publisher’s note

On the Cover

School’s out, summer camps are in, and visions of vacations dance in our heads. Summer is highlighted by two celebrations: Father’s Day and Fourth of July. For the fifteenth consecutive year, the June/July edition of the EAST COBBER features the winner of our annual “Father of the Year” Essay Contest. Many of the essays I read told of the simple things dads do for their families: going to the zoo, coaching Little League, cutting the grass, or washing the car. It also became apparent that lessons were being learned from these activities: hard work, dedication, importance of the family bond, and more. By sponsoring the “Father of the Year” contest, the EAST COBBER focuses on the often overlooked and underplayed role that fathers serve. This “contest” serves as a reminder that there are loving, caring men actively participating in their family’s lives and honors the important role of fathers in our society. Speaking of dads . . . I recall my dad passing plenty of time tinkering with cars, watching football (and basketball, and baseball) games, cutting the grass, ushering at church, and going to work everyday. Those memories are also laced with lessons learned: the importance of education/lifelong learning, loyalty, strong faith in God, and helping others. Another important value my father instilled in me was patriotism. The son of Italian immigrants, my father was ever mindful and grateful for all the opportunities this country has to offer. His patriotism went beyond the “I Am Proud To Be An American” bumper sticker he placed on the bumper of every American-made car he owned. By reading the local paper every day, volunteering on local campaigns, and voting every election, he kept the dream of our American forefathers as well as his immigrant father’s alive. My father celebrated Fourth of July year-round by caring enough to make life better for himself, his family, and in his community. To me, this is the true meaning of the Fourth of July holiday. God bless you, Dad. God Bless America.

In celebration of Father’s Day, the EAST COBBER front cover features this year’s Father of the Year, Todd Hughes. As the father of three girls: Kelsey, 13; Maggie, 6; and Faith, 3, Todd describes fatherhood as being “all about his girls.” “I found my purpose in life. My favorite part of being a dad is nurturing and teaching the girls important life lessons,” shares Todd. As owner of a painting company, Todd manages to find time to getting the girls ready for school in the morning or eating out together. Todd also finds time to play tennis and volunteer at his church. Todd lives in the Robinson Oaks subdivision with his wife of 8 years,

There are many men who deserve to be father of the year because they love their children with all their heart. Most, however, wouldn’t sacrifice all of their time, money, and energy to raising their child alone when the mother walked out. I met Todd when Kelsey, now 13, was 4 years old. Her mother abandoned her when she was three, and ssTodd and Carolyn Hughes with Todd had to take their daughters, Kelsey,13 (aka over as her mother “Butterfinger”); Maggie, 6 (AKA “Honey and her father. Mustard”); and Faith, 3 (aka “Pickle”). Unlike most women, I got to see how Todd would be as a father long before we had children together. Todd and Kelsey have a special bond like no other father and daughter. As a pre-schooler, she went to work with him everyday because he couldn’t afford daycare. He cooked her meals, painted her nails, styled her curly hair, and held her at night when she cried from nightmares. Kelsey was a part of our courtship from the very beginning. He did such a wonderful job with her that she was one of the many reasons I married him! Today, we have two more girls. Maggie is six and Faith is three. He gets Faith and Kelsey ready and off to school each morning while I take Maggie to school with me. Last year, he took all three girls to school every morning! He makes breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the girls with no complaints. He paints all of their nails much better than I ever could! More importantly, he is not just the provider and discipliner. Because he had been a “mother”, he is now instinctively a nurturer as well. We always get compliments about our girls. They are a reflection of Todd’s parenting. He is so humble, and credits God for the strength to discipline with a loving hand. Todd Hughes deserves to be father of the year. He is an inspiration to mothers and fathers alike!

