PUBLISHER’S NOTE April is full of shower bursts and dazzling sunlight. The earth seems greener. Flowers are blooming from the sapphire blue phlox to the gold forsythia. Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. Ahhh, summer . . . school will be out and how will your children pass the lazy, hazy days of summer? This April issue features our 15th Annual Day Camp Guide (see pages 1431). We have put together a list of day camps offered right here in East Cobb County and/or a short drive away. While day camp can help your children learn a better backhand in tennis, acquire a stronger stroke in swimming, or get in touch with nature, the true payoff of camp will be apparent when your child becomes a bit more self-reliant, self-sufficient and self-confident. Spring is also a great time to get in touch with nature. In fact, April is Earth Month, and Earth Day is April 22. So this edition includes an article on the traveling Vanishing Tree exhibit (see page 6) and on page 57, Murdock Elementary students sent in their tips on how we can be better stewards of the earth. Out of the mouths of babes… I’d like to dedicate this issue to my grandmother, Mary Hoyes (19121992), I could not help thinking about her as I was putting the information on day camps and the “green” articles together. As a camp director from 1970 to 1980, “Sunny” (her camp name) loved the outdoors and inspired the Girl Scout campers in her care to experience a sense of community and value nature. As a camp professional and as my grandmother, she taught me some valuable life lessons with her “sunny” disposition and her appreciation of what was real, genuine, and nonartificial in people as well as in the world. So, here’s to you, Grandma – who demonstrated how to age “actively” (she was 58 when she became a camp director!) and taught me to connect with nature and good people. To my readers, I hope the information in this edition helps you connect with nature and good people, too! Happy Spring!
ON THE COVER As president of the Eastern Cobb County Council (ECCC) of PTAs, Anne Davidson leads 35 PTAs to find ways to improve the academic lives of East Cobb children. As Anne explains, PTA presidents from East Cobb schools come together to learn how to be better leaders and share ideas. The best part about being president has been “working with some extremely talented people -- who selflessly commit their time, energy and skill to help enrich the learning environment for every student so that they have the tools they need to develop their individual potential for excellence. . . . We are incredibly fortunate to have a strong school community in East Cobb.” Anne has lived in Sibley Forest for 7 years with her husband, Matthew Njaa, and their two boys who attend Sope Creek Elementary School. VANISHING ACTS: TREES UNDER THREAT
TRAVELING EXHIBIT COMES TO EAST COBB
V
anishing Acts: Trees Under Threat, is a traveling exhibit that will be displayed at McFarlane Nature Park in East Cobb from February 27 to June 28. The exhibit seeks to increase public awareness of the precarious future of the world’s endangered trees and show how trees enrich our lives. Giant Panda or Wollemi Pine: Which one is more endangered in the wild? The answer may surprise people. There are less than 100 mature Wollemi pins in the wild, compared to 2,500 mature wild giant pandas. McFarlane Nature Park, at 280 Farm Road., is an 11.5 acre passive park owned by The Cobb Land Trust. The exhibit is in keeping with the Park’s intent to move toward becoming a small native tree arboretum. Mitigation trees have been made available through Keep Cobb Beautiful and trees have been donated by the Georgia Native Plant Society and others. An Eagle Scout project identified and tagged over 100 Piedmont-native trees throughout the Park and a listing of the trees at the Trust’s website (www.cobblandtrust. org) makes it possible for scouts and others to have a scavenger hunt for them at the Park. The Trust has made lesson plans available to nearby schools to extend the reach of the trees education. The plans were developed by The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois.
During the 16-week exhibit, other activities are planned to include: • Walk N Talks with county arborist David Griffin on April 25 and May 31 starting at 10am • tree plantings with volunteers • plein air artist days at the Park • the native plant sale of the Georgia Native Plant Society April 18. Scheduled activities with times and reservation information will be available at the Trust website. The Vanishing Acts exhibit is on loan from The Morton Arboretum. Morton developed and produced the exhibit in association with the Global Trees Campaign, a partnership between Fauna and Flora International and Botanic Gardens Conservation International. Morton is a worldrenowned leader in tree science and education. The 1,700-acre outdoor museum is outside of Chicago and features 4,117 kinds of trees, shrubs and other plants from around the world. Reservations are required at guzy@mindspring.com. A donation is suggested.

