With an average median household income of $70,741. East Cobb residents have some of the highest income levels in the metro Atlanta area, in the state of Georgia, and in the United States. Drive around East Cobb and one cannot help but notice the expensive cars, subdivision after subdivision of beautifully landscaped homes, and other symbols of wealth. For many East Cobbers they are fulfilling the American Dream. For so many more East Cobb residents, the “American Dream” includes showing more concern for things other than money by building a strong, healthy community. This edition of the EAST COBBER as well as our past publications, features those East Cobbers that are giving back to their community and helping those in need--from our front cover person, Roselle Wilkinson, East Cobb’s Citizen of the Year, to the master gardeners (see page 10) as well as the PTA leaders promoting parenting classes (see page 8). The Club Calendar and Support Groups pages burst with groups that come together on a regular basis to help those in need whether it be a MOMs Club or a service club. It is gratifying to hear that many of you have responded to EAST COBBER stories by donating money or giving of your time or passing along a piece of information to help those in need. That’s what this paper is all about! Consider the EAST COBBER an idea book and/or catalog on how East Cobbers are living the “American Dream.”
On this month’s front cover is Roselle Wilkinson, who was named 2009 East Cobb Citizen of the Year. The Cobb Chamber of Commerce presented Roselle Wilkinson with the 2009 East Cobb Citizen of the Year award at the East Cobb Area Council breakfast meeting last fall. Wilkinson has been an active member in the East Cobb community for over 17 years as a volunteer and business owner. She has been active in volunteering for civic and community organizations including Civitan International, East Cobb Civitan, Camp Big Heart Civitan, Atria and Sunrise Assisted Living Centers and Adopt-A-Highway Program. Roselle has been the chairperson of the East Cobb Civitan’s silent auction and wine tasting fundraiser. Over the past seven years, the East Cobb Civitan Club has collaborated with the Friends of the East Cobb Park using the annual silent Auction and Wine Tasting for raising funds for the park. Since forming this partnership, the East Cobb Civitan Club has donated over $85,000 to the East Cobb Park. “I have met wonderful people through the East Cobb Civitan Club . . .it is a dynamic, caring group of volunteers that work hard to put their actions & money where their heart is,” says Roselle.
Wilkinson is the president of Corporate

Benjamin Ringenberg, age 10, heard through his mother’s friend, CPL Eric Sieber, stationed in Afghanistan, that the children in the soldier’s village had no school supplies. The soldier shared that the children begged the soldiers for any sort of paper to write on, even gum wrappers, to use for school. Ben decided it would be easy to ask friends and family for school supplies that could be shipped. Benjamin collected about 350 pencils, 576 crayons, 108 colored pencils and 3,744 sheets of paper. The children were also sent construction paper, markers, erasers, and even some stickers! After the supplies were delivered to CPL Eric Sieber in Afghanistan, Ben said, “It really is easy to help, anyone can do it and it feels amazing!” Benjamin is a fourth-grader at The Wood Acres School.

PTA Sponsors Parenting Programs By Stephanie Holden, Chair, Parent/Family Involvement Committee, East Cobb County Council PTA It takes a village to raise a child. It’s an old African proverb that has become a popular saying, but what does it really mean? Everyone in our community has a role in helping our youth: parents, grandparents, family members, teachers and schools, coaches, the faith community, friends and neighbors. We live in a time when people are more connected than ever through the 24 hour news cycle, cell phones, social networking sites, and Twitter. And yet, many parents feel isolated and find that parenting is difficult, if not impossible, in our culture. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when we see so many bad examples in the media. Too many times, parents give in and let their children do things they don’t feel comfortable with because “everyone else is doing it. There is also a parent peer pressure of wanting our kids to be accepted and popular. How many times have you thought, “I’m not sure this is the right thing, but I don’t want my child to be left out. If you talk with parents one-onone they probably feel the same way. There are programs that can break the isolation and help parents. One program called Parent to Parent from The Passage Group is being offered by the East Cobb County Council (ECCC) PTA to all East Cobb schools. Parent to Parent is a prevention program that creates a network of parents to help raise healthy, responsible and independent kids despite our increasingly toxic culture. Created by Bill Oliver, a former Walton parent after his daughter got involved in drugs, it has reached over 3 million parents in 18 years.
• putting yourself in the way of our powerful culture • signs and symptoms of a healthy child and knowing the difference • using trust as a tool to develop good character • ways to raise an unhealthy child • the importance of a positive belief system • managing the internet in your home • common traps parents fall into with children • how to prevent kids from using drugs and alcohol. It’s time to get back to basics, talk, and get to know each other so we can help our children grow into responsible adults. We aren’t naïve to think we can bring back the good old days, but think about what you want for your children: respect for themselves and others, being accountable, responsible, and independent, among other things. Certain values never go out of fashion. Our community will benefit too. Remember the village? Our children will inherit it. Ask your school if they are offering Parent to Parent or contact Stephanie Holden at involvement@ecccpta.org to find out how to bring the program to your school.
It works like this: a small group of parents (20 or less) watch a DVD presentation and hold discussions with a trained facilitator for 4 weekly sessions. Some of the topics discussed are:
Stephanie Holden is the chair of the Parent/Family Involvement Committee at the East Cobb County Council PTA. She is also the Parent/Family Involvement Chair at Dodgen Middle School. An East Cobb resident for the past 10 years, Stephanie lives in the Chestnut Springs subdivision with her husband, Toby, and two children.

