Brush! Brush! Most children will be able to brush their own teeth by age 6 or 7. Select a brush that has soft, rounded bristles and teach them to use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. They should brush for a minimum of two minutes twice a day.

Most children need to see the dentist twice a year. It is recommended that children start seeing the dentist by their first birthday. Our Pediatric Dentist specializes in making your child’s visits calm and comfortable.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
On the Cover
I was lucky to have one of my biggest role models living in the same house with me, my mother. As clichéd and corny as it may sound, its true. She was a working mom with five children striving to not only give us the material things: clothes, food, a safe place to live, private school. She also gave us enough love that each night when my brother and sisters and I went to bed, we were secure in the knowledge that we were loved. With my father’s support, she managed to finish her college degree (which had been interrupted by the birth of 5 children.) One of my earliest memories of my mother is attending her graduation seeing her dressed in the classic cap and gown holding the diploma. That mental snapshot is burned into my memory because it represents the values she stood for and instilled in me: the importance of education, independence, and determination. That’s why I am happy to sponsor the EAST COBBER Mother of the Year essay contest. By honoring a mother in our community, I hope to honor all of the millions and millions of mothers whose lives are compelling examples of unwavering, unyielding, uninterrupted commitment to their children and families. This year’s EAST COBBER Mother of the Year, Kathleen Leard is that example of a mother’s unwavering commitment to her family. With an autistic son, Kathleen not only advocates, but has also legislated for improved access to special therapies for autistic children. She worked with state legislators to pass Ava’s Law. In 2009, Ava’s Law established a committee to examine the autism insurance reform issue and develop ways the state legislature can stop discrimination by insurance companies of Georgia’s children with autism.
Featured on our cover this month is Kathleen Leard, this year’s EAST COBBER Mother of the Year with her three children: Davis, age 10; “Charlie,” age 6; and, Molly, 15 months old. “I am flattered and honored that my husband, Christian, nominated me,” says Kathleen. “Juggling the busy schedules of three children—one with autism, “definitely makes for a different lifestyle,” shares Kathleen. The Leard Family lives in the NorthHampton subdivision.

This issue spotlights another May tradition: M om & M e 2 0 11 graduation. EAST COBBER features the STAR students (page 8), scholarship winners (page 10) and lists the local high school graduations (page 16.) By publishing stories about these annual rituals and celebrations, I hope they inspire you to share in the joy of these proud accomplishments and appreciate the good in our community. Like Mother’s Day, the EAST COBBER publishes stories every month as a way to publicly express a love and reverence for the people contributing to the quality of life in East Cobb. By spotlighting the people, places and events that are unique and special to East Cobb I hope this good news brightens your day and affirms the precious profoundness in our everyday East Cobb lives. Happy Mother’s Day!
Married in 1997, she and her husband grew up in East Cobb, in fact, they are both Pope High School grads. Kathleen loves “the sense of community in East Cobb… and all the activities available for kids and families” in East Cobb. With an autistic son, she has worked with state legislators to establish a committee to examine the autism insurance reform issue. Kathleen Leard: East Cobber Mother of the Year 2012 Here is the winning essay written by Christian Leard, nominating his wife, Kathleen Leard:
ss Christian Leard standing with his wife, Kathleen (sitting), and their son, Davis, 10; daughters, “Charlie,”6, and Molly, 1.
The “mom” I would like to nominate for this year’s East Cobber Mother of the Year is my wife, Kathleen Leard. Kathleen is the mother to our three extraordinary children: Davis (10), “Charlie” (6) and Molly (1). Our parenting lives changed forever when Davis was diagnosed with autism at 2. From that day, Kathleen embarked on a journey to find answers, support, therapies, treatments, and hopefully a way to recover our beautiful baby boy from autism. I am luckier than most husbands on many fronts, but the one most dear to me is my wife’s unyielding and unrelenting quest to help Davis. I cannot begin to tell you the number of hours in the week that Kathleen dedicated and continues to dedicate to fighting for our son. She has fought for not only Davis, but also all children affected by autism by drafting legislation and lobbying the state of Georgia for insurance reform to more broadly support therapies to support children with autism. All this while raising our two beautiful daughters, being room mom for both Davis and Charlie since they were in school at Mountain View, and being the best wife as well as best mom in East Cobb!