Have you ever heard a mover say he “loved the moving boxes” that he transported? Or a relocation specialist refer to moving boxes as “gems”? Both of these comments were made about a completely new concept in moving boxes that has just become available in the Atlanta area. Called The GeoBox, this eco-friendly moving solution offers a green alternative to traditional cardboard boxes. These boxes save time and money, as well as help the environment. In fact, Tina Sensing, owner of Sensing Transitions for Seniors (relocation specialists for older adults) couldn’t be happier with her new find. “I am thrilled to have found The GeoBox!” she says. “Besides keeping cardboard out of the landfills (which our clients are raving about), these boxes are sturdier, much easier to transport, are a great space saver as compared to regular cardboard boxes, and are at a comparable price. The GeoBox is a gem, and we couldn’t be more satisfied!” The GeoBox company supplies 100% recycled plastic moving boxes that you rent for local moves. The boxes and supplies are delivered to your door and then picked up at your new address after the move, saving valuable time as well as eliminating the headaches associated with box removal. The boxes have attached lids that close tightly so no taping is needed. Because of their design, the boxes are quicker and easier to stack and carry, which simplifies the move whether a professional mover is enlisted or you do it yourself. The box handles have a unique ergonomic design for easy lifting. They also take up less space in the moving vehicle and do not shift during transport. If it rains, no problem. These boxes are waterproof. Using zero-waste materials in manufacturing makes the boxes environmentally responsible. No trees are cut down, and no cardboard fills up the landfills. The company simply cleans the boxes after each move. They are then ready to be rented again, generating no waste. According to Karen Lehman, president of The GeoBox, “Our purpose is to make your move as easy and affordable as possible while minimizing the impact on the environment.” Moving packages, which can include boxes, recycled paper, bubble wrap, dollies, and puffy stuff (an all-natural replacement for Styrofoam packing peanuts which smells like popcorn) are available to save you even more money. Free delivery and pickup are available in Alpharetta, Marietta, Roswell, Sandy Springs, and Woodstock. A minimal delivery fee will apply to other metro areas. As active participants in the green community, The GeoBox donates 1% of its profits to the Georgia Aquarium, which supports, conducts, and leads research on environment and conservation issues. Make your next move a green one. To find out more information about The GeoBox or to order boxes and supplies, visit www.thegeobox.com or call 1 877 4-GEOBOX.

How fast could you complete this math problem: (455*156) /78? How quickly would it take your child to solve it? How about finding the answer without writing anything down? To see demonstrations of children solving complex math problems, visit www. ssAn ALOHA student completes discoverthegenius. an exercise using an Abacus. com. ALOHA Mind Math teaches kids to complete complex mathematical problems in their head. ALOHA stands for ABACUS Learning of Higher Arithmetic and was adapted to teach the children of Malaysia in 1993. Since then, ALOHA has grown internationally to more than 3,000 centers worldwide. Radha Katta and Shwetha Hombaiah recently opened an ALOHA location in East Cobb. “When my own children took the course, I was amazed at what they were able to accomplish in a short time,” said Radha. “Along with Shwetha, I became interested in exposing more children to this learning process.” ALOHA is a brain training program used to perform complex arithmetic calculation without the aid of any external calculating device, but it doesn’t just help with math skills. Mental arithmetic training has been proven to sharpen memory, increase visualization, and improve focusing skills. Just as physical fitness can only be acquired through physical exercise, mental fitness can only be achieved through mental exercise. The type and amount of mental exercise a person receives will determine his/her brain “muscles”. ALOHA offers two groups of classes: junior level (5-7 year olds) and senior level (7-12 year olds) after school and on weekends. Each grouping has multiple achievement levels. Students take classes once a week for two hours each session, and the classroom experience is very important to learning the concepts. Throughout the world, children challenge each other in ALOHA math competitions, which showcase the amazing skills they’ve learned.

Come in and check out our two story playhouse for the kids! 10 June/July 2010

ALOHA can also increase a child’s confidence and interest in learning. “The exercises we teach are designed to stimulate the left side of the brain, which helps with total brain development,” said Shwetha. “ALOHA is designed to make math fun and can reduce anxiety for children who fear numbers.” New classes are starting all the time. For more information about ALOHA, visit www.aloha-usa.com or call 678-486-1901. ALOHA is located near the intersection at East Piedmont Rd and Sandy Plains Rd at 2440 Sandy Plains Rd, Bldg 28, Marietta.

Sandestin Resort Offers Upscale R&R By Cynthia M. Rozzo

Years ago, they called Destin, the Panhandle coastal town, a ``fishing village.’’ It’s still a major fishing locale, with the largest charter fishing fleet in the state, but the main reason visitors come is for its beaches. The brilliant white sand here is made of quartz and it actually squeaks when you walk on it. Caressed by the emerald green Gulf waters, the beaches slope gently, so one can wade quite a ways out. Those stunning beaches have made Destin a popular vacation destination—especially with East Cobbers. Destin has become so popular, their roads are choked with cars--much like Atlanta’s rush hour. Last time I visited Destin, I sat in one of those beach traffic jams along Highway 98. And as traffic slowed to a crawl, I studied the humongous Sandestin sign that loomed down and it was then that I made a mental note that the next time I visited Destin I would stay in this gated resort in the hopes it would free me from this choked traffic scene. Fast forward to spring break 2010, and after a six hour ride, my family and I arrived at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. There is nothing in the area that compares with Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort- the biggest resort along the Panhandle-with 1,600 condos, a hotel and four golf courses built on 2,400 acres. Literally, a city unto itself – Sandestin has everything you could possibly need in a vacation paradise. There are five different areas: Beachfront, Beachside, Dockside, Village and Bayside, and each has a different feeling and a variety of accommodations. I stayed near the area known as the Village of Baytowne Wharf in a condo with a full kitchen, living room and three bedrooms. A good chunk of the resort is on the beach side, but the bulk of it is on the other side of the highway, on Choctawhatchee Bay. Free trams go back and forth all day and into the evening, and most of the Sandestin homeowners have a golf cart in the driveway for getting around. The resort also provides bicycles to ride, and there are paths everywhere. As a full-service resort, it’s possible to park the car and not touch it for a week. As their “off in our own little world” slogan suggests, Sandestin is as good a place to kick back, or if you wish, get out and try all sorts of activities-- all right there on the resort. This is a golfer’s paradise. With four courses and year-round play and with the breezes coming off the bay, my husband and oldest son, Lee (13), enjoyed a few rounds of golf. I’m no golfer, so I can only say that, like the rest of the Sandestin grounds and properties, the courses looked impeccably kept. The Sandestin marina offers sailboats and waverunners for rent, as well as pontoon boats, fishing charters, parasailing and small cruise boats. There’s a full spa on the property, as well as a kids’ program to keep the little ones busy all day long. On the beach side, www.eastcobber.com

