features Chuck,
22 years is a long time for anything. Like marriage. Or living in the same house. Or working for the same company. But in this challenging magazine industry, 22 years is an eternity. Many local magazines have come and gone over the years, but for those with an interest in reading about the East Cobb community, EAST COBBER magazine has been the go-to publication for more than two decades! This October edition marks the 22nd anniversary of the EAST COBBER monthly. 255 monthly issues, 20 community parades, a weekly E-newsletter (with 21,000+ email subscribers), a website, a Facebook page, (and for me, 3 children later), I am still focused on informing local residents about our good neighbors, special events and local issues in East Cobb County. Since 1993, the EAST COBBER has been publishing articles about East Cobb volunteers, artists and advertisers, clubs and community leaders, musicians and moms. The EAST COBBER front cover will continue to feature those people in East Cobb County making this area an even better place to live. The EAST COBBER has also become well-known for its special sections, such as, our Camp Guide, Pet Guide, Preschool Guide—and more! This issue features our tenth annual Private School Guide as well as our monthly Community Calendar, Dining Guide and Health & Wellness sections. It has always been my intention to provide useful and relevant information that you can’t find anywhere else and that focuses exclusively on East Cobb. I hope you enjoy reading the EAST COBBER as much as I enjoy putting each edition together month after month. After so many years of meeting readers and business owners, I am reminded everyday of how many really nice people there are in this community. East Cobb has so many people who take the initiative to help out, to share their opinions and/or talents, in order to make East Cobb County a better place to live. The annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival is another example of neighbors coming together to celebrate our great community, and for me, as the producer/director of the parade, I am able to witness first hand the genuine kindness, generosity, and cooperation East Cobbers demonstrate to make what has now become the largest parade in all of Cobb County such a rousing success. See pages 6-9 for some photos taken from this year’s special event. Visit our website www.eastcobber.com to view 500 more parade & festival photos! I may put the magazine out, but it belongs to the East Cobb community. Special credit goes to the East Cobbers that call me to discuss story ideas, submit articles, and to advertise. Of course, I am grateful to those who just pick up the paper at one of our 500+ drop-off points every month and actually read the paper! In a world of conglomerates and sensational journalism, your kind comments and constructive criticisms inspire me to continue my work as publisher of a truly grass-roots publication that promotes the positive. Here’s to another great 22 years!

The 20th Annual East Cobber Parade On Saturday, September 12, East Cobb residents came together under sunny skies to continue an annual hometown tradition: the 20th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. Over 1,800 parade participants representing 115 different groups marched down Johnson Ferry Road to celebrate East Cobb! The parade staged at the Mt. Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot and stepped off at 10am. Crowds lined Johnson Ferry Road early to get the best view. Kids of all ages enjoyed the floats, decorated dogs, high school marching bands, and vintage cars as they marched down the parade path. East Cobb schools honored their principals and/or their “Teachers-of-the-Year.” The EAST COBBER Parade has earned the nickname, “The Candy Parade,” because just about every entry throws candy to the crowd. The EAST COBBER appreciates the superb talents of the Cobb County Government’s Communications Department staff. The staff came out early on Saturday morning to produce the COBB TV23 broadcast of the EAST COBBER Parade. The EAST COBBER Parade can be viewed in its entirety on youtube.com. Many, many thanks to Cobb County Police Special Operations Unit and Cobb County Department of Transportation for ensuring the safety of parade participants and parade watchers. Heartfelt appreciation goes to WellStar. As the presenting sponsor, WellStar provides crucial financial support that ensures the success of this long-standing special event that has become a staple in East Cobb.

