I take pride in the comprehensive listings we’ve collected on the camps, vacation bible schools, and special events unique to East Cobb —or at least a short ride to get to. Check out eastcobber.com‘s sports & rec blog as well as the kids & family blog for even more family field trip ideas! In our commitment to build a sense of community in East Cobb, EAST COBBER is partnering with the East Cobb YMCA to create “Playdates in the Park.” Every Tuesday, 10-11:15am, we’ll be at the East Cobb Park, offering a fun and free activity for the kiddos. I am doing this because, with three children, I know how important it is to get out and do something during the summer. I hope we create some special summer memories for you and your family. See page 33 for more information on this fun and free program.,

Featured on the cover this month are Dr. Michael Mansouri and Dr. Azita Mansouri , owners of Marietta Family Dental Care. They are photographed in front of their newly built, state-of-theart building. A graduate of Walton High School, Dr. Michael Mansouri is a long-time East Cobb resident and has practiced dentistry with his wife in East Cobb since 2008. “I’m proud to say that this is my hometown, and that is why I came back to East Cobb. I wanted to help my patients, help the community,

In this world of hype and celebrity, many young men and women are searching for role models. Many of us are lucky to have role models within reach and that we can truly be inspired by. Moms and dads are the most obvious heroes for us to emulate. The people featured in this edition — from Drs. Azita and Michael Mansouri, local dentists that are raising the bar for service and quality in dentistry to the Wood Acre students participating in a play at the Fox Theatre to Sue Otteson featured in our story, “Senior Swimmer Goes For Gold” — all are excellent examples of role models right here in our own backyard, young and older, within our reach. There’s a lot of “good” we can learn from our fellow East Cobbers featured in this issue: hard work, passion, and persistence. These are the keys to doing uncommonly well. I hope after reading this edition, like every edition, you will not only learn a little bit more about what is going on in our community but also be inspired by the people that make East Cobb such a great place to live!

and I also want to raise my family

Speaking of role models, I was fortunate to have a father who made time for me and enjoyed being with me (and my four other siblings). Like a lot of fathers, he may never “go down in history” nor did he make a lot of money, but his quiet and steadfast love for his family combined with his humble acts of helping others, caring for the community, a deep faith in God, always doing your best and his strong patriotism are priceless gifts that influence who I am and what I do to this day. Now that I, and my very helpful husband, are raising three children, I am keenly aware of these values he instilled in me and try my best to pass these valuable lessons on to my children.

East Cobb Dentists Open a New State of the Art Facility

East Cobbers may have noticed a new building recently raised at the site of Marietta Family Dental Care, P.C., 4720 Lower Roswell Road. Drs. Azita and Michael Mansouri are proud to announce the opening of the new home of their practice and welcome the community to visit their brand new, state-of-the-art facility. The husband and wife team of Drs. Azita and Michael Mansouri have practiced dentistry in East Cobb since 2008. Formerly housed in a 1950s-era converted home, the Mansouris were delighted to build a more modern facility in essentially the backyard of the former building. The grand opening was held on May 9, 2011. The interior was designed by Dr. Azita and the Mansouris said their goal was to give patients a “cozy, homey feeling” with patient comfort as the foremost concern. Patients who consider a trip to the dentist as relaxing as, well, a root canal, will enjoy Temper-Pedic cushioning and an entertainment station at every chair, the soothing sounds of water features throughout the office and even a refreshment center while they wait. The music and movie option in the entertainment center is particularly useful during longer procedures and includes Bose noise-cancelling headsets, allowing patients to focus on the music instead of the dentistry. New technology is an integral part of this state-of-the-art facility and patients will see the difference during even a routine visit. With their new camera system, the Drs. Mansouri are able to immediately share digital images of patients’ teeth on a computer screen, eliminating the often awkward maneuvering of a tiny mirror in a patient’s mouth. 6 June/July 2011

The new facility allows them to offer most procedures under one roof, including root canals and implants, saving their patients the time, expense and anxiety of seeking treatment in multiple offices. Dr. Michael is licensed to perform oral sedation as well. Drs. Azita and Michael are passionate about giving back to the East Cobb community. They sponsor various athletic teams at Walton, Sope Creek and Dickerson schools and members of their staff are often found speaking at area elementary schools about oral health and hygiene. They are also active participants in “Dentistry from the Heart,” a non-profit organization that provides free dental care. The Mansouris plan to host a Dentistry from the Heart event at their new office this fall. Drs. Azita and Michael have recently been inducted into the Hinman Dental Society and are members of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, Academy of General Dentistry and Georgia Dental Association. Dr. Michael graduated from Walton High School and received his DMD degree from Temple University School of Dentistry. Dr. Azita received her DMD degree from University of Florida College of Dentistry. Marietta Family Dental Care offers all general family dentistry procedures for patients ages three and up. Cosmetic procedures including Invisalign are also offered. They accept most PPO insurance plans and offer payment plans and third party financing for those without insurance. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the patient coordinator at 770-973-8222 or visit them online at www.naturalsmile.biz.

