PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us…” - Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Wars in distant lands that never seem to end. Home foreclosures and an unemployment rate that doesn’t seem to improve. Social injustices and terror threaten people. Sometimes it can be enough to make you wonder if what you do means anything at all or doubt if you will ever overcome the huge challenges that the world creates. It can seem very overwhelming and sometimes people consider giving up. Some even do. So to help you continue on, even stay positive about the future, this issue of the EAST COBBER focuses on all the good going on in our community despite the gloomy realities. The special events listed in the Community Calendar on page 24 and the Support Groups listed on page 64 represent those East Cobbers who come together to raise funds for their causes as well as reach out to help those in need. It is the very presence of a challenge that keeps many East Cobbers going. Consider the staff at the Center For Family Resources (CFR) who are sponsoring a food drive that will provide Thanksgiving food baskets to those in need. CFR’s efforts remind us that there are those worse off than us and inspires us to give food and hope to those deep in despair. It is these people and groups the EAST COBBER will always spotlight: those who continue to contribute to our quality of life -- like front cover person, Irene Barton, PTA president of the East Cobb County Council of PTAs, as well as the Wheeler, Kell and Walton high school students who push themselves to learn more and do more in academics (see pages 8 and 37). Knowing that these good works go on despite so much bad that is reported on, makes it, to me, the best of times.

In honor of our Pet Guide we had Irene Barton, president of the East Cobb County Council (ECCC) of PTAs, photographed with her family pet, Harper—a rescue dog. Irene Barton leads 35 PTA presidents find ways to improve the academic lives of East Cobb children. As Irene explains, “I, as well as my executive board--‘my great team’-provide training and make ourselves available to answer questions for the PTA presidents …the ultimate goal is for each PTA to encourage and engage parents to get involved in their school.” Irene also juggles a part-time position as an office manager, is legislative chair for Dickerson Middle School and East Side Elementary School, teaching Sunday School at St. Ann’s Catholic

Thanksgiving is a day for appreciating our own good fortune and sharing it with others. So, thanks to all of you readers, who are the heart and soul of this publication, the reason for this magazine’s existence. I have so much to be thankful for, and I don’t mean to trivialize those personal treasures of family and friends and liberty and democracy. But the relationship between EAST COBBER and you is one that forms the basis of all that I think about when I am creating each issue. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our many advertisers who choose to promote their businesses by placing ads in the EAST COBBER. Without their commitment there would be no publication. And thanks to our 400 community-minded merchants who act as drop-off points for EAST COBBER. I Appreciate You All!

East Cobb Teachers of the Year Honored at Chamber’s Give Our Schools A Hand Ceremony The Teacher of the Year program is designed to spotlight those dedicated to educating and changing the lives of our young people. Each year, one talented and special person is selected to be a school’s Teacher of the Year. From that group of Cobb County teachers, Coy Dunn, Kennesaw Mountain High School’s Teacher of the Year, was named as Cobb County’s Teacher of the Year. Joanne Cox, Sawyer Road Elementary School, was also named as Marietta City School’s Teacher of the Year. Both Dunn and Cox are arts educators. A pep rally honoring all Cobb and Marietta City Teachers of the Year was held at the Roswell Street Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 5. On October 25, another pep rally kicked off the annual Give Our Schools a Hand week. This is the 23rd year that the Cobb Chamber of Commerce has sponsored Give Our Schools a Hand (GOSH) special event. A salute to education in Cobb County, GOSH week brought educators, students, parents, businesses and the community together to honor education. East Cobb Girls Represent U.S. in Malaysia for Engineering World Championship By Molly Henson The Hawks designed and manufactured a miniature “car” out of balsa wood. The team presented their work to a judging panel with a verbal and written presentation supporting their model car. The cars are timed from the moment they are launched to when they pass the finish line by a computer. The track is especially designed for this prestigious event. It is 20 meters (65.6 feet) in length and the average car covers this distance in just over 1 second, traveling over 60kmp (37.28 mph). Led by Liz Fitzgerald, team advisor, and Fred Stillwell, former ECMS STEM teacher and F1 coordinator, the team was proud to place 18th in the World! The girls were able to attend the competition by raising over $18,000 through sponsorships from Porsche Cars North America, the Women in Technology Foundation, and other private businesses and foundations. ss Anna Awald, Claire McCoy, Kelly Fitzgerald and Sabine Saldanha Cobb County’s Team Raptor took the trip of a lifetime when they traveled to Kuala Lumpur to compete in the Formula 1 (F1) in Schools World Championship in September. The all-girl team, Team Raptor, consisting of Anna Awald, Kelly Fitzgerald, Claire McCoy and Sabine Saldanha, took second place at the National Formula 1 in Schools Engineering event in Michigan this past May. This catapulted them to the World Championship where they partnered with the second place team from Hamburg, Germany. The new collaboration was renamed the HAWKS. “It was not easy because the collaboration was difficult but worth it in the end.” Kelly Fitzgerald refers to the language barrier and not meeting her team’s German counterpart until arriving in Kuala Lumpur.