EAST COBB ROBOTICS CLUB DEVELOPS STEM SKILLS East Cobb Robotics’ mission is to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) which they accomplish in two ways: by building a robot that will compete in a game with other robots, and by sharing their enthusiasm for STEM with the students and community. They are a fully committed FIRST FRC ( FIRST Robotics Competition) team dedicated to helping the community at large by developing interest in STEM. FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". It is an international youth organization that operates the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL), and Junior FIRST LEGO League competitions.
The United States has developed as a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers, and innovators. In a world that’s becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know, but by what you can do with what you know, it’s more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. These are the types of skills that students learn by studying science, technology, engineering, and math—subjects collectively known as STEM. All young people should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. But, right now, not enough of our youth have access to quality STEM learning opportunities and too few students see these disciplines as springboards for their careers. Attention all East Cobb area high school age students, your future is calling. There is now a community-based organization, East Cobb Robotics, that is creating opportunities to participate in one of the fastest growing areas of STEM: Robotics! Originally formed to help enhance Pope High School's STEM curriculum in 2013, East Cobb Robotics is now an independently operated 501(c)(3) organization serving all eligible high school age students in the Marietta and East Cobb area, filling the demand for a STEM-based program for students of all educational backgrounds, including home schooled and private school students.
10 October 2015
FIRST's mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. FRC is an internationally recognized organization that sponsors robotics competitions involving over 41,000 schools and community groups in 80 countries for students K-12. East Cobb Robotics partners with companies such as GE, United Technologies, NASA and others to prepare students to further enhance their education and career goals. Their industry and corporate mentors form a vibrant, experienced leadership team which trains and helps oversee all activities. For the robotics portion of their mission, given a six-week build time, students receive guidance from mentors, analyze the game’s aspects, and design, build, and program a robot which conforms to the specifications required by FIRST to play the game. Following the six-week build season, they compete with the robot at multiple area events. Depending on their level of success, they may earn a trip to the World Championship event. East Cobb Robotics also reaches out to the community to share their excitement about STEM with elementary and middle school students, and participate in community events such as the local EAST COBBER Parade and various festivals, allowing young children to see and drive robots. East Cobb Robotics offers students a great way to share their enthusiasm about robotics with others in the area. Join East Cobb Robotics and you’ll find a community of like-minded, dedicated individuals and a sense of camaraderie, and excitement while developing STEM skills. UNDERSTANDING CURRENT EDUCATION REFORM PROPOSALS IS A COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY By Beth Freeman and Ann Duffy, Legislation & Advocacy Committee Chairs, East Cobb County Council of PTAs As parents, we have countless opportunities to improve the educational experience for our children and their classmates. We volunteer in the media center, in classrooms and at school events. We raise funds for educational software, class field trips, educational materials and other instructional needs. We serve on local PTA boards and councils. By doing these things, we are advocating for our own children and the children in our schools. It is also important as community members to advocate for students throughout East Cobb, the state of Georgia and the nation. It starts with a mission. PTA is one of the largest advocacy organizations in the nation. Its Mission is: To make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. On the national level, PTA is actively involved with federal policy makers; here at home, your local PTAs are hard at work educating family members and the community on local and statewide issues. The East Cobb County Council PTA (ECCC PTA) is committed to understanding key education policy issues both here at home and across the state. Our main goal is to ensure that every child has an opportunity for a high-quality education. What can we do to ensure public education serves the needs of all of Georgia’s children? In order to effectively advocate, we must be informed about statewide policy issues and understand how they impact public education. During the ECCC PTA Fall General Meeting and Priority Committee Fair on September 8, 2015, the ECCC PTA hosted a small panel discussion, “Georgia Education Reform Progress.” The panel featured Georgia Senator Lindsey Tippins, Cobb County School District Superintendent Chris Ragsdale and Dickerson Middle School Principal, Dr. Carole Brink. The Georgia Education Reform Progress panel provided ECCC PTA members and guests with insight into issues that state policymakers, including the state legislature, will be reviewing this coming year. These issues include a potential departure from the Quality Budget Education (QBE) formula (the current state student education funding formula), offering students more choice among public school options, permitting students to “Move on When Ready,” increasing local school and district control, and recruiting and retaining the best teachers. These topics are currently in front of the Georgia Education Reform Commission (Commission), which has the purpose of evaluating proposals to improve Georgia’s educational system. The 12 October 2015
panelists addressed these topics as experienced leaders in the education field, and as either a member of the Commission (Senator Tippins) or members of the Education Advisory Board (Superintendent Ragsdale and Dr. Brink). In general, it was evident from the panel discussion that it is extremely important for education policy changes to be assessed carefully and thoroughly, as the goal is nothing less than for all of our students to have greater academic performance and increased opportunities to succeed. On the issue of education funding, the panelists commented that it is premature to assess whether a different formula from the QBE will be preferable, because the Commission has not completed its assessment of it, but that the current QBE would be fine as long it is funded to provide the resources to meet individual student needs. The panelists identified items for which improved QBE funding is needed including, but not limited to, technology advances that improve educational delivery, teacher healthcare and retirement, and funds to respond to the recruitment and retention of the best teachers. Also addressed was an issue that has been a constant for the past several years – state austerity cuts to education funding. State education funding dollars have increased as the economy has improved, BUT fully funding education should remain a high priority. With respect to expanding public school options, the panelists recommended that it is essential to consider the practical operation of school choice options – such as providing student transportation, the hiring of the appropriate number of teachers and staff, and ensuring that physical classroom space is available, among other logistical requirements. (Note that some public school choice options are already available in Cobb County – through a school lottery and magnet high schools.) In general, the panelists expressed support for the Move On When Ready program. This program permits students to use traditional educational instruction, online resources, more flexible testing opportunities and other educational tools to “move on to the next level of educational instruction or completion” as a student has mastered each level and not be tied to traditional progressive timelines. The panelists cautioned that it is important to consider the social and maturity levels of the student, to be sure that the student is actually ready to “move on.” The panelists expressed approval for increased flexibility and control, noting that the Cobb County School District already operates under a state IE2, Investment in Educational Excellence contract, which
EAST COBBER
www.eastcobber.com
allows freedom to foster new opportunities to personalize learning and prepare students for their future. In closing remarks, the panelists highlighted that it is increasingly difficult to recruit and retain high-quality teachers, particularly in high-needs subject areas such as math, science and special education, which must remain a significant priority for education policy makers, as it is vital to the future of our education system. Clear from the discussion was the panelists’ dedication to improving student academic performance, and that there is no simple formula to adequately address the multi-faceted needs that surround school funding. The ECCC PTA encourages all citizens to stay informed about these issues, discuss them with other community members and share opinions with the Board of Education members and legislative representatives. These issues are important to the quality of education in our schools, in the County and in the State. The Education Reform Commission is currently considering reform proposals and must report to the Governor by December 2015. For further information see the Commission website (gov. georgia.gov/education-reform-commission). To stay informed on all PTA related legislative activities, the ECCC PTA recommends signing up for Capitol Watch (www.georgiapta.org/issues-action/capitol-watch) Beth Freeman lives in the Chestnut Springs subdivision with her husband, David. Beth is a volunteer at Kincaid Elementary School PTA, where her son is in the 5th grade. Ann Duffy lives in the Mountain Creek subdivision with her husband, Matt. Ann is a volunteer at Pope High School PTSA, where her children attend.

