When you read this issue, the azalea bushes and cherry trees should be bursting with color against the beautiful blue Georgia sky. We’ll be serenaded by the sounds of chirping birds and whirring lawnmowers. Signs that spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. Ahhh, summer. . . School will be out soon and how will your children pass the lazy, hazy days of summer? This April issue features our 12th Annual Day Camp Guide. We have put together a comprehensive chart of day camps --as well as a few overnight camps--offered right here in East Cobb County and/or a short drive away. While day camp can help your children learn a better backhand in tennis, acquire a stronger stroke in swimming, or get in touch with nature, the true payoff of camp will be apparent when your child becomes a bit more self-reliant, self-sufficient, and self-confident. I’d like to dedicate this issue to my maternal grandmother, Mary Hoyes (1912-1992), I could not help thinking about her as I was putting the information on day camps together. As a camp director from 1970 to 1980, “Sunny” (her camp name) loved the outdoors and inspired the Girl Scout campers in her care to experience a sense of service and to value nature. As a camp professional, and as my grandmother, she taught me some valuable life lessons with her “sunny” disposition, her appreciation of what was real, genuine, and non-artificial in people as well as in

the world. There is no doubt her life inspired me to be self-reliant, self-sufficient, and self-confident. So, here’s to you, Grandma–- who showed me how to be the “happy camper” that I am today!
East Cobb Baseball was founded in 1985, when Guerry Baldwin, now the President of the organization, brought together a team of top players that had previously been organized solely by age or location. Mr. Baldwin decided kids should play at the level of their ability—better players should play with and against other better players. Since then, East Cobb Baseball [ECB] has grown to include 100 teams for players ages eight to eighteen. Altogether, the program has produced at least 150 professional players. Pictured on our front cover is the founder and owner of East Cobb Baseball, Guerry Baldwin. Each spring, East Cobbers, flock to Turner Field to watch the beloved Braves and enjoy the all-American sport of baseball. As they cheer for their favorite players, many do not realize that some of these very same players started right here in our own East Cobb backyard. For the past 27 years, East Cobb Baseball (ECB) has been training the area’s most promising young baseball athletes and leading them to success in both college and pro baseball on a state-of-theart, 30-acre baseball complex with eight perfectly manicured ballfields in Northeast Cobb County. Every summer, the East Cobb Baseball complex holds one of the biggest tournaments in all of amateur baseball for ages 17-and-under and 18-and-under. Major league and college scouts come to the event to recruit these young players.

East Cobber Nominated for Best Female Country Artist in Georgia Angela has performed more than 85 times at the top southeast music venues. She is a regular at The Strand Theatre, Hemingway’s in Marietta, Jimmy Mac’s, and Wild Bill’s. In fact, her most popular song, “I Wanna Ride the Bull”, has been turned into a line dance at Wild Bill’s.
Angela Reign is a little bit country and a little bit rock n’ roll, and she couldn’t be happier. Until two years ago, she was in management consulting earning a high income with childhood dreams of becoming a singer behind her.
Family support has made the transition easier on Angela. Her husband, Mike, is business manager of the band. “He’s as much a part of the band as anyone who plays an instrument, and we couldn’t do this without him,” adds Angela.
Then at a party, she was asked to sing with Stan Roberts, ex-Nashville guitarist. Roberts was so impressed by her talents that he offered to ss Angela Reign come out of retirement to be her guitarist. After discussions with her family, she decided to pursue her dreams as a singer and see how far it would take her.
An East Cobb resident, she also sings the National Anthem at their son’s 8th grade football games at Pope High School and is a cameo performer with their daughter’s school choir at Tritt Elementary. Angela grew up singing in choir and musical theater, but chose college instead of Broadway. She was a high school biology teacher before becoming a business consultant. When asked what advice she would give to others who would like to change course and pursue their dreams, she says that you can’t be afraid to fail.
And, boy, has it worked. Her first original single, cowritten with Roberts, was played on the Atlanta radio station 94.9 The Bull for six weeks because of listener votes. Angela formed a band and now performs regularly on the country circuit. Angela recently was nominated for Best Female Country Artist by the GA Music Awards. The awards will be presented in June.
“Even with the success with which we’ve been blessed in so short of time, we’ve stumbled along the way,” says Angela. “We keep listening to what the fans are telling us and we keep getting back on stage and entertaining crowds. No success comes without hard work and a willingness to hear ‘no’ a lot more than you hear ‘yes.’”
“I didn’t as much pick country as it picked me,” she shares. “I did some early recording that ended up on country radio. I love country, but anyone who’s seen me live knows we’re as much a rock band as we are country. I am trying to find the intersection of the two, and our upcoming CD is a good example of this style.”