Eastvalley Student Reads All Newberry Award-Winning Books Mason Favro, a fifth grade student at Eastvalley Elementary School in East Cobb County, has achieved the distinction of reading all 89 Newberry Award books. It is believed that Mason is the first Cobb County student to achieve this goal. The Newberry Medal was established in 1921 and is awarded annually by the Association of Library Service to Children, a division of the ssMason Favro American Library Association, for the most distinguished children’s book published the previous year. The winning book for 2011 is Over Manifest Moon by Clare Vanderpool. Eastvalley Elementary is recognized for its strong reading program. To encourage students to read, the school sponsors a program known as the Eastvalley Reading Club. At the end of each semester the school hosts a celebratory breakfast for all the students who achieved a point threshold appropriate

for their grade level. In addition, the school honors students who pass over ten Newberry books with an Accelerated Reader test score of 80% at an end-of-year assembly. This year the school will honor nineteen students, the highest number of winners ever. Not to be satisfied with only reading 40 Newberry Award books (the cumulative goal for his grade level), Mason embarked upon a challenge from his father, Christopher Favro, to read all 89 award winners. Of course, the equal challenge was locating all 89 books. Mason says his favorite is the very first book he read, The Story of Mankind. Mason’s father, while acknowledging that this accomplishment is remarkable, believes that “it could not have been done without the support of the school’s library staff. They have been a source of encouragement and enthusiasm for Mason throughout his journey.” To honor both Mason and the school, Favro and his wife are in the process of donating a new collection of Newberry titles in Mason’s name. “Mason is a role model for other students. He set a goal and persevered until he accomplished that goal. It is an honor to have such a hardworking student at Eastvalley Elementary,” says Principal Karen Wacker.

Wood Acres Students to Perform at The Fox Theatre boys—took the stage at The Strand for Music Man, Jr. That’s nearly half of the 84 kids who are enrolled in the eligible 4th through 8th grades. When Dowdy encouraged students to attend the TOTS auditions, seven students took the challenge, singing “Any Dream Will Do” solo and dancing for Broadway director Norbert Joerder. Five were cast in Joseph, and seventh-grader Ben Drabik also was cast in TOTS’ July production of Fiddler on the Roof. “I had to beg Ben to be in our first school production,” Dowdy said. “In April, he performed the lead role in Music Man, Jr.”

ssWood Acres School drama students, (from left) Mackenzie Clark, Elizabeth Perryman, Emma Dowdy, Ben Drabik, and Makenzie Clark, will appear at The Fox in June.

When Theater of the Stars (TOTS) presents Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Fox Theatre in June, ten percent of the 50-member children’s chorus will be from a small, private East Cobb school. The budding performers are the product of an all-volunteer musical theater program started just two years ago at The Wood Acres School, when Head of School Judy Thigpen and parent Neeahtima Dowdy—both frustrated performers— started “dreaming.”

In Joseph, the children sing in almost every song. The Old Testament tale is told through a cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, written by the legendary team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Ben and sixth graders Mackenzie Clark, Makenzie Dixon, Emma Dowdy, and Elizabeth Perryman will be onstage for most of the show. The Wood Acres School is located at 1772 Johnson Ferry Road in East Cobb. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat runs Tuesday, June 21, through Sunday, June 26. Fiddler on the Roof runs July 19-24, 2011. Tickets: www.ticketmaster.com or 404-252-8960.

“For the most part, these are kids whose only stage experience is our school musical,” said Dowdy, who serves as director, music director, and choreographer. The first Wood Acres musical cast numbered just 18, with only 3 boys. One year later, 33 students—a dozen

PTA Co-President Thanks Her Fellow Leaders By Abby Shiffman, East Cobb County Council of PTAs Co-President For the past two years I have served as Co-President for the East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA). It has been an honor serving the PTA Membership for all 35 Cobb County schools in East Cobb. But I have not done it alone. I have had the pleasure of working with an Executive Committee, a Board of Directors and all of the PTA/ PTSA Presidents of their respective schools. This year has been especially tough for many PTAs with budget cuts not only to our schools but also in general throughout many of our individual lives. Parents have lost jobs, have had pay cuts, and many have gone back to work or taken on a second job. Many of the PTAs have had decreased membership which decreases the funds with which each individual PTA can bring the programs and enhancements of curriculum to the school. Most of the schools in our area only ask for $5 to join the PTA. Please consider joining your child’s, grandchild’s, neighborhood children’s PTA to help support what the PTA is doing within each of the schools. Just because you join does not mean you have to also volunteer. If you have the time to help out when asked, that would be wonderful. The PTA is a 100% volunteer organization but please remember it is from you becoming a member of the PTA that each school benefits.

Two East Cobb classrooms were recently crowned winners in the 2011 Rain Barrel of Fun program through waterSmart – a conservation education campaign supported by Cobb CountyMarietta Water Authority (CCMWA) and Cobb County Water System. Ms. Linda Barnwell’s second grade class from Addison Elementary was awarded with the Supreme Rain Barrel Award. Addison’s uniquely designed rain barrel depicted the stages of a plant’s life and how water is an integral part of the life cycle. Ms. Barnwell’s class received top scores for creativity, artistic ability and teamwork. The Junior Water Warriors Award went to Ms. Jennie Dang’s third grade students from Murdock Elementary for demonstrating the greatest effort in teaching others about water conservation. Ms. Dang’s class created the campaign, “Murdock Makes a Change,” and promoted water conservation messages through songs, skits and persuasive papers. More than 200 children from nine Cobb County elementary and intermediate schools participated in the contest, which emphasized teamwork and creativity to learn about the value of water. 12 June/July 2011

