This is an exciting time with the buzz of new schedules, shoes, and haircuts. On August 1, approximately 112,000+ East Cobb children went back to school. East Cobb’s public schools’ reputation for top test scores and exceptional learning environments draws people to East Cobb. While test scores offer a quick take that helps parents and teachers measure a school’s success, it is essential to note that beyond the rankings, each school needs to be assessed for other qualities, such as strong school leadership, parental and community support, creating an environment where students can learn and grow at their pace, as well as access to technology. What makes our community exceptional is if you can’t find what you need in public schools, we also have an incredible variety of private schools. Even if you don’t have a child in school, we all have a stake in our community’s educational system— from our property values to future leaders and employees.
Like so many other East Cobb parents, I will be in the trenches collecting on-the-ground intelligence by attending PTA meetings, volunteering at my child’s school, and/or bumping into other moms and dads to help me ensure my boys experience the excitement—and relevance—of learning. I will also be planning where to eat, and that is why we put together a dining guide to spotlight some of our local options, you can find that on pages 20-23.
Another opportunity to come together as a community is the EAST COBBER 26th Annual Parade & Festival Presented by CertaPro Painters on September 14th, details provided on pages 12 and 13. This special event could not happen without the support of our local businesses, and we are most grateful to them. Hope to see you there!

HANDLING CHILDREN’S DENTAL EMERGENCIES
Children are full of energy and adventure, but sometimes their playfulness can lead to dental emergencies. As a parent, school employee, or caregiver, it’s important to know how to recognize these emergencies and when to seek immediate dental care for your little ones.
Common Dental Emergencies for Children Include:
Toothache: Persistent tooth pain could indicate an underlying issue such as decay or infection.
Chipped or Broken Tooth: This can happen during falls, sports activities, or biting on hard objects.
Knocked-Out Tooth:
Quick action is crucial in saving a knocked-out tooth. Handle it by the crown (top part) and avoid touching the root, rinse gently ONLY if it is dirty, and try to reinsert it into the socket.
If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saliva and seek dental help immediately.
Loose Tooth: A loose permanent tooth should be evaluated by a dentist to prevent further damage or loss.
Cut or Bitten Lip, Tongue, or Cheek: Clean the area gently and apply pressure to stop bleeding. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, or if the cut is deep, seek medical attention.
When to See the Dentist:
Persistent Pain: If your child complains of persistent tooth pain, it’s important to see a dentist to determine the cause.
Swelling: Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw could indicate an infection that needs immediate attention.
Bleeding: If there is uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth, seek emergency dental care.
Trauma: Any significant trauma to the mouth, such as a knocked-out tooth or a blow to the jaw that causes pain or difficulty opening, requires immediate dental evaluation.
Signs of Infection: Symptoms like fever, swelling, or pus around a tooth should not be ignored.
Preventing Dental Emergencies:
Regular Dental Checkups: Routine dental visits can help prevent emergencies by catching issues early.
Mouthguards: Encourage your child to wear a mouthguard during sports activities to prevent injuries.
Healthy Habits: Teach good oral hygiene habits like brushing, flossing, and avoiding sugary snacks.
Children’s dental emergencies can be stressful, but being prepared and knowing when
to seek help can make all the difference. Be sure that you have established a relationship with a dentist whom you can call for immediate advice. Remember, prompt action and preventive measures are key to maintaining your child’s oral health and beautiful smile. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact your child’s dentist for guidance.

THE VITAL ROLE OF PTA MEMBERSHIP: A BEACON FOR SCHOOL CLIMATE AND ADVOCACY
By Tammy Andress, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs
In the bustling educational landscape of East Cobb County, the East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) stands as a formidable advocate, comprising nearly 25,000 members across 35 schools. As we look ahead to a new school year, it’s crucial to emphasize why your PTA membership remains indispensable for fostering a supportive school climate and championing the rights of all students.
Founded over a century ago right here in Georgia, the PTA has evolved into the nation’s largest volunteer child advocacy organization. Our mission echoes through the halls of every school: to empower families and communities in advocating for every child’s potential. At its core, the PTA values collaboration, commitment, diversity, respect, and accountability, principles that resonate deeply within the East Cobb community.
Amid ongoing challenges, the question arises: why does PTA membership matter now more than ever? Simply put, the PTA is not just an auxiliary body; it is integral to shaping the very essence of our school environments. By joining the PTA, you contribute to a collective effort that nurtures our children’s educational journey, instills a passion for learning, and strengthens community bonds through robust family engagement.