HOME SAFETY AND COMFORT TIPS FOR COOLER TEMPS
The arrival of fall and cooler temperatures inspires us to decorate porches with pumpkins, plant pansies and have our furnaces serviced to ensure they will work properly on that first cold morning. Debbie Abernathy of E. Smith Heating & Air Conditioning offers some safety and comfort tips for your home heating maintenance. Abernathy stresses that having your furnace checked out, cleaned and the air filters changed on a regular basis is important to ensure that all equipment is in proper working order so your furnace will perform as it should and good air quality is maintained. “But just as important is what that routine checkup may reveal in terms of home safety,” she explains. “A crack in your furnace heat exchanger can allow dangerous carbon monoxide fumes to leak into your home. When carbon monoxide is released, there is no scent and no way to know about the problem. Routine checkups reveal faulty equipment issues such as this.” One home comfort tip is that homeowners with family members who suffer from allergies, asthma or general sinus issues can benefit from installing humidifiers on their systems. According to Abernathy, the relative humidity, which refers to the amount of water vapor in the air, is greatly reduced when we begin heating our homes. “As the air becomes drier, people with respiratory issues begin experiencing discomfort or their conditions worsen,” she says. “Sometimes people bump up the temperature setting, which actually just adds to heating costs, and think that helps with the comfort level. Installing a humidifier to monitor and maintain the relative humidity can help those with respiratory conditions. Humidifiers also help in maintaining the property moisture levels for woods floors, wood furniture and casings around doors.” E. Smith Heating & Air Conditioning can lend you a hand in both of these areas. During the month of October, E. Smith will perform a comprehensive check on your furnace for $75 for one furnace and $50 for each additional unit. During November, the charge will be $79 for the first furnace and $60 for additional ones. Service appointments are scheduled between 7:30 AM and 7:00 PM. Also through November 15, E. Smith and Carrier are offering equipment rebates that can save you up to $3,100. For more than 50 years, East Cobb families and businesses have relied on the E. Smith family to install, service and maintain their heating and cooling systems. Founded in March 1962 by Earl and Rachel Smith, E. Smith continues to be a family owned and operated company and enjoys helping those in the community. The company helps groups and causes including the Center for Family Resources, YWCA of Northwest Georgia, Cobb Community Gardens, Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County, Garrison Mill Elementary School garden and the Earl Smith Strand Theatre. MASSEY AUTOMOTIVE CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN EAST COBB
When our cars need repair or maintenance, it can be challenging to find someone we trust to fix them correctly and at a fair price. Look no further than Massey Automotive. They have been taking care of cars for 40 years, and their reputation has helped them grow and expand exponentially during this time. Frederick Massey started repairing automobiles as a Georgia Tech student in 1975 out of the trunk of his car. After graduation, he realized he could start his own repair shop while paying an affordable rent in growing Cobb County. He fell in love with the area and decided to grow his business and family here. Over the years, he moved Massey Automotive to different locations as his business expanded. For the past 14 years, he’s been on Lower Roswell Road in a state-ofthe-art, green building. Frederick believes the secret to his growth is that his mechanics repair automobiles correctly the first time. He has stood behind his team’s work for 40 years. “We also follow up with customers to make sure they are satisfied and that the issue has been resolved,” says Frederick.
repairs done during the day. Additionally, Massey Automotive can assist with car purchases. You tell them what you want and your budget, and their team will conduct the research, find the vehicle and provide a thorough inspection to insure your satisfaction. “Buying a pre-owned car or truck through us will be the easiest, most stress-free car or truck purchase decision that you will ever make,” says Frederick. Word of mouth has kept Massey Automotive in business for four decades, and it shows in their Yelp and Kudzu reviews. “I have been going to Massey for approximately 2-3 years now and have been blown away by the level of professional customer service they give. Each time thinking there could not possibly be anyone better. Most recently they even went above and beyond when I had a battery problem. Came out to see my car, took care of me, and got everything taken care of. This really is a first class operation, prices are totally fair, and 1000% trust worthy which is so huge when dealing with a mechanic.” – Kudzu Review
Having expert mechanics is also important, and Massey Automotive has been working with the same team for 25 years. To keep up with recent trends and car manufacturers, the Massey team is constantly attending school. They can repair all brands of domestic and foreign cars and can conduct every type of car repair, from simple oil changes to complex diagnostics.
Frederick and Massey Automotive are heavily involved in the local community and do their best to give back. Frederick and his wife of 28 years raised their two children here and support organizations like MUST Ministries and Family Promise. “We’ve grown our business here, raised our family here and are looking forward to many more years working in East Cobb,” says Frederick.
Service also is key to Massey Automotive’s success. They offer Wi-Fi and refreshments in their comfortable customer lounge. As a unique service, they now provide pick-up and delivery car service, which makes it extremely convenient for their customers to get car