Environmental Education Still Relevant for Schools By Irene Barton, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs Budgets, classroom sizes, Common Core Standards, QBE formulas, SPLOST projects…the issues that our schools must interpret and integrate into their planning can seem overwhelming at times. So, why do our schools continue with PTA-sponsored programs that focus on recycling, gardening, no carpool idling campaigns and waste-free lunches? Because PTAs and environmental clubs and their parent volunteers recognize that these programs and activities can and do contribute to improving student success. Teachers and administrators recognize this as well and are supportive of the efforts. For instance, Sope Creek Elementary was recently awarded a grant from Lowe’s that will be used to create a large Children’s Learning Garden. Principal Martha Whalen stated to the press that “we are thrilled with how this grant will enhance our curriculum …” School gardens often have every grade participating in some aspect of planning and caring for the beds. These activities encompass science, math and reading at a minimum. Hands-on activities like these help children retain more information and essentially make learning more impactful than just talking about building a garden ever could be. On-campus recycling programs for paper and aluminum not only teaches students how to be better stewards of natural resources, but also serve a practical purpose in lowering the school district’s waste disposal fees while raising money for the sponsor organization. It has been estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school! And that means disposal fees in a time when literally every dollar counts for our district. So, a PTA-sponsored “Waste Free Lunch Day” has environmental benefits as well as practical effects. What is a “Waste Free Lunch”? These programs favor the use of reusable food
containers, drink containers, utensils, and napkins. They discourage the use of disposable packaging, such as prepackaged foods, plastic bags, juice boxes and pouches, paper napkins and disposable utensils. Not only is trash removed from the waste stream, but families save money by not constantly purchasing packaging items. From third grade science standards on conservation and pollution to high school courses on environmental studies and ecology, environmental education programs support and augment classroom learning. And while there will be many wonderful one-time programs to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, know that PTA members throughout the 35 schools in East Cobb are working on implementing and growing handson, meaningful environmental educational programs for our students, our schools and our globe all year long. Irene has lived in the Indian Hills subdivision for the past 16 years with her husband, Steve, and two children: her daughter, Casey, a sixth grader at Dickerson Middle School; and son, Alex, a third grader at East Side Elementary School.

