Dr. Jeff WILLIAMS Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration. Williams emerged as a leader within athletic administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletic experience with the next generation of athletic administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become one of ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009. Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.

Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices. “I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our Tigers to earn their degree while having a great experience as a student-athlete. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!” Both Williams and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9. “Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”

Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

KERR ACTIVITIES CENTER: HOME OF THE TIGERS

ECU’s Robert S. Kerr Activities Center is one of the top basketball facilities in the region.

Built in 1974, the golden geodesic dome has been a landmark for ECU. The 50,000 square-foot structure will comfortably seat over 2,700 people. The three-level center, built on a hillside, also houses classrooms, coaches’ offices and reception areas. In addition to serving as the home for the ECU men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team, Kerr Activities Center is also used for graduation ceremonies, special community events, concerts, high school basketball tournaments and intramurals. The lobby of the Kerr Activities Center recently received a facelift, with the addition of the History of East Central University men’s basketball wall. The display takes a chronological look at the success of ECU men’s basketball from 1927 to the present. Featured are team photos of conference champions and national qualifying teams, along with past All-Americans and allconference selections. The wall was designed by Taylor 3D. Those making donations toward the display were: Ryan Eaves, Phil Johnson, Jim Kemp, Chuck Liston, Tommy Quaid, Terry Ringenberg, Terry Shannon, Gerald Williamson and Jim Wooldridge.

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM

The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a handson environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes. The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Activities Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams. The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

There are also athletic training facilities located in the Elvan George Locker Room for football and in the Women’s Athletic Complex for soccer and softball.

Ja HAVENS Head Coach

15-12 (2nd Season at ECU) 15-12 (2nd Season) Ja Havens became the seventh head coach for the East Central University men’s basketball team in April 2013. Havens came back to his roots in the Oklahoma basketball community after spending his playing career at St. Gregory’s and Northeastern State and the first seven of his 15 years in collegiate coaching in Oklahoma. In his first season at the helm of the Tigers’ program, Havens made an immediate impact, helping the team have one of the more successful seasons since 2002-03 when they made their last trip to the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Tigers finished 15-12 overall, their first winning season since 2007-08, improving from an 8-18 mark in 2012-13. ECU was also the first team to earn a spot in the 2013-14 Great American Conference Tournament, after being the only team to not advance to the tournament in the first two seasons of the conference. The Tigers fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion (Harding). There were several other key moments for the Tigers over the course of the season, like being the first team from the GAC to win the unwinnable road trip to Harding and Arkansas Tech since the start of the conference in 2011-12. ECU also saw two players earn All-GAC honors in senior Colby Carr (2nd Team) and Brandon Lucas (Honorable Mention) and then senior Henry Pwono was named to the GAC All-Tournament Team after recording 27 points in just one game. Pwono also lead the entire returning group of student-athletes with an increase of their athletic accomplishments on the court. While every player made improvements, Pwono doubled his point production and increased his rebounding average by two rebounds per game. However, the improvement that Havens and the rest of the athletic department is most proud of is the perception of the team based on their off the court accomplishments. The team made improvements in the classroom and also increased their commitment of community service. “For me and my staff, the number one thing that we wanted to do in the first season was to establish a culture of excellence that carried over to all aspects of the program including academics, being involved in the community and obviously competing and being successful on the court,” Havens commented. The Tigers participated in several community service projects throughout the school year, with an emphasis on youth events to help the next generation of students learn positive skills for leadership and scholastic achievement.