ECCC PTA PARENT & TEACHER SURVEY RESULTS By Anne Davidson, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs The East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) has released the results of ECCC PTA parent and teacher surveys about class sizes (student/teacher ratio), which were conducted at the end of the 2014 school year. The two separate, informal surveys reveal that responding parents and teachers expressed concern about larger class sizes in East Cobb and the corresponding impact on the learning experience. The purpose of the surveys was to understand how parents and teachers felt about class sizes. The survey results are relevant input at this time, when Governor Deal has established an Education Reform Commission to comprehensively review Georgia’s education system and the QBE funding formula, as well as an Education Advisory Committee to provide feedback on education policy issues. Participants in the separate parent and teachers surveys included 290 teachers from 40% of East Cobb public schools and 1,726 East Cobb parents. The surveys were anonymous. The surveys are in no way a comment on the caliber of our Cobb County School teachers and administrators. Cobb County has remarkable, talented, exceptional teachers and administrators who strive every day to provide a high-quality education to our students. Additionally, the ECCC PTA is composed of parents and volunteers, who are not professional statisticians or scientists and who did their best to make the survey questions fair and unbiased. The surveys were an informal, nonscientific means of gathering input from parents and teachers about a subject of importance to them -- class sizes. Some background: In Cobb County today there are more students per teacher than in 2008. This is a result of the unprecedented economic challenges that the Cobb County School District (School District) has confronted in the past six years. As a result of these challenges, the School District was forced to cut 1300 instructional, professional and support positions between 2008 and 2013 -- even as student enrollment increased. Fortunately, this trend has turned around, and the School District was able to add 300 teachers for the 2014-15 school year. See: School District 2014-15 FY Official Budget, pages 42, 46. Overall, the survey results reveal that responding parents and teachers are concerned that larger class sizes negatively influence the learning environment. According to 82% of responding parents, larger class sizes were an issue at their school. At the same time, 87% of teachers responding said that they have seen an increase of classroom sizes since they began teaching in Cobb County, and 76% of teachers responding said that the current class sizes make it more difficult to cover material effectively. Teachers and parents cited large class sizes as reasons for diminished oneon-one time with students and less opportunity to either assist students who are in need of extra help or to challenge students who are ready to advance academically. 8 April 2015
Parents also reported that larger class sizes result in student distraction from course work, and both parents and teachers reported additional behavior issues. Of the parents responding, 96% said that they were concerned that larger class sizes will have a negative impact on their child’s education in the long term. To view the survey results, see the Legislation & Advocacy page of our website: ECCCpta.org. As parents, we realize that the School District team and the Cobb County Board of Education consider providing a high-quality education as the highest priority, and that our state elected officials share this objective. We all want our students to succeed. We also recognize that this issue cannot be solved overnight. The reduction of 1300 positions occurred over 6 years. We share the survey results as a “snapshot” of parent and teacher feedback on larger class sizes and to provide input on a condition of education delivery in East Cobb that has a meaningful impact on students and teachers. There are likewise other education issues which our elected officials are trying to resolve – such as increasing teacher salaries, so that Cobb County can retain and recruit the best teachers for our students. Teacher retention and recruitment are unquestionably important to Cobb students and parents. We want the best teachers, and we want them treated well. Other matters that would support our teachers and promote academic achievement include teacher professional development, teacher training on education curriculum and putting effective data tools in place to measure and target how best to improve student academic performance. These are just a few of the education issues under consideration. It is our sincerest hope that parents, teachers, administrators, community members, elected officials and business leaders will work together to assess education challenges in Cobb County and in Georgia – and that we can together identify the best solutions. A high-quality education is critical for our children, so that they may compete successfully in an exponentially competitive international economy, and so that our communities, businesses and State will thrive. In closing, we are deeply grateful to the parents and teachers who filled out the surveys. We appreciate your valuable time and input.

