Hello... ...and welcome to the June and July issue of the Eastbourne Town Crier. I have some good news – I’ve now increased the distribution of this magazine, so some of you will be receiving this for the first time – I do hope you enjoy reading it! In this issue we have news from Eden Blue on page 12 and details of up and coming exhibitions at the Towner Art Gallery, see page 26. How about visiting Follers Manor Open Garden to help to raise money for charity, see page 24? Or perhaps you fancy doing some volunteering? Our article about volunteering on page 8 will inspire you and funnily enough, the 24th and 4th Eastbourne Rainbows are looking for two new Lead Volunteers – could this be you? If you’re feeling energetic, it’s the Eastbourne Triathlon on Sunday 10th June and the annual Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK on the 17th June, see page 11. It’s also the Colour Run on July 1st and on Friday 6th July it’s the Tour of Sussex cycle race. And if you fancy even more outdoor activities, then on the 7th and 8th of July it’s the 999 Emergency Services Display on Western Lawns, whilst the Old Town Fête and Eastbourne Pride are both on Saturday 21st July. There’s so much going on in Eastbourne and even more to see and do on the What’s On pages, 33 to 41. Fran Tegg, Editor

Who Needs a Holiday? According to the office of national statistics, holidays are an almost universal feature of life in the UK, but this has not always been the case. Whereas farming offered seasonal changes, factories established during the industrial revolution meant that work continued relentless. Although most people were granted Sundays off work and people had Christmas Day and Good Friday off work, that was it. Bank holidays weren’t created until 1871 and very few people had any additional paid time off work. Trade unions campaigned for paid holiday time but the UK was slow to follow the example of other European countries. In 1936, other European workers who had been in the same employment for a year had paid holidays of 6 days and further pressure from the unions meant that by the end of the 1930s French employees had 2-weeks paid holiday time, twice as much as UK workers who achieved, only in 1938, a week’s paid leave (as long as they worked in occupations covered by trade union agreed wages). The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 states, ‘Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay, but it wasn’t until the end of 1998, a full fifty years later, that the UK finally implemented the EU working time regulations. This ensured an entitlement of 4 weeks’ paid holiday time for full-time workers and prorata for part-time employees. What people do on their holidays has also changed over time. In the middle of the 19th century, growing prosperity and railways opened a whole new world for people who could afford it. Day outings were popular. In 1841 Thomas Cook arranged his first “package” holiday – for temperance supporters, which was a train trip to Loughborough. But the idea of a package holiday really started in the middle of the 20th century and was booming business for travel agents until fairly recently. Foreign holidays became popular for a

4

number of reasons. After the war, some countries were hoping to rebuild their economies and built hotels hoping to attract tourism. There were also plenty of unused airplanes – increased supply resulted in a reduction of the price of plane flights. Border controls were relaxed and beach destinations were popular. A more recent development has been the low cost airlines and, with this, a change to city breaks instead of beach holidays. Apparently we now spend less time on our holidays – the traditional two week holiday has been replaced with 7- or 10- day holidays - but we have more of them (68% more holidays since the mid’90s), and what we do with this time has changed too. Wellbeing, activity and winter sports holidays are really popular and city breaks have grown to their current level of popularity, similar to that of beach holidays in the past. Some holiday destinations have experienced a drop in demand. Tourism in countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Kenya and Tunisia have been affected by concerns over security and terrorism. ‘Staycations’ is a new word in our vocabulary, referring to a holiday in the UK (or even at home) rather than one away. When you return home from your summer hols, remember that Community Wise is always here in Ocklynge Road and open to the community – it is always a great place to make friends and to meet friends and catch up. Some of our regular groups close during the school holidays, but others crop up in their place, including our fantastic School’s Out Activity Days for children and parents. Year round we welcome everyone at Wise Buys our terrific community shop where you can buy clothes to take on your holidays, and at Gather, our pop-up café on Friday mornings from 11am-3pm, where you can come and share your experiences. The centre hosts a food market on 14th June and 12th July, and the Old Town Village Market on the 30th June and 28th July. Refreshments are available all morning and local produce and quality goods are for sale. Come and be community at Community Wise!