I rented a couple of chairs and an umbrella and watched my kids make sandcastles. Tennis players at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort are not forgotten! There’s a choice of playing on excellent clay, grass, or hard surface courts. At night, there’s a variety of restaurants on the property, most of them clustered, along with a lot of shops, in The Village of Baytowne Wharf. The Village of Baytowne is expertly arranged in five “neighborhoods,” with each featuring a local historic theme. The village replicates the experience of walking around a small town and with shops to browse and restaurants to try. My kids got an aerial view of Destin’s Baytowne Wharf Village and its surroundings as they soared across the lagoon on Northwest Florida’s only Zipline. There is also a ropes course for skill-testing fun. For dining, the choices are numerous from casual to upscale award-winning restaurants. The Village is open to anyone, whether staying as residents in the Resort or not. The events plaza in its center is a popular place for coastal residents, who find free fun happenings and concerts on Wednesday nights yearround. I found this ultra-planned resort was perfect for me since I wanted to enjoy the sugar-white sands and emerald green water of Destin without the hassle of too much tourist traffic. There are so many more wonderful features and activities at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. After a few days at Sandestin, we reluctantly packed up and left, feeling like we’d barely scratched the surface and vowing to return. You’ll just have to experience it for yourself. Throughout the year you can ask about featured rates and events.

East Cobber Gives VOICE To Survivors of Sexual Abuse By Brittany Hall

ssAngela Williams, Founder; and Tom Scales, Executive Director of Voice.

The statistics say it all. There are 39 million victims of child sexual abuse in the US alone. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Only one in ten will tell. Angela Williams, founder of VOICE Today, a non-profit organization focused on breaking the silence and cycle of child sexual abuse, can relate to the statistics too well. “As a survivor of child sexual abuse, I wanted to keep that from happening to another child,” Williams said. Williams began VOICE after a 25 year career in real estate. She felt a call to write her story in the book From Sorrows to Sapphires, which honestly portrays her emotional journey through abuse to healing. In her book, she goes through every emotion from childhood to adulthood and how it affected her life and relationships.

“It is such an escape for me to write,” Williams said. “I was able to write everything that burdened me. From there, I felt moved to start VOICE so I could help others who have been through the same thing.” With the support of her husband, Phillip, and two children, Ashley and Jacob, Williams was able to build VOICE to the organization it is today. The mission of VOICE is not only to provide protection to children but also healing to survivors. “Child sexual abuse is a silent and unspoken epidemic,” Williams said. “A survivor may struggle their entire life to bring peace and to shed the feelings of shame and filth.” VOICE works with survivors to find the peace through community and open and honest workshops. “The workshops are the heart of VOICE,” Tom Scales Executive Director at VOICE Today said. There are currently four workshops ranging from providing healing for survivors to how to talk to your children about sex and personal boundaries. “Society has its head buried in the sand when it comes to talking about sexual abuse,” Williams said. “We want to help people understand that this can be prevented.”

Thanks for Reading the East Cobber 26 June/July 2010

Angie also runs a support group for survivors of child abuse every first and third Tuesday of the month at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. The VOICE office is located at 3885 Shallowford Road, Suite110, in East Cobb. For more information visit www.voicetoday.org..

