ebruary us here and I hope that for many of you, the year has been going well thus far. Some people have experienced some minor hurdles, I’m sure but there are still 11 months left in the year. This is more than ample time to apply yourself to your goal for greater results. The quote from our Zen master above expresses a key through that is very much aligned with this issue of our magazine. That thought is that children are to be nurtured and this nurturing is the responsibility of every generation. Grandparents, having lived a life full of labour, hardship, and possibly health challenges, should be able in old age to experience the unconditional warmth and loving of their grandchildren. This issue of the magazine is all about teaching our children and their parents. Good health is a multi-dimensional factor of life and it is important to begin teaching children the keys to good health early. Proper nutrition is one factor for proper physical development. Exercise is another factor. Love and affection for grandparents and respect for elders is another especially concerning mental health development. As you read each article I encourage you to take the time to consider the point expressed by the author and see the meaning of the message through their eyes. They all have taken a different aspect of teaching children. You have the thoughtful expressions of grandparents, parents, and the youth within these pages. Their messages combined give you a multigenerational view on a vital part of our society, that is, our children. I encourage you to share this magazine with your friends and family members. Your small act of sharing this magazine can have a positive ripple effect that you can’t conceive. There’s a parent out there who just may be waiting for this message. This article will take a look at inexpensive ways to enhance your child’s creativity while fostering self esteem and building family bonds.

In teaching them about their bodies, they were so enthusiastic and excited to learn about their bodies that it led me to search for books about the human body, healthy eating, and food choices. Having kids be proactive in their everyday life makes them strong, independent and more consciously aware of their actions and feelings. Good Health Begins In The Womb By now everyone accepts the fact that what the pregnant mother eats, drinks, breathes or hears gets transmitted to the fetus. Smoking and drinking have been shown to negatively impact the development of the fetus in the womb. Human beings are incredibly curious creatures even in the womb, the baby is alert to any stimuli. One can see this by seeing the baby kick when the father’s voice is heard in the room. This article will help those pregnant mothers and the fathers understand how to foster holistic good health from the womb.
Show Youth The Value of Exercise The Value of Exercise Young people today are losing the knowledge of the value of exercise. Children and youth have video games that occupy much of our time. They also have computers with social media sites like twitter and facebook occupying the rest of their time. How can children and youth begin to gain a love of exercise? The world of unlimited possibilities will unfold when a child learns to use his/ her imagination. When my children were smaller, I didn’t forbid TV, nor did I use it as a babysitter. Observing some households now, the television appears to be a babysitter while mom and dad are working on chores, cooking or cleaning. We purchased art sets, telescopes, blocks, Lego’s, and other items to enhance creativity. I especially enjoyed making nontoxic items like play dough, slimy

