PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover Featured on our front cover this month are East Cobb residents Grainne and Clay Owen, founders of Curing Kids’ Cancer (CKC) . Christmas has become the most elaborate and important occasion in America with its own special pageantry, music, feasting and merrymaking. With holiday cards to send, decorations to be hung, the buying and wrapping of gifts, December is a very busy month. This busy-ness is reflected in our special Holiday Happenings section, which is full of the season’s special events. The EAST COBBER also puts together a special section, our annual Holiday Gift Guide, which features local merchants that can make your gift-giving a lot easier as well as support our local economy! Be sure to read pages 16-23 for inspiration. I am proud to say you cannot find so much local info in such a small package -- I mean magazine. As hurried as this season can get, it is still a wonderful opportunity to create special memories and to remember all the goodness in the world! This issue spotlights those East Cobbers giving the gifts of time and good works all year round -–from Grainne and Clay Owen on our front cover who created a non-profit to help kids with cancer to the congregants at Temple Kol Emeth continuing the religious tradition of writing the Torah.

3 nonprofit, the organization has raised $2 million to help fund pediatric cancer research. Many East Cobbers may be familiar with the group’s Coaches Curing Kids’ Cancer and Teachers Curing Kids’ Cancer programs where donations are made to Curing Kids Cancer instead of giving the typical end-of-the-season coaches’ gifts and/or teachers’ gifts. “I am so moved and proud to see how our efforts have helped to fund cutting-edge research in pediatric cancer. Knowing that the projects that CKC is funding are making such a difference in the lives of children with cancer and their families. . . that something good has come

As L. Frank Baum wrote in The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus: “It is possible for any man, by good works, to enshrine himself as a Saint in the hearts of the people.” The EAST COBBER is happy to celebrate the life and adventures of the many “santas” that live—not in the North Pole—but right here in East Cobb!

Timber Ridge Music Teacher Creates Christmas CD

ss David Savage

Just in time for the Christmas holidays, “Christmas Piano by David Savage” features local musician and music teacher, David Savage, performing some of his favorite holiday songs. The CD is a combination of jazz and blues, and offers a wide variety of different music styles to please young and old alike.

An East Cobb resident and a music teacher at Timber Ridge Elementary, David Savage was inspired by the loss of both his parents to record a Christmas CD to send out in gratitude to the many people throughout the country that have made a difference in his life. “This was a total do-it-yourself project,” says David. “The CD has come full circle from starting out as a Christmas card to rekindle friendships to what the CD has become today.” On December 10th, David will perform at Gingerbread Jam at The Mansour Center in Marietta to benefit The Dare To Hope Foundation. David will also perform at the Music & Arts Store, 1255 Johnson Ferry Road, on December 9 from 6:30pm -8:30pm.