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation was selected in 1994 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to coordinate the State STAR Program in association with the Chamber and the Georgia Department of Education. East Cobb County Council of PTAs Celebrates Student Success By Irene Barton, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs
ss Pictured above are the Margie Hatfield Scholarship recipients for 2011-12 (left to right:) Claudia Cheung, Pope High School; Sarah Meyer, Lassiter High School; Brandon Sheu, Wheeler High School; Mrs. Margie Hatfield; Kylar Ferguson, Sprayberry High School; Abbey O’Brown, Kell High School; and Ryan Humble, Walton High School, at the East Cobb County Council of PTA’s (ECCC PTA) general membership meeting held on April 12.
The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a national organization that strives to unite parents and teachers in working towards better schools and education. The PTA’s volunteer network includes over 5 million individuals and 25,000 local branches. The members of the PTA have diverse duties, including fund raising, political activism, community outreach and problem solving. Like our PTA peers across the country, another important function for the ECCC Council of PTAs is to encourage and recognize students’ successes. The Margie Hatfield scholarship and the National PTA Reflections program are two ways we spotlight our exceptional East Cobb students. Funded by the 35 local units of East Cobb County Council of PTAs and donations from community members, the Margie Hatfield Scholarship awards are based on an applicant’s academic achievement, citizenship, leadership, extracurricular activities and service to the community. Former ECCC PTA President Margie Hatfield, for whom the scholarship fund is named, was on hand for the presentations held at Walton High School. All of the winners have GPAs of over 4.0 and participate in a variety of school and community activities. Congratulations to these outstanding seniors!
art for fun and recognition. K-12 students are encouraged to create and submit works of art in one or more of six areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film/video production. In its more than 30-year history, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation to create works of art. Fortyfive participants from East Cobb were named winners at the state level and were honored on March 25 at a reception held at the Woodruff Arts Center. Two of our first place winners were selected to move on to the National PTA level. They are Cullen Hunt from Tritt Elementary and Ali KilkennySmith, representing Lassiter High School. Both are competing in the film production category. For a complete list of winners from ECCC PTA schools, please go to http://ecccpta. org/committee-news-info/reflections. The Board of Directors of ECCC PTA is proud to continue our rich tradition of supporting and celebrating student success. We wish all of our members a relaxing and safe summer holiday and we look forward to collaborating with you again in support of our children.
Hundreds of students from our schools also participated in the National PTA Reflections Program this school year. This program offers students the opportunity to create works of 10 May 2012

Dickerson Middle School Odyssey of the Mind Team Travels to World Finals

A group of very brilliant and creative eigthh graders from Dickerson Middle School have been on an incredible odyssey this year. This team of seven students got together to participate in Odyssey of the Mind. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
Genuine Leadership. Genuine Caring. Genuinely Effective. 770-956-8357 twitter.com/repsharoncooper facebook.com/cooperforhouse
The Dickerson team competed in Division II of the Classics problem, “To Be Or Not To Be.” This problem involved putting a musical theatre spin on one of William Shakespeare’s most famous lines, “To Be Or Not To Be.” Hamlet, the title character, ponders this question and realizes that the easy way out is not always the correct choice. The team was required to create an original play in which the ‘Hamlet’ character faces a team-created dilemma portraying the easy and not so easy choice which the character faces. On top of creating a completely original script, the team had to incorporate several required elements, namely, the Hamlet character’s conscience, a creative scene and costume change, the use of a trap door and performing the play in 8 minutes or less. All of the sets, costumes and script had to be entirely created by the team with no assistance from adults. Parents Rebecca Ensley and Tom Kerber guided the students’ efforts, but the work and creativity was all from the Dickerson team members. This is the first time this team has competed together. They placed first at the regional competition in March and won first place in the state competition on April 14. They will participate in the world finals in Ames, Iowa, on May 23 through May 26. Congrats, Dickerson Team!!

