publisher’s note

On the Cover “I would never had imagined myself worthy of such an honor!” was Elizabeth Jenkin’s reaction when she discovered she had become EAST COBBER’s Mother of the Year.

She was touched

that her longtime friend, Emily Yellingwood, nominated her for the EAST COBBER’s annual contest. “I feel blessed to carry this honor on behalf of all moms—

Dear Fellow East Cobbers: To help celebrate Mother’s Day, this May edition of the EAST COBBER marks the 16th anniversary of our “Mother of the Year” Contest. In the past we’ve featured working moms, single moms, stay-at-home moms, and this year, we spotlight a mom in a unique situation on the front cover. As you can read on pages 6, Elizabeth Jenkins is handling all the duties of running her family by herself because her husband is serving in Iraq.

especially single moms,” says

It is exciting to witness the momentum this special promotion has created with each passing year. I am grateful to the many local businesses that donated gifts to our “Mother of the Year” winner. (page 7). Although only one essay is featured, know that there are more moms making East Cobb a better place to live today and in the future by accomplishing the responsibilities of motherhood.

Army National Guard reservist,

I am proud to be a part of this privileged group called “moms.” As a mom, I have realized how not just having a child but being responsible for the physical, emotional and moral development of a child connects me to a larger whole. I am connected not just to other mothers because of the shared experience of childbirth, or other parents because of our common trials and tribulations of child-rearing but I also feel a connection to all humans seeking a better world. Being a mother to my son, Lee, 13; Nikos, 11; and, Eleni, 9, reaffirms what I set out to do over 17 years ago when I created EAST COBBER. The EAST COBBER monthly recognizes those East Cobb residents who are reaching out by committing their talents and abilities to improve our world from the local Master Gardeners (page 8) to the public servants recognized by the East Cobb Rotary Club (page 45) to the members of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church who have created an annual festival that shares their food and culture with the community (pages 34 & 35). We are lucky to have these people in East Cobb and as publisher of the EAST COBBER, I am proud to promote their good works.

December 8, 2010.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Elizabeth. She is referring to her temporary “single mom” status because her husband, Joel, an volunteered to serve in Iraq as a full-time active warrant officer. His 400 day tour of duty ends “My situation allows me to empathize what single moms have to go through as far as managing and caring for a family single-handedly,” shares Elizabeth. East Cobb residents for the past 10 years, Elizabeth and Joel are parents of Reid, 12, and Caroline, 15. She enjoys the convenient shopping and appreciates the sense of community in East Cobb. 8 May 2010

One of the most beautiful mothers in East Cobb is a close friend and it is an honor to nominate Elizabeth Jenkins ss Mother of the Year Elizabeth Jenkins is for Mother of the pictured above with her son, Reid Jenkins, Year. Although 12; daughter, Caroline Jenkins, 15; Bella her outer beauty (the dog), and her husband, Joel. is what you notice first, it is her inner beauty that makes me want to drop everything and write to the EAST COBBER as to why she should be East Cobb’s Mother of the Year! Last year Elizabeth’s husband, Joel, left for Iraq. Joel’s return to the military was not an easy decision for them to make. It would mean many sacrifices and demands on each member of the family which would not be easy. Joel will be gone for over 400 days. Running the family business, maintaining the home and parenting her two children, Caroline and Reed, without the day to day support of Joel, challenges Elizabeth daily. While sacrificing the day to day affection and support of her sweet husband, she is forced to take on responsibilities she normally would not have to. Many of us face challenging circumstances which either destroy us or make us stronger. Elizabeth’s strength of character has shined when faced with adversity and she continually sets an example for her children of what we aspire to as moms. She is strong and independent but not too proud to ask for help when she needs it. Elizabeth is not a whiner and complainer. She is real and does not hide her pain, but she is not prone to ongoing pity parties and constant whining. Elizabeth possesses a grateful heart and sees in each day something for which to thank God. Even in her tears, she laughs! Elizabeth continually perseveres even when the marathon of life seems to zap all her energy. Lastly, Elizabeth is a giver. She continues to reach out and bless her family and friends through her many talents even when no one expects it during this challenging time. By choosing Elizabeth Jenkins as Mother of the Year, the EAST COBBER would be honoring one of East Cobb’s greatest mothers.