Other participating schools included Brumby, Ford, Nickajack, Powers Ferry, Riverside, Sedalia Park and Shallowford Falls. Teachers and students were given just over a month to build, design and complete their rain barrels, all while encouraging the rest of their respective student bodies to save water. Supplies to make and decorate the rain barrels were provided by CCMWA and Cobb County Water System. “Teaching our youth about water conservation is an important aspect of ensuring our resources are preserved for when we need them most,” said Kathy Nguyen, senior project manager of Cobb County Water System. “All participating students are winners because they were able to learn the value of water conservation in a fun and interactive way.” The waterSmartSM program was initiated by the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority in 2000 to educate their service area residents of all ages about the importance of indoor and outdoor water conservation and to help encourage sustainable, year-round conservation, regardless of climate conditions. Kennesaw State University Leads with Academy for Inclusive Learning and Social Growth By Diana Schwartz Launched in 2009, the Academy for Inclusive Learning and Social Growth marked May 11 with their first graduates. The pilot program provides an inclusive college experience to students with developmental disabilities that often limit intellectual achievement and make transitioning from high school to traditional employment opportunities challenging. As director of this program, East Cobb resident, Dr. Harry Stern, has worked to develop the program with a Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities 3- year rolling grant and the University of Georgia system’s support. Dr. Harry Stern, director of KSU’s Academy says, “The incredible support of the administration and faculty has been inspirational. This diverse and inclusive program has been both welcomed and encouraged.” ssDr. Harry Stern

Stern continues, “As the program continues to grow, plans for 2012 call for enrolling additional students in the Academy. Although KSU is the first in Georgia to develop a program like this one, one of our goals is to collaborate with colleges from across the state to create a consortium dedicated to replicating the program throughout the University

System of Georgia’s 35 colleges and universities.” Harry credited Jill Sloan, the part time coordinator, with greasing the wheels of progress. “Her enthusiasm and tenacity has seen us through some tough times, but being able to bring this opportunity has been a dream for many families and to have gotten the first group through is quite an accomplishment. Harry added that “the attitude at Kennesaw about the program was most amazing; from the President to the Provost and every other program director, full support was there from the get-go.” Stern and Sloan created a community advisory panel of 30 executives and transition specialists. The strength of the program comes from “person-centered planning”, which charts the course of interests of each participant and works to prepare students with job shadowing on campus. Campus mentors help these students navigate around the campus and the academics. Social mentoring helps bridge the traditional and disabled communities while encouraging vital social skills needed to be successful. Beyond on-campus employment, a recent graduate has been offered a position at an area pre-school. Those opportunities secure support for both the UGA system and the community. On the horizon for fall of 2011 are plans for inclusive living arrangements on campus that will allow students to be able to live in dorms like traditional students. East Cobb Author Brings Love of Reading to Students Bedtime stories are a timehonored tradition for parents and children everywhere, but seldom are they the launching point for a successful career. Back in 1994, that is exactly where East Cobb author Diane Z. Shore found herself. As Shore was putting her then 2-year-old daughter to bed, she told an off the cuff story of a child who visited the doctor and ssDiane Z. Shore ended up with a sticker stuck to her tongue, loosely based on her daughter’s doctor’s appointment earlier that day. Weaving the simple event into a silly rhyming tale told in the voice of Sylvester the Cat elicited peals of laughter from Shore’s daughter, and set her wheels in motion. “I thought, if she likes it, I’m sure the whole world would love it,” said Shore. The former accountant put pen to paper and has spent the last 16 years honing her craft and publishing children’s books and short stories in magazines like Highlights for Children. But this is no Cinderella fairytale; Shore has dedi-

cated herself to her writing career and found out the hard way that publishing a book is no easy task. She received hundreds of rejection letters and dedicated hours and hours to improving her writing before seeing her name in print. “As I tell students (at school speaking engagements), writing is like playing a sport or an instrument: the more you practice, the better you get,” said Shore. But, all that hard work is paying off. Shore published her first book and Children’s Choice Award Winner, BUS-ASAURUS BOP in 2003 and hasn’t stopped. Her eighth book, This is the Game, was published this spring and several more are already slated for production. Shore isn’t one to sit back and bask in the excitement of a new book though. Instead, she’s on the road, visiting elementary schools around the county to share her love of reading and writing with students. She treats the kids to excerpts from a few of her most popular titles, including How to Drive Your Sister Crazy. Published in 2008 and the first in a series, this book is perhaps nearest to Shore’s heart as it was inspired by her son and daughter. About the series, Shore said, “They’re fiction though, of course, they could be non-fiction at my house.” For more about Shore, including her tour schedule, visit her website at dianezshore.com.

Handi-Crafts Help Family Raise Health Care Funds By Carmen Abernathy time that passes, the more difficult it is for Ellie. She will eventually have to go to liquid, pureed food if this is not addressed.” The NF condition has also left Ellie with double vision, which is a result of her eyes being out of alignment as well. She hopes to one day correct this condition, but the main push now is to correct her jaw.

ssJan and Ellie Karlsen are shown with quilted purses from their Ellie & Jan Handi-crafts collection.