Local Resident Set to Paddle Seven Day Kayak Adventure event will include educational programs on the rivers’ cultural and natural history, tours of facilities and historic sites located along the river, nightly games and entertainment, and even a research program in which participants will help collect chemical and biological data to give a snapshot of the current health of the Broad and Savannah rivers. In the past, paddlers participating in the trip have ranged in age from 4 to 74 and family groups are common. At an all-inclusive cost of about $59 per day per person (includes meals and registration fees), the trip is a vacation value, and one that will not soon be forgotten, according to event organizers. “We’ve had people come on this trip that have never paddled before and now they are life-long paddlers,” said Joe Cook, coordinator of the event. “This is an adventure that changes peoples’ lives.” ssMike McCarthy

East Cobb resident Mike McCarthy is set to paddle 82 miles this summer as part of Georgia River Network’s Paddle Georgia 2010 on Northeast Georgia’s Broad and Savannah rivers. The annual canoe and kayak adventure brings together more than 300 people each year from across the Southeast and the country for a week-long journey. This year, paddlers launch from Franklin Springs, GA, on June 19 and complete their trip June 25 in downtown Augusta, GA. Fashioned after the annual Bicycle Ride Across Georgia, Paddle Georgia is more than just a canoe and kayak trip. The

As Mike McCarthy shares, “I have become quite the river advocate and I am now very passionate about water resource issues.” The trip also serves as a fundraiser for Georgia River Network and local watershed groups, including the Broad River Watershed Association and Savannah Riverkeeper. Georgia River Network is a non-profit 501c3 organization working to ensure a clean water legacy by engaging and empowering Georgians to protect and restore our rivers from the mountains to the coast. ssGlendy Martin stands behind her Jalopy Jelly jars

Free Lesson and Interview

Three years ago, East Cobb resident and Wheeler High School alum Glendy Martin was working as a hairdresser when she began making candied jalapeños in her kitchen. Glendy says she had always loved pepper jellies and recipe experimenting, so when she first brought home an armful of jalapeño peppers and said she was going to “try something new,” her husband didn’t suspect anything out of the ordinary.

East Cobb location: 1518 Blackwell Rd - Marietta

Little did he know that the sweet jalapenos would be such a hit both at Glendy’s salon and among family and friends who encouraged her to start marketing the product. Without a commercial kitchen, Glendy found co-packer Hillside Orchard Farms, a company that makes a similar product, to produce the relish, and soon quit her job to promote Jalopy Jelly throughout the community.

NO COURT DIVORCE

Today, Jalopy Jelly can be found in over 30 specialty stores in the Atlanta metro area and in Whole Foods stores in Georgia. Glendy says she already ships from Chicago to Canada and is looking forward to expanding to Whole Foods stores across the southeast. “When people taste it,” says Glendy, “we can pretty much watch them in a five second period turn around and come back.”

Jalopy Jelly is served best atop cream cheese with crackers, but it is also great as a condiment or marinade, or in hushpuppies, baked beans, or omelets. All natural, the jelly sells for $6.99 a jar. Since its launch in 2007, Jalopy Foods has expanded its line of products to include both Georgia Peach and, most recently, Mango flavors. Glendy says Pineapple is expected to be released this summer, and Maraschino Cherry is in the works. Glendy and her husband, Scott, have three children: Erin (29), Tyler (26), and Mallory (19), and, when not cooking, enjoy going to the movies and babysitting their two grandkids. Look for Glendy at the Marietta Farmer’s Market Saturdays through November, from 8am to noon. Glendy’s story will air on Food Network’s Cooking Channel on June 21st on the new show, Food Crafters. Small Dog Rescue and Humane Society Saves Homeless Dogs By Keren Goldshlager

ssVolunteer Lisa Olens with her adopted dogs, Nikki and Murphy

Each year, millions of dogs are euthanized in shelters. Small Dog Rescue and Humane Society is working hard to remedy this problem, little by little (dog, that is). When asked why it is best to adopt a rescue dog as opposed to a dog that has been bred, Fair Sutherlin, Facility Volunteer Coordinator from the SDR, replies simply, “Because you are saving a life.” Small Dog Rescue and Humane Society is a nonprofit organization managed almost entirely by volunteers and donations, with about a dozen of the regular volunteers coming directly from the East Cobb area. Small Dog Rescue (SDR) houses about 40 dogs in their Alpharetta facility and 40 others in foster homes. These dogs were either picked up by Animal Control, abandoned by their owners, or rescued from kill shelters in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee; however, all adoptions occur in the North Metro Atlanta area only. The SDR is a no-kill facility: once a dog is accepted into its care, it will be kept until it finds a home. To encourage those who may be concerned about adopting a rescue dog that may presumably have an unclear past, Sutherlin assures the public that rescue dogs “are the most wonderful dogs. They’re so loving and grateful.” She herself has adopted 3 dogs, and she genuinely believes that they know they have been rescued. Many East Cobbers have also found their rescue dogs to be affectionate and loyal pets for life. Lisa Olens, a regular volunteer and an involved East Cobb resident, has adopted her “two furry children,” Nikki and Murphy, from SDR and truly believes that rescue dogs can “bloom and blossom” when matched with the right family. www.eastcobber.com