Fundraiser to Benefit East Cobb Resident with Cancer By Alex Ewalt On May 17, Dave and Buster’s at 2215 D&B Drive in Marietta will offer a 20 percent off discount on food, nonalcoholic drinks and D&B Power Cards all day, with 10 percent of the proceeds of purchases going to the Patti Lyons Foundation. For Power Cards that are purchased on a day other than the fundraiser, 50 percent will go to the foundation when Patti’s cause is mentioned. Visit the Patti Lyons Foundation page on Facebook for more information. Those interested in contributing can also make a cash donation through Wells Fargo Bank using Attn: Patti Lyons Foundation, 1313 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, GA 30068. Patti’s parents both had melanoma on their skin, but it was successfully removed in both cases. Though Patti’s melanoma appeared in the form of a tumor, she notes that genetics contribute to cancer risk and that if your family has a history of the disease, you should start getting checked earlier in life. ss Patti Lyons
Life changed dramatically last October for Patti Lyons, an East Cobb single mother of two, when she was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma. Just weeks after the diagnosis, she underwent major surgery to remove a tumor and a significant portion of her digestive system. After learning that the cancer had spread to her liver and her lungs, she began an aggressive treatment program, requiring extended hospital stays. Patti, 43, is a psychotherapist but has been unable to work since the diagnosis last year. To complicate matters, her employer does not offer health insurance. To assist her in covering rising medical bills, a group of Patti’s close friends have organized a fundraiser through the newly established Patti Lyons Foundation.
Academic Enrichment Pre-K — 12th Grade 877.586.6671 | www.kumon.com
“Be proactive and get your skin checked regularly, get a colonoscopy even if you don’t want to,” she said. “Melanoma is a very aggressive form of cancer.” In addition to setting up the fundraiser with Dave & Buster’s and helping to start her foundation, Patti’s close friends — including Lynette Jurgens, Kelly Forlini, Rebecca Osborn, Christine Morris, Louise Wells and Paulette Farley, to name a few — have assisted with day-to-day responsibilities and in caring for her two sons: 16-year-old Royland, a sophomore at Walton, and 13-year-old Thomas, a 7th-grader at Dickerson. “I get through it with the support of my friends,” Patti said. “I keep them informed. If I’m tired, or I don’t feel good, or I’m feeling sorry for myself, my friends are always around.” For more information on the Patti Lyons Foundation, visit www.carepages.com/carepages/PattisPages or email pattilyonsfoundation@gmail.com.

Sprayberry Sponsors Fundraiser for its Echo Foundation by Laila Akar and Julia Aman
Fine Arts Building Allen Marc Middlebrooks and Luke
Theatre
Orchestra Room
Sprayberry High School’s Spotlight Cabaret will be the first fundraiser for the Echo Foundation. Audience members will enjoy a delicious dessert while watching students perform classic songs from musicals. Spotlight Cabaret is scheduled for May 11 and 12 in Sprayberry’s Theatre, 2525 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta/East Cobb. Performances start at 7pm and tickets are $10. To make reservations, call 770-578-3200.
Marc Middlebrooks also directs the school’s annual Echo Pageant, a program that epitomizes Sprayberry’s greatest ideals and principles: academics, athletics and fine arts. “Echo Pageant is not just a beauty pageant. Echo Pageant serves as a valuable program for students to be leaders in the school and community. It brings together students from all the different departments of the school and awards them for their achievements,” shares Middlebrooks. Realizing how important the Echo Pageant could be, he launched one of his boldest initiatives yet: The Echo Foundation. The Echo Foundation was created to recognize students for their school involvement and community service, and reward them with college scholarships. Middlebrooks felt that the school had strong academics, it had athletics, it had a brand new face, but it was missing pieces and he hopes that this will be the first step to creating a more unified student body. www.eastcobber.com
2012 Dates:
Marc Middlebrooks, Sprayberry’s Drama Director, was first inspired to improve the quality of the productions when the fine arts wing was created. This wing itself is filled with state of the art equipment that changed the entire attitude of the fine arts department. But the vision of renovation has not been limited to just fine arts. Under his direction improvements have also been seen at multiple school pep rallies, powder puff football and many others. He has worked to honor traditions, but strives to create new ones.
Apr 6 - May 4 - Jun 1 - JuL 6 - Aug 3 - Sept 7 - Oct 5
Sprayberry High School has recently renovated its entire fine arts department with the construction of a new building dedicated to the drama, band, orchestra and chorus programs. Thanks to $26 milion of SPLOST dollars, the new 34,000+ square foot building has equipped the 700 students involved in the fine arts department with the resources needed to reach the height of their potential. Each program has been given a designated room in the building designed to maximize the quality of the students’ performances.

