East Cobb Choi Kwang Do Celebrates 25 Years Recently, there was a ceremony at the Choi Kwang Do location in East Cobb. Fourteen students were tested for a new belt, which means they have mastered their current level and are ready for a new challenge. The most impressive part of the ceremony was that three of the recipients were a mom and her two teen children.

Because it’s low-impact, this is one sport a family can do together. In the same class session, an 8-year-old worked out alongside a 73-year-old woman, her sister and daughter. The two older women spoke limited English but were energized after their session and could easily convey the benefits Choi Kwang Do has already brought to them.

“The practice of the movement and the repetition wakes up your bones,” says Lucia Serrato. Her sister Maria likes the physical movements of punching and kicking and shares that she is getting stronger and more flexible every day.

The growing popularity of Choi Kwang Do is an indication that it’s a great way for anyone to increase their cardiovascular endurance, physical strength, flexibility and confidence.

What is Choi Kwang Do? After many years of research and study, Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi developed Choi Kwang Do in the 1980’s and has made it the most effective martial arts system in the world.

Choi Kwang Do is based on natural, easy-to-learn, sequential movements to maximize the body’s ability to create force while improving overall health. The program is based on modern scientific principles of anatomy, physiology, psychology, kinesiology, neuropsychology and biomechanics.

Unlike other martial arts, Choi Kwang Do is not designed for competition and does not have the intensity of sports training.

The system is meant for the average individual who wants to learn real-life, practical self-defense skills and achieve a greater level of health and well-being.

Because it’s a noncontact, nonfighting, noncompetitive art that stresses mental, physical, emotional and social development, Choi Kwang Do promotes nonviolent resolutions to conflict. With competition removed, students can continually develop—not against each other, but with each other. With a progressive system from White belt to highest level of Black belt, Choi Kwang Do always offers something new and challenging to learn, experience and enjoy.

Everyone is Welcome at Choi Kwang Do One of the benefits of Choi Kwang Do is that it is appropriate for all ages. Students range in years from 3 to 90, and some instructors are over 70. The primary goal of the workouts is to prevent or reduce illness and disease and to promote optimum health and longevity by minimizing degeneration of body and mind.

Choi Kwang Do provides a lot of life-long benefits when practiced at an early age and throughout life. Through Choi Kwang Do, children learn goal-setting, perseverance and self-discipline. They also learn how to defend themselves with confidence and without fighting. Choi Kwang Do classes are a fun and challenging way for children to stay active during the week. The facility even provides free birthday parties for kids.

philosophy behind Choi Kwang Do when she first met Pereira and Choi at a meeting to discuss malaria prevention. Dr. Galinski has seen firsthand the benefits of Choi Kwang Do. “When I was in my 30s and 40s, I was feeling middle-aged.

Through Choi Kwang Do, I feel like I reversed the aging process at the age of 54. Even though I work behind a desk all day, I now feel stronger and more energetic because of my workouts,” she says.

One of the benefits of Choi Kwang Do is that if you can’t make a class, you can do the movements anywhere. Dr. Galinski travels with her job but can keep up her training while on the road. Dr. Galinski is a teacher at the East Cobb location and works out every day if possible. Choi Kwang Do translates into her work life as well.

“I now take on professional and personal challenges with a Black belt mentality,” she says.

Choi Kwang Do Celebrates 25 Years To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International, Choi is conducting a seminar on March 31 at the Cobb Galleria. PTA Setting Standards for Family-School Partnerships

By Jena Ritchie, East Cobb County Council , PTA Family Engagement Chair February 16, 2012, marked an important day in education.

Parents, administrators and community partners from all over Georgia gathered in Athens to participate in the first ever Statewide Conference on Family Engagement. This remarkable endeavor was unanimously adopted in late 2010 and is a new collaborative partnership between the Georgia Department of Education and Georgia PTA for parents and educators. Nearly fifty specialized workshops were offered by field experts covering topics ranging from Early Reading and Starting with a Strong Foundation to Internet Safety and Drop-Out Prevention with many more heavy hitting lectures in between, all aimed at the ideal of developing successful strategies to support public school programs that empower students and engage families. Keynote speakers shared their expertise on current research, personal experiences and reported findings of pilot programs. The message of the need for supporting strong parent-student-teacher relationships has been well received and is well documented.