MT. BETHEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY CREATES CULTURE OF LOVE AND SUPPORT ss Grace Detling with Jennifer Ethridge, school nurse at MBCA
ss MBCA Kindergartner at chapel service
ss Grace, Marianne and Samantha Detling
Mt. Bethel Christian Academy has been a mainstay of the East Cobb community since 1998. With the recent addition of a high school, MBCA now serves students in grades PK-10th. Ask a Mt. Bethel family what they value about their school and you might hear about the uncompromising, Christ-centered academic environment or the championship athletic programs. But most likely, you’ll hear a story about the people because what sets Mt. Bethel apart is a warm culture of love and support that must be experienced to be fully understood. Hundreds of families could tell their story of what the school has meant to them. The Detling family is among the most recent. East Cobb attorney, Chuck Detling and his wife, Marianne, are blessed with two beautiful daughters, Samantha and Grace. In July 2014, an unlikely accident landed Grace in the emergency room. Eight stitches later, Chuck noticed her pupil was bouncing and asked the doctor back to the room to examine her eye. That examination would lead to weeks of tests and uncertainty. Finally, an MRI would confirm a diagnosis no family could adequately prepare for. Grace had a brain tumor. Given its location in the front of her brain between two optic nerves, the tumor would prove inoperable. The following weeks were filled with seemingly unending doctor appointments, tears and a great deal of prayer. With permission from the Detling’s, a friend shared the heart wrenching news with Grace’s MBCA kindergarten class and immediately, the school community responded. Within hours, meals had been provided, childcare for sister, Samantha, was
arranged and prayers were being offered on Grace’s behalf by dozens of MBCA families. Meals and prayers are surely a welcome comfort in difficult times but the outreach of the Mt. Bethel community would not end there. When the Detling family needed to move from their rental to their new home, the MBCA family stepped up again. Dozens of MBCA families packed boxes and furniture and moved them to their new house. At school, Grace’s first grade teachers took special care to protect her fragile health by continually sanitizing the environment, wiping down desks multiple times a day and reminding students to wash their hands. The school nurse, another invaluable MBCA resource, was the perfect blend of nurture and tough love; recognizing when Grace needed to rest and when she needed to take her math test. The PE teachers had the unfortunate job of telling non-stop, spunky Grace she needed to sit out and watch when doctor’s orders had limited her participation. Collectively, teachers, students, and parents helped Grace be where she wanted to be during her treatment…with her school family. Today, if you ask Marianne how MBCA helped, through tears she will tell you “they prayed without ceasing and provided strength when the weight of uncertainty was overwhelming.” As East Cobb’s only PK-12 preparatory school, Mt. Bethel is an exceptional place for young learners. But perhaps more important, it is an exceptional place for people of all ages, to feel the love and support of Christian community. Stop by soon for a tour and experience it firsthand. But be forewarned, you may not want to leave.

PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE While the public schools in East Cobb County do a good job of providing a quality education, many East Cobb parents seek out “a better fit” for their junior scholars. Finding a quality private school can be a daunting task. As a first step, take a look at our tenth annual list of private schools. Many of these schools will be hosting Open Houses this month, and quite a few have registration deadlines in January or February. So if you are considering private education, now is the time to investigate your options.

PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE
CHOOSING A PRIVATE SCHOOL The reasons cited over and over again by families who send their children to private schools include individual attention, small classes, teacher excellence, and high academic standards. Your decision to consider an independent/private school is just the beginning. While private schools set high standards and emphasize values, they are wonderfully distinct from each other. There are day and boarding schools; coeducational, girls’, and boys’ schools. Enrollment varies from a few dozen to a few thousand students. Some independent schools are progressive, others more traditional in structure. Private schools also serve a varying range of students in terms of abilities and interests. Some schools offer special programs such as intensified instruction in the fine and performing arts, experiential learning projects, or travel abroad seminars. Many schools excel at rigorous intellectual preparation; others are dedicated to average learners; and some specialize in teaching bright students with learning disabilities. Since each of these schools has something unique to offer, ideally you are trying to match a student’s needs with the appropriate school. Write or call the admissions office for published information about a school’s philosophy and programs, and then make an appointment to visit.
20 October 2015
If you haven’t done so already, contact each potential school for information dealing with philosophy, curriculum, extracurricular offerings, admission process, and financing options. Compare each school’s literature with the items on your list; this should give you a preliminary sense of which schools are a good match. Take into account what type of environment would be best for your child and consider his or her individual strengths as you examine each school’s program. The best time to apply is in the fall preceding the academic year of the student’s admission; however, applications are considered throughout the school year. Most schools will require a personal interview, admissions testing, and information from your child’s current school. Ask the individual school for the details of its application procedures and testing dates. In short, choosing the right school for your child is likely the most important single decision you might make in terms of setting the proper path and direction for life. A little preparation and research on the part of parents will go miles toward making the ultimate destination clear at the exit ramp.

EAST COBB PIPELINE PROJECT The Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA) is replacing 6.1 miles of pipe that is more than 50 years old with new, larger pipes that will meet the CCMWA service area’s current and future water needs. A wholesale provider, the Water Authority is the second-largest supplier of drinking water in Georgia. In 2014, CCMWA produced an average of 79.45 million gallons of water per day. These new, larger pipes will make the Authority’s water-supply system more reliable and efficient, which will help keep wholesale rates as low as possible. Construction for the East Cobb Pipeline Project has already begun on Terrell Mill Road, just south of Terrell Mill park. This first section of the project will continue down Terrell Mill to Powers Ferry Road. That is expected to take approximately 8 months, weather permitting. Section 2, which will start in early October, will begin on the west side of Powers Ferry Road and will progress west, mostly along

