PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover

December is a month to celebrate miracles—Hanukkah and Christmas. Though this holiday season is one of the most magical times of the year for children, many of us often find the season to be stressful. I hope by reading this issue of the EAST COBBER you are giving yourself a break from the holiday rush. You can get some gift-giving ideas on pages 12-17 in our annual gift guide. The merchants featured are in our own backyard so that should make your shopping a little easier. Please check them out, you’ll be inspired by the gift selections they offer. As always, this issue includes stories about the good people that share their “gifts,” making East Cobb a better place to live. From PTA Presidents, Irene Barton and Abby Shiffman, pictured on our front cover, to Jim Rhoden, recognized as East Cobb’s Citizen of the Year for all of his contributions to the business community and civic efforts too numerous to list (see page 7), to the “Terrific Teens” on page 10. I hope you, EAST COBBER reader, are inspired by their “gift”-giving and may be encouraged to share your gift to create a better East Cobb. And if you already are contributing to the quality of life here in East Cobb, let me share your story! Just give me call or e-mail the EAST COBBER. For me, the best presents I’ll receive this holiday season can’t be wrapped--my three healthy children and my (very tolerant) husband of 23 years. Another favorite present is the joy of being able to work on this paper every month for such a great community. It’s a gift I’m grateful for, not just during this holiday season but every day.

As co-presidents of the Eastern Cobb County Council (ECCC) of PTAs, Abby Shiffman and Irene Barton lead 35 East Cobb PTAs to find ways to improve the academic lives of East Cobb children. As Ms. Shiffman explains, “Each PTA offers so many good programs that enriches children’s lives and helps guide parents to find productive ways to get involved in the school.” Despite holding down “real” jobs—Abby is a physical therapist and Irene is an office manager--their leadership positions require them to

Irene lives in the Indian Hills subdivision with her husband, Steve; daughter, Casey, a fifth-grader; and her son, Alex, a secondgrader. Both children attend East Side Elementary School. Cobb Christmas Keeps Holiday Spirit Alive By: Marianne McGoldrick Founded in 1963, Cobb Christmas, Inc. is Cobb County’s largest and oldest holiday assistance program. Their vision: to make the Christmas season a little brighter by providing toys to low-income families living in Cobb County. Last year the organization collected enough toys to provide for approximately 1,450 families, including 4,000 children. Board members predict the same numbers for this holiday season. So how does this incredible local organization manage to collect enough toys to provide for thousands of children? Each year Cobb Christmas, Inc. holds a Stuff-A-Bus fundraiser. “Stuff-A-Bus is a partnership with CCT (Cobb County Transit),” says Melanie Duncan, VP of Toys for Cobb Christmas, Inc. Board of Directors. “We partner each year with CCT to have Stuff-A-Bus stops in large companies, public schools and universities across the county.” CCT buses are used to transport toys from Stuff-A-Bus stops to the Cobb Christmas, Inc. warehouse at Jim Miller Park in Marietta, Ga. This year, Stuff-A-Bus stop collections will take place for five days starting Monday, December 6. Distribution of the toys will take place from Friday, December 17 to Sunday, December 19. The evening before toy distribution, Thursday, December 16, Cobb Christmas, Inc. will host their annual fundraiser, The Night Before Cobb Christmas. The event will take place at the Cobb Christmas, Inc. Warehouse at Jim Miller Park. The evening will consist of a casual dinner, silent auction, entertainment and a personal tour of the distribution site. “The great thing about The Night Before Christmas is that we get to show our supporters what the warehouse looks like when it’s full,” says Paul Prater, Volunteer Coordinator for Cobb Christmas, Inc. “It helps them understand exactly how many children we help each year. Cobb Christmas, Inc. could not serve the community so well without the support of its dedicated volunteers. “Everyone who works with Cobb Christmas is a volunteer,” says Prater. “There is not a paid staff. Everything that gets done is done by a volunteer working on their time. They do it because they love it, not because of the money they make.” “I could not work with a better group of humble, dedicated and committed people who share the same vision and have the same common goals in mind,” says Myranda Flemister, Chair of Cobb Christmas Inc. “We cannot do what we do without the help and support from each other.”