This little tike took pictures with my camera at Christmas (he got hold of it before I realized), and they were really good. Scrapbooking is another fun activity. With the pictures these little ones take, let each child have an evolving scrapbook. You can purchase scrapbooks as nice or as inexpensive as you want. The art box can be filled with paper, scissors, buttons, ribbon, non toxic acid free glue, stamps, ink, and other art supplies. You can pick up inexpensive supplies in the “clearance” box every time you visit the arts and crafts store. Having an arts box is essential to promote creativity. Do you allow the children to cook and help with grocery shopping? One way to get children to eat stuff, and homemade silly putty. Not only is it fun to include children in the production of play items, but you can save money, and the children won’t be exposed to harmful chemicals. I think when my children were smaller; one of their favorite items was the “dress-up” box. You can include items like big bow ties, fuzzy boa’s, big costume jewelry, hats, fancy clothes, and well, the possibilities are unlimited. You can find all kinds of inexpensive items for this box at the local thrift store. With the progression of digital cameras, it’s fun to make memories instantly when the kids “dress” up! If you are trying to promote healthy eating with your children, then set parameters for the menu. Allowing the children to make decisions will promote wellness and encourage initiative.
One way to get children to eat healthier is to allow them to help with the menu, shopping, and preparation of the food. My oldest grandson is nine now. When he was much younger, his parents bought him a Nintendo. I discussed this with my son as something I felt needed time controls set, or he would want to play all the time. Time controls were not set. He became totally engrossed with playing games, and this was all he ever wanted to do. This phase lasted for several years. Fortunately, this constant game playing is no longer the case. Caleb has chosen to be creative. He has gone crazy over models and Lego’s. He loves to put together the large Lego sets and models. reads. He is actually using his mind and his imagination. I am so glad he has put aside the constant video game playing. I want you to understand I am not against all the modern technologies. These games and even educational toys have their place. However, nothing replaces the creativity of the mind. Instead of purchasing expensive computer generated phonics and reader systems; why not just read books to your children? Allow their minds to form pictures in their head. Not only will your children gain a love for books and reading; you are fostering family time. I also love to take the children to reading programs at the library. Often the library has great storytellers employed. We always allow time for the children to pick out a book they would like to take home. Children love to build. They don’t even have to build real items. My three year old grandson found my hammer a few days ago. I happened to have some Styrofoam and I allowed him to nail into the Styrofoam. He thought he was doing something really big. He also used the screwdriver. He used real tools. His parents allowed him to use an electric screwdriver the other day. He was supervised, of course. There were some hinges on something they were getting rid of, and they allowed him to take the screws out. This is great for learning hand and eye coordination. They were also building memories with him. Planning day trips for learning and making memories is essential. Not everyone lives close to a zoo, but if you do, buy a family pass, and go frequently. Many towns have educational and science centers for exploration. My favorite of all time is in Columbus, Ohio. COSI (Center of Science and Industry). This place is unbelievable. If you are ever near Columbus, Ohio, United States, this is a must see. As a family, visit parks, aquariums, arboretums, and historic sites. Many of these are free or low cost. Plan your television watching. Obtain the guide for the week, and decide in advance what you

want to watch. By viewing what is playing for the week, you may find great educational shows on stations like the public education channel, as well as movies the entire family will enjoy. Not everything you do as a family has to be a learning opportunity. However, careful planning will ensure you capture those moments you don’t want to miss, and you can leave off those activities you choose to avoid. Planning physical activities as a family are also a great deal of fun. We love to go canoeing. You can ride bikes as a family. Sometimes the

I have enjoyed the Wii for Zumba, exercise, and yoga. This is a great use of this video unit. Nothing is better than the real activity. However, when the snow is high, or the weather is just plain freezing outside, this is a good use of a game player. Taking walks with your children will give them opportunity to explore their senses. When you walk, take time to have your children pay attention to the different sounds, sights, smells, and textures along the way. If you are blessed to have fruit bearing trees or a garden, you can add taste to this experience. Be purposeful with this event. Do not just walk. Use this as a learn12
ing opportunity for teaching your children about being present in the moment and how to be aware. Allow opportunities for your children to communicate to you how they are feeling and what they think about. Their minds are so creative. They also can perceive issues and misunderstand intentions. Allowing time for your children to voice concerns will help keep lines of communication open when they are older. Having spiritual times with your children will foster a sense of reverence and gratitude. We had times set aside for prayer, devotion, and being grateful. My family is Christian, so we had times of reading Bible stories, prayer time, and time to share what we were grateful for. Being well is more than being healthy. Being well uses moving, eating, communicating, being aware, breathing, sensing, work, play, thinking, feeling, Spiritual life, and many more areas of our holistic beings. Raising children to be well is so much more than teaching them to make healthy food choices. Seizing the moment is living in the now. Seize the moments to promote wellness and creativity in your children. Be an active participant. Not only will you foster an environment of wellness, but you will be making memories, and passing on that ability to the next generation. Volume 2 Issue 2 |