For those who do not have the time or means available to adopt a dog, the SDR still offers many great opportunities for East Cobb residents to get involved. Volunteers can attend adoption days in nearby Sandy Springs, or they can work at the actual facility in Alpharetta and clean kennels, walk and play with the dogs, or give baths. Certain programs allow mothers and daughters to work together, so that children as young as age 12 can begin contributing to a good cause. There is also a foster program that allows families to keep a certain dog temporarily until it finds a permanent home. Lisa Olens and her family have specifically participated in foster care and Youth Volunteer programs, taking advantage of the opportunity to get their son, Jonathon, involved. “There is a lot you can do, depending on your talent, time, and interest,” Lisa comments. “The SDR is very willing to accommodate what you can give them and what you can do for them.” Volunteer activities in the past have ranged from Pope High School Key Club bake sales to silent auctions to microchip clinics at the local pet boutique, Hot Dogs Cool Cats. “We love volunteers,” remarks Sutherlin. “We are completely funded by donations so… volunteers and people who can spread the word about what good work we do are great.” Regular volunteers at the SDR pick a naming theme each month and name their dogs accordingly. Says Sutherlin with a smile, “One month we’ll have athletes, one month we’ll have movie stars from the 50s,” so you’ll notice a wide variety of entertaining and adorable pet names ranging from Buster Butterbeer to Campbell Brown! Adoptable dogs are available for viewing on SDR’s website at smalldoghumane.org. Here, you can also check for the locations of upcoming adoption events. Adoptions are held locally every Saturday from 12-4pm at Petco in Sandy Springs on 5938 Roswell Road NE. At least one Sunday a month, rescue dogs are also taken to the PetSmart at North Point on 6370 North Point Parkway in Alpharetta. The SDR looks forward to seeing you soon!

Pink Eye or Swimmer’s Eye? Did you know that “pink eye” is not always contagious? It’s true. “Pink Eye” is really just a term used to describe any redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva. That’s the transparent covering at the front of your eyeball. Pink eye or “conjunctivitis,” has one of three causes: an infection, an allergy, or a chemical reaction. Infections are usually caused by bacteria, but can be caused by a virus. The bacterial kind is very contagious. You should be careful to wash your hands frequently and not share your antibiotic eye drops, washcloths or towels with anyone. Viral infections normally are taken care of by your body’s own defenses. If your eyes are red from allergies or chemicals, it’s best to try to remove the source of the irritation. That may mean anything from using artificial tear and prescription eye drops to wearing goggles when swimming in chlorinated water. Do the right thing and see your eye care provider if you suspect a problem.

The Coach’s Corner Are YOU Prepared for the Unexpected? Every day we face unexpected events in our world – devastating tornadoes in the Midwest, the volatile stock market, a massive oil spill in the Gulf, the economic collapse in Greece and Europe, and unprecedented political unrest in our own country. None of us are completely safe or shielded from unexpected events. You (your business and your thinking) will no doubt be affected by some of these events, and who knows what else? There will always be unexpected events in our lives.

ss Pete Allen

Are you ready? How can you be ready? No one can prepare for the unexpected. Just the same, when unexpected events or catastrophes come into our personal and business lives, we seem to always find a way to handle them, at least to some degree. More often than not, we just adjust to living with it. We feel victimized and miserable. It doesn’t have to be that way. You can be prepared – and that means adopting the right mental perception. Here are some ideas that may help: • Accept the fact that with the event will come changes, and you want those changes, as best as possible, to support you. • Make a conscious effort to get out of the fear of the event and what could happen. • Know that you always have choices on how to see the situation and how to react to it. • Keep in mind your ultimate goal to keep centered and in a place of happiness.

Divide a sheet of paper into two columns: (1) The Down Side of the Choice and (2) The Upside of the Choice. List at least three or more choices. As this percolates in your mind, you will be able to see it more clearly. This will help get you out of the fear, stop the negative self-talk, and allow you to be more at peace. You will then be in a position which will enable you to make a much better decision. From this place you are better suited to do what is best for you and those about you. Once you prepare mentally and emotionally, you are now ready to set your intentions on how you would like to see it. Trust your intuition to bring you the right ideas to act upon. Miche: One Bag. Endless Possibilities. When Melanie Payne bought her first Miche Bag, she proudly carried and displayed it for all her friends to see. Her family noticed how excited she was about the concept of changing the bag’s cover without actually moving the contents from one bag to another. “You’re selling that bag!” her family told her. And, indeed, ssMelanie Payne within a few months, Melanie loved it so much that she decided to become the Miche Bag Distributor for Cobb and Cherokee Counties. Miche Bag is a woman’s dream: you can change the cover of your handbag to match your outfit or mood without moving the contents, thus saving you time and space. Change your look in just 3 seconds, it’s that easy. It’s no wonder her business is doing so well. “It is