PTA Diversity: Enhancing Cultural Competence in our Schools By Wendy Stewart, Diversity Chair, East Cobb County Council of PTAs Last year, a new first-grader was enrolled in an East Cobb elementary school. Like so many of her classmates, she was excited to go to school, make new friends, and have fun. Her behavior, however, was unlike that of her friends. When she spoke to her new classmates, she spoke very loudly. When she engaged her new friends in conversation, she gestured with her hands and stood unusually close to them. She made some of the students uncomfortable. The teacher was concerned and identified her as a behavior problem in the class. Her parents were contacted and an intervention process was initiated. Her concerned parents came to meet with the teacher to understand the issues and what steps needed to be taken to address her behavior. As the teacher described her concerns to the parents, the child’s mother suddenly made the connection. Speaking loudly, using animated hand gestures, close-in personal space are all typical cultural behaviors: her Latin American cultural behaviors. Her family, natives of Colombia, had only recently moved to the United States. Her daughter was simply communicating in a manner typical of that of many of Latino heritage. Her realization, as she shared it with school officials, was like the proverbial “light bulb” in the darkness for both teacher and parent. The teacher gained some insight into the understanding of another culture’s norms and the parent saved her daughter a lifetime of labeling as a behavior problem. This is a true story. And, no doubt, stories like this are taking place all over Georgia all the time and with less fortunate outcomes. As our state becomes increasingly culturally diverse, teachers are finding themselves handling challenges in their microcosmic classrooms for which their education could never have prepared them. In East Cobb schools, however, PTA leaders are facilitating a solution for them. And it all begins with understanding. Cultural competence is a popular catch phrase you may have heard lately. But beyond the trendiness of the phrase is an important concept that’s actually the key to understanding and to bridging the culture gap in our schools. Cultural competence is the ability of a person or organization to interact easily and effectively with people of different cultures. In the context of our schools and PTAs, this means understanding the students we serve, what cultures they represent, what norms and behaviors they might bring to the classroom, how their families view and interact with schools and teachers, etc. If our teachers and PTA leaders understand the cultures that make up our school communities, they are better equipped to ensure every child, and their classes as a whole, have the best chance for success. The PTA offers two programs specifically designed to help schools enhance their cultural competence. Before a school can become appropriately culturally competent, they have to know which cultures belong to their school family. Unfortunately, this information isn’t easily accessible. Creating a “Cultural Resources Group” offers an opportunity to help schools identify the cultures and nationalities of their families, while identifying “cultural experts” willing to help teachers enhance classroom instruction with firsthand knowledge. By sending home a simple form, parents and caregivers who could be considered “cultural experts” 8 December 2011

for their native country, culture, and faith are recruited to make themselves available as resources to teachers in the event that they are teaching something about that country, culture, or faith, and would like to have a little more first-hand experience to supplement their lesson. For example, a teacher might ask a volunteer to come to speak to a class about their country, to bring in cultural artifacts that support a lesson, or talk about particular observances or holidays. So the cultural competence advantages of this program are twofold: expert resources for the classroom and a database of which countries, cultures, and faiths which comprise a school’s community. That data can then be used to produce our second cultural competency program. Once a school has identified its various cultures, a “Cultural Summit” is a great way for the faculty and staff to enhance their cultural competence, particularly as it relates to education. A Cultural Summit involves the creation of a panel of cultural experts representing the countries, cultures, and faiths represented at a school. These experts might be volunteers from a school’s Cultural Resources Group or from community or religious groups. Panelists and faculty members participate in an honest, open, and respectful question and answer discussion, with the faculty asking questions of panelists regarding topics such as their culture, traditions, faith, holidays, and, in particular, their perspectives on education. Questions may range from things like “What is the significance of a bindi?” or “Is Chanukah the most important Jewish holiday?” to “How do Hispanic parents view their role with respect to their children’s education?” or “What cultural norms or behaviors might affect classroom situations?” There is a strict emphasis on respect, honesty, and understanding during the meeting. No political or religious debate or argument is allowed. This forum is strictly for the purposes of educating faculty and staff about the participating cultures and faiths so that they can facilitate the understanding of those cultures and faiths at school, enhance student success, and further everyone’s inclusion in school programs. The value of cultural competence in our schools cannot be understated. It offers the tools for understanding that our faculties need to bridge their classroom culture gaps. The PTA is dedicated to serving as a cultural broker with programs like the Cultural Resources Group and Cultural Summits. We recognize that the more our teachers know about all of their students, the better they can work together and the more successful they are as a class. It’s true. It’s easy. And it all begins with understanding. For information on these or any other PTA diversity or cultural programs, please contact Georgia PTA Diversity Chair Wendy Stewart at wstewart@georgiapta.org.

