Prospectus

Jerry Moore enters his eighth season as head coach at Appalachian State and welcomes 54 lettermen , including 16 starters, for the 1996 campaign

Last season, the Moutaineers were ranked second 13 consecutive weeks and became the first team in Southern Conference history to compile an 8-0-0- league mark. Appy State also became the first Division I school in North Carolina to compile an 11-0-0 record in the modern era

Eleven lettermen , including all five starters, return to the offensive line in 1996 Three of the starting five (center Scott Kadlub , tackle Chad Groover, guard Shawn Clark) were first-team All-Southern Conference selections , while Kadlub and Groover were named to All-American teams.

Damon Scott returns at tailback for ASU after rushing for 1,458 yards and 16 touchdowns A pair of redshirt freshmen, Chris Charles and Luke Manual, and returnee Bake Baker will battle it out for the starting quarterback job.

Otis Smith (27 catches-344 yards) and Kevin Burton (17-190) will be back to head the Mountaineer receivers. Four lettermen, including Jeff Vollmer , who started in all seven of his appearances in '95 , are back at tight end

The defense will be led by a veteran nine-lettermen line and linebacker corps 1995 Buck Buchanan Award inaugural winner Dexter Coakley , a twotime consensus All -American at linebacker , heads these returnees, along · with All-SC linebacker Joe DiBernardo All four starters in the '95 secondary were lost to graduation.

Eastern leads the series, 2-1-0.