definitely a ‘wow’ product,” Melanie says. “Women love the Miche Bag. It sells itself.” The Miche Bag concept is simple: 1) Choose the size of your bag (small or large). 2) Choose your Miche Bag “shells.” 3) Add the accessories (strap) to match. There are over 40 shells for the classic bag and over 20 for the large bag, with new shells released each month. With a warehouse in the metro Atlanta area, customers and reps are guaranteed to get their product fast. Miche Bag is growing so fast and she is looking for sales reps to help show the product. She notes, “Miche is not a multilevel company and is quota free. Our product is stylish, high quality, and fun to sell.” It is a low-stress business where you can become an independent sales rep and sell through your own web site, in-home parties, or do individual sales. To find out more about Miche Bag opportunities or to host a party visit: www.georgiamiche.com or phone Melanie at 770-572-9174.

East Cobb Students Earn Eagle Scout Rank The Cherokee Patrol, made up of eight high school seniors in East Cobb, is a unique group. Besides entering Cub Scouts at the same time, they have earned numerous awards including the Baden Powell National Honor Patrol, Veteran Summer Camper Award, World Conservation Award, and U.S. Heritage Award. “This is a special group of boys. Each Scout is involved in their school athletics and music programs. Each of the boys works, participates in school activities, and makes time to camp, fundraise, and lead fellow Scouts in their patrol and Troop, “said Al Friel, former Scoutmaster for Troop 1011. The Scouts from the Cherokee Patrol are exceptional and are a part of a movement of leaders that are preparing to lead our communities. “Eagle Scouts have a responsibility to themselves, their families and their communities. The Eagle Scouts are expected to achieve and lead. Last year the Atlanta Area Council awarded 527 Eagle awards, a new record for the council.

ssEast Cobb Eagle Scouts: Back Row (l-r:) Benjy Stamberger, George Merriam, Kirk Malcolm, Connor Crank; Front Row (l-r:) Joseph Privateer, Preston Ehlers, Alex Walgren. Not pictured is Jonathan Gopel, who will have his Eagle Ceremony at a later date.

In March, seven members of the Cherokee Patrol in Troop 1011 were honored when they were awarded the highest rank a Scout can earn, Eagle Scout. To achieve this rank, Scouts enter a strenuous program that includes earning 21 merit badges and completion of a highly involved service project. Due to the rigorous elements of the program, fewer than five percent of all Scouts entering the program achieve the rank of Eagle. It is even rarer that eight Scouts, who entered the Scouting program together, would reach the rank together.

The new Eagle Scouts come from three different schools, Walton High School, Wheeler High School, and Woodward Academy. Next year each Scout will be attending colleges across the east coast. One Scout, Kirk Malcolm, will be attending the United State Naval Academy. In addition to Malcom, the other members of the patrol are George Merriam, Joseph Privateer, Alex Walgren, Connor Crank, Preston Ehlers, Benjy Stamerger and Johnathan Gopel. Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America has been the nation’s foremost program of character development and values-based leadership training for youth ages 7-20. Legislative Recap By Karen Hallacy, Georgia PTA The legislative session is over and it was a brutal one with the State having to severely cut the budget for both the remainder of FY 10 and for FY 11. Those cuts ripple down to the local level and help explain, in part, why Cobb has a $137M hole in its budget. Legislation was passed to provide greater flexibility to school systems to deal with the tight budgets. Below are the highlights (or lowlights depending on what you want to call them) of the legislative session: • Additional cuts to funding for school nurses (in line with the general 3% percent cut to education) • Increases in class sizes with system averaging allowed (so class sizes may vary from school to school as long as the overall average in the district doesn’t exceed the allowed maximum. There are certain restrictions based on limits for gifted, special needs, IEPs, etc. that affect state funding.) • Additional cuts in transportation funding (transportation is only funded above 1.5 miles from school and the state only pays 20% of the cost of transportation – even less now). • Additional $527M in ‘austerity cuts’ (funding that the school districts earned based on the state funding formula but the state doesn’t pay because it lops a percentage off the top after it makes its calculations). ARRA funds restored $100M of this so net $427M. This is on top of the $939M cut in last year’s amended budget.