Kick Start to Better Health and Fitness

Training directly under the founder of the art, Marshall Pereira, better known to his students as Master P, is now bringing Choi Kwang Do to East Cobb. In fact, the founder, Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, sent him to oversee the East Cobb location. Both children (classes for 4-11) and adults (classes for 12 and older) can benefit from this martial arts program that promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well being. Choi Kwang Do actually started right here in Georgia in 1987. A world–famous, successful Tae Kwon Do practitioner and trainer, Grandmaster Choi founded Choi Kwang Do to incorporate scientific principles of motion and natural bilateral movement, as well as breathing and stretching into traditional martial arts. Choi Kwang Do is not intended for competition. Master P, who holds an 8th degree Black Belt, has been involved in martial arts since 1975 and has been an instructor since 1982, exclusively teaching Choi Kwang Do since 1988. He has trained more than 30 Choi Kwang Do instructors who are now teaching throughout the world. Master P cites the benefits of Choi Kwang Do as strength, endurance, flexibility, stress relief, weight control, self defense, improved self-esteem, improved coordination and balance, and increased energy. He goes on to say that children with attention deficit disorders, learning disorders, hyperactivity, and simply shy personalities have all seen improvements in these areas in just a few lessons. Parents of some of his students tout better behavior and grades as a direct result of their children’s training. For adults, Choi Kwang Do instructors teach how to maintain flexibility, manage stress, and increase productivity. Master P offers 1 hour classes for children, ages 4 and up, Monday thru Friday: 4pm, 5pm, and 6pm, and Saturdays at 11am. Adult classes (ages 12 and up) are offered Monday thru Friday at 7pm and Saturdays at 12 noon. Visit their new location at 4994 Lower Roswell Road, suite 18 & 19, in Marietta/East Cobb. Great for the whole family, lessons cost $75 per person for unlimited classes monthly. Showers are available. For more information, contact Master P at 770.875.5157 or Masterp@choikwangdo.com.

Temple Kol Emeth Writes Torah By Michelle Hutchinson

1

ss |1| Rabbi Danneman and Rabbi Lebow write the first letter in the new Torah. |2| The ceremony began with the blowing of the shofar, ram’s horn, followed by |3| the procession of the temple’s existing Torahs.

In Temple Kol Emeth’s 30-year history, the Reform Jewish synagogue on Old Canton Road has had several Torahs but never one written by the congregants. That began to change on October 23, when, in a ceremony marked by music, merry-making, and speeches, temple members began writing their own Torah, the scrolled parchment containing the first five books of The Bible. The Torah contains 304,805 Hebrew letters and 613 commandments, and the last one says that it is incumbent upon every Jew to write a Torah. Since it is impractical for everyone to write a complete scroll, the 613th commandment can be obeyed by writing a single letter of a Torah. According to Rabbi Mordechai Danneman, the Sofer (or certified scribe) who is overseeing this project for Kol Emeth, “If one letter is missing, a Torah is not complete. Each Torah letter is just as important and holy as every other. So if you’ve written one letter, it’s as if you’ve written an entire Torah.”

Temple Kol Emeth’s leader, Rabbi Steven Lebow, said, “Torahs never perish. The words remain eternal. The youth who participate in writing this Torah will see their children come back in later years and read from it. One age receives the message from the past and transmits it to the future.” The parchment on which the Torah is written must come from a kosher animal, one that is slaughtered in accordance with Jewish dietary and ceremonial laws. In addition, the ink must be made from kosher ingredients. The Torah-writing is expected to take a year, and several dates have been set aside for Kol Emeth members to write their letters. For more information, call 770-973-3533 or email info@kolemeth.net. East Cobber Michelle Hutchinson is President of Wordhelper: Editing, Writing, Resumes & More, www.wordhelper.com.

