sandwich, chocolate brownie AND an apricot-cakey-delight… (only a slim chance). Fear not, we were told. Anything you can’t manage here can be boxed up and taken with you. Not ones to be beaten, my guest and I dug deep, all in the name of the review you understand. We need to take a moment to talk about the Vic sandwich… If you class yourself as a baker, or indeed a gorger of Victoria sandwich, may I throw Church Lane into the ring to be considered the bar with which all Victoria sandwiches should rise to. This light, fluffy sponge with a buttercream-to-homemade jam ratio is nothing shy of perfection. Surely this is what WI gold-star standard tastes like? It’s a scientific balance of flavours that before this moment had meant nothing to me! This place is a foodies’ delight, and a cake-lover’s haven. What a delicious addition to Seaford’s vibrant café culture – Mr Mitchell has cracked it.

Eastbourne Steampunk Come one, come all! Marvel at the curiosities, revel in the entertainment, indulge in the delights! There will be entertainment, live music, beer tent, stalls and a children’s fair. Spanning from the Wishtower slopes to the Bandstand, this event aims to astound, dazzle, entertain and delight visitors of all ages. The evening of the Saturday 8th September will also host an adult-only night’s entertainment; a masked ball venue to be confirmed, featuring music, dancing, burlesque and much more! Steampunk means different things to different people. To some it is a fashion, style of dress, a persona. To others it is art, craft, design, even a complete lifestyle. At it’s heart and in it’s beginnings Steampunk is a genre of science fiction, branching out of the Cyberpunk of the 1980s but set in a pseudo-Victorian style era instead of the stark futuristic period of Cyberpunk. Imagine a world where the Victorians where far more technologically advanced than they were in reality, steam-driven airships travel the skies, immaculately dressed adventurers and explorers armed with aether powered ray guns, clockwork horseless carriages transporting ladies and gentlemen around large gothic industrial cities, mechanical time machines. Steampunk comes in many different styles; for some it’s all top hats, tailcoats, goggles and gears; for others it’s pith helmets, khaki jackets, moustaches and steampowered blunderbusses; for others still it’s lab coats, gadgets, magnifying glasses and mad inventions! these themes and personas blend seamlessly into a wild, wonderful, bizarre retro-futuristic world where the march of time and technology took a very different route to the one we know today. Steampunk has been incorporated into movies, music, literature and art, even the gaming world, and is gathering a substantial fanbase in all of these things. Movies like ‘The time machine’, ‘Wild wild west’, ‘Hellboy’2 and ‘Dark city’ are all a good place to start if you want to learn more. www.steampunkfestival.co.uk/ Saturday 8th – Sunday 9th September 2018, 10am to 5pm. There’s big news happening in Seaford Jermyn & Sons have been serving the local community in Seaford and surrounding areas for over 40 years. Thus one could state the case that they have become part of the fabric of the town. Managing Director, Tim Jermyn opened up his Seaford car dealership in 1977, initially as a Citroen Main Dealer, but soon made the move to become a Ford Dealer in 1979. To this day Jermyn & Sons continue as a Ford Authorised Service Repairer, with Ford trained technicians and the ability to carry out warranty or service when you need it. There’s big news for the people of Seaford as Tim has secured the exciting MG franchise and thus in doing so has become the only MG Dealer throughout the whole of Sussex. Tim has recognised the history behind the iconic MG octagonal badge and believes that it is once again a motoring force to be reckoned with. Jermyn & Sons are still an independent family run business, priding themselves on maintaining their original goals. They continue to offer great value and customer service by putting their customer aftercare first! They truly understand times are changing and plan to stay up to date without comprising on their founding goals. Tim and his knowledgeable team would like to invite you and your family to come into their Showroom, located a stone’s throw away from Seaford Railway Station, in Claremont Road, to view the amazing range of brand new MG cars. This new MG range of affordable vehicles includes the stylishly compact MG ZS SUV with its full 7 years / 80,000 miles warranty – priced from only £12,495; the sporty family fun MG GS SUV – priced from just £15,095; and the trendy but affordable MG3 with its ultra-low insurance – priced from only £8,695. Check out Jermyn & Sons opening times and drop into the showroom for further information.

Community Wise
In July 2018, the England football team made it to the final four of the World Cup competition. All over the country people previously uninterested in football became keen and millions of people watched the England-Croatia semi-final game on the 11th July. The country seemed united in hoping that the team would win and proceed to the final. However, when they weren’t victorious, people didn’t abandon the team. Good will meant that fans stayed in the stadium singing for over an hour after the game finished, and the team were lauded as exceeding all expectations. Everyone seemed behind them, and completely with them in their disappointment.

Community is a feel-good sense of belonging. It might refer to the people living in a location (or country) or to a group of people with similar interests (like football), or to collective ownership – a fraternity of people who have similar aims as well as interests. It can also refer to the condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common, or to an identity. Community Wise in Old Town Eastbourne is a much loved and well used community centre designed to serve the community and promote community spirit. We aim to foster a sense of belonging and acceptance. Wise Buys, our community shop, is the place for a bargain, and we have regular people who come in to be with people and to make friends. Over a five-month period we have been given a phenomenal £8K (in both coins and more substantial sums) toward the cost of a replacement boiler for the centre after the previous one broke in February. This money came from extremely generous local people who support the centre: the community at Community Wise. Come and visit, Join in. The temperature is guaranteed to be warm. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.