East Cobb Mom Starts Tennis Blog A blog for tennis parents has been created by East Cobb resident and tennis mom, Lisa Stone, who is hoping to share her experiences in the grueling world of Junior Tennis. The website is http://parentingaces.wordpress. com. The mother of three is a certified fitness instructor and avid tennis player. Through her children, she has developed a working knowledge of theatre, horses, and drums. Her own junior tennis experience and now that of her son’s led her to create ParentingAces. “I’m enlisting the help and expertise of several tennis professionals including former NCAA champions, professional coaches (from both the ATP and WTA tours as well as top-level junior coaches), former professional players, and junior tennis tournament directors so that we parents can better navigate through the murky waters,” says Lisa. St. Andrew United Methodist Church of Marietta /East Cobb began celebrating more than the arrival of a new year on January 1, 2012. The Canton Road congregation also began celebrating 50 years of doing the Lord’s work, which will culminate with Homecoming for its 50th anniversary on April 29, 2012. “On Sunday, April 29, 2012, 50 years will have passed since a small group of dedicated Methodists first gathered at Blackwell School to begin their new church,” said Rev. Mack Riley, senior pastor at St. Andrew United Methodist Church. “We look forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with Homecoming services on April 29.” “On Sunday, April 29, 2012, St. Andrew will welcome former St. Andrew Pastor, Dr. Gerald Thurman, to deliver our message on the 50th anniversary of the church’s original worship services,” said Rev. Mack Riley. “After serving as pastor here at St. Andrew in the 1980s, Rev. Thurman went on to serve other churches and retired as District Superintendent of Gainesville District.” “St. Andrew will host only one service that morning, beginning at 10 a.m.,” said Rev. Angie Crummie, associate pastor. “We will then keep the celebration going with a special 50th anniversary dinner beginning at 11:30 a.m.” The cost of the Homecoming Dinner will be $6 for adults and $3 for children. The church welcomes everyone who wants to join congregation members for the dinner, but reservations must be made by calling the church office at 770926-3488 by noon on Friday, April 27. The reservation deadline is necessary to ensure that St. Andrew’s food preparation team has time enough to make adequate preparations to feed everyone. “Beginning on Sunday, May 6, St. Andrew will continue its 50th anniversary celebration with an old-fashion revival featuring evangelist Rev. Tom Atkins. Rev. Atkins will deliver the message at all three services on Sunday (8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 10:45 a.m.), as well as at evening services Sunday through Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. each night.
“St. Andrew United Methodist Church (UMC) takes pride in being a family of caring, nurturing followers of Jesus Christ who welcome all those seeking to know and grow in God’s service,” said Rev. Angie Crummie. “We plan to commemorate our first 50 years in this endeavor with a variety of special programs, worship services, and other activities. Church founders chose the name St. Andrew because the apostle Andrew is considered a “do-er,” doing the work of the Lord. The first sanctuary, completed in 1964, is now our Community Room. The Education Building opened in 1973, the present sanctuary was built in 1978, and our Keheley Center opened in 1999. Today, our church family has grown to include more than 350 families dedicated to doing the work of the Lord. Church members accomplish this through various ministries in which we hope all members of our congregation will become involved. These ministries include Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives, wellness ministries, the Appalachia Service Project, the Andrew Christian School in Haiti, and ministries for men, women, children, youth, and seniors. “We believe that every single person who we have the pleasure of welcoming into our church has a talent that is theirs through the grace of God,” Riley said. “We strive to help people discover and cultivate that talent in ways that glorify Him.” “We welcome everyone who wishes to become part of our church family and help us accomplish our mission,” Crummie said. “Whether a person wishes to serve on a church committee, volunteer to help beautify the sanctuary, work with the children or youth, or sing in the choir, we value each individual and look forward to embracing more members of our community into our church family.” The church is located at 3455 Canton Road in Marietta/East Cobb. Pope High School Foundation Raises Funds Vegas Style The Fourth Annual Greyhound Gala and Silent Auction was hosted by the Pope High School (PHS) Foundation last month at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel. The evening’s Las Vegas theme featured food, music and auction items such as electronics, jewelry, artwork and getaways. The event gave all the clubs and organizations at Pope an opportunity to raise money by donating silent auction items. The $25,000 raised went to nineteen different Pope High school clubs and projects covering academics, fine arts, and athletics.

Daniell Middle School Offers World-Class Education by Susan McCullough Ask Daniell Middle School Principal David Nelson what he’s most proud of at his school -- and then be prepared to take notes on the long list of student and faculty accomplishments. Mr. Nelson’s effusive personality is just part of the excitement being generated this year at this East Cobb school. The second-oldest middle school in Cobb, Daniell opened in 1965 as a junior ss David Nelson high, boasting a full-sized gymnasium, a concession stand now run by the PTSA, and a theater-style auditorium. With a $4 million SPLOST III construction project breaking ground earlier this year, the school will gain over 6,000 square feet that includes a new computer lab, larger cafeteria with renovated kitchen, new ceilings in most of the school, additional parking, and covered bus ramps. 85% of the school will undergo renovations in 2012. With approximately 1,000 students from seven feeder elementary schools and 75 faculty & staff members, Daniell is one of the largest middle schools in Cobb. With that many students from so many elementary schools, one might think the integration would take its toll on academics. In fact, just the opposite occurs at this Advanced Placement Certified School, where fully 33% of the students participate in Accelerated Content classes, 60% consistently make the Honor Roll, and the majority participate in the almost 20 extracurricular activities offered at the school, including Principal’s Advisory Board, PTSA Junior Board, Student Forum, Science Olympiad, and Keybuilders. In December, the Daniell Robotics Team placed first in the Wheeler Qualifier and moved up to compete in the Super Regionals on January 14. Nestled back from where winding Piedmont Road becomes busy Barrett Parkway, Daniell has worked hard to establish itself as part of the community. As Chris Shaw, faculty facilitator for the Student/Family/Community Leadership Team states, “It is important for us to bridge the gap between community and school: they go hand in hand. One affects the other in a positive way with time and effort.” The school shares a strong partnership with the PTSA, which easily surpassed its membership goal last fall, an example of the growing family involvement here. This year the PTSA worked with school administration to offer teacher grant incentives in support of the School Strategic Plan.

