PUBLISHER’S NOTE Just as I was overcoming my writer’s block to draft another publisher’s note, my son texted me that basketball superstar Kobe Bryant had died in a helicopter crash. The crash took the lives of nine people, including Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna. When a public figure meets an untimely death— as well as a child—it often generates a conversation about our mortality. I had originally intended to tie in this February Publisher Cynthia Rozzo

unexpected death deepens my reflection. “You asked for my hustle, I gave you my heart,” is a famous Kobe quote. This edition of the EAST COBBER spotlights our neighbors like the Pope High School Wrestling Team becoming state champs (page 42); the Big Chicken Chorus’s Singing Valentines (page 15); to author Eric Litwin (page 44) reading his book to Mountain View students. Each person is working hard, putting their heart in their efforts, and leaving a legacy while also enriching our East Cobb community. Every four years we add an extra day to February and call it a Leap Year. This leap ahead helps properly align our 365-day calendar with the earth’s rotation. So, on February 29, we get an extra 24 hours more than we normally would have in a year. How cool is that!? So that made me do some thinking. What am I going to do to make this extra day worthwhile? Here it is, a whole bonus 24 hours, just plopped right into my lap. So, unlike Kobe Bryant, my time on this earth isn’t over—and on February 29—I get an extra day to be alive. To spend one more day with my family. One more day to make my dreams become a reality. One more day to help somebody. Life itself is relatively short, so show love to your loved ones, do what you love and love what you do — you never know when it’s your time.

to the 1990s when she was studying abroad at Zhongshan University in Guangzhou, China. “The country and the city were both transitioning during that time,” explains Love. “You would see new modern high rises with small, dilapidated shacks interspersed among them, revealing a drastic economic contrast. Through this experience, I began to see the role that real estate plays in a community, and I thought how exciting to be part of that enterprise.” Fast forward a few years, Love became an operations manager for an Atlanta investor who flipped distressed homes (mainly short sales) where she helped facilitate short sale transactions, helping families find a way out of foreclosure. Then in 2010, she became licensed to sell real estate in Georgia. Love wore several different hats in the industry as her career progressed, including short sale facilitator, real estate paralegal, and commercial property developer. In 2016, she found her niche in residential sales at Crown Realty Group. Her sales volume climbed over the next three years to 16.9 million in sales volume in 2019 and 57 units sold.

The Cobb County School District has scheduled a winter break for students from February 17-21. A chilly week at home in the middle of the winter, with nothing to do, is many a parent’s worst nightmare. PTAS CELEBRATE THE ARTS! By Jackie Southern, Chair, East Cobb County Council of PTAs Reflections Committee

or over 50 years, the National PTA has promoted Reflections, its arts appreciation and recognition program. Each year, students in grades K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through Film Production, Dance Choreography, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. This year, students created their vision of “Look Within.” The East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC) received artwork from 26 schools, 470 entries advanced to the ECCC PTA level, then submitted 126 winning entries to the Georgia PTA.

On January 23, an awards ceremony was held to honor the East Cobb students who were selected to advance to the state level. Some students’ work will be featured on a slideshow presentation, and it will be a wonderful evening celebrating the creativity and hard work of our East Cobb students. Congratulations to the ECCC winners and good luck at the next stage of the competition!

BIG CHICKEN BARBERSHOP CHORUS OFFERS SINGING VALENTINES

t’s that time of year again! Do something unique and very memorable for that special someone in your life! The Big Chicken Chorus will be delivering Singing Valentines on Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15. Singing Valentines can also be delivered by phone anywhere in the continental U.S. A surprise visit from a quartet, dressed in tuxedo’s with a Valentine’s Day red vest and bow tie, will deliver two songs, a live red rose, a card with your personal message, and two sentimental love songs to your significant other at the location of your choice - home, office, school, restaurant, or other public location. These deliveries can also provide a memorable experience at the office as a gift from the staff to the special receptionist, office administrator or the occupant of the “corner office,” or to the staff from management.