PTAs in Cobb County, as well as across the country, are implementing programming that bolsters the Six National Standards for Family-School Partnerships. These are: Standard 1: Welcoming all families into the school community Families are active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued,and connected to each other, to school staff, and to what students are learning and doing in class.

Standard 2: Communicating effectively Families and school staff engage in regular, two-way, meaningful communication about student learning.

Standard 3: Supporting student success Families and school staff continuously collaborate to support students’ learning and healthy development both at home and at school, and have regular opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and skills to do so effectively.

Standard 4: Speaking up for every child Families are empowered to be advocates for their own and other children, to ensure that students are treated fairly and have access to learning opportunities that will support their success.

Standard 5: Sharing power Families and school staff are equal partners in decisions that affect children and families, and together inform, influence, and create policies, practices, and programs.

Standard 6: Collaborating with community Families and school staff collaborate with community members to connect students, families, and staff to expanded learning opportunities, community services, and civic participation.

There is a compelling call rippling out in our communities for us to fully embrace this powerful initiative beginning with small steps at home. There are simple things all parents can do to improve their family’s school experience, like keeping personal contact information current, setting priorities that support academic achievement and actively participating in school parent-teacher conferences. Additionally, PTAs can identify a parent or teacher volunteer to serve as Family Engagement Chair who will collaborate with administration to support the school’s educational objectives. It’s worth noting that this action may look different in different schools.

Each school determines academic performance and other priorities according to multiple factors. Whether the plan is to emphasize reading, language arts, math, or science, the goal of Family Engagement is to create more opportunities for families and schools to work together to support these defined objectives.

Unity North Atlanta Church Builds Bridges, Not Walls

Principles of acceptance, community, diversity, spirituality and service mark the community of East Cobb’s Unity North Atlanta Church in Marietta. They focus on welcoming people from all walks of life.

“We honor all paths to God that teach love,” said the Rev. Richard Burdick, Unity North’s spiritual leader. “We are about building bridges of understanding between people.”

Unity North opened its 8.5-acre campus on Sandy Plains Road in East Cobb in 2000, and Burdick joined the church five years ago. Unity North is affiliated with Unity Worldwide Ministries, which was founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in Kansas City, Mo., after the pair became convinced of the healing power of prayer.

Unity is positive and practical Christianity and is more a way of life than a religion, according to Burdick.

“We seek to apply the principles taught and demonstrated by Jesus in a practical way,” Burdick said. “We teach that the same state of Christ consciousness that Jesus achieved is also available to each one of us.”

East Cobb resident Tricia Molloy has been a member of Unity North for nearly 20 years. While serving on the board there, she wrote “Divine Wisdom at Work,” a book on how to apply universal principles in the workplace. “All the principles that I write and speak about—like using affirmations, living on purpose and expressing gratitude—are promoted in the Sunday messages and throughout this positive, supportive community. Unity North feeds my soul and reminds me to make conscious choices.”

Burdick said that the diverse and eclectic community at Unity North is interested in gathering wisdom from many different sources, which is why they invite special guests to share their unique perspectives with the church. Unity North recently hosted the Tibetan Monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery in India, who created a sacred medicine 10 March 2012

On March 17 at 7 p.m., the church hosts a New Thought Revival featuring Bishop Carlton Pearson, author of “Gospel of Inclusion,” which emphasizes multi-cultural dialogue and common respect for all faith disciplines. Pearson’s book confronts the Christian church’s exclusivity as being inconsistent in spirit with the teaching of Jesus. The revival includes music from the Unity North choir, Grammy winning artist Faith Rivera, Ryan Almario’s band, Last 5 Standing and the Emerson Drummers.

Burdick said that Unity North, where the average attendance is between 400 and 550 on Sundays, is a place where “the rubber meets the road” in spiritual living and practical Christianity. Unity North offers children’s programs, classes and service opportunities that support the church’s mission to extend love to the surrounding community.

Children’s programs, including Kidz Church, Uniteens and Youth of Unity, are designed to teach spiritual principles in a God-centered, joyful, loving, respectful and safe environment. Classes and gatherings available at Unity North include yoga, meditation, Tai Chi Chuan, bible interpretation, metaphysics, contemplative prayer, dances and drumming circles.

“We are a very welcoming church, and our community honors diversity of spiritual perspectives,” said Burdick. “We have a sincere desire to connect at the level of spiritual oneness, and that is love.”

