East Cobb Dads Develop Media Time Management Scheduling System into a major household battle,” said Putnam. “The Mikko Que is a solution for parents who wish to teach their children how to manage time wisely and get them away from a screen.”

ss Joe Paonessa and Michael Putnam

While scheduling time allotments, parents not only determine how much time is spent on each device but they also set rules for the time of day each child has access. Waking up to find children watching TV at midnight, for example, is no longer an issue for parents using the Que, thanks to these pre-set capabilities. “I once discovered my young son pulling an all-nighter trying to beat the next level in his video game,” said Paonessa. “Video game addiction is a growing problem in our society. It leads to issues of obesity in children and can negatively affect their health.

Mikko USA, an electronics company specializing in home media time management systems, announced the launch of the Mikko Que. The device, similar to a cable box, manages the amount of time children can watch television, use the internet or play video games.

Paonessa and Putnam, in an effort to show support for schools with dwindling budgets, are offering the Que as a passive turn-key fundraising tool for parent associations. Once a school is registered, parents can order online, and a portion of sales are donated back to the school.

The Mikko Que cables easily connect and lock to a variety of supported media systems. Parents set media access time on a USB device for each member of the family. If a child tries to watch at an unauthorized time, the Que safely blocks the signal to a television, computer or video game console, producing a black screen and no sound.

The Mikko USA team introduced the Que at the National PTA Convention in Memphis, TN, June 10-12. For more information about Mikko USA, media addiction and the Que, visit www.MikkoUSA.com.

Mikko USA was founded in 2005 by two fathers, Joe Paonessa and Michael Putnam, both East Cobb residents, who experienced difficulty when trying to get their kids to turn off the television and play outside. “It got to the point where turning off the TV, computer or a video game turned

SAT Stats: East Cobb High Schools The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) are offered by The College Board several times during the year. These tests are not required by the state or school system, and are not administered by Cobb schools; however, most colleges and universities use SAT and/or ACT scores in determining student admission. The SAT is used to predict a student’s potential for success in the first year of college and is required for admission to most colleges and universities. Most college-bound students take one or both of these tests during either their junior or senior year. The following chart displays SAT scores from the Class of 2009 (the last available scores released from Cobb County School District) attending East Cobb high schools. Let’s Re-Do Lunch By Natalie Rogers

On any given day around lunch hour in 2010, the average American, at any age, is consuming processed “food” that is made mostly of chemicals. If you know the negative effects these additives, fillers, colorings, sweeteners, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and preservatives have on your body and mind, even at the cellular level, you wouldn’t feed this “food” to your beloved family pet, much less your own child. Concerned about the health and future of their families, folks in several school districts have completely overhauled their pantries at home and are now banding together to bring this issue to the attention of school boards, superintendents and principals. Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution”, a prime time television show that aired this past Spring, raised even more public awareness about how poorly we are feeding our children at school and at home. West Virginia (where Chef Oliver’s program was filmed) has the highest obesity rate in the country. Georgia is #3 in the nation on the same list. But in addition to the devastating childhood obesity, diabetes and heart disease epidemics resulting from what our kids are being fed, consider the negative effects the chemicals in this processed food and “treat food” have on brain function and student behavior! That alone should be cause for action. Our “school food system” has become a “fast food look-alike contest” that supports government subsidy programs and food lobbies more than it protects child health. And while USDA dietary guidelines for school meals continue to lag behind modern medical science’s knowledge of what constitutes healthy food for children, there is still