MAGENETISM

by Ruth Figgest Six-times Bridport Prize finalist and Eastbourne resident, Ruth Figgest, debuts with a ‘gloriously wry’ novel of a motherdaughter relationship recounted in reverse.

in her fifties, takes a phone call at work telling her that her mother, Caroline, has died. From this point the story moves backwards in time, with each chapter shedding light – and dramatic irony – on those it follows. Their story unfolds over more than 50 years against a backdrop of sweeping social change. Feisty and argumentative, they roll with the punches, surviving car crashes, awkward family gatherings, relationship disasters – and plastic surgery. This is an extraordinary debut – brutally honest, gloriously wry and unexpectedly uplifting.

Mother and daughter Caroline and Erica are best of friends and worst of enemies. Sharply observed and darkly comic, Magnetism exposes the stigma and experience of mental health problems, infertility, homosexuality and single parenthood, and notches a riveting new path through this most fundamental of family ties.

Ruth Figgest was born in Oxford and grew up in the USA. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Sussex. Her fiction has won or been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize six times; her story, ‘The Coffin Gate’, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Previously a clinical audiologist and senior manager in the NHS, Ruth is Chief Executive of a charity in East Sussex. She lives in Eastbourne.

Set in the American mid- and south-west, Magnetism opens in 1976 when the young teenage protagonist, Erica, is in a psychiatric hospital following a suicide attempt. Fast forward to the present and Erica, now

National Volunteers’ Week

1st – 7th June

This year, Volunteers’ Week is about volunteering for all – celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. Could you volunteer, and why should you bother? Studies have found that taking time out to help others reduces stress levels, improves immunity and increases life-satisfaction. This is because helping someone else interrupts tension-producing patterns and replaces it with a sense of purpose, which leads to positive emotions. Whether you’re looking for a change in career or advancement in your current one, volunteering is an excellent way to boost your prospects. Volunteers tend to create a positive impression, appearing more innovative, creative and skilful.

In an Adweek article on the state of recruitment in 2015, they found that recruiters rank volunteer participation higher than personal presentation, political affiliations and spelling and grammar errors when looking at a candidate’s potential. This is probably because employers value transferable soft skills and volunteering gives you plenty of those, particularly problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and people skills. Candidates with real-world experience also tend to be more insightful and ready to be more hands-on in projects. Away from the corporate world many people look around their community and long to make a difference but don’t know how. Look for community volunteering projects and get involved. It gives you the chance to think about the kind of community and world you want to live in, and to be part of something bigger than yourself. If you’re still not sure where to start your volunteering journey think about where your passions lie. Maybe you love animals, are passionate about butterflies, or you want to share music, or life experience, or gardening skills. Look on the web, there will probably be some volunteer group where your passion or knowledge will be useful. If you are feeling adventurous, volunteering abroad allows you to travel with a purpose. Before deciding on a programme it’s advisable to ask: • How will it benefit the local community? • Does the organisation respect the local culture? • What is the reason behind your volunteering trip? • What problem will the end-product help solve? Volunteering abroad changes how you see the world as you meet people daily from different countries, backgrounds and life experiences. Many of us are lonely in our modern lives. Maybe we moved away from our families for work, or we’re divorced, or widowed, or the children have left home. Volunteering introduces you to people from all walks of life and provides a means of making real friends who can have a lasting impact on you. Volunteering can shake you out of old routines and help you figure out where you want to head next. You might come up with ideas on how to improve your own community, or even discover a new life calling. Sarah Davey

Organisers of the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series are calling on ladies to pick a Race for Life event to suit their personal pace and sign up as soon as possible. This year, the Race for Life event in Eastbourne, is being held at Hampden Park on Sunday 17th June, with a 5k and 10k event to choose from. Cancer Research is urging local women to choose the event for them and sign up right now. By signing up to Race for Life, women in Eastbourne will make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Hiking events, which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding crucial research. Cancer Research UK’s lifesaving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to help more men, women and children survive. Jenny Ainsworth, Cancer Research UK’s Brighton Event Manager, said: “This year promises to be bigger and better than ever, so we’re calling on women all over East Sussex to choose the Race for Life event for them and enter today. “All Race for Life events are non-competitive. A DAY OF MEDITATION AND CREATIVITY

