PUBLISHER’S NOTE
On November 18, 1995, East Cobb residents came together for the very first EAST COBBER Community Parade and Festival. This marked a historic moment as it was the first event of its kind in East Cobb County. On September 14th, we’ll celebrate the 26th year of this incredible tradition. This year, we’re proud to announce that over 3,000 participants representing 75 local groups will march down Johnson Ferry Road, followed by 55 non-profits and small businesses exhibiting at the festival.
In this issue, you’ll find a full list of parade participants, festival exhibitors, and sponsors (pgs. 12-16) to give you a sneak peek of what the day will bring. After seeing all the amazing people and organizations involved, you won’t want to miss it!
Looking back at the pictures from last year, this joyful day reminds me—and I hope it does for you, too—of the beautiful sense of family and community that continues to thrive in East Cobb.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

A NEW VOICE IN COUNTRY MUSIC FROM EAST COBB
Ava Connell’s debut single and local roots are capturing hearts across
the Southeast
In August, 19-year-old Ava Connell, a Marietta native, dropped her debut single, “One For The Road,” a contemporary country song that is captivating listeners across the Southeast. The track, a story about bittersweet young love and saying goodbye, is already receiving airplay on several iHeartRadio stations, including 105.7, 96.5, and 94.9 The Bull in Atlanta.
Ava’s music features vulnerable lyrics, reminiscent of Taylor Swift, and a tone akin to Miranda Lambert. Her coming-of-age stories and honest acoustic guitar playing strike a chord with people of all ages. Listen to her new single on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
By Marie Muir
Ava’s lyrics reflect life growing up in East Cobb where her passion for music began at a young age. She remembers listening to Sugarland with her grandfather on the way to school and writing poetry with her grandmother, who nurtured her love for storytelling. By the time Ava was 12, she had picked up a guitar and started taking lessons. One of her first public performances at 14, an impressive show at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta, marked the beginning of her music career.
Ava attended East Side Elementary, Dickerson Middle, and Walton High School before finishing her high school degree online, a strategy that allowed her to fully
dedicate herself to her music career and travel frequently to Nashville for live performances.
Ava has continued to make a name for herself with performances at notable venues such as The CocaCola Roxy Theater in Atlanta, Whiskey Jam in Nashville, and Nashville Nights at Boxwood Social Hall in Marietta. Her family and friends cheer her on, providing unwavering support as she chases her dreams.
Ava recently earned a prestigious scholarship to the Jeffrey Steele Academy for her songwriting and had the honor of opening for country music legend Pam Tillis. Her hard work and natural talent have not gone unnoticed. Ava recently earned a nomination for Georgia’s Female Artist of the Year 2024 at The Georgia Country Awards. Her music, which shares the journey from girlhood to womanhood, resonates with listeners through authentic lyrics and dynamic melodies.
Ava’s debut single “One For The Road” was produced by Josh Serrato, known for his work with Koe Wetzel, and recorded at Melody Mountain Studios in Texas. The song also features contributions from Rachel Loy on bass, keys, and background vocals. This fall, Ava will head back to the studio to work on her debut EP.

CELEBRATING EAST COBB PTA’S NATIONAL SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE
By Tammy Andress, President, East Cobb County Council of PTAs
The East Cobb County Council of PTAs (ECCC PTA) supports 35 PTAs in our East Cobb schools. Our PTAs advocate for students and enhance their school’s climate by providing amazing educational experiences for all. PTA volunteers are hard-working and extremely dedicated, and while recognition usually comes from hugs, kisses and thanks from students and staff, we are thrilled to announce that these ECCC PTAs achieved the prestigious “National School of Excellence” status. This remarkable achievement reflects the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of everyone involved.