8 November 2011

F1 in School’s aim is to introduce younger people (ages 9-19) to engineering in a more fun environment through the model of Formula 1 racing. Currently in 34 countries with over 12 million students involved, F1 in Schools is quickly realizing their global potential of reaching students who are interested in science and engineering and further developing that passion. The students were able to enjoy some sight-seeing while there as well. “Going to an authentic market in downtown Kuala Lumpur and seeing the Malaysian culture first-hand was an amazing experience,” Kelly Fitzgerald reminisces. They also visited the famous Petronas Towers which served as the backdrop to the competition. Anna, Kelly, and Claire now attend Wheeler High School’s Math and Science Magnet Program and Sabine attends Campbell High School’s International Baccalaureate program. With the new knowledge and experience they gained from the World Championship, they are looking forward to next year’s National Competition to win first place.

Kick Start to Better Health and Fitness

Training directly under the founder of the art, Marshall Pereira, better known to his students as Master P, is now bringing Choi Kwang Do to East Cobb. In fact, the founder, Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi, sent him to oversee the East Cobb location. Both children (classes for 4-11) and adults (classes for 12 and older) can benefit from this martial arts program that promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well being. Choi Kwang Do actually started right here in Georgia in 1987. A world–famous, successful Tae Kwon Do practitioner and trainer, Grandmaster Choi founded Choi Kwang Do to incorporate scientific principles of motion and natural bilateral movement, as well as breathing and stretching into traditional martial arts. Choi Kwang Do is not intended for competition. Master P, who holds an 8th degree Black Belt, has been involved in martial arts since 1975 and has been an instructor since 1982, exclusively teaching Choi Kwang Do since 1988. He has trained more than 30 Choi Kwang Do instructors who are now teaching throughout the world. Master P cites the benefits of Choi Kwang Do as strength, endurance, flexibility, stress relief, weight control, self defense, improved self-esteem, improved coordination and balance, and increased energy. He goes on to say that children with attention deficit disorders, learning disorders, hyperactivity, and simply shy personalities have all seen improvements in these areas in just a few lessons. Parents of some of his students tout better behavior and grades as a direct result of their children’s training. For adults, Choi Kwang Do instructors teach how to maintain flexibility, manage stress, and increase productivity.

Schools Put “Kindness” into Action By Irene Barton, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs You may have heard how prevalent bullying and peer pressure is in our schools today. It adds a whole level of issues that teachers, administrators, parents, guidance counselors, and others must address. School communities receive outstanding support in this area (and many others) from the Cobb County School District’s Prevention Intervention Center. This year, PTAs and PTSAs in the East Cobb County Council of PTAs are sponsoring programs and activities for their students that address the issues of tolerance, kindness and anti-bullying. PTA leaders heard a presentation about “No Place for Hate” last spring at a training for new officers. The No Place for Hate® initiative empowers the whole school community – teachers and students, administrators and parents – to tackle prejudice, bullying and intergroup conflict. A school commits to completing at least three school-wide anti-bullying or diversity education activities throughout the school year. Check out http://regions. adl.org/southeast/programs/no-place-for-hate.html for more information. Several of the PTAs from our 35 schools are sponsoring the NPFH program this year.

EAST COBBER 10 November 2011

Rachel’s Challenge is a nation-wide program founded in memory of Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America. Dickerson and HighTower Trail Middle Schools have implemented the program this year with student-targeted assemblies followed by community-wide presentations. Dickerson’s “Chain of Kindness” is on display at the school and is a tangible reminder to the students of Rachel’s hope that by doing one act of kindness “you may start a chain reaction.” Go to www.rachelschallenge.org for more information. These are just two programs that local PTAs, with the support of their administrators, have brought to our school communities this year to address the critical issues of bullying, intolerance, and conflict. They represent one more way that PTAs help to “make every child’s potential a reality.” We encourage all stakeholders to embrace these same values!