Master Gardener Classes are conducted annually in every state in the country. Cobb County classes are conducted each year on Tuesdays in January, February and March from 9am to 3pm and are taught by Professors and Extension Agents of the University of Georgia. Classes are college-level with a midterm, final and lots of reading and study. Because the program in Cobb County is so desirable and enrollment is limited, we send out applications each year in September and hold interviews in October. Interviews and selections for the program are conducted by a peer group of veteran Master Gardeners. Selections are based on gardening expertise, willingness to learn and your desire to give back volunteer hours within your community. Master Gardeners are volunteers with a teaching and service mission.
silvafm@silvapiano.com
In addition to classroom attendance, upon completion of the training program, Master Gardeners are required to give back 50 hours of volunteer service in their community by working at three or more of our Master Gardener projects and by answering questions at the Extension Office Horticulture Hotline. The Master Gardener projects and Hotline activities are scheduled Monday thru Friday, 8am – 5pm. While several of Cobb’s Master Gardeners have full-time jobs with some flexibility, most of our presentations and volunteer work generally occur during Monday through Friday. Carolyn notes, “The Master Gardener (MG) program in Georgia just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Cobb County has two of only three 30-year MGs in the state. These folks have worked in support of the program continuously for 30 years. We have several 20-year folks and many who have volunteered for 10. This is unusual in volunteering where attrition usually happens at 3 years.”

Master Gardeners are residents of the local community who take an active interest in gardening and in sharing their knowledge with others. “Cobb Master Gardeners are residents of our community with an interest in learning more about research-based horticultural practices and sharing that knowledge with others in our community. Cobb County has the most active Master Gardener Program in the state ss Carolyn Gentry with just over 250 Master Gardeners working at 14 ongoing projects and many activities,” explains Carolyn Gentry, Coordinator of Cobb County’s Master Gardener program.
Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County have also scheduled their annual Garden Tour for May 15. Master gardeners open their gardens to the public and a plant sale and plant clinic is also planned. For more information or to request an application to become a Master Gardener, call the Cobb County Extension Office at 770-528-4070.

Tax Tips For Homeowners It is everywhere in the news today - the recession continues, the unemployment rate is high, and many real property values may have declined over the past year. Local governments collect taxes from property owners based on the value of their property. A quick review of your property tax bill will indicate the amounts you pay to your County, State, City, and School Board for the services they provide. The County Board of Assessors determines the fair market value of all real and personal property in the county. The board then applies the statutory 40% to that appraisal to establish the ‘Assessed Value’. It is this Assessed Value less any qualified exemptions which is then calculated against the appropriate millage rates to determine the tax amount. With the current housing market, it is more important than ever to review the value of your home or other real property. If you believe your value is too high, now is the time to act. Real estate property owners in Georgia may request an adjustment of the 2009 fair market value of their property from January 1 to April 1, 2010. The property owner must file a Taxpayer’s Return of Real Property with their County Board of Assessors. In Cobb County, the form is available at the Board of Assessors website: www.cobbassessor.org. Useful information about your property value and those of comparable value in your community are also available at the Cobb County Board of Assessors website.
A European - Style Market Shopping Experience
If the Board of Assessors does not adjust the assessment, the property owner may then file an appeal. Most appeals are heard by the Boards of Equalization. However, this and other appeal options may be viewed on the Board of Assessors website.