College Consultants Assist Families in the College Search Process

These East Cobb partners opened the doors to DK College Consultants in January 2012 fully prepared to help your student navigate the complicated, often stressful task of finding the right college. In doing so, they can save you time and money, cutting through the red tape of academia and streamlining the effort involved in testing, applications, deadlines, and research.

Both CPAs, Doherty and Kloess met through previous business ventures and decided in 2011 to form DK College Consultants.

According to Doherty, the initial idea grew from her experience in researching colleges with her sons. “As tennis players, both my kids were interested in playing in college,” she says. “With that in mind, we started with a list of 40 colleges to research. All the websites were different, so finding the comparative facts we needed was quite difficult — to the point of becoming stressful.”

Although Kloess’s children are younger, she has already experienced firsthand the complex web of information that students face today. “Just in attending open houses for my high school freshman, I have found the volume of information to be overwhelming,” Kloess relates.

Doherty notes that the search and selection process has become more complicated over the years. There are more than 4,000 colleges in the United States and finding the “best fit” takes a great deal of research.

The goal of DK College Consultants is to help each individual student successfully find the right college fit for him or her. Based on assessment tests as well as in-depth student interviews, DK College Consultants considers the match from personal, academic, and financial viewpoints and then directs the student through his or her own research. Students are also presented with information on career opportunities so they can make more informed decisions.

“As residents, we know how busy East Cobbers are,” says Doherty. “Our job is to help families lessen the anxiety involved in choosing a college. Once we begin working with a student, we share in the responsibility of the student’s college search, such as sending reminder emails for application deadlines or finding a SAT/ACT tutor.”

DK College Consultants adheres to the premise that there is a secondary school for all students. “There is truly a college for everyone,” says Kloess. “It’s all about being proactive. The right fit for a particular student may not follow the traditional route or be considered the norm, but it’s just right for that student.”

Chattahoochee Plantation Women’s Club Valentine Gala The Chattahoochee Plantation Women’s Club (CPWC) hosted a Valentine Gala at the Atlanta Country Club on February 11.

The annual gala featured spirited Live and Silent Auctions as more than 100 members and guests enjoyed cocktails, gourmet dining, and dancing. Their black tie event benefited MUST Ministries — Elizabeth Inn and the Nicholas House. A total of $20,000 was donated to these local non-profits. The CPWC is an organization of over 200 members and has been a primary ‘connecting point’ for outstanding women in the East Cobb Chattahoochee Plantation Community for over 40 years. The Club has a long and proud history of providing their members an expansive array of opportunities for social interaction through annual events, activities, interest groups, and special projects.

Golden “K” Kiwanis Clubs Tee It Up for the Kids Kiwanis is a Native American word that means “we trade” or “we share our talents,” and members of The Marietta and Lost Mountain Golden “K” Kiwanis Clubs are doing just that – working together to put on a successful golf outing that will benefit local charities. The 17th Annual Youth Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, May 2, at The Golf Club at Bradshaw Farm in Woodstock. Registration starts at 9:30am. Tee time is a shotgun start at 12pm. The $95 individual package covers greens fees, golf cart, lunch, and a gift bag.

The price for a foursome is $380.

100% of proceeds benefit local youth organizations.

Last year, over $26,000 was raised for distribution to deserving youth charities and programs of the Kiwanis Foundation and two Golden “K” Clubs.

Kiwanis members have been hard at work using their connections and people skills to gain sponsors, secure raffle and auction items, and to also find golfers who might like to register to hit the links as an individual or as part of a foursome. Sponsorship opportunities vary and range from $125 to $1,000.

Entries must be received by April 25 or before tournament is full, whichever happens first. Early registration is encouraged to insure a spot in the tournament. This tournament fills up early! Anyone who is interested in the Kiwanis Club’s golf tournament should call Gary Miller at 770-596-8906.

Combined membership of the Marietta and Lost Mountain Golden “K” Kiwanis Clubs is over 200. Over 50,000 hours of community service were volunteered last year. The Marietta GK Club meets Thursday at 10am at the East Cobb Senior Center. The Lost Mountain GK Club meets at the same time at the West Cobb Senior Center. The major focus of Kiwanis lies in the support and development of youth. They actively sponsor Circle K Clubs in colleges, Key Clubs in local high schools, Builders Clubs in middle schools, Terrific Kids, K-Kids Programs, and Silver Pen Writing Contests in elementary schools. In addition, Kiwanians provide mentoring and story-time reading at area schools.