WHY BABY TEETH MATTER As parents, there is nothing more special than seeing our child smile. While the baby teeth that make up those smiles may only be temporary, it is important to remember that they serve a very important role in our child’s health and development and must be meticulously cared for until they fall out. Baby Teeth Aid In Proper Nutrition. Children use their baby teeth to bite and chew food. Effective chewing allows a child’s body to readily digest the nutrients in food. If a child is unable to chew their food properly, either due to early tooth loss or dental pain from cavities, they may experience nutritional deficiencies. Baby Teeth Are Important In Speech and Facial Development. In order to form words and develop speech, children must learn to move their tongue,

lips and cheeks against their teeth in a synchronized manner to produce specific sounds. For words to be pronounced correctly, a child’s baby teeth must be present and in proper position. If baby teeth are lost early or severely decayed, a child may experience speech delay or an inability to speak clearly. Baby teeth also serve an important role in facial development. They provide support to both the lips and developing facial muscles, which in turn give shape to the child’s face. Baby Teeth Guide Permanent Teeth Into Proper Position. Baby teeth serve to save space for and guide the permanent teeth into proper position. If a baby tooth is lost early due to trauma or decay and is not replaced, the surrounding teeth may drift into that space. The permanent tooth will then have less room to come in

and may grow in crooked or crowded causing more severe orthodontic issues than the child otherwise would have experienced. Baby Teeth Can Affect A Child’s Self-Esteem and Concentration. Neglecting the health of a child’s baby teeth can have emotional and social consequences as well. Children who experience early tooth loss or have visible signs of decay often have lower self-esteem and self-confidence. Children who experience dental pain due to tooth decay or infection may also find sleeping, eating, speaking, and concentrating in school difficult. Studies have shown that children with poor oral health earn lower grades than those with good oral health. On the other hand, having healthy baby teeth and a healthy smile can build a child’s confidence and allow them to thrive in social settings such as the classroom.

It is never too early to teach children about the importance of their oral health. Helping children develop good oral care habits with their baby teeth is important because these habits are likely to continue with them into adulthood and will shape how they care for their permanent teeth. SOPE CREEK ELEMENTARY STUDENTS CHANGING THE WORLD THROUGH STEM create lessons that give students the opportunity to serve as young agents of change in their community. As a result, a culture of care has spread throughout the school. After learning about the importance of conserving wildlife habitats, first-grade students at Sope Creek jumped into action. They decided to help the Atlanta Zoo by designing enclosures specific to the most endangered animals. “It is exciting to see our students demonstrating compassion and feeling empowered enough to imagine bold solutions” explained first-grade teacher Nadia White. tewardship, citizenship, and leadership are central to the mission and vision at Sope Creek Elementary School where young students develop skills to be the leaders of tomorrow. The nearly 1,200 students – from preschool to fifth grade – have used STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education as a catalyst to change the world.

As second-grade students explored past and present Georgia, their research unearthed the pollution issue currently impacting the Savannah River. So, in partnership with Coca-Cola’s litter catcher initiative, students created their own designs to decrease water pollution, doing their part as stewards of their home state. To fight the declining bee population, Sope Creek fourth-graders planted wildflowers in the garden beds right outside their classroom doors. Thanks to the 9- and 10-year-olds research and planning, the bees will have a reliable food source.

“We have helped our students view the world as problem solvers. Even our youngest learners know that they have the potential to change the world,” said Sope Creek Principal Dr. Doug Daugherty.

Each year, Sope Creek Elementary chooses a theme. This year’s theme “Hero Makers” not only emphasizes the importance of being heroes but also helps students recognize their potential of being the heroes of today and tomorrow.

ou’re invited to a special baby shower! This Leap Day, February 29, come learn all about Chattahoochee Nature Center’s (CNC) efforts to help injured wildlife during a wildlife baby shower. The special event is sponsored by Northside Hospital, which has guaranteed matching all donations, up to $5,000. The wildlife team rely heavily on donations to do their work and accommodate the animals. Without the help of the community, CNC will not be able to support all the baby animals who come to us this year. This day is a great opportunity to meet wildlife technicians and learn about what they do as well as get up close to some amazing animals. Learn from the professionals what to do when you find a baby animal. On this day, CNC will have unique wildlife walks with specialists dishing all the best stories about our rehabilitated animals as well as fun and games for the whole family to learn about their favorite baby animals. CNC takes in nearly 40 young birds of prey (raptors) and reptiles each year for rehab, with hundreds of calls a month of people who have found animals and are looking for advice. The majority of young raptor patients come in due to nest loss, such as from a storm or trees being cut down, and from good Samaritans who might not know when an animal is actually in need of help. Native reptiles in Georgia, such as turtles, are independent from birth and do not need a parent around. As a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, CNC treats over 600 injured raptors and reptiles each year. Certified wildlife technicians care for the animals. f you are interested in serving your community and earning a little extra cash, the Cobb County Board of Elections is looking for people to work at voting precincts during the 2020 elections cycle. They are looking for applicants who take pride in their work, are patient, take direction well, and who pay attention to detail. A poll worker must be a U.S. citizen, Cobb County resident, at least 16 years old, be able to read, write and speak English and not have any felony conviction in the past 10 years. Poll workers must attend at least one mandatory training class before working at the poll. New workers are paid $115 for Election Day, $30 for the training class and $15 for helping to set up the poll. Workers must arrive at 6 a.m. on Election Day and stay until all voters leave and closing procedures are completed. You must provide your own transportation to your scheduled training class and to the poll on Election Day. HOW TO PICK A PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