EAST COBBER Writes Novel that
INSPIRES A
uthor and East Cobb resident Margaret McBride has written her new novel, "That Melvin Bray,” to inspire people to forgive, to heal, and to embrace a life filled with spiritual meaning and personal abundance. McBride creates the backbone of the story for love and healing from a mixture of personal insights and the experiences of those she loves. Add in a heap of psychological ingenuity and a dash of lighthearted adventure and you’ve got a full-blown spiritual thriller. When there is anger in the heart, will anger or love prevail? Childhood disappointments, like invisible phantoms, often lead to a lifetime of personal denial overshadowed by grief and regret - we often lie the loudest when we lie to ourselves.
Margaret McBride journey of healing for so many will leave a lasting impression with you, as it not only provides divine inspiration to accept life’s disappointments but also recognition of the compelling power of forgiveness. After all, if the heart truly forgives, there is nothing to forget.”
“That Melvin Bray” follows two young women who must confront and reconcile the burdens of their personal regrets in life while trying to solve the mystery of a missing child. Along the way, a higher power guides them toward the personal healing they seek.
“That Melvin Bray” By: Margaret McBride SC-ISBN: 978-1-4582-1212-2 Retail price: $18.99 Available at Abbott Press bookstore, abbottpress.com, barnesandnoble.com and amazon.com.
“Much like my own characters, I struggled to find the path to personal healing,” McBride said. “With some guidance from above, I found mine and hope my novel helps others do the same. I am hoping this story will stir your soul, as this novel attempts to demonstrate that the written word is far from silent. My prayer is that this
“Author Margaret McBride treads some familiar ground with her Christian inspirational That Melvin Bray. There is a lot going on in
this book; a lot that the Christian fiction reader will find of value here. Regular readers of Christian fiction will find a like-minded soul here, telling a story of faith and one’s ability to help rise us up from less than ideal beginnings. In a world where the dysfunctional family seems to be the new normal , this is a timely message and one that could be of significant service to many people.

ATLANTA COUNTRY CLUB RECEIVES NATIONAL HONORS Cobb County’s Atlanta Country Club (ACC) has been recognized as one of the top 125 Country Clubs of 2014 by the prestigious Platinum Clubs of America, the preeminent industry publication for leaders in the Private Clubs profession. ACC is ranked 64th out of the award winning 125 Country Clubs, which are defined as full service clubs with “Country Club” in the official name offering a wide variety of amenities in addition to golf and includes residential communities.
ss Atlanta Country Club staff: Mark Esoda, Golf Course Superintendent; Hugo C. Welch, CCM, General Manager; Scott Schroeder, Head Golf Pro; Christian Chemin, Executive Chef; not photographed Cary Collins, Director of Tennis.
A nationwide vote of private club managers, presidents and owners turned out in record numbers for the final 2014 results. The new selection criteria for this program was based on: • Universal recognition
• Excellence in amenities and facilities • Quality of membership • Governance and prudent fiscal management • Adapting to changing times • Overall experience.
Noteworthy, the Congressional Country Club of Bethesda, Maryland, ranked #1, and other Georgia Country Clubs that made the national list are Cherokee Town and Country Club, Capital City Club and Piedmont Driving Club, all in Atlanta. Additionally, the February issue of Golf Digest Magazine just released its much anticipated “America’s Greatest Golf Courses” listing, and ACC made the cut ranking 158 out of the 200 selected courses. Hugo Welch, ACC General Manager, commented, “Although we are most concerned about the scrutiny and satisfaction of our members, it is very gratifying to receive professional accolades from such credible and reputable sources. The continual enhancements we are making at ACC from our pristine golf grounds to an expanded fitness center, from our robust and growing tennis program to our exceptional dining services, we hope to rise even higher on these famous ‘best of’ lists.” 10 April 2015