It’s raining this winter afternoon, but this yellow Cape Cod style house looks amazing. It’s the perfect front entrance; harlequin painted steps, a porch swing with comfy pillows and a red diamond paned front door. Walking inside is like walking into a magazine–maybe that is because East Cobb resident and interior designer, Lesley Steinberg, has been featured in them so many times. Her slipcovers were spotlighted in Creative Home, a Better Homes and Garden publication. In 2008, The Atlanta Journal Constitution put her house on the front page of the Home and Garden section. This past year, she was featured in the Cottage Home magazine. Everywhere you turn in Lesley’s house, you find a picture of a dog or a horse. “Even over the cupola above the garage is a copper Labrador Retriever weather vane. I love animals and ‘French and English Country’ is how I would define my style,” shares Lesley. “I am not persuaded by what goes in or out. Toile isn’t that popular right now but I love it and keep it in my home....I just like to make people happy and I want everyone to feel like that in their home.” Lesley Steinberg is a lifelong resident of East Cobb County. Married to Jon Steinberg, they have two children: Caroline, 10, and Chip, 4.

East Cobber Named Honorary Style Maker by the American Craft Council Fine craft has always fascinated East Cobber Carr McCuiston. Decades ago, as a teenage student interested in unusual handcrafted art, she started working part-time at Signature Contemporary Craft, Atlanta’s premier fine craft gallery on Roswell Road. Quickly she learned the business from the ground up from legendary founder Blanche Reeves, and, years later, this East Cobb craft aficionado is now the second-generation owner of one of the oldest continuously-operated craft showcases of its kind in the nation.

Today, Carr and her gallery are recognized nationally by craft collectors of ceramics, studio pottery, sculpture, glass, textiles and jewelry, and she has adopted many of her mentor’s traditions, such as the commitment to represent emerging artists and regularly host discipline-based and thematic exhibitions of work. Currently, Signature Contemporary Craft is hosting a show in support of the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina.

Everything at her shop is distinctive and handcrafted by contemporary American craft makers, and includes dinnerware, turned wood bowls, utensils, jewelry, quilts, furniture and more. “Carr is simply the interface for great craft and the Atlanta community,” said Jim Hackney, an Atlanta board member with the American Craft Council (ACC), a national nonprofit organization that promotes the understanding and appreciation of contemporary craft.

The American Craft Council is honoring Ms. McCuiston and eleven other arts-forward Atlantans as “Style Makers” around and during the ACC Atlanta Show, March 9–11th.

Ms. McCuiston was chosen by the ACC from among nearly 50 suggested arts leaders, arts patrons, fine craft aficionados or trendsetters for the 2012 Style Makers campaign. Many of the chosen Style ss Carr McCuiston Makers champion craft, and value and invest in beautiful handmade objects. Each has deep understanding of the intimate relationship they enter into when they acquire an exquisite, handmade object, home, item of clothing, piece of music or even a meal.

“Carr has an extraordinary eye,” said Jim Hackney.

“I love the crazy fact that these artisans spend an unbelievable amount of time making that one perfect thing, and there will never be another one just like it,” said Ms. McCuiston. She incorporates fine craft into her everyday life. “I start the day by choosing which potter’s mug I will use for my morning coffee. My wedding ring is one-of-a-kind, designed and made by a local jeweler, and I collect and decorate my home with handmade pieces.” Ms. McCuiston’s support of the American Craft Council has been tremendous. She has served on the panel to select the artists at the ACC Atlanta Show, and for the second straight year, she is co-chairing the Preview Party on March 8 in support of both the ACC and the Hambidge Center.

“The Preview Party is a great experience.

It gives you a sneak peak at the fine craft, and a chance to really mingle with and get to know the artists, as well as other collectors in the metro area,” said McCuiston.

The American Craft Council will honor its Style Makers during the Preview Party March 8 and throughout the Show at the Cobb Galleria, March 9-11. Now in its 23rd year, the three-day American Craft Council Show in Atlanta at Cobb Galleria Centre is the largest juried fine craft show in the southeast, featuring more than 200 master artisans from across the US. The Atlanta Show will feature works in several new specialty categories including “Men’s Department,” which showcases cool, handmade stuff for guys, and “Foodieware,” spotlighting unique utilitarian objects designed to flatter your fare. Also returning are the popular “Greencraft” and “Handmade Under $100” categories.