• Students in elementary and secondary school are allowed to carry an epi pen on them if it is prescribed to them. • Driver’s license exams must be given in English. No other language is allowed. • Proof of citizenship is now required in order to register to vote • Calculation for HOPE will begin freshman year so students can see if they qualify. • Drivers cannot use a cell phone or text while driving. • Students in eighth grade will now develop a preferred focus program and have an Individual Graduation Plans (IGP) to help set their path towards graduation. The plans will be reviewed annually in high school. • PSAT exams and AP tests will only be funded for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch (formerly all 10th grade PSAT tests were covered and one AP exam). • Eliminated CRCTs in 1st and 2nd grade and the writing exam in 3rd and 5th grade. • New rules to define bullying and how it will be handled • New rules in how the courts can handle zero tolerance violations. School can look at intent as long as a gun is not involved. • Teachers do not have to earn PLU credits for the next several years. Karen Hallacy is the 2nd Vice President of Georgia PTA and is also the Legislative chairperson of Georgia PTA, Dodgen Middle School and Walton High School. She has been involved in advocacy at the local, state and national level for over seven years. Her children attend Dodgen Middle School, Walton High School and Caltech University.

• Drivers of pickup trucks must now wear seatbelts. • Guns allowed in school parking lots in cars (but not on the general grounds). They are also allowed at sporting events. Not allowed in school buildings or churches. • No sales tax holiday this year.

Vote By Mail Our country works best when everyone exercises the most important right of citizenship: the right to vote. For that reason, the process of voting should be as simple, convenient, and fair as possible. Across the country, an increasing number of cities, counties and states are making it easier for citizens to vote without standing in long lines or using potentially flawed electronic voting equipment. Cobb County Board of Elections has embraced this trend. Any Cobb County voter may request a Vote-by-Mail ballot. No “reason” is required. The Cobb County Board of Elections’ website www.cobbelections.org reviews the required steps to vote by mail.

Early Voting Offered for Primary Election If you are going to be out of town during an important election and you still want to vote, you can easily register for early voting. Registering for early voting also helps you avoid standing in long lines on Election Day or rushing to the polling station right after work. Duties of a State Senator are to represent the citizens of their district in the GA General Assembly. That service directly affects the quality of life and personal safety of every citizen. It is imperative that State officials work closely with local officials to achieve collective goals without just shifting the cost and responsibility to local government. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE, AND, IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT? In today’s economy, the most important and difficult issue facing State government is to rein in spending yet maintain quality services that will meet our constitutional responsibilities. A State Senator represents a substantial number of people, their values and their perspectives in the State Senate of Georgia. Your Senator can have a significant impact and should be a leader in promoting your values and advocating policies that support your family; but only with the right leadership in that office. Since I was elected I have helped reduce spending increases, reduced classroom sizes, protected women and children from sexual predators, fought to reduce traffic congestion, restricted illegal immigration, lowered taxes for seniors, and helped make healthcare more affordable. Please describe the training and experience that qualify you for this office. The past 6 years I served as your Senator and have effectively led conservative public policy initiatives to cut taxes and reduce the size of government and encourage more personal responsibility. Leading a healthcare committee and passing free market based health care reforms, passing lawsuit reform, restricting illegal immigration, tackling tough transportation and education issues and leading numerous shows a track record of service. I began my public service as an Assistant United States Attorney, with the US Department of State and on the Reagan White House Advance Team. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE, AND, IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT? We must continue to create a better economic environment for job creation and get our spending under control; otherwise, it is difficult to effectively address education, transportation, healthcare and other important issues. We must reduce the size of government by determining which government services are essential as reflected in our state Constitution. Non-essential programs should be eliminated, cut or privatized in order to save money. I have opposed tax increases and lost my senate leadership position for representing you. Increasing spending and raising taxes is not an option. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST, AND WHY? PLEASE DESCRIBE THE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE THAT QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS OFFICE. As a parent, an advocate and as an activist, I have worked to improve education in Cobb for 15 years by fighting for school district transparency, true access for all citizens, accountability and ethics in government, battling against wasteful district spending, working to keep taxes low, help refine bullying policies and legislation, and halt calendar ‘creep’. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE, AND, IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT? Righting our financially viable course and rebuilding the credibility and trust between the school district, teachers, and the public it serves are the most important issues facing the district right now. Economically, we must challenge the district to live within its means. Credibility will return when true transparency takes place. I intend to open some windows. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST, AND WHY? I observed graciousness and a concerted effort to remain strong for our children by heroic teachers, bus drivers and staff during the week leading up to and throughout the very painful process of the Reduction in Force events, more concerned about how our students would react and the impact it would have than allow our kids to see their pain. Good schools = good property values. Good quality graduates = good hiring pool for companies who might want to locate in Cobb. Good property values + good hiring pool = more income for our county which allows us to hire back teachers and keep the esteemed and desirable reputation we’ve had for many years in Cobb County. Please describe the training and experience that qualify you for this office. My “day job” involves negotiating transactions to a win-win conclusion on a daily basis. I have successfully owned and operated several businesses in Cobb County and I believe a person with a strong business background is needed to navigate the board’s way through these tough economic times. I have a law degree which would lend valuable insight and good information to the board. I have held positions of leadership on multiple boards over the years and know what it takes to build a consensus amongst my peers to reach a favorable conclusion. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE, AND, IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT? The most important issue for the school board is dealing with the budget and the streamlining of the operation of our school system within the constraints of our finances. Nobody wants to see the quality of education in Cobb County decline or the loss of our great teachers, however, with the current economy, someone has to step in and help with the hard decisions that must be made. Moon, AIA, LEED AP 770-757-8305 Moon4Cobb.com stephenmoon@comcast.net AGE: 40 CITY, STATE BORN: Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, GA EDUCATION: Sprayberry HS, Georgia Tech (Bachelor of Science, Architecture), University of Kentucky (Bachelor of Architecture/professional degree) OCCUPATION: Architect FAMILY: My wife, Victoria, and I celebrate 15 years in June 2010. We have three children: Max, 6; Sam, 3; and Rosie, 1. HOBBIES: Family trips, golf, guitar and piano ORGANIZATIONS YOU BELONG TO: Northeast Cobb Homeowners Group Board of Directors; Communities of Chastain Homeowners Association, Past Board Member; Habitat For Humanity Board of Directors; Leadership Cobb Alumni Board; Blackwell Elementary PTSA Volunteer; Cobb Chamber of Commerce; Piedmont Church; Livable Communities Coalition Advisory Board; Urban Land Institute, Past Board member; ULI Smart Growth Roundtable, Past Co-Chair; Sustainable Atlanta Building Ordinance, Lead Partners Task Force; Northeast Cobb Business Association HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN EAST COBB/COBB COUNTY? I have lived in East Cobb my entire life, from the time that I was born in 1970, except 1994-2003, when I was working in Louisville, KY. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ELECTED TO A PUBLIC OFFICE? IF YES, PLEASE LIST OFFICE AND YEAR(S): I have never held elected public office. I have served Cobb County as a citizen on the Cobb SPLOST Citizens Oversight Committee (2009-10) and the Canton Road Master Plan (2004-05). PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS OFFICE’S DUTIES & ITS IMPACT ON EAST COBB. The SPLOST Committee and Canton Road planning have given me great insight into Cobb’s government. Each of these programs impacts East Cobb by providing jobs, economic growth, and community improvement. SPLOST tax is down and any new HOST tax is a risky scheme. Pennies can’t solve all our problems. Please describe the training and experience that qualify you for this office. Architects make dreams come true everyday. I am trained to plan into the future, balance budgets, and make critical decisions about health, safety and welfare of citizens. Architects are educated, trained, tested, licensed and required by law to undergo annual education. I am LEED accredited, creating sustainable designs and communities. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE, AND, IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT? Families are struggling in this economy. I’m an Operations Manager and Dad who will manage money conservatively for Cobb just like I do at work and home. Tough decisions are likely coming on County services. We need Commissioners who produce jobs, projects, and financials in the real world, not hobbyists. WHO DO YOU ADMIRE MOST, AND WHY? My late mother lost her own mother at age five, and lost her five-year battle with breast cancer in 2007. She inspired all who knew her, and helped shape my decision to give back to Cobb County by seeking to serve publicly. PLEASE LIST THREE ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE YOU AS A PERSON: Honest, sincere, creative.