2014-15 TIGER MEN’S BASKETBALL

Havens spent eight years as the assistant basketball coach at Drury University, which claimed the 2013 NCAA DII National Championship. He helped the Panthers to five Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division Championships and two tournament championships. Drury had great success in the NCAA, advancing to the NCAA DII Tournament six times and going 173-68 in the eight years he spent with the program. Before moving to Drury, he spent four seasons at the University of Tulsa as an assistant coach and director of basketball operations. The Golden Hurricane earned two Western Athletic Conference championships during his tenure and advanced to the second round of the NCAA DI Tournament. From 1999-2001, Havens was a graduate assistant coach at Northeastern State, when NSU claimed two straight Lone Star Conference North Division Championships and advanced to the regional semifinals of the NCAA DII tournament. Havens started his coaching career at St. Gregory’s in 1998 and helped the team improve from a six-win season in 1997-98 to 14 in 1998-99. Before starting his coaching career, Havens played for two seasons at Northeastern State (1996-98) and was named to the LSC All-Academic Team. He spent his first two seasons at St. Gregory’s (1994-96) and was named a NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-American. Havens has had a hand in every aspect of college basketball coaching; including scouting, recruitment, on-floor coaching, academic progress, scheduling, public relations and community service. Academic accountability and community service are key areas for the student-athletes that Havens coaches. Havens has strong family roots in central Oklahoma, as his family still lives in Shawnee, Okla. The Oklahoma native has built strong ties in the Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri coaching communities. Havens was exposed to basketball at a very early age, as his father is legendary coach Jerry Havens. Jerry has been a coach for 38 years and has been inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Havens grew up in Stillwater, Okla. and attended high school in Lewisville, Texas, so Texoma has been a key recruiting area throughout his coaching career. Havens’ wife Angie is an occupational therapist, who also played at St. Gregory’s and Northeastern State. Both had the opportunity during their collegiate careers to play in the Kerr Activities Center. The couple has three sons: Trey (13), Trent (7) and Ty (2) and one daughter, Tatum (11).

Aaron HILL Assistant 1st Season

Aaron Hill joined the Tigers’ men’s basketball staff for the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach. Hill spent two seasons at Eastern Arizona College as an assistant coach. While with the Gila Monsters, he helped the team to 39 victories in two seasons, including multiple wins over nationally ranked teams in the NJCAA. At EAC, he assisted with recruiting, creating strength & conditioning programs, scouting and working with post and perimeter players. The program produced five all-conference and three all-region players as well as a conference freshman and player of the year and a two-time all-American. A two-time Missouri All-State and Mr. Basketball Finalist himself, Hill has also coached at the high school level as an assistant at Quincy High School in Illinois from 2010-12. In his final season, the team claimed the Western Big Six Conference Championship and finished 20-7 in 4A. Hill spent four seasons at Rockhurst University where he ended his time with the Hawks at No. 5 on the school’s career scoring list. The two-time All-American and Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year also set school records for three-point field goals made in a season and career. Hill was also a two-time GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned two Capital One Academic All-America honors. After college, Hill moved on to play professionally in Australia for the Ringwood Hawks for one season. In 2011, he was selected as a BigV League All-Star and was among the league’s leaders in scoring, three-point shooting and steals. The Canton, Mo., native earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2008 and a master’s degree in business administration from Rockhurst in 2010. Hill is married to the former Andrea Knapp.

LEADERSHIP KEY TO TIGERS SUCCESS IN 2014-15 The East Central University men’s basketball team had the best turnaround in the Great American Conference from 2012-13 to 2013-14 and will be looking to build on that success heading into the 2014-15 season under second-year head coach Ja Havens. In his first season at the helm of the Tigers’ program, Havens made an immediate impact, helping the team have one of the more successful seasons since 2002-03 when they made their last trip to the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Tigers finished 15-12 overall, their first winning season since 2007-08, improving from an 8-18 mark in 201213. ECU was also the first team to earn a spot in the 2013-14 GAC Tournament, after being the only team to not advance to the tournament in the first two seasons of the conference. The Tigers fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion (Harding). From that team ECU returns seven letterwinners and three starters, including senior forwards Brandon Lucas and Henry Pwono. Lucas, who was named to the All-GAC Honorable Mention Team, averaged 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Tigers. “Brandon Lucas is a versatile player and we are looking for him to take the next step and become a consistent scorer and rebounder for us this year,” Havens commented. Pwono added 11.9 points and 6.6 boards per game. The GAC AllTournament Team pick doubled his point production and increased his rebounding average by two rebounds per game from a season ago. “Henry Pwono is a focal point of our offense with his ability to score,” added Havens. “We are happy to have him back on the roster this season, especially since he has worked hard to continue to improve.” The Tigers also return redshirt sophomore Braxton Reeves, sophomore Aly Hudgins and junior Jefferson Ocoro at the forward position. Reeves sat out the 2013-14 season due to injury, but contributed 4.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per outing in 2012-13. Hudgins, a guard/forward, netted 4.9 points and 4.0 boards per game for ECU in his first season. Ocoro played in 24 games in his first season in an orange and black uniform and tallied 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. “Braxton, Aly and Jefferson all bring great energy to the floor,” said Havens. “We are expecting to see strong contributions from all three on both sides of the court.” The Tigers will have three more forwards on the roster for the season, but freshmen Robert Johnson, Jacob Essman and David Forbes are all expected to redshirt and gain valuable experience in the ECU system before hitting the court next season. The Tigers deepest position will be at guard this season, with the competition for playing time expected to help the output on the court. ECU returns sophomore A.J. Moutry, who averaged 10.7 points per game and shot .409 (99-242) from the floor and .365 (62-170) from beyond the arc. Also returning at the guard spot are junior Marquis Walters and junior Nick Anderson. The Tigers will also benefit from the addition of redshirt freshman Darryn York, redshirt sophomore Donovan Halsel and redshirt junior Reed Johnson all hitting the floor after practicing all last year. “All of our guards have been stepping up in practice so far this season and we are hoping to see them all contribute in their own way on the court,” stated Havens. The Tigers also expect to be bolstered at the point guard spot by junior Stirling Thomas. Thomas averaged 19.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game for Western Oklahoma State last season and helped the team to a 40-20 record over the past two seasons. ECU also added sophomore Jeremy Atkins, junior Jared Griffin and junior Deron Hill to the guard spot.