Project Halo: Renovating Homes to Help Charities

Flipping homes for a profit. Sounds like old news, right?

Only Julie Stokes and Paulette DeGraw are not trying to get the biggest bang for their buck to benefit themselves. They are selflessly purchasing, renovating, and remodeling East Cobb homes only to turn around and give the profits to benefit charities in need.

Project HALO (Helping and Loving Others) was started

by Stokes and DeGraw in 2011. Their mission statement is “to purchase distressed houses, renovate them, and turn them into homes. 100% of the profits from the sale of these homes are used to help the homeless, the hungry, and those in need-both locally and internationally: men, women, and children.”

Julie Stokes was born and raised in East Cobb where her two daughters now attend Pope High School. Paulette DeGraw is the mother of five children and has lived in East Cobb since she was in high school. She also is the designer in charge of the remodeling of the Butternut house through her company, tigerlilydesigngroup.com. *Atlanta Mission Women’s and Children’s services are provided at My Sister’s House, a 264 bed facility that offers overnight shelter and residential discipleship programs for homeless women and women with children.

Their first project was a Chimney Lakes subdivision home on Butternut Way. After the renovation, it has all the modern updates a homebuyer would be looking for while still managing to keep the sought-after colonial charm.

The completion of their first renovation was punctuated by the home being listed on the FMLS on February 13th.

This particular renovation’s profits will go to renovate My Sister’s House* at the Atlanta Union Mission and SafeHouse Outreach. Stokes says they hope to broaden their reach to other charities with future projects to include other missions, schools, and charities overseas.

As if that’s not enough, their generosity is spreading.

Stokes says her favorite part of the project is “seeing different contractors and workers come in and get excited about

To date more than $100,000 has been raised and donated to provide scholarships, support the growth of local high school and youth lacrosse, and fund teen safe-driving initiatives in memory of Oswald and his love for the game.

“We have expanded our mission this year to also include helping teens make the right ‘life’ decisions”, said Bruce Oswald, Andrew’s father and President of the Andrew J. Oswald Memorial Fund, Ltd. “We have lost too many lacrosse players over the last eight years to accidents, suicide, fraternity hazing and other incidents. Our goal is to work with area players, coaches and parents to help improve decision-making and communication.”

I would recommend looking at the Georgia Secretary of State web site. You’ll want to dig deep to get an idea of his or her business history. This means requesting — and duly verifying — proof that he or she is currently state licensed, paying employees legally and carrying workers’ compensation, property damage and liability insurance. Membership with a reputable professional association is also a good sign. On a similar note, find out if the contractor has ever declared bankruptcy or if anyone has ever taken legal action against him or her.

What’s the latest craze to hit homes across America?

It’s Water Gardening and people are jumping in on it, with both feet (literally). A water garden is a simple water feature, better known as a garden pond. Now, don’t think it’s one of those cement, mucky, dirty-looking green fish ponds you may have seen before. A water garden is a living ecological entity. It has a waterfall, rocks, water lilies, aquatic flowers, underwater lights, and of course, beautiful, colorful fish. The water is crystal clear and you can see all the way to the bottom. It’s a very hot trend right now, and a recent poll (USA Today) reported that water features topped the list of landscape improvements homeowners want to make in the next year.

Water gardens are clean and very low maintenance.

You can maintain one in as little as 15 minutes, once a month. You don’t even have to feed the fish! Mother Nature takes care of everything. “I love how easy it is to clean my water garden, I just open the skimmer, empty the net, and I’m done. Before, I’d spend hours trying to clean it and it was still dirty,” says George Robinson.

Water gardens can be installed practically anywhere.

They only require about two feet of water. It doesn’t matter if you live in the city or the suburbs, if you have a big backyard or small one. A water garden is custom designed to fit you. “I have a small house in the city with a tiny backyard. I never dreamed a water garden could fit back there, but it did! I love it. It’s made my dull backyard into my own little tropical paradise,” says Jean Rogers.