Gabriel Weinberg, a 1997 graduate of The Walker School, is the founder of a new search engine that rivals Google and has been named by Time Magazine’s Harry McCracken as one of the fifty best websites of 2011. It’s called Duck Duck Go and has distinguished itself as a search engine protecting ss Gabriel Weinberg your privacy. The site’s logo, a yellow-billed duck that might be the AFLAC duck’s “cousin”, is as reassuring as the site’s privacy policy, making it very appealing to librarians and students. Weinberg, no stranger to technology or entrepreneurship, was a self-starter from an early age. Gabriel grew up in East Cobb attending both Sope Creek Elementary and East Cobb Middle School before graduating from The Walker School. As early as sixth grade, he set his sights on M.I.T. where he graduated with a B.S. in physics and an M.S. in M.I.T’s technology and policy program. His first computer came to him as a Bar Mitzvah gift; an early venture was designing a website for his mother’s business - Lynn Weinberg of SilkScapes Designs. In 2006 at 31 years old, Weinberg sold his social media start up company, Names Database, to Classmates.com for $10 million. But unlike Facebook creator Mark Zukerberg who is portrayed in the movie “The Social Network” as power hungry, Gabriel Weinberg’s interest is in helping others. After selling Names Database, he began distinguishing himself as an angel investor, helping others begin their own companies. Gabriel is the father of two boys, Ryan, age 6 months, and Eli, age 2 ½. Gabriel and his wife Lauren McCann, a statistician in cancer research at Glaxco Smith-Kline, both work from their Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, suburban home and are able to balance busy work schedules with parenthood. Weinberg believes blogging to be an important exercise in taking a risk as well as in gaining a following - both of which are crucial to being successful in business. And he agrees that story is also the basis for selling an idea. “Story is (important) to customer development… by talking to people, you craft a story that’s compelling and you have to communicate.” For any of us contemplating a start-up venture, Weinberg says, “Go for it! Don’t try one thing and think that you are done. You might not succeed at first, but keep trying!”

THANKS FOR GIVING 2011 Needs Your Help The Center for Family Resources Prepares for 26th Annual Food Distribution Program This Thanksgiving, The Center for Family Resources (CFR) will host its 26th annual Thanks for Giving 2011, a food distribution program that will provide up to 1,500 Cobb families with a box filled with food items needed to enjoy a full Thanksgiving meal at home together. This year, it will take nearly 70,000 food items to ensure every family served will receive everything they need for Thanksgiving. The coordination of Thanks for Giving 2011 would not be possible without the support of local individuals, schools, businesses and civic organizations. CFR relies entirely on these groups to make the Thanksgiving food distribution possible. Currently, there are food drives planned at local colleges and Cobb County and City of Marietta schools. Businesses, churches, neighborhood associations and civic organizations are also supporting the effort. Food collection barrels have been provided for each food drive participant, including the 2010 winner for largest food drive, Harrison High School. Please consider helping the effort by hosting a food drive. Food drive participants are encouraged to collect canned fruit or vegetables, dried or canned potatoes, stuffing mix, non-refrigerated pie crust and canned pie

fillings. A full list of needed items can be found by visiting www.TheCFR.org. Food drop-off dates are scheduled for Wednesday, November 16, and Thursday, November 17, from 10 am to 4 pm at Jim R. Miller Park, Marietta. Distribution of the food boxes to registered families will take place on Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19, at Jim R. Miller Park. Numerous volunteer shifts are available to assist with the drop-off dates and distribution but the slots are filling up fast. To signup for a volunteer shift, visit www.TheCFR.org. For more information on hosting a food drive, sponsorships or volunteering, contact Jennifer Cain at 770-428-2601 or via email at JenniferCain@TheCFR.org. Since 1960, The Center for Family Resources has helped tens of thousands of low-income families with employment, education, and housing services; leadership development programs; mentoring opportunities; and temporary financial and food assistance. The staff at CFR is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by helping families acquire the resources they need to become independent and self-sufficient.

East Cobber Creates Battle Saint Bracelets By Kathleen Kite-Powell

ss Battle Saint creator Cynthia LeMay

Cynthia LeMay’s nephew, Simon, came home from being deployed with a “saint bracelet” given to him by a chaplain. The chaplain had passed out these saint bracelets in hopes of protecting them in battle and to bring the soldiers home safely to their families. That gave Cynthia, an East Cobb resident, the idea to commercially create wooden bracelets with images of saints relevant to our troops.

The Battle Saint bracelet is non-denominational and is worn by people of various religions. For example, one saint whose image is featured on the bracelet is Archangel Michael, the patron saint of the armed forces, fighter pilots, and paratroopers. Cynthia says, “We feel that it’s not about whether you support the war or not, but about supporting our servicemen and women who sacrifice so much for our freedom.” The Battle Saint bracelet sells for $5. $1 from each purchase is donated to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund supports soldiers and their families by providing a rehabilitation center for those military personnel who have been catastrophically disabled at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence for the treatment of traumatic brain injury located on the Navy campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Cynthia’s business has strong ties to the military. She has a son, three nephews and two nieces serving in the military. “Our goal is to support the troops while they fight and help provide needed resources when they return,” pledges Cynthia. Battle Saint bracelets can only be found online, at www.battlesaint.com.

