PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover

18th Anniversary Issue! 18 years ago, the first issue of the EAST COBBER came off the presses. The premiere issue had all the hallmarks that were to set EAST COBBER apart from other local publications. Since the first edition to this current issue, the paper has focused on the often overlooked individuals, clubs, schools and neighbors that make East Cobb a community we are so proud of. From the front covers that feature East Cobb “regular” residents doing special works to the pages packed with extensive information about East Cobb events and East Cobbers—information you won’t find anywhere else—the EAST COBBER is a monthly reminder of all the good going on right here in our own backyard! Despite the upheaval in the media industry due to economic challenges, the interplay between the printed and digital realms, and shifting media preferences, the EAST COBBER continues to evolve, survive and thrive! Oh, for my “good old days” of a 30-day production schedule for my print magazine. Nowadays, I manage eastcobber.com, oversee 16 blogs with a 24/7 news stream, e-mail a weekly electronic newsletter, push out posts for Facebook (please like us!), run promotional contests, tweet “tweets,” and am about to launch e-deals. All of these activities/services are still rooted in the original mission statement of “building a sense of community in East Cobb County.” EAST COBBER is no longer limited to the printed pages of this magazine. Because I receive so much information and want to do more for MY East Cobb, these new technologies allow me to share more grassroots information with more people which better serves the community. I am also proud of producing the annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival—East Cobb’s only community-wide special event and, after 16 years, a happy hometown tradition. Year after year of promoting East Cobb and presenting stories that may be considered hokey has, I believe, become very relevant and meaningful in these tabloid times. I am flattered when people tell me they think the EAST COBBER is published by a big media company with corporate offices and are taken aback when I tell them I am the founder, editor and publisher of the EAST COBBER. I am proud of the quality publication I create every month (and now the blogs and other social media) and equally proud that I am able to produce it out of my home office right here in East Cobb! I feel fortunate to have created this small business that allows me to use my professional skills, and serve my community. Without the contributions from all of you, dear readers, the EAST COBBER would never have grown, let alone survived! The stories, events and experiences you have shared have made this into a very special publication. Last, but not least, I am grateful for the loyal support of the thousands of businesses that have advertised in and/or been a drop-off point for the EAST COBBER throughout the years. I couldn’t do it with y’all! Keep the stories and ideas coming!

In addition to focusing on fluency in core subjects, training in critical thinking and reasoning skills are also provided, as well as Latin and Logic. Bible is taught at all grade levels and students are encouraged to explore their faith to grow closer to Christ. Beyond its stellar academic program, the Academy provides Fine Arts, servant leadership development, community service projects, clubs, and athletic programs. The competitive athletic program provides championship programs in basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, cheerleading, golf, and tennis. The 44-acre campus features a stateof-the-art academic and athletic building featuring a one-on-one MacBook program, iPod, iPad, iTouch, and iMac labs, a suspended track, rock climbing wall, 15 acres of green space and athletic fields as well an outdoor pond. The Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). Mt. Bethel Christian Academy delivers an exemplary program that produces Christ-centered students who are campus and community leaders. To learn how your student can grow into a leader at the Academy, please visit www.mtbethelchristian.org or contact Rhea Adkin, Director of Admission at 770.971.0245 or via email at rhea.adkins@mtbethel.org . You can read more about Mt. Bethel Christian Academy on page 16, or better yet, come in for a tour. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is located at 4385 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta/East Cobb. Visit their website at www.mtbethelchristian.org.

An exemplary academic program commited to excellence and a desire to help children become all God intends them to be.

The 16th Annual EAST COBBER Parade On Saturday, September 10, East Cobb residents came together under sunny skies to continue an annual hometown tradition: the 16th annual EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. Over 2,000 parade participants representing 110 different groups marched down Johnson Ferry Road to celebrate East Cobb! The parade staged at the Mt. Bethel Elementary School’s parking lot, stepped off at 10am and ended at the Fountains of Olde Towne shopping center at approximately 11:45am. Crowds lined Johnson Ferry Road early to get the best view. “Kids” of all ages enjoyed the floats, decorated dogs, unicycles, four high school marching bands, and vintage cars as they marched down the parade path. East Cobb schools honored their principals and/or their “Teachers-of-the-Year.” The EAST COBBER Parade has earned the nickname, “The Candy Parade,” because just about every entry throws candy to the crowd. Many thanks to Cobb County Police Special Operations Unit and Cobb County Department of Transportation for ensuring the safety of parade participants and parade watchers. The amount of financial support necessary to ensure the success of this annual special event is paramount. We are grateful for the generosity of WellStar, Harry Norman Realtors, and Fountains of Olde Towne/ Equitable Management Company as corporate sponsors. The EAST COBBER Parade & Festival would not be possible without their financial support.