T
wenty-five French teens from professional French families (ages 14-18) will be coming to the Atlanta area from July 7-27 and retired French teacher Linda Farmer (she taught both French and English at Lassiter High School for 24 years until she retired in 2008) is looking for host families who will show their student warmth and hospitality. These French teens from Paris to Provence want to experience American life first-hand and to be totally immersed in the English language. Ms. Farmer, along with a French chaperone, will oversee the program. “This is a wonderful opportunity,” says Farmer, “for Atlanta-area families to add an international dimension to their lives.”
LEC (Loisirs Culturels à l’étranger), the Paris-based sponsor, provides these students with comprehensive medical insurance and gives host families compensation for room and board. All come with ample spending money for expenses outside of the home and each has had three to six years of English depending on age. An excursion bus will take the French teens on sightseeing trips once per week while they are here. No French language skills are needed!

Coach Llyod May, Yanni Starr, Shembari Phillips, Cameron Jordan, Darius Perry, Samual Jackson, Kenneth Aninye and Kahlial Hawkins.
The 2015 Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Basketball State Championships were held last month in the Macon Coliseum. On Saturday, March 7, Wheeler captured the class AAAAAA championship with a 59-58 win over Pebblebrook High School (another Cobb County school). Because Wheeler’s basketball team was ranked as one of the eight top high school basketball teams in the nation, they were invited to play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods National Invitational, April 2-4. However, the GHSA’s bylaws forbid sports teams from playing in national-championship events or any games after the Georgia season is complete. Thanks to Wheeler parents’ and fans’ grass roots efforts , GHSA granted a special waiver of a by-law preventing teams from playing in a national tournament. So, the Wheeler Wildcats were able to participate in this prestigious national tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Go Wildcats!