Soldiers carry or wear these Battle Saint bracelets. Cynthia shares, “They keep them close to their hearts, while others want it in a pocket, so they can touch it.” When one soldier “miraculously survived an IED attack,” he vowed to “not take the bracelet off for the rest of his life.” One lady’s rush order was to bury her husband

Toys For Tots Seeks Donations three months each year. It is a program dedicated to helping in the development of our nation’s most valuable natural resource: our children. A shiny new toy at Christmas lets these youngsters know that someone cares.

As the holidays are upon us and planning for Christmas arrives, it’s also time to think about doing something special for children in need. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Campaign is again under way, giving local residents an opportunity to purchase a toy for a boy or girl outside their family. Toys for Tots began 64 years ago when Maj. Bill Hendricks and a group of Marine reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed more than 5,000 toys to needy children. Maj. Hendricks’ idea caught on and was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots the following year and expanded it into a nationwide program. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official activity of the U.S. Marine Corps and an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve. Today, Toys for Tots is the Marine Corps’ premier community action program and one of the nation’s flagship Christmas charitable causes. Toys for Tots is the only charitable endeavor within the Department of Defense which reaches outside the military establishment to give something back to the communities. Toys for Tots has enjoyed over a half century of success because of the support of millions of caring Americans, local communities, and corporate sponsors, plus the dedication and hard work of thousands of U.S. Marines. Toys for Tots is a program which brings all elements of a community together in a common cause for

The area Toys for Tots coordinator, Mr. A.T. Wilson, is in charge of finding enough money and toys to fulfill the 900,000 toy requests for children in the 16 counties throughout metro Atlanta. “Many people in metro Atlanta have been hit hard this year with the economy and job losses so we are working extra hard asking for more donations and drop-off points,” says Mr. Wilson. Toys for Tots collects new unwrapped toys. The Marines ask that toys brought to the hundreds of drop-off points be unwrapped so they can be sorted and given to the right child. Toys are to be appropriate for children from birth to 12 years. While the Marines organize, coordinate and manage the program, the ultimate success depends on the support of the local residents and their generosity. Here are more ways you can help this year’s Toys for Tots campaign: • Organize an event. • Volunteer to help sort toys. • Donate money by sending a check or money order to: North Atlanta Toys for Tots, 2700 Ivy Mill Drive, Buford, GA 30519 • Conduct your own toy collection. • Provide a service such as media or transportation support for the campaign. • Provide a philanthropic donation of cash or toys. For information regarding volunteering or hosting an event, contact Mr. A.T. Wilson at 678-887-5179 or e-mail: christmastoys@att.net.

Is Your Car Road Ready For The Trip? Thanksgiving is the busiest travel holiday of the year. It is the perfect time of year to make sure your car is in perfect running condition. About a week or so prior to getting on the road, it would be wise to bring your car in to your local auto expert and have them thoroughly examine your car for any problems or safety concerns. Our ASE Certified Master Technicians will check and fill all of your vehicle’s vital fluids including the transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, fuel injection, antifreeze, and windshield washer fluid. We will also perform a battery, starter, and alternator test, examine all of the belts and hoses, check your brakes, completely inspect your suspension, make sure all of your lights are working, and we will check your tire pressure and evaluate your tires’ condition. We will make sure your tires, and vehicle is road trip ready. Ensuring you have had all these items inspected and running properly will guarantee peace of mind on your road trip. Another item, which is often overlooked, is the headlight lenses. Cloudy, foggy, or yellowed headlight lenses can cause impaired visibility making night driving difficult. Our headlight restoration service, value priced at $129.99, will restore beam clarity and improve luminosity increasing night driving visibility. Sellars Goodyear takes pride in maintaining our customers’ vehicles. We love our customers and feel that it is our responsibility to educate and inform them of their vehicle’s condition, so their car is the least of their worries during this holiday season.

ss Joanne Hardeman with her exotic cat, Zoe.

