PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover Featured on our cover this month is Andrea Stadler, this year’s EAST COBBER Mother of the Year. This recognition was “unexpected” says Andrea, “I don’t like all this attention . . . but my kids are so excited about me winning . . .” Andrea is the mother of Hayden, a sixth grader at Mount Bethel Christian Academy; Harrison, a second-grader at Sope Creek Elementary; and Helen, a first grader, also at Sope Creek. As a working mom, (Andrea

In 1914, Congress set the second Sunday in May as a national day “for public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers.” For the past 17 years, the EAST COBBER has set aside the front cover of the May issue for our annual Mother of the Year recipient. Congratulations, Andrea Stadler! Her husband’s essay (on page 6) finds the “Sacred” in her ordinary obligations as a mother. This contest is a special way to recognize mothers in our community, like so many other moms throughout the world, who commit to caring for their children in simple ways every day, and yet, these routines and their profound effects are often taken for granted.

This issue spotlights other May traditions: graduations and gardens. EAST COBBER features the STAR students (page 8), scholarship winners (page 9) and lists the local high school graduations on 41. On page 40, we spotlight Chestnut Ridge Christian Church’s efforts to bring the community together through their community garden. By publishing stories about these annual rituals and celebrations, I hope they inspire you to share in the joy of these proud accomplishments and appreciate the good in our community.

to carve out time to exercise

Like the meaning behind Mother’s Day, the EAST COBBER publishes stories every month as a way to publicly express a love and reverence for the people contributing to the quality of life in East Cobb. By spotlighting the people, places and events that are unique and special to East Cobb I hope you realize the “Sacred”—the precious profoundness-- in our everyday East Cobb lives. Happy Mother’s Day!

“lives by a schedule” and has a “very helpful husband” to help her manage her family’s busy life. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” says Andrea. In her rare spare time, Andrea likes to garden. She has also committed every day. As her husband, Kes, writes in his nominating essay, Andrea has lost 110 pounds. “I have to be healthy for my kid’s sake, says Andrea, “and I enjoy my ‘me time’ walking around my neighborhood.” Andrea enjoys living in what she calls, the “East Cobb bubble.” “Everything you need— from my kids’ sports leagues to shops to great schools—is all within a five-mile radius.” The Stadler Family lives in the Sibley Forest subdivision. Andrea Stadler: East Cobber Mother of the Year She has been our Sunday school teacher, soccer coach, team mom, Daisy co-leader, swim team coordinator, fund raiser chair, helper parent at school, and so much more! We don’t know how she get’s it all done, and works full-time outside the home! She always puts “family first”. You will never hear a cross word from her about the kids, or how hard it is to keep going when a day is long. She still has a smile on her face, even when she was up the entire night with sick kids or she had to make the last minute run to the doctor. Andrea has sacrificed and given so much for our children that I really cannot put it into words. She has always been there with unconditional love, guidance and strength. Her heart is full with nothing but good things for everyone she meets.

ssAndrea Stadler with her son, Hayden, 12; husband, Kes; (in front row:) Helen, 6; and, Harrison, 8.

Here is the winning essay written by Kes Stadler nominating his wife, Andrea Stadler. “My children and I would like to start by telling you why we think that our mom, Andrea Stadler, should receive this year’s Mother of the Year Award. Our mom is raising three strong and caring children. She has worked extremely hard to make sure we never have any doubts about her dedication to us and our family. She is a very loving, understanding and compassionate mother.

She has also worked extremely hard to reach a personal goal she set for herself 2 years ago. Her goal was to get back to a healthy lifestyle, and take off the weight she put on over the past 16 years. With her unwavering determination, positive attitude, exercise, and eating healthy, she has almost reached her goal! Andrea tells people she feels like she did in her twenties, not someone in their forties! She has lost 110 pounds, and we are very proud of her. Words cannot even come close to telling you how remarkable this woman is. She has not only had a positive impact on our family, but with everyone in the East Cobb community. She truly deserves this award and needs to know just how special she really is. WE LOVE YOU, MOM!!!!!”