People love water gardening because they are soothing, tranquil, and a haven of rest. In a day and age where you are constantly bothered by traffic, cell phones, comput ers, and faxes, it’s very soothing to have a place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

One amazing thing people find with water gardens is that they can actually communicate with each other again.

Unlike a TV, which actually distracts and hinders communication, people find they can strengthen relationships and have better conversations around their pond.

As Mary Cartwright observes, “The kids are just fascinated with the water garden. They sit there for hours watching the fish. Even our dog, Spike, likes to play with the fish. I much more prefer my kids interacting with nature than playing those mind-numbing, violent video games.”

Here in Atlanta, there are thousands of great water gardens, but sadly, there are many dysfunctional ones as well.

Annual Indoor Yard Sale to Benefit Animal Rescue Groups Mostly Mutts is heading up their fourth annual indoor yard sale at the Climatized Self Storage in Kennesaw during the weekends of March 2-4, March 9-11 and March 16-18.

Gently used and new items will be sold by about eight area animal rescue organizations in approximately 20,000 square feet of space donated by Climatized Self Storage. 100% of the sale proceeds will benefit the animal rescues in their efforts to provide care and vetting to some of the 70,000+ homeless animals in the Atlanta area.

“Our volunteers handpick the items that are graciously donated by our community,” says Paige O’Neill, Founder of Mostly Mutts. “Last year’s sales generated more than $20,000 for the animals.” Items for sale include antiques, furniture, electronics, pet supplies, home and garden décor, children’s clothing, games, toys, collectibles, sporting goods, etc.

The sale will be held at Climatized Self Storage of Kennesaw, located at 1125 Roberts Boulevard, Kennesaw.

Mostly Mutts is an all volunteer-based, licensed shelter and 501(C)3 organization that has placed nearly 3,000 animals since its inception in 2004. The mission of Mostly Mutts is to work closely with animal control officers and other rescue organizations to reduce the number of animals euthanized at local shelters. According to Stavropoulos, his interest in purchasing the franchise was driven by the company identity. “It’s a brand I believe in,” he says. “As the owner and on-site operator, I am committed to giving my customers a great dining experience.”

Choosing favorite dishes in his restaurant is an impossible task, says Stavropoulos. “Everything’s good,” he responds, “from strawberry crepes to fresh salads to hamburgers. I like them all.”

However, Stavropoulos does favor some new menu choices called SIMPLE & FIT, which are meals under 600 calories. An example of this type of meal is the Blueberry Harvest Grain ‘N Nut pancakes topped with blueberries and sliced bananas served with scrambled egg substitute – this delicious dish for just 560 calories.

Serving the community is important to Stavropoulos. The East Cobb IHOP offers use of a private area for meetings during the week (except Thursdays.) Just call ahead and reserve the space.

For seniors 65 and older, IHOP awards senior discounts on Monday and Tuesday nights, and all kids 12 and under eat free after 4:00 p.m. every day. Also, coming up on February 28, IHOP is hosting its 7th annual National Pancake Day. New Eateries Open in East Cobb This month, Pope grad, Chas D’Huyvetter, will open a new restaurant, Moxie Burger, in the Paper Mill Village shopping center. Chas is passionate about creating a true “neighborhood gathering place” for East Cobb, where families and friends of all ages can eat, drink, play, and relax together. The idea is to offer a place for East Cobbers to go and have a great meal without breaking the bank in a fun, warm atmosphere.

The outdoor deck even has corn hole for the kids to play. Moxie Burger offers burgers in the $5-$9 range. Also on the menu will be hot dogs, salads and a variety of fries--potato, sweet potato and zucchini.

Cheeky Mexican Taqueria opened its third location at The Avenue East Cobb. The restaurant offers more than 30 original dishes and 9 homemade salsas and is the only restaurant in Marietta offering a “pour your own beer” draft system, through which customers at select tables can serve their own drinks using touch screen technology. Cheeky’s is owned by Tappan Street Restaurant Group which also owns the Taco Mac restaurant chain.

Kani House opened in the former Sapporo location at 910 Marietta Hwy. in the Coleman Village Shopping Center in late January. Kani House, an authentic Japanese restaurant, offers more than 70 different sushi rolls, quality beef, homemade sauces, and special fried rice. Kani House’s menu ranges from entrees of chicken, steak, and shrimp to several signature dishes with meal prices around $15 per person. The Teppanyaki tables seat 8 with a total seating capacity of 110. Try the Kani Margarita made with Cuervo Gold Tequila, Cointreau and Grand Marnier.