Terrell Mill Road, to US 41. Section 3 begins at Indian Hills Parkway and Cove Drive, will progress west along Lower Roswell Road and stop where section 1 began. Construction for section 3 will start in spring 2016. The whole project is schedule to be completed by the end of 2017. Drivers can expect lane closures to follow the construction, which is happening within barricaded segments that will stretch more or less from intersection to intersection. When the construction segment moves, the lane closure will move with it. Drivers should expect traffic delays and allow themselves more time to travel in the area. For more information about the project schedule and route maps, please go to www.ccmwa.org or call the project hotline, 770-514-5301. A project ambassador is available at the East Cobb County Government Center twice a week to answer questions: every Tuesday from 8:30am to 12:30pm and every Thursday from 12:30pm to 4:30pm.

The Good Mews kitties are dusting off their polyester suits and getting ready to shake their groove thing at their annual silent/live auction, this year with a disco theme, to be held at The Westside Cultural Arts Center in Midtown Atlanta on Saturday, October 17.
7800 Highway 92 Woodstock, GA 30189 www.cobbevc.com
Happy 22nd Birthday, East Cobber!
Along with dining and disco dancing, the evening will feature a fabulous silent and live auction that has consistently been one of Good Mews’ most successful fundraisers. This event’s success is crucial in enabling them to continue to find forever homes for abandoned and abused cats, as they have done for the thousands who have come through our doors over the past 27 years. The $75 ticket includes great food provided by Glorious Events and two complimentary cocktails (cash bar also available). Disco faves will be spun by Fonix Entertainment! There’s still time to provide an auction item or sponsor the event to highlight your business or service. For more information, contact Good Mews at 770-499-CATS (2287). www.eastcobber.com

Golf: The Atlanta native and legendary golfer, Bobby Jones, once wisely said, “comBrent Goedjen, MD petitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-ahalf inch course… the space between your ears.” It’s also played on a large field of grass in the sun. Tee times in the early morning or late afternoon are great ways to avoid the peak sun intensity between 11 and 3. An initial application with SPF 30+ physical blocking sunscreen (one containing Zinc oxide or Titanium Dioxide) is ideal. This should be combined with a Greg Norman style wide brimmed hat (or baseball cap at a minimum). Reapplication of sunscreen is essential, every 90 minutes is preferred or at the turn as a bare minimum. Tennis: You don’t have to be like the former Georgia Bulldog, John Isner, who played a record 11 hour match at Wimbledon to need sun protective strategies. Most skin types burn within minutes and damage starts right away. All of the same recommendations above apply regarding the sunscreen, hats, sunglasses..etc. One other particular challenge with tennis is perspiration during the match. Look for products containing ‘water resistance’ up to 80 minutes. People hate to use sunscreen on the forehead because it runs in the eyes with sweat. We recommend a visor and water resistant sunscreen below the eyes. And don’t forget to reapply! Running: Choose your routes carefully to maximize shaded areas. Consider SPF rated clothing. Remember sunglasses, particularly with the constant reflection of UV from the road. Long-term exposure to sunlight on the eyes can lead to cataracts.

EAST COBB WOMAN STARTS A CURE IN OUR LIFETIME CHAPTER When Jennifer Fink moved back to Atlanta four years ago and chose the East Cobb area for her home, she brought with her a passion for supporting breast cancer research. Fink had been an active member of a nonprofit group, A Cure in Our Lifetime, in Chappaqua, New York. Fink’s mother is a breast cancer survivor, as well as several of her friends, and her participation in the nonprofit has been her way to honor them. Fast forward to 2015, Fink is now organizing the second chapter of A Cure in Our Lifetime in Atlanta. A Cure in Our Lifetime was founded 18 years ago in Chappaqua in memory of a community friend who passed away at 38, leaving two young children and a husband. Over the years, the homegrown group has raised nearly $3 million for innovative breast cancer research. Since her move to Georgia, Fink has participated in It’s The Journey (2-day walk for breast cancer). However, she wanted to pursue her true passion of honing in on the research aspect for fund raising. So Fink and Atlanta native Jody Goldstein, a friend and breast cancer survivor, began to discuss the possibilities of organizing an Atlanta chapter of A Cure in Our Lifetime.