Dog person or cat person: We’re usually born into one camp or the other. East Cobb resident Joanne Hardeman considered herself a dog person for much of her adult life. Then she got a cat. Three years later, she’s co-manager of the third largest cat show in the United States, also known as the Cotton States Cat Club 73rd Annual Cat Show, which takes place this year Nov. 5-6 at Gwinnett Center in Duluth. In 2009, when her co-manager and friend Connie Wardlaw asked Hardeman to take care of a kitten while she was out of town, Hardeman was skeptical. Wardlaw had been showing cats for more than 30 years. “I told her I’d never taken care of an inside cat before,” Hardeman said. “The only contact I’d had with cats were the ones that roamed the farm where I grew up. She reassured me that she’d bring everything I needed and walk me through it. That kitten never left my house.” Hardeman now owns six exotic cats and kittens, some of which are now or will be show cats. The Cotton States Cat Show features Cat Fanciers’ Association registered breeds as well as household pets. Judges evaluate more than 300 cats according to CFA standards such as condition of coat, body structure and the color and shape of eyes. The show attracts exhibitors from all over the U.S. and even Europe, plus more than 1,000 spectators. “This is one of the top cat shows in the United States,” Hardeman said. “We’re known for our elaborate ring decoration, and we always make the show a big celebration. Of course, we’re Southerners. That’s what we do.” This year’s theme is “Purrfect Holidays,” which means the rings will be decorated for New Year’s Eve through Christmas and every holiday in between. Rescue organizations will be present for attendees hoping to adopt a cat of their own. “It’s a great opportunity to see really beautiful cats and get to know different breeds,” said Hardeman. “The more I learn about the breeds, the more I appreciate the good qualities of each one.” For more information, visit their web site www.garande.com or visit www.cottonstatescatclub.org.

What do I do if my dog or cat bites someone? You will be required to make a decision about the future of your pet. Confinement is a must under the Cobb County Animal Control Ordinance. This quarantine/confinement is necessary for 10 days. You can choose to quarantine the animal at your vet or the Cobb County Animal Control Shelter. If you do not choose to keep the animal because of the bite, you can request that the animal be put to sleep and tested for rabies. Either of these options are not pleasant, but because of the potential for a rabies exposure and/or liability on your part you must make the decision that is best for your situation. Animal Control does not normally adopt out animals that have bitten or scratched, but every situation is considered individually.

Witness if you will Gallus Domesticus…the Backyard Chicken. A mere few pounds of feather, bone, and muscle; a creature regarded by many as a rather humorous, though not so intelligent agent of food production. And yet make note of a most singular phenomenon now taking shape across suburb and city. From backyard eggs to the family’s new favorite pet, the urban chicken is forging a fresh place in the pecking order of human importance.” --Mad City Chickens The Backyard Chickens Alliance of Cobb County will present a viewing of the 2009 documentary, Mad City Chickens, on November 7, at 7PM at Sacred Tapestry UMC, 3000 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta/East Cobb. The admission is free with donations accepted. Concessions will be available. There will be a Question and Answer session afterwards. Mad City Chickens tells the story of Backyard Chickens in Madison, Wisconsin. Mad City Chickens is a sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical look at the people who keep urban chickens in their backyards. From chicken experts and authors to a rescued landfill hen or an inexperienced family that decides to take the poultry plunge—and even a mad professor and giant hen taking to the streets—it’s a humorous and heartfelt trip through the world of backyard chickendom. Mad City Chickens deftly weaves multiple stories and contextual issues on city chickens and their keepers in a non-linear fashion that one rarely sees in a documentary. From leading experts to urban newbies, experience the humor and heart of what’s fast becoming an international backyard chicken movement. East Cobb resident, Joseph Pond, created the Backyard Chickens Alliance of Cobb County to bring together like minded people to raise awareness about Backyard Chickens and to change the laws in Cobb County that currently prevent citizens from owning chickens as pets. Their goal is to change the zoning ordinance that essentially outlaws Backyard Chickens in Cobb County by gaining community support and working with the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. ss Karon Carpentieri, owner of Hot Dogs Cool Cats For many of us, pets are family. We love them, and we want what is best for them. After adopting her Yorkshire Terrier, Bentley and two other dogs, Lexie and Milo, Karon Carpentieri, owner of Hot Dogs Cool Cats, became someone who loves to pamper her pets. Before opening Hot Dogs Cool Cats, Carpentieri traveled extensively for her corporate job until she realized she needed a life change. She opened her pet boutique and grooming spa in Paper Mill Village in East Cobb because she knew there were many pet lovers in this area, and she saw a need for quality pet services. The boutique at Hot Dogs Cool Cats offers a selection of carefully researched grain-free dog and cat food with the healthiest ingredients. They also carry unique collars and harnesses, fun outfits and also gifts for humans who love their pets. Carpentieri’s artwork decorates the funky and colorful showroom, and her personal furry companions contribute to the welcoming atmosphere. The shop recently expanded to accommodate their growing grooming spa and services. Hot Dogs Cool Cats is a “no muzzle” facility, and the groomers work with each dog to alleviate any fears from past treatments. They also look at the dog’s fur and skin condition to customize which type of shampoo will best achieve a healthier coat and be most soothing for their skin. “Our pet owners tell us their dogs are eager to come through our doors because they know they will be well treated here,” says Carpentieri. “Our goal is to make this a positive experience for everyone.” The boutique also sends out a monthly newsletter to its customers and hosts pet-focused events like Yappy Hours and holiday portraits. Hot Dogs Cool Cats now provides obedience training classes onsite and continues to offer Brushing 101 classes and Microchip clinics. Stop by Hot Dogs Cool Cats at 255 Village Parkway, Suite 720, Marietta, 30067 in the Paper Mill Village. To schedule an appointment, call 770-858-1000. Email Karon at karon@hotdogscoolcats.net or visit www.hotdogscoolcats.net to learn more about their pet pampering services and products. P A I D   A D V E R T I S E M E N T