a LOT that can be done to improve YOUR SCHOOL’S food “landscape” RIGHT NOW. You can ask your school’s principal, café manager and Cobb County School District’s Food and Nutrition Services to replace high fat, high sodium, artificially colored, partially hydrogenated and high fructose corn syrup-laden a la carte fare with healthier options such as yogurt, fresh fruit, trail mix, soy milk, salad bars, etc. Schools can retain a la carte revenue and at the same time protect student health. You can ensure that every student brain in your child’s class is “ready to learn” every day by NOT sending to school candy, doughnuts, ice cream and cakes. If you must send food to school, opt for fruits, veggies and whole grains. Our teachers deserve to have students who can focus, concentrate and learn every day (NOT just during CRCT testing). There is no better way to deliberately sabotage our teachers’ efforts to educate than to offer students food items that inhibit brain function and cause behavioral disturbances. You can get involved in Cobb County School District’s Farm to School initiative by starting a school garden program at your school, by volunteering to help facilitate your school cafeteria’s “produce of the month” program and by attending CCSD Farm to School initiative meetings to let your voice be heard as a stakeholder in the health and lives of Cobb’s youngest citizens. Do not be afraid to speak up!! There are wonderful school food improvements being made in districts all over our state right now, because concerned parents and grandparents are demanding better food for their children. Together, we can “re-do lunch” in Cobb and change the course of our children’s lives for the better. For more information about how YOU can improve your school food environment, contact Natalie Rogers at fluffyjune@yahoo.com.

School Board Approves 2011 Budget Reductions, Other Steps Taken To Address $126.7 Million Shortfall The Cobb County Board of Education approved a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2011 that required numerous difficult steps to address a $126.7 million shortfall. The budget gap resulted from a significant drop in the school district’s two primary sources of revenue – state funding and local property tax collections. Since 2003, the state of Georgia has implemented austerity cuts that have reduced funding for Cobb County schools by more than $208 million. Additionally, local property tax collections in 2010 decreased by approximately 10 percent.

Earlier this year, the Georgia Department of Education waived all restrictions on class size to help school districts across the state contend with the economic crisis. In Cobb, where class sizes already were well below the state maximum at every grade level, schools can expect to see classes increase on average by approximately three students. That number is averaged, so some classes may be higher and others lower. As an example, core classes in high school can expect to see class sizes of no more than 35 students.

The spending cuts and other steps taken to address the $126.7 million shortfall follow a budget year in 2010 that itself required more than $97 million in cuts, including a 2-percent pay reduction for all employees. The balanced budget presented by Superintendent Fred Sanderson and approved by the Board of Education at its June 9, 2010, work session attempts to sustain the highest level of educational service possible under the challenging economic circumstances.

Reductions in state and local revenue are the primary causes of the budget gap, but there are other factors that impact the school district’s operating budget. Cobb County tax exemptions are among the most generous in the State of Georgia. Two of the most popular exemptions are the Age 62 Exemption and the Homestead Exemption. Cobb County qualified homeowners who are age 62 or older as of January 1 are fully exempt from school property tax. Qualified homeowners are entitled to a $10,000 Homestead Exemption in the school general tax category. In total, Cobb County tax exemptions will reduce school district revenue by more than $100 million.

The FY2011 General Fund budget anticipates $819,380,347 in revenue compared to $907,469,792 in budgeted revenue for FY2010. The FY2011 budget anticipates $819,376,569 in expenditures compared to $907,466,771 in budgeted expenditures in FY2010. The budget is based on a predicted enrollment of 105,205 students. Expenditures per student total $7,788 compared to $8,648 per student in FY2010. The approved budget results will not increase the school property tax rate. Increasing class sizes creates the greatest budget cost-savings – as class sizes increase the district needs fewer teachers.

The approved FY2011 budget also includes more than $8.7 million in federal funding from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Those dollars no longer will be available after next school year. Details of the FY2010 Cobb County School District budget, as well as video presentations from its development, are available online at http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice/finance/ budget.htm.