National PTA honored 319 PTAs across the US and Department of Defense schools in Europe as 2023-2025 National PTA Schools of Excellence for building strong partnerships between families and their school that are enriching the educational experience and overall wellbeing for all students. Of those 319 PTAs being honored, five are PTA’s from right here in East Cobb:
ADDISON ES PTA
HIGHTOWER TRAIL MS PTSA
KEHELEY ES PTA
KINCAID ES PTA
MABRY MS PTSA
It is hard work to earn National PTA School of Excellence status. PTAs undergo a year-long commitment to strengthening family-school partnerships by collecting feedback on PTA priorities from their communities, involving families in decision-making, and implementing plans of action which improve family engagement and enhance EVERY child’s experience. This commitment enhances communication and critical
thinking within schools to make data-driven decisions that yield long-term benefits regarding family engagement.
This accolade is a testament to the dedication of PTA members, the support of staff, and the engagement of the entire community. It celebrates PTAs exceeding the high standards of parent-teacher collaboration, community involvement, and student support, thus enhancing the education experience for all every child.
We are so proud of our ECCC PTAs. They organize countless events, fundraisers, and initiatives to enrich the school environment, improve resources, and create lasting memories for all. The cooperation they foster is inspiring and further demonstrates PTAs are not just auxiliary organizations, but are an indispensable part of their school’s success. It proves that when parents and teachers come together with a shared vision, the possibilities are endless, and the impact on education is profound and positive.
As we applaud the hard work of these PTAs, it is important to remember that we must continue working together, setting higher goals, and striving for continuous improvement, thus ensuring our schools remain places of excellence, where students receive only the best education and support.
Tammy is the President of the East Cobb County Council of PTA’s and the Parliamentary and Membership Chair of the Lassiter PTSA. She is a longtime advocate for public education, is married to Kiffer and is the mother of three daughters, Hannah, Rebekah, and Rachel.
WAIT UNTIL 8TH
Wait Until 8th is a national non-profit organization designed to rally parents together in delaying smartphones until at least the end of 8th grade. More than 65,000 parents have signed the pledge nationwide and the momentum is growing everywhere due in part by the recent success of Jonathan Haidt’s bestselling book, The Anxious Generation. Smartphones have changed childhood for children. What was once childhood based around play has quickly turned into childhood focused around snap chatting, instagramming, and watching You Tube. Parents feel powerless against this wave of growing technology and Wait Until 8th gives them a community of likeminded peers also delaying the smartphone through middle school. Once you sign the pledge and 10 other parents in your child’s grade and school also sign you will be notified via e-mail with those parents’ names and e-mail addresses. This gives parents a way to connect with others who are also waiting.
Within East Cobb, we are building a community called Wait Until 8th East Cobb to help parents along on this path. Last spring, a group of moms from Timber Ridge Elementary led by Jess Wardell decided that they were going to sign the pledge for their children and started sharing it within their school circles. They quickly
garnered an active pledge per grade (10+ signatures) and before long had over 85 signatures at Timber Ridge. Down the road at Mount Bethel Elementary School, I had been following Wait Until 8th online for a few years and was inspired by the success of Timber Ridge. I decided right then to sign the pledge for my own 3 children and to get the movement started at Mount Bethel. Through word of mouth, e-mailing friends, and posting on Facebook groups I was also able to get over 80 pledges in 2 months. I then decided to build this across the entire East Cobb community so that parents in different feeder schools can work together in this movement. As of mid-August, there are now four Wait Until 8th schools in East Cobb and 17 schools with a “liaison” working to get pledges activated.
We look forward to many more parents in East Cobb joining our movement this school year to delay smartphones and to keep educating the community on the reasons to delay. Many parents feel smartphones are a necessity but there are a growing number of basic phone alternatives for talk/text only that parents can purchase. Smartphones can be an academic distraction, impair sleep, increase the risk for anxiety and depression, and increase the risk for cyber bullying among other things. The risk is too great. To learn more and sign the pledge, go to www.waituntil8th.org/ why-wait. Follow us locally @waituntil8th_eastcobb on Instagram.
EAST COBBER LISA CROSSLEY CREATES GIRLSTRONG
In a world filled with challenges and divisions, Lisa Kogel Crossley has taken a stand to unite and inspire women through fashion. Crossley is the visionary CEO and founder of GIRLSTRONG®, a brand dedicated to spreading positivity and empowering women globally.