14

“Having returners in place to step up into a leadership role and show the newcomers the high expectations we have for effort and execution that we have for this program has helped tremendously,” Havens stated. “Having that leadership in place will make it easier for us to build on the success that we had last year.” The Tigers start the 2014-15 season at the GAC/Northern Sun Intercollegiate Challenge in Bartlesville, Okla., Nov. 14-15. The games will not count against the NCAA allowed 26-game schedule as it is a regional challenge and will help ECU see how they stack up against other teams from the region that they may face in the postseason. The Tigers will face Southwest Minnesota State (Nov. 14) and Wayne State College (Nov. 15), with Arkansas Tech also participating in the tournament. “I like to play good competition and this challenge is a great chance for us to have a measuring stick earlier in the season to see where we are at against those programs,” Havens said. “This is also a great opportunity to play against regional opponents on a neutral floor.” The GAC portion of the season starts the following week at ArkansasMonticello and Henderson State, Nov. 20-22. The first home game of the 2014-15 campaign will take place Nov. 25 against Rogers State. Other non-conference games on the slate for the year are against Missouri Western State and Cameron at the Drury Thanksgiving Classic (Nov. 28-29), College of Faith (Dec. 15), Hillsdale Baptist College (Dec. 16) and Southwestern Adventist (Dec. 19).

JERRY ANDERSON

Terry Shannon, a nine-year assistant under Wayne Cobb, took over the Tiger head coaching duties midway through the 2002-03 season through the 2009-10 campaign.

A 1951 graduate of ECU, Anderson returned to his alma mater in 1967 after the retirement of coach Mickey McBride.

2003-2010

Shannon guided ECU to one conference postseason tournament appearance. During his assistant and head coaching stints, Shannon helped develop five AllAmericans, 36 all-conference selections, nine academic all-conference honorees and seven conference freshmen of the year.

1967-77

At ECU, he won three District 9 titles and appeared in the NAIA tournament in 1970, 1971 and 1975. He compiled a record of 134-138 with the Tigers in a 10-year span. Overall, he compiled a mark of 344-323 in his 23 years as coach, counting his days at Panhandle State and Blackwell. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984.

WAYNE COBB

MICKEY MCBRIDE

Wayne Cobb, the winningest coach in ECU basketball history and an NAIA Hall of Famer, posted a 417-251 record in 24-plus seasons for the Tigers.

McBride took the basketball coaching job at ECU in 1927 after a stellar career at the University of Oklahoma.

1978-2003

His accomplishments include eight regular season conference titles, six 20-win seasons, four NAIA National Tournament appearances and two postseason conference tournament championships. He took the Tigers to the NAIA finals in 1989 and ECU advanced to the NAIA’s Elite Eight twice, in 1996 and 1998, under his direction.

1927-42, 1946-67

In the years that followed, McBride sandwiched 39 years at ECU around a four-year service stint during World War II. He retired in 1967 after posting a 412-253 record at ECU. Overall, McBride won more than 600 games, including his days as a high school coach. He lead the Tigers to nine OCC titles and six trips to the NAIA Tournament.

Cobb’s career coaching record is 638-345, which included coaching stints at Chattanooga High School (two years), Sulphur High School (one year) and Murray State College (nine seasons). He had only three losing seasons at ECU and a total of five during his entire 35-year career.