It starts with great parents and is enhanced by great teachers.” Daniell Middle School represents a diverse student population who cares about their community, their school, and being their best academically. As Principal Nelson observes, “With families from 33 countries, the diversity serves as our strength as our students truly understand how to work with a variety of cultures. Daniell students will be prepared to enter a workforce where they will be working with people from the now emerging, global economies such as China, India, Pakistan, and Brazil. Many of our students speak three and four languages.” Not only was 2011 the best in the school’s history academically, it was also one of the best in extracurricular activities. From breaking all 15 previous performance records in areas including the middle grades writing assessment to bringing home superiors for orchestra and band, Daniell students were at the top of their game. Daniell also had its highest year of Reading/English Language Arts scores ever: over 96% of students met or exceeded standards. “I am honored to be the principal of such an outstanding school which serves such incredible families, teaches so many incredible kids, and houses such incredible people who work with our kids,” says Mr. Nelson. “With continued support, we will remain committed to providing a world-class education! I am excited about our future and the possibilities we can build by working together.”
But just what makes the Daniell principal of five years the most proud? “It’s the increase in ownership we’ve seen from our stakeholders; specifically, it’s our students, families, and community. We have a much greater level of involvement, and that’s the main reason we’re seeing such continued improvement in our student achievement levels. . .Our stu-

Dickerson Middle School Student is Regional Spelling Bee Champ The Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) sponsored the District 2 Spelling Bee Competition on February 25. The winner (after 23 rounds) was Patrick Wu, son of Erik and Mei Lu Wu. Patrick is a seventh-grader from Dickerson Middle School in Cobb County. District 2 also included spelling bee champs from schools in Cherokee, Dawson, Forsyth, Pickens, Towns, Union and White counties. Marietta City Schools also competed. Last month, Patrick Wu, along with eight [GAE] districts’ spelling bee champs and the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) winners and runners-up competed in the state spelling bee. After a 20-round Spelling Bee which lasted to over 250 words, Simola Nayak from Henderson Middle School (Tucker ,GA ) was named the winner after spelling “tautologous”. Simola is 13 years of age and in the 8th grade. Simola will represent Georgia in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC in late May.

The store where he worked eventually became the #1 Papa John store out of 5,000 sites. So with a flair for restaurant management and his grandmother’s recipes, Yovchev decided to open Philippopolis Tavern in December, 2011. The restaurant name is derived from an ancient Bulgarian city, which is now known as Plovdiv.

Bulgarians favor the slow cooking of stews and soups. They also use fresh vegetables, particularly tomatoes, sweet red peppers, eggplant, and zucchini. Some of the entrees are moussaka, chicken or pork kavarma, and mixed sausage grill. “There are so many distinct tastes in our foods that customers can try different dishes when they visit for a whole new experience each time,” he says. Customer service is paramount to Yovchev. “My customer is my employer,” he states. “I want each customer who comes through my doors to leave with a smile.” Backing that up with fresh, made-from-scratch dishes, Yovchev also offers reasonable pricing and specials. Open daily, Philippopolis Tavern is a fairly quiet establishment for lunch and weeknight dinners. However, on Friday and Saturday nights, the tavern hosts live bands or a disc jockey.