GIRLSTRONG is an e-commerce brand; a community comprised of women and girls, media and influencers, athletes and beauty queens, moms and daughters and sisters– all connected by the same message: Empowered women empower each other.
GIVING BACK
Crossley remembers as a young girl being picked on by girls who only felt powerful when they were bullying others. “Girls can be so mean to each other!” So, she created a brand with a simple mission: bring women together.
Crossley explains, “As a female founded, funded and operated business, the future of both our company and our community is deeply connected to the empowerment of women and girls.”
GIRLSTRONG has recently partnered with Girls on the Run Georgia, a nonprofit organization that develops essential emotional, social and physical skills in girls, to successfully navigate life experiences.
On October 15, 2024, from 1-3 pm, GIRLSTRONG invites the community to a “Healthy Happy Hour.” The event will be held at Stellar Bodies Buckhead Court (3872 Roswell Road, Ste B2, Atlanta). The reception will feature light bites & drinks, guest speakers & networking opportunities. Event tickets are $35 and guests will receive a swag bag including a GIRLSTRONG T-shirt with net proceeds going to benefit Girls on the Run Georgia.
“We are so pleased to give back to Girls on the Run Georgia,” says Crossley. “The positive impact that their valuable programs have on thousands of girls is a perfect complement to our objective of promoting confidence and empowerment.”
Girls on the Run Georgia was founded in 2000 with just 30 participants and has now served more than 45,000 in Greater Atlanta, North Georgia, Athens, and Golden Isles, building confidence for life.
“Girls on the Run successfully provides programming that inspires thousands of local girls to recognize their inner strength, and increases their level of physical activity and confidence,” says Lea Rolfes, Executive Director, Girls on the Run Georgia. “Like our organization, GIRLSTRONG strives to unlock the power and potential in girls of all ages.”
“We are thrilled to host the GIRLSTRONG event benefitting Girls on the Run Georgia,” says Stellar Bodies Founder Amy Selig. “A Healthy Happy Hour seems to be the perfect kind of reception to merge all of our agencies’ missions: fostering healthy lifestyles for individuals and helping them achieve their wellness goals.”
Whitney Reynolds is the executive producer and host of the nationally syndicated PBS talk show, The Whitney Reynolds Show. Reynolds is on the GIRLSTRONG Advisory Board. Reynolds will be a featured guest speaker at the October 15th event.
GIRLSTRONG® FOUNDER LISA CROSSLEY
Lisa Crossley has a rich background in the beauty, fashion, and entertainment industries. Beyond fashion, Lisa ventured into the movie industry, working in national sales. Originally from NYC, Crossley moved to Florida with her family in the late 70s. She is now living in Georgia with her husband, Steve.
With more than 15 years of experience in the beauty and fashion industry, working for iconic brands like Vera Wang and Calvin Klein, Dior and LVMH, Crossley honed her expertise in brand strategy and innovation. She saw an opportunity to make a difference. She envisioned a brand that women could relate to and connect with; a brand that would bridge the gaps that often divide us.
Taglines on GIRLSTRONG apparel include: “Wear the Power, Feel the Power” “You Can Change the World, Girl!” or simply “GIRLSTRONG.” These messages serve as a reminder to girls of all ages to chase their dreams and reach for the stars.
“When we feel good as WOMEN, the world benefits,” says Crossley. “The lifestyle brand, GIRLSTRONG is all about showing up in our best capacity. Fashion can empower women in many ways, including as a tool for activism and a way to express identity. Every woman deserves to feel strong and confident in every facet of life.” For more information, visit: www.girlstronginc.com.
YOUR NEXT DENTAL VISIT MAY BE A LIFESAVER
What if I told you that a simple check-up isn’t just about keeping your smile looking great—it’s a crucial step in safeguarding your overall health?
Regular dental visits do more than just maintain your teeth; they’re a powerful way to detect potential health issues like oral cancer before they become serious. Think of your dental checkup as an investment in yourself—a chance to stay ahead of health concerns and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with comprehensive, preventive care.
