The outstanding people featured in this edition—from Mike and Mary Lutzenkirchen, who, after losing their son in a car accident, made it their life’s mission to educate our children on safe driving (see page 6) to the Rotary Club members putting together their annual Dog Days Run (see page 34) to the high school valedictorians and salutatorians on pages 12 &13 are right here in our backyards.

Summer is a season of warmth and is characterized by longer days, sun-kissed adventures, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a time when people embrace outdoor activities, bask in the sunshine, and create lasting memories with loved ones. A time to do just that is June 18th, Father’s Day. Thank you to all the incredible dads, and Happy Father’s Day! Summer also brings us July 4th, a cherished day of celebration, symbolizing the country’s independence. Get ready for the excitement of this year’s festivities and fireworks, detailed on pages 22 and 23.

Dr. Kerisa Harriott reminisces about her childhood days in Kingston, Jamaica, playing pretend dentist with friends. She was in awe of the transformative power braces had on her teeth over the course of four years. Today, Dr. Harriott is the primary care provider at Willow Orthodontics in Marietta, located at 1111 Johnson Ferry Road. She brings 12 years of experience and a lifetime of compassion to East Cobb residents.

Dr. Harriott’s studies began at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia, where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry on scholarship.

She then earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, also on scholarship. Following dental school, she completed a general practice residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where she was awarded resident of the year. Dr. Harriott practiced briefly as a General Dentist before starting an orthodontic residency at Stony Brook University.

Under Dr. Harriott’s leadership, Willow Orthodontics embraces a family-centered culture that reflects the East Cobb community’s values. “We’re present, we’re listening, and we really do care about our patients,” says Dr. Harriott.

LASSITER HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND SHINES BRIGHT AT THE 2024 FIESTA FLAMBEAU PARADE

On Saturday, April 27th, the Lassiter High School Marching Band stepped into the spotlight at the 2024 Fiesta Flambeau Parade held in San Antonio, Texas. Recognized for its exceptional musical talent and marching precision, the band secured this invitation through unwavering dedication, skill, and relentless hard work.

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade, acclaimed as the world’s largest illuminated night parade, draws nearly a million spectators annually and is a focal point of San Antonio’s renowned Fiesta San Antonio festivities. Featuring vibrant floats, mesmerizing lights, and enthralling music performances, the parade embodies San Antonio’s rich cultural heritage and artistic vibrancy.

The band is under the esteemed direction of James E. Thompson, Jr., Director of Bands; Jeff Harper, Associate Director of Bands; Kimberly L. Snyder, Associate Director of Bands; Kyle Parciany, Director of Percussion Studies; Megan Phillips, Color Guard Director; and Trey Gaines, Color Guard Assistant Director.

“We were incredibly honored to be a part of the 2024 Fiesta Flambeau Parade,” said James E. Thompson, Jr., “This invitation is a testament to the dedication and talent of our students, as well as the unwavering support of our school and community. It was an amazing opportunity to bring our passion for music and electrifying energy to the streets of San Antonio.”

The trip was not just about the parade; it was a chance for band members to create life-long memories with their friends. For some, it was their first time traveling on an airplane. The students enjoyed exploring San Antonio’s iconic landmarks, such as the Riverwalk, the Alamo, Historic Market Square, and SeaWorld. Band staff and chaperones enthusiastically joined in the festivities, even partaking in the thrill of riding roller coasters at SeaWorld.

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade provided an unparalleled opportunity for Lassiter High School students to represent their school and community nationally. As they marched through the heart of San Antonio, the band carried the spirit of Lassiter High School and the pride of their achievements.

EAST COBB COUNTY COUNCIL OF PTA NAMES 2024 MARGIE HATFIELD SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) named its 2024 recipients of the Margie Hatfield Scholarship at its general meeting at Kell High School in April.

Hatfield is a former ECCC PTA president, and the ECCC PTA scholarship was named on her behalf due to her diligent work and tireless commitment to the students of East Cobb.

Every year, ECCC PTA offers a $1,000 service-based scholarship to deserving seniors at each of the six high schools in the East Cobb area. Each recipient has worked hard to be successful, not just in their scholastic endeavors, but also by giving back to the community through their service and their time.

Selected from 30 applicants across five schools, the scholarship recipients are:

Andrew Herrera, Kell High School, who will attend Kennesaw State University to study Mechanical Engineering. When Andrew isn’t winning BMX races, he can be found maintaining the local BMX track, being a role model to the next generation of young racers, and volunteering at food drives for veterans.