Master Gardeners Sponsor Annual Garden Tour Take A Self-Guided Tour of Four Unique Gardens in East Cobb Here are the private gardens featured on this year’s Garden Tour: Lakeside Overlook Carmen Cudd • 1162 Ashley Lake Drive • Marietta 30062 Native azaleas, hydrangeas and ferns thrive in the shaded front garden of this lakeside home, under a canopy of mature oaks. Meandering paths outlined with clipped boxwoods lead you to the sunny back garden, where the pool and lakeside vistas are enhanced by the owner’s collection of specimen plants, creatively arranged in unusual containers. The Garden of Whimsy Tim Martin • 2862 Water Wheel Court • Marietta 30062 An arbor, covered with roses and moon vine, invites one into this private garden, bordered at the street by a clipped evergreen hedge. Once inside, the visitor is greeted by the 100-foot long mixed border, showcasing irises, lilies, flowering shrubs and perennials. At every turn, you will find whimsical art, mixed into planting beds, highlighted by the tin-roofed garden cottage and the full-sized bed, covered with a living quilt and guarded by a topiary teddy bear.

ss East Cobber Tim Martin in his garden

Visiting gardens at their prime in spring is always a joy. Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County hope you will join them on Saturday, May 15, 10am to 4pm, to walk “down the garden path” of four unique East Cobb gardens to benefit their community education programs. The gardens are owned and lovingly tended by a Cobb County Master Gardener. These gardens, all in East Cobb County, have been chosen to highlight, promote and demonstrate individual design styles and good gardening practices with everything from roses to perennials, vegetables to vineyards, fruit trees to herbs and annuals. Each is full of ideas to take home and try in your garden. These gardens will delight the senses and give inspiration and encouragement to gardeners and would-be gardeners alike. Master Gardeners will be on site providing interpretation and educational opportunities for tour guests. Plant lists and printed educational materials will also be available at each garden. A Master Gardener plant sale at the Holt Road Baptist Church will feature drought tolerant plants, herbs and vegetables. The plant sale is open to the public. The Garden Tour runs from 10am until 4pm and is open to the public. Admission is $10 per person purchased in advance. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the event at any of the gardens on the tour for $12. Children 12 and under are free. All entries to the gardens must have a ticket. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Cobb Extension Office, 678 South Cobb Dr., Suite 200, Marietta 30060, through May 14, 8am until 5pm. Tickets can also be purchased at each garden the day of the Garden Tour. Only cash or checks will be accepted. The gardens are not wheelchair or stroller accessible. Only service animals are allowed. Restroom facilities are available only at the plant sale location. No solicitation is allowed. Tour will be held rain or shine. 10 May 2010

Private Retreat Judy Renault • 3420 Salem Trace • Marietta 30062 An ornamental cherry, surrounded by peonies and heritage irises, leads the visitor to the gracious, columned front porch of this home. The shaded walk continues to the private retreat, where the owner escapes to a garden bordered by stacked stone walls, living walls of trees, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias. The herb garden shines in the bits of bright sun, while large pink dogwoods, hostas, and hellebores thrive around the lap pool. Woodland Garden Virginia Galvin • 3772 Baccurate Way • Marietta 30062 Every conceivable texture and shade of green marks the entrance to this hillside garden, where annuals add splashes of color to the borders, surrounding the mondo grass lawn. The stone path along the side of the residence doubles as a dry stream bed, leading to a spectacular rear garden, where the gazebo is nestled amongst camellias, azaleas, and hellebores. Plant Sale Holt Road Baptist Church • 675 Holt Road, Marietta 30068 Hundreds of plants, grown by Master Gardeners, will be available for sale. In addition, you are invited to bring your gardening questions, and/or your problem plants, for evaluation by a Master Gardener at our Plant Doctor Clinic. We will also share information on butterflies, composting, bee culture, and many other garden related ideas. Breakfast and lunch items will also be available for sale. The plant sale is open to the public. Timber Ridge Elementary Special Needs Kids made their first trip to East Cobb Park’s all accessible playground last month thanks to the East Cobb Civitans. The play equipment at their school wasn’t user-friendly for some of the students so the East Cobb Civitans stepped in with the funding for the bus trip so they could enjoy this new special needs playground. Resurgens Orthopaedics donated the playground equipment. The site work and fencing was provided by The Friends for the East Cobb Park. The all accessible playground was opened last summer.