Information regarding Cobb County property tax bills, including millage rates and exemptions can be found on the web site of the Cobb County Tax Commissioner at www.cobbtax.org. There are a variety of property tax exemptions available to qualifying homeowners which vary from city to city. Basic Homestead Exemption, School Tax (age 62) Exemption, State Age 65 and age 65 $4000 Exemption (Income Limit), and Disability Exemption (Income Limit) are just a few of the exemptions available. You must apply for all exemptions on or before April 1, 2010, to affect the 2010 tax year. If you have questions or need assistance please visit the Cobb County Tax Commissioner at www.cobbtax.org or call 770-5288600.

Urine deposited on carpet can penetrate the fibers and contaminate both the backing of the carpet and the flooring material below the carpet. As the urine dries, the liquid evaporates but the urine crystals become even more concentrated and pungent. Simple cleaning will not remove this odor. Chem-Dry’s revolutionary P.U.R.T.® is specially formulated to eliminate urine odors and has shown excellent results on even the most severe urine damage. AllStar Chem-Dry® professionals will perform a FREE PET URINE ANALYSIS (with carpet cleaning service) using a black light (and their noses!) to identify the severity of the problem and recommend a solution that can permanently remove the odor.
I am considering remodeling my kitchen or bath, but the thought of it just seems so overwhelming. What do you recommend if I am just getting started in the process? I always recommend you keep it simple in the beginning. Make a list of your likes and dislikes about the existing kitchen or bath. Use remodeling magazines available at any drugstore for ideas about colors, styles and features you want incorporated. Finally, quiz contractors about their design process before you hire them. Many companies have great carpenters, but leave you holding the bag on ideas to make a room look great.

Why should I use a professional maid service company versus using an independent cleaner?
Jim Sessoms Owner, Clean Complete
Using a professional maid service has the following advantages: 1) Removes your legal responsibility to file year-end IRS taxes and forms for household employees; 2) Removes personal liability associated with accidents that may occur in your home; 3) We perform thirdparty background checks, drug testing, and professionally train our cleaners; 4) Companies carry General Liability insurance, Workers Compensation insurance, and a business license; and, 5) We offer professionalism, dependability, consistent quality, efficiency, and no “personal baggage”.

ECCA also participates in Keep Cobb Beautiful activities such as the Adopt-A-Mile program, tree plantings, electronic recycling, document shredding and “Bring-One-for-Chipper”. Home & Garden Guide What will give me the most impact when looking at the front of our home curb appeal? So many times people are looking towards plant specific ideas when they really need to step back and look at the setting for the home. Many times it’s removing plants that “cover” or crowd the house, looking at how the walkway leads up too and presents the house. The key is how the hardscape and plantings lead the eye to the front of the house.
I have always heard that maintenance agreements are a waste of money so why should I purchase one for my heating and air conditioning system?
Debbie Abernathy, V.P. E. Smith Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.
For many items a maintenance agreement could very well be a waste of dollars. However, your HVAC system is a major financial investment and in most cases some component of your system is at work 24/7. When you think about it – your home climate system has more working hours than your automobile which you maintain on a regular basis. Also, a properly maintained system is more efficient, has fewer breakdowns, will keep you more comfortable and will last longer. In fact, according to a study at Louisiana State University, a properly maintained system can save an average of $50.00 per month over a poorly maintained system.

Why do I need an Inventory for my home or office? Just buying insurance to cover your home and contents isn’t enough. You must provide documented proof of ownership to receive a settlement covering the full extent of your loss. Before your insurance company can even begin processing your claim, it will need a full inventory describing in detail exactly what has been lost or damaged. Be prepared before disaster strikes.

With summer fast approaching and humidity and temperatures rising, what can I do to minimize mildew growth on my exterior paint? Preventative maintenance and a properly applied high-quality paint are paramount to minimizing mildew growth. Preventative maintenance such as a yearly power washing removes mildew growth before it becomes a problem. Also, you should avoid the use of “economy paints” that have insufficient mildewcide to combat mildew growth.