East Cobb Baseball Leads Local Athletes to National Success By Keren Goldshlager

Each summer, East Cobbers flock to Turner Field to watch the beloved Braves and enjoy the all-American sport of baseball. As they cheer for their favorite players, many East Cobbers do not realize that some of these very same players started right here in our own backyard. For the past 25 years, East Cobb Baseball has been training the area’s most promising young baseball athletes and leading them to success in both college and pro baseball on a state-of-the-art, 30-acre baseball complex with eight perfectly manicured ballfields in Northeast Cobb County. East Cobb Baseball was founded in 1985, when Guerry Baldwin, now the president of the organization, brought together a team of top players that had previously been organized solely by age or location. Mr. Baldwin decided kids should play at the level of their ability—better players should play with and against other better players. Since then, East Cobb Baseball [ECB] has grown to include 85 teams for players ages eight to eighteen. Altogether, the program has produced 150 professional players. Twenty-one of these pro players were drafted by the Atlanta Braves, including Jason Heyward, the Braves’ newest baseball marvel. Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur, and Mike Hostetler are just a few of the other Braves players who got their start at East Cobb Baseball. The Atlanta Braves have a special connection with ECB because its national head of scouting, Roy Clark, calls East Cobb his home. Beyond the realm of Atlanta, ECB alumni also play on 31 different pro teams, including the Red Sox, the Yankees, and the Phillies. A Sports Illustrated article (published April 19, 2010, Legend Before His Time) notes the following about Atlanta Braves rookie and ECB alum, Jason Heyward: “What Silicon Valley is to computer chips, East Cobb is to youth baseball: the heart of the sport’s research and development. . .The East Cobb program has become a magnet for not only the best players in Georgia but also others from the Southeast (and occasionally farther) who would stay with local host families or in the host house on the grounds of the complex. Since 1985 East Cobb has won 146 national titles and produced 150 pro players, including 21 drafted and signed last year alone. . . .You might see as many as 600 scouts and

20 August 2010

college coaches at the complex at a time; they’re engaged in the baseball equivalent of catching fish in a barrel.” In 2009 alone, ECB won an impressive number of titles including USSSA Global World Series Champions and AABC Mickey Mantle World Series Champions. ECB past players have also been represented on the US Olympic Team by outfielder Dexter Fowler. So what makes East Cobb Baseball so unique and so successful? ECB ensures that their program includes the best coaches and that their players compete against the most skillful teams. Instead of teaching fathers to coach like many recreational teams do, ECB’s coaches are often former college coaches or former minor league players. Because of this, East Cobb Baseball parents have been able to watch their children truly flourish. Brad Hanner, an East Cobb resident who is the manager of his son’s 15U team, the Athletics, affirms that ECB coaches are “really doing it because they have a love of baseball and a love of quality baseball.” Furthermore, unlike school-affiliated teams, ECB has the luxury of bringing together the best players from multiple local schools such as Walton, Lassiter, Wheeler, Pope, and Kell. “Carrying the ECB logo will always give you the credibility that someone knows that you can play ball,” Hanner states proudly. “Everyone in the whole Southeast knows about East Cobb Baseball.” This prestige helps pit ECB teams against the best competition possible. Upon entering a tournament, players can expect to be facing their opposition’s best pitchers and overall best game. All East Cobb Baseball teams travel throughout the southeast, participating in tournaments in Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee. As Guerry Baldwin explains, “[ECB] seeks out challenges that will allow their players to grow . . . we have kids that want to play baseball, that really love the game.” Upcoming events on East Cobb Baseball’s calendar include tryouts on August 7 for 8-13 year olds and on August 14 for 14-18 year olds. A Perfect Game Scouting Showcase will be held at the facility on August 21. In September, ECB will host the PG Qualifiers and Triple Crown tournaments. For more information, go to www.eastcobbbaseball.com or visit ECB’s facility on Lee Waters Road in Marietta.

When you walk in Home Grown Living you are surrounded by so many beautiful objects, it’s easy to get distracted. However, despite the quantity of items, the place is decorated in such a way that it’s easy to move around and look at your leisure. The store specializes in interior and exterior home décor items, including lamps, tables, silver bowls, wooden horses, large wall clocks and everything in between. The owners Wilhelmus Baneveld and Justin Pfaff focus on purchasing antiques and antique reproductions from all over the world and making them available to homeowners. For many years, they focused on the wholesale market, but opened this store in November to cater to the professional and everyday home designer. The store is located in a cozy house in historic Roswell with beautiful wood floors and lots of rooms featuring items at all price levels. Merchandise is always revolving because they have a separate 4,000 sq. foot warehouse that houses their many antiques. Home Grown Living also provides full-service landscape design and implementation services. Their exterior merchandise includes waterfalls, patios, statues, plantings and specialty greenhouses, a unique offering that is popular today. Originally from The Netherlands, Wilhelmus has traveled the world selling antiques, but has been working with Justin for the past four years in Georgia. Wilhelmus’ daughter, Liza Smith, is the stylist for the store and provides interior decorating services as well. When you walk around the store, be sure to ask about the history of the items for sale. Many of them have a unique European story that adds to their character and value. Home Grown Living is located at 96 Bulloch Street, Roswell, Ga. Parking is at the front entrance located on Marietta Highway, next to Relish Restaurant in Roswell. Local Writers Publish Patriotic Book