Aldo Ramirez, whose popular Crazy Cuban sandwich shop near Georgia Tech opened two years ago, has opened a new location at 2000 Powers Ferry Road in Marietta.

The restaurants serve authentic Cuban food. Come on down to The Crazy Cuban for a grilled sandwich experience like no other.

Keegan’s Irish Pub will be opening in mid-March in the former O’Shaughnessy’s Restaurant & Bar in the Shallowford Corners Shopping Center. Owner Mike Ford and partners gutted the old space from the air ducts down to the flooring. The remodeled space and new menu bring a touch of Irish to East Cobb with a family friendly pub-like atmosphere. “Keegan’s will become the ‘new watering hole’ of East Cobb with our daily food and drink specials, live music on the weekend and trivia night,” says Ford. In addition to the traditional Irish fare of Fish & Chips, Bangers and Mash and Shepherd’s Pie, the menu will also include many sandwiches—Reuben, burgers, veggie and fish as well as main entrees of New York Strip, Pot Roast and Keegan’s own award-winning meatloaf. Prices range from $6.95 to $13.95.

Recipe of the Month: Corned Beef & Cabbage

Have a St. Paddy’s Day celebration with this traditional combo from fellow East Cobber, Jean HarnDailey. Jean is the mother of Olivia Faith Harn, age 14, and Darwin Harn-Dailey, age 5. She and her husband, Randall Dailey, are both Scottish/ Irish.

INGREDIENTS > 3 pounds corned beef brisket with spice packet > 10 small red potatoes > 5 carrots, peeled and cut into 3-inch pieces > 1 large head cabbage, cut into small wedges DIRECTIONS > Place corned beef in large pot or Dutch oven and cover with water. Add the spice packet that came with the corned beef. Cover pot and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer approximately 50 minutes per pound or until tender. > Add whole potatoes and carrots, and cook until the vegetables are almost tender. Add cabbage and cook for 15 more minutes. Remove meat and let rest 15 minutes. > Place vegetables in a bowl and cover. Add as much broth (cooking liquid reserved in the Dutch oven or large pot) as you want. Slice meat across the grain.

Serve with mustard or horseradish if desired.

The Joys of Volunteering at Your School

By Barbara Cheng Shifts are easy, usually only twice a month from two to four hours, so I still get the laundry done and plenty of time to walk the dog. With three different schools, my hours average about 17 hours a month – two 4 hour shifts at the high school, two 2 ½ hour shifts at the middle school, and about four hours at our elementary school where I fill in shifts.

If schedules permit, working parents can volunteer too.

Your shifts are the same each month and you can usually calendar them at the beginning of the year. Plus, coordinators send out monthly schedules.

As a stay-at-home mom with three children, and who also held a job for many years, sometimes it’s nice to change out of sweats and go into “the office.” And here in East Cobb, I can do that when I volunteer in my children’s schools’ front offices.

When we moved to East Cobb two and a half years ago from California, with no friends or family here, I needed to quickly meet other parents and to develop friendships.

Volunteering at the front desk or “Welcome Desk” was the perfect opportunity.

Since I usually work with another parent and school staff, we develop ongoing relationships compared to when you volunteer only a few times a year. In over two years, I’ve shared joys of children graduating and going to great universities, sorrows like the death of a parent, recipes such as Terri’s marinade, and even cross country driving tips with other Californians living here.

Responsibilities vary between schools, but for the most part it’s easy and someone trains you. Plus staff is happy to answer questions. We do everything from welcome school visitors, check in and out students, answer phones, file parent notes, help teachers and staff with projects, sort mail, and just try to make our school a warm and welcoming place for all involved.

It’s nice for your student to see you at school too. Believe me, once you’ve worked in the high school attendance office, your student is rarely late and neither are his or her friends. As a parent, it makes life a lot easier understanding school rules and routines too.

So if your schedule permits, this is time well spent. Even in the middle of the year, often there are shifts open. If shifts are full, subs are welcome and it’s a good way to get a taste if you’re not sure. If your school doesn’t have a “Welcome Desk”, talk to staff and consider starting one. Sometimes parents just aren’t aware how easy and fun this is.

