rsary 2015 On Saturday, November 18, 1995, East Cobb residents will have their de very own parade and festival- the EAST v & F e sti COBBER Community Parade and Festival. This is a historic event for East Cobb County and its residents. There has never been a parade of this magnitude in East Cobb County and I don’t think both sides of Johnson Ferry Road have ever been shut down! Accordingly, this edition of the East Cobber commemorates and celebrates this special occasion. All the articles 95 9 1 l a Festiv R E B and information contained herein relates to this very special event. B T CO ss EAS To date, there are 52 groups and 1,000 people signed up to march in the parade; 42 non-profits and small businesses have reserved space to exhibit at the festival, and more than 200 talented individuals/20 acts have been scheduled to perform throughout the day. As you will soon discover, the EAST COBBER lists all the parade participants, festival exhibitors, and corporate sponsors not only to memorialize these “firsts” but also to ensure that parade watchers and festival goers get the most out of this very happy day! After reading through all the people that will be participating in the parade and all the groups exhibiting at the Festival, and after reviewing all the performers scheduled to entertain throughout the day you won’t want to miss this very special day. I don’t want to miss this special day!

It’s important to note that just about everyone involved in this parade is from East Cobb County, Once again, I am grateful for and proud of my fellow East Cobbers from the PTA presidents that lobbied for their school to get involved, to all the different groups and their leaders who stepped forward to be a part of this new event, to all the good citizens and business people who volunteered their valuable time to take on menial tasks. And finally, I might have had the idea, but this special event would not have come to fruition without the local businesses that cared enough to underwrite my dream. During many conversations, I would mention there was going to be a parade right her in East Cobb, and without fail that person would share a memory of a parade when they were growing up or when they lived somewhere else. That’s what November 18 is all about: creating memories- special memories for our children as well as for the child in all of us. The EAST COBBER Community Parade & Festival will be one of those rare moments when we are all reminded that there can be joy in this world and reassured that such caring and talented people are right here in our neighborhood.

Since that letter was written 20 years ago, we’ve since changed the parade to an earlier fall date, we now have 115 parade entries with 2,000+ people signed up to march, and 80 booths reserved at this year’s festival. While it has been a wild ride managing the growth of this hometown tradition, my feelings have not changed. I am so grateful for the many people that come out to help me organize this special event, to WellStar and all the small businesses for providing financial support to make my dream come true. I will never tire of seeing the smiling faces of the kids and teachers alike, waving and throwing candy along the parade route! This happy day reminds me (and I hope, for you) of what a wonderful community East Cobb continues to be after all these years!! de ra a P BER T COB ss EAS 2012 a g rea stagin Cynthia M. On the Cover An East Cobber since 1976, Lyn Ferarra, a volunteer at Atlanta Boxer Rescue (ABR), is pictured with her two rescue boxers, Deke and Missy. You can see Lyn and her rescue dogs marching in this year’s EAST COBBER Parade and/or meet them at Atlanta Boxer Rescue’s booth at the EAST COBBER Festival. “I became involved with ABR because of my love of all dogs-especially Boxers. I reached out to them a few years ago to adopt a rescued Boxer and ended up volunteering. I help evaluate dogs in shelters, help with training issues . . . It's all about saving lives and I help anyway I can,” says Lyn. Atlanta Boxer Rescue is hosting the eighthannual Boxerstock Music Festival on October 11. A $10 ticket gets you access to an entire day of music and family fun from 12 noon to 6pm. All proceeds benefit Atlanta Boxer Rescue. YOU’RE INVITED! JOIN EAST COBB PTAS! HELP US MAKE EVERY CHILD’S POTENTIAL A REALITY By Paty Holdmeyer and Amy Carroll, East Cobb County Council of PTAs, Membership Co-Chairs In the month of August, thousands of parents and students headed back to school. For the majority of students, now is a time filled with excitement as they find out who their new teachers are, catch up with friends and start making new ones. For many parents, apprehension sets in as the unstructured days of summer are over and the hectic school routine is once again upon them. After meeting the teacher and getting the supply list, many parents buy spirit wear and sign up for the PTA. East Cobb has a great PTA support structure. We are lucky that parents are familiar with the PTA and are willing to join year after year. Our new families who move into East Cobb from across the state, the country, or even overseas may not always understand how powerful and important the PTA is for the benefit of each student and school. What is PTA? The National PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer organization in the United States. The purpose of the PTA is to promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school community and place of worship. As an advocate for all children, the PTA works to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. PTAs serve to promote closer relations between the home and the school, so that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children. The PTA mission is to make every child’s potential a reality. In East Cobb there are 35 PTAs, corresponding to each of the 35 public schools, with over 28,000 members. Why join the PTA? Joining the PTA helps make you an advocate for all children at the local, state and national level. The PTA also helps provide many programs that state and county funding do not cover. In many schools, the PTA pays for teacher grants, after school programs, math and reading software, student planning agendas and educational material in school media centers -- among other educational tools that support instructional goals. PTAs enrich the student learning experience and unite our school communities through websites, e-newsletters and the orchestration of events such as math and science nights, fall festivals, picnics, sock hops and holiday parties. 8 September 2015