The 16th Annual EAST COBBER Festival Immediately following the EAST COBBER Parade, thousands converged at the Fountains of Olde Towne Shopping Center to enjoy carnival games, food, live entertainment, and exhibits at the EAST COBBER Festival. This hometown tradition proved to be another great opportunity for East Cobb residents to come together, share their pride and have some good old-fashioned fun. Emceed by Mike McCarthy of Big Daddy DJ Service, the Festival stage featured local musicians and young dancers. The EAST COBBER is grateful for the dedication of club members from Pope High School’s Habitat for Humanity who volunteered to help stage the EAST COBBER Parade and work at the EAST COBBER Festival.

Need A Garage Makeover? The Garage Dude Can Help!

Thank You!

To Our Corporate Sponsors:

E

C

If you are like most people, you use your garage as the main storage area for the house. It has become a dumping ground for backpacks, shoes, toys, tools, sports equipment and anything else that doesn’t have a home. Throw in some leaves, spider webs, dead bugs, and greased stain floors and your garage looks like an episode of Hoarders. You cringe every time your neighbors go by your garage and you’re lucky if you can park all your cars in it.

Equitable Management Corporation

Fountains of Olde Towne

Scott Saffran, the owner of The Garage Dude and a resident of East Cobb, came up with the idea of The Garage Dude after years of dealing with a chaotic, dirty garage. As a Business Advisory Council member for Goodwill and an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Scott wanted to incorporate the idea of helping people organize their garages, donating things to charity and implementing storage solutions. “There are so many less fortunate people in our community that can use the things we no longer need, what a great opportunity for us to remove the clutter, donate it to local charities and get a tax deduction at the same time.”

For Your Commitment to Making the EAST COBBER Parade & Festival an annual Hometown Tradition & Rousing Success We also gratefully acknowledge the efforts of the Cobb County Police Department/Special Operations; Mike McCarthy, Big Daddy DJ Service; and Pope High School Habitat for Humanity Chapter, for donating their talents and services. Many thanks to the parade participants, festival entertainers and exhibitors for making this year’s community event so memorable. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

www.eastcobber.com

“The garage is the most overlooked room, but we use it as our main entrance to the house,” says Scott Saffran, “People have beautiful houses and expensive cars, but have ugly, unutilized garages. It’s usually the last place a person sees before they leave the house and the first place they see when they return home.” The Garage Dude offers garage organization, flexible and aesthetically pleasing storage solutions and garage flooring. By totally transforming your garage in as little as one day, The Garage Dude will help you reclaim your living space and revitalize the functionality of your entire home. For more information about how The Garage Dude can help you, visit www.thegaragedude.com or call Scott at 678-637-9680 to arrange a free garage makeover estimate.

Student Teacher Fundraising for Ferst Foundation By Alison Tripp Any kindergarten teacher can tell you that children who have books at home, and who have been read to from an early age, are more prepared for school than children who don’t have age-appropriate books and have not been read to on a regular basis. It is estimated that 61% of low income families have no age-appropriate reading materials for children in the home. Since 1999, the Ferst Foundation has worked to change that. Since then, 2.9 million books have been distributed to 160,000 children. The Ferst Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in Madison, Georgia, by Robin Ferst. Its mission is to “provide books for local communities to prepare all Georgia preschool children for reading and learning success.” By the end of 2008, the Ferst Foundation had donated over 1.2 million books to more than 72,000 Georgia preschoolers since the project began.

reading with children at specific ages, activities and discussions related to the current month’s book, related books and suggested reading list, and crafts, coloring pages, etc., related to the current book. Thanks to the generous donations from our neighbors at the EAST COBBER Parade on September 10th and the patrons of Suburban Tap that night, I was able to raise $443 for this program. Each $36 donation will provide a new book to one child every month for a year--so we were able to sponsor twelve children for next year. I would encourage all of my East Cobb neighbors to go to www.ferstfoundation.org and read more about this awesome program that supports children’s literacy. On the website you will find links where you can donate directly to the foundation and register children under five. Please give your support for this valuable organization.

Families in the participating counties may register any children under 5 years old. There is no limit to the number of children in a household who can register, as long as they are all under the age of 5. There are no income requirements and there is no cost to families ever. Once a child is registered, he/she will receive a new age-appropriate book mailed to his or her home each month until the child’s 5th birthday. The only thing parents are asked to do is read the books with their children. Each book comes with a newsletter for parents that contains tips for working reading into the daily routine, tips for

Illustrator Maurice Sendak Exhibit at East Cobb Library

In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak, a national traveling exhibition which explores the influence of the Old and New worlds in the work of renowned illustrator Maurice Sendak, opened at the East Cobb Library last month, and will remain at the library until October 14. The exhibit is available during regular library hours. Maurice Sendak is best known as the illustrator of more than 100 picture books, including Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. He was born to Polish immigrants in Brooklyn in 1928, and his childhood was typically American in a number of ways. At the same time, he became fascinated as a child with the worn black-and-white photographs of his European relatives, and

the influence of both of these worlds – the threads of Jewish family, geography, and culture – can be seen in his imaginative works. The exhibit is an exploration of Sendak’s illustrations and picture books, revealing connections between these iconic works and Sendak’s childhood, family, and the popular culture of the time. The colorful exhibit panels feature illustrations of ferocious creatures, curious children and vibrant neighborhoods, alongside thematic explorations of the Jewish culture and history – and Sendak’s own family experience – that influenced Sendak’s work. Local support for In a Nushell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak was provided by the Friends of the Cobb County Public Library System.