Ellie Karlsen has spent most of her 20 years waiting. Diagnosed with a disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) at an early age, Ellie had to wait until she had full facial growth before she could have surgery for the skeletal defect. At 18, Ellie and her family begin preparations for the much needed surgery. Now Ellie finds herself once again playing the waiting game. Because this orthognathic procedure is an exclusion in her family’s insurance policy, the operation, which will be a minimum of $40,000 and can go as high as $80,000, is not covered. So fund raising becomes a family affair. Jan Karlsen, Ellie’s mother, is quick to point out that Ellie’s surgery is not cosmetic. “The surgery is totally for function,” she says. “Ellie’s current situation is that her lower jaw is out of alignment severely to the left of her upper jaw, which makes it difficult for her to eat. Through hard economic times and lost jobs, the Karlsens kept their $1,200 per month COBRA policy paid to ensure that Ellie could have her surgery when the time was right. When the surgery was denied in March 2010, the family did not take no for an answer. Jan and Rich (Ellie’s dad) contacted the insurance company’s medical director, the state of Georgia insurance commissioner’s office, the state of Tennessee insurance commissioner’s office (their policy is from that state), several foundations, and pro bono avenues. Rich even contacted Oprah -twice. No doors opened for Ellie, a Pope High School graduate who is now studying nursing at Chattahoochee Tech. The goal is to schedule the surgery for Fall 2011, and the family plans to raise the funds through craft shows and donations. Because Ellie and Jan love to sew, they began Ellie & Jan Handi-crafts. Their wares include quilted purses, microwave bags for vegetables, pillow cases, adult clothing protectors, walker carry-alls, and much more. These items are for sale at the Woodstock Market during the upcoming summer months and the Mt. Bethel UMC Ribbons & Holly show in November. At the urging of Jan’s mom and a friend, the Karlsens also set up a fund to accept donations for Ellie’s surgery. There are three ways to donate: 1) Check donation can be made to Account# 6657420755, Wells Fargo Bank, 3601 Sandy Plains Rd., Mariettta, GA 30062. Tax receipts are available. Sara Brooks at the bank serves as the contact: 770/420-0271. 2) Online donation can be made on http://helponeofourown.org. Scroll down to current cases and then to Ellie Karlsen. 3) 501 C-3 tax deductible donation. Check payable to Metro Christian Center and note Ellie Karlsen surgery. Mailing address is Metro Christian Center, PO Box 847, Woodstock, GA 30188. The Karlsens ask for prayers for their daughter. “I believe in the power of prayer,” says Jan. “Please pray that we find a way to make this surgery happen.” Contact the Karlsens for questions about donations or special craft orders at janetlynek@aol.com or 770-578-4521.

Kell High School Alumn and Now Steeler’s Player Presents Youth Football Camp Kell High School All-Star, GA Tech Alum and Steelers’ running back Jon Dwyer will host three days of football fundamentals and fun at his youth football camp, June 16-18. Dwyer and his NFL colleagues and fellow GT Yellow Jackets teammates will work with 300 youth, ages 5-18, at his alma mater, Kell High School located in northeast Cobb County.

earned him the ACC Player of the Year Award in 2008. Dwyer also received multiple First Team Selections, was named a Parade All-American and a candidate for the Doak Walker Award which is given to the nation’s best running back.

Campers will learn NFL style drills, form stretching techniques, strength and conditioning training, offense and defense position instruction, and team concepts for each age group and skill level from Dwyer’s experienced camp coaching staff. The key component of the camp, however, is the mentoring segments, which will encourage the campers to make good choices, reject negative influences and live a healthy, positive lifestyle.

Jacob’s Ladder Neurodevelopment School and Therapy Center specializes in educating children diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD, Autism, PDD and Asperger’s among others. The Jonathan Dwyer Neurofeedback Lab is one of only five in the world, and has proven to have significant long term effects on young patients with ADD/ADHD and Autism. “There are so many misconceptions about ADD/ADHD and my goal is to share my story as an example and encourage others. I want to do what I can so that kids in similar situations have the opportunity to learn and build their confidence. With the proper tools and support system you can overcome and succeed, if you work hard.”

ssJon Dwyer

As a Georgia native, Dwyer is well known for his football accomplishments on the field. But one of his biggest challenges came in the classroom, when he was diagnosed with ADD at an early age. With the support of great teachers and coaches, he was able to succeed in spite of his diagnosis.

Dwyer went on to attend GA Tech after being highly recruited as a result of his stellar football career at Kell where he was named Georgia Player of the Year. While at Tech, Dwyer continued to excel and earned a 3.6 GPA, in part because of the school’s innovative technology for its ADD/ADHD students. In addition to the mentoring outreach to the young campers on the field, the camp will also benefit two worthy causes, the Kell High School Youth Football Program and an innovative Neurofeedback lab at Jacoo’s Ladder Neurodevelopmental School and Therapy Center in Roswell.

The camp will provide breakfast snacks, lunch, and drinks, and autographs from their NFL heroes. Georgia Symphony Orchestra Unveiled Boundaries stretch for the orchestra formerly known as “Cobb” Symphony Chorus was then established in 2007 with 100 members now under its acclaimed Director, Bryan Black. And, in 2007 the Cobb Symphony Orchestra also introduced its Big Band Jazz Ensemble led by saxophonist Sam Skelton to sold out audiences. As it continues to grow and increase its repertoire, programs, and audiences, the GSO is extending it’s reach to other venues throughout Georgia. Cobb County remains it’s birthplace and home. The public is invited to hear the Georgia Symphony Orchestra this summer. Three patriotic concerts are scheduled throughout Cobb County: ssMichael Alexander, Music Director, Georgia Symphony Orchestra