et me begin by saying that exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body. In fact, I can go so far as to say that it saves lives. Actually, it saved my life just this past December when I was in British Columbia. I was out there on an army exercise, that is, on a bridge building exercise. Our exercise had several components. One part involved ferrying civilians across a river. Well as fate would have it, one of the civilians accidently fell overboard into the freezing river water. The military personnel all sprang into action. Some were looking for rope and materials to bring the civilian to safety, others were making sure those civilians on board were keeping safe and calm. I noticed that the civilian in the water seemed very much panicked and looked liked he would go under if he didn’t calm down. I instinctively dived into the freezing river to swim over to him. I began to speak to him to calm him down and began to negotiate him back to the ferry with the help of my military colleagues we got him back
to safety and gave him dry overalls for the remainder of the trip. There was none left for me. I was in a bind because I was soaking wet in freezing river water in cold temperatures. This is where military training and exercise saved my life. I knew that I had to get my blood temperature up and keep it up or risk going into hyperthermia shock. I began running laps on the ferry in order to keep my blood circulating and generate internal heat. The civilians saw me running laps and asked my senior officers what I was doing running laps. It was kind of fun to see him calmly explain that right then I was probably freezing and running a risk of hypothermia so my running laps was a way to raise my blood and body

temperature to fight off the cold. The civilians seemed visibly impressed by this. I just kept running laps. Some of the civilians tried to run a few round with me but quickly got tired. I, however, was motivated because I was running for my life and I kept going and going.
W h e n we got to the other side of the river, the civilian whose life I had saved came over and thanked me for saving him. I just told him it was part of the job and I was glad that I could do it. It really felt good to save his life. It gave a bigger meaning to my own life plus it helped me represent the forces in the things we do all the time. We’re on the front lines protecting the way of life that civilians enjoy. How Exercise Saved My Life Firstly, because I was physically fit from the hundreds and hundreds of hours of training being in the army, my body was able to endure jumping into the freezing cold water. Had I been untrained, then the coldness of the freezing water would have overcome me. So my past experience with exercise and keeping my body fit prepared me for that moment in time. Secondly, when I came out of the water I did not have any dry gear to change into. I was wet. Had I simply stood still, I would have no doubt succumbed to the freezing cold on my body. My knowledge gained by my military training along with my physical ability to run laps non-stop allowed me to keep my body from freezing. The exercise saved my life. Is Exercise Important For Youth? Absolutely! I would have been a goner without a properly trained physically fit body. More importantly, I would not have been