To get the Atlanta chapter started, Jody and I have collaborated with the New York group to build off of what they have done.” Plans are now underway for the first Atlanta event, thanks for the efforts of a 24-member organization committee. A Cure in Our Lifetime Spring Breakfast will be held at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the Cherokee Town and Country Club at 155 West Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta. Geralyn Lucas, breast cancer survivor and author of Why I Wore Lipstick (to my mastectomy)! and Then Came Life, will be the keynote speaker. If you would like to attend, sponsor or donate to the event, please visit www.atlantacure.org for information. Sponsorships ranging from $250 to $5,000 are available. Individual ticket prices are $125.
“Just in 2015, research estimates that there will be more than 230,000 new cases of breast cancer detected,” says Fink. “Groundbreaking research is critical in helping to find ways to prevent and cure 54 October 2015

UNITED UNDER ONE STEEPLE By Carmen C. Abernathy Bethel the first year, with Due West UMC joining for the 2015 event. “From the beginning, there has been a sense of community, “ says Jana Combs, a Mt. Bethel member who serves on the leadership team. “Each church has taken ownership of a component, such as registration or food service. Then respective church members have volunteered their skills and talents to handle the tasks. It’s been such a blessing to serve with these women of faith.” Eastminster Presbyterian has enjoyed participating in the collaboration, says Leigh Sain, an Eastminster member who also serves on the leadership team. “As a smaller church in the community, we don’t have the capacity to sponsor a conference of this size,” she explains. “So joining with other churches gives us the opportunity to help plan a big event like this one.” ss Rooted Committee: Bottom Row: Ellen Foster, Nicole Taylor, Kelly Brumbeloe, Jana Combs; Second Row: Cathy McCallum, Candy Wilbanks, Jackie Hayes; Third Row: Elaine Crock, Martha Joyce, Leigh Sain, Christy Thomas, and Frieda Brown
Seven churches and three denominations. Women of faith representing each of these have collaborated for the upcoming Rooted Women’s Conference to be held at Mt. Bethel UMC on October 23-24. Conference leadership team members come from four East Cobb churches – East Cobb UMC, Eastminster Presbyterian, Eastside Baptist and Mt. Bethel UMC -- as well as Canton First UMC, Due West UMC and McEachern UMC. Together they have prayed, met, made decisions and then prayed some more about this conference where women will unite with one purpose in mind, which is to glorify God. The upcoming conference is actually the second one in East Cobb. Now known as the Second Annual Rooted Women’s Conference (the first was so popular that it has become an annual event), the meeting features a speaker, worship music, mission focus and lots of fellowship and food. The conference leadership team is praying and planning for 1,000 women to attend this year. The Rooted Women’s Conference got its start through the efforts of Nicole Taylor, Mt. Bethel Director of Women’s Ministry, and Rev. Kelly Brumbeloe, Mt. Bethel Associate Minister. In 2013 they contacted several Cobb County churches to find out if there was interest for an event of this kind. Five churches came on board with Mt.
This year’s Rooted Women’s Conference speaker is Rebekah Lyons, well-known author of several books, including Freefall to Fly: A Breathtaking Journey Toward a Life of Meaning. Nicole Nordeman, worship artist for the event, is a two-time Gospel Music Association winner for Female Vocalist of the Year and the recipient of nine Dove awards. An important aspect of the conference is the emphasis on a local mission, which is 7 Bridges to Recovery. Headquartered in Smyrna, this nonprofit’s ultimate goal is to end homelessness in Atlanta through Christ’s love. 7 Bridges sponsors a home called the Garden that houses 60 women and 40 children who were previously homeless. The group also goes under the bridges and to the streets of Atlanta seeking those in need. Women who reside at the Garden will attend the conference. A portion of the ticket price will be donated to the Garden, as well money collected at the event. Mt Bethel UMC is located at 4385 Lower Roswell Rd., Marietta 30068. The event hours are 7:00-9:00 PM, October 23, and 8:30 AM -12:00 PM, October 24, with lunch afterwards. The ticket cost is $45 (with a $1.35 administrative charge) and can be purchased online at www.mtbethel.org. Serving on the leadership team for a second year, Cathy McCallum from Eastside Baptist, speaks to the camaraderie experienced while planning the conference. “Initially, we walked into a room of strangers, and now we are all friends,” she says. “This a truly a community event to draw women together from different churches and denominations to worship in Christ’s name.”