Georgia now has a home-grown namesake orchestra. The Georgia Symphony Orchestra is the new name for a wellestablished organization, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, that has been playing music in the state for 60 years. The name change was announced to applause on May 7 at a finale concert by the former Cobb Symphony Orchestra. The newly named GSO has a reputation for stretching musical boundaries, and is now ready to stretch its geographical boundaries. In its premier season, the Georgia Symphony Orchestra will continue to push the limits of what is expected from a regional orchestra. Negotiations are ongoing to expand the number of concerts presented outside of Cobb County and an agreement is in place to establish a residency at Reinhardt University’s Falany Performing Arts Center in North Georgia. In addition to playing classics, the orchestra champions new works and engages in creative collaborations with other musicians. It recently commissioned a world premier work. In the past six years, the organization has added big-band jazz and a full chorus. It also launched the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the largest of its kind in the Southeast. “Within the last six years, the organization has taken major leaps forward,” Music Director Michael Alexander said. “Given this growth, we are excited to continue to expand our programs as the Georgia Symphony Orchestra.” In 2011 the Cobb Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 60th anniversary, growing from a small group of classical music lovers in a living room in Marietta to an organization of more than 1,000 people led by Music Director Michael Alexander. In just the past six years with Alexander’s vision and leadership, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra has created and added the Georgia Symphony Youth Orchestra, consisting of over 400 student musicians from throughout Georgia. Bank of North Georgia Spreads the Love make more than 63,978 sandwiches for children in metro Atlanta (with approximately two ounces of PB&J spread on each sandwich). Creamy peanut butter was the clear winner over crunchy and the bank received more grape jelly than any other flavor. Since 2008, Bank of North Georgia has collected more than 10 tons of peanut butter and jelly through this meaningful community relations effort. This year, they brought it to a whole new level by inviting the Bank of Coweta team to participate as well as 17 partner schools. As a Partner in Education with Mt. Bethel Elementary School, the Bank of North Georgia, located on Johnson Ferry Road, enlisted help from Mt. Bethel Elementary School in Marietta/East Cobb. The Center for Family Resources received 21 jars of PB&J from the Chastain Road branch in Kennesaw, 100 jars from the Marietta Square branch and 282 jars from our partner school, Marietta Middle School. Total: 403 jars of PB&J. ssPictured above are Mt. Bethel students Ashton Baker, Liam Collins, Kate Wisneski, Alexa Weston, and Abby Foy.

Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta, two divisions of Synovus Bank, had tremendous success in hosting their 4th Annual Peanut Butter and Jelly Food Drive to benefit children served by 30 local food pantries that are located near their 46 branches in metro Atlanta. The ‘Spread the Love’ PB&J Food Drive was held from April 2 (National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day) to May 14. In total, Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta collected 5,899 jars at 7,997 pounds, which is 4 tons of PB&J. That is enough to

MUST Ministries in Marietta received 62 jars of PB&J from the Galleria branch, 88 jars from the Johnson Ferry branch, 38 jars from the students and parents from the Georgia Ballet, and 550 jars from Mt. Bethel Elementary (which is the second largest amount BNG collected from a partner school) for a total of 738 jars of PB&J. The school that collected the most PB&J was Chrysalis Experiential Academy in Roswell with 800 jars. Bank of North Georgia and Bank of Coweta have dynamic community relations programs that are designed to continually reaffirm their longstanding commitment to helping others in the communities they serve.

Please include a picture with your entry. Animal/Breed: Norwegian Forest Cat Age & Gender: Approx. 10 yrs. old; male Favorite Food: Chicken pieces, lunchmeat, most moist canned food Favorite Person: Max - 18 year old son - will miss him dearly when he leaves for LSU in the fall Best Trick: Each morning either pushes Mom’s eye open with paw or bats Mom’s cheeks simultaneously with both paws to wake her to feed him his morning moist food. Turn Ons: Loves to go outside and wait for Max to return from school each day. He instinctively knows the time to go to the door to ask to be let out. He also loves short car rides. Dad takes him to the bank’s drive-thru and the teller gets a kick out of seeing him. He will ride on your lap the entire time. Turn Offs: He does not like to have his beautiful long fur brushed and lets you know. Favorite Toy: He loves a 30 year old blanket but will only make “biscuits” with it and suck on it when no one is around. He usually does it in the middle of the night and we will find the blanket all twisted up in hallway in the morning. He is a celebrity and was featured in the Cat Fancy boxed calendar in 2008 playing with the blue blanket! Last seen: Sleeping in hallway laundry basket where he can sniff all of his family’s lovely smells contently.

Our Pal’s Place Offers Summer Camps for Pet Lovers

Our Pal’s Place (O.P.P.) is an animal advocate organization with a pet adoption facility and learning center. Their mission is to rescue animals from “death row” in county shelters and adopt them into “forever homes”. In addition, their Learning Center offers fun, informative education programs like Camp O.P.P. to teach solutions to current animal welfare issues. All of their work at O.P.P. is performed with a positive attitude and in a fun environment. They are licensed by the Department of Agriculture, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit and incorporated. Their pet adoption facility and learning center are located at 4508 Canton Road, Marietta, 30066

and compassion towards all animals and practice what they learn with hands-on activities with rescued dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and birds.

Camp O.P.P. (Our Pal’s Place ) is a fun-filled, week-long camp where kids participate in activities that teach kindness and compassion to the animals. Each day starts with interactive learning activities and concludes with hands-on experience with the animals to practice what was learned. Camp O.P.P. is designed to give kids hands-on experience with rescued animals. For this reason, the first day of each camp week is spent learning safety and the first topic addressed of each camp day is reviewing safety rules. Our Pal’s Place is offering three different camp programs rotating throughout the summer :

> Helping Animals - The goal of this camp is to learn about animals in need and how to help them. Throughout the week, campers will choose different dogs to spend time with, learn about their life experiences and determine how to improve their future. The afternoons will be filled with arts and crafts: designing t-shirts, creating posters, making toys and much more! This camp has an “extra” day if campers want to participate in taking towels and toys to animals in a county shelter.