The Georgia PTA and its local units share a concern for the total health and wellness of all children and youth. During its 100+ year history, PTA has advocated for and promoted many initiatives that support the welfare of children and youth in the home, school and community. That tradition continues here in East Cobb this month with two programs that emphasize different aspects of healthy lifestyle choices: October 5 is USA Walk to School Day, the highlight of International Walk to School Month. This designated event gives children, parents, school teachers and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking. Over the years, millions of walkers from around the world have walked to school together on this day and several of our East Cobb schools will once again participate this year. Not only will students (and parents!) benefit from some early-morning exercise, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time together while walking. You never know what a child might share with you during those precious minutes! Then, during the week of October 23-31, schools will observe Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program. By wearing red ribbons and participating in various anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug-free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena. Special Agent Camarena was an 11-year veteran of the DEA assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico, office where he was on the trail of notorious drug traffickers. In 1985, he was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by these drug traffickers. His tragic death opened the eyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade. Out of that tragedy, a grass-roots effort to educate young people and their parents on these dangers was born. Red ribbons became a symbol of this drug-free commitment and Red Ribbon Week celebrations eventually spread across the country. Our schools and PTAs conduct age-appropriate programs and activities to observe Red Ribbon Week. Please let the young people in your life, whether your child, student, neighbor, relative or acquaintance, know how much you appreciate their choice to live a drug-free life and offer your encouragement and support.

Timber Ridge Elementary School is one of just eight public schools in Georgia to be named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School, the U.S. Department of Education announced. The program honors public and private schools where students achieve at the highest levels, as well as schools that make notable progress in closing the achievement gap. Timber Ridge was honored for scoring in the top 10 percent on state assessments in reading, language arts and mathematics. Principal Dr. Tracie Doe will formally accept the award during an official ceremony Nov. 14-15 in Washington, DC. The Blue Ribbon Schools program began in 1982 as a means of recognizing many of the nation’s most successful schools. Schools that meet award criteria are nominated by state education officials and selected by the U.S. Department of Education. Timber Ridge is the 18th Cobb County school to earn this prestigious designation.

Sprayberry High School Band of Gold Hosts 28 Annual Southern Invitational and Music Festival th

ss Dr. Dan Martin

On October 15, the Sprayberry High School Band of Gold is proudly hosting their 28th Annual Southern Invitational Music Festival at Sprayberry’s Jim Frazier Stadium. The Sprayberry Band is especially excited for this year’s event as the competitors will perform on the stadium’s new turf. The Southern Invitational Music Festival, or SI as it is commonly known, is open to all high school marching bands in the Southeast, providing a non-competitive festival in the morning and an afternoon/evening competition. Trophies are awarded in all classes including the prestigious Dan Martin Award for Music Excellence. For 27 years, bands from throughout Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and North Carolina have come to showcase their marching band field shows. This is a wonderful opportunity for Northeast Cobb residents to experience the best high school bands in the Southeast perform and receive recognition for their achievements. Among the many bands already slated to take part in this year’s invitational is the awardwinning Pope High School Band who will perform in both the festival and competition. “This invitational is important because it was originally organized as a service to music education, not as a fund raiser for our band,” stated Sprayberry Band Director Andy Esserwein. “The festival is also important because it gives young adults a place to be appreciated.” There are four divisions in both the competitive and festival sections of the invitational. Judges for this distinguished event are known for their expertise and ability to be positive with input and evaluation. Bands ranging from 15 to 250 members perform throughout the day and night. The festival begins at 10:00 a.m. with non-competitive performances. During the festival, expert judges evaluate a band’s performance and provide comments and critiques that are used to improve their shows. In the early afternoon the competition portion begins. 14 October 2011

This event concludes with an exhibition performance in the evening by the Band of Gold followed shortly after with the awards ceremony headed by SI Founder and Sprayberry Band Director Emeritus, Mr. Dan Martin. Martin was the acclaimed Sprayberry Band Director for 26 years until he retired in 2001. He established a tradition of music excellence at Sprayberry and created excellent band programs throughout Cobb County. His efforts continue to thrive in the SI festival. Martin maintains his active role at SI each year as the Awards Announcer. To end the evening’s SI festivities, Sprayberry’s 125 member Band of Gold will take the field proudly wearing their new uniforms to perform an exhibition performance of their 2011 field show “Bases Loaded”. The band members and their families volunteer their time to work all aspects of the event giving the invitational a touch of personal pride. Don Hamrick, who co-chairs the Southern Invitational with Mike King, has been involved with Sprayberry Band since 2007, when his son joined the Band of Gold as a trumpet player. His daughter is currently a sophomore mellophone player in the marching band. “The hard work and dedication of our volunteers, both students and parents, is what makes this event one of the premier band events in the southeast,” said Hamrick. “This invitational has been going 27 years and that shows how much people who attend enjoy it. I am just happy to be a part of such a great event.” Tickets can be bought the day of the invitational at the gate and are good for the entire day. An adult ticket is $10, student tickets are $5, and anyone age 6 and under is free. There is a full service concession stand. Souvenirs and programs also available. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Brings Tradition of Academic, Spiritual and Athletic Excellence to East Cobb Families Founded in 1998, East Cobb’s Mt. Bethel Christian Academy has maintained a reputation for excellence for more than a decade. With the addition of Jim R. Callis as head of school in July 2011, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is poised to realize its potential as a world-class institution. An educator for more than 20 years, Callis came to MBCA from St. Paul Christian Academy in Nashville.

