Is recycled polyester the answer 回收聚酯是解 决之道吗
It’s a big challenge facing designers who want to use sustainable fabrics into their collections to sift through fact and fiction about which fibers are actually eco-friendly, and there are environmental pros and cons to every fiber, whether natural (cotton, silk, wool), manufactured (derived from naturally occurring cellulose or protein like rayon, bamboo, hemp, soy) or synthetic (made from chemicals). When consumers look for garments labeled as organic or sustainable, it is important to know which step of your garment’s lifecycle is being rated. Knowing what chemical processes (especially how the chemicals were disposed) are involved from the raw fiber stage to a finished knitted or woven fabric ready for dyeing is often the most frustrating and least transparent step of garment creation. On the synthetic side, the process is at least more transparent. Annual PET production requires an astonishing 104 million barrels of oil! About 60% of that, or 70 million barrels, is used to make polyester fiber for textiles. The rest is mainly used to make bottles. When you recycle a PET bottle he melted resin contains contaminates that prevent it from being ‘food grade’ again, so it gets ‘downgraded’ into a secondary product, such as yarn. This is how recycled polyester (rPET) has come on the market

So how does a water bottle become fabric?? After a PET #1 bottle hits a recycling bin, bottles are sorted at a recycling center and then brought to a PET reclaiming facility. The bottles are cleaned, tops and labels removed and the bottles are sorted by color. Bottles are put into a grinder to make small flakes, then tossed in hot air to give them a hard coating. It’s at this stage that a carcinogenic chemical present in all PET, antimony, is released into the air. The flakes are then melted
into a thick liquid and filtered through a plate with 68 tiny holes than form filaments five times finer than human hair. The filaments harden and are spooled on hot rollers to stretch and realign the polyester molecules. The yarn is now ready to be woven or knitted into polyester garments. Despite all of that, what makes rPET qualify as a sustainable fiber is that this process uses 2/3 less energy, no new petroleum, and close to 90% less water that the original PET. And a rPET shirt uses up about 5 bottles that would otherwise go to landfill.
KNOW YOUR ECO FABRICS Hemp, soy and bamboo start off from renewable sources, are naturally pest-resistant and require little water to grow. However, to process into yarn they all require a significant amount of energy, water and chemicals. Organic cotton is grown from non-genetically modified seeds without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, using crop rotation farming practices, and is usually cultivated by hand. However the water, energy and chemical inputs of this fabric are again still environmentally impactful.

Learn about what’s in the bottle and not only judge a product by design. There are now many green alternatives to traditional petrochemical based cleaning agents that are less harsh and as effective. The most commonly used surfactant being SLS, SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate), APG etc. Look out for the big NO NOs and make sure your personal care does NOT contain parabens, EDTA, ammonia or artificial dyes and perfume. This is because many studies have shown them to be harmful, carcinogenic and allergy causing.

公平贸易常见问题 Fair trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest and weakest producers. Why you should buy fair trade products? Shopping fair trade products is that you know the people who produced your goods were paid a fair wage and that their environment is being managed in a sustainable way so that they can continue their production. You can show your respect to producers in developing world through buying fair trade products Do fair trade products guarantee the best deal in consumers’ rights? Fair trade guarantees no exploitation to producers in the production chain. However, fair trade does not monitor the entire supply chain to the end consumers. It is also important to note that the on-the-shelf price is set by retailers, not by Fair trade. Is certification essential for a products claiming to be fair trade? It depends on the trust level of consumers to the brand. Many businesses do not have enough resources to apply for certification and would rather bridge the communication between producers and consumers directly. The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and Fairtrade International (FLO) are two major reputable third party Fair Trade Certification organisations. Both have their unique criteria and standards for members and licensees to follow. They are both ISEAL members and consumers should be worry-free to their monitoring and governance.

It it really mold? If on a nonporous surface, carefully wipe it away and see if it returns. Find and stop the water source, which mold needs to grow. Sources: high humidity, broken pipes in the wall, or water entering from outside. Address leaks immediately. You have a 48 hr window to dry up before mold attacks. Don’t leave children exposed, since this can lead to the development of lifelong mold allergies. Get allergy tested to know if you are sensitive. Use as little water as possible when cleaning. A HEPA filterequipped vacuum is much better. Prevent cross-contamination to other rooms by sealing the room and using an air filter turned on high during cleaning. Once clean, keep the area dry. Indoor relative humidity should be 30-55%. Shanghai is rarely dry enough to justify using humidifiers. Do not allow your landlord to paint over the mold. Mold continues to live underneath and will quickly return. If all else fails, call the professionals. Mold that is greater than 1m2, where materials are water-damaged, or where mold is not visible are difficult projects and potentially risky to tackle yourself.