DINING GUIDE
EAST COBB CHEF
WRITES BOOK ON THE SCIENCE OF MAKING HEALTHY FOOD TASTE
AMAZING H
ealthy cooking often involves cutting sugar, salt, and fat out of recipes—and those sacrifices can make food disappointing. In Mad Delicious (Oxmoor House; October 21, 2014; $35.00 US; Hardcover), veteran chef, culinary educator, and food writer Keith Schroeder reveals the kitchen science to achieve the satisfaction that’s often lost in healthy cooking. Throughout this cookbook, readers will learn how to master and manipulate ingredients, techniques, and cooking methods to create food everyone loves. In each of the 126 recipes in Mad Delicious, Keith Schroeder helps readers approach cooking in a different way. Using a chart-style recipe format, Schroeder explains why each ingredient in every recipe enhances flavor and texture. This fresh format helps readers easily see how ingredients interact. With his witty, friendly voice, Schroeder coaches home cooks step-by-step through the preparation of each dish. When the cooking’s done, readers not only have delicious food to enjoy and share—they have also gained a new confidence to use each time they step up to the stove. Examples of what home cooks learn in Mad Delicious: • Why water can help create rich butter flavor with less butter (Less-Butter Chicken) • Why steaming lean beef yields a tender, melt-inthe-mouth steak (Port-Stained Beef Medallions) • Why cream can actually lighten a salad dressing (Grilled Sweet Corn, Crab, and Asparagus Salad) • Why using two or more acidic ingredients—like peaches, feta, and lemon—instead of one makes a dish much more complex and addictive (Roasted Lemon Lamb Rack)
44 April 2015
ss Keith Schroeder
Each recipe Keith created was tested in the Cooking Light Test Kitchen and meets the same nutrition guidelines used in the magazine and every recipe includes a complete nutritional analysis. While some are inspired by American favorites, others are inspired by world cuisines that are inherently healthy and full of flavor, and Mad Delicious covers both. Recipes include: • Carnitas de Pollo uses slow cooking for juicy, falloff-the-bone meat with less fat. • Cocoa-Crusted New York Strip uses cocoa powder to create a steakhouse crust. • The Mad Array of Vegetables shows how steaming is a great method for seriously tasty, beautiful, and quick side dishes. • Georgia Peanut Fried Chicken uses powdered peanut butter to create a tasty, crisp coating. Mad Delicious includes over 230 colorful illustrations and handwritten notes by San Francisco artist Heather Diane Hardison. SPRING ALLERGIES 101 By Grace Chiang, M.D.,WellStar, Medical Group
The icky green stuff is back – it’s pollen season East Cobbers. To help you through this sniffly season, WellStar’s Grace Chiang, M.D, answers common questions about allergies.
• 1. Environmental control measures: strategies to minimize exposure to known allergic triggers, such as keeping a pet out of the bedroom, use of air filters, and dust mite proof encasings
1. What are the most common allergies and what causes them? Many people have allergies triggered by substances inhaled from the air, such as pet dander, mold, dust mites, and pollen (trees, grasses, weeds).
• 2. Medications: help to control symptoms but often need to be taken regularly in order to be effective
Food allergies have also become more common over the years, with >90% of food allergies caused by 7 foods: milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, peanut/ tree nuts. The underlying cause of allergies is likely due to a complex interaction between genetics and environmental factors. Many studies are underway to further elucidate the causes of allergies and why the incidence is rising in the U.S. and many other industrialized countries. In general, allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to a substance that is usually not pathogenic or harmful. Risk factors for developing allergies include a positive family history or personal history of allergic conditions including asthma or eczema. 2. Many people think they have a cold when it is actually allergies and vice versa-How do you differentiate between these two conditions? Symptoms that may occur in both conditions include runny nose, congestion, sneezing and cough. With a cold, these symptoms may be associated with fever and body aches, lasting for approximately 7-10 days. With allergies, itching of the eyes and/or nose is often present. Symptoms usually last for weeks to months at a time, as long as the allergic trigger is present. 3. People tend to think of allergies as causing itchy eyes, runny noses, but can they cause more serious health risks? Allergies can result in more serious health consequences in individuals with asthma. At least 80% of people with asthma have allergies that trigger their asthma, which can lead to coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. This may lead to asthma attacks that can result in ER visits or hospitalizations. It is thus important for asthmatics to see an allergist and identify potential allergic triggers. Treating a patient’s allergies is an important part of optimizing asthma care. 4. If you do have allergies, how can you manage them? A 3 pronged approach is most effective in managing allergies: 50 April 2015
• 3. Immunotherapy (“allergy shots”): the only treatment available that alters your body’s immune response to allergens and provides long lasting relief, reducing symptoms and the need for medications 5. How are allergies diagnosed? Skin testing may be safely performed in children and adults to accurately diagnose allergies, under the supervision of a board certified allergist. Contrary to common belief, there is no age requirement for skin testing. For example, many infants are able to be skin tested for allergy to milk and/or soy, if there is a concern for allergy to their formula. We are able to test for environmental and food allergies as well as stinging insects (bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jacket, fire ant) and penicillin. If skin testing is positive, we expect to see a small, red, itchy bump develop within 15 minutes. I thus have the opportunity to interpret the skin test findings with the patient at the same visit and develop an individualized treatment plan. 6. How are allergies related to other medical conditions, such as asthma and eczema? Asthma and eczema are other forms of allergic disease. It is thus common for allergies, asthma and eczema to all occur in the same patient or family. Having one of these conditions increases your risk for having the other two, something referred to as the “atopic march,” in which young children may initially have eczema and food allergies, later also developing allergies (hayfever) and asthma. 7. There is a lot of concern about giving children medicine-what is safe and what do you need to avoid? It can be difficult navigating the many allergy treatments that are now available OTC. It is worthwhile to see an allergist to establish the diagnosis of allergies first. Your allergist can then recommend specific treatments at doses that are safe for children. Grace Chiang, M.D., has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma and allergic conditions in both children and adults and is in practice with WellStar Medical Group, Allergy and Asthma. She is board certified in allergy/immunology and pediatrics.