Teacher and Student Co-Author Best-Selling Novel A writing relationship that began five years ago in elementary school between a teacher and a fifth-grade student has blossomed into a best-selling fantasy novel for the pre-teen and early teen crowd. Eileen Jedlicka, the teacher, and Kelly Huban, the student, just released their first novel, In the Blink of an Eye - A ssCo-authors Eileen Jedlicka and Mannequin’s Tale, garKelly Huban nering interest among young readers in North Atlanta. It has sold out the first publishing run. Though billed as a novel for the young reader, it tells a timeless story that appeals to all. In a publishing environment that lures young readers with graphic stories of violence, dark characters and compromising behavior, In the Blink of an Eye – A Mannequin’s Tale reminds them that goodness and hope remain in the world if they just seek it. “Bringing the right message to the young reader is so important today. It’s also important to know what’s on their minds. That’s why my collaboration with Kelly as a co-author for this first novel was so important,” Jedlicka said. The novel centers on the goodness of the human spirit and the power of love to remind all of us that hope is the most powerful of the human emotions. It playfully calls upon inanimate objects to humanize themselves by responding to their human owners’ wants and needs. The central character, a wooden store mannequin, discovers that love and hope are

all he needs to realize his dreams. The novel weaves magic, myths and the hopes and dreams of humankind into a compelling story. Jedlicka noticed Kelly’s talent for writing when she was in her fifth grade class at Mt. Bethel Elementary School in East Cobb County. When Jedlicka decided to write this book, she knew she needed Kelly’s imagination and her voice. “I had many wonderful and talented students in my 26-year career at teaching but Kelly stood out. Her writing ability was only trumped by her enthusiasm and work ethic. When I retired and decided to write a young reader’s novel, I knew Kelly would be the ideal co-author and make a significant contribution,” she added. For her part, the now-freshman at Walton High School in Cobb County recalls her days working on class projects at Mt. Bethel but never envisioned any of those projects would lead to a published novel. “When Mrs. Jedlicka approached me about a book, I was really, really excited. But then I got concerned whether we could do it. That doesn’t concern me now,” Huban said as she turned the finished novel over in her hand and pointed to her name on the front cover. Both authors have booked speaking engagements at local schools in the North Atlanta area. “It used to be that parents and students would come to me and make appointments weeks into the future. As a fifth grade teacher my life was very busy. Now that I am retired, I find myself trying to fit my schedule into Kelly’s very busy life. Thankfully, I know she’ll be devoted to writing and I can’t wait to see what she turns out on her own,” Jedlicka said.

Rowing Crew Attracts East Cobb Athletes

Todd Summers

Rowing is a sport in which athletes race against each other on rivers, on lakes or on the ocean, depending upon the type of race and the discipline. It is both recreational and competitive, is one of the oldest Olympic sports and is referred to as crew.

as first generation crew. The young men celebrated the team’s success and spoke of the hard work and camaraderie between each squad. Todd said; “It’s individual commitment with team effort that moves us….and we move into first place a lot”.

Since its formation in 1988, St. Andrew Rowing Club has attracted some of the best young athletes in East Cobb and combined with youth from all around metro Atlanta, the team tops 100. Local competition for example, with the Atlanta Jr. Rowing Club, takes place mostly in the southeast, in Florida, Tennessee and the Carolinas, and has led the St. Andrew crew to Youth Nationals and success at the Head of the Charles, a Boston elite competition. The team works closely and welcomes all athletes regardless of ability or experience.

Our ladies in crew include Lassiter junior, Ansley Odell, a Novice waiting anxiously for her Varsity jacket and Sprayberry sophomore, Jessica Hatch. Jessica, whose grandfather rowed crew at Harvard, is the fastest on her squad and has been rowing for 2 seasons. Both young ladies agreed that this is the most physical activity they have ever done and that the discipline and commitment helps them to excel at their other extracurricular activities: track and field and band.