Oral cancer can develop silently, affecting any part of the mouth, including the gums, tongue, lips, and throat. It often starts
as something subtle—an unusual sore, a white or red patch, or persistent discomfort when swallowing. These signs might not always be painful, making them easy to overlook. But with regular check-ups, you’re giving yourself the best chance to catch these early warning signs before they escalate.
Several factors can increase your risk of developing oral cancer. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain HPV infections are major contributors. Even lifestyle choices, like a diet low in fruits and vegetables, excessive sun exposure, or a family history of oral cancer, can play a role. But the good news is, with regular screenings, these
risks can be managed, and your chances of catching any potential problems early are significantly improved.
At our office, oral cancer screenings are a routine part of every dental check-up. We don’t just rely on what the eye can see; we use advanced technology like the VELscope® system. This tool uses blue light to highlight abnormal tissue in the mouth, catching issues that might not be visible to the naked eye. It’s one more way we ensure that your health is our top priority.
If something suspicious is found, we take swift action. A biopsy might be recommended, where a small tissue sample is
examined for cancer cells. From there, we’ll guide you to the right specialists and ensure you have a clear path forward, whatever the diagnosis may be.
But there’s more to your visit than just screenings. Regular dental check-ups are an opportunity to ensure your gums and teeth are in top shape, to address any concerns you might have, and to discuss any cosmetic improvements you’re considering. Whether you’re interested in whitening, veneers, or Invisalign, we’re here to help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.
So why not take this proactive step for your health and your smile? Schedule
your next visit today and let us provide you with comprehensive care that goes beyond the basics. With our advanced screening tools and personalized approach, we’re here to help you maintain your overall health as well as a radiant smile. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The officers and staff of Precinct 4 (Lower Roswell Rd.) are treated to a special night out in the fall with their spouse or significant other, and they enjoy an evening at Olde Towne Athletic Club with dinner, fellowship, and fun!
“We have been honored to plan this special event for the last eleven years, and are confident that our generous community will continue to provide the financial support needed to make this appreciation celebration very meaningful for these special heroes” says Susan Hampton, co-chair of the East Cobb Public Safety Celebrations committee, and a resident of Indian Hills.
Businesses, families, individuals, schools, churches, and civic groups are encouraged to make tax-deductible donations to this worthy cause. See the facing page for details on donation levels and sponsorship opportunities.

REAP THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HIRING A PERSONAL CHEF
Erica Tuggle founded Cookonnect to bring professional chefs into your home, preparing affordable, healthy meals right in your kitchen
By Marie Muir
Erica Tuggle knows firsthand the challenges of balancing a demanding career with a healthy family lifestyle. After growing up in Connecticut and earning degrees from NYU and Harvard in marketing and business, Erica’s career took her from General Mills in Minnesota to a dream job with Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. However, the reality of work and travel left her missing the homemade family dinners she cherished from her own childhood.
A love of food was ingrained in Erica from a young age. Her mother was a from-scratch cook, and Erica’s most valued possession is a cookbook filled with handwritten recipes from her mother, grandmother, and other relatives. Family food traditions made it even harder for Erica to accept the compromises of a busy career.
During the pandemic, Erica decided to pursue a new chapter. She left Coca-Cola and began researching the needs of busy families like hers, realizing that many were struggling to maintain healthy homecooked meals. In 2022 Erica launched Cookonnect, starting with a simple website and some Google forms. She even took on the role of the first Cookonnect chef.
Cookonnect matches families with private chefs who come into their homes to prepare affordable, healthy, and delicious meals. The menu offers a variety of options, with prices competitive with popular food delivery services like DoorDash and Uber Eats. Cookonnect subscribers can customize their meals and schedules, and even request their favorite chef. The menu changes monthly, offering fresh, seasonal dishes. Some fan favorites include Tuscan salmon, turkey meatballs with
spaghetti and roasted zucchini, balsamic marinated flank steak with rice pilaf and honey roasted carrots.