ss Owner Laura Fanoe and her brother, Dennis Farrell, Jr. model highly popular True Religion jeans with a casual shirt and jacket. All can be purchased at The Hub Boutique.

Following in the footsteps of her beloved grandmother’s retail store in Indiana, East Cobb resident Laura Fanoe is opening a boutique full of upscale jeans, cute little tops, accessories, and unique gift items. Laura gave her shop the same name as grandma’s shop, The Hub Boutique “The Center of Fashion”, as the ultimate nod to grandma. She says, “My grandmother and I were best friends.” The Hub is still a family affair, as Laura’s mother-in-law, Dorris, family members, and her best friend are helping out. As a Marietta native, I wanted to give local women (and men) the accessibility to great designer clothing without the hassle of time consuming commute. I want The Hub Boutique to be your “go to” store when you are in need of a wardrobe/attitude pick-me-up,” shares Laura. The Hub Boutique opened for business November 3, just in time for colder weather and the search for holiday gifts! Men and women of all ages can find high-end jeans at The Hub. Laura had both normal and a-bit-heavier people try on different jeans, until she found the best brands to carry: jeans that make everyone look great! She said, “The idea is to have something for everybody…to [have customers] find the perfect fit.” At The Hub Boutique, you can shop for upscale, wellcut jeans or lower-priced gifts. Explore not just shades of indigo denim, but several other color options. NYDJ, the newly re-branded Not Your Daughter Jeans, are available. The store carries everything from the cleaner-looking Henry & Bell to the very trendy look of True Religion. “We are incorporating San Diego Hat Company merchandise…including a really cool scarf that has a pocket,” said Laura. Another unique item is a soy candle that makes a warm wax you rub on your hands, as a kind of lotion. Who knows what other cute things you might find? Check out The Hub Boutique at Merchant’s Walk shopping center, 1311 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 140, in Marietta/East Cobb. Visit their stylish and very informative website at www.TheHubBoutique.com

LaVida Massage:

‘Tis the Season to Treat Yourself with Affordable Luxury The bustle of the holiday season is quickly approaching and along with all the fun and festivities often comes an unwelcome guest – stress. East Cobbers looking to relax and unwind have a new choice this season thanks to the recent addition of LaVida Massage in the Parkaire Kroger shopping center. Opened October 1 by East Cobber Terry Sharp and his business partner Duane Goodwin, LaVida is a health and wellness center offering massage and aesthetician services in an atmosphere of affordable luxury. The LaVida concept is relatively simple – to offer clients an individually customized experience with a highly trained professional at a reasonable price in an environment that appeals to both men and women. With the first step inside LaVida Massage, clients know they’re in for a unique experience. The neutral décor calms the senses and the tranquil music and mild aromatherapy set the stage for a relaxing visit. Every therapist is nationally certified and licensed in the state of Georgia. Therapists must also complete continuing education credits every two years. LaVida’s therapists are trained in a variety of massage modalities including Swedish, couples, deep tissue, neuromuscular, trigger point, hot stone, prenatal, chair and corporate massage. At the initial appointment, clients complete a health assessment to assist their therapist in determining the appropriate combination of modalities for their particular needs including pain management, stress relief or as a reward. For new clients, a 60-minute massage is $39.95 and subsequent visits are $69.95. Clients can also choose to join “The Life Benefits Program” which lowers the price to $49.95 per month. This no-contract program entitles members to one service per month. Additional services can be purchased at a discounted rate and unused services are rolled over each month, ensuring a client will not lose the benefit they’ve purchased. You can even add a family member for free, so that they can enjoy the benefits too. LaVida Massage is located at 4880 Lower Roswell Road, Suite 70. They are open seven days a week and appointments can be booked by calling 770-973-6385 or book on-line at http://marietta.ga.lavidamassage.com. Find them on Facebook at LaVida Massage of Marietta (East Cobb). Gift cards are available at the store and online and are good at any of the LaVida locations nationwide, including five in the metro Atlanta area. Take advantage of the LaVida Massage Holiday Specials and give the gift of massage: purchase three $50 gift cards and receive a certificate for a free massage. See store for additional holiday offers.