Among the top performers are several young East Cobb residents. 5 year rower, Todd Summers, a Pope HS senior committed to the University of Delaware, has his sister’s oar strokes to follow. She set the bar high for her brother as she rowed for Allegany and now coaches Oken Catholic Rowing Club. David Rink, a Pope HS junior, rowing now for 4 years also has his brother’s 7 years of experience to look to and Max Kinger, a Walton junior is establishing the rowing tradition in his family

Paul Merrion, rowing since 2003, is the Team Director and began rowing at St. Andrew’s as a freshman at Pope HS. He continued to compete until college and now oversees all the coaches. Paul remarked that if an athlete is willing to show up and work hard, there is a place for them and teamwork and leadership will ensure that every athlete finds his or her way to help fulfill the St. Andrew Rowing Club vision and realize St. Andrew’s motto: “Traditions of Excellence”. Spectacular Egg Hunt Held at Sprayberry High School On Saturday, April 23, 8,000 people gathered for the second annual Northeast Cobb Egg Drop and Egg Hunt. Held at Sprayberry High School, the highlight of the event was when a helicopter flew over Sprayberry’s Jim Frazier Stadium to drop thousands of eggs on the football field. In addition to collecting eggs, families and children enjoyed face painting, food and jumping on inflatables. This very special event was produced by Piedmont Baptist Church and the Northeast Cobb Business Association.

Feeder Football Comes to East Cobb football. CFL President Nick Kavadellas (Kell) is joined by Chip Patterson (Walton), Steve Brooks (Harrison) and Joe Barker (McEachern) to oversee this program for children ages 5-11. In addition, Derek Cook (Kell Head Football Coach) and Rocky Hidalgo (Walton Head Football Coach) have been instrumental in forming the CFL. “We are excited about our inaugural season,” comments Kavadellas. “The CFL began because Cobb didn’t have anything like this at the youth level and our kids were playing in the Cherokee Youth Football Association (CYFA). The CYFA has been instrumental in the formation of the new CFL and I want to personally thank them for their support.” Building camaraderie is not the only goal of the CFL. Other counties with youth feeder programs like the CYFA and Gwinnett Football League (GFL) have experienced a greater continuity of play, instruction of common athletic philosophies and the establishment of a core group of people willing to support their local high school athletic teams.

ssDerek Cook, Kell Head Football Coach; Rocky Hidalgo, Walton Head Football Coach; and Nick Kavadellas, President, Cobb Football League.

Finally! Cobb County is getting the feeder football league it’s always needed. Called the Cobb Football League (CFL), this new youth football and cheer program is the first of its kind in Cobb County and is under the leadership of four men who, collectively, have devoted more than 20 years as volunteers for Cobb County high school, junior and youth

“This is a win-win situation for everyone,” comments Coach Derek Cook. “Cobb kids, parents and high school athletics will all benefit from the creation of the CFL.” Currently the league includes the following Cobb high schools: Harrison, Kell, McEachern, Pope, Walton, and Wheeler. In addition, many other Cobb County schools have expressed interest in joining next season and others are sure to follow. In the meantime, students in those districts may play for any other team in the CFL. Visit the CFL website at www.cobbfootball.com for information.

Lassiter’s Soccer Team Named Number Two in Nation

ssBottom row (l-r) Price Donaldson, Ashton Dinnan, Trey Luscre, Andy Bujarski. Middle row (l-r) Coach Billy Pritz, Brandon Barbero, Robbie Cutchin, Collin Mills, Justin Shaw, Jon Stoll, Shaban Abousaud, Nick Cantu, Drake Dinnan. Back row (l-r) Bubba Hanks, Bennett Eldredge, Ryan Deveikis, Colton Bryant, Christian Johnson, Tyler Happ, Alex Champion, Will Robinson, Will Stubbs.

The Lassiter High School Men’s Varsity soccer team is on a mission: to win the Georgia state 5AAAAA soccer championship. With nine starters returning from last year, an overall record of 15-0-1 and a Class 5AAAAA record of 6-0, they just may do it. Coach Billy Pritz instructs this close-knit group of guys who are ranked number two in the Powerade Fab 50 Spring Rankings of the best teams in the country.

The boys soccer head coach for six years and a teacher at Rocky Mount Elementary, Coach Pritz enjoys the day to day of teaching the team. “Seeing what the kids learn at practice come out in the game, and watching them grow as individuals and a team is the best part” Pritz said. Coach Pritz was also named Marietta Daily Journal’s Cobb County boys soccer coach of the year.