Mosquito Squad Opens Up The Great Outdoors

ss Owners Kelly and Steve Sanders

Nothing breaks up an outside gathering like mosquitoes. Everyone is on the patio enjoying the warm spring evening when the first slap occurs. Mosquitoes quickly descend on the other guests, and within minutes the crowd moves indoors.

Are mosquitoes & ticks preventing you and your family from

ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS?

Mosquitoes are attracted to heat, light, perspiration, body odor, lactic acid, and carbon dioxide. These girls (only the females bite) can use their chemical sensors to detect carbon dioxide and lactic acid from 100 feet away. So if mosquitoes reside in your yard, they will more than likely attend your outside events. For those who like outdoor living, there is a new Marietta company that can rid outdoor areas of annoying pests that transmit disease and ruin your fun. Owners Kelly and Steven Sanders brought the franchise called Mosquito Squad to the area in January 2010. The brothers became familiar with the company, which is part of a larger business called Outdoor Living Brands, while living in Greenville, SC. A contributing factor to their decision was that Mosquito Squad is at the top of the list of the franchise systems that are surveyed and has been awarded the “World Class Franchise” designation according to the Franchise Research Institute. With family in the Atlanta vicinity, the Sanders brothers decided on Marietta as the best place to begin their new venture. Kelly Sanders says he confirmed the business decision while standing on a porch swatting mosquitoes one day. “I need this product,” he says. “Our customers will, too.” Covering Marietta and a 30-mile radius, Mosquito Squad now offers its customers mosquito protection. Its products also kill ticks, flies, fleas, gnats and some other nuisance bugs. In addition to residential homes, the company provides services to special outdoor events, such as weddings or birthday parties, as well as to restaurants or businesses with outdoor areas. Two types of products are available. The first is a professional fogging system that fights mosquitoes for 21 days. The barrier spray kills pests on contact. As incoming pests attempt to feed off greenery, the residue on the leaves kills newcomers. As an alternative to avoid synthetics, a second all-natural solution is also available. This organic garlicbased spray essentially confuses insects and causes them to leave an area. It does break down more quickly and must be applied every 14 days. Mosquito Squad can service an outdoor area in about 15 minutes, offering a safe return for children and pets within 30 minutes after the treatment. All services are 100 percent guaranteed.

If so, the new answer is Mosquito Squad. Mosquito Squad provides highly-effective and affordable 21-day traditional and 14-day all natural barrier sprays, for season-long protection or one-time special events.

The Georgia mosquito season begins in April and continues through October or November. So now is the time to call Mosquito Squad. Check out the web site at www.mosquitosquad.com or call 404/758-5150. State of the School System Speech Superintendent Fred Sanderson delivered the 2010 State of the School System address during the March 10 work session of the Cobb County Board of Education. The following is the first half of Mr. Sanderson’s speech. To access his full speech, readers are encouraged to go to http://www.cobbk12. org/centraloffice/communications/news/2010/20100310_ StateoftheSystem.aspx I want to thank the Board for the opportunity to speak today about the state of our school system. In last year’s report I noted that this is truly a transitional time for public education in Georgia and Cobb County, a statement more true today than ever. When we look back on the year that has passed, it is clear that our school district has faced, and will continue to face, a growing array of external challenges – challenges that are amplified by rapidly declining resources. Nevertheless, we are confronting these challenges with new ideas, relentless optimism, and a structured plan for success. When you look at the recent results of our efforts, I think you will see the important progress we are making toward achieving our goal of providing a World Class education for the students of Cobb County. I want to recap some of the events of 2009 that have brought us to this point. Then, I want to look at where we are heading in the framework of the District’s Strategic Plan. Let’s start with what some would consider the controversial, or headline-grabbing events in 2009. • First, we successfully completed the implementation of new report cards in third grade. These report cards are aligned with the state’s new standards-based curriculum, and they provide much more specific information for parents to identify deficiencies in their child’s performance. The same report cards had been implemented the two prior years, in kindergarten through 2nd grade, with absolutely no issue. Despite some initial distractions and misinformation, the 3rd grade report card implementation has gone very smoothly and parents seem to appreciate the more detailed information. • Last fall, the school board approved a balanced calendar for the next three school years. The District surveyed teachers, who overwhelmingly supported some version of a balanced calendar, and board members took that into consideration, as well as what they had heard in their own communities. There was some vocal opposition to this decision, and not all board members supported it. There is no question, though, that the issue was debated in full and every angle of the calendar issue was covered thoroughly. In the end, a new calendar was approved and we are already hard at work making sure its introduction next school year is a successful one. • Lastly, we cannot sugarcoat the reality of the financial burden we faced last spring and following the approval of the Fiscal Year 2010 budget. The economic crisis resulted in massive reductions in state education funding, compounding the austerity cuts that have been implemented in recent years. What began as a deficit of $58 million for our District 16 May 2010