> Kindness & Compassion to All Animals - Our Pal’s Place signature camp returns for its fourth year! This week long camp provides kids the opportunity to learn kindness

> Understanding Dogs - The goal of this camp is to teach youth how to listen to and communicate with dogs. We “listen” to dogs by reading their body language and understanding their breed characteristics. We “communicate” with dogs by using positive training techniques. Campers will choose different dogs throughout the week with whom they will listen and communicate. The week will conclude with a talent show for the parents.

All proceeds from camp fees go to housing homeless animals in our pet adoption facility. For more information about Camp OPP, visit www.ourpalsplace.org or call Gigi, OPP’s Executive Director, at 678-361-7623.

Recipe of the Month: Cornmeal Peach Cake With the peach harvest season upon us, East Cobbers should be enjoying the bounty of peaches available this summer. Each year, Georgia produces over 2.6 million cartons, or more than 63 million pounds of sweet-tasting peaches between mid-May and mid-August. More than 40 varieties of peaches are grown in Georgia, and the state’s proximity to major markets throughout the Southeast allows the fruit to be regularly delivered fresh-off-the-tree to grocers all over the region. Peach County native Gena Knox has devoted a section of her latest cookbook, “Southern My Way: Simple Recipes, Fresh Flavors” to recipes featuring sweet Georgia peaches. While the cookbook features more than 250 pages of seasonal recipes streamlined for busy lives, Gena feels a special passion for the Peach State’s favorite fruit. Here is one of those peach recipes, Cornmeal Peach Cake:

Cornmeal Peach Cake Not overly sweet, but absolutely delicious, this cake is best served with fresh whipped cream or ice cream. The cornmeal lends a rich golden hue. Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 55 minutes Yields: 12 servings 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ cup yellow cornmeal 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 1 cup canola or vegetable oil ¼ cup fresh orange juice 2 ½ teaspoons vanilla 3 fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (about 2 cups) ¼ cup sugar 1 ½ teaspoons sugar

Special equipment: 10-cup bundt pan FIRST Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and flour a 10-cup bundt pan. In a medium bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt; set aside. NEXT Using an electric mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer, beat eggs, sugar, and oil until smooth. Slowly beat in orange juice. One cup at a time, add flour mixture until incorporated. Stir in vanilla. In a medium bowl, toss peaches, sugar and cinnamon. LAST Pour half of batter into bundt pan, top with peaches and finish with remaining batter. Bake for 55 minutes. Let cool in pan on wire rack for 15 minutes. Remove from pan, place on wire rack, and let cool completely. From my kitchen For a super-moist cake, you can add an additional cup of peaches and bake a few minutes longer. The cake may not have a neat, uniform shape, but I love the gooey center.

The Chef’s Culinary Tour will be held on Thursday, June 9th, 2011, at the Pavillion in East Cobb. Joining the effort are top chefs from several of Atlanta’s and Marietta’s acclaimed restaurants to includeTwo Urban Licks, ONE. midtown kitchen, Parish, ROOM, Paper Mill Grill, Ritter’s, Gabriel’s, Henry’s Louisiana Grill and Sam’s BBQ1.

“We are so excited to have the support of some of the best chefs in the state to include Food Network Star finalist, Justin Balmes,” said Jinger Robins, Executive Director of SafePath. “The economy has suffered terribly in the last two years, yet the children and families who benefit from SafePath’s critical services are still in need. Cocktails will start at 6pm, and the tasting will begin at 7pm. For only $75 per individual, guests will be able to interact with the executive chefs out of the kitchen and sample different tastes. The Chef’s Culinary Tour will include dancing featuring the music of PRIME. “The Chef’s Culinary Tour is sure to be the ultimate food social of the year,” said Chef Alex Reethof, event chair and East Cobb resident. “People may not realize that SafePath is the organization that is there helping those victims of child abuse that we hear about on the news. The services they provide are vital to those families and our community. If you have a passion for food and fun, my hope is that you will join us in supporting SafePath and the work that they do.” SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center, Inc. is a private 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children who have been abused. SafePath’s mission is to reduce the trauma to children and their families by offering a comprehensive, professional and child-friendly approach to allegations of child abuse. Safety Tips for Summer Break

Coach’s Corner

By Lieutenant Destiny Davidson, Cobb County Police Department, Precinct 4

With Peter Allen

As we approach summer vacation, family travel and outdoor activities will increase. This is the perfect time to make you aware that Governor Deal recently approved changes to certain Georgia laws pertaining to child safety restraints and rules of the road concerning bicyclists. Effective July 1, when travelling in a motor vehicle, children will be required to be properly restrained in a child passenger safety restraint device until they reach 8 years of age. The current law pertains to children until they reach the age of 6. For your older children who have outgrown a traditional safety seat, this will mean a booster seat, which is simply a device designed to elevate the child to the proper height so that the seat belt will fit as it is intended. If you would like more information on recommended practices including those that go above the minimum legal requirements pertaining to child safety restraints please visit. http://www.gahighwaysafety.org/ docs/2011nhtsacarseat.pdf There are numerous locations around metro Atlanta where you can have your child’s safety seat inspected to ensure that you are following both the law and best practices. In Cobb County you can have your child safety seat inspected at the Child Safety Seat Inspection Station located within the Cobb County Safety Village at 1220 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta, GA 30008. For appointments call 770-514-2369. You can also visit the website of Safe Kids of Georgia www. safekidsgeorgia.org to find other locations that offer child safety seat inspections. This site also offers a wealth of information on preventing unintentional child hood injuries associated with motor vehicle crashes, bicycling accidents, burns, drownings, and much more. Other changes in Georgia law pertain to bicyclists on public roadways. Effective July 1, where a bicycle lane is provided on the roadway, the operator of a motor vehicle shall yield to a person operating a bicycle in a bicycle lane. In addition, anytime a driver is attempting to overtake and pass a bicyclist travelling in the same direction, the driver will be required to move over at least 3 feet until safely past the overtaken bicycle. And while not a new law, it is important to remember that no person under the age of 16 years can operate or be a passenger on a bicycle on a highway, bicycle path, or sidewalk without wearing a bicycle helmet. And while not required by law, It is strongly advisable that bicyclist of all ages wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.