“I do this because it’s what God called me to do, and there’s not a day that I’m not reminded of that,” said Callis. “I couldn’t be

happy doing anything else.” But Callis emphasizes that continuing the success of MBCA is not a one-man show. He credits the members of the Board and the exemplary staff for maintaining the highest standards of academic, athletic and spiritual excellence to prepare students for success in the area’s most competitive public, private and applicant-only programs. More than 480 students are enrolled in grades K-8 at MBCA, which admits students of average to above-average ability. One of the greatest advantages of a Mt. Bethel education is small class size – kindergarten classes have only 18 students, grades 1-5 up to 20 and grades six through eight no more than 18. In addition to a classroom teacher, students in K-5 have the added benefit of a full-time teaching assistant in each classroom. All teachers are certified and average 14 years of teaching experience. The majority hold a master’s degree or higher. “The role models we have for our children are unsurpassed,” said Callis, adding that since a teacher is with students eight hours a day over a 170 day school year, they have an immeasurable influence on a child’s development. Callis and his staff strive to challenge students while preparing them comprehensively for the realities of the world they will inherit. One of the hallmarks of a Mt. Bethel education is the integration of technology into the classroom curriculum. In addition to ActivBoards, SmartBoards, and student response systems, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy boasts 8 Mac labs, including iMac, iPad, iPod Touch, and MacBooks. “We strive to prepare children well academically and spiritually, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t also prepare them to leverage technology in the most appropriate and effective ways,” Callis said. “Choosing Mt. Bethel means that a child will be afforded every advantage and every opportunity to reach their fullest 16 October 2011

potential. Partly because of our investment in technology, but more importantly because of our investment in people.” As a non-denomintional faith-based school, MBCA offers a Christ-centered approach that is evident in many areas such as the servant leadership requirement for students. A championship sports program is an important part of the middle school experience and MBCA fields teams in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball. The teams compete in the North Atlanta Metro League and were three time recipients of the NAML cup for the best overall sports program. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy operates on a rolling admission basis. Students must complete admissions testing prior to acceptance. Tours for parents of prospective students are offered every Wednesday at 10am. Parent-only open houses for the 2011-12 school year will be held on November 9, January 18 and January 26 at 10am. Mt. Bethel Christian Academy is located at 4385 Lower Roswell Road in East Cobb, adjacent to Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church. For more information, contact Rhea Adkins, Director of Admission, at 770-9710245 or visit them online at www.mtbethelchristian.org.

In one classroom, several students are engaged in 3D computer modeling. Next door, future chefs are concocting French pastries. And down the hall, designers are creating a jacket for a class project. Where do you find all of these classes under one roof?

Jessica Henley, creator and founder of Henley’s Haven Workshops for Kids and Creative Career Academy, describes her workshops and school as mini art institutes where students can explore their career interests at an early age. She began offering animation classes in 2008 with eight students in attendance. During this past summer, 270 students passed through her doors, gaining knowledge in a host of different disciplines. The Henley’s Haven Workshops for Kids, which currently offers classes each Saturday and during the summer months, is located in Roswell. Here students grades K-12 can sign up for 1½ hour classes for 15 week semesters on Saturdays. During the summer, classes are offered on a weekly basis. Some of the subjects include animation and video game design, app development and web design, fashion design, photography, and digital filmmaking. The success of Henley’s Haven Workshops has led her to start a full-time accredited private school for K-12 located on Briarcliff Rd. in Atlanta. Beginning in August 2011, this nontraditional school called Creative Career Academy allows for the same academic curriculum that students receive in public school. However, Henley’s students pick a “major” in school and can start their life skills training at an early age. Some of the courses offered are animation, video game design, digital filmmaking, IT/computer science, fashion design, culinary arts, acting, and interior design. Because the school schedule has specific days for academic and career courses, students who are home schooled can attend the days when career classes are taught. Henley’s Haven Workshops for Kids is located at 770 Old Roswell Rd., Suite B-2500, Roswell, GA 30076. For more information or to schedule a Saturday class for the upcoming 2012 semester, visit www.henleyworkshops.com or call 678/602-3675. Creative Career Academy is located at 2108 Briarcliff Rd., Atlanta, GA 30329. For more information, visit www.creativecareeracademy.com or call 770/354-6535.

