Toys for Tots Seeks Donations As the holidays are upon us and planning for Christmas arrives, it’s also time to think about doing something special for children in need. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is again under way, giving local residents an opportunity to purchase a toy for a boy and girl outside their family. Toys for Tots started more than 60 years ago when Maj. Bill Hendricks, USMCR, and a group of Marine reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed more than 5,000 toys to needy children. Hendricks’ idea caught on and was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots the following year and expanded it into a nationwide program. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. Today, Toys for Tots is the Marine Corps’ premier community action program and one of the nation’s flagship Christmas charitable causes. Toys for Tots is the only charitable endeavor within the Department of Defense which reaches outside the military establishment to give something back to the communities. Toys for Tots has enjoyed over a half century of success because of the support of millions of caring Americans, local communities, and corporate America plus the dedication and hard work of thousands of U.S. Marines. Toys for Tots is a program which brings all elements of a community together in a common cause for three months each year. It is a program dedicated to helping in the development of our nation’s most valuable natural resource: our children. The shiny new toy at Christmas lets these youngsters know that someone cares. Area Toys for Tots coordinator Gunnery A.T. Wilson is in charge of finding enough money and toys to fulfill the 900,000 toy requests for children in the 11 counties throughout Metro Atlanta. “Many people in Metro Atlanta have been hit hard this year so we are working extra asking for more donations and drop-off points,” says Mr. Wilson. Toys for Tots collects only new toys. Organizers ask that toys brought to drop-off points be unwrapped so they can be sorted and given to the right child. Toys are to be appropriate for children from birth to 12 years. Toys will be accepted until December 21. For information regarding volunteering or hosting an event, contact Mr. Wilson at 678-887-5179 or e-mail: santa@atlantatoysfortots.com.

Parent Strategies for Student Success with the Common Core Standards By Jena Ritchie, East Cobb County of PTAs Family Engagement Chair The majority of East Cobb families would likely assert that their child’s education is a high priority. They would go on to attest that many residences are selected in this community precisely because the schools have a reputation of excellence in education. Simply by virtue of establishing a particular mailing address, it’s fair to say we’ve already made a significant investment in our children’s academic future. But, a street address in a high performing school is only a small piece of student achievement. The fact is, regardless of school ranking, parental involvement is still the greatest indicator in determining student success. It has been witnessed time and again that even where a particular parent or guardian lacks their own educational accomplishments, consistent engagement and investment in their child’s education is of paramount importance. A primary goal of PTA is empowering parents with a variety of resources and opportunities to help them succeed in championing their child’s academic achievements, as well as supporting communication and accountability within schools. As a community, we do already contribute considerable finances and supplies to our classrooms - more than the national average - as many here are fortunate to be able to do so. However, as parents, we can fail to realize the true return on our investment by underestimating the power and potential of the parent-child alliance. Research consistently shows that the family engagement ‘habit’ is the most effective stimulant for exponentially increasing a child’s development, regardless of economic variables. “The Family Engagement in Education Act (H.R.1821/S.941) incentivizes schools and districts to meaningfully engage families to close the achievement gap. This bill was introduced on May 10, 2011, in the House of Representatives …Research demonstrates that family engagement in a child’s education increases student achievement, improves attendance, and reduces the dropout rate.” Excerpt from http://www.pta.org/4135.asp Fortunately, a lot of the hard work for adopting this habit has already been done for parents in regard to supporting students with the new standards now being implemented in our schools. The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is an effort designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing a set of common, voluntary, internationally-benchmarked academic standards

in mathematics and English language arts. In conjunction with the rollout of this progressive new curriculum aimed at encouraging critical thinking skills, PTA has developed a grade-level specific series of easily obtainable Parents’ Guides. These handy four-page reference tools are downloadable for free and smartly summarize learning goals while offering tips for engaging students and strategies for communicating with teachers. Online access to these documents is quick and simple from the PTA website at www.pta.org/common_core_state_standards.asp and www.pta.org/4996.htm. Built on appreciable assessment data identifying college and career readiness as well as global educational influences, these new standards create a compact for more successful partnerships in learning. Ideally, these conscientiously constructed measures serve to ensure that families of all backgrounds have uniform access to quality, consistent educational expectations. At minimum, they aspire to assist us in co-creating a meaningful meeting of minds by establishing common ground from which to grow. Here in East Cobb, these goals respond readily with resources to counter performance gaps by offering mass distribution of information helping us to overcome some of the usual ambiguously cited snares often associated with public education shortcomings like ‘increasing costs”, “budget cuts”, “bloating class sizes” and similar issues which are not new or even unique to our community. In practice, it may be different for each individual; however, answers do exist to advocate on behalf of our children in the name of education. By each of us enthusiastically reaching out in working together cooperatively and collectively (parents-students-teachers-communities), we commit to witness the future promise of these worthwhile endeavors. Deciding early to participate in the solution, adopting an attitude of action, combining forces, sharing resources and partnering in our sense of personal responsibility will allow us to recognize and provide for the diverse educational needs of a broader population of children. This is the ultimate intent behind public education, even as our students and society continue to evolve.