Why is it important for ALL families to join the PTA? The strength of the PTA lies in its members. These are parents, teachers, school administrators, business leaders, grandparents and community members who believe that making a positive difference in the education of our children matters. Our strength in numbers empowers the PTA to partner with schools to help give each child the best education possible, despite growing limitations, which include manpower and financial resources. Involvement in PTA offers meaningful opportunities to support student academic achievement and wellbeing. Are There Other Benefits to Joining the PTA? Supporting education is important – as is realized by PTA members, including many of our local East Cobb businesses. To help support local PTA membership, many businesses in East Cobb provide discounts or other special values to PTA members. Some of these businesses include tutoring centers, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, a cooking academy, roller skate and ice centers and many more. These business partners understand that East Cobb PTAs and their members have a common goal of helping every child reach their potential. You can access the ECCC PTA business partners here: www.ecccpta.org/ committee-news-info/membership-benefits YOU Are Invited to JOIN PTA! Whether you are a parent, grandparent, neighbor or local business your PTA membership helps us to continue offering all the great programs which make our East Cobb schools award-winning schools. Please think about joining the PTA if you haven’t already. To join any East Cobb PTA, just visit your local school’s website for contact and/or membership information. Thank you for being involved! Paty Holdmeyer is the mother of two children who attend Dickerson Middle School and Walton High School and lives in the Lenox Woods Subdivision. Amy Carroll is the mother of two children who attend Dickerson Middle School and Walton High School and lives in the Indian Hills Subdivision.

There’s a good reason why Jenny Eid loves to come to work each day. Entering East Cobb’s Southern Comforts Consignments store is like touring a Designer Showcase House daily. What’s not to love? From beautiful artwork to furniture to accessories, the store has it all, and it’s all reasonably priced. Being a part of the East Cobb community has been a long time desire for Southern Comforts. With locations in Dunwoody, Roswell and Alpharetta the Market Plaza Shopping Center made perfect sense. According to Jenny, “Each store is different every time you enter the door. We have unique pieces that represent an unlimited number of vendors at any given time.” Jenny is quick to point out that although Southern Comforts does have those beloved antiques for sale, the store’s primary focus is on current styles of furniture and accessories. In addition to items sold by consignors, 20 percent is new merchandise and is purchased from manufacturer closeouts and discounted sales. “We are very picky about what we take on consignment and from manufacturers,” says Jenny.

So how does a consignment store work? If you are interested in displaying your wares at Southern Comforts, there are two ways to handle this. If it’s a smaller item, you simply bring it into the store, with no appointment necessary. A staff member inspects the item on the spot. For larger items, Southern Comforts previews pieces via email at Jenny@SouthernComforts.com. As a consignor, you split the selling price with Southern Comforts 50/50. The store displays each item for four months, with a 10 percent markdown monthly. Jenny says that with fall and the holiday season approaching, it’s a perfect time to update your home décor for those guests you plan to entertain. Stop by Southern Comforts Consignments at 1255 Johnson Ferry Rd., #30, Marietta 30068. Store hours are seven days a week, with Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday, 12-5 p.m. Southern Comforts offers fabulous pricing for savvy shoppers.