SOPE CREEK CELEBRATES 30TH ANNUAL 5K RUN The 30th annual Sope Creek Elementary Spring Fever Run is set for Saturday, April 25th. Combined, the 5K and 1mile runs average over 650 participants made up of current students, alumni, and community runners who pound the pavement in support of improving the school. The thirtieth year promises to play homage to the first fundraiser run held in 1985 with t-shirt designs and DJ music reflecting that decade. Produced by the non-profit 501 (c) 3 Sope Creek Elementary Foundation, 100% of the funds raised will go toward a much needed Library/Media Center transformation into a 21st Century Learning Commons. When asked about the importance of the project, Sope Creek Principal Martha Whalen said, “This project will directly impact every student and allow the area to be used to its fullest potential. We are committed to creating the school’s largest classroom space allowing an opportunity to accelerate learning for our 1,149 students. The area is designed to increase student engagement, help students connect, and encourage all of our students to: ASK. THINK. CREATE. Parent support through the PTA and the Sope Creek Foundation has allowed us to begin the first stages of the project. This race will be instrumental in our efforts to furnish the space and focus on purchasing new technology to complete our next phase for the 2015-16 school year.”
The 5K run, a certified race, is a popular qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race as it takes place in one of East Cobb County’s beautiful residential neighborhoods and provides participants and spectators alike the opportunity to directly support Sope Creek students. The One Mile Run is planned for the elementary students to go at their own pace as they begin with their grade level and receive a finishing medal for their effort. Sope Creek is adding an alumni division to the One Mile Run and is hoping that many former students return to participate and show support. Sope Creek Foundation race co-chair Kristy Flowers added, “This is the 30th anniversary of the Sope Creek Foundation Spring Fever Road Race to benefit the school and in turn the whole community. We are fortunate to have the support of our school family, many local businesses who sponsor the race, and the greater community who come out to run or just enjoy the fun. The first event took place in 1985 with a vision to provide our community a way to support our school beyond what the county provides. As the largest elementary school in Cobb County, we are always looking for ways to give our students an educational edge.” To register and for more information visit www.sopecreekfoundation.org.

CROHN’S DISEASE Jack Spandorfer, 14, To Be Honored Hero In May 2015 “Take Steps Atlanta” CCFA Annual Walk
ss The Spandorfer Family: Parents Ellen and Dr. “Pip” with their children, Jack and Carly.
E
ast Cobbers Ellen and Pip Spandorfer will never forget the day they were told their oldest child, Jack Spandorfer, had Crohn's disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease that is chronic and incurable. Dr. Pip (as he is called), a pediatrician who also specializes in pediatric emergency medicine, explained, “For years Jack endured this illness as well as two surgeries. But then it got worse; we found out that Jack’s younger sister, Carly, also had this vicious disease.” Ellen, a psychologist, continued, “When Carly started to present similar symptoms, we got very concerned and took her to be evaluated right away.” Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation, or swelling, across the lining of the digestive tract and can affect other parts of the body as well. Approximately 1.6 million Americans suffer from IBD (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). Pediatric Crohn's/IBD affects 80,000 children in the US. There is no cure for Crohn's disease at this time. Jack, who is now 14 years old, was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in November 2011. Jack has a moderate to severe case and has still not yet achieved full remission. A year ago, Jack switched to the medicine, Humira, and he receives weekly injections, providing him with some relief from the disease. Carly, who is now 12, was diagnosed in November 2014. Ellen and Pip waited for the lab results, praying that she didn’t have Crohn’s.
54 April 2015
However, the colonoscopy confirmed what they had feared. Just a few months into Carly’s treatment, they still don’t know how her disease will progress. Ellen said, “We are hoping that by catching it and treating it early, that we will keep her as a mild case, not moderate to severe like Jack.” Carly, too, receives weekly injections of Humira. According to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), approximately 20-30% of Crohn’s patients have another family member affected by the disease, and families frequently share a similar pattern of illness. Statistics also show that 75% of individuals with Crohn’s disease are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Living with Crohn’s left the Spandorfer family feeling very isolated, with few people to talk to about what they were going through day to day with Jack and Carly, both Epstein School students. They contacted CCFA and asked if they could initiate a pediatric, adolescent, and family support group, with both Pip and Ellen being trained to be group facilitators. This would be a place where families could go and discuss symptoms, medications, side effects, research updates, cutting edge studies, pain management, nutrition, and much more. “We couldn’t sit on the sidelines; we decided that something more needed to be done for the families