The organization will need approximately 300 volunteers for this year’s toy distribution and set-up. If you would like to volunteer your time or donate to Cobb Christmas, Inc., please visit http://www.cobbchristmas.net. “I volunteer with Cobb Christmas because I believe in giving back to the community. I am driven to help those in need in all areas of life and Cobb Christmas is just one way I can help make a difference,” says Duncan. “Cobb Christmas is a wonderful organization and I recommend all that are able to make a donation to help us to continue to provide for those in need in our community.” 8 December 2010

Not Your Mother’s PTA PTA…it’s not all bake sales and school carnivals. Times have changed and with it so has PTA. One of the most important factors of today’s PTA is the acknowledgement that parents, families and communities, as well as teachers and administrators, should collaborate and be actively engaged in our children’s education. Our findings are based on over 30 years of research that prove what schools, families and communities can do to improve student achievement despite socioeconomic status, background, race or gender. This research shows that six common traits are needed for successful schools and these are summarized in the “PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships.” These six Standards are: Creating a Welcoming Environment, Communicating Effectively, Supporting Student Success, Speaking Up for Every Child, Sharing Power, and Collaborating with the Community. Significantly, the Cobb County School District and Georgia Department of Education have both recently adopted these standards, which means each school will use them as a framework to improve student achievement. How does PTA implement these National Standards? Through the work of dedicated, energized and motivated volunteers. These parent leaders work collaboratively with administrators and teachers within their schools to plan, underwrite and bring programs and activities which support their school’s goals. Additionally, PTA volunteers often partner with other stakeholders to deliver programs. Our work at the East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) is also focused on these Standards and assisting our 35 member schools with implementation, sharing best practices, answering questions and celebrating successes.

dening events, and math and other curriculum nights. Many PTAs also assist schools by funding teacher supplies, purchasing technology, providing teacher training, parent educational opportunities and more. In these difficult budgetary times, PTA and school foundations are critical in helping to fill the gap in reduced educational funding. One thing has not changed - PTA continues its work as the largest and oldest non-profit children’s advocacy group in the country. We are the voice for millions of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of parent involvement in schools. Even if you do not have children in the public school system, you have a stake in the children who fill the hallways each day. Many local schools are looking for adults to help with one-on-one reading, tutoring, volunteering in the media center, helping with after-school programs and more. You may contact the school closest to your home (either call the front office and ask for the PTA contact or visit the school’s website to gather contact information). You don’t have to be a member of PTA to help. But if you do, you’ll be a member of the oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy association in the United States and contribute to making a difference in the lives of millions of children and families. On Facebook? Join the East Cobb County PTA (ECCC PTA) Family Engagement group to find out what’s happening at schools in East Cobb.

At each school, Cobb County PTAs provide ways for families and the community to be involved by volunteering in classrooms, media centers, front offices, and also by organizing student enrichment programs such as science and writing clubs, arts programs, cultural days, healthy nutrition and gar-