quickly grew to nearly $80 million. Just recently, additional cuts in state funding reduced the 2010 budget another $16 million, so that the total deficit faced in 2010 has now reached the almost unimaginable figure of $95.1 million dollars. Let me say that again for effect: The total Fiscal Year 2010 budget deficit is $95.1 million. I think it is safe to say that our school district has not faced such a financial burden in anyone’s memory, and likely in its entire history. What followed were difficult decisions to bring our budget into balance. Some of those decisions included: • A two-percent pay reduction for all employees; • A reduction in teacher workdays; • Three furlough days for teachers, and four furlough days for non-teachers; • A half-year delay in salary step increases; • Class sizes increased; • The elimination of the Area Lead Teacher program; • The elimination of Technology support positions; • An 11-percent reduction in central office positions, and cuts to central office budgets; • A $10 million reduction in the District’s reserve fund. Additionally, we were forced to find ways to become more efficient in our operations, even as we knew those decisions would not be popular among the District’s stakeholders. An example is the restructuring of school bus stops at the start of this school year. By consolidating some bus stops, we’ve been able to cut Transportation costs and make our routes more efficient. To date, these adjustments have helped to lower Transportation costs, and in the numbers you can see on the screen our Transportation expenses so far this school year are $4.8 million under our mid-year budget. While we knew that changes to bus stops would be met with resistance from some parents, these types of operational changes are an unfortunate, but necessary, result of our fiscal reality. As grim as the financial picture was heading into this school year, I think we can be proud of the fact that we were able to balance our budget while preserving teacher jobs and benefits, having the lowest possible impact on classroom instruction, and without raising taxes. We were able to do this because of the willingness of our employees to comprehend the depth of the financial crisis, and to step up and share in meeting the burden. As we move into the next budget cycle, we will be calling on employees to again demonstrate that same unity as we face even more difficult decisions. At the April 21 Cobb County School Board meeting, board members approved a plan to cut 734 positions and save more than $58 million. School district officials say the cuts will include 579 teachers and 56 para-professionals. The budget cuts also include eliminating 68 central office and support positions. The district has 15,200 employees, including 8,300 teachers. Enrollment is expected to remain flat next year. The cuts were made to deal with a $137 million deficit.

When three long-time friends and master stylists decided to open their own salon four years ago, they knew it would be located in East Cobb. “We live here, we love the community and our clients are here,” says Cynthia Stein, one of the owners.

Cynthia started the salon with Lana Millard and Michelle Swanson because they had a passion for the business and wanted to provide their guests with high-quality services that went beyond the cookie cutter. The sophisticated salon offers hair, skin and nail services. The stylists provide high-end color techniques, gray-blending services for men and women, Japanese straightening and keratin treatments. Although they’ve had many of the same clients for 18 years, the stylists keep up with the latest hair trends and styles. Get your skin ready for summer with a personal consultation. The salon now offers full skin care services, including rejuvenating facials, chemical peels and waxing. If you want to show off your new spring sandals, they provide natural manicures and pedicures with top nail-care products. Cynthia focuses on skin and nail care and serves as the Vice Chair to the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. She believes that good communication provides great results, along with a strict focus on sanitation and disinfection guidelines. Michelle is an experienced stylist who never stops learning and is dedicated to continuing education for her stylists. A master colorist, Michelle is certified in the Milbon Japanese Thermal Hair straightening system. Michelle is the Salon Educator for individuals thru the Georgia Cosmetology apprenticeship program. Lana focuses on staying on top of the latest trends in hair color. She believes an outstanding hair color and flattering cut can make the difference in a person’s appearance and how they feel about themselves. At Wisteria Salon is a beautiful, open space, featuring exposed brick walls, modern fixtures and beautiful displays to showcase their recommended products. Wisteria trees grow abundantly around the salon. “We want our guests to feel renewed and polished when they leave here,” says Lana. The stylists are happy to give full make-overs and make recommendations for which styles would enhance their guests’ features. There is no need to go to Midtown or Buckhead for a professional salon experience. At Wisteria Salon is located at 4961 Lower Roswell Road (next to Women’s Premier Fitness). To make an appointment, visit www.atwisteriasalon.com or call 770-578-0870. The salon is open Tuesday through Saturday. P A I D   A D V E R T I S E M E N T