ssLynn Pugh

The newest book from the Christian Authors Guild (CAG) is a collection of patriotic essays written by local authors. Since its release last May, over 600 copies have been sold at local book signings, entertaining readings, and panel discussions. This is the fifth book published by this writers group of approximately 80 members. The Christian Authors Guild celebrates their 10-year anniversary this year.

East Cobb resident, Lynn Pugh, worked closely with the members of the Christian Authors Guild as she compiled this anthology. “On the day I accepted this assignment, I inherently knew this was not just a book to be printed, but rather a timely message to share with others—one of significance that would impact lives. The gifts these authors exhibit by writing together for something other than an individual project is impressive. It’s what this book is about—the preservation of America through the unity of her people. The Christian Authors Guild invites writers from beginners to highly published, to come to a meeting. The group meets the first and third Monday of each month at Prayer and Praise Christian Fellowship, 6409 Bells Ferry Road, Woodstock, GA 30189.

In America Remembered, hidden treasures await your discovery. Thirty-three writers bring stories to life in this inspirational tribute to our country. Sail back to the early 1600s, meet natives and immigrants, and delight in the variety of humorous memories of growing up in America. Enjoy reading about the unity of neighbors during times of celebration and national disasters. With tales from times long ago to current events, this page-turner is filled with inspirational stories of our heartland, our heritage, and our hope for the future.

Their annual Catch the Wave Christian Writer’s Conference is September 10–11 at the Piedmont Church Conference Center, 570 Piedmont Road, Marietta, GA 30066. For more information visit www. ChristianAuthorsGuild.org or contact Lynn Pugh at 404-867-2428.

East Cobb Rotary Club Continues Annual Dog Days Run On Saturday, August 14th, the East Cobb Rotary Club will hold its Dog Days 5K Run to raise money for various East Cobb charities. The race, which is in its fifth year now, has become one of the more popular races in East Cobb, and this year’s race promises to bring in even more runners.

Since the race is, indeed, in the middle of the Dog Days of August, the start time for the 5K is 7am to ensure that runners are done well before the heat of the day begins. In addition to the 5K race, there will also be a 1-mile Fun Run which begins at 7:45am, as well as a Tot Trot that begins at 8am, so the race will definitely be a family-friendly event.

A few things have changed and will be new to the Dog Days 5K this year. The race course has been altered and will now be similar to the Polar Bear Run 5K course, which starts and ends at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in East Cobb. Also new this year, the Dog Days Run logo has a fresh new look. This new logo will be featured on the blue technical tees that all of the race participants will receive.

Early race registration, which will run through August 7, is only $20. Runners and walkers can register for the race at www.active.com, or in person at Fleet Feet Sports Atlanta in Sandy Springs. When runners register at Fleet Feet Sports, they can receive their race number when they turn in their registration form. There will also be $25 race day registration, which will start at 6:15am the morning of the race.

The various charities that will benefit from this year’s Dog Days 5K Run include WellStar Community Hospice, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the Brain Tumor Foundation, Camp Kudzu for Juvenile Diabetes, Camp Hope, Canine Assistance, the Boy Scouts of America and many others.

Cobb County Animal Advocates Want No-Kill Shelters By Maddie Russo This year, some five million dogs and cats will be killed in shelters throughout the United States. Last year, over 6,000 animals were killed in Cobb County alone.