Don’t Let Food Spoil the Holidays When family and friends gather during the holidays, don’t let unsafe food spoil the festivities. Bacteria is the invisible enemy in food because you can’t see it, taste or smell it. It can multiply rapidly in moist, warm conditions and cause food-borne illness when consumed. Brooke Schembri, RD, Director of WellStar Corporate & Community Health, recomss Brooke Shembri, RD mends the following tips to ensure you have a safe holiday celebration: • Wash hands and food contact surfaces often to prevent the spread of bacteria from one food item to another. • Always keep cooked foods separate from raw items. Store raw meat on a shelf below cooked items and produce in the refrigerator to prevent raw juices from contaminating other foods. • Never thaw meats at room temperature. Thaw your turkey in a refrigerator set below 40 degrees. Plan ahead because a 20-pound turkey will take about three days to completely thaw in the refrigerator. • Make sure foods are cooked to the proper temperatures (165 degrees for a whole turkey) to kill harmful bacteria. • NEVER leave perishable foods at room temperature for more than two hours. • Always keep hot foods hot and cold food cold. The danger zone for bacteria growth is between 40 and 140 degrees. • Place leftovers in small containers so they will cool quickly and refrigerate as soon as possible. Be sure to eat leftover turkey within 3-4 days. • When in doubt, always throw out foods that you suspect may have been stored unsafely.

This Holiday Season Let the Spirit of Giving Begin With Blood Donation Blood is traditionally in short supply during the holiday months, but hospital and patient needs remain the same. You can help alleviate this shortfall in any of the following ways: >Participate in a blood drive between November 1 and December 31. >Help organize a blood drive at your workplace, school or church if one is not already in place. >Give blood at any of the hospitals or blood collection centers and encourage colleagues, friends, and family to come along. Donors of all blood types are welcome, but there is an urgent need for type O negative, B negative and A negative blood donors. Eligible blood donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors with type O (positive and negative), B negative and A negative blood should consider an automated red cell donation, a process in which only red cells are donated. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) or visit redcrossblood. org. Thank you for giving to others by donating blood this holiday season.

Coach’s Corner

for the business of life

With Peter Allen

I Never Want To Retire. . . Yes? No? Maybe?

Planning your financial resource is a challenge, as the process is based on many unknown variables. It is not the only thing you need to plan for. Transitioning to the next stage in life doesn’t have to include a final retirement. You should include in your planning any area that would be pertinent to your happiness in that stage of life. Some of the areas you would want to include in your planning are: • What are your Retirement Options? • The how, what, when of the Transition Process. • Attitude toward Retirement. • The Reorientation Process. • Your Mental, Physical and Spiritual Health.

• What is your leisure interest and do you need to create more?

• How to enjoy and make this the best time of your life.

These and many other areas can be identified and measured. Together we discover exactly what is right for you right now. Do you want to bypass all the costly mistakes you’ll make trying to figure it out alone? I’m ready to walk you through a step by step process that can be the beginning for you to create the Retirement Life of Your Dreams.

EXPO

Some people want to work until they sail off into the sunset. Others may continue to work because they have to, while others can’t wait to quit and focus on other areas of their lives. None of these choices is wrong, but in whichever case you should plan for retirement. You may love your work and what you do forever, or you may realize that you have to work. Or your finances may be adequate enough that you don’t need to work. Regardless of your situation you should do some degree of planning.