Julia Randall, Lassiter High School, who will study Accounting at University of Georgia. Guided by the Maya Angelou quote, “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud,”, Julia has been that rainbow for her peers in starting The Joy Mission Club that supports students in the community grieving the loss of a loved one.

Ella Jeffres, Pope High School, who will attend Georgia Tech where she will study History, Technology, and Society. Ella’s passion for making the world a better place knows no bounds, as she has organized meals for families dealing with food insecurity and provided hygiene care packages for the homeless.

Timy Dang, Sprayberry High School, who will study Marketing at Georgia State University. Timy’s commitment to acts of service is drawn from his Vietnamese American culture that thrives on community and includes painting murals with pop culture references that will adorn the halls of Sprayberry for years to come.

Jennifer He, Walton High School, who will attend Princeton University to study Operations Research Financial Engineering. Through her work distributing school supplies to the homeless, Jennifer hopes to humanize their experience and build relationships with kids to inspire their academic growth regardless of income barriers.

As the largest council within the state of Georgia, the East Cobb County Council of PTAs promotes the academic achievement and well-being of all students within the 35 schools within East Cobb.

Micheal is the Scholarship Chair of the East Cobb County Council of PTAs as well as the Co-President of the Keheley Elementary PTA.

“For the Future”… a film by Riya Kumar (7th grade Simpson Middle School) has received the National PTA Award of Excellence in Film Production (Middle School division) in the 20232024 National PTA Reflections program. The Award of Excellence includes a $200 Young Artist Scholarship, Silver Medal, Certificate of Excellence, and her work will be featured in the National PTA Reflections virtual exhibition.

To be awarded the National PTA Award of Excellence, the piece must be one of the 3 or 4 top-scoring entries for its division/arts category in the nation! School winners move to the East Cobb County Council (ECCC) PTA round. Georgia PTA then judged the artwork by division, each of which encompass multiple grade levels, making these recognitions extremely selective. The first place winners advanced to the National PTA Reflections competition.

About Reflections: The National PTA Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life. Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K-12 create original works of art in response to a student-created theme. This 50+ year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.

LUTZIE 43 FOUNDATION HOSTS

10TH ANNUAL ROAD RACE

The Lutzie 43 Foundation is hosting the tenth annual Road Race 5K run. The Road Race was the first event the foundation hosted after Philip Lutzenkirchen’s passing in 2014. Since the first race, it has become a staple event in the Marietta community and to Auburn and Lutzenkirchen fans across the country. This event will be held at Lassiter High School in East Cobb--Philip’s hometown, at Lutzie 43 Field on Saturday, August 3. The race will begin at 8am.

The Lutzie 43 Foundation aims to encourage and empower all drivers to be positive ambassadors for safe driving through character development, mentorship, and real-world application. The Lutzie 43 Foundation was established in loving memory of former Auburn football player Philip Lutzenkirchen, shortly after he lost his life in a car crash in 2014. In his memory, the foundation’s 43 Key Seconds safe driving initiative aims to create the first nationally recognized symbol for distracted, impaired and unsafe driving awareness and prevention.

“The Road Race is special to the Lutzie 43 Foundation and my family as it was one of the first events the foundation hosted shortly after Philip’s passing”, says Mike Lutzenkirchen, father of Philip. The Road Race allows the local community to gather and run in honor of Philip and the legacy he left. Additionally, there is a virtual runner option that allows supporters and those that knew Philip to participate in the Road Race by running from wherever they reside. The funds raised for this event help support the Lutzie 43 Foundation’s Prepared for Life (PFL) Scholarship program and the 43 Key Seconds safe driving initiative. “We are grateful for the support we have seen over the years from the community and local businesses and hope that this year is our biggest event yet as we celebrate its milestone tenth anniversary.”

Lassiter High School has memorialized Philip by giving the football field the title “Lutzie 43 Field.” In addition to running the Road Race on-site, runners from across the country have the opportunity to participate in the Road Race. Runners can register as a virtual runner and run

from wherever they are. Runners have joined virtually from across the country over the years.

Early bird discounted registration ends July 4 at midnight. All runners will receive an official Road Race t-shirt and on-site runners will be chip timed. Virtual runners should register by July 24 to ensure the Road Race shirt arrives by August 3. All funds from the Road Race benefit the Lutzie 43 Foundation and the mission of ending distracted, impaired, and unsafe driving.