The Importance of Tire Maintenance When we get into our vehicles to drive someplace, it is seldom that we give much thought to the tires unless, of course, there is a problem with at least one of them. And to make matters worse, it seems to happen when we are running late or we have to get to an important destination. Some problems are unavoidable, but often we can reduce these stressful times by having the tires properly inspected on a regular basis. This starts with making sure that they are inflated to the proper level as designated by the car manufacturer. This information can often be obtained on the driver side door panel or in the owner’s manual. Avoid setting level based on the information found on the side wall of the tire. This level may be too high and can cause ride and performance issues. In addition, having the tires rotated and balanced on a regular basis is important when it comes to tire care. Every other oil change is a good rule of thumb, assuming an oil change is being done approximately every 3,000 miles. During this service, at SELLAR’S GOODYEAR, the tire technician will inspect the tires for tread depth, possible road hazard issues and visually inspect the suspension for unusual alignment wear patterns. We will then advise you on these concerns and offer you solutions and suggestions to meet your needs.

When it comes to purchasing tires, this too can be intimidating. With so many choices it can sometimes be difficult to know what the best fitment is for your particular vehicle and your personal requirements. The size of the tire, the performance rating (a.k.a speed rating), tread pattern, etc., are all important components to make sure that the right tire is put onto your vehicle. At SELLAR’S we are your tire professionals. Stop in any time for a 5 minute or less air pressure check and tire inspection, FREE OF CHARGE.

Owners Apostolos Kokosis (who goes by “Louie”) and his wife Tess moved to East Cobb from the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx because they heard about the excellent schools in the area. Their son, Alex, attends the special needs program at Pope High School and is a common visitor to the restaurant. In fact, a Panini is named after him. The couple moved to East Cobb five years ago, and opened their first diner in Midtown. After a few years serving patrons near the Fox Theatre, they sold the restaurant and opened one closer to home in East Cobb.

They renovated a former Mrs. Winner’s location to reflect a combination of Broadway themes, with autographed posters of musicals and vintage photos of 50s and 60s actors. The restaurant’s casual atmosphere can fit up to 75, and the outside patio is a nice retreat on sunny days. “We wanted to create a place where people can meet, eat and relax and enjoy homemade cooking at reasonable prices,” says Louie. “Everyone is welcome here.”

FAMILY FRIDAYS!
Originally from the Greek island of Kefalonia, Chef Louie loves to brag about his Greek traditional dishes from Pastichio, Spanakopita and Moussaka to Gyro and Souvlaki sandwiches served on a pita. Greek lemon soup (Avgolemono) and the Greekstyle oven baked potatoes have become local favorites.
**Cannot be combined with any other offer** ***Offer valid only on Fridays***
Louie and Tess have been in the food industry for more than 30 years, and they are excited to finally be able to serve customers in East Cobb. “We have merged the flavors of New York with the flair of Southern cooking to create a unique combination of dishes,” says Tess. The “Wicked Delights” section of the menu highlights the mile-high cakes, pies and pastries that diners are famous for. Save room for dessert because you’ll have to sample the Tiramisu cake, Red Velvet or the New York Blackout chocolate cake. You’ll be glad you did.