The East Cobb Citizen of the Year is awarded to a citizen who has demonstrated through definable, exceptional deeds that he or she has made the East Cobb area a better place to live. This award is to honor an individual whose impact through the years will be recognized and regarded with pride throughout the area as a role model. Rozzo is passionate about East Cobb and promoting “all the good people that contribute to our exceptional quality of life.” She said she was humbled and honored to be chosen, but she wouldn’t dwell on it. “It was truly a Cinderella moment for me, . . . after a couple of hours I was back at my desk returning phone calls, and then being mom to my three kids,” shares Rozzo. Cynthia Rozzo has been the editor and publisher of EAST COBBER since founding the magazine in 1993. She is also the founder of the EAST COBBER Parade and Festival, which is the largest parade in Cobb County with more than 2,500 participants annually. Root canals. Tooth extractions. Fillings. Dental work isn’t exactly pleasant -- or cheap. And in this tumultuous economy, many families are reluctant to spend money on it. But neglected teeth can lead to a mouthful of problems. So on November 19, the going rate for a seat in the dentist’s chair at Marietta Family Dental Care was free. No strings attached. The owners of Marietta Family Dental Care, Drs. Azita and Michael Mansouri, were the driving force behind Cobb County’s first-ever annual Dentistry from the Heart event which provided free dental care to people who could not get care otherwise. The doctors anticipated a very busy day and opened the doors of their practice, Marietta Family Dental Care (located on Lower Roswell Road), at 4am, Saturday, November 19. To illustrate the level of need, this year patients began lining up outside the practice as early as 8am on Friday for the Saturday clinic. Volunteer hygienists and other staff joined Drs. Azita and Michael Mansouri and provided free oral exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions. The dentists committed to the project as a meaningful way to give back to their community. “My wife and I just wanted a way to give back and say thank you to the wonderful people of East Cobb who have

brought so much happiness and success to our practice,” said Dr. Michael Mansouri. Here are some highlights from this very special day: • More than 250 patients were serviced. • More than $120,000 of work was provided. • 55% of patients received extractions (a tooth pulled), 32% of patients received fillings, and 13% of patients received dental cleanings. • First patient was in line by 8am, Friday morning. By 3:30pm More than 400 people were in line. • First patient was seen by the doctor at 4am on Saturday. • There was an overwhelming turnout and an additional 100 people were seen from what was anticipated. • A total of 12 doctors and more than 70 dental volunteers worked that day. Although Dr. Mansouri was the main contributor to this event, he would like to thank the volunteers and the following sponsors: Microscopy Dental, Pure Life Supplies, 3M, Key Worth Bank, Henry Schein, Premier Dental, United Concordia, Willeford Group, Oral B.

Day Spa Nirvana Gives the Gift of Relaxation

silvafm@silvapiano.com

Nirvana, in some Eastern religions, refers to a release from the state of suffering. With its offerings of a host of stressrelieving massage and therapeutic services, East Cobb’s Day Spa Nirvana is aptly named. A family-run business, Day Spa Nirvana is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month. Located in the Kroger shopping center at Shallowford and Sandy Plains roads, Day Spa Nirvana’s specialties include an affordable one-hour foot massage for $29. Stanley Ge, manager, said this service, unique in East Cobb, employs the methods of reflexology, which can improve health and circulation while alleviating stress and insomnia. “We chose East Cobb to open our business because it is a stable, family-friendly community,” Ge said. “Our customers are interested in learning more about therapeutic massage and how it can improve their overall health and well being.” In addition to foot massage, Day Spa Nirvana also provides deep tissue massage, facials using the Hungarian organic product line Eminence, as well as waxing and eyebrow and lash tinting. Ge said Nirvana offers a $49 per month membership, which entitles members to a monthly one-hour massage, discounted massages for family members and 10 percent discounts on any spa service or product. They also offer facial memberships for $59 per month, which include microdermabrasion, pumpkin peel treatments and other benefits, with no contracts required. Gift certificates for couples massages or group foot massages with friends are popular gifts during the holidays. “We stay open late so that our clients can get massages after work or dinner,” Ge said. The spa is located at 2960 Shallowford Road in Marietta/ East Cobb. The spa is open Monday – Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. To enjoy Day Spa Nirvana’s unique therapeutic services, readers are encouraged to stop by. To purchase a gift certificate or membership, call 770- 977-0909. ss Owner Laura Fanoe and her brother, Dennis Farrell, Jr. model highly popular True Religion jeans with a casual shirt and jacket. All can be purchased at The Hub Boutique.