CCAA was part of a grass roots effort to pass Grace’s Law--Georgia State House Bill 788-- which was recently passed and signed by Governor Sonny Perdue. The bill bans the use of gas chambers to kill homeless animals and will take effect December 30, 2010. Grace’s Law bans this method of killing animals, but does not ban the killing itself. Instead, animals will be killed in a more humane way through euthanasia by injection.

This past April, Cobb County Animal Advocates (CCAA) joined together to create a safer place for homeless animals in Cobb County. Since its creation, CCAA is making Cobb citizens more aware of the conditions homeless animals have been suffering. Their primary mission is to engage Cobb County Animal Control and leaders within Cobb County government to make improvements in the county’s policies and operations regarding the animals in its care.

In 2009, Cobb County Animal Control impounded 7,928 dogs and 6,203 cats. Around 5,000 were adopted or rescued. Cobb County Animal Advocates would like to work with Cobb County Animal Control in designing a volunteer program that will save more lives, improve the quality of life and help make animals more adoptable to the public. CCAA is also offering to work in partnership with Cobb County Animal Control to improve its adoption programs.

“Our main goal is to turn Cobb County Animal Control into a no-kill shelter,” says one founder of the organization, Allison Greenwald. No-Kill advocates ultimately seek an end to the killing of homeless animals by ensuring public access to affordable spay/neuter services, allowing rescue groups to save animals on death row, and communitywide Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) for feral cats. No-Kill advocates want to eliminate population control killing and believe that feral cats have a right to live.

If you are interested in becoming a part of Cobb County Animal Advocates, send an e-mail to info@cobbanimals.com. For more info visit: www.cobbanimals.com. This website features CCAA’s “Action Plan” which assesses the environment and current policies at Cobb County’s animal shelter.

Local Church Creates Garden for Community By Brittany Hall

The garden produce is given to Center for Family Resources to be dispersed to those who are in need. The pastor, Rev. Byron Wells, has noticed a positive impact on his church body. “It is really great to see the positive energy that has risen through this project,” Wells said. “Their vision for it is amazing.” The benefit of working together in nature is not just for the avid gardener or able bodied worker. Abernathy said it focuses on community building in their church and throughout East Cobb. “It is great for people who can’t be very active but want to help the community,” Abernathy said. “We have several members who have a lot of knowledge about gardening that has helped us get started.” For more information about Chestnut Ridge Christian Church’s community garden located at 2663 Johnson Ferry Road, readers can visit the church’s website: chestnutridgechristianchurch.com.

Tune In This Fall To 1160 AM To Catch All the Action

In the summer heat, you might find any one of Chestnut Ridge’s church members like East Cobber Debbie Abernathy giving thirsty plants a refreshing shower. The next day, you might see senior pastor Rev. Byron Wells among the squash and peas. Chestnut Ridge Christian Church has taken the community garden to mean just that – by the community and for the community. The garden began last year when the back lot of the church property became vacant. This provided an expanse of land with no given purpose. Church members – including both green thumbs and novice gardeners– built raised beds to grow a variety of squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and other vegetables. “It was rough at first,” Abernathy admits. “But now it is flourishing. This summer we just gave 50 pounds of produce.” The community-based garden has many hands involved. From Sunday school classes, to children, to church visitors, the garden is well looked after. Without the use of pesticides, the organic garden takes a lot of work. “We try to have one work day a week, for about an hour,” Abernathy said. “We have watering schedules that involve a range of volunteers from children to older members.” “It is a great way to help the community by providing fresh produce, with the added benefit of fellowship,” said Debbie Abernathy, church member and garden organizer. 36 August 2010

Modern Day Masala: Indian Cooking for the Modern Day Mom By Keren Goldshlager

Sharma first discovered her love of Indian food on a trip to visit her husband’s parents who live in India. She learned about Indian cooking from her mother-in-law and used her newfound knowledge to begin teaching Indian cooking classes upon returning home. She started pre-bagging spices to save class time, and when one of her students mentioned that they’d love to purchase the pre-made spice blends, the seed for Modern Day Masala was planted. Modern Day Masala products are sold with recipes and can be mixed with just a few fresh ingredients to create meals that can be cooked in about 30 minutes. ssKristin Harsh-Sharma