Competing against the teams in their region has posed no problem this year for the Trojans, gathering wins against Woodstock, Etowah, Wheeler, Marietta, Cherokee, and Walton. With the undefeated record in their conference, the Trojans finish in first place and qualify for the playoffs. When asked who their toughest competition was, Coach Pritz replied it was fellow East Cobb high school Walton. “Walton is number three in the state, and a lot of the guys played club soccer together growing up, so there is always a good rivalry between these two schools.”

The heart and soul of the team, the Trojans’ six seniors, plan on playing college soccer after graduation. So far, midfielder Tyler Happ signed with Clemson University and defenseman Colton Bryant signed with Villanova University. To learn more about Lassiter soccer, visit www. Lassitersoccer.org. Also, visit www.rise.espn.go.com/ boys-soccer/team-rankings/spring-2011-rankings/2011/ Preseason.aspx to learn more about the Powerade Fab 50 rankings.

The Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church presents the 21st Annual Marietta Greek Festival May 13-15. The Marietta Greek Festival will be held on the church grounds at 3431Trickum Road in East Cobb. Many people in the East Cobb community have watched The Marietta Greek Festival grow from its humble beginnings at the Cobb County Civic Center to an anticipated yearly community event held on the church’s beautiful grounds. 2011 marks the 21st anniversary of the Marietta tradition, and all are invited to come celebrate and escape to Greece! From the homemade Greek food and pastries, the live Greek music, authentic Greek dancing, and so much more, it is fun for the whole family! Festival guests will enjoy traditional ethnic specialties such as Moussaka, Pastitsio, Dolmades and the great Gyro sandwich. The art and design of the church not only create a distinctive atmosphere for worship, but also reflect and embody many of the fundamental beliefs of Orthodoxy. Come and learn about the symbolism of the beautiful Byzantine-style sanctuary. Over a dozen authentic vendors set up their shops inside the Festival’s Agora (Marketplace). Come by to see items created in the Greek tradition, such as fine imported Greek jewelry, handmade linens, hip scarves, delicious Greek pastries, Greek cookbooks and travel books, decorative art pieces, hand done oil paintings, beautiful Mediterranean candle holders, glass blown items and wood crafted items from the Holy Land--just to name a few. Shim’s Academy Staff and Friends Save Cat Late in the evening on April 1, Master Shim of Shim’s Tae Kwon Do Academy located in Marietta/East Cobb, was closing his studio for spring break when he was alerted to the desperate meows of a cat stuck in the wall behind his furnace. In an ssLuvey attempt to rescue the feline Shim contacted 911, who then put him in touch with Cobb County Animal Control; unfortunately, after several attempts no one could free the barricaded feline.

“It took about an hour and a half of cutting and sawing. The space between the wall was only about 6 inches wide,” says Natalie Thomas, “we finally got an opening big enough to see into the wall. . . I poked my head in and coaxed the kitty to come to me. She did, without hesitating.” After a successful extrication, the famished feline was fed a wholesome can of tuna and the real work began. Dinah Absi, and Natalie Thomas, a registered nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital, went to work to find their new friend a home. “We posted on Facebook, we called rescue groups and told all of our friends and coworkers,” says Thomas.

But Master Shim and his business associate, Dinah Absi would not give up. They called Natalie Thomas whose children attend the Academy and knew the Thomas family to be avid pet lovers with their own zoo of sorts (two dogs, one cat, a bearded dragon lizard, two hermit crabs and several fish). The whole family came to Shim’s Academy to see how they could help.

Then once again, luck ruled in the cat’s favor when local cat rescue group, Cats in the Cradle, said they could help find Luvey a home. After receiving a thorough checkup by a local veterinarian who works with the group, Luvey (named for her loving disposition) was given a clean bill of health and posted for adoption . Thanks to the combined efforts of Master Shim, Dinah Absi, the Thomas family, and the rescue team of Cats in the Cradle, Luvey has been adopted.

East Cobb Church Creates Community Garden By Elizabeth Wentz

ssBill Walker, Marilyn Richter, Laverne Evans, Leslie Juhn, Debbie Abernathy, and Claire Stine

Gardening is a favorite past-time of many East Cobbers, but HOA regulations and awkward sun exposure often limit residents’ plant selection to only the most common types of annuals. Thanks to a group at Chesnut Ridge Christian Church, East Cobb gardeners can put their green thumbs to work for a good cause at the Chestnut Ridge Christian Church Community Garden.