We moved to East Cobb because of great schools. Yet, great schools require an active engaged parent community, so I’m happy to do my part. Yes, I’m selfish. Sometimes it’s just really nice to have a break from the house and the dog doesn’t mind either.

East Cobb Quilters Connect and Create

The East Cobb Quilters Guild (ECQG) roots are in East Cobb County, but members from beginners to advanced come from all around the Atlanta metro area and beyond to pursue the art and craft of quilting. The ECQG is a nonprofit group formed in 1982 by a group of thirty quilters.

Since that time, membership has grown to 250, and they produce Georgia’s largest biennial judged and juried quilt show, Georgia Celebrates Quilts.

The ECQG has a long history of community service, with members giving freely of their time and energy to brighten the day of someone in need through their donations of beautifully quilted items. In 2011 the following charities benefited from these generous donations:

• Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) Foster Care Program - 162 quilts and 1 afghan

• Meals on Wheels Programs - 323 placemats

• Marietta Senior Center in Cobb County - 172 placemats

• Canton Senior Center in Cherokee County - 151 placemats

• ConKerrCancer - 129 pillowcases

This year the guild is donating a queen-size quilt to Cobb County Center for Children and Young Adults for use in their spring silent auction fund raiser. It was produced by dozens of members working together to give a gift of love to the community.

“The East Cobb Quilters Club makes it fun to share the creative experience of quilting with friends. ECQG helps make this happen!” says ECQG President, Carolyn Powers.

The ECQG members share their love of quilts – traditional and contemporary, pieced and appliqué, large and small.

Members have opportunities to enhance their own quilting skills through lectures, workshops and exhibits offered throughout the year. The The East Cobb Quilters Guild has enriched the lives of thousands of quilters who have enjoyed the inspiration, knowledge and friendship that membership provides.

New members may join at any time during the year.

Annual dues are $30 per year. Members meet monthly, (except November) on the last Friday of the month from 9:15 am to 12 pm at the Parish Center of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 4905 Roswell Road NE, in Marietta/East Cobb.

The Evening Guild meets at 7 pm on the Thursday prior to the regular Friday guild meeting at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, Room F001, 4385 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta/East Cobb.

American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Georgia’s 2012 Legislative Priorities Long-term care, health insurance and a possible fight to preserve the state sales tax exemption on groceries are top priorities for AARP Georgia during the annual legislative session of the Georgia Assembly began January 9, and AARP Georgia has been pursuing a four-point plan: 1- Protect funding for long-term care programs, especially

those that help seniors remain in their homes and

communities as they age.

2- Support efforts to reduce the number of uninsured and

underinsured in Georgia.

3- Oppose efforts to put the state sales tax back on

groceries.

4- Fight for the right for seniors, their doctors and their

families to have clear, binding instructions that tell all

medical professionals exactly what kind of care to

administer - or not administer - in cases when patients

are unable to make decisions for themselves.

This documentary traces the first voyages of Joseph Banks who, as a young botanist, accompanied Captain James Cook on his first journey of circumnavigation. Meals On Wheels Needs Volunteers Cobb County is fortunate to have Meals On Wheels (MOW), a unique program that brings homebound, frail seniors a hot meal on a daily basis. Each day, Cobb Senior Services prepares over 180 meals, more than 45,000 a year, to be delivered to seniors in need.

Many of these seniors have no support system, no way to get to the store, or are unable to cook for themselves due to physical limitations. Our volunteers make sure that not only is a hot, nutritious meal served, but also that each client is made to feel special with personal visits. Often, the volunteer is the only outside contact these seniors have and the delivered meal is their only meal for the day.

Currently, there is an urgent need for volunteer drivers.

There is a waiting list of seniors needing Meals On Wheels but there is shortage of volunteers, particularly in Marietta, Powder Springs, and Austell. Cobb Senior Services is

currently looking to churches, businesses, and civic organizations to “Adopt-A-Route.” Ideally, these groups will provide volunteers from among their membership and take ownership of a specific route.

If you have some time to volunteer as a MOW driver, or if you belong to an organization that would like to “Adopt-A-Route,” call Shelia Perkins, Volunteer Coordinator at 770-528-5381. We will provide all the training for this wonderful outreach to Cobb’s senior residents.

While there is a small cost for the meals, no client is ever turned down for MOW because he or she cannot afford the program.