for the business of life

Are You In Business For Your Self? If you own a business, have a job, are unemployed or retired, and you receive and spend money, the answer is, “Absolutely yes.” Why? Because in today’s world your whole life is a business. If you are an owner of a business: You either bought it or created it to sell products and/or services and you conduct the business assuming full control, responsibility and risk. If you are employed or contracted by a company: You are responsible for fulfilling the tasks and mission for which you were hired. You are using your skills and talents. Therefore, you assume part of the risk. If you are unemployed and are seeking employment: You’re in the business of marketing and identifying and selling your skills and talents. If you are retired: You are responsible for using your skills, talents and interest to create a life of fulfillment based on how you spend your time and money Your whole life can benefit from applying the principles of operating a successful, productive business. Your life has a beginning and end, just like a business. It goes through various stages as it matures, and you have 24 hours each day to manage and create the life you want. It would be to your benefit to change the way you look at all your relationships. An example is the way you view your employment relationship. Rather than thinking of yourself as being an employee, see yourself as a business person with the perception of, “I am selling my unique skills and talents to the company to fulfill the tasks and mission for which I was hired.” The benefit of this perception is that it will make you stronger. Thinking as a business person, you become more aware of continually improving your skills, talents and interest so that you are always marketable. When the time comes for you to quit, get laid off or be ‘downsized,’ you then become an entrepreneur to create and build a mechanism to market you, your skills and talents to an employer or to create your own business. The same will hold true when the time comes for you to create a joyful fulfilling transition into semi- or full retirement. Your whole life, as with a business, has similar categories and tasks, things to plan, create, manage and improve: Career/Business, Money Management, Health, Family, Social Relationships (personal friends/significant other and business associates), Personal and Professional Mastery, and Physical Environment (fun and recreation). As a business, life and retirement coach, I assist you into breaking free of the barriers and transition into the results you desire. I will guide you in your journey by gaining clarity in your purpose, goals and vision, uncover and identify the obstacles and challenges. I provide processes that will enable you to move through them effectively so that you can create the business and life you desire with passion, prosperity, balance, and fulfillment. Call me at 770-977-2232 with any questions or comments. Visit my website www.breakingfreecoaching.com where you will find several articles on related topics. Pete Allen Purpose, Passion & Prosperity

Dermatology Affiliates Welcomes Dr. Erickson to East Cobb As you shed your winter layers for skin-baring shorts and bathing suits this summer, it’s also a good time to get a check-up for your skin. This process is now easier than ever, because Dermatology Affiliates recently added Corinne Erickson, M.D. to its practice.

ssCorinne Erickson, MD

Known for their focus on patient care, the physicians at Dermatology Affiliates see patients for any condition impacting skin, nails or hair. They specialize in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. They also treat acne, psoriasis, eczema and removing warts or moles.

Preventing skin cancer is what first attracted Dr. Erickson to dermatology. When she was five years old, her grandmother passed away from metastatic melanoma and over the years she witnessed many family friends struggle with this diagnosis. “I am passionate about educating patients on how to prevent this tragic disease, how to identify concerning moles and find the cancers as early as possible,” said Dr. Erickson. Dr. Erickson recommends that everyone should be aware of their skin and to take time once a month to look at it for new or changing moles. According to Erickson, 75 percent of melanomas are first noticed by the patient or the patient’s partner. “By performing self skin checks and seeing a dermatologist for yearly exams and when anything new pops up, I truly believe we can bring an end to the skin cancer epidemic,” she added.

Learn more about your risk of heart disease, stroke, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease and other serious conditions. WellStar’s Know Your Heart program offers a variety of personalized preventive screening packages. All testing is performed by registered technologists, with test interpretations by board-certified WellStar physicians. Each participant receives a personalized report with test results, risk factor education, diet, weight and exercise recommendations.

Packages range from $75 to $299.