East Cobber Kristin Harsh-Sharma is making the art of Indian cooking easy (and tasty!) for aspiring chefs and busy moms. In 2007, Kristin Sharma started her business, Modern Day Masala, in her own kitchen, and now it’s a successful packaged spice company with a production facility in East Cobb County. “Masala” means “spice” in Indian, and Sharma’s business, Modern Day Masala, produces six signature spice blends that bring the complex flavors of Indian cuisine to consumers.

www.eastcobber.com

Now, Modern Day Masala sells its six signature products in 11 states. In addition, the company just got approval to sell its blends at Whole Foods Grocery Stores throughout the Southeast. “It’s kind of fun to have our facility right here, so close to home,” says Sharma with a smile. “I grew up in East Cobb… and my parents still live in my childhood home, so it’s really fun now for me to see that come full circle. We’re back in the East Cobb schools, my business is here, and we employ people in the area. Everything is local.” To learn more about Modern Day Masala and to view a full listing of all six delicious spice blends, visit the website at moderndaymasala.com.

East Cobb Women Are Iron Girls and this year ran in the event to celebrate exercise as a privilege and not a chore.

ssLee Ann Wynn preparing for the race.

The idea of waking up before sunrise to swim a third of a mile, bike 18 miles and then run a 5K might not be everybody’s way to spend a Sunday morning. But for local East Cobb residents, Lee Ann Wynn and Mishael Porembski, there is no better way to spend the day. Wynn and Porembski were just two of nearly 1,300 women who participated in the Aflac Iron Girl Triathlon at Lake Lanier on Sunday, June 27. The event was for women of all ages, shapes, and athletic abilities – and each participant had their own reason for racing that day. For Wynn, a cancer diagnosis on her birthday last year was hardly the best news, but she was determined for it to be only a minor setback in her plans. After having to drop out of the 2009 Aflac Iron Girl event, she underwent treatment,

Overcoming life challenges was also motivation for Porembski. After the sudden loss of her husband while seven months pregnant and the passing of her mother to cancer shortly after that, she pushed herself to become an Aflac Iron Girl. Determined to not let the hardships in her life define her, she started training for the Aflac Iron Girl as a way to work through her grief. This year, as she ssMishael Porembski at the race crossed the finish line for a second time, her daughters helped celebrate her strength. The Aflac Iron Girl Event Series encourages women to lead healthy and balanced lives. Stories like those of Wynn and Porembski shine the light on why Aflac, a voluntary insurance company, sponsors this event. For many participants, success is not just finishing the race but having the courage to start, and take a step towards a healthier life. To learn how to take your first step to becoming a triathlete, visit www.aflacirongirl.com.

It’s also a good time to cast some very important votes for change. This will most certainly improve the quality of your business and life in more ways than you can imagine, regardless of who wins the political vote. FIRST: Your first vote should be for your most important number one candidate – YOU! This is a vote for your authentic self, the real you to show up more in your business and personal life. We all are pulled in many different directions trying to be and do for everyone else. We tend to forget who we are. Your authentic self is the very best.

In addition to Secunda’s vast cosmetic expertise, she is one of only a select few practitioners in Georgia certified in breast areola restoration. This procedure involves complete color restoration following reconstructive surgery and is primarily used by breast cancer patients who have undergone a mastectomy. “I am so thankful to be able to touch so many lives with this gift to make women feel complete and whole again,” said Secunda. Thanks to her vast experience and an impressive list of credentials, Secunda’s clients know they are in good hands when they step into her Johnson Ferry Road office. It’s time to cast your vote so you can make a difference in your world. There are a lot of changes going on in our country. Whether you agree or disagree with the politics and policies, this is your chance to vote for what you wish.