Why is surge suppression so important?
James Crofutt Operations Manager Lightning Bug Electric
Our inclement weather in Georgia produces a lot of powerful storms that cause lightning and other forces of nature. During thunderstorms, lightning can strike miles away and still cause massive surges through your electrical system. Most of today’s electronics are very sensitive to these surges and can fail rather easily. In some cases, homeowners insurance will not cover damages to your electronics and appliances due to surges. We recommend to every homeowner to have a whole house surge protection installed by a licensed electrician. Their warranties are great and the peace of mind is worth every penny spent.

Residents Need to Register for CodeRED Emergency Notification System
PAPER AFFAIR
FINE STATIONERY & GIFTS
Cobb County is launching a reverse-911 system called CodeRED. The system allows officials to quickly communicate time-sensitive messages to targeted areas or the entire county. This will be especially helpful in delivering important information during an emergency. The system is only as effective as the telephone-number database supporting it, so residents are strongly encouraged to add their home and mobile phone numbers. All businesses should register, as well as residents who have unlisted numbers, have changed their phone numbers or addresses within the past year, or use cell phones or VoIP phones as their primary numbers. Register by visiting www.cobbcounty.org/911 and clm is important to register cell phone numbers as well. The information provided will only be used for emergency notification purposes.

Home & Garden Guide
Don’t Burn Up Your Clean Air Why is an outdoor burning ban needed in Cobb? Metro Atlanta, including Cobb County, is one of the areas of Georgia designated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “non-attainment” areas for ozone and particle pollution. Limiting open burning during the hot and sunny months of Smog Season will help decrease these pollutants and help improve air quality and health in Cobb County. Why is burning outside harmful? Outdoor burning contributes to smog, which can cause health and breathing problems for children, the elderly and the physically active. The heat and sunlight of summer reacts with the smoke and other emissions to create ground level ozone – a key component of smog. In turn, ground level ozone can cause inflammation and permanent damage to the lungs, even at very low levels. The problem is such that metro Atlanta residents are regularly advised of air quality through smog alerts issued by the Environmental Protection Division and Clean Air Campaign. These alerts, among other uses, warn of times that residents should avoid outdoor activity. When is “Smog Season”? Open burning is banned during “Smog Season,” which is May through September. These months are the hottest, sunniest times of the year, when the weather can intensify the creation of smog. What are the rules of the outdoor burning ban? Don’t burn anything outside from May 1 through September 30, unless you fall under one of the following exemptions: • Recreational Fires: Cannot be within 25 feet of structure or combustible materials. Must be constantly attended. Must be completely extinguished. • Bonfires (permit required): Must be completely out by 10:30pm. • Cooking fires (e.g., barbecue grill or pit) Food must be for immediate human consumption. • Fires in an outdoor fireplace or chimenea. For more detailed information on open burning, contact Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services at 770-528-8000. Call 770-528-8310 or 8312 to request a bonfire permit.

It will be love at first bite when you visit the Brazilian Bakery Café in Marietta. Tucked at the end of a small strip shopping center on Power’s Ferry Road, this bright and cheerful eatery is the only Brazilian bakery in the metro area and features an extensive selection of sweet and savory baked goods, freshly prepared onsite. The huge display cases are brimming with flaky and delicious pastries, crispy rolls and freshly baked breads, fantastic desserts, and cookies of every shape, size and flavor. Brazilian Bakery Café is a favorite lunch spot serving authentic Brazilian items such as Frango, a traditional shredded chicken pie; Pasteis, crispy fried pastries stuffed with your favorite filling of cheese or meat; Coxinha, deep-fried pastries stuffed with chicken and cheese; and Risole, fried dough stuffed with corn and cheese or beef. Made-to order salads and sandwiches are also offered, served on crispy Brazilian rolls full of texture and flavor. Fresh squeezed juices and smoothies are also a must-try.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Hold First Annual Sporting Clay and Quail Hunt
ss Ron Davis, Mark Tidwell, Nathan Tidwell, Cameron Tidwell & Ron Davis Jr. Supporters and staff of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), roughly 50 people total, turned out for the first annual Father/Son/Daughter Sporting Clay and Quail Hunt in Dawsonville, GA. Held January 16 and 17, the weekend was a unique way to raise money for FCA as well as to thank some FCA supporters for their financial and ministry support! Several thousand dollars were collected for the ministry and a great time was had by all. The recent surge of outdoors related events has led the Atlanta Area FCA to establish the first ever full-time staff member devoted to creating and implementing outdoors ministry now known as FCA Outdoors. With a continued commitment to support the FCA Staff, the Outdoors Ministry plans include events that bring families together. From Teach a Kid to Fish, now in its second year of development with