Last month, Pope High School held a “Pink Out” at its football game. This “Pink Out,” aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer, was produced and promoted by Pope High School senior Keegan LaVelle. After witnessing his neighbors and aunt struggle with breast cancer, Keegan LaVelle started a nonprofit MammoMe about a year ago. 100% of the money raised goes to pay for mammograms for uninsured and financially challenged women. Through individual and group efforts Keegan has been able to raise money to fund MammoMe. As Keegan explains, “I held garage sales, sold “Screen a Breast Save a Life” t-shirts and Pink Ribbon Silly Bands, asked for personal donations and raised money at teen sporting events.” Through his website, www.MammoMe.com, Keegan reviews the on-line electronic breast screening forms. He then contacts the woman who has requested a mammogram. If the applicant does not have insurance or the resources to pay for her mammogram, then MammoMe will pay 100% of her mammogram. “The long term goal for MammoMe is to receive enough support where we can create awareness so individuals and corporations donate to keep funding mammograms for any woman in need,” says Keegan. Fourth generation jeweler, Joseph Meadows of David Douglas Diamonds & Jewelry of East Cobb was awarded the “Best Render” 1st Place at the Gemvision Design Symposium which took place October 2-4, in Schaumburg, Illinois. Nearly 300 participants were on hand representing 16 countries worldwide and 38 US states. This unique jewelry design and technology event featured a design contest. Only 19-years-old, Joseph competed against seasoned professionals. Joseph started engraving and designing jewelry using computer-aided design (CAD) when he was just 13. This is his second year of entering the contest. He currently works as an engraver and CAD jewelry designer at David Douglas Diamonds & Jewelry, which is owned by Joseph’s father, Doug Meadows. The Meadows family has been in the jewelry business for more than 75 years, beginning with Arthur Meadows, Joseph’s great-grandfather.

How do you help students learn to think in a world of instant information? That question has been transformed into our educational philosophy. Rather than simply surf the Internet for answers that others have thought through, we are teaching students how to decode information in order to discover relevant, trustworthy answers. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s educational approach empowers students with the critical thinking skills they need to succeed. All Academy students are trained in Latin beginning in 3rd grade and continuing into Middle School. Latin enables students to decode root words thus transforming their vocabulary. Latin gives students the upper hand when looking at new or complex words, as they are able to break down words based on their original purpose. As students progress to Middle School, they are versed in Logic so that they are able to defend their stance on any issue with fact rather than emotions and are able to detect fallacies in information. “Learning how to think and how to convey what they think is absolutely critical to students success in today’s world,” says Dr. Bob Burris, Head of School. “After all, students today will hold many different jobs throughout their professional lives, and in all likelihood a majority of the jobs they hold do not even exist at present. Our educational approach gives them the tools necessary to think so that they may acquire the skills they need to be successful.”

Squeeze out as much moisture as possible from zucchini and combine with remaining ingredients except oil. In a large frying pan over medium-high heat, heat about 1/3 cup oil until hot. Drop 3 tablespoons zucchini mixture into pan to form each pancake. Fry until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels and keep warm in 250° oven. Serve with sour cream or applesauce. Makes about 16 pancakes.

A Double Feature: Celebrating the Birthdays of Earl Smith and The Strand This January marks a very special double feature event for The Strand. “We have the opportunity to celebrate two legends: the two-year birthday of the reopening of the Earl Smith Strand Theatre and the 80th birthday of the theatre’s namesake, Earl Smith,” said Strand Executive Director Earl Reece. The Strand Theater opened its doors in 1935, providing movie entertainment to thousands until it closed its doors as a movie house in 1976. After serving as a variety of venues, a “FOR RENT” sign was placed in the box office window of the aged movie house.

Earl Smith saw the weathered and time-ravaged Strand and envisioned her classic beauty restored at the center of a thriving community. With the assistance of many other volunteers, he organized the nonprofit Friends of The Strand, Inc. and steered the six-year fundraising effort to bring life back to the heart of Marietta.

“Earl Smith has accomplished a great deal of things in his life. One of his great achievements was spearheading the initiative to reopen The Strand Theatre on the Marietta Square,” Reece said. “Through Earl’s hard work and determination, The Strand has become a diamond on the Square.”