Local Dog Parks Provide Plenty of Room for Dogs to Roam With the weather getting warmer, it’s nice to take your dog for a walk or run in a dog park. Dog parks provide a fenced in, off-leash dog area where well-behaved canine citizens can exercise, frolic, and play in a clean, safe area. Here are three area dog parks that cater to man’s best friend. The following Cobb County dog parks are open daily dawn until dusk and closed each Wednesday morning for maintenance: > Sweat Mountain Park 4346 Steinhauer Road, Marietta 30066 Named Best Dog Park in Summer by Atlanta Magazine. Cobb County’s first off-leash dog park officially opened on October 21, 2006. The dog park is located inside Sweat Mountain Park. There is an area for large dogs and an area for smaller dogs weighing 30 lbs. or less. The park has benches conveniently located for the dog owners to sit and enjoy watching their pets play. For information, contact the Eastern District Zone office at (770) 591-3160. > Pitner Road Dog Park 2450 Pitner Road, Acworth 30101 The Pitner Road Dog Park is comprised of two adjoining but separately-fenced play areas for off-leash dogs with approximately 2 acres of space for larger and one acre of space for smaller dogs. The dog lots have both openspace and shady, wooded areas with benched seating for dog owners. Each area has dog water fountains and “poop-mit” stations providing bags for owners to pick up after their pets. There is a gravel access road and parking lot with 50 parking spaces. A combination picnic shelter and restroom building (presently with four picnic tables) sits on a rise and overlooks the playground and dog lots. A multi-function playground for children ages 2 to 12 is between the picnic shelter and the dog lots and can be easily seen from the seating areas of both locations. Dog Park Rules & Regulations • Dog owner/handler is legally and financially responsible for the actions of their dog. • Park users and dog owners assume all risks related to dog park usage. • Children under the age of twelve (12) are not allowed inside the off-leash area, unless accompanied by an adult. • Parents should refrain from bringing toddlers and small children to the dog park. At no time will children be allowed to run with or chase after dogs in the park • Dogs must be licensed and vaccinated with tags displayed on the collar. • Limit of three (3) dogs per person per visit. • Dogs must be kept on a leash until inside the double-gated entry area. Enter the first gate with the leash on and remove it prior to entering the second gate. Do the reverse when leaving.

East Cobb Chiropractor and Cancer Survivor Writes Inspiring Autobiography Dr. Brad Schmidt, an East Cobb Chiropractor and resident, has written a book about his life titled Where Does the Fight Come From?/How I Survived Childhood Cancer. This book is a story of a childhood cancer survivor who fought tremendous odds to get to adulthood against a type of cancer with limited survival even under today’s statistics. This story is told from the patient’s point of view as Dr. Schmidt expresses the ss Dr. Brad Schmidt emotional, physical, and psychological challenges he experienced in order to overcome the many different obstacles in his life. As a a childhood cancer survivor, Dr. Schmidt fought a life-long battle with the after effects of surviving neuroblastoma, including three invasive surgeries, the development of scoliosis, leg and spinal bracing, and deficiencies in walking. As a baby, he was dealt a tremendous setback when the aftermath of his surgeries left him unable to stand or even walk. The doctors had informed his parents that he would at best be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Through his