Your support enables the ECCC local unit PTAs to provide vital resources such as teacher grants, student support initiatives, and enriching programs that celebrate literature, arts, science, and diversity. Through initiatives like the National PTA Reflections Program, which inspires over 300,000 student artists nationwide, our PTAs foster creativity and critical thinking, empowering students to explore their potential and build confidence that extends beyond the classroom.
Equally impactful is the PTA’s role in advocacy. From local policy decisions to state and national
reforms, PTAs monitor and advocate for educational priorities that benefit all students, families, and educators. With a membership spanning millions nationwide, your voice becomes part of a powerful chorus advocating for improved education, health, and safety standards for our children.
The success stories speak volumes: Walton High School recently achieved the highest membership numbers statewide, while three-quarters of ECCC PTAs received accolades for their outstanding contributions to their school communities. These achievements underscore the profound impact of PTA membership on our schools and surrounding communities.
However, none of this would be possible without your support. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, student, or community member, your membership, donations, and volunteerism sustain the PTA’s mission. Together, we ensure that every child in East Cobb County can thrive and succeed.
As we embark on the 2024-2025 school year, let us continue to uphold the legacy of advocacy and community that defines the PTA. Your membership is not just a commitment—it is a beacon of hope and empowerment for every child’s future.
Join us in making a difference. Together, we are “One Voice for Every Child.”
Tammy is the President of the East Cobb County Council of PTA’s and the Parliamentary and Membership Chair of the Lassiter PTSA. She is a longtime advocate for public education, is married to Kiffer and is the mother of three daughters, Hannah, Rebekah, and Rachel.
Numerous studies have shown that for developing children and teens, being involved in musical studies can improve the students’ ability to learn and process languages. It can help develop creativity, it can nurture empathy, and it can promote teamwork and a community mindset—all things that have been shown to assist in the growth and development of children.
Music education has been shown to provide more than twice the benefit for young folks as sports, theater, or dance—benefits like increased brain power/functionality, enhanced motor skills, and accelerated sensory development. It also nurtures creativity, builds communities, and helps students develop important skills like cooperation, perseverance, and leadership.
Lots of studies that show that those who actively participate in music education will find their auditory systems maturing faster, as well as improvements in executive function; additional studies also indicate that memory and study habits are also improved when one actively participates in a reasonable music education program.
A reasonable music education program would involve an experienced and qualified music teacher, who knows the material they are presenting but also
takes the time to customize everything to best serve each individual student. To “actively participate” in such a program, the student would need to commit to weekly lessons (studies have also shown that, for most instruments, weekly lessons are the ideal frequency), and to practicing sufficiently between lessons.
That word “sufficiently” can be a tough one, because it differs for each student—some students will need to log more time on their instrument between lessons, but most aspiring musicians can see good progress with regular, consistent practice sessions averaging somewhere around 30-60 minutes, every day or at least every other day (different students will have different needs in that area).
It can be hard for a new music student to gauge what will work best for them—and that is where an experienced and qualified music teacher will once again be invaluable. Good music teachers are devoted to helping others learn to play better, and as a result they are usually the best source for music instruction.

Led by Owner/ Operator Ilene Kapper Oxman and Chef Santiago Echavarria, the new restaurant promises delicious food and sophisticated fun. The menu features something for everyone, from pork chops to miso-glazed Chilean sea bass to steak frites. Ilene highly recommends mussels and martinis at the bar, the heartbeat of the restaurant. POP QUEEN BAKED GOODS: EAST COBB’S SWEET NEW ADDITION
By Marie Muir
Ashlynn Rose Rich’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a sprinkle of sweetness. A graduate of Sprayberry High School’s class of 2024, Ashlynn has joined East Cobb’s culinary scene. With a knack for baking and an entrepreneurial spirit, Ashlynn, who has Down syndrome, is proving that there are no limits to what one can achieve with dedication and love.
Ashlynn’s baking journey began at a young age and her passion grew over the years as she discovered joy in sharing her sweet treats. In September 2022, with the support of her mother, Linda Ramirez, Ashlynn established Pop Queen Baked Goods. Linda, the bakery’s founder and Ashlynn’s co-baker, has been her daughter’s guiding force, ensuring that every homemade confection is a testament to Ashlynn’s talent and hard work.
Pop Queen Baked Goods offers an array of mouth-watering treats, from pies and miniature bundt cakes to the fan-favorite cake pops. Ashlynn, the head baker, came up with the bakery’s name and adds her unique touch to every recipe. Her cake pops, in particular, have won the hearts of many in East Cobb. With flavors like chocolate, buttercream, lemon, red velvet, chocolate chip, and brownie, there’s something for everyone. Ashlynn’s favorite is chocolate, while Linda prefers the rich, cream cheese taste of red velvet.