The foundation’s motto is to “Live like Lutz, Love like Lutz, and Learn from Lutz,” reflecting its desire to help others live out the many positive character attributes that Philip displayed while learning from the circumstances that led to his death. For more information, visit lutzie43.org.

You probably clean the lint trap in your dryer with every use, but when was the last time you cleaned the exhaust vent that leads outside? LADY JOSEPHINE FOUNDATION TEES UP FOR THEIR THIRD ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

It is never easy when a close family member receives a devastating health diagnosis, especially a child. During infancy, Josephine Poe was diagnosed with pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS), a rare congenital heart condition. But through love and support through numerous surgeries and medical procedures, Liz and Benjamin Poe currently live with a renewed sense of hope knowing that their daughter is fighting hard and successfully managing her life-threatening diagnosis.

In 2022, the couple founded the Lady Josephine Foundation to serve as a beacon of hope for other children and families experiencing a difficult health journey with PVS. Their mission is to show others that the condition can serve as a manageable chronic condition rather than a terminal diagnosis. Offering their support in several ways, the nonprofit facilitates PVS research to ensure an easier life for children with their families.

“We offer support to PVS families through prayer, connection, and financial means,” said Liz Poe, the organization’s Co-founder. “The foundation is 100 percent volunteer-based; all proceeds go to PVS families and PVS specific research.”

To help raise funds for their ongoing cause, the family hosts an annual golf tournament as a fun opportunity to garner awareness for PVS and engage with others experiencing similar challenges. All the funds raised provide families of

children with PVS the means and support to receive treatment. The popular event also supports research through various centers that are striving to better understand, develop, and implement life–saving treatments for PVS. With the outing continuing to remain a success, the Poe family is excited for their third annual tournament.

“We are so thankful for our local community of East Cobb for the financial support through the golf tournament,” said Co-founder Benjamin Poe. “We recognize the critical role of dedicated medical teams and the power of love and support from family, friends, and even strangers.”

While this annual event will continue to be a tradition, the foundation has big plans for the future. Liz and Benjamin hope to establish monthly PVS family support groups and develop the foundation as a platform garnering awareness so that other families can host events of their own and raise funds for PVS research and support.

“Families will have a platform to share their stories and learn from experts on how to support their children on their PVS journey,” Liz said. “We also strive to reach our annual goal of raising $150,000.”

Hey neighbor!

My name is Evan S. Porter. I live in East Cobb with my wife and two daughters, and just by knowing that, you can probably guess a few things about me.

Yes, I drive a white Honda Odyssey minivan (with absolutely no embarrassment at all). I love date nights in downtown Roswell — especially Deep Roots wine tasting room and dinner at Osteria Mattone. My family and I spend an absurd amount of time at Mabry Park and strolling the shops at The Avenue. If you ask me, summers are for High Noons at the Mountain Creek Pool pool and lazy afternoons at School House Brewing, but when it’s rainy or cold, you might find us taking shelter at Altitude Trampoline Park instead.

One thing you might not know about me, though, is that in addition to being a typical East Cobb Dad, I’m also a local author!

In 2021, after having been stuck in the house with my kids for way too long, I felt the itch to start a creative project — something to keep my brain from turning into jelly more than it already had. I also had a lot of complicated feelings about parenting swirling around inside me. So, more or less on a whim, I sat down and started writing a book about being a dad.

That first rough draft eventually became my debut novel, Dad Camp. It’s a hilarious and heartwarming story about a loving dad who drags his eleven-year-old daughter to ‘father-daughter week’ at a remote summer camp—their last chance to bond before he loses her to teenage girlhood entirely. It’s everything I think and feel and know, and wish I knew, and everything I love and am afraid of about fatherhood. But I also think the book will speak to moms, and caregivers of all kinds, or anyone that grew up with a great dad.

FAMILY SERVE DAY: UPCYCLING PLASTIC BAGS INTO DOG LEASHES

Mount Paran Christian School hosted “Family Serve Day” in which students and their families focus on serving a specific area of their community.

Local real estate owner Janice Overbeck hosted one of the Family Serve Days. Janice has hosted this event for several years with the school. Many families worked together to upcycle plastic bags into dog leashes for the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. These leashes come in handy when police officers come across stray dogs from time to time.