Abernathy said the idea for a community garden came after seeing similar gardens in other areas of the United States, particularly in Boston. “This is a movement across the country. Our area is beginning to embrace it,” she added.

40 May 2011

The program is led by church member and Cobb County Master Gardener Debbie Abernathy. The community garden is a series of 32 raised beds built on a formerly unused portion of land on the church grounds. Ten of the beds have been designated as sources for the church’s Feed the Hungry outreach program that provides produce to area organizations like MUST Ministries, the Extension for Women, Center for Family Resources and the Marietta First Christian food pantry. Community gardeners are also asked to donate 10% of their harvest for charitable giving. In 2010, 150 pounds of vegetables were harvested and donated from the church garden program.

Garden plots are available for lease for $1 per square foot ($16 for a 4x4 plot, $30 for a 3x10). Plant selection is at the discretion of the gardener, though the inclusion of vegetables is encouraged. Monetary gifts and donations of small garden implements like wheelbarrows, garden carts and hand tools are also needed. For more information on becoming a community gardener, contact Debbie Abernathy at 770-843-6100 or Debbie@ esmithair.com. Chestnut Ridge Christian Church is located at 2663 Johnson Ferry Road in East Cobb.

Operation Homefront: Serving Those Who Serve For Us By Jinna Marbry tary pay schedule issues, even transitional housing dilemmas when a soldier returns home with an injury. The target population is American military personnel and/ or their families who have unmet needs due to financial hardship, death, injury, or physical or mental detriment as a result of service in Iraq or Afghanistan. These may include active duty, Reserve, National Guard and veteran service members. They are a diverse ethnic group (64 percent are minorities): approximately 20 percent are African-American; 5 percent Asian-American; 34 percent Hispanic/Latino; 5 percent Native American; and 36 percent Caucasian. The majority of our clients are the lowest-paid service members, the E-1 through E-6 enlisted ranks. Roughly 75 percent live at an income level 80 percent below the median income for the communities in which they reside.

ssKim Scoffi,Operation Homefront Director with volunteers Liz Fichtel, Linda Lemoi, and Ernie Fichtel

For Georgia military families, having a soldier deployed for an extended time can be a new, scary frontier. Families face everyday tasks compounded with the stress of a loved one in active duty. This is where Operation Homefront (Georgia Chapter) steps in. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Operation Homefront was formed in February 2002. It was developed to support the families of deployed service members immediately following 9/11. Operation Homefront is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, and has evolved into a major nonprofit organization. The organization currently provides services to military families across the nation with 23 chapters serving 32 states. Often these families face financial hardships including: emergency home repairs, mili-

Based in East Cobb, Operation Homefront-GA serves around 1,000 families a month in the state of Georgia. Their goal is to make military families feel comfortable and welcome in times of great stress. “Our first aim is to makes sure those bills get paid, that they (military families) don’t worry about having a roof over their head, having diapers or milk. . . if you have ever been in that situation it is terrifying,” says Kim Scoffi, Executive Director for Georgia’s Operation Homefront; “add to that the worrying about whether or not their husband is alive.” Kim Scoffi leads a small but very dedicated team. Her Operation Homefront staff pride themselves on giving their all to their mission with 96 cents of every donation dollar going to the military families. While the needs can be physically and emotionally demanding there are times that bring a smile to the faces of the team. As Kim recalls, “There was one instance when a Florida chapter called to ask if we could house some donated wedding dresses. To my surprise, I received an urgent 7 a.m. call that a tractor-trailer had arrived holding 300 dresses for storage. After I unloaded the dresses in the pouring rain, we came up with the idea to have a mass wedding for 20 military couples that were given the wedding of their dreams.” It is the creativity and dedication of this East Cobb team that inspire the many activities that Operation Homefront hosts including the Atlanta Braves Hometown Heroes and Falcons’ Family of the Game which recognize one special military family at each home game, as well as the various weekly activities to support local military wives. Operation Homefront is currently sponsoring a diaper drive (that will run through the summer) and coordinating their annual backpack drive which runs through June. Operation Homefront is located at 1220 Old Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb. For more information on donating to or volunteering for Operation Homefront visit www. operationhomefront.net/georgia.