HOMEWORK LEADS TO DORSEY ALSTON Eric Gant is no stranger to Atlanta real estate. He has been serving the greater Metro Atlanta area as a residential real estate appraiser for 14 years. As owner of Appreciating Homes Residential Appraisals, Gant had the opportunity over the years to work with the prestigious Buckhead real estate firm Dorsey Alston Realtors. “I had worked with Dorsey Alston many times for high-end properties in and around Buckhead,” explains Gant. “I was always impressed Eric Gant with its management team and agents. After speaking with brokers about the new East Cobb location, I knew it was time to expand my real estate career to include residential sales in addition to appraisals.” Two years later, Gant couldn’t be more pleased with his decision to join Dorsey Alston and expand his business. He has worked with individuals, investors and family estates in buying and selling property in East Cobb, as well as throughout Metro Atlanta. “I believe my extensive appraisal background helps my clients get the best deal possible when buying a property and maximizes their bottom line when they sell a property,” he says. Gant exemplifies Dorsey Alston’s ideology in his commitment to his profession through market knowledge, experience and education. Since his career began in 2001, he has appraised more than 3,000 homes in Metro Atlanta. He has also worked with law firms in litigation for real estate legal disputes, foreclosures and divorces. The Superior Courts of Cobb, Cherokee, DeKalb, Forsyth, Fulton and Gwinnett Counties have designated Gant as a Real Estate Expert Witness. He is a member of the Atlanta Board of Realtors, a Georgia Certified Residential Real Property Appraiser and has completed the course requirements for Home Inspection. Gant received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and his graduate degree from Georgia State University. Eric Gant continues to grow his business through referrals by striving for 100 percent client satisfaction. “I really enjoy working with individual homeowners to develop an estimated market value for their homes,” he says. “This covers pre-listing for sale, tax appeal or family estate planning.” Gant is an active member of his community. He and his wife, Kirsten, have lived in East Cobb for nine years and have four children: Brewer, 9, and triplets, Boone, Greta and Hadley, 6. Big brother and the triplets attend Mt. Bethel Elementary School. Gant has been a soccer coach at NASA, YMCA and Upward Sports. He is a member of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Mt. Bethel Elementary PTA and Princeton Lakes HOA. East Cobber Parade and Festival Celebrates 20 Years of Fun

celebrate all of our great schools,” said Cynthia. The parade is followed by a free community festival which will include entertainment, arts and crafts, concessions, carnival games and local businesses.

The annual EAST COBBER Parade and Festival will be held on Saturday, September 12 starting at 10am. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this communitybuilding tradition, started by EAST COBBER founder and publisher Cynthia Rozzo.

The parade and festival could not happen without the generous support of its sponsors. WellStar Health Systems was an inaugural advertiser with the EAST COBBER and supporting the parade from its inception was a natural extension of that existing relationship. “We have remained a solid partner with the parade because of a shared commitment to the East Cobb community,” said Elaine Morgan, Director, Brand Development and Marketing with WellStar. “Our focus on the health and wellness of East Cobb pairs well with the EAST COBBER’s focus on bringing information to the community,” she continued.

In 1993, Cynthia launched the EAST COBBER magazine with the mission of building a sense of community in the growing East Cobb community. Her focus was, and still remains, the people, special events, schools and businesses that make East Cobb County such a great place to live, work and for so many, to raise a family. Growing up in Ohio, Cynthia fondly remembers her hometown parades, and in 1995, she brought that small town tradition to the residents of East Cobb. “I wanted to bring a sense of ‘place’ to our community, and I wanted to create an event that kids growing up here would remember…I did not have children at the time, but I wanted my future children to experience that smalltown feel, and excitement that a parade and festival provide,” she said. She also wanted to provide a way for the local businesses to introduce themselves to the community in a fun and festive atmosphere.

Elaine has another reason to support the paradeshe grew up in East Cobb. “I have been a resident of East Cobb for 45 years and a WellStar employee since 1993. The marriage of my hometown and my employer is a natural and big reason I can attest to the value of our partnership with the EAST COBBER parade,” said Elaine. Mark your calendars and plan on attending one of East Cobb’s longest standing and revered traditions! The parade starts at Fidelity Bank, 1223 Johnson Ferry Road, and will travel south on Johnson Ferry Road to Olde Towne Parkway. The festival will be at a new site this year, the south parking lot of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, 955 Johnson Ferry Road and will begin immediately after the parade from 11 am - 3 pm.

