THE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AT
HARVEY DANIEL BRUCE HALL
THOMAS SANDERS, Ph.D. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
"We celebrate the lives that have been and will be changed through H.D. Bruce Hall and the Holy Ground of the callings that will continue to be equipped within its walls. We are grateful to the many who have followed in the Great Teacher's footprints by answering His call to serve through being an educator. My hope is that Dr. Bruce and the generations of Tiger teachers would be proud of this new milestone for the ETBU School of Education."
HISTORY OF
HARVEY DANIEL BRUCE HALL
Harvey D. Bruce Hall was formally dedicated on June 8, 1956. This building was originally home to the president's and vice president's offices, as well as the library. In 2021, University leadership transformed Harvey D. Bruce Hall into an innovative learning and training facility for East Texas Baptist University's School of Education. The modernizing of the building allows faculty to share personal and practical classroom experiences and communicate proven teaching techniques. Within the walls of Harvey D. Bruce Hall, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to make an impact for God's glory within their career callings. As home to the School of Education, Bruce Hall will continue the tradition of equipping servant-hearted teachers and administrators who will share the light of Christ with their students and colleagues impacting generations of young people and their educations.
"Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning." PROVERBS 9:9
THE Dr. Harvey Daniel Bruce became President of the College of Marshall in 1942. He retired as the President of East Texas Baptist College in 1960. President Bruce led the institution's transition to a four-year institution while guiding the school to achieve financial stability in the post-World War II era. Prior to his tenure, Dr. Bruce served as Pastor of First Baptist Church in Midland, Texas. Born and raised in Kentucky, Harvey Bruce completed his baccalaureate degree at Furman University after enlisting and serving in the Army during World War I. In 1928, Bruce and his wife, Merle, moved to Fort Worth so he could pursue graduate work at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. After completing his studies, Dr. Bruce served as the Pastor of First Baptist Churches in Tyler, Glen Rose, Huntsville, and Midland.

HAR Upon VEY arriving in Marshall in 1942, Dr. Bruce immediately began soliciting support to eliminate the institution's debt of $43,000, which he accomplished during the first year of his tenure. President Bruce secured support from the Baptist General Convention of Texas to elevate the College of Marshall to a four-year institution, and in 1944 the institution was formally renamed East Texas Baptist College. In 1945, East Texas Baptist College began awarding its first bachelor's degrees. With the conclusion of World War II, East Texas Baptist College welcomed an influx of students to campus. To accommodate the growing enrollment, President Bruce led a campus expansion initiative, which included the addition of new student housing facilities and additional academic buildings. These expansions included the construction of Scarborough Chapel, Feagin Hall, Sanderson

Academic program offerings continued to grow alongside enrollment under Dr. Bruce's leadership. President Bruce worked diligently to increase the institution’s faculty pool and to elevate faculty credentials. When Dr. Bruce arrived as President in 1942, only four faculty members held master's degrees, while none held a doctorate. By 1959, nearly every faculty member had earned a master's degree, ten held doctorates, and others were actively pursuing doctoral study. In 1958, ETBC received full accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges under Dr. Bruce's presidential leadership.