While Fellowship celebrates 25 years of partnering with Christian parents to provide their children a distinctly Christian college-preparatory education, preparing for the next 25 years will be a priority for Fellowship’s fourth headmaster, Dr. Bob Burris. “I am blessed to join an already exceptional school ss Dr. Bob Burris where both the faculty and families are united in wanting the school to grow,” extolls Dr. Burris. “Over the next 18-24 months, we will take time to revisit and update the school’s strategic plan, update the school’s technology, and capitalize on the resource opportunities that will enable us to expand both the school’s fiscal plan and program opportunities. I look forward to working obediently to fulfill God’s vision for Fellowship.” Academically, our 2011 Senior class posted arealeading SAT average scores of 1682. Artistically, our students discover, refine, and sharpen their talent through the passionate guidance of our experienced Art Department faculty. Athletically, 83 percent of our students competed on GHSA sanctioned teams last year. Spiritually, our students are taught from a biblical worldview perspective and live their faith through community service programs, weekly chapel services, and individual projects designed to deepen their faith in Christ. Your family is invited to find your place at Fellowship by visiting us Thursdays at 10 a.m. for a tour or by attending our November 8th (Elementary) and November 9 (Middle & High school) Open House events.

Good Mews Encouraging Adoption of Black Cats With Black-Cat-A-Thon! Please visit Good Mews during the month of October for their annual Black-Cat-AThon! Black cats can be loving and sweet pets if given the chance. In fact, did you know that black cats are considered lucky in Britain, Japan and Australia, among other places? Unfortunately, black cats in the U.S. are often passed over by potential adopters and never given the opportunity to prove how much love they can bring. Sometimes superstition prevents families from ss Lisa Domzalski, Good Mews adopting black cats. Other Animal Foundation times they just aren’t noticed. Whatever the reason, oftentimes black cats stay at the shelter for many months, or even years, longer than their more colorful friends. Please help us change the luck of a black cat at Good Mews by giving her a new and loving home. It will be your lucky day, too. Good Mews will have a reduced adoption fee of $77 and a gift bag for all black cats who are adopted during the month of October. Cat lovers can

take advantage of their 2 for the price of 1 special which is being offered on all cats through the end of the year. Visit www.goodmews.org to view pictures and learn more about some of Good Mews’ black cats. Good Mews also has black kittens who may not be listed on the website. The Good Mews shelter, located at 736 Johnson Ferry Rd. Suite A-3, Marietta, will be open for adoptions between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm every Saturday, the first and third Sunday of the month between the hours of 1 pm and 4 pm, and by appointment. Good Mews Animal Foundation is a local non-profit organization which operates a volunteer based, no-kill shelter for homeless, abused and abandoned cats. The shelter provides a cage-free environment for its residents, offering them comfort and security while assertive adoption programs find them happy, loving homes. They have a strong commitment to the practice of spaying and neutering as the most important step in reducing the pet overpopulation problem. Good Mews also promotes public awareness regarding the value of pets, animal welfare and quality human-animal companionship through educational and outreach programs. To join this growing organization, or to find out more about what you can do to help, call 770-499-CATS (2287) or visit www.goodmews.org.

Classes are 5 weeks, one hour each week. Private lessons are 1 hour according to your schedule. Children are welcome & encouraged to come. Train your dog before the Holidays so the Holidays are fun.

Chicago’s Celebrates its 20th Anniversary 20 years after its inception, Chicago’s Restaurant’s enthusiasm and commitment to the future is just as fresh as on its first day in business. With a long term staff (General Manager Jeanne Wittner has been there 19 years) and a devoted clientele, this family-friendly eatery has become a neighborhood institution. Chicago’s is part of Neighborhood ss David Howard, owner, Dining Group (NDG)—the Chicago’s Restaurnat restaurant management company behind South Carolina’s Charleston gems, McCrady’s and Husk, which have both received glowing accolades from national culinary publications. Chicago’s has been going strong and steady serving its loyal customers for two decades, an accomplishment that brings NDG president David Howard as much pride as any award. “We know all the regulars—some eat at Chicago’s three or four times a week,” says Howard. “We know everyone’s family: the parents, the grandparents, and we’ve watched the kids grow up. Their kids know my kids. We’ve seen a lot of restaurants come and go here and in Atlanta, so 20 years is an amazing accomplishment.” A warm, welcoming atmosphere combined with a crowd-pleasing menu proves to be a winning combination as Chicago’s truly blossomed into a landmark hub of neighborhood camaraderie. They keep their loyal guests happy by consistently serving up fresh and flavorful comfort food. The main attractions are the carefully aged and hand-cut steaks as well as fresh-caught seafood, but the menu—which includes pasta, burgers, and sandwiches—offers options for every appetite. The Slow-Roasted Prime Beef is a signature dish as well as the Cream of Mushroom Soup with pastry crust; Shrimp and Scallops over Angel Hair; Pecan-Crusted Chicken with Sweet Potato puree and Bing Cherry sauce; and Grilled Salmon with fresh Crabmeat have been on the menu for the last 20 years. There is a wide selection of beer and wine plus a carefully crafted cocktails list featuring Chicago’s legendary, ultimate martini. These libations are best enjoyed in the restaurant’s SpeakEasy lounge, which showcases live music every Friday and Saturday night.