WellStar East Cobb Health Park Update Convenient healthcare is not far away for East Cobb residents with the planned WellStar East Cobb Health Park – a community-based outpatient care center featuring a wide range of healthcare services. Over the next five years, outpatient healthcare is expected to grow 30% in the United States. This national trend of providing hospital-quality care closer to home is a major departure from the current model in which patients may be required to visit several different locations, often including a hospital, in order to meet their healthcare needs. WellStar Health System is addressing this growing demand for convenience. The WellStar East Cobb Health Park initiative will focus on the overall health and wellness of the community, not only through clinical services, but also by providing services such as chronic disease management, complementary medicine, screenings, fitness programs and education. The facility is planned for the corner of Roswell and Providence Roads in

East Cobb on 23 acres of property. Initial plans include services such as an outpatient surgery center, primary care, pediatric and specialty care physician offices, imaging and laboratory services, women’s health center, urgent care, education & wellness center and a sleep center. This innovative service model ultimately will improve healthcare access and convenience for the communities WellStar serves, including East Cobb. In fact, according to a consumer survey of East Cobb residents in August 2010, 75-88% of respondents, depending on the type of service provided, thought these services were very appealing. To better meet the needs of the community, WellStar created the East Cobb Health Park Advisory Committee, a group of more than 45 neighbors and business and community leaders. The committee was created in September 2010 and meets on a regular basis to provide input about the project. The WellStar East Cobb Health Park is slated to open in 2013.

Coach’s Corner

for the business of life

With Peter Allen

Are You In Business For Your Self? If you own a business, have a job, are unemployed or retired, and you receive and spend money, the answer is “Absolutely yes.” Why? Because in today’s world your whole life is a business. If you are an owner of a business: You either bought it or created it to sell products and/or services and you conduct the business assuming full control, responsibility and risk. If you are employed or contracted by a company: You are responsible for fulfilling the tasks and mission for which you were hired. You are using your skills and talents. Therefore, you assume part of the risk. If you are unemployed and are seeking employment: You’re in the business of marketing and identifying and selling your skills and talents. If you are retired: You are responsible for using your skills, talents and interest to create a life of fulfillment based on how you spend your time and money Your whole life can benefit from applying the principles of operating a successful, productive business. Your life has a beginning and end, just like a business. It goes through various stages as it matures, and you have 24 hours each day to manage and create the life you want. It would be to your benefit to change the way you look at all your relationships. An example is the way you view your employment relationship. Rather than thinking of yourself as being an employee, see yourself as a business person with the perception of, “I am selling my unique skills and talents to the company to fulfill the tasks and mission for which I was hired.” The benefit of this perception is that it will make you stronger. Thinking as a business person, you become more aware of continually improving your skills, talents and interest so that you are always marketable. When the time comes for you to quit, get laid off or be ‘downsized,’ you then become an entrepreneur to create and build a mechanism to market you, your skills and talents to an employer or to create your own business. The same will hold true when the time comes for you to create a joyful fulfilling transition into semi- or full retirement. Your whole life, as with a business, has similar categories and tasks, things to plan, create, manage and improve: Career/Business, Money Management, Health, Family, Social Relationships (personal friends/significant other and business associates), Personal and Professional Mastery, and Physical Environment (fun and recreation). As a business, life and retirement coach, I assist you into breaking free of the barriers and transition into the results you desire. I will guide you in your journey by gaining clarity in your purpose, goals and vision, uncover and identify the obstacles and challenges. I provide processes that will enable you to move through them effectively so that you can create the business and life you desire with passion, prosperity, balance, and fulfillment. Call me at 770-977-2232 with any questions or comments. Visit my website www.breakingfreecoaching.com where you will find several articles on related topics. Pete Allen Purpose, Passion & Prosperity