MUST Ministries Needs Donations for New Health Clinic by March 31 MUST Ministries is in the home stretch for a capital campaign to raise money to open a new, state- of- the- art health clinic at its new location at 1407 Cobb Parkway in Marietta. However, the faith based organization risks losing a $500,000 grant if it doesn’t raise matching funds by March 31. MUST was awarded the grant in July from the Kresge Foundation, a Michigan-based foundation dedicated to strengthening non-profits. However, MUST is required to raise the first $6.3 million of its goal of $6.8 Million. If that is accomplished, the foundation will provide the remaining $500,000. To date, MUST has received just a little more than $5.4 million in gifts and pledges. To raise the remaining $868,000 by the deadline MUST has started a “Help Us Cash The Check” campaign. Through the health clinic, MUST provides free health care for those who can least afford it. About 3,000 patients visit it annually. For the past 15 years, the clinic has operated out of a small, single wide trailer. “It’s cold and drafty. There is no place to wait in inclement weather,” MUST executive director John Moeller said of the clinic’s current trailer. “There is not enough space to provide patient con-

fidentiality. There is not enough space to provide care for more than one patient at a time”. The organization hopes to open the new facility in April. Construction has already begun. When completed, it will have a classroom, an office for a social worker and six treatment rooms surrounding a nurses station, increasing MUST‘s patient treatment capacity. Moeller said that the new clinic will be a model of indigent care once it’s completed, with the Kennesaw State University School of Nursing providing daily management and a WellStar Health System physician serving as medical director. “The new clinic will provide better space to treat patients,” he said. It will enable more medical staff to volunteer and give back to the community. It will allow for patient education and for social work to integrate into patient care.” Going online to www.mustministries.org and clicking “Building Campaign” is the easiest way to make a gift, or contact Seth Tuttle, director of major gifts, at 678-2184513 or stuttle@mustministries.org.

Drugstore Reading Glasses Will drugstore reading glasses hurt my eyes? My patients often ask me this. They work well for some people but not all. An eye-exam is the only way to answer that question. Let me explain:
Judith Reichenbach, Ed. S. Licensed Professional Counselor 770-597-9882 Loving Christian counseling families/individuals. Conflict, grief, blended families, adolescent behavior, L. D., depression, body image, P.T.S.D, loneliness, marriage revitalization, illness, empty-nest, fear, guilt, shame, anger, career coaching, high school/college planning, or just need someone to talk to. Available evenings/weekends. In-home services available East Cobb area only.
Pre-made reading glasses have some limitations. First of all they have the same lens power for the right and left eyes. This works for some, but many people have significant differences right vs. left and need a more custom made pair of glasses. Another limitation is that the drugstore glasses have no way to correct astigmatism- which is a common focusing error in many people. A third limitation is that the pre-made glasses have their optical centers set at an average for the population, not for the individual. In the stronger lens powers, this discrepancy can cause fatigue and discomfort. The bottom line is that an eye exam is the only way to know for sure. Even if drugstore glasses will work fine for you, there is danger in not getting an annual eye exam from having a false sense of security. There are many health checks preformed during your annual eye exam including a glaucoma test. The risk of undetected glaucoma is real and if detected early can be successfully treated. Have your eyes checked annually to be sure they are healthy and find out if “drugstore readers” can work for you. 2745 Sandy Plains Road Marietta Ga 30066

PERSONAL TRAINING Childhood obesity or excess weight threatens the healthy future of one third of American children. We spend $150 billion every year to treat obesity-related conditions, and that number is growing. Obesity rates tripled in the past 30 years, a trend that means, for the first time in our history, American children may face a shorter expected lifespan than their parents. We need to get moving. Join First Lady Michelle Obama, community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses, moms and dads in a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity. Let’s Move has an ambitious but important goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation. Let’s Move will give parents the support they need, provide healthier food in schools, help our kids to be more physically active, and make healthy, affordable food available in every part of our country. For more information on the Let’s Move initiative, go to: www.letsmove.gov.