Following in the footsteps of her beloved grandmother’s retail store in Indiana, East Cobb resident Laura Fanoe is opening a boutique full of upscale jeans, cute little tops, accessories, and unique gift items. Laura gave her shop the same name as grandma’s shop, The Hub Boutique “The Center of Fashion”, as the ultimate nod to grandma. She says, “My grandmother and I were best friends.” The Hub is still a family affair, as Laura’s mother-in-law, Dorris, family members, and her best friend are helping out. “As a Marietta native, I wanted to give local women (and men) the accessibility to great designer clothing without the hassle of time consuming commute. I want The Hub Boutique to be your “go to” store when you are in need of a wardrobe/attitude pick-me-up,” shares Laura. The Hub Boutique opened for business November 3, just in time for colder weather and the search for holiday gifts! Men and women of all ages can find high-end jeans at The Hub. Laura had both normal and a-bit-heavier people try on different jeans, until she found the best brands to carry: jeans that make everyone look great! She said, “The idea is to have something for everybody…to [have customers] find the perfect fit.” At The Hub Boutique, you can shop for upscale, wellcut jeans or lower-priced gifts. Explore not just shades of indigo denim, but several other color options. NYDJ, the newly re-branded Not Your Daughter Jeans, are available. The store carries everything from the cleaner-looking Henry & Bell to the very trendy look of True Religion. “We are incorporating San Diego Hat Company merchandise…including a really cool scarf that has a pocket,” said Laura. Another unique item is a soy candle that makes a warm wax you rub on your hands, as a kind of lotion. Who knows what other cute things you might find? Check out The Hub Boutique at Merchant’s Walk shopping center, 1311 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 140, in Marietta/East Cobb. Bring One For The Chipper

Colder Weather and Your Automobile Sitting in the driveway your car may not look like it’s having a hard time dealing with the colder temperatures, but the fact is it’s having a hard time getting up and running much like you or I do on cold winter mornings. The oil running through your engine is a lot thicker (it becomes the consistency of pancake syrup) which reduces its effectiveness. Therefore it is best to use synthetic blend oil. This mixture keeps a liquid consistency in the winter which helps the engine turn over easier. The cooling system of your vehicle also needs to be checked. Rubber parts can become brittle and fail with the extreme temperatures of winter. The radiator and heater hoses should be crack and leak free. Having the radiator flushed is a good idea before outside temperatures plummet. This would ensure that corrosion does not build up in the system and the proper mixture of antifreeze and water is maintained to prevent freezing. Your car’s battery is probably hardest hit in the winter. The battery is filled with chemicals that produce electrons. Its reactions are much slower in cold weather. So besides the cooling system failing, oil being way too thick, now your battery has lost half of its cranking power as your car requires more juice to get it started! It is vital to make sure that your battery is at a fully charged state. A battery load test will let you know if you need a new battery. Also, make sure there is no corrosion forming on the battery cables and terminals. Corrosion creates resistance and reduces the amount of power that is drawn from the battery. Ensuring these systems are performing properly will make your vehicle ready for the winter months, and eliminate possible breakdowns!