East Cobb Woman Creates Permission Lists By Diana Schwartz Permission to live simply; and, three: Permission to grow closer to God,” shares Susan.

ss Susan McMullen

After a nursing career and knowing too well what women give as mothers, sisters, and friends, East Cobber Susan McMullen realized that women need permission to “get”, and step back from doing so much for others. About a year and a half ago she launched www.permissionlist. com. “Permission List is my work to balance the triad: mind, body and spirit. I design cards and jewelry that reflect three basic ideas: one: Permission to be kind to yourself; two:

Susan’s inspiration came at a time when she had a lot going on with her family, career and caring for her mother who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. As her mom’s health deteriorated and Susan worked to balance her roles as caregiver, mother, wife and health professional, Susan struggled to find time for herself. One day at work a colleague told her that she was doing the best that she could and Susan realized that, although she knew that, it was nice to hear those words of support. That bit of inspiration gave rise to the Permission List. Susan packages 52 “permissions,” one for each week of the year, encouraging the recipient to “live simply,” “clear out the clutter,” “tap into your creativity”, or “run your own race.” Selling for $5, each set is shrink wrapped in a card holder tied in a beautiful red organza bag. Susan believes “these are great for giving as gifts or for sitting on your desk, putting one on your refrigerator or mirror, tucking in your pocket or giving one to a friend.” One of Susan’s favorite cards is a simple message: “Give yourself Permission to know you are a gift”. Susan also brings these messages to audiences at women’s business meetings and conferences as a motivational speaker, and has created a jewelry line. Her inspirational cards and jewelry can be found at local stores like Sweet Spirit, The Office Party, Serendipity and Funky Monkey.

It also senses the patient’s foot positions, terrain changes and walking speed, allowing them to walk faster and farther. “It’s another tool we can use for neuromuscular reeducation in patients with foot drop,” said Emily Lanham, physical therapist at WellStar Kennestone Outpatient Rehabilitation Services. “The great thing about it is that it provides stimulation for the muscle and the nerves as the patient walks. It really helps improve functional ability and the quality of the individual’s gait.” Traditional foot drop treatment methods involve the use of a rigid, uncomfortable splint, known as an anklefoot orthosis (AFO), which also calls attention to the patient’s disability. The wireless L300 system, however, is designed to be worn under most clothing and with most shoes. “We are very excited to bring the latest in neuromuscular reeducation technology to WellStar,” said Vimala Nair, M.D., medical director, WellStar Rehabilitation Services. “This major addition exemplifies our System’s deep commitment to providing world-class care for our neurologically-impaired patients. WellStar is one of only four facilities in Atlanta to offer this state-of-the art medical device to patients. ” All WellStar Kennestone Outpatient Rehabilitation Services’ physical therapists are certified in the use of this equipment. A physician’s order is required for therapy. For more information, contact Tanas Ball, manager, WellStar Kennestone Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, at 770-793-7601 or tanas.ball@wellstar.org.

As the days grow shorter in the fall and winter months, now is the perfect time to begin a reparative skin care regimen to correct unfortunate summer sun damage. This process is now easier than ever, because Dermatology Affiliates recently added Cynthia Abbott, M.D. to its practice. Known for their focus on patient care, the physicians at Dermatology Affiliates ss Cynthia Abbott, M. D. see patients for any condition impacting skin, nails or hair. They specialize in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. They also treat acne, psoriasis, eczema and removing warts or moles. Dr. Abbott has always felt at home in two worlds, the world of science and the world of art. It’s part of what draws her to the field of dermatology, where you need both skills to bring out healthy and beautiful skin. “I feel like all my life I have been trying to combine those two,” Dr. Abbott says. “In college I majored in both art and biology. I got my master’s in Medical Illustration and I did a fellowship in Cosmetic Dermatology. I am a very visual person. Any treatment that I do for a patient, I would want to be aesthetically pleasing.” The visual appeal may have been what started Dr. Abbott’s interest in dermatology. But what keeps her going is the variety of people she gets to help. Dr. Abbott also completed an internship in Pediatrics at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. And as such, she feels she has expertise in Pediatric Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology. “What I mostly love about dermatology is the multigenerational factor,” Dr. Abbott says. “I love that I see kids and World War II vets in the same day.” To get the most out of your partnership with your dermatologist, Dr. Abbott recommends understanding your medical needs. “Be educated, know your own medications, and know your medical history,” she says. “I like to work together to treat your diseases and concerns.”