Asheville Offers Biltmore & Beyond By Cynthia M. Rozzo
Inn & Resort Grove Park
Asheville mou ntains
Biltmore House Inspired by the book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, by Patricia Schultz, I have created a list of places I want to see with my kids before they grow up. This list includes the Grove Park Inn & Resort and the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. It is my hope that traveling—even short road trips—to different destinations will expose my children (and my husband and me, too) to our country’s national landmarks and be enlightened by the people who created them. So, off we (husband, George, and children, Lee, 13, Nikos, 11, and Eleni, 9) went for a few days during the Thanksgiving break from our Atlanta suburb northward through the twisting highways that cut through forested hills and then mountains dominating the landscape on either side. Driving to Asheville’s historic Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa, located at the top of a winding, narrow road, felt like an awesome discovery. When our SUV finally pulled onto the resort’s driveway we were greeted by a pleasant man wearing a tall top hat. The Grove Park’s unique look was inspired by the craggy rustic style of the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park, which the hotel’s founder and builder, Edwin W. Grove, had visited. Huge granite boulders—some of them weighing as much as 10,000 pounds were taken from the nearby Sunset Mountain and fitted into place over a steel and concrete frame by Italian stonemasons and hundreds of local workers. On July 13, 1913, after a year of construction, the Grove Park Inn opened its doors. Upon entering the hotel, or “Great Hall”, as it is more aptly called, we were stepping into another place and time. At 120 feet long and 80 feet wide, this is a lot of lobby. Anchoring the hall at either end are two massive fireplaces—each large enough to burn 12-foot long logs and each containing an elevator. That’s right, an elevator. These hand-operated wonders run alongside the chimney shafts within the rock work of the great fireplaces and transport guests and luggage to the upper floors. Authentic Arts and Crafts furniture and lighting fixtures decorate the lobby and the main inn’s guest rooms. Another unique feature of the Great Hall is the inspirational quotes engraved on its stone walls. 46 March 2010
As I checked in, my children ran out to the terrace to take in the panoramic view -- the Asheville skyline to the left and layers upon layers of mountains to the right. The friendly hotel staff was quick to explain that the Grove Park is divided into three sections: there’s the original historic inn located above the lobby area with its signature orange tiled roof. Then there’s the Vanderbilt Wing (named after the illustrious family who lived in nearby Biltmore Estate) and the Sammons Wing. Our valet took us up to the room via the original elevator located in the chimney shaft. We stayed in connecting rooms in the older part of the hotel. Rooms in the main wing where we stayed feature genuine Arts and Crafts furniture and lighting fixtures dating from 1900-1940 but they also have modern conveniences like cable TV, coffeemakers, microwaves, mini-refrigerators and hair dryers. Rooms in the two modern wings feature a more contemporary décor plus all the aforementioned amenities. No matter which you choose (and for history buffs the rooms in the main wing are a must), you’ll find a night at the Grove Park Inn a perfect mix of modern comfort and timeless style. After a comfortable night’s sleep, my family enjoyed the delicious, hearty breakfast buffet at the Blue Ridge Grill, with spectacular views of Asheville and the mountains in the distance. The Grill is one of several restaurants and casual eateries at the Grove Park Inn ranging from the upscale Chops steakhouse to the new Spa Café and Juice Bar located in the inn’s spectacular $40 million spa that opened in 2001. From hot stone massages and red wine and honey facials, the spa is the inn’s newest attraction. Other enticements include the Grove’s own golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and a sports and fitness center. No visit to Asheville is complete without a stop to the Biltmore Estate, the one-time home of the illustrious Vanderbilt family. George Washington Vanderbilt, one of several heirs to the railroad fortune his grandfather Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt had amassed, began constructing the Biltmore House in 1889. Single at the time, he