The Greek Orthodox Community Invites You to the 22nd Annual Marietta Greek Festival
The Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church presents the 22nd Annual Marietta Greek Festival May 18-20. The Marietta Greek Festival will be held on the beautiful church grounds at 3431 Trickum Road in East Cobb. Many people in the East Cobb Community have watched the Marietta Greek Festival grow from humble beginnings in 1990 at the Cobb County Civic Center to Cobb County’s largest ethnic event. 2012 marks the 22nd anniversary of this beloved Marietta tradition and all are invited to come celebrate and enjoy the Greek culture. Enjoy homemade Greek food and pastries, live Greek music, authentic Greek dancing, exotic shopping and much more. There is something for every member of the family. Festival guests will enjoy traditional ethnic specialties such as Chicken Oreganato, Pastitsio, Dolmades and the great Gyro sandwich. Exquisite Greek pastries, breads, cheese and spinach pies and honey puffs are highlights you won’t want to miss. On the lighter side, Niko’s Taverna serves a delicious variety of Greek hors d’oeuvres along with imported beer and wines. The South’s only authentic Greek amphitheater is the venue for continuous live music, dance performances and world-class hospitality. Guided tours of the beautiful Byzantine sanctuary and chapel are offered throughout the weekend. Guests will be in awe of the rich color, distinctive iconography and ancient beauty of the interior of a Greek Orthodox Church.
The art and design of the edifice not only create a distinctive atmosphere for worship, but also reflect and embody the fundamental beliefs of Orthodoxy. Come and learn about the Orthodox Faith which has not changed since the time of the Apostles. Over a dozen authentic vendors set up their shops inside the Festival’s Agora (Marketplace). Come by to see items created in the Greek tradition such as fine imported Greek jewelry, handmade linens, hip scarves, delicious Greek pastries, Greek cookbooks and travel books, decorative art pieces, hand done oil paintings, beautiful Mediterranean candle holders, glass blown items and wood crafted items from the Holy Land--just to name a few! You will find an endless assortment of items that reflect the Hellenic Culture and its cherished traditions. Come to the Marietta Greek Festival and be Greek for a day! This East Cobb tradition opens Friday, May 18th, at 3 p.m. with FREE admission for all until 6 p.m. The fun continues on Saturday, May 19th, 10 a.m. - 11p.m. and concludes Sunday, May 20th, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Admission is just $3 (kids 12 and under are FREE). Although thousands attend, free parking and shuttles make it a stress-free and convenient visit. The Marietta Greek Festival is held at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 3431 Trickum Road, Marietta 30066. Log onto www.mariettagreekfestival.org for more festival information. Physician, Treat Thyself?
Red Cross Calls for Blood Donors Blood is needed for transfusions in emergency and trauma situations. From the emergency room to the operating room to post op, hospitals use blood every single day. Patients with broken bones, injured in car accidents, even cancer patients are in need of blood transfusions. The American Red Cross says that’s why it’s so important to give blood. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors. Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors with type O (positive and negative), B negative and A negative blood should consider an automated red cell donation, a process in which only red cells are donated. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.givelife. org. Or you can get a chance to save a life by going to any one of these blood drives being held around the East Cobb area during the month of May: > May 7, 2 – 7pm Nicholson Elementary School 1599 Shallowford Road, Marietta 30066 > May 8, 8am – 1pm The Epstein School 335 Colewood Way, Atlanta 30328 > May 9, 1 – 6pm High Meadows Elementary 1055 Willeo Road, Roswell 30075 > May 10, 2 – 7pm Johnson Ferry Baptist Church 955 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta 30068 > May 13, 8am – 1pm First Presbyterian Church 189 Church Street NE, Marietta 30060 > May 21, 2 – 7pm East Cobb United Methodist Church 2325 Roswell Road NE, Marietta 30062 > May 25, 10am – 3pm WellStar Administration Building 805 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta 30060 > May 29, 2 – 7pm Bruster’s Famous Ice Cream 3735 Trickum Road, Marietta 30066 > May 31, 2 – 7pm Home Depot Store 4101 Roswell Road, Marietta 30062
I tell myself, if only I had more time, more sleep, more energy, a little chocolate to get that extra boost, just one Hershey kiss … then, I could exercise. I get home from work and rather than go on the bicycle, I remind myself about the antioxidants in red wine. Ah yes, just a small glass and I will be ready to tackle the world of cellulite reduction. “Isn’t relaxation an essential part of a healthy lifestyle?” my subconscious asks meekly.
ss Dr. Alison Barrack
I go into work the next morning after my obligatory cup of “joe” and feel on top of the world. Sitting across from my new patient, I ask the question, “What is your goal for your health care?” The response more or less goes something like this, “I just spent 45 minutes telling you everything I have wrong with me: • My knees hurt when I walk. • My elbow hurts when I play tennis. • I can’t sleep. • Fix me.” I take a deep breath, look at my patient and say, “Okay, fill in the blank to the following statement: If I could (blank), life would be better. I would feel better.” One gentleman answered, “I want to care about a healthier life.” He no longer had the drive to develop health care goals, much less obtain them. The gentleman was pleasant, had a good job, a family, but he had tried and failed so many times at exercise and diet that he was physically and emotionally wiped out. I really needed time to think about how to motivate this patient to feel motivation. If there is no feeling of motivation, then go through the motions and create it. • Try small steps with big rewards. • The energy it takes to beat yourself up over the piece of cake you just ate does not burn calories. • Make a check mark on a calendar for every good choice made and give bonuses for tough choices (passing up a favorite dessert). • Develop a personal reward system that does not include unhealthy consequences. • At the end of the month, add up those checks and give yourself a reward. • Rewards can be simple: one hour of guilt-free reading or a long bubble bath. Doctors can give injections, medications, and diet plans, but motivation is often the best prescription. Dr. Barrack specializes in the non surgical treatment of musculoskeletal disorders of the spine, muscles, and joints. She has practiced in the Marietta area since 1994 and recently opened her practice, Barrack Spine and Joint Medicine, in East Cobb. Dr. Barrack’s office is located at 1230 Johnson Ferry Place in Marietta/East Cobb. She can be reached at 678- 738-7601. P A I D A D V E R T I S E M E N T