tarting your child in preschool for the first time is not only a big event in his or her life; it is also a very important decision for you and a milestone in your parenting journey. Take some time to ask the right questions of the program and you can easily determine if you’ve found the right place. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a Preschool:

1. CHECK OUT THE SCHOOL’S LICENSING

• Ask to see copies of all the licensing and certifications required by the state agencies that regulate the program. • Does the program participate in any accreditation programs?

5. CHECK OUT THE TEACHERS

Before you even meet with the teachers, ask the program director about staff experience, training and certifications. • What is the staff/teacher-to-child ratio? • Observe the teachers to see if they interact positively with the children. • Do they create a warm and secure environment?

6. FIND OUT ABOUT THE PROGRAM ITSELF

Because children are growing intellectually (cognitively), socially, physically and emotionally, learn how the school addresses each of these areas of growth.

2. HOW DOES THE SCHOOL SCHEDULE MATCH YOUR NEEDS?

• Is there a balance of play and learning time, as well as group and individual activities?

3. GET A FEEL FOR THE SCHOOL

• Do the children have outdoor play? Look for a secured, fenced outdoor play area with age-appropriate supplies and equipment that encourage motor skills.

Ask about the type of scheduling that is available: full-time, part-time, flexible scheduling. Make sure the times and days coordinate with your work schedule.

Visit the schools you are considering – start with an open house, interview the directors of the schools you felt positively about after the open house, talk to some of the teachers. Consider: • How warm and welcoming does the school feel? • How nurturing does the school staff seem to be? • Does it seem that staff/adults and children get along and feel comfortable with one another? • Do the children look happy?

4. LEARN ABOUT SAFETY AND HEALTH POLICIES Discuss with the Director general safety features of the program so that you can be sure that your child will be well taken care of and the environment is safe. • Are staff members trained in CPR and first aid? • Learn the program’s illness and medication policy. Are the children required to have immunizations and regular health evaluations? Is there a hand washing policy in effect? • Does the facility have a monitored entrance, accessible emergency information and a child release policy? Investigate the programs policy on open-door parent visitation. Is there a check-in and check-out procedure? Ask to see a copy of the parent handbook. All center policies and procedures will be contained in the parent handbook. • What does the school do when there is a behavior problem? • Do you feel comfortable with their approach?

8. REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN MAKING THIS DECISION!

Be sure to speak to friends or other parents in your neighborhood or area – often times you can get the best information from the opinions of other parents whose judgment you trust – they may have had older children who attended various preschools and so have had firsthand experience. These 8 steps should help you with your decision in choosing an early childhood education program, but don’t forget that it’s important to “feel comfortable” with the program and the people who will be caring for your child. For parents, the bottom line is simple: Watch closely what’s happening in the classroom, pick a preschool that you wish you had gone to, and your child will do just fine. HOW TO STAY STRONG IN THE NEW YEAR

f you are like many people, you may have made a resolution or promise to yourself that in 2020 “I’m going to get healthy,” or “I’m going to do more for myself.”

Most people who start a resolution or in January end up “falling off the wagon” or quitting their new habit by February. Here are some things you can do to give yourself a better chance of making those positive long-lasting changes stick so you don’t have to do it again next year! What worked last year in your life? What didn’t work? What could you have done better? And what did you do really well? Sit down this week and actually put pen to paper to take a look back at the entire year to see where you need to make changes and where you need to give yourself a pat on the back. Once you’ve fully reflected and given yourself a real reality check, then you’re ready to keep an open mind and move forward armed with all the knowledge about how to tackle the rest of 2020.