Keep Cobb Beautiful will sponsor free recycling drop-offs. Keep Cobb Beautiful is inviting everyone to “Bring One for the Chipper,” and recycle your Christmas tree after the holidays. The team at Zeba Salon and Spa are as warm and welcoming as the hot tea they prepare for their clients. East Cobb resident, Sima Abbasi, launched Zeba Salon in 2008, and she loves every aspect of it. Sima has been a stylist for 18 years and salon owner for 14 of those years. “I enjoy interacting with different people and making each one of them feel uniquely beautiful,” she says. The salon is designed with a warm, but modern feel, which she says is indicative of her staff and the services they provide. Zeba is a full-service salon, providing customized color and cut to women, men and children. The master stylists also offer custom treatments and hair package programs for each client’s specific hair needs. Sima believes that she has assembled the most elite team of stylists to take care of any and all clients, and she encourages clients to try different in-house stylists to find the right fit, or just to try something new. Zeba is an Elite L’Oreal Professional Salon with a L’Oreal Professional educator on staff to help with any and all hair-related questions and concerns. Each stylist has advanced training from some of the best in the industry. Ongoing education, consistent training and the multicultural backgrounds of the staff set the salon apart from all others in the area. Additionally, the salon offers spa services in a private room with an onsite aesthetician. Using BioElements skincare products, treatments include microdermabrasion, light therapy, custom facials and peels. The salon is located at 1401 Johnson Ferry Road, Ste. 360, (next to Learning Express) in the Target shopping center. They are open Monday through Saturday. Recipe of the Month: Roasted Pork and Sauerkraut Editor’s Note: The clock is ticking until the end of the year, but you just finished Christmas shopping and you still have to put the ham in the oven. Who has time to think about New Year’s Eve too? You do! Try this quick and easy New Year’s Eve tradition. Growing up in Cleveland, which has lots of different ethnic groups, my Italian family adopted the German (or was it Polish?) tradition of serving pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day. It was believed that combining pork with sauerkraut guaranteed luck and prosperity for the coming year. Now it’s a nice tradition for my own family. Hope you enjoy. Happy New Year!

DIRECTIONS > Preheat oven to 350 degrees. > Rinse pork and place in large roasting pan. > Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. > Cover with 1/3 of the sauerkraut. > Cover roasting pan and put in oven for 1 1/2 hours. > Remove from oven and add another 1/3 of sauerkraut. > Cover and put back in oven for another hour.

INGREDIENTS

> Remove from oven and add the remaining sauerkraut.

> 1 (10 -15 lb) Pork Shoulder

> Cover and put back in oven for another hour.

> 4 lbs Sauerkraut with Juice (canned or bagged)

> Remove from oven and enjoy!

> Salt and Pepper

• Impeccable sanitary conditions assured with disposable utensils CEO Matt Dang’s family, with 20 years in the nail care industry, recently opened its newest location in The Avenue East Cobb, conveniently centralized to shoppers from across north metro Atlanta. Dang explains that he chose the name “Parisian” because “Paris is considered the nail art capital of the world and our name reflects that French theme.” He adds that, as such,“we offer a large pallette of contemporary nail polish colors and old classic collections, as well as seasonal colors with shades and designs to match the occasion.” The variety of brands of nail polishes offered at Parisian includes: OPI, Essie®, China Glaze® and Orly®. In addition, Parisian features CND Shellac™ service, the only salon that does so in East Cobb. This unique, twoweek long lasting application will not damage regular nails, according to Dang. With their products, ambiance and personal touch service, you will enjoy the Parisian Nail Salon promise to “Indulge in Serenity.” Simply call 770-578-6666 to make an appointment, or Walk-ins welcome. The following is a listing of activities scheduled at the East Cobb Senior Center located at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta 30066. Call the East Cobb Senior Center at 770-509-4900 for reservations and/or more details. Ice Cream and a Movie: Christmas in Connecticut Monday, December 12 1 – 4pm Cost: $4/Cobb Residents; $5/Non-residents It is time for a Christmas classic and a wonderful screwball comedy! Barbara Stanwyck is brilliant as a bachelorette columnist for Smart Housekeeping.

Friday, December 2: Center Closed at Noon Blood Pressure Screening Thursday, December 1 Tuesday, December 6 Tuesday, December 20 10am – 12pm Ice Cream and a Movie: The Final Countdown Wednesday, December 7 1 – 4pm Cost: $4/Cobb Residents; $5/Non-residents It is December 7, 1941, with a tantalizing “what if” scenario. In modern times the U.S.S. Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier commanded by Kirk Douglas, gets caught in a storm and is thrust backwards in time to the eve of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Will the ship’s commander interfere with history? Will the visiting systems analyst, Martin Sheen, convince him not to? Will a rescued senator from 1941, Charles Durning, and his assistant, Katherine Ross, play an unexpected role in the future of American politics? What an intriguing plot!