With Robin Shell

Tuesday 3rd July, 10am - 5pm, Florence House, Southdown Road. ÂŁ50. This day is about healing. We will work with two interconnecting themes: the healing power of crystals and healing from Nature. We will begin with a deep relaxation and meditation. This will lead us to an exploration of the Chakra system, how it supports us and what happens when the chakras are weakened. I will then introduce some of the crystals that I use regularly and participants will have the chance to play with, and get to know, a wide range of crystals; exploring their uses for healing and protection.

of crystals to take home and use for their own ongoing wellbeing. We will also look at how best to cleanse and care for crystals. Finally for the morning session, there will be a workshop to prepare and decorate a special container for storing your crystals. After lunch we will explore the healing power of Nature. Firstly we will do a relaxation and meditation and then we will go out into the beautiful garden of Florence House where we will spend time connecting to the energy and spirits of this lovely place to ask for healing and guidance. On our return you will each be invited to respond to your experience in your own way through writing in your journal, painting, drawing, collage or clay. The day will end with a coming together ritual to celebrate our connection with sound and chanting.

We will then look at our own strengths and weaknesses For more information or to book a place (places and consider which crystals we need to support us and are limited so please book early), please contact enhance our own individual healing. A view from the Potting Shed Totally Tropical

The ‘greenhouse effect’ is an environmental hot topic. And it’s true that despite the grim winter of 2017-18 we’ve generally been experiencing milder conditions in recent years. I’ve certainly started to experiment with more exotic plants. It’s a little risky; one hard winter can wipe out a tender specimen. But between now and September there’s every chance that many tropical plants will survive if planted out in our gardens. They need a sunny sheltered spot. Try Cannas – they have luxuriant broad spear-shaped leaves, which can be deep green, purple or even striped with orange or yellow. They produce vibrant flowers which look like gladioli but better! Or how about planting scarlet dahlias like ‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, which also sports attractive bronze foliage. A big clump of African marigolds provides a blaze of fiery colour. Or try tender perennial salvias in colours which range from magenta through to scarlet, and deep purples and blues. They won’t survive the first

The Honey Bush (Melianthus major) is a terrific halfhardy foliage specimen with its 50cm long grey-green deeply serrated leaves, which look as though they’ve been cut with pinking shears. Some of these plants will survive a British Winter with protection but it’s probably best to treat your ‘tropical’ border as a temporary display. Experiment and have fun creating your very own suburban rainforest. Happy Gardening! Rachael Leverton

Honeysuckles are one of those wonderful British garden plants that many admire for their beauty and the lovely perfume of the flowers at this time of year. Its botanical name is Lonicera, there are climbing varieties as well shrubby types which make for good hedging. They like full sun or partial shade and are easy to grow. There are around 180 species of honeysuckle with about 100 of these found in China, others are in India, North America and parts of Europe. The name honeysuckle is derived from the edible sweet nectar in its tubular flowers and the name Lonicera comes from a Renaissance botanist Adam Lonicer. Moths appreciate their nectar, feeding on them during the night. Along with roses, with their range of perfumes the honeysuckle must come up as a close second for its fragrance. Look out for them during June!

Verbena bonariensis produces tall wands of dainty lilac flowers. They self-seed freely, which is great if you consider that a bonus, but maybe avoid this one if selfseeding bothers you.You could even try a banana plant. The variety Musa Banjo is wonderfully architectural, and, though it does not produce fruit, it will create impact. Plant in a large pot and let its fan-like leaves create fabulous shadows on the patio. It hails from Japan originally and loves sunshine, but it is hardy to -6°C so perfect for the suburban UK climate. Do note that in winter the leaves naturally die back and turn brown, then grow back quickly in the spring.

3 Cut back some of the strongly growing

foliage and stems of late flowering herbaceous perennials by a third to a half, this will will produce extra flowers to bloom a little later in the season. 3 Plant out leek seedlings. 3 Divide large clumps of primulas - fork round the whole clump so the roots aren’t damaged, divide into individual plants, deadhead, trim the roots and replant in other parts of the garden, water in well.