originally intended it to be a small hunting lodge set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains and green rolling hills of Asheville, a 19th-century health resort town. But as custom-built houses often do, it grew. Six years and hundreds of craftspeople later, the Biltmore House became what it is today -- an imposing presence in grayish-beige Indiana limestone with spires, chimneys and gargoyles that is America’s largest private residence and draws nearly a million visitors a year. In fact, the house - a French chateau style - is enormous, grand and detailed. It features 4 acres of floor space, 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. My kids were especially fascinated with the basement alone which houses a swimming pool, gymnasium and changing rooms, bowling alley, servants’ quarters, kitchens, and more. There’s nothing else in America like it. Nothing. Plan to spend at least a few hours there, and make sure to drive slow enough to enjoy the gorgeous grounds. The grounds of the 125,000-acre estate were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the creator of New York’s Central Park and the father of American landscape architecture. He not only developed acres of gardens and parkland, but in his efforts to protect the environment and reclaim overfarmed land, Olmsted established America’s first managed forest. Of course, take a house tour, a stroll through the gardens, and then head to the winery to sample a few of the fine estate wines. Our family enjoyed a late lunch at the Bistro--a restaurant attached to the winery. Also included in the estate admission is access to River Bend farm located on the Biltmore estate. The farm recreates what it was like to live and work on the estate in the 1890’s. My kids enjoyed the craft demonstrations, farmyard animals, and antique farm equipment.

Our final day was spent walking around downtown Asheville. Asheville’s downtown is devoted to art and food, with quirky galleries, renovated art deco buildings and curbside bistros lining every street. The Appalachian Craft Center peddles traditional mountain arts while the former Woolworth’s building is now home to a soda fountain and arts flea market. The Blue Ridge Mountain City of Asheville not only offered the historical landmarks of the Grove Park Inn and the Biltmore, but its varied sights, sounds, textures, and passions made this trip enjoyable and educational.

Too busy or overwhelmed to cut grocery coupons or pore over weekly grocery flyers for advertised sale prices? The Grocery Czar knows it is easy to find advertised sale prices on featured products, but what about all the other items you need to purchase? The Grocery Czar is your answer to saving time and money on your weekly grocery bill. The Grocery Czar is a new and innovative concept to saving time and money at the grocery store. A team of Grocery Czar experts shops every aisle of four major grocery chains in the metro Atlanta area twice weekly to independently identify the lowest prices on dozens of items throughout the stores. At least sixty popular grocery items are compared at Kroger, Publix, Walmart and Aldi, and then compiled in an easy to read online report that highlights the lowest price for each item. Staple items such as eggs, butter and milk are tracked regularly, but the majority of items change twice weekly to offer a variety of foods and savings. For a nominal fee, online subscribers to the service can visit the Grocery Czar website at www.groceryczar.com each Sunday and Thursday for updated pricing and savings. Shoppers report substantial savings of between thirty and eighty percent on their grocery bills without using coupons, and even more if they do choose to use coupons in conjunction with the service. The Grocery Czar is the brainchild of Marietta resident David McKeone, who has always had a passion for saving his family money and a knack for finding the best grocery prices in the area. He is thrilled when a subscriber tells him how much money his semi-weekly services saves them and posts customer testimonials on the website. For a limited time, the Grocery Czar is offering a trial membership subscription for only one cent. You have nothing to lose, and time and money to save, with a monthly or annual subscription to the Grocery Czar! Visit www.groceryczar.com for details, and follow the Atlanta Grocery Czar on Facebook.

Glass Ceiling Nominations Wanted
The Coach’s Corner Creating Your Business Plan This could be the most important document that you could ever produce for your company. It could be anywhere from a one page document up to a fifty page document. There are no two business plans the same. First question: What is your business plan for? Is it to raise money from a bank or venture capital? Each one requires different types of information. Is it the blueprint to build and measure the progress of the business? Is it the WHAT, WHY, HOW and WHEN of your strategic plan? One thing is for sure: It is the big picture of your vision for your business. If it is done correctly, it will keep you passionate and motivated throughout the year.

Christine Keeley’s chest pain made everything difficult, from walking up a flight of stairs to going to the grocery store. “My body was crying out in stress; I just didn’t realize it.” Medication didn’t help. Even resigning from her stressful job didn’t help. So she went to see Dr. Caras, who determined that angioplasty was her best option.

I can do anything – even keep up with my grandkids.”
