Chemicals of Concern
Endocrine disrupters are chemicals that interfere with normal hormone action. Hormones and their pathways are critical to the normal functioning of every tissue and organ in the body. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, interfere with this process. The WHO report concluded that, “There is emerging evidence for adverse reproductive outcomes from exposure to EDCs, and there is mounting evidence for effects of the chemicals on thyroid function, brain function, obesity and metabolism, and insulin and glucose homeostasis.”

So what can we do about it? The one area that we CAN control is our homes—there are many changes we can make to reduce our exposure to chemicals inside the home and make it a safe haven.

Over 2 years ago, a team of 16 scientists from 10 nations released a decade-long research report on the global evidence of health hazards from a particular class of chemicals called endocrine- disrupting chemicals. (Ref. 2012 WHO report, State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals) 10

Children are among the most vulnerable to damage from EDCs. EDC exposure has been linked to increased rates of neurobehavioral disorders, including dyslexia, ADHD and autism. The prevalence of pediatric asthma has

more than doubled over the past 20 years and is now the leading cause of child hospitalizations and school absenteeism. It has been estimated that as much as 24% of human diseases and disorders are at least in part due to environmental factors.
Exposure to EDCs during development- in utero, infancy, early childhood through puberty— can have permanent effects if the exposure takes place when a specific tissue is developing. According to the report, “EDCs have the capacity to interfere with tissue and organ development and function, and therefore they may alter susceptibility to different types of diseases throughout life. And the disease risk due to EDCs may be significantly underestimated due to their combined effect.” This is a global threat that needs global action.