that deal with IBD,” Pip explained. “And they love it, particularly the kids as they get to be with other kids that have IBD. I hope this support group will be a model for other communities across the country for kids, siblings and parents. We are so proud of this accomplishment, and will continue to help to ensure it is successful,” said Ellen. “In its first year, the group has more than 40 families regularly participating.” In 2012, Ellen and Pip became very involved with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, GA Chapter and participated in the first CCFA Walk. Each year, CCFA has a Walk in Georgia, “Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis,” raising money and awareness for the disease. On May 2, 2015, CCFA presents its 7th annual walk in Georgia, “Take Steps Atlanta,” and Jack Spandorfer is this year’s Honored Hero. “The money CCFA is raising funds programs like the support group, summer camp for kids with IBD, patient and professional education, as well as critical research to find new treatments and hopefully one day a cure,” explained Pip. The Spandorfers have been the top fundraising family for CCFA, having raised more than $35,000 in the past two years. They are aiming to raise another $50,000 this year. “3 ½ years into his diagnosis and Jack has still not gone into complete remission,” said Shannon Primm, CCFA Assistant National Walk Manager. “There are so many personal questions that remain for Jack, Carly and their parents: Will Jack have to have more surgery? Will he grow? How will this illness affect him when he goes off to college and beyond? Will Carly’s Crohn’s disease become more severe?” “Jack and his family know that the most obvious, and important, way to get answers to these questions and make life better for future patients is to support CCFA wholly in all of its endeavors,” said Shannon. “Whether it be research in the lab, support groups, or Camp Oasis - CCFA is the main outlet that is trying to find the cure for IBD.” “The Annual Crohn’s and Colitis Walk means so much for Jack,” said Ellen. “Last year, he had surgery on a Wednesday and on Saturday he wanted so badly to be a part of the Walk that we got him a wheelchair and “broke” him out of the hospital for a few hours.” "With everything I went through and everything I’ve learned, I'm hoping to make it a little easier for my sister and other kids with this disease,” said Jack. “Through Take Steps and the support group, my family feels so lucky to have the encouragement of other families going through the same things we are, and we love that we can give back. As my dad says, ‘we pay it forward for the next family’." For more information on the Annual Crohn’s and Colitis Walk visit: www.cctakesteps.org/atlanta. www.eastcobber.com

12 WAYS TO SAVE THE EARTH
Jennie Dang, a third grade teacher at Murdock Elementary School, submitted her students’ suggestions on how we can be better stewards of our environment. So, in honor of Earth Day, April 22, EAST COBBER selected 12 "acts of green" to save the earth.
“
We should start saving “water now. If we don’t by

“
Litter won’t clean up itself. People, we only have ONE planet earth and when it’s gone it’s gone. What I’m trying to say is take care of our earth by simply recycling and/or putting your trash in the trash can. STOP LITTERING!

– Lana Das
When you grow out of “shoes, you can reuse them and help people that don’t have shoes. One girl has raised more than 30,000 shoes for her country because a lot of people from her country don’t have shoes.

I think you should save “water. Some people do not know this, but by 2050 we could run out of drinking water! But, you can stop that by saving water. To save water you have to stop taking long showers. You can also water your plants at night so the sun doesn’t absorb the water and you have to water again.