The families each saved and collected their used plastic grocery bags and made numerous leashes. In upcycling these plastic bags into dog leashes, families could recycle plastic bags that otherwise would have gone into the trash. Upcycling creates a better secondary use for a product than its initial intended use.

Deputy E. Harlin and Deputy J. Roberts came to The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team Office in Marietta to pick up the leashes and show their gratitude to the families that made them. The recycled leashes align with the team’s initiative to end the plastic crisis. The team is working towards limiting plastic usage and enjoys finding different sustainable options for items typically made from petroleum-based plastics.

Boo could not lose weight on her own. Originally, she joined Weight WatcEast Cobb Banking VP, Traci Newman, had a serious injury when she weighed 207 pounds. Since joining Sparkle a New You in 2021, she has maintained a weight loss of 60 pounds. Here is her story:

I have been married to Sam for 27 years. We have two children, Rachel and Adam. I have been in banking for 36 years. In my free time, I strength train, hike, dance, take nature walks, read, and study the Bible.

I was introduced to Sparkle by my friend, Angela Searcy. I noticed changes in her after a couple of months. I had recently completed a year-long recovery from a broken leg. The excess weight contributed to the severity of the injury and the lengthy recovery. I did not want to go into my older years with that burden, and I also wanted to stay off medication. I was prediabetic and had lost both my dad and brother to heart disease from diabetes complications.

I did not know how to cook, except for a few meals. Spaghetti, scrambled eggs, and Crock-Pot roast were staples. We were always on the go; our son played travel baseball. We ate fast food constantly. Concessions at the ballpark, Chick-fil-A, McDonalds, Moe’s, Chipotle, or pizza were typical meals. Now, I never eat that food. The first thing I learned on my journey was how to cook at home. I focused on simple things: lean proteins like chicken, salmon, ground turkey, grass-fed beef, and vegetables. I started using flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars. I started tracking my food with MyFitnessPal. I eliminated cream in my coffee. I broke up with sugar, only to be had on rare occasions and judiciously. I feel much better and have more energy. I sleep 7+ hours most nights.

Second, I began walking every day, usually one mile after lunch and another mile after dinner. I strength train for 40 minutes, four times a week at home. Once a week, I jog a 12-minute mile for 3 miles. When I am injured, I use resistance bands or walk.

The biggest challenge was staying motivated at a plateau 2/3 into the journey. It seemed like nothing was working. Even though the weight was unchanged, I was committed to a healthy lifestyle, so I continued to do what I was doing. I got more specific in measuring my food, and I lowered my carb intake. Eventually, the rest of the weight came off.

It is incredibly frustrating to focus only on weight loss since the loss is very volatile and subject to many different factors. My weight still fluctuates for no reason. I keep my “WHY” in mind: staying off medications and living an active, healthy life. My mindset is that this is forever, and every day, I need to make positive choices to benefit my health.

The third thing that helps me is the Sparkle community. Sparkle is the most supportive group of women I have ever met. They inspire me to challenge myself, participate in fun activities, and attend meetings, which helps me stay focused on what is important for my health.

My life is completely different now. I enjoy shopping for clothes. Having my picture taken is not a dreaded experience. I feel healthy and confident. All my health stats/tests are normal. My blood sugar is within normal range, and my doctor took “overweight” off my chart in February at my annual exam. My family eats better and is healthier and happier.

Honoring the heat and humidity of late summer, the public is invited to the 19th annual Dog Days 5K Run on Saturday, August 3. COBB-MARIETTA COLISEUM & EXHIBIT HALL AUTHORITY TO DEDICATE JOHNNY GRESHAM CIRCLE

The Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority will dedicate Johnny Gresham Circle at Cobb Galleria Centre in honor of the late, long-serving Authority board member. The dedication will be at 9:30 a.m. on June 12, 2024, at the Cobb Galleria Centre.

Gresham was a longtime East Cobb resident who served as a Cobb County political and civic leader who passed away in 2020. He was devoted to both Cobb County and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Having served on more than 50 non-profit, civic and corporate Boards of Directors, Gresham’s life’s work was in service to others. A member of the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, Gresham played running back at Georgia Tech from 1962-64. Gresham served on the Authority since 2002 and was the board’s secretary for many years.

“We are grateful to Johnny for the positive spirit he brought to this Authority and for the never-ending support he demonstrated through his leadership on the Personnel Committee,” said Jerry Nix, Chairman of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority.