The Best to You! Pete 770-977-2232 More Information at my website www.breakingfreecoaching.com. P A I D   A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Local Families Need to “Senior Safety Proof” Their Homes We usually think of our home as the safest place to be. But did you know that the home is the most common location where people take a fatal fall? In fact, this week alone, more than 30,000 Americans over the age of 65 will be seriously injured from a fall. One out of three adults age 65 and older falls each year and nearly a third of them will live with discomfort from the fall for the rest of their lives. And nearly a third of those who survive that fall will be forced to live with injuries that will affect their independence the rest of their lives. Whether you are a senior living on your own, or are a young family hosting senior citizens for upcoming holiday gatherings, here’s a simple checklist to help you fall-proof your home:

Safety Proofing the Home: • Remove boxes, newspapers and electrical cords from halls

Adding Safety Devices: • Hand rails for both sides of the bed • Non-slip treads for wooden steps • Raised toilet seat or one with arm rests • Grab bars for shower or tub • Sturdy plastic seat for shower or tub plus hand-held shower nozzle

Checking Seniors’ Shoes: • Get rid of high heels, floppy slippers, shoes with slick soles • Have foot size measured each time seniors buy shoes – foot size changes and shoes that are too big can make you fall • Avoid extra-thick soles

Lighting-Up Living Space:

• Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high-traffic areas

• Place night lights in bedroom, bathroom and hallways

• Help repair loose, wooden floor boards and carpeting right away

• Place lamp near side of bed • Consider switching traditional light switches for glow in the dark switches.

• Store clothing, dishes, food, medication and all necessities within reach

Every day is Independence Day. • A daily delicious lunch or dinner included,

• Independent Senior Living: two-bedroom,

served in our elegant dining room, plus a continental breakfast

one-bedroom & efficiency apartments available • Full monthly programs and activities calendar (social activities, outings, performances, pastoral care programs & more!)

• Services include 24-hour security,

• Free daytime and weekend membership to WellStar Health Place (indoor pool, walking track, senior exercise classes, exercise equipment & more!)

• Guest accommodations for visitors • All utilities included, except cable TV

and telephone • On-site beauty salon/barber shop

housekeeping, emergency call system, • Located on WellStar Kennestone individual and group transportation, Hospital campus health resources, sundries shop, ceramics, • Full-service Assisted Living and Memory crafts, and covered parking Care communities also available on-site

ss Savannah Court residents enjoy a historical field trip together.

Nestled in the heart of East Cobb, Savannah Court Senior Assisted Living Community provides assisted living and secured memory care services to its residents. Each suite offers beautiful views, and many apartments overlook a picturesque backyard stream and gazebo. With a daily calendar filled with activities and entertainment, there is too much to do at Savannah Court for residents to be bored or inactive. Savannah Court houses a large activity center, fireplace lounge, library, ice cream parlor and game room. Women and men can get their hair done at the onsite beauty and barber shop, and a bus transports residents to medical appointments, shopping excursions and local attractions. Licensed for 89 residents, the facility also offers respite care for those who need transitional assistance after an illness, surgery or a hospital stay. Their Day Service is designed for those who only want to stay during day-time hours. The Cottage, a secured memory care residence, is located within Savannah Court and is a safe and caring environment for those living with dementia, Alzheimer’s and related memory impairments. His new book picks up where the story of the Bell Bomber Plant left off and traces the evolution of the plant from its reopening in 1951 during the Korean War to build B-47 Stratofortress bombers up through the present era of F-22 Raptor fighters and C-130J Hercules. Join us for this heartwarming story. 58 November 2011

The History Corner: Grand Plantations and the Biltmore Estate Wednesday, November 16 10am – 12pm Free. Registration required. This capital was then used to build majestic castles, America’s Castles. In this segment of America’s Castles we will have the opportunity to visit John Hampden Randolph’s 64-room castle on a 7,000 acre sugar plantation, Nottoway, and Peter Little’s Rosalie, built for his 13-year-old bride. Meet the colorful Irish immigrant Frederick Stanton who became one of the richest men in America and built the 5-story Stanton Hall. Finally, in Natchez we will visit Dr. Haller Nutt’s Longwood with the 100-foot tall octagonal wonder referred to as “Nutt’s Folly.” To top off the morning, we will journey to North Carolina for a peak at George Vanderbilt’s 250-room chateau, the Biltmore Estate. Surviving Holiday Weight Gain Friday, November 18 10 – 11am Free. Registration required. ‘Tis the season for holiday feasts, a calendar packed with parties and cold weather that hinders our normal exercise schedule. Biography – Life Stories through Time: Amelia Earhart: Queen of the Air Wednesday, November 30 10 – 11am Free. Registration required. An uncommon heroine, a legendary aviator, and the focus of one of the greatest mysteries of all time, Amelia Earhart was destined to make her mark on history. Even as she was annihilating existing aviation records, her unconventional short hair, pants, and leather jacket had already made her an undisputed icon. Drawing on extensive archival footage and interviews, this DVD examines Earhart’s dramatic story and, bolstered by newly discovered evidence, attempts to explain her mysterious disappearance while attempting to fly around the world. Join us in discovering this fascinating woman.
