The Trojans lost seven starters , including three five-year seniors , from last year' s 11-1 un it that averaged 38.6 points and 410yards per game At quarterback Stan Davis , a fifth-year seniorwho has served as an outstanding backup to Kelvin Simmons and Jeremy Rowell during his career , is ready to take centerstage as the starter

Fullback Joe Jackson scored 13 touchdowns last yea r to lead the team and gained 509 yards on 80 carries. At tailback should be Arrid Gregory , who started but split time in the backfield with Ted Yarbrough last year after gaining 556 yards on 76 carries in 1995 for a stunning 7 3 ya rds per carry and seven TD's

Davis' top target at receiver should be Maurice Stringerwho topped the team last year with 27 catches for 283 yards. In the offensive front , left tackle Kerry Jenkins and right guard Scott Childers return as starters and both are pre-season second-team all-Southland Football League selections.

Troy State returns five defensive starters from the 1995 team that allowed just 129 7 yards rushing , 141.6 passing and 13.1 points per game. The Trojans may have the toughest pass rush trio in Division I-AA in ends Pratt Lyons , Stacy Murry and Reggie Lowe

Marcus Spriggs , a 6-3 , 285 pound sophomore transfer from Ohio State , moves well , defeats blocks and could give TSU a boost in the middle of the line next year Dale Watson returns at outside linebacker where he put up numbers of 82 tackles , three sacks and eight tackles for loss

Demetric Shipman and Cliff Shamburger give TSU two good cover corners with returning experience The punter and placekicker positions will be manned by players with little or no e x perience at TSU , although Wes Garne r was the starting punter at Eastern Michigan in 1993 and averaged almost 40 yards per punt.