Cobb & Douglas Public Health(CDPH) Immunization Clinic is going mobile in an effort to get annual flu vaccines to the local community. In addition to offering annual flu vaccines to everyone 6 months and older at all Public Health centers, CDPH is also offering them for local businesses and community events for groups of 20 or more people. “We are committed to ensuring everyone is properly protected, so we’re encouraging community members to walk in to one of our many clinic locations. However, we’re also ready and willing to come to any group in Cobb or Douglas county that has 20 or more people who’d like to get immunized,” said Karen Thomas, District Immunization Director, Cobb & Douglas Public Health. This year’s flu vaccine includes protection against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season. The cost of a flu vaccine is $20. Children without health insurance and children with Medicaid PeachCare are eligible for State supplied vaccine for a sliding administration fee. Cash, Visa and MasterCard will also be accepted. Appointments are not required. The health department also recommends pneumonia shots for persons over 65 years old or anyone with a chronic illness or weakened immune system. St. Simons Lighthouse

Over the river and through the marshes to St. Simons Island we go! Part of Georgia’s Golden Isles, the barrier islands of Georgia’s coast, St. Simons Island melds two worlds: the sunny beaches and lollygag pace of island life and the stately Spanish moss-draped grace of the South with antebellum graveyards and ruined plantations. St. Simons, where oak trees turn avenues into tunnels of Spanish-moss draped live oaks, is the hub of the barrier islands, with about 13,000 residents and a bustling strip of restaurants and shops called the Village. For such a small island, there is a vast array of accommodations to choose from– condos , resorts , inns and bed and breakfasts . I wanted my family to stay in a hotel that reflected some of the island’s history, was beachfront, and put us near St. Simons charming shops and attractions. So, we stayed at the The King and Prince Resort. The King and Prince Club opened as a seaside dance club in 1935. Six years later, on July 2, 1941, the main hotel building opened to the public as the King and Prince Hotel. During World War II, the hotel served as a naval coast-watching and training facility, reopening in 1947 to resume its popularity as a favorite island resort with its gracious Mediterranean architecture. The hotel enjoyed extensive renovation and expansions in 1972 and again in 1983, becoming a member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America in 1996. In 2003, the Resort’s cherished core–the historic main building–underwent restoration resulting in 57 new guest room. In 2005, the Resort was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the resort offers 146 rooms and suites and 41 villas. Each is tastefully furnished in traditional English style, with a West Indies flavor. Many rooms offer balconies and/or views of the ocean. Two and three-bedroom beach villas offer a fullequipped kitchen, living and dining room and private balcony or patio. Oceanview rooms provide a king-sized bed or two queen beds and offer a scenic view. Private guesthouses are also available. With three children, we stayed in a two-bedroom villa that faced the ocean. My beachfront villa was just steps from the beach, was beautifully appointed and featured a lovely balcony to chill out on. I was soon relaxing listening to the soothing sounds of crashing Atlantic waves. And, to the delight of my husband the Resort offered an opportunity to play golf at the newly renovated 18-hole King & Prince Golf Course at Hampton Club. Designed by legendary architect Joe Lee, and a short drive off the resort’s property, the golf course is best known for its scenery: dramatic moss-

draped oaks, vast salt marshes, lagoons and lakes that are woven throughout the green. During our short visit, I indulged in a massage at the The Royal Treatment Cottage which operates out of a small converted 3 bedroom bungalow within the resort complex. From formal to casual settings, the resort offers some of the best dining on the island. The Friday Night Seafood Buffet is legendary and should not be missed! Hosted in a phenomenal historic setting, the resort’s oceanfront Delegal Room which is adorned with 11 stained glass window masterpieces depicting scenes of island history, this elaborate buffet dinner is an unforgettable sumptuous feast. You can also satisfy those hunger pangs at the hotel’s Kings Tavern or outdoor Paradise Beach Bar & Grill. There’s even a Starbuck’s onsite! If you can manage to pull yourself away from any one of the 4 resort pools, dazzling sunsets and/or the hypnotizing rhythms of the sea, there’s a storied past waiting to be uncovered. The Resort can help arrange tours or provide walking tour maps of St. Simons Island. Bicycle rental shops are located nearby. Guided trolley tours with entertaining and informative narrative provide an overview of this remarkable little island. There is also a museum highlighting St. Simons coastal heritage located at the base of the centuries-old St. Simons Island Lighthouse. For history fans, the Maritime Center at the old Coast Guard Station on East Beach is open daily with artifacts and photography from its days as an important training base as well as displays of the area’s ecological systems. There’s also the darling independent shops and barbeque and seafood restaurants at “The Village.” Lunch by the pool, fantastic hotel restaurant, well-kept tennis court and pools all added up to great times together for my family. We’d raft (okay, I’d raft, my kids swam) to a sandbar, go for mile walks, jump waves and retire to a well-appointed villa/condo. The King and Prince Resort was a great homebase to create a memorable vacation at St. Simons Island.