able to give someone the ultimate gift of a second chance at life. Parents need to pay attention. Our youth today need to get more active. Those expensive video games, computers games, and social internet sites like facebook and twitter and all the other distractions take away time that could be spent on physical development. Exercise has Numerous Benefits for Youth The benefits of a good cardiovascular system, stronger bones, healthier breathing, more self confidence, more muscle development plus the protection again becoming overweight are all good reasons to exercise. Parents, you need to be firm in nudging your children into exercise. But you also need to use wisdom in getting the involved in something that they will eventually like. Also, if you’re a parent couch potato then don’t expect to your children to exercise if you won’t. You need to lead by example in some cases. Here are my tips for parents and youth to become more active: 1. Paintball: You need to have the right gear for safety but why sit in front of a stupid computer when a bunch of youths and parents could be out shooting each other with paint. It’s fun, interactive and if you do more running exercise. 2. Indoor Rock Climbing: Now that’s a exercise sport right there. Just think Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2 but indoors with a safety harness. It can be fun and it works the arms, legs and mind as the climber tries to find the best way to 36
go up. 3. Running or Jogging: We do a lot of jogging and marching and running in the military. The best part of this is that it is a free exercise. Parents and their children can do this together. Perhaps have a prize as a motivation (not an unhealthy prize) to keep it interesting. 4. Parkour: Sometimes this is also known as Yamakazi but that was the movie about the sport. This is a very complex sport which requires alignment of mind and body for precision movements. Not for the faint of heart or the beginner but this can definitely be fun. You’ve seen parkour moves in video games like Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed where characters climb up buildings. You’ve even seen it in the James Bond movie Casino Royale. It can be done anywhere. That’s the beauty of it. All terrains become your parkour field. As a side note, the British Royal Marines hired parkour athletes to train their members. There is an effort underway to introduce this Bryan Berkeley is a corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces. He is a youth leader, an actor, speaker, and motivator, and he’s not even 20 years old yet. Bryan has lectured to youths and their parents on what it takes to be a student leader and how young people envision leadership differently from adults. In closing, I’d just like to remind parents and youth to make exercise and sports fun. Your body can do amazing things with proper training and the right sport is out there for you. Just find it. Traditional pasta is a generic term for foods made from an unleavened dough of wheat or buckwheat flour and water, sometimes with other ingredients such as eggs and vegetable extracts. While pasta is traditionally considered as being linked to Italy, the oldest known pasta or noodle food has its origin in the Qinghai province of China. This pasta or noodle dates back to 4000 years ago and the noodles appear to have been made from foxtail millet and broomcorn millet. In China, noodles of wheat, millet or rice have been eaten for many thousand years. Jenny’s Raw Pasta Fiesta has none of the traditional “cooked” pasta ingredients. Preparation Level: Intermediate Category: Meal Equipment Required: Spiral slicer, Knife, Vitamix Blender Ingredients 4 carrots peeled 4 zucchini 1/2 Tbsp sea salt 2 Tbsp Italian seasoning 2 cups of cherry tomatoes ( cut into halves) 10 basil leaves cut chiffonade Garnish with basil or parsley leaves
unCheese Sauce 3/4 cup Macadamias nuts 3/4 cup Cashew 1 Tbsp nama shoyu or tamari 2 Tbsp lemon juice 1/4 cup water 2 Tbsp Nutritional yeast 1 sweet red bell pepper 1 Tbsp agave nectar
To make the pasta: Use the spiral slicer to create your carrot and zucchini pasta-like spaghetti noodles. Transfer into a bowl and mix the sea salt, Italian seasoning, cherry tomatoes and basil leaves. Let this sit for a few minutes while you make the uncheese sauce. To make the uncheese sauce: Place all the uncheese sauce ingredients into your Vitamix blender. Blend on high speed for a few minutes until creamy. Pour the uncheese sauce over the pasta and mix it well. Garnish with parsley or basil leaves on the top Note: This raw pasta version is very light and refreshing as compare to traditional Italian pasta which is loaded too much and feels heavy after you have eaten the meal. Style Tip: If you want to get a restaurant style look before serving, you can get a cake ring mold and set it a plate. Place 2 big scoops of the raw pasta into the round ring mold. Then gently remove it so you get a pasta “tower� style. Drizzle some of the uncheese sauce on the tower and around the edge of the plate. The look will impress your guest and it taste delicious. Inspiration: Barb Guerra
T
his issue of the magazine is about teaching our children and parents. With our focus being on children and families, I simply could not pass up this opportunity to mention this very special mother. So Barb is our first time, 2nd inspirational story in a single issue. She’s truly a special person and deserves mention and support. Barb is almost like any other mother of two boys. However, she was featured on Ripley’s Believe it Or Not for her special ability. She was also featured on Medical Incredible. She is a model, a working mother of two, a professional body building athlete, and a online business owner. She’s already showing signs of being an extraordinary woman but what makes this ex-single mom so incredible? What is it about her that compelled us to chose her to be one of our inspiration stories? Barb has no arms. She uses her legs and feet to cook, eat, drive her car, and even to change her son’s diapers when he was a baby. Volume 2 Issue 2 |

her feet to give a recital at church for 300 people. When she finished Chariots of Fire, the audience was standing and tears were flowing. Other children would make fun of her and she was very self conscious of her lack of arms but there were a few good friends who liked her for who she was. Her teenage years were rough but that changed in college. As Barb says, “I finally decided to quit worrying about everyone else and just do what I’ve gotta do. Besides why did it matter what they thought anyway? I became a much happier person. I actually started to like who I am. I became much more out-going, much more confident.