Recently, Pop Queen Baked Goods made 150 cake pops for the Tommy Nobis Center in Marietta, Georgia’s largest nonprofit serving youth and adults with disabilities. Her contribution was a sweet success, showcasing her commitment to serving the community. On the Fourth of July, she sold over 500 cake pops, delighting folks with her delicious creations.
Born and raised in East Cobb, Ashlynn attended Pitner Elementary School, Blackwell Elementary School, Cherokee High School, and ultimately graduated from Sprayberry High School with honors and the title of scholar-athlete for her involvement in the school’s swim team.
Her academic and culinary achievements have been celebrated by family, friends, and the entire community. With four older siblings living nearby, Ashlynn’s family is a source of constant support and inspiration.
Ashlynn’s baking talents are also a family legacy. Some of her recipes, like her cherished apple pie and
her delectable baked creations at a local event.
black magic cake, have been passed down through generations.
When she’s not in the kitchen, Ashlynn enjoys exploring East Cobb. She likes attending concerts and festivals at Marietta Square and frequenting Marietta Diner. You can often find Ashlynn sharing a pie with friends at Frankie’s Italian Ristorante and Pizzeria on Canton Road. She’s even a regular at Taste of Marietta and the Marietta Square Farmers Market. Ashlynn loves spending time with her family and cuddling with her two dogs, Maxie, a 14-year-old miniature poodle, and Ollie, a 2-year-old Maltese Shih Tzu poodle.
Ashlynn and Linda have big dreams for Pop Queen Baked Goods. They hope to purchase a trailer and get their treats into local coffee shops and businesses. This October, find the mother-daughter duo at the Buddy Walk at Kennesaw State University’s Marietta Campus, supporting Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta.
Ashlynn’s story is one of creativity and community spirit. To support Pop Queen Baked Goods, contact Ashlynn and Linda at popqueen.bakedgoods@gmail. com or call 678-977-9693. Follow their baking business journey on Facebook: @PopQueenBakedGoods and Instagram: @PopQueenBakery.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY
by Ginger Markert-Brusa
Teri Kish was 155 pounds in 2022. She lost 30 pounds with Sparkle Wellness. Here is Teri’s story.
Iam the Director of Adult Discipleship at Roswell Presbyterian Church. I found Sparkle through a fellow church member. I had not seen her due to the pandemic, and her transformation was incredible. I saw a Facebook post where she credited Sparkle Wellness.
My turning point came when my weight crept up and was not stopping. In the past, I would go up a few pounds and remain there. But this time, it continued to creep. I was buying bigger clothing, and I knew I would have to make a change in my lifestyle if I wanted to stop gaining weight.
I cut high-calorie, low-nutrient snacks and started eating nutrient-dense foods. I incorporated more protein in my diet to help keep me full longer and build muscle. I never eliminated any food completely. I knew that would make me want that food more. I went in with the mindset of this being a lifestyle change – not temporary – and went slow with changes. Having the support system of Sparkle Wellness has made a big difference. Jacynta’s weekly classes and challenges, my awesome ambassador and cheerleader, Traci, and the support from the Sparkle community keep me motivated and committed.
At Jacynta’s recommendation, I obtained MyFitnessPal to start tracking my food. This allowed me to track how much I was eating and the number of calories each food contained. I knew I was not eating as well as I should, but seeing the actual stats made me realize what specifically I needed to change.
I began tap-dancing class before Sparkle. I had danced in my youth and thought it would be a fun way to get myself moving again. I bought a rowing machine because it was easy on my knees. Like dancing, I focus on technique. It can be meditative. I bought a fitness tracker to keep me moving. I get focused on tasks and sit for hours without moving. The fitness tracker reminds me to get up and move. I see what I have accomplished at the end of the day and week. I also joined Sparkle Fitness in Fall 2023 and now strength train. I exercise 5-6 times per week.
In November, I had an intense cough and pulled a muscle in my ribs. I was unable to strength train or row for months. Previously, I would have slid back into
old habits and stopped exercising completely. Having the support of the Sparkle community made all the difference. I continued to focus on keeping healthy habits and slowly added strength training back into my routine until I was back to where I was before my injury.
My biggest challenge comes when I am out of my regular routine, especially on vacation. It is very challenging to keep good habits when you are away from home and limited by the foods around you. I have tried not to get stressed about it and keep a mindset of balance.
Sparkle Wellness gives me confidence in myself and what I can achieve. I enjoy exercising, which is something I never thought I would say. I feel stronger and have a lot more energy than I used to.
Wellness is a lifelong journey, and I continue improving many aspects of my health. It is a great feeling to know I am on the right path, and others in the Sparkle community are right there with me.