SECOND: Your second vote should open you up to see and feel the fun, joy, excitement and humor that come from your business and personal life. There is a warning if you open up too much: You may wet yourself. THIRD: Your third vote should be for the appreciation and accomplishments of all the wonderful people, things and events in your life – including yourself. The way you cast these votes is by having a STRONG INTENTION and FEELING about the outcome. The more of this you apply, the more the votes will be counting in your favor. When you do this, it will put you in the energy vortex. When you’re in the vortex, all the things you want are possible without struggle. When you are there, you will have a real inner happiness. Cast your vote NOW! It will make a big difference in your world. To contact Pete with questions or information, phone 770-977-2232. Or visit his website: www.breakingfreecoaching.com

Curtain Call Youth Players Promotes Performing Arts By Maddie Russo

Curtain Call Youth Player’s (CCYP) mission is to enhance the love of live theater in people of all ages. Founded by dedicated parents in 1992, the board-run organization hires professionals to run its programs. Eighteen years later, Curtain Call is still running strong. “With the economy cutting arts programs, we’re happy to provide kids with another outlet that gives them the chance to be part of a production,” Artistic Director Shannon Lindsay says. CCYP does this through two programs. The Players program, open to fifth through twelfth graders, puts on two full-length productions a year and guarantees a part to every child who signs up. This ensures that each child has a chance to gain experience through participating in a full-length production. The Troupe program, geared towards seasoned high school students, allows older actors to build their dramatic repotoires. CCYP also offers a variety of fun summer camps. This season, CCYP will provide actors with exciting performance opportunities, allowing them to express their creativity. The Players show is Treasure Island with a bit of a twist: many of the main male roles have been changed to historic

female figures. The program, which consists of two rehearsals a week, is aimed towards younger actors who have an interest in learning the basics of theater. Troup actors participate in a year-long course that teaches them how to perform a diverse spectrum of genres. The program is aimed toward committed high school students with a passion for theater. Students will expand their knowledge through many performance opportunities in larger-scale venues. Interested students must audition for a limited number of spaces and agree to attend rehearsals twice a month from July to August. Curtain Call allows students to participate in something unique and has provided over 600 students with life-long friendships and great memories. “CCYP has given me a sense of community outside of school. I love my fellow actors. We have truly become a family,” says Sprayberry High senior Alyssa Wright who has performed in eight CCYP shows. Curtain Call Youth Players is a special community that nurtures talent and helps young actors discover their dreams. For more info visit www.ccyp.org.

Compassionate Friends Help Grieving Families Cope By Rachel Childs ing point comes when you stop viewing your child as dead and begin to take joy in your child’s life,” says Kathy Kelcourse, leader of the Marietta chapter. Kathy says that after her daughter’s suicide, what kept her going was knowing that she could use her pain to help others. The Compassionate Friends (TCF), is a support group run by and for parents, grandparents, and siblings grieving the loss of a child at any age. The Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self help support organization that offers friendship and understanding to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings. There is no religious affiliation and there are no membership dues or fees. The story of The Compassionate Friends is one of loss, but also of the love, caring, and sharing that have emerged from those committed to the idea that We Need Not Walk Alone. Over its four decades of existence, TCF has supported hundreds of thousands of families in dealing with the natural grieving process following the death of a child. Today, with more than 600 chapters in the United States and a presence in at least 30 countries, TCF has emerged as the world’s largest self-help bereavement organization.

Meetings open with a circle of chairs allowing each person to introduce themselves and share their story. The large group, with attendance averaging 50, is then broken up into smaller, more specified groups (i.e. for loss of an infant, loss by vehicular homicide, etc.) led by facilitators like Kelcourse and program director, Ria Coesel. It is always hard to “welcome” newcomers contacting Compassionate Friends or coming to the meetings for the first time. However, they are glad when first time visitors find the courage to reach out for help. The Compassionate Friends of Cobb County meet the first Tuesday of every month at First Baptist Church of Marietta, 148 Church Street in Marietta, from 7 to 9:30 PM. Other groups meet in Sandy Springs and Douglasville. For more information on The Compassionate Friends, call 404-538-4287, or visit their website at www.tcfmarietta.org.

Since 1986, the Marietta chapter of The Compassionate Friends has been providing an environment in which bereaved family members can gain hope and understanding. “The turn-