STAR Students Celebrated at Annual Banquet The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia’s outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. During the past 51 years, the STAR Program has honored more than 21,500 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition.

The following is a list of the East Cobb high school students and teachers honored at the annual Student and Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) banquet:

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation was selected in 1994 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to coordinate the state STAR program in association with the Chamber and the Georgia Department of Education. PAGE’s 75,000+ members are privileged to continue the tradition of recognizing Georgia’s future leaders and honoring the professional educators who have nurtured these scholars. Every accredited high school in Georgia is eligible to participate in the STAR program. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on the test date on the three-part SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Each high school STAR Student is asked to name his/her STAR Teacher. High school STAR Students compete for system titles; and system STAR Students in turn compete for region honors in the 12 STAR Regions. Region winners and their STAR teachers are invited to Atlanta to compete for the state STAR scholarships and awards. Locally, STAR Students and STAR Teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from the more than 165 civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors of the STAR program. The State PAGE STAR Banquet, held in Atlanta on April 28, recognized all local STAR students from all over Georgia.

Project Inside Out Offered by Girl Talk Walton High School girls are leaders at Dodgen and Dickerson Middle Schools, Lassiter High School girls are leaders at Mabry Middle School, and Kell High School girls are leaders at Mcclesky Middle School. What do they all have in common? They are all participating in a national nonprofit organization called Girl Talk. The mission of Girl Talk is to develop key leadership skills, build self esteem and recognize the importance of community service through fun activities. Atlantan Haley Kilpatrick founded Girl Talk, desiretoinspire.org, in 2002 and it’s the fastest growing peer to peer mentoring program that currently reaches more than 30,000 in 27 states each week during the school year. Girl Talk is led by high school girls who serve as mentors for middle school girls. Their meetings focus on life lessons such as materialism, peer pressure, cyber bullying, and many other challenges facing young women today. Project Inside Out is a summer day camp offered by Girl Talk. This is a great opportunity for a very inspiring, fun and motivating experience for both high school girls to serve as counselors and middle school girls to attend sessions to have a great time and learn more about Girl Talk. Who: Rising 6th, 7th & 8th grade girls What: Be inspired by community leader key note messages, group talk, high school girl testimonials and Impact Sessions. Why: Middle School is tough! Marietta Greek Festival Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church presents the 20th Annual Marietta Greek Festival May 14-16. The Marietta Greek Festival will be held on the Church grounds at 3431 Trickum Road in East Cobb. Many people in the East Cobb community have watched The Marietta Greek Festival grow from its humble beginnings at the Cobb County Civic Center, to an anticipated, yearly community event held on the church’s beautiful grounds. 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the Marietta tradition, and all are invited to come celebrate and escape to Greece! From the homemade Greek food and pastries, the live Greek music, authentic Greek dancing, and so much more, it is fun for the whole family! Festival guests will enjoy traditional ethnic specialties such as moussaka, pastitsio, dolmades and the great gyro sandwich. Exquisite Greek pastries, breads, cheese and spinach pies and honey puffs are highlights you won’t want to miss. On the lighter side, the Taverna serves a delicious variety of Greek hors d’oeuvres and salads along with imported beer and wines. The Marietta Greek Festival features a cultural exhibit, live Greek folk music and costumed dance groups, and guests are invited to join in the dancing following. Church tours are also offered throughout the weekend. Visitors to an Orthodox church are usually impressed by the rich color, distinctive iconography and beauty of the interior of an