The community has always embraced the EAST COBBER Parade. In 1995, 1,000 people marched in the parade. This year, more than 2,000 participants are expected, representing more than 110 unique groups with more than 10,000 spectators. The parade is really a tribute to the local schools. “Our principals and Teachers of the Year are the parade’s VIPs. We realize a lot of people move to East Cobb because of the schools, and the parade has always been a unique way to honor and

In the past year, the team members of WellStar East Cobb Health Park have been honored to treat thousands of East Cobbers in need of urgent care as well as those of you visiting your primary care physicians and specialists. When your physician sends you for imaging and labs, it’s just a walk down the hall. And for OrthoSport physical therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, a sleep center, spine center, women’s imaging and retail pharmacy, we’re close to home. Daniel returns to the stage to sing some original songs and well-known classics.

ss Ben Needle a/k/a DJ Neezy

Becoming a DJ was a natural fit for Ben. “Growing up, I was that kid at dances and bar mitzvahs who was on the dance floor as soon as the music was playing and didn’t leave until the end of the party,” he recalled. Ben has been a DJ for four years. “This job has allowed me to merge things I am passionate about: music; dancing and creating lasting memories,” he said.

12:15 – 12:35 PM

SONG OF ATLANTA High energy show. The chorus will sing traditional barbershop tunes and other songs all in 4-part a cappella harmony. 12:40 – 1:10 PM

He provides entertainment for almost any function including private parties, school parties and dances, bar mitzvahs, weddings or any other festive occasions. Ben will tell you that what makes him stand out as a DJ is his dance moves. “I have unbelievable dance moves. They are not the best moves, but they empower the audience to feel comfortable to dance too!” I am able to connect with all ages, and I want to see everyone having a good time,” he said.

AWARD-WINNING SINGER TO OPEN EAST COBBER FESTIVAL On September 12, local singing phenom Daniel Mata will open the EAST COBBER Festival by singing the National Anthem as well as performing a few songs during the festival.

Daniel has enjoyed several accolades in his career. In 2010, he won “Cherokee’s Got Talent,” and in 2014, he won Variety of Georgia’s “Stars of Tomorrow.” He also performed a solo in 2012 and 2013 for the holiday show, “Larry, Carols and Mo,” at the Fox Theatre.

The festival won’t be the first time Daniel has performed the National Anthem. He sang it at his high school graduation (at Lassiter High School this past May) and most recently at Skip Wells’ memorial service. Skip was one of four marines shot and killed in Chattanooga.

Da nie l

Ma ta

One of Daniel’s proudest professional accomplishments thus far has been a concert he put on at the Strand Theatre on Marietta Square. “I prepared a set list of 11 songs, and I also was in charge of promoting the event. The turnout was more than expected, and it gave me confirmation that I wanted to make performing a career,” he said.

Daniel, 19 years old, has lived in Marietta since the age of 8 when his parents and triplet siblings emigrated from Venezuela. He lives in the Hampton Ridge neighborhood, graduated from Lassiter High School this past May and will attend Belmont University.

Daniel recently released his first EP, and future goals include becoming a classical- crossover artist and touring world-wide. When asked to describe himself in five words, he said, “Passionate. Dedicated. Genuine. Smart. Positive.”

A singer his entire life, Daniel was inspired early on by singers Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti as well as Disney tunes. At the age of 10, he began taking professional voice lessons, finessing his classical singing style. Over the years, Daniel has performed at recitals, weddings, art galleries, promotional events and parties. He also has provided his talent to several charitable functions including the 50th Anniversary Celebration of St. Jude’s Hospital and the Arthritis and Ovarian Cancer Balls.

Be sure to come and see East Cobb’s own Daniel Mata perform at the EAST COBBER Festival, Saturday, September 12. Visit www.eastcobber.com/parade for complete details. For more information on Daniel, including a link to purchase his EP, visit www.danielmatamusic.com

LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS RAISING FUNDS FOR EAST COBB PUBLIC SAFETY CELEBRATIONS For the third year in a row, local business leaders are leading efforts to raise funds to underwrite two special events for local Public Safety professionals. The first celebration is to be held this October to thank Precinct 4 police officers for all they do to keep our community safe. This event will coincide with Cobb County Chamber of Commerce’s Public Safety Appreciation Week, and with the support of local businesses, organizations and individuals has now become an annual event. The second event will take place in February 2016 when this volunteer group will host the Cobb County Fire Department’s annual awards banquet.

SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOLER SHINES ON KIDS COOK-OFF SHOW Eleven-year-old East Cobber Juliana Malfitano knows her way around a kitchen. And that comfort level and familiarity with what works are what landed the talented sixth grader on the Food Network’s show featuring talented young chefs from across the country. Malfitano will made her debut as a tough and talented competitor on Rachel Ray’s Kids Cook-off Show which started on Monday, August 24, on the Food Network.

Juliana Malfitano

The show puts the eight junior chefs to the test in front of celebrity guest judges, like the Food Network’s Sunny Anderson, and Alex Guarnaschelli. The kids are competing for a $20,000 culinary scholarship and their own Web series on FoodNetwork.com. All of it is in an effort to make amazing meals that impress chef and host Rachel Ray. Along the way, the young chefs face challenges, obstacles and their own skills as the race to the top to become champion. Malfitano is new to Simpson Middle School but a familiar face at Addison Elementary School. Addison is a “Leader in Me” school, where leadership skills and principles help shape the culture and school environment, in which students are given opportunities to shape their full potential through leadership service and practices. Juliana has her own Facebook page, “Juliana’s Italian Kitchen,” and keeps her skills sharp at her parents Kennesaw restaurant. Dad Chris and mom Carla are thrilled at their daughter’s success, and credit not only exposure to the restaurant business at a young age, but also the Leader in Me curriculum and project- and problem-based learning that is a part of everyday instruction in Cobb schools. 42 September 2015

RELAY FOR LIFE RUACH ATLANTA By Marsha Mathis One person can make a difference - it is true - it is fact. In an effort to raise money for the local American Cancer Society office in Tacoma and to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer Dr. Gordy Klatt spent 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium for a total of more than 83 miles while friends, family and patients watched. Throughout the night people donated $25 each to run or walk the course with him for 30 minutes and the Relay for Life was born. Once again, one person saw the need to make a change and make a difference for our Jewish community in Atlanta. Realizing that many Jewish supporters were restricted from the annual Relay because it was on Shabbat, Sheryl Blechner, Past President of Temple Beth Tikvah in Roswell, with the support and encouragement of Steve Gerson, also a past President of Temple Beth Tikvah and Esther Shultz, a Beth Tikvah member currently on the Relay for Life Ruach Atlanta Steering Committee, approached the American Cancer Society with the idea of a separate relay that, while not faith-based, would consider and respect the needs of those in the Jewish community who could not participate without compromising their religious beliefs. After four months of research and due diligence, it was determined that there was no precedent for this anywhere in the world and thus the Relay for Life Ruach Atlanta was born. Ruach (Spirit) is the very essence of what the relay is about. It is about life, survival and remembrence.

Ms. Blechner approached the American Cancer Society with a three year plan and the Relay is now entering its fourth year! Representatives from Temple Beth Tikvah, Temple Kol Emeth, Congregation Ner Tamid and Congregation Etz Chaim as well as the Roswell community Masjid, schools and organizations are among the participants. This year's event will take place on October 11 from 1pm to dusk, and, in keeping with the integrity of the original, will maintain the key components of the relay which will be an opening ceremony, a Survivor Walk and Survivor Dinner. With a participant goal of 20 teams of 10 and a financial goal of $50,000, the relay was the beginning of a tradition around the world and the tradition continues! Please join with us to help put an end to cancer and celebrate the beginning of more birthdays! Relay for Life Ruach Atlanta will be held at North Springs Charter High School, 7447 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. Visit www.relayforlife.org/ruachga to make a donation or to sign up for a Relay for Life Ruach Atlanta team. Marsha Mathis has lived in East Cobb since 1987. She lives in the Mountain Creek subdivision with her husband, Jim. Her Relay For Life team is Tikvah Troopers from Temple Beth Tikvah.

BRAINCORE THERAPY OFFERS NEW SOLUTION FOR ADHD, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

Dr. Martin and Dr. Linacre

East Cobb

When you have a child diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), many times the main treatment option has been a prescription. BrainCore Therapy of East Cobb now offers an alternative approach that trains the brain to focus without the drugs or its side effects. BrainCore Therapy uses neurofeedback training to teach the brain how to practice normal brain activity.