Cookonnect chefs are vetted professionals who undergo a rigorous review process. They handle everything from grocery shopping to cooking and cleanup, spending an average of 2-5 hours in the client’s home. The food is prepared in the customer’s kitchen, with ingredients purchased by the chef at local grocery stores.
For Erica, using Cookonnect herself has been invaluable. Living in Atlanta’s Memorial Park neighborhood with her husband Nathan, their two children, Jordan, 9, and Aria, 6, and their 12-yearold Beagle Jackson, most of the family’s weeks are a whirlwind. Cookonnect has allowed Erica’s family to reclaim precious time together, whether it’s enjoying a leisurely Sunday walk or simply sitting down to a wholesome family dinner.
Cookonnect serves families within a 38-mile radius of Atlanta. For those looking to bring more balance, health, and joy into their homes, Cookonnect might be the answer. As a special offer for East Cobber readers, you can receive $30 off your first meal service with Cookonnect by using the code ECOBB30 at checkout. This offer is for new households only, cannot be combined with any other offers or Trial Meals, and expires on 9/30/24 at 11:59pm. Visit cookonnect.com to learn more.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY
By Ginger Markert-Brusa
66-year-old Lesly Fant found losing 40 pounds easy. Keeping it off is harder. Read on to hear of her journey.
Iam married to my husband of 42 years. We have two sons, two precious daughters-in-law, and four amazing grandchildren. We are blessed they live close.
In 2023, I retired after 45 years as a registered nurse. It was a purposeful career which provided the ability to make a difference in people’s lives. After retiring, I began eating a lot of carbs. I became concerned with the increased weight. I noticed more difficulty in getting off the ground after playing with my grandkids and shortness of breath with exertion. My goal had always been to maintain quality of life as I age.
I looked for help from Jacynta Harb of Sparkle Wellness. Her enthusiasm and ability to motivate is what attracts people to her. I followed Jacynta on Facebook. When she started her business, I saw the success of the Sparkle community. After learning she provided a Zoom option, I joined. I began private coaching with Jacynta, which was the motivation I needed. She has kept me challenged and on track to reach my goals. I lost 40 pounds and 8 inches.
I use an app to monitor my food — including macros like protein, carbs, and fats. I am not as limited as with other weight loss plans. No foods are restricted but, for effective weight loss, sugar and carbs were the first to be monitored. I discovered I feel better and more energetic eating more protein and healthy fats, and limiting simple carbs. Committing to the process was principal. Tracking and meal planning has been key in my success. Small consistent steps each day lead to better habits. Eating well and exercise requires self-discipline. I choose to do the right things daily whether I feel like it or not.
I started strength training with Sparkle Fitness a month into my wellness journey. I started with 1-2 days a week and currently am at 3-4. This was a big change, as I enjoyed walking but had not done any weight training. My body has changed in tone and strength over this year. I love that I can get up and workout in my living room. Alternative moves are provided so everyone feels safe and at their own pace or ability. When I had an issue with hip pain after repeated squats, Jacynta worked with me to find an alternative.
My biggest challenge has come since I lost weight. Through the 1:1 sessions with Jacynta, the motivational
classes, and attending the maintenance meetings, I am learning new strategies for maintaining my weight long term. The Sparkle community provides many great examples of how consistency and continual goal setting leads to a successful maintenance. We walk before meetings, walk 5k’s and a variety of other activities available to connect with others. This supportive group is not just concerned with losing weight, they want to help others flourish. Because of my success, two friends joined Sparkle to improve their health.
When I began this journey, my expectation was to lose weight, but Sparkle has enabled me to do more. This has turned into a journey for overall wellness. I am excited to see where this way of life leads me. I learned eating whole food helps me feel good and weight training translates into physical strength, increased metabolism helping maintain weight, and strengthening my mental health, which is essential for quality of life.
For more information on Sparkle Wellness, visit www.sparkleanewyou.com or call Jacynta Harb at 404-242-5062.