IF YES, PLEASE LIST OFFICE AND YEAR(S): No PLEASE DESCRIBE THIS OFFICE’S DUTIES & ITS IMPACT ON EAST COBB. To make Cobb County the best place to live and work through efficient, effective and responsive government that delivers quality services. Cobb County operates under the commission-county manager form of government. This system combines the policy leadership of elected officials with the administrative abilities of a county manager. Please describe the training and experience that qualify you for this office. I have worked at IBM and responsible for working with the larger IT organizations in North and South America. I have been in business for myself for 20 years. I am the proprietor of an IT management consulting company. I have managed revenues and expenses in good times and bad. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FACING YOUR POLITICAL OFFICE, AND, IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT? The biggest issue facing the county for the next couple of years is the budget. The county’s primary responsibility to the taxpayers is public safety and infrastructure. After that we need to look at the budget available and allocate the revenue accordingly. “One of the primary goals of Aloha To Aging is to meet the growing need for family caregiver education. We offer classes and workshops, along with a monthly caregiver and bereavement support groups. The education also includes understanding the need for their loved ones to experience social stimulation outside of their family. Our Aloha Day Club for those 55 and older provides this opportunity through our trained and nurturing volunteers who come to share and enjoy the day with the Aloha Day Club members, while allowing the family caregivers a much needed break,” Reed explains. The Aloha Day Club incorporates exercises, music and stimulating activities and discussions in each three-and-a-half hour session. The program also includes a morning snack and lunch.