Orthodox church. The art and design of the church not only create a distinctive atmosphere of worship, but also reflect and embody many of the fundamental beliefs of Orthodoxy. Come and learn about the symbolism of the beautiful Byzantine-style sanctuary. Over a dozen authentic vendors set up their shops inside the Festival’s Agora (Marketplace). Come by to see items created in the Greek tradition, such as fine imported Greek jewelry, handmade linens, hip scarves, delicious Greek cuisine, Greek cookbooks and travel books, decorative art pieces, hand done oil paintings, beautiful Mediterranean candle holders, glass blown items and wood crafted items from the Holy Land--just to name a few. You will find an endless assortment of items that reflect the Greek culture and its traditions. Come to the Marietta Greek Festival, and be Greek for a day! This East Cobb tradition opens Friday, May 14th, at 3 pm. Kids eat FREE on Friday from 3 – 6 pm. The fun continues on Saturday, May 15th, 10am - 11pm, and concludes Sunday, May 16th, 11 am – 7 pm. Admission is just $2 (kids 12 and under are FREE). The Marietta Greek Festival is held at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 3431 Trickum Road, Marietta, 30066. Log onto www.mariettagreekfestival.org for coupons, special offers and more festival information. We look forward to celebrating this 20th Anniversary with you and your families!!! OPA!

Local Farmers Markets Offer Fresh Foods

Recipe of the Month Submitted by East Cobb resident, Kari Squire My mother passed away suddenly 15 years ago in 1995. I was pregnant with my first child at the time. Before children I had a fastpaced career which required me to travel a lot so I rarely cooked. I really didn’t know much about cooking at all. After I had my first child I made the decision to be a stay-at-home mom. I felt like one of my “new” responsibilities was to cook dinner for my family every re Kari Squi evening. Without my knowledge, my mother had decided before she died to write out recipe cards of all of her favorite dishes for me hoping that one day I would find use for them. This is something I treasure every day! I love that they are all in her handwriting instead of typed. It makes me feel like she’s right in the kitchen with me. I’d like to pay tribute to my mother on this Mother’s Day in hopes to inspire other mother’s to provide this same gift to their daughters. I promise your daughters will be forever grateful! I would like to share one of my favorite recipes from my mother’s “recipe box”. My children request it as their birthday meal every year.

Beef & Noodles Ingredients • 1 ½ pounds beef stew meat • 16 ounces frozen egg noodles • 5 teaspoons beef bouillon • 1 cup chopped onion or 2 teaspoons minced onion • ¼ cup chopped parsley or 2 teaspoons parsley flakes Directions: In a large pan or dutch oven place beef stew meat. Add 2 ½ quarts water, onion and parsley. Bring to a boil. Add bouillon and dissolve. Lower heat to simmer. Drop in frozen egg noodles, stirring to separate. Simmer 50 minutes. Depending on the meat you might have to skim the fat from the top. This recipe can also be made with chicken and chicken bouillon. Do you have a family recipe handed down from generation to generation? Or maybe a favorite dish that always gets rave reviews from your family and friends? Well, the EAST COBBER wants to know about them. Show off your favorite recipes in our feature, ‘Recipe of the Month.’ Email them to recipes@eastcobber.com, Re: ‘Recipe of the Month’. Please include your name and contact information with the recipe.

Also include a contact name and phone number for verification purposes. If the contact name and number should be published, indicate that as well. Helpful hints: > Make it short and sweet, not long and flowery. > Releases should be typewritten when possible and double spaced. Use uppercase and lowercase letters, not all capitals. > Double check spelling of names and include the first and last name of everyone mentioned. > If including a photograph, label the event and people on the back. Make sure to identify everyone from left to right, row by row. Whenever possible, limit the number of subjects in the photograph. Be mindful that pictures won’t be returned.

Spectacular Easter Egg Hunt Held at Sprayberry High School On Saturday, April 3, 8,000 people gathered for the first annual Northeast Cobb Easter Egg Drop and Easter Egg Hunt. Held at Sprayberry High School, the highlight of the event was when a helicopter flew over Sprayberry’s Jim Frazier Stadium to drop thousands of eggs on the football field. In addition to collecting eggs, families and children enjoyed face painting, food and jumping on inflatables. This very special event was produced by Piedmont Baptist Church and the Northeast Cobb Business Association.