East Cobb Senior Center Activities Scheduled for May All Cobb residents age 55+ are invited to participate in activities at various senior centers throughout Cobb. The following is a listing of activities scheduled at the East Cobb Senior Center located at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta 30066. Call the East Cobb Senior Center at 770-509-4900 for reservations and/or more details. Blood Pressure Screening Tuesday, May 1 Thursday, May 3 Tuesday, May 15 10am – 12pm The History Corner: Cotton Kings Wednesday, May 9 10 – 11:30am Free. Registration required. In the years following the Civil War, as the South wearily rebuilt, a new generation of wealthy landowners began to emerge. These were the Cotton Kings, and their lavish mansions rival the finest antebellum plantation homes. We will journey via film first to the 30-room Swan House in Atlanta, then onto Bishop’s Palace and Moody Mansion in Galveston. These magnificent estates range in architecture design from Palladian style to French Renaissance and Romanesque to Moorish and Tudor. Join us for an armchair tour of some of “American’s Castles”.

East Cobb New Horizons Band Attracts Senior Adults In addition to the East Cobb New Horizons concert band, an active affiliate group known as the Memory Lane Jazz Ensemble performs for dances and concerts to the delight of many. This ensemble offers a unique mixture of great big band classics as well as more modern jazz and rock tunes. Mr. Carl Merwin directs the jazz ensemble. The band’s website www.ecnhb.com shows a complete schedule of upcoming events, lists the members, the band’s repertoire and also has a sign-up area for “Friends of the Band” to receive emails about upcoming concerts.
In Marietta each week, a group of musicians comes together to rehearse for two and a half hours. They rehearse in order to entertain various senior adult and church groups in the greater Cobb and Cherokee County areas. If anyone sees this band in concert, one thing is apparent : they are all senior adults. The East Cobb New Horizons Band offers adults age 50 or older, with musical instrument experience, the opportunity to join an actively performing concert band. Mr. George Broom directs the band. It began in 2005 with some 18 people and has grown to a dynamic group now featuring some 70 musicians. The band is a member of the New Horizons International Music Association. This international association currently has 170 member groups throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and Ireland. It all started in 1991, when the first New Horizons Band was founded by Roy Ernst in Rochester, N.Y. Today, Ernst’s idea of involving seniors in music has grown to an international organization — the New Horizons International Music Association, which, now boasts almost 200 bands, orchestras, choruses and other ensembles worldwide.
The band rehearses weekly on Mondays at 11am in Marietta at The Warehouse of the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta. The Warehouse is located at 68 North Marietta Parkway in Marietta. Director Broom invites interested folks to feel free to come and sit in on rehearsals and give it a try for a month. Any guest will see that the band members work hard, produce great music and, in the process, have a lot of fun! Director Broom says that a lot of people say, “But I have not played my instrument for several years!” He wants anyone who is interested to know that many of the members have been in the same situation, putting an instrument aside in some cases for decades. Although the band does require musical experience, when first starting back, everyone in the band understands the challenge of rebuilding physical stamina and technique. Publicity chairman, Frank McLeod, says that he was one of those who had not played in a long time in an organized band. Someone saw publicity about the East Cobb New Horizons Band and emailed it to McLeod. As a result, he joined in late 2010 and encourages anyone who has musical experience to consider this great experience. He says, “It is personally rewarding and fun to make music for people and see their faces light up as the music touches them deeply and, in a lot of cases, brings back fond memories.” The band members create great friendships and, together, experience the sheer fun of making music and giving to the community.

Let’s make it a grand entrance. At WellStar, we know a little something about welcoming little ones. More than a little, in fact – our doctors, nurses, midwives and other care specialists deliver more than 10,000 babies every year. The family-centered care provided by our outstanding maternity services teams includes spacious labor/delivery/recovery suites and “couplet care,” which keeps mom and baby together for bonding. And if your new arrival comes early or needs extra attention, WellStar’s two neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are specially equipped with the latest technology to provide the care babies need to grow healthy and strong. Once you’re home, you can count on the WellStar Pediatric Network to connect you with doctors and services close to home to see you through the baby years all the way through the teen ones.