Follers Manor opens garden for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice On Sunday 1st July, Anne and Geoff Shaw, owners of Follers Manor in Alfriston, are opening their spectacular garden in order to raise money for Chestnut Tree House, a local charity providing care for children with life-shortening illnesses across Sussex. The award-winning Follers Manor garden boasts spectacular scenery, giving unspoilt views of its breathtaking surroundings. Most recently featured on Alan Titchmarsh’s ‘Britain’s Best Back Gardens,’ the garden has appeared on several other programmes and won multiple awards for its stunning landscape within the South Downs National Park. This year the meadow is being redeveloped and visitors can see this work in progress. This will be the third time that the couple has opened their garden for Chestnut Tree House, with last year’s event raising over £2,000. ‘Everyone told us how much they enjoyed their time in the garden,’ says Anne Shaw. ‘The whole day had such a lovely, relaxed and friendly

atmosphere, and we were blessed with the weather, so I hope the same will be true this year.’ Anne recently visited Chestnut Tree House to see first-hand the care children with life-shortening conditions receive there. She commented: ‘The hospice is such a lovely, joyous place; I can imagine children have a really lovely time there. The equipment, the garden, the woodland walk are all wonderful and the staff do such an amazing job, it really is a happy place.’ Over the past two years Follers Manor open gardens has raised over £5,000 for the charity, and Anne and Geoff hope this year will just as successful. ‘I was shocked to learn that the charity receives less than 7% of it’s funding from central government,’ says Anne. ‘We are honoured to be in a position where we can raise funds for this vital local charity in their 15th Birthday year, and hope that plenty of people join us on Sunday 1st July to help local children and their families experience the happiness of Chestnut Tree House.’ Follers Manor is located on Whiteway in Alfriston. The gardens will be open on Sunday 1st July from 10am until 4pm with homemade refreshments available, along with a tombola and a variety of stalls. Entry is £6 per adult and children can visit for free. Dogs will not be allowed into the garden and organisers have asked that dogs aren’t left in cars. For further information about Chestnut Tree House and the care that they provide in East Sussex visit www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk and to find out more about Follers Manor you can visit www.follersmanor. co.uk where footage of the garden from its three TV appearances can be viewed. towner art gallery

The Towner’s much anticipated summer exhibition, Edward Stott: A Master of Colour and Atmosphere, is now on from 26th May to 16th September. Edward Stott (18551918) has been described as ‘the poet-painter of the twilight’. The Towner is marking the centenary of his death with a long overdue exhibition, which brings together a large body of Stott’s paintings for the first time in over 40 years, including a number of works from Towner’s Collection, as well as works on loan from national

The latest Arts Council Collection National Partner Exhibition opens with At Altitude, as well as the film, Omer Fast: 5000 Feet is the Best, both on from Saturday 2nd June to Sunday 30th September. At Altitude brings together a selection of artworks that explore how our experience of landscape, space and territory has been transformed by the introduction of new aerial views of the world. Ranging from an 18th-century account of hot air balloon flight to the all-enveloping images of Google Earth, the exhibition considers how these changing methods of observation have informed and inspired artists. In the adjacent gallery, Omer Fast’s 5000 Feet is the Best (2011) is a film about drone warfare and the pilots who operate these machines. The work is based on a series of interviews the artist conducted with a former drone operator now working as a Las Vegas casino security guard. 5000 Feet is the Best takes its name from the optimum operational flight altitude of a US Air Force Predator drone – at a distance of 5000 feet, drones can identify virtually anything. The film was acquired in 2016 for Towner’s Collection through Art Fund’s Moving Image Fund. On Saturday 2nd June At Altitude artist Mishka Henner will discuss how his work, which is composed of hundreds of high resolution satellite images, explores the role of photography in a digital age.

institutions including Royal Academy of Arts, Manchester Art Gallery, Touchstones in Rochdale, and National Trust.

Next month sees the launch of Towner Film. The first major season of film in the state-of-the-art auditorium takes inspiration from the centenary of the 1918 suffrage act in presenting a season dedicated entirely to women in film. Each week the Towner will bring you a feature film directed by a female filmmaker. There’ll also be foreign language and documentary films, as well as monthly Family-Friendly and Queer film screenings.