WellStar’s New Vision Service Helps Patients With Drug and Alcohol Issues After spending nearly a year taking a pain killer prescribed by her doctor following an accident, Karen* decided she was ready to quit. She stopped taking the medication cold-turkey, but quickly found out the dangers of doing so. “I learned the hard way that you can become violently ill when you try to quit these meds on your own,” said Karen. “I heard about New Vision™ in the emergency room after trying to quit myself.” The New Vision Service is an inpatient medical stabilization service for adults in withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. Located at WellStar Cobb Hospital, this service is the only one of its kind in Georgia and has treated more than 350 people since opening in July, 2009. The voluntary service accepts adults who are currently using or are experiencing withdrawal symptoms from drugs and/ or alcohol. New Vision is the only medical stabilization service in Georgia in which patients are admitted to the medical floor of a hospital instead of a psychiatric facility (if the patient is stable psychiatrically and deemed an appropriate fit for the service). “I was treated with dignity and not made to feel that I did something wrong,” said Karen. “There was always someone to talk with and everyone was so kind. They made me comfortable.” Many rehabilitation facilities require patients to be drug-free upon admission, which is difficult for many patients to achieve on their own. New Vision allows patients to safely become drug free, by stabilizing them medically, so that they may focus on other elements of their rehabilitation after discharge.

“New Vision puts people in a great position to achieve sobriety,” said Melissa Wetherington, service coordinator for New Vision at WellStar Cobb Hospital. “During their time at New Vision participants are in an environment that allows them to safely and comfortably get their bodies ready for the treatment that they will receive during their next phase of care. Being in a hospital environment gives participants the peace of mind to know that they are receiving quality care from a team of medical experts.”

In last month’s issue, the Cobb Adult Soccer League (CASL) was featured as the place to play to soccer if you were over the age of 30. Unfortunately, the story failed to mention that the CASL offers the younger set an opportunity to play competitively. In fact, out of the over 1000 players competing in the league, 782 are between the ages of 18-30. The CASL has ten (10) Division 1 competitive teams - 8 men’s and 2 women’s; seventeen (17) Division 2 competitive 14 men’s and 3 women’s; twenty (20) open Division 3 teams - 16 men’s & 2 women’s; and (8) open and highly competitive Hispanic teams. “CASL divisions are different levels of skill and competition. . . They go up in a pyramid shape with the largest pool in Division 3 and the smallest (top) in Division 1,” says Karon Beyer, Business Manager of the Cobb Adult Soccer League. After the sixteen week season, the CASL offers a special summer league division for (U19) high school teams that want to stay together before heading off to college. A bridge between youth and adult, college coaches love it as it helps the players stay in shape during the summer.

moving and what’s not. In addition, the office utilizes an entirely digital paperless record keeping system, advanced thermography, and flat panel digital DR x-ray, resulting in the fastest results in the shortest amount of time. Dr Berner states, “It’s my belief that chiropractors should not only be able to find and correct the problem, but also be able to prove to their patients that the problem was corrected and that’s exactly what we do in this office.” He continues “It’s amazing how many people in the community are tired of being told drugs and surgeries are the answer to their prob-

Red Cross Calls for Blood Donors Blood is needed for transfusions in emergency and trauma situations. From the emergency room to the operating room to post op, hospitals use blood every single day. Patients with broken bones, injured in car accidents, even cancer patients are in need of blood transfusions. The American Red Cross says that’s why it’s so important to give blood. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors. Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors with type O (positive and negative), B negative and A negative blood should consider an automated red cell donation, a process in which only red cells are donated. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.givelife.org. South Carolina’s Woodlands Inn Offers Five-Star Luxury Close to Charleston by Elizabeth Wentz

Nestled in the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry in the charming town of Summerville, is the magnificent Woodland’s Inn. Just under five hours from East Cobb and a half hour away from Historic Charleston, the Woodland’s Inn is an upscale, romantic alternative to a typical weekend away. The interior of the Inn is the definition of quiet luxury. From the understated antique reproduction furniture to the sumptuously appointed bathrooms, the experience is obviously in the details here. And few, if any, details have been overlooked. The staff strives to fulfill every wish of every guest and they pride themselves on going above and beyond, all in the name of Southern hospitality. “When you come here, it’s like staying in your relatives’ home,” said Wayne Malagon, director of operations. A sophisticated relative with impeccable taste, to be exact. That sentiment is the perfect way to describe my recent stay at the Woodland’s Inn. From the moment we arrived at the Inn we were treated like dear friends - the staff was friendly and attentive without intruding on our relaxing respite. They knew us by name and were quick to round up the car or a forgotten toothbrush. Anything we needed was presented immediately without hassle. Otherwise we were left to enjoy the grounds, read on the front porch rockers and bask in the quiet of the Lowcountry. Woodlands Inn is just 25 miles from Charleston, making it easy to drive in and spend a few hours browsing antique shops and enjoying the antebellum atmosphere