As part of its ongoing Partners in Education initiative, The Avenue® East Cobb partnered with Lassiter High School’s DECA chapter, an international organization for high school marketing students, to implement fashion marketing principles while rewarding teachers with THE STYLE upGRADE. From more than 40 nominees, Ms. Trudy Green, counselor, and Ms. Cyndi Beal, history, health inclusion and special education teacher, were each selected to win a $1,000 makeover package, including wardrobe, hair, makeup and other prizes from The Avenue. “THE STYLE upGRADE initiative has been a great opportunity for our students to develop real world marketing experience,” said Kari Palmer, marketing teacher, Lassiter High School. “Our continued partnership with The Avenue has enabled students to expand their skills beyond the classroom while also giving back to their school and community.” Fashion Marketing students, in partnership with The Avenue, were responsible for developing public relations tactics, promotional materials, online strategies to promote the contest, as well as makeover concepts for the winners.

Based on personal interviews with each of the nominees, the students selected five finalists, and promoted communitywide voting to determine the two winners. During the March 1-10 voting period, the finalists received more than 7,800 votes. “We were thrilled with the strategic thinking and marketing skills displayed by the students throughout this campaign,” said Kim Tanalgo-Minshew, Marketing Manager, The Avenue East Cobb. “The strong community response is a direct result of their dedication, and The Avenue is excited to reward these deserving teachers.” On March 15, the teachers received their makeovers, including apparel and accessories from Aerosoles, Chico’s and Talbots, eyeglasses courtesy of LensCrafters, and hair styling and makeup courtesy of Van Michael Salon. The transformations were filmed and edited by Lassiter’s Broadcast Video students and will be unveiled to the school at the end of the month on the school-wide video announcements and online at www.thestyleupgrade.com.

No, this is NOT an article about how to attract the opposite sex. The term irresistibly attractive refers to more than that. To be irresistibly attractive means that you attract those things that you desire - great people, opportunities, ideas and more. ss Pete Allen These things COME TO YOU. You do not chase them or seduce them or force them to happen. You simply attract them in to your life. Once you learn how to become more attractive, you are like a magnet bringing more wonderful things in to your business and in to your life. Here are a few ideas to help you to become irresistibly attractive. Realizing that the law of attraction is very powerful, you should begin by turning your attention and your intention to what you desire. This will activate the energy and vibration to bring it about. Think big, really big. Attraction occurs when there is a healthy vacuum between you and what you want to have happen. The wider the gap, the greater the pulling power of attraction. Eliminate the holes in your life. Where are you being depleted - by whom and what? Plug those holes by extending boundaries, raising standards, resolving past issues, and getting in sync. Attraction won’t find you until you’re ready. Get ready. Pay attention to what’s happening to you and around you right now. Attraction LIVES in the moment, not in the future. Are you responding fully to both the problems and the opportunities that are occurring right now, in your space? Gotta start here, where attraction can find you. Increase your awareness of yourself, those around you, how you think, and your life assumptions. Add value to whomever or whatever you encounter. When you add what you have to others’ lives, you become much more attractive. Build a reserve in all areas. When you have enough money, time, space, love, ideas, opportunities, friends, you’ll become an even stronger magnet for what you want— because you won’t NEED it.

Corey Chiropractic Dr. Tisha Corey

How to become….. Irresistibly Attractive

Keep in mind, attraction always starts from your thoughts and intention about what you desire. Don’t focus on what you don’t have because it will bring more of that also. The more you become aware and use the law of attraction for what you desire in your life, the more beautiful your life will become. To contact Pete with questions, comments or more information, phone 770977-2232, email peteaca@bellsouth.net or visit the website: www.breakinfreecoaching.com.