“Georgia Gives Day” is December 6

Touch. Smell. Taste. Hear. See.

The Georgia Center for Nonprofits (GCN) announced its inaugural statewide day of giving – Georgia Gives Day – on Dec. 6. The purpose of Georgia Gives Day is to bring the state together as one community, to raise as much money and awareness as possible for Georgia nonprofits within a 24-hour, flash mob of giving. One hundred percent of proceeds will go directly to participating nonprofits by donating through www.GAgivesday.org. The initiative, which was officially declared Georgia Gives Day by Gov. Deal, provides citizens across the state with an easy platform to recognize nonprofits across a variety of sectors for their invaluable efforts. Inspired by other successful days of giving in states such as Washington, Colorado and Minnesota, GCN developed its own effort to promote community awareness and the mission of nonprofits that serve as the backbone for many communities across the state. “Nonprofits touch nearly every part of our lives,” said Karen Beavor, president and CEO of GCN. “We are very excited to give Georgians an opportunity to truly recognize the nonprofit organizations in their community and give where they live.”

Local Firm Finds Employment for Special Needs Adults Briggs & Associates believes that communities are not whole until all participants are valued and contributing. When the organization was founded in 1989, the company provided employment services for a few adults with developmental disabilities, which meant helping them find and maintain employment in their communities. Today, Briggs & Associates has served thousands and has expanded to work with people with mental health issues, students with disabilities transitioning out of high school, as well as people who desire to move off welfare. The organization works with the individuals to match their interests and ability to real, competitive paying jobs ss Mary Simpson with Michael, an employee at Transfiguration Catholic Church.

and then provides them the job coaching and support they need to be successful. Briggs & Associates is actively seeking employers in the East Cobb area who are creative and willing to allow these dedicated people to go to work. There is no cost to the employers for their services. They only pay the employee for the work they do as Briggs is funded by The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. Mary Simpson, an East Cobb resident and a Job Specialist for Briggs & Associates, has found that individuals who are employed gain independence, learn new skills and are proud to be contributing members to the community. Their employers gain from the ability to make a difference, expanding diversity in the workplace, increased efficiencies for many jobs, as well as low turnover. Briggs & Associates is a nationally recognized “Specialty Employment Agency” designed to assist any person who needs non-traditional support to find and/or maintain a job. Simpson shared, “We serve individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) and Mental Health diagnosis (MH).” The owner/founder of the organization, Jennifer Briggs, believes passionately that “there is a place and a means for everyone in work and in life. I love working for this company because it is so heart based. The individuals we work with are no different than anyone else. They have skills, talents, strengths, as well as weaknesses,” said Simpson. “The difference I have noticed in working with them is that, due to the additional obstacles they have faced in their lives, they are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. They simply want to go to work.” While this article is specific to the East Cobb Area; Briggs & Associates provides services throughout the state of Georgia. She is known in the community as an advocate for local students ss Karen Hallacy and public education. Hallacy was nominated for her passion for helping the community through her involvement, especially in the Parent Teacher Association at the local, council and state levels. “Karen Hallacy is someone who gets involved and is making a difference in our community,” wrote Attorney General and East Cobb resident Sam Olens on the Citizen of the Year nomination form. “In any given week you can find Karen down at the Capitol talking to legislators about a bill that affects children and education, at a civic association meeting reporting on pending or proposed legislation, making sure that the meetings of a variety of groups are taking place according to ‘Roberts Rules of Order,’ leading a committee meeting for the PTA, or simply being a mom cheering on the band at the local high school football game. Karen leads by example and we are fortunate to have someone with her passion and commitment as a resident of East Cobb.” Many schools, education councils and community organizations have benefitted from Hallacy’s service and leadership, including the Eastern Cobb County Council of PTAs, the Georgia PTA, Neighborhood Safety Commission, the Cobb Chamber’s Partners in Education program and Business Education Committee, and the Cobb Board of Education. She is an active member of the East Cobb Civic Association and the National Charity League, where she currently serves as Parliamentarian. Cobb Christmas Keeps Holiday Spirit Alive Is that Santa’s sleigh or a Cobb County Transit bus? It’s Cobb Christmas’ special Stuff-A-Bus program. Cobb Christmas partners with Cobb County Department of Transportation and Cobb Community Transit (CCT) to create the county’s most unique and memorable holiday program, Stuff-A-Bus. Think of Stuff-A-Bus as the opposite of Santa’s sleigh: Santa uses his sleigh to deliver gifts and Cobb Christmas makes a CCT bus a Stuff-A-Bus sleigh for collecting toys for needy families The week prior to Cobb Christmas’ Annual Distribution, a CCT bus travels through the county to StuffA-Bus host sites gathering donations of food and toys. Host sites include businesses, schools and other entities that have organized toy and food drives. This program would not be successful without the help of local businesses, schools, and other organizations that serve as host sites for Stuff-A-Bus. Volunteers at these locations organize food and toy drives and begin promoting and collecting in November. A Cobb Christmas representative schedules a date and time for the bus to make a stop at their location to collect the items which have been donated. All donations are stored and transported to Jim Miller Park, the Cobb Christmas Distribution Site-during distribution week. Individuals are encouraged to drop off donations at any of the Stuff-A-Bus scheduled stops. Each year Cobb Christmas partners with Cobb County Transit to host Stuff-A-Bus toy drives around the community. Cobb Christmas, Inc. is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization started in 1963 by The Center for Family Resources (then known as the Cobb County Emergency Aid Association, Inc.). The group’s mission has always been to assist low-income families of Cobb County at Christmas time. The early years were made possible through community involvement from groups such as the American Legion, Cobb Jaycees and United Way of Cobb County. In 1978, the Christmas program became independent. Today Cobb Christmas is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the county. The organization will need approximately 400 volunteers for this year’s toy distribution and set-up. If you would like to volunteer your time or donate to Cobb Christmas, please visit www.cobbchristmas.net. Here are ways you can help Cobb Christmas:

f Stuff stockings. We need stockings with small, inexpensive gifts (including bath and toiletry items, but no food or candy). “Stuffed” stockings should be labeled by age and gender. Each child served by Cobb Christmas receives a stuffed stocking, so we need over 4,000 of them. f Work set-up or distribution. We occupy Jim Miller Park from Monday, December 10th, through Sunday, December 16th. This year we will need more than 400 volunteers to make it all happen. This includes setting up the warehouse, managing it and distributing toys to each client family. f Participate on a committee. Work takes place yearround for Cobb Christmas. We are always in search of volunteers who wish to be involved in the planning and execution of fulfilling our mission.

Cobb Christmas Stuff-A-Bus Stops December 7 • 12:30-1:30pm Salon Three 13 2663 Canton Road, Marietta 30066 December 7 • 2-3pm Bank of America 210 Town Park Drive, Kennesaw 30144 December 10 • 11am-12pm Southern Polytechnic 1100 South Marietta Parkway, Marietta 30060 December 11 • 2-3pm One Overton Park 3625 Cumberland Boulevard, Atlanta 30339 December 12 • 8:30-9:30am Cobb Department of Transportation 1890 County Services Parkway, Marietta 30008 December 12 • 10-11am Cobb County Government Offices 30 Waddell Street, East Park Square, Marietta 30060

f Host a toy drive. This can be at your office, place of business, with your civic organization, in your neighborhood or at your church. On average we give four to five toys per child and need around 16,000 toys for over 4,000 children who will be registered.

Walton Grad Starts Gluten-Free Muffin Business

Experience Joy at its

JUICIEST

Since she was a teenager, East Cobb native Frances Shaw (Walton High School, Class of 2006) has been dealing with fibromyalgia, a gluten intolerance, and several other medical conditions. Due to her health, she had to leave her studies at the Savannah College of Art & Design, and was homebound for a year. Instead of seeing the situation as a setback, she took the opportunity to develop delicious “allergy smart” muffins so that she and others with food allergies might still enjoy baked goods. “My younger brother ss Frances Shaw started eating a bunch of zucchini muffins, then his friends starting eating them, then my friends would come over and eat them,” Shaw says. “I thought, maybe I should do something with these.” And Frannie’s Gluten-Free Muffins was born. These “allergy smart” muffins are free of not only gluten, but also dairy, nuts, soy and yeast, so that most food allergy concerns are eliminated. Blueberry, chocolate chip and lemon zest are some of the flavors offered by Frannie’s Gluten-Free Muffins. There’s even a vegan banana muffin available as well. All the fruits and vegetables used are organic, and the eggs are antibiotic free, which add to the muffins’ health benefits. With so many gluten free products coming onto the market, it’s nice to have some organic, local creations where as much emphasis is put on taste as on being gluten-free.