Working with a personal trainer can be the perfect accountability partner to help you reach your health and fitness goals. The beautiful thing about signing on to work with a trainer is that you can actually book, block out and schedule your workouts with your trainer weeks in advance. If those workouts are already in your calendar and your trainer’s calendar ahead of time, you’re much more likely to keep them and commit to them, especially with someone else keeping you in check. She ties in the storytime in the media center with what the students are learning in the classroom.

eading is the single most important thing that we do,” the author of “Pete the Cat” recently told students at Mountain View Elementary School. Eric Litwin, a former metro-area teacher, set out to write engaging books, like “Pete the Cat” and “Groovy Joe,” to get the students to love to read so they succeed in life. “If you don’t love learning, you will read less, and it won’t be as powerful,” the educator turnedwriter explained. The Mountain View students listened and sang along as the guitar-toting author read and sang from some of the students’ favorites. At least one student brought his own Pete the Cat along for the performance. The author’s visit was part of the school’s literacy initiative, which includes a PTA parent representative dedicated to literacy. “One of the things we have really focused on this year is getting the reluctant readers to pick up books,” explained Mountain View media specialist Jami O’Connor. In addition to storytime with the students, visits from famous authors, like Eric Litwin, O’Connor said

Students are now able to use Flipgrid to record up to a 60-second review on the book they are reading. Although they started the student video-reviews earlier in the year, O’Connor hopes they will have a media center full by the end of the year. The use of Flipgrid is an example of how schools across the District are transforming learning for students with the help of the Cobb Instructional Technology Team. Mountain View, which ranked in the top 5 of elementary schools in Georgia on a recent state assessment, launched a half a million-minute reading challenge this year to get students even more excited about reading outside of school. Well before the half-year mark, students had already tallied more than 267,248 reading minutes. “They are really loving it,” the Mountain View media specialist added. The students with the highest reading totals got a chance to sit down to lunch with the “Pete the Cat” author. O’Connor and Litwin both agree that literacy is crucial to the future success of students. That’s why Litwin writes books, and why O’Connor and all the educators at Mountain View work to develop their students’ desire to pick up a book and read, read, read. “I love to see that little light bulb go off when they are confident in their reading. When you get them to love reading, their writing improves, their overall confidence improves. They feel like they are more important,” O’Connor said. “I want to see books in their hands.”

AARP TAX-AIDE OFFERS FREE TAX HELP

ARP is once again helping Cobb County residents file their taxes on time and correct. There is no charge for the service, and all tax preparers are trained by AARP. AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers prepare federal, state and local tax returns for taxpayers who have straightforward tax returns starting February 3 through April 15. Membership in AARP is not required and the service is available to everyone regardless of age. Appointments are not required and electronic filing is available at all locations. Taxpayers should bring their 2018 return and all 2019 tax documents. Each taxpayer must also present their social security cards or other identification documents for themselves and all dependents. For direct deposit refunds, taxpayers must have their checkbook and a valid blank or canceled check.

UNITY NORTH PRESENTS GLOBAL MANDALA

SEARCH IS ON FOR 2020 SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

he Cobb Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications until Monday, March 30 for the Cobb Chamber’s Small Business of the Year Awards. Each year, the Chamber names the Top 25 Small Businesses of the Year from a wide pool of applicants. The 2020 Small Business of the Year will be selected from among the Top 25 small businesses.

magine walking into a huge space and laid before you is an enormous mandala. The mandala is made up of thousands of disks created by people from 50 states, 54 countries, and all 7 continents. On these circles school children from Bosnia, monks from Tibet, refugees from Syria, mothers from Egypt, survivors from Nigeria, millennials from Germany, families from Australia have all written or drawn their Hopes for Humanity. Walk through this mandala and it will change the way you think about the world, enlighten and delight you. As one participant put it, “Chill bumps, on chill bumps, on chill bumps.” The public is invited to join Unity North Atlanta, artist Sonia Osio, and the Guinness Book of World Records, to experience the Global Mandala 2020. It will be featured from Wednesday, February 12 to Saturday, February 15, 10am-9pm; and, Sunday, February 16, 9am-7:30pm. On Sunday, there will be services for “Peace & Hope” at 9am & 11:15am with a closing ceremony planned from 5-6:30pm. Whether you are looking for something unique to do for Valentine’s Day, a way for your children to experience the commonalities of love in humanity, a unique date, mediative wisdom, or something profound to discuss over dinner with friends, then come experience Global Mandala 2020.