silvafm@silvapiano.com

On Saturday, January 8, 2011, the community will gather to applaud two years of the theatre’s renewed life and 80 unequaled years of Earl Smith, while raising funds to keep The Strand alive and well. Guests will enjoy a black-tie evening of live stage entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, a birthday toast, and a silent auction benefitting The Strand. Tickets will be on sale at The Strand’s box office on Nov. 1 and are $60 per person. The historic Earl Smith Strand Theatre is a multi-use performing arts and events facility. The theatre is governed by the Friends of The Strand, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and depends on the financial support of private and corporate donors. It is The Strand’s mission to serve the community with cultural entertainment for a diverse audience and to promote economic health in the City of Marietta and Cobb County. For more information or tickets, visit www.EarlSmithStrand.org or the Box Office at 770-293-0080 or 117 North Park Square, Marietta, 30060. Don’t you just love those days you experience, where everything you touch, people you deal with, challenges and situations that don’t go as planned, yet you’re so happy that you’re ‘busting out’ at the seams? You’re feeling good, energized and at the end of the day you’re not wiped out. Do you remember having those kinds of days? Do they seem to be happening less and less? Would you like to feel like that every ss Pete Allen day? Well, that’s a big order, but it can be done. It’s going to require a few changes in your perception and habits. If you’re willing . . . read on. Do you agree that the world is changing? We have more conveniences, more technology, more people, more traffic, and more work and life pressures. The more complicated our world becomes, the more chances there are for upset and havoc in our lives. These things can cause us frustration, anger, resentment… and stress. These are all damaging to our total health and wellbeing. You’ve heard the saying, “Life was much simpler in years past.” So understand the complexity of our world today. In doing so, you will recognize that in order to make each day as wonderful as possible, our thinking must change. One of the benefits will result in protecting the most valuable asset you have: YOU – your health and wellbeing. There are hundreds of things throughout the day that can cause upset, such as: You go out to your car and the tire is flat; on your way to work you’re caught in a traffic jam; you have a computer problem that you think should only take a few minutes to resolve and you end up talking to someone in another country for over an hour; etc.

Making EACH and EVERY Day WONDERFUL

When things like this happen, be aware. Know that in this complex world, all these events are part of your journey. Then as you bump up against the people, events, and situations that would normally cause you upset, aggravation, frustration and anger, you have a choice to diffuse those negative emotions and you should do so as soon as possible. Example: When you’re in a traffic jam or any other situation, ask, “Can I do anything about it now?” If not, realize that it’s part of your journey today and discharge those upsetting emotions and get back to that ‘feeling good’ state. Here are some suggestions to prepare you to create each day as wonderfully as possible: • Start each day by being grateful for specific things in your life. • Set an intention on how you want your day to go. And how you want to feel. • Be aware and know that all the day’s events are part of your journey and you have choices about how you want to live. This is being proactive not reactive. To find out more on how to do this contact me, Pete, at my website: www.breakingfreecoaching.com or phone 770-977-2232. Best wishes to all through the Holidays and Beyond!

New Podiatric Practice Offers Relief for Foot and Ankle Pain Area residents with foot and ankle pain have another choice in treatment options thanks to the opening of the Podiatry Group of Georgia’s new East Cobb practice. Located at the intersection of Johnson Ferry Road and Mulberry and headed by Dr. Tammy Gephart, the practice specializes in the prevention, care and cure of all foot and ankle problems. Dr. Gephart is experienced in general and surgical podiatry, pediatrics, orthotics and diabetic limb salvage. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPA) in Independence, Ohio. Dr. Gephart completed her residency in podiatric surgery at the Northport VA Medical Center in Long Island, New York. During her residency, Dr. Gephart studied with Dr. John Burzotta, foot and ankle specialist for the New York Jets. A former amateur elite athlete and avid long distance runner, Dr. Gephart has a special interest in sports-related injuries and helping athletes return to their chosen sport.