More than 40 years of research indicate that a healthy, balanced and properly regulated brain will produce the appropriate brain waves at the appropriate times for any given situation. However, when the brain becomes unbalanced, the brain wave patterns become dysregulated. During the neurofeedback training sessions at BrainCore Therapy, the doctors conduct an assessment of the client’s brainwave patterns and then develop a training protocol to retrain the brainwave patterns toward normal. The neurofeedback training sessions are noninvasive, pain free and more importantly, the results are permanent. During the sessions, clients watch a movie or play a video game, all along the neurofeedback training is helping the brain retrain back more to normal activity. BrainCore Therapy can be used to treat ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia and many other neurological-based conditions. “My own son has been diagnosed with ADHD, and neurofeedback has helped him tremendously with his focus issues and short term memory problems, along with many other patients that I have treated at my Buford location. So, I partnered up with Dr. Michael Linacre to provide this service to East Cobb,” explains Daniel Martin, D.C. Drs. Martin and Linacre, D.C., are located at HealthSource of Marietta at 3036 Roswell Rd., Marietta, Ga., 30062. For more information about BrainCore Therapy, call 770-578-0785 or attend one of their monthly workshops. Also, look for their booth at this month’s East Cobber Parade and Festival. HEALTH & WELLNESS

WELLSTAR HOSTS MEDICATION TAKE BACK DAY

Does your home contain expired or unwanted medications that need proper disposal? WellStar is hosting a Medication Take Back Day on September 12 from 10am to 2pm to assist members of the community with that exact problem. >Why is it important to remove old medications from the home? Old prescriptions are often an easy source for abuse and can cause confusion for people taking a large number of medications. For children under four, the medicines commonly ingested include ibuprofen and multivitamins, plus medications for diaper rash and diaper care. For teens, abuse is often with prescription medications that treat mental health conditions or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. >What is Medication Take Back Day? WellStar Health System along with the Cobb County Police Department and Safe Kids of Cobb County will host this program. Residents can bring expired and unwanted medications for safe disposal. Note that typical disposal in the home can lead to accidental poisoning, and flushed medications end up polluting

our waters. Medication Take Back Day protects our children, families and environment. >How are the medications disposed of once they are dropped off? The Cobb County Police will be present to administer a proper transfer of medication. Current federal regulations allow only law enforcement to collect controlled substances. Note that no questions will be asked, and no forms or ID will be required to drop off any medications. >How will the medications be disposed of once they are dropped off? Once a shipment of boxes has accumulated in a secure storage area, the waste medicines are sent to a disposal facility, where they will be destroyed by high temperature incineration. Additional information on this event can be found by calling 770-793-7373. The first 100 vehicles/families at each site will receive a free medicine bottle safety cap. WellStar East Cobb Health Park is located at 3747 Roswell Road in Marietta/EastCobb.

ART FOR THE PARK SUPPORTS ARTISTS AND MCFARLANE NATURE PARK PARTICIPATING ARTISTS AND VENDORSART FOR THE PARK 2015

More than 40 artists are participating in this year’s Art for the Park fundraiser for McFarlane Nature Park. The artists, including painters, fabric artists and jewelry designers will showcase their work at Atlanta Country Club this fall. Lynn Thompson, chairman, Art for the Park, organized the first event three years ago, with support from the Chattahoochee Plantation Women’s Club, as a way to support local artists and raise money for a park that she loves. In this third year, the event has become even more inclusive, adding venders specializing in children’s apparel, toys, books, and dolls, along with the fine arts, jewelry, handbags and designer shoes of past years. “McFarlane Nature Park is sustained solely by private donations. As a long-time resident of Atlanta Country Club subdivision, I have lived adjacent to the park for 26 years,” says Thompson. “It is a true gem in our community.” McFarlane Nature Park is an 11.5 acre park run by The Cobb Land Trust, an all-volunteer organization, since 1992. The park is used for many community events, but the Trust maintains the wishes of the property donors who wanted the land “to be held as a sanctuary of tranquility and a natural green space.” The centerpiece of the park is a 1941 farmhouse constructed by Atlanta attorney Hughes Spalding, Sr. The fundraiser helps support upkeep of the farmhouse in addition to general maintenance of the privately-owned, public park. Art for the Park will take place in the Atlanta Country Club ballroom, 500 Atlanta Country Club Drive, Marietta/ East Cobb, Thursday, October 1, 10:30am-4:30 pm and 6:30-9:30pm, and Friday, October 2, 10:30am-4:30pm. Admission is free. Visit cobblandtrust.org/html/mcfarlane for more details about the park and event. www.eastcobber.com