Now her muffins are available at Kroger supermarkets throughout metro Atlanta as well as 200 other locations in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina – so when you’re traveling you can easily pick up some tasty gluten free snacks! ssDr. Matthew Miller and his dog, Marty Making time in your schedule for annual wellness visits for your pets is not always easy. For many owners who have older animals, larger breed dogs, or pets that don’t travel well, a trip to the vet can be difficult and time-consuming, especially if the owner has multiple pets. Some animals miss annual visits or the pet doesn’t see a vet until it is sick, making an already stressful event even worse.

“We were so happy to have Dr. Miller come to our house. Chewbacca used to hate his trips to the vet and it was easy for me to find an excuse not to go,” shares Marie, a pet owner and client of Miller Mobile Veterinary Services. “And with a baby on the way I know it’ll be even harder. But now that Dr. Miller comes to us it’s much easier and Chewie loves his vet.” Based out of Marietta, Miller Mobile Veterinary Services makes house calls all over East Cobb and the Metro Atlanta area. In addition to regular wellness visits for vaccines and other preventive care, Dr. Miller provides a full range of veterinary services, diagnostics, and surgery. Surgeries are performed at a partner animal hospital in East Cobb. “Providing the convenience of in-home medical care while still offering surgeries is ideal,“ says Dr. Miller, who has earned a reputation as a skilled surgeon and was recognized by Atlanta Magazine as one of Atlanta’s “Best Vets” in the November 2010 issue. “I don’t have to refer pets who need surgery to another practice so I’m able to provide a continuity of care – and that makes the owner and pet more relaxed.”

Are Vitamins and Minerals Really Necessary For My Health? This question has been debated for years and the controversy persists. The most common argument is, “I would rather get all my nutrition from food.” The most positive response, “My body needs many nutrients and it seems impossible to get them all from food especially with the quality of our food.” Here are some common misconceptions: Misconception: You can take many water-soluble vitamins because your body will ‘throw off” whatever it does not need. Fact: Your body WILL recognize and utilize the vitamin. Many vitamins are incomplete and your body will take out of its reserves what nutrients are necessary to make it complete. After continued use, the body’s reserves will run out, especially if you take a high potency vitamins - it may cause nutritional deficiencies!

Examples: Ascorbic Acid is NOT Vitamin C; it is the antioxident part of the Vitamin C. If you were to take 500 mg. of complete Vitamin C it would be bigger than a golf ball. Vitamin E also, Alpha tocopherol and is NOT the complete vitamin.



Q: Can a good diet provide me with adequate nutrition? A: Yes, you could get all of the nutrients you need from a good diet. The problem is obtaining quality food. The methods used to grow and process foods severely depletes the food’s nutrients. A cup of spinach in 1954 would require sixty four cups in 2001 to obtain the same quantity of iron. Dr. Jensen’s book, Empty Harvest, states, “Long-term deprivation of a microscopic quantity of one essential nutrient in our diets alters the precise and vital balance of the body’s chemicals. Ultimately, chemical imbalances in the body result in symptoms that are possibly the precursors to chronic or fatal diseases.”

Q: Are all vitamins the same? A. The basic difference is where the vitamin is derived from and how complete it is. Fractions of vitamins are not the same as the complete vitamin. Q: Will I always have to take nutrition? A: This is a similar question to, “Will I always have to put gas in my car?” Until food processing methods become more wholesome, our bodies will be deficient. So many vital nutrients are lacking in the food we eat. Therefore with our current state of food supply and farming, supplements are the best way I know to maintain proper nutrition. At this time there are complete supplements but mostly they can only be gotten from a nutritionist. Q: I don’t feel bad; why should I take vitamins? A: This is precisely the best time to take them. Supplying your body with the proper nutrients it needs, it is much more likely to function properly. In order to ensure that vitamins are contributing to health and not harm, you need to make sure that your vitamins are from a healthy source rather than from a chemistry lab. We can help you get through this confusion . I look forward to hearing your comments and welcome your questions. Please contact us on yourhealthmatterstous.com.

Red Cross Calls for Blood Donors The American Red Cross urges individuals to donate blood as soon as possible. The current blood supply has dropped critically low throughout the Southeast. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors. During the holiday season, blood shortages often occur because individual donations decrease, along with the number of organizations that are able to sponsor blood drives. Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors with type O (positive and negative), B negative and A negative blood should consider an automated red cell donation, a process in which only red cells are donated. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.