Sellars Goodyear Lessons & Tips CHANGING A FLAT TIRE Supplies: Spare Tire, Car jack for your model, Tire air gauge, Lug nut wrench for your model

8-Step Process 1. Wherever your flat occurs, be sure to pull your car as far off the road and on the most level area as possible. Once your car is safely off the road, turn off the engine and turn on the hazard lights. Next, apply the parking break to prevent the car from rolling. Place something such as a rock or wheel block in front of the opposing wheel to prevent rolling. 2. If there is a hubcap on your wheel remove it with the lug nut wrench. 3. Using your lug nut wrench, loosen the lug nuts. Loosen the lug nuts in a star pattern; loosen one lug nut and the one opposite from it until all of the lug nuts are slightly loose. 4. Remove the lug nuts and put them in a safe place so you don’t lose them. 5. Take your tire jack and jack the car up slightly higher than needed to remove the flat tire and put the new one on. Take the new tire, with the air valve facing out, and place it on the wheel studs. 6. Replace the lug nuts by tightening them and make your way around the tire tightening the lug nuts in a star pattern. 7. Carefully lower the car jack then tighten the lug nuts once more and make them as tight as you possibly can. 8. Put the hubcap back on and check the air pressure of your spare with your tire air gauge. If the tire pressure is safe to drive on, jump in your car and you’re on your way.

My828 and The “Jesus” Toenail Clippers by Stephen D. Moon For me, it was love at first sight. Victoria and I met December 3, 1994, as young performing songwriters in a gritty Christian coffeehouse in Louisville, KY. We were engaged three months to the day after our first meeting, and married three months after that. In 2010, we celebrated 15 years of marriage and the birthdays of our three beautiful children, ages 7, 4, and 2. Then, Victoria fainted and suffered a traumatic brain injury November 22, 2010. In addition to deciding whether she lived or died on that date by pursuing emergency surgery, I had the unwelcome task of deciding her fate several times along the way as her doctors suggested that we would never be pleased with the final outcome. They informed me that the removal of life support would provide a quiet, painless death in hospice over the next 10-14 days. Having removed my father from life support in 2005 and watching my mother die in hospice in 2007, I chose a different path for my 41 year-old wife and mother of three. I chose life at each step and wanted to give our children a real chance to continue being raised by the most beautiful, most special, loving mom I had ever seen in action. I put out specific calls for prayer, and we were able to witness true miracles in real-time. Victoria surprisingly survived the initial injury and removal of the breathing tube weeks later. While we were praying for signs of life during an eight-week coma, she began to stir and move her left arm to my verbal commands. We were out of options when the insurance company refused to pay for any more acute care. When faced with sending her to a nursing home to be a vegetable for an undetermined amount of time, several more miracles showed up on our doorstep. The numberone-ranked rehabilitation hospital in the world in Chicago accepted her as a patient, and although we had less than 48 hours, I secured the $63,000 up-front costs for the 21-day program for minimally-conscious patients. She miraculously awoke from the coma five days later.

Prayer of Jabez,” she’d probably want books titled, “My Life is a Total Mess--Where are you God?” On September 22, the 10-month mark along our journey launching a new blog, My828.Org. This blog will be about life, faith, and the struggle for meaning. If you have a messed-up life like me, you may wish to follow or even share your 828. Romans 8:28 promises, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” The one-year mark is a milestone for brain injury patients, so from September 22 through November 22, there is an organized prayer event for one more miracle--that Victoria would recover her memory and cognitive skills. I want her to see what an inspiration she’s been to so many, and that after caring for everyone else for 42 years, that she sees us carrying her for a while. If your life is pictureperfect or if you own a pair of “Jesus” toenail clippers, you might not enjoy my new blog and these new questions, but I know Victoria would. Stephen Moon, 41, is an architect and award-winning performing songwriter based in Marietta, Georgia, who speaks and writes on the subjects of individuals and families in crisis. In 2010, Moon’s wife of 16 years suffered a traumatic brain injury and is still undergoing rehabilitation while he raises the couple’s three small children, ages 8, 4, and 3. Stephen can be contacted at smoon1370@gmail.com.

We have seen two months of coma, five months of rehab, and three months of aftercare in our home. Our family has a wife and mother who doesn’t understand her environment, recognize our home, or remember our names. It certainly feels like we’ve traveled through numerous miracles and now have been left at the station--why bring Victoria through half a dozen miracles to seemingly stop short? It feels like being on the bottom of the ocean in the dark. But back to the gritty coffeehouse full of bikers and homeless people: Victoria and I always liked our witness of faith to be a little dirty, a little ugly, but always real. In one of her brief and odd jobs, Victoria worked at a squeaky clean Christian bookstore. She was disgusted by the silly refrigerator magnets and “Jesus” toenail clippers. They weren’t authentic expressions of faith. Instead of frilly books on “The

Cutting-edge cancer treatment, without cutting. CyberKnife is one of the greatest advances in cancer treatment technology, and WellStar was the first health system in Georgia to have it. CyberKnife has revolutionized cancer care. It’s a precision radiosurgery system that can treat tumors anywhere in the body, including those previously considered untreatable. It beams radiation at your tumor, expertly targeting cancerous cells. And, CyberKnife is completely non-invasive. There’s no surgery, so there’s no incision or scar. Treatment takes just one to five visits. So you’ll be home with your family in no time at all. To learn more, call 770-793-7550 or visit wellstar.org.
