Rebuiding the offensive backfield has been one of the major tasks the SEMO coaching staff has faced since the close of last season

Justin Martini and Travis Blevins will vie for the quarterback slot , while Tony McDonald, Corey Sellars , Corey Williams and Gabe Jenkins are candidates at tailback

Mumford feels the offensive line should be a strength of the 1996 team with three starters returning and guards Justin Landers and Roy Miller recovered from injuries that sidelined them last season Returning starters include AII - OVC cand idate Durand Frierson at center and tackles Scott Davis and Mike Nielsen.

The 1996 SEMO defense will be built around a strong linebacking corps that includes both talent and depth Bobby Haggerty, who tied for the OVC lead last season in tackles with 136 hits, leads this group , along with Sondra Rhodes and Brian Burton , a pre-season All-American last season who was granted a medical redshirt after going down with a knee injury in the second game last fall.

The defensive line will be strengthened by the return of All-Amer ican candidate Angel Rubio , who received a medical redshirt after being injured in the 1995 season opener