remarkable drive and perseverance, Dr. Schmidt not only survived the operations and procedures that threatened his life, he later developed the ability to crawl, stand, and then walk of his own power. The aftermath of the fight with cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, and learning to walk was only the beginning of his challenges. As a young boy, he developed a case of scoliosis of the spine as a side effect of his surgeries and with this came another set of circumstances. The scoliosis left him moderately handicapped with a shorter left leg with limited use. Against the advice of the doctors, at the age of 10, Brad started hitting a racquetball around a court with his father in order to get some form of exercise. He started playing racquetball initially with his scoliosis brace on, and later shed the brace in order to pursue the sport. As he matured into adulthood, he became a state and nationally ranked player. With the doctors initially informing his parents that he may not even survive the surgeries and therapies to eradicate the neuroblastoma, Brad has survived the odds and endured the challenges. “This book, Where Does the Fight Come From?, is an inspiring story with the expressed message that the human body is capable of incredible healing and progression when incapacitated by illness. By sharing my struggles and achievements, I hope others will use it as a platform for motivation so that they can face their own individual challenges with a better outlook and understanding,” says Dr. Schmidt. Explore the private gardens and projects of Master Gardeners, all within the confines of east and central Cobb County. Also featured with this event is the Garden Party and Plant Sale, which will include local artisans and growers, children’s crafts, local organizations, and demonstrations. Master Gardeners will be on site at the gardens and the plant sale to answer any questions. Enjoy the unique styles and designs of seven different gardens, each with its own set of challenges and triumphs. Whether you simply want to take in the breathtaking beauty, get inspiration for your own landscape, or learn more about gardening, there’s something for everyone. This free event also includes Monarchs Over Georgia, the Plant Doctor Booth, Bee Keepers, and terrific demonstrations by Cobb Master Gardeners. The Jean and Elwood Wright Environmental Center is adjacent to the Garden Party location and will be open for tours. The CrossRoads Community Garden is also on the property for you to browse and learn about vegetable gardening. Our own Cobb Master Gardeners will help with a children’s craft at 11 and 2, creating a timely Mother’s Day gift. There will be face painting and a complimentary drink and snack for children under 10. Craft participants should be 10 and under and accompanied by an adult. Each session will be limited to 20 and there will be a $5.00 fee for materials.

She has been facilitating Study Skills Workshops out of her Chimney Lakes home for more than 15 years. Sterling Estates: New Neighbor, New Level Of Senior Living By John Tabellione The park-like setting with its walking trails and raised bed vegetable gardens also represents part of the overall strategy of Sterling Estates to offer maximum wellness options. The community will use the latest technology for exercise equipment specifically designed for seniors in its Wellness Room, and for its heated, indoor aerobic pool. Residents will also receive on-going six-month fitness assessments, as well as the benefit of cutting-edge technology that analyzes their fall risk index. Additional nursing care options will also be available. Two other areas where technology will enhance the quality of life at Sterling Estates are security and leisure activity. Emergency call systems, including pendants, pull cords and motion sensors will be state-of-the-art. Residents will have access to a top-flight media center, computer stations for personal use and training, plus overhead projection equipment to enable interactive games such as Wii.

By its very nature as a senior living community, it’s built on a premise and promise to be a good neighbor to its own residents and to those nearby.
“Our goal is to maintain and enhance our residents’ independence,” said Gill, adding, “We want to be good neighbors. We live here in Cobb County.” In that spirit of friendship, Gill said that private groups, such as homeowners associations will be welcome to use meeting room facilities and the pool for water aerobics.
Sterling Estates, a $22 million project, will feature 90 assisted living suites available in seven room designs averaging 515 square feet. It will also offer leases on twelve unique cottage homes that reflect local residential architecture. These flats will provide independent living for active seniors who plan to downsize and desire maintenance-free and care-free living. The project addresses census data estimates of more than a 20% increase of senior citizens aged 70-85+ in the East Cobb area within the next few years.
Gill noted that the Sterling Estates Leasing Center opened on March 5. Grand opening is scheduled for August. Gill declared, “Our objective is to set the new standard for senior living in Cobb County.”
Partners Michael Brown, Steve Sodel, Bryan Sodel and Marshall Gill (who will also serve as Executive Director), each with strong, local ties to Cobb County, have seventy years of experience combined in the senior living industry. The developers have owned and managed several other facilities in Louisiana and Georgia for 16 years.

They initiated the Sterling Estates project after looking for a senior residence of a loved one. After exploring the market and determining an increasing senior population, they recognized that the area would benefit from having a new senior housing option. In order to discreetly blend into the residential area, the 10-acre site will be heavily landscaped, including the strategic placement of the cottages along Lower Roswell Road, as well as natural buffer zones along the property’s perimeter. The entrance at Lower Roswell Road has been carefully planned to optimize traffic flow. Joe O’Connor, a nearby resident, stated that the developers have been “totally responsive and absolutely one of the best neighbors anyone could want or expect.” As a corollary, Gill noted that Sterling Estates will employ 40 full-time people, engage many local vendors and pay substantial property taxes. 66 April 2012