while indulging in the quiet luxury of an off the beaten path getaway. Small-town South Carolina may seem an unlikely place for an upscale inn, but it’s that hidden gem quality that makes a visit all the more worthwhile. Of course, the Inn isn’t exactly the world’s best kept secret - the property has received both the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond awards for lodging and dining. But thanks to the attentive staff and plenty of private space, guests are made to feel like they’re the only ones in the Inn. Built in 1906 by Robert Parsons, the son of a New York railroad baron, the property was originally a private residence. The Woodlands Inn now boasts 18 guest rooms, amenities including clay tennis courts, a recently refurbished pool, a soon-to-be completed spa and a hidden chef’s garden for special events. The Inn is also petfriendly. Add to this a soothing mix of Southern charm and five star luxury and you have the recipe for a romantic getaway for two or a family-friendly weekend in the Lowcountry. The entire 42-acre property is also available for meeting and special event rental, including weddings. In spite of the lavish surroundings, the real standout at the Woodlands Inn is the Dining Room. The only five star, five diamond restaurant in South Carolina, dinner at the Woodlands Inn Dining Room is so much more than just a meal. Whether you prefer more traditional gourmet fare or the inventive selections of Chef Andrew Chadwick’s ever-evolving tasting menu, this is truly an experience to

savor. A romantic meal enjoying the seven-course black truffle tasting menu in the intimate setting of the Dining Room was the perfect way to celebrate a child-free evening for my husband and me.

MAY 7-22

The menu at the Woodlands Inn is impressive to say the least. Diners can choose from more traditional gourmet fare like foie gras, lobster and veal or indulge in the more unusual seasonal choices offered on the ever-changing chef’s tasting menu featuring creative seasonal dishes. The staff only has one request – that every diner in the party choose either the traditional menu or the tasting menu for the best execution of service. On our visit, my husband and I decided to throw caution to the wind and enjoy the seven course “Prestige Tasting Menu” featuring black truffles ($140/per person) and the seven course wine pairing ($78 per person)- essentially the Chef’s tasting menu with two extra courses. Our dinner began with a black truffle champagne cocktail, moved on to a dish of ravioli with a liquid black truffle center, then an artichoke and truffle veloute, squab, the best beef tenderloin I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting, a “truffle truffle” and finally, black truffle ice cream topped with black truffle caramel. Who knew truffles could be prepared in such a variety of ways? Much of the dinner was exquisite and the tenderloin was the star of the show – it was so tender I cut it with a fork and definitely has a place in the food hall of fame. The wine pairings were excellent, bringing out the flavor of each dish and complimenting the meal superbly. We also enjoyed the sommelier’s vivid descriptions of each vintage and were happy to add to our ever-increasing wine knowledge. Dinner at The Woodlands Dining Room is an experience best savored without young children and the Inn staff is more than happy to arrange in-room babysitting while parents enjoy an evening out. An elegantly casual Sunday Brunch is also a family-friendly option. We ended the weekend with a leisurely cup of coffee on our private terrace before making the trip back to East Cobb, relaxed, refreshed and ready to play a return trip to the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Hello, baby. This is one lucky kid. She may not know it yet, but WellStar is one of the region’s best places to be born. At WellStar, she can stay in the same room with her mom – from her very first minutes until she’s ready to go home. And if she needs extra special attention, she’ll have the neonatal intensive care units at WellStar Cobb and Kennestone Hospitals. From the moment her family came to WellStar, she was in good hands. Her mom took classes at one of the world’s largest Lamaze programs. No wonder nearly 12,000 of her new friends will be born this year at WellStar Cobb, Douglas and Kennestone hospitals. Want to say “hello” to WellStar? Call 770-956-STAR to find a physician or schedule a tour of our birthing centers.

We believe every baby deserves a grand entrance.