ssDr. Tammy Gephart

Dr. Gephart says that she prefers to help a sports injury heal and is “reluctant to advise people to give up their sport,” because she recognizes that participating in athletics is often an asset to the patient’s overall quality of life. As a runner, and a busy mom of three, Dr. Gephart says “my feet take a beating and I am too busy to give myself a pedicure.” Dr. Gephart’s practice offers a medical spa where clients can indulge in a foot facial. Dr. Gephart will consult with each individual to develop a custom treatment plan. The foot facials are done by Marilyn Taylor, a licensed medical assistant and master cosmetologist and ensure a sterile pedicure, using medical grade products, and finished with anti-fungal nail polish. The foot facials are ideal for all individuals, including those with weakened immune systems . The practice is located at 147 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 4230. Appointments can be made by calling Rebecca Edwards, office manager, at 404.806.3731. Find them online at www.tammygephartdpm.com or on Facebook and Twitter. Office hours are M-F, 8am - 5pm and Saturdays by appointment. If you are in pain, Dr. Gephart will make sure you are seen the same day you call. Dr. Gephart is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the Georgia Podiatric Medical Association, the American Association for Women Podiatrists and the American Diabetes Association. She holds a Georgia State Podiatric License and is certified in Endoscopic Decompression of Internal Nerve Technique and Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy. P A I D   A D V E R T I S E M E N T

What is the Velocity of Money and How Does it Impact Home Loan Rates? By Holly Walther Georgia Banking Company

ssHolly Walther

If you’ve been watching the economic news, you’ve probably noticed that markets pay close attention to economic reports which are released daily. Obviously, those reports provide insight into the health of our economy, but did you know they also influence home loan rates? One important report, the report on personal spending, can actually influence the interest rates that are available when you purchase or refinance a home.

Here’s why. It has to do with something called the velocity of money. Even though the government keeps pumping money into the system, nothing happens until that money is spent or lent – and passes from one hand to another or one business to another. The speed at which this money passes between parties is called the velocity of money.

Zonings and Variances for December The following is a list of zonings to be reviewed by the Planning Commission on Wednesday, December 1, at 9am. The Board of Commissioners will vote on these zonings Tuesday, December 14, at 9am. These listings are provided by the East Cobb Civic Association, Inc. For comments and final actions by these organizations, please visit www.eastcobb.net. Petition Z-38: J & H Property Leasing, LLC, represented by Mark Houston, requests a rezoning from GC to CRC for a carwash, light auto servicing and a billboard. Located at the southwest intersection of Delk Road and Powers Ferry Road. Size of tract : 0.817 acres. Current zoning: GC. Proposed use: Carwash, Light Auto Servicing and a Billboard. Petition Z-39: Cindy Cornely, representing herself, requests a rezoning from NS to CRC for a Dog Boarding Facility. Located on the northeast intersection of Lower Roswell Road and Woodlawn Drive. Size of tract: 0.97 acres. Current zoning: NS. Proposed use: Dog Boarding Facility. Petition Z-41: Health Care Capital Consolidated, Inc., represented by Parks F. Huff of Sams Larkin & Huff, requests a change in zoning from R-20 to RSL for a Senior Living Facility. Located on the south side of Lower Roswell Road, northeasterly of Cove Drive. Size of tract: 9.63 acres. Current zoning: R-20. Proposed use: Senior Living Facility. The following is a list of variances to be reviewed by the Board of Zoning Appeals Wednesday, December 8, at 1pm.

With the job market still very sluggish, consumers aren’t spending much money these days, and businesses are still reluctant to spend money to make investments in their business. With the present velocity at low levels, inflation remains subdued and that’s good for home loan rates. While we certainly want to see better economic recovery news in the near future, we have to remember that there’s an inverse relationship between good economic news and home loan rates. Weak economic news normally causes money to flow out of Stocks and into Bonds, which helps Bonds and home loan rates improve. Strong economic news, on the other hand, normally has the opposite result. Currently, home loan rates are at a historically low level, but that situation won’t last forever. That means now is an ideal time to purchase a home or refinance before the velocity of money – and rates – change. If you or anyone you know would like to learn more about the current economic situation and how to take advantage of historically low home loan rates, then please contact me.