Dr. Erickson received her undergraduate degree at Stanford University and then completed her medical degree at University of Rochester and her residency at University of Maryland. “I love dermatology because whether I’m treating a teenager’s acne, a parent’s stubborn psoriasis, or a granddad’s basal cell cancer, the impact it has on their lives is often far more than skin deep. The skin is the largest organ, and the most visible, so when problems arise in the skin it often causes both physical and emotional stress,” said Dr. Erickson. “My job allows me to help take care of patients inside and out.” In addition to Dr. Erickson, the Dermatology Affiliates practice includes the following physicians: Rutledge Forney, M.D., Cynthia Abbott, M.D., Jennifer Burger, M.D., and Sumayah Taliaferro, M.D. Dermatology Affiliates also provides cosmetic and aesthetic treatments, such as Botox, fillers, chemical peels and microdermabrasion, as well as numerous laser procedures. Dermatology Affiliates is located at 4939 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 104-A, across from the Parkaire Shopping Center. For more information, visit www.dermatologyaffiliates.com or call 404-816-7900. Yes. We could be doing yoga. This invigorating series of postures and breathing techniques is rooted in Indian philosophy. I know some of its benefits from taking classes years ago. To learn more, I spoke with two yoga teachers who live and work in East Cobb and Marietta. Rachel Goldberg is co-owner of beyoga on the ssLisa Jones Marietta Square. She and her partner Julie Eubanks started the studio in December 2010. Lisa Jones, owner of Fitness Yoga with Lisa, teaches at LA Fitness and Olde Towne Athletic Club. Both Rachel and Lisa went through over 200 hours of intense training to get certified. According to Lisa, runners can suffer from back and knee pain, sore feet, and tightness in the hips and hamstrings. During a mile run, your heel can strike the ground 1,000 times. Each strike is three or four times your body weight. “All of that pounding, compressing, and shortening of the muscles leads to excess tightness and creates imbalances in the body,” Lisa says. “We have a lot of runners (in our studio),” Rachel says. She got into yoga herself because of knee pain related to her running. She also taught cycle for 12 years and says that doing only one form of exercise can lead to injury. She stresses the importance of finding balance-- in our workout routine and the rest of our lives. Runners can prevent injury by lengthening the muscles with yoga. As Rachel says, running tightens the muscles. “If you tighten something enough eventually it’s going to snap,” she says. She also points out that yoga is not just stretching. She estimates that 70% of a yoga class is “working on your core.” So yoga can help you find balance, prevent injury, and make you stronger. You can also lose weight doing it, which Lisa calls an “added bonus.” That’s not all yoga can do for you. Both Lisa and Rachel talked about yoga’s ability to relieve stress. “As you learn how to breathe calmly,” Lisa says, “you will learn to move calmly in your daily life… you respond from a place of center and balance without being reactive, or stressed, or mean or grumpy. That’s yoga.” Rachel adds that “some of the postures… the way you place your hands and feet… it’s just so grounding. It just makes you feel more stable.” Yoga also fosters a sense of community. If you are just starting out, it pays to get a teacher and go to a class. “You get a lot of energy from other people,” Rachel says. Lisa says that while books and DVD’s are a good choice for advanced yoginis, an instructor can give novices hands-on correction to get the most out of the poses. She can also tell you if you are misaligned. “You can’t get that from a video,” Rachel says.

Taste of Italy – OLLI’s Summer Social Event Having a great time with friends is a core ingredient to the success of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University. Three times a year, OLLI seeks to bring together all those people who have enjoyed being a part of the OLLI family and invite those who are age 50 and older to see what the program has to offer. OLLI’s next event is the Taste of Italy Social on Monday, June 13th, at KSU Center. “There is nothing like a summer social to put a little spice into our annual calendar,” said Michelle Girage, OLLI Assistant Director. She said, aside from the delicious Italian feast, there will be live music provided by the Society Express Band who will be making their debut to the OLLI crowd “This band is certain to have everyone on their feet dancing before the night is over,” Michelle said. Past socials have drawn about 250 seasoned adults out for an evening of great food, dancing and a “whole lotta fun” with new and old friends. “With so many programs going on throughout the year, the socials have turned into a homecoming style event which allows us to visit with everybody and catch up on the happenings in their lives,” Michelle said. “It’s a great mix of laughter, music and fun!” The cost is only $7 per person and includes dancing, catered dinner and wonderful conversation. Doors open at 5:45pm and dinner is served from 6-7pm. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 770-423-6765 or you can register online at ccpe.kennesaw.edu/olli. Payment is required when reservations are made to secure seating. Free parking is available.

Senior Swimmer Goes for Gold By Anne Alexander For those of us who have ever backed down from a challenge because we might think ourselves too old, Sue Ottosen is an inspiration. The sixty-eight year old artist and owner of a framing business in East Cobb is preparing for her fourth National Senior Olympics Games to be held June 16 – 30 in Houston, Texas. A former art teacher and accomplished cellist, Sue never considered herself an athlete; ssSue Ottosen however, an ad for the National Senior Olympics motivated her to consider becoming a serious contender. Sue competed in her first state meet in 2004 in Warner Robbins, Georgia. While husband Bob photographed, Sue surprised herself by winning a gold medal! While training on her own, typically at the Kennestone Aquatic Center, various trainers would give her pointers on ways she could improve. The hard work and determination paid off because the next year, Sue claimed three gold medals at the Georgia State Senior Olympic Games. This qualified her to compete at the National Games in Pittsburgh where Sue

was delighted to be “treated like a real Olympian” – a nearly overwhelming experience with numerous paparazzi snapping pictures of her at the finish line. Sue has won medals and honors from numerous competitions. Not only has Sue earned medals for her swimming, but she has also placed in the P.T. Solutions Women’s Triathlon in Acworth for the last four years. Sue also competes in shot put and discus at the Georgia State Senior Olympic Games. It’s never too late according to Sue Ottosen to “get up off your duff and start moving!” The National Senior Games Association was developed in 1985 with the purpose of promoting healthy lifestyles for seniors through education, fitness, and sports. It is a community-based member of the United States Olympic Committee and functions as a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit corporation. Participants who qualify for the National Games are responsible for their traveling expenses as well as some meals while at the games. Sue’s sponsors have been the 425 Antique Market Place, Barter Consultants International, and Empowerment Strategies Hypnotherapy. East Cobbers can help Sue finance her trip to the National Senior Olympic Games by becoming a sponsor or by making a tax deductible contribution to her at soheritage@ comcast.net . For more information about the National Senior Games Association Foundation, visit their website at www.nationalseniorgames.org.