The beautiful center opens May 7 at the corner of Powers Ferry and Windy Hill roads. Gene Reilly, general manager and owner, and Cherri ssOwners Gene Reilly and Feltman, center manager, Cheri Feltman. decided to launch Aspire because they saw a need in the community for a place that focused on overall wellness. “Many women are intimidated by typical gyms, so we wanted to provide them a comfortable and fun place to workout, learn about healthy eating and de-stress,” says Cherri. The Aspire staff is committed to providing an atmosphere that is motivational and energizing—yet comfortable. The 16,000-square-foot facility includes a large group fitness room, a circuit training area with cardio equipment and weights, yoga/Pilates room, a spin class room, as well as locker areas. The center also offers a cardio cinema room, where members can enjoy an instructor-led class with a theater backdrop or just come for the movie of the day. To keep members engaged, the center hosts a full-range of group classes, including yoga, Pilates, TaeBo, zumba, Figure 8 jump-roping, spin and step aerobics. What makes this center unique is its emphasis on the complete person. All members receive a free 30-minute session with a nutritionist upon sign-up. The on-site nutritionist can help members develop healthy eating and weight loss plans. Aspire also will provide educational workshops on healthy eating and wellness to its members. An added benefit to busy moms, Aspire provides onsite childcare for members while they use the center. The Growing Aspirations area combines a child-safe area for play with a variety of toys, books, and activities so children enjoy their time at Aspire as much as their mothers. There is also a separate area dedicated to the care of infants. Moms don’t need to worry because Aspire caregivers are trained to interact, teach, and make children feel like they are at a special place. The center offers convenient membership options, including daily, month-to-month, three month, annual and group. “We want to eliminate any obstacles for women to achieve their personal health goals,” says Gene. The center is open seven days a week. The Center for Children & Young Adults Participating in Communities Take Root Contest The Center for Children & Young Adults is a long term residential shelter for children and teens who have been abused, neglected or abandoned by their parents. The Center provides food, shelter, clothing, education, recreation, medical and psychological care for children and teens whose issues are so severe they can’t be placed in foster care. It is one of the only facilities in Georgia that keeps siblings together. The Center is their home. “The Center,” as it is commonly referred, to is participating in the Communities Take Root contest. The winner receives a complete fruit orchard provided by Edy’s Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation! This prize would not only be a beautiful addition to their campus but would also provide them with a fresh and healthy supply of fruit. For nine years, master gardeners have been conducting horticulture activities at The Center. What began as fun activi-

ties with the youngest children has grown into vegetable gardening with older teens. Master gardeners created numerous gardens...a vegetable garden, a native plant garden, bog garden, shade garden and a certified wildlife habitat. Freshens Inc., built a small greenhouse on campus and collaborates with master gardeners in growing vegetables. Private donations provide a garden shed that stores supplies, child garden tools and more. Master gardeners have been training teens to make garden beds, fertilize, water and plant vegetables, trees and shrubs. The garden provides nutritious ingredients and has also been a very rewarding experience for the kids who live there. Some boys and girls have taken on specific duties and earned spending money for their work. It has created a sense of pride as the boys and girls get to literally experience the “fruits” of their labor! A goal is to increase the vegetable yield and have teens sell vegetables at the farmers market or at a vegetable stand and learn business skills. It has become a source of pride as the boys and girls get to literally experience the “fruits” of their labor! Planting fruit trees and shrubs on its campus would enhance their program. Fruit would supplement the food supply at The Center where-meals are served to approximately 50 people, 3 meals/day, 365 days a year, to staff and residents on campus. The Center for Children & Young Adults needs your help to win this orchard! Simply go to this website: www.communitiestakeroot.com and look them up under Marietta, Georgia. You can vote once each day and they need you to vote EVERY day! It only takes about 30 seconds and can have a huge impact. Voting ends August 31st at 11:59pm.

‘‘I’mtakehelping others care of their hearts.’’ “I was exercising and when my heart rate rose, my jaw went numb and I had some shortness of breath. I called my doctor and saw him the next day. After just a few minutes, he sent me to WellStar Cardiovascular Medicine. It was a huge shock to find that I needed a quintuple bypass. But Dr. Cooper and the whole cardiology team really listened and took care of me. “This was a life-changing experience. I’ve just become chair of the WellStar Foundation’s Cardiac Community Council. It’s important to me to give back and help raise money and awareness for the people that gave me my health, and my peace of mind.”

If you have heart, you can do just about anything. Living well takes planning. It takes perseverance. And most of all, it takes heart. That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals, WellStar is helping people like Tony with a world-class cardiac network. From prevention to catheterization and open-heart surgery to rehabilitation, we put our whole hearts into taking care of yours.