Petition V-86: Monica and Ric Robinson, representing themselves, request: 1) allow an accessory structure to the side of the primary structure; and 2) waive the side setback for said structure from the required 10 ft. to 2 ft. adjacent to the northern property line for an existing shed. Property is located on the west side of Ruger Drive, west of Mossburg Court (2480 Ruger Court). Size of tract: 0.516 acres. Current zoning: R-20. Reason: Existing Shed. Petition V-9: Atlanta Pools, represented by Michael Cochran, requests to waive the impervious surface requirement from 35% to 44% for a pool. Property is located on the south side of Vendome Place, north of Monet Drive (4550 Vendome Place). Size of tract: 0.3558 acres. Current zoning: R-15. Reason: Swimming Pool.

Make A New Year’s Resolution to Advertise in the EAST COBBER!

48 December 2010

You’ve been hard at work raising your family or growing your career and now you’re retired. What to do with all that spare time? Cobb RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) provides volunteer opportunities for retired seniors age 55 and above who still want to stay connected and give back to their community. Over the years, volunteers through RSVP have provided thousands of hours assisting organizations, agencies and even local governments by helping in various tasks. Some of these “stations” include the front desk at both the Cobb County Sheriff Department and Animal Control; ushers and ticket takers at the newly opened Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre; field trip chaperones, receptionists, data input processors, and tutors at Cobb Community Services Board. There are also needs for tour guides at the Root House in Marietta as well as at KSU’s Holocaust Studies Program to provide exhibitions and public programs that promote diversity, build character and encourage respect. If you have a desire to volunteer in your community, and are at least 55 years of age, Cobb RSVP would love to hear from you. All you have to do is call Carolyn Bain at (770) 528-5355 and share with her your interest-she’ll find the perfect spot for you.

Free Website Helps Older Georgians Make Informed Housing and Care Decisions Center for Positive Aging Site Connects Seniors With Services They Need A free website that helps consumers learn about housing and care options for older Georgians, such as affordable senior housing and continuing care retirement communities, is now available from the Center for Positive Aging. The website, www.centerforpositiveaging.org, provides older Georgians, their families and caregivers with a way to quickly find essential resources as well as answers to their elder care questions via an easy-to-navigate website available at no charge 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “In times like these it is important to be an educated consumer when making decisions about health care options, especially those involving housing,” said Walter Coffey, president of the Center for Positive Aging and of Aging Services of Georgia, which represents mission-driven providers. “The Center for Positive Aging website helps consumers understand the network of aging services in Georgia and make smart decisions about their future.” “Decisions about continuing care often have to be made quickly and without the luxury of time to do research,” said Coffey. “This free site helps consumers by explaining the various levels of continuing care, providing detailed information about what to look for and supplying readers with questions to ask when selecting a provider.”

The website also lists Quality Providers who adhere to certain established criteria. In order to be listed, providers of senior-related products and services, as well as congregations throughout Georgia with a ministry for seniors, must commit to being a mission-driven organization with a focus on quality, person-centered care and services. They must also meet all state licensure requirements; possess a good reputation in their local community; have a good record of performance in licensing inspections and state surveys; have leadership/ownership/ management that is resident/client-focused; and be committed to providing their staff with opportunities to develop increased proficiency and excellence. For more information, visit www.centerforpositiveaging.org. Since 1982, the Center for Positive Aging has been the trusted source of connections to quality providers for older Georgians, their families and caregivers. Originally named Downtown Area Senior Services (DASS) and now a division of Aging Services of Georgia, the Center is a respected referral source offering solutions that answer the needs of seniors without regard to ethnicity, disability, financial resources or sexual orientation.

Other information available includes tips on interviewing in-home caregivers, answers to elder law questions, what to look for in an assisted living community and a ZIP code search of providers. Providers are listed by type including affordable senior housing, adult day services, continuing care retirement communities, home and community-based services, hospice care and nursing homes.
