Dr. Jeff WILLIAMS Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration. Williams emerged as a leader within athletic administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletic experience with the next generation of athletic administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become one of ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009. Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.
Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices. “I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our Tigers to earn their degree while having a great experience as a student-athlete. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!” Both Williams and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9. “Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”
Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

TIGER FIELD: HOME OF THE TIGERS
Tiger Field was added to the East Central University athletic landscape in 1996 when softball was added as a varsity sport. In 2005 the area was enhanced with the addition of the Soccer/Softball Athletic Complex. The building houses both the softball and soccer team’s locker rooms, an athletic training room, coaches offices, a hitting cage and public restrooms. In 2009, Tiger Field was upgraded with a new press box and bleacher seating. The improvements have continued over the years, including a new Daktronics scoreboard (2010), a new backstop (2013) and a new wind screen (2014).

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM
The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a handson environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes. The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Activities Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams. The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
There are also athletic training facilities located in the Elvan George Locker Room for football and in the Women’s Athletic Complex for soccer and softball.

Destini ANDRSON Head Coach 218-179-1 (9th Season)
Destini Anderson has guided the East Central University softball program to five-straight winning seasons after taking over as head coach in the summer of 2006. She will be heading into her ninth season at the helm in 2015. The Tigers finished the 2014 season with a 33-25 overall record and a 22-18 mark in a very tight Great American Conference race. Seven players from the 2014 roster earned spots on the All-GAC teams, with senior Gina Mengwasser taking the top honor as the All-GAC First Team pick. Four other players were named to the All-GAC Second Team (Sydney Dow, Samantha McGraw, Leah Tigert and Autumn Suydam), while two others were All-GAC Honorable Mention selections (Jordynn VanPelt and Kaile Marcum). Anderson reached the 200-win milestone in her career during the 2014 season, recording her 200th win March 21, 2014 in the 4-2 win at Southern Nazarene. The 2013 season was the best performance by the Tigers under Anderson’s lead, finishing with a 42-13 overall record. ECU also finished second in the GAC standings, with a 23-7 mark. The Tigers earned several postseason honors, including senior Shelby Simmons being named to the Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention team, Daktronics All-Region First Team, GAC Player of the Year and All-GAC First Team. ECU also saw freshman Lacey Paulk named the GAC Freshman of the Year and claim All-GAC First Team honors. Junior Gina Mengwasser also earned All-GAC First Team and Daktronics All-Region Honorable Mention honors. Anderson led the Tigers to their first winning season, under her direction, in 2010 as they went 34-21 and landed a berth in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship game, before falling to nationally-ranked Angelo State. In 2011, Anderson’s ECU squad went 38-16 and reached the LSC Tournament finals again before falling to West Texas A&M. Then in 2012, the Tigers finished 27-18 and took third in the new GAC regular season while coaching GAC Player of the Year Emily Kennemer, who also picked up a Daktronics AllRegion award and a Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America honor.
2015 TIGER SOFTBALL
Anderson has a career 218-179-1 record as ECU head coach. She is only the second head coach in program’s history, replacing Ron Miller, who retired in July of 2006. Anderson, a native of Minco, had an impressive run from 200306 as the head softball coach at Canyon High School (Texas), where she guided the squad to a 72-33 record in three seasons, including the school’s first two district titles and regional appearances in the program’s history. Prior to coaching at Canyon, Anderson served as graduate assistant coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where she performed numerous tasks such as developing an off-season strength and conditioning program, conducting individual workouts for pitchers and catchers and organizing team practices to name a few. Anderson is a 2001 graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University where she garnered several awards and set numerous school records. She was inducted into the OBU Athletic Hall of Fame in November of 2009. She was named OBU’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2001 and served as captain of the Lady Bison softball team. Anderson holds OBU career records for most strikeouts (473) as a pitcher, hits as a batter (213), runs batted in (146), runs scored (133) and doubles (49). Also, she owns Lady Bison season records for doubles (15), walks as a batter (28), games pitched (42), complete games (31), innings pitched (229) and strikeouts (210). Anderson has also served as a softball camp counselor since 1997 and has conducted individual pitching lessons from 1996 to present. She received her bachelors of science in sports medicine degree from OBU with a minor in psychology. She also has a master’s of education in health and physical education degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Teddy ABBOTT Volunteer Assistant 1st Season
Teddy Abbott returns to the East Central University softball program as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2015 season after spending three seasons as an assistant (2010-12) under Destini Anderson. Abbott comes to the Tigers after two seasons at Abilene Christian University as an assistant softball coach. Besides his time at ECU, Abbott also spent two years at Tulsa (2007-08) as an assistant coach. He has also coached for more than a decade at the high school level, and has 20 years of additional experience coaching around the summer ball and club team circuits. Abbott helped transform the Tigers into a winning ball club during his tenure at ECU. The Tigers won 34 games in his first year – a 22-game improvement from the year prior - and had six players bat above .300. The team also experienced a surge in home run production and qualified for its first conference tournament in more than a decade. The 2011 ECU again finished as the conference runner-up for the second-straight year behind an overall record of 38-16. Abbott’s hitters combined for 44 home runs with five individuals hitting .300 or better. ECU finished 27-18 in 2012 as part of the newly created Great American Conference. EXPERIENCE KEY TO 2015 SOFTBALL SUCCESS The East Central University softball team will be looking to improve on their 33-25 overall record from a season ago. The Tigers have a strong chance of doing just that, as they have 14 returners, including seven starters on the 2015 squad. “That kind of experience is like having nine coaches on the field and that gives us a lot of leadership, talent and potential for the season,” said head coach Destini Anderson. “I think that experience is what is going to push us through to the next level.” Of the 14 returners from the 2014 season, five student-athletes were honored by the Great American Conference last season for their performances. Sophomore Sydney Dow, senior Samantha McGraw and junior Autumn Suydam all earned All-GAC Second Team honors. Junior Jordynn VanPelt and senior Kaile Marcum were also honored by the league with All-GAC Honorable Mention selections. Dow led the team in the circle, with a 12-4 record, four shutouts, eight complete games and 132 strikeouts. McGraw had a .337 batting average, 57 hits, 29 runs and 34 RBIs. Suydam hit .389 and garnered 63 hits, 41 runs and 18 RBIs. VanPelt led the team and league with 59 RBIs and added 56 hits, 15 home runs, 38 runs scored and a .348 batting average. Marcum led the team with a .406 average and garnered 63 hits, 36 runs and 16 RBIs. Those five are not the only players to return with experience from the past few seasons, as the Tigers will be deep in every area on the field and at the plate. With such a large group of returners and only 10 spots in the scorebook for a given game it has led to a lot of competition for playing time. One of the best things that Anderson has seen from this is versatility. “In the fall we moved players around a lot so that they could get used to playing any position on the field,” commented Anderson. “We now not only have a very experienced group, but one that is very versatile group as well.” Some teams may struggle with a system that could place your anywhere on the field or on the bench on a given day, but Anderson knows that her team has one key component to make this all possible. “What I like most about this team is that we trust each other on and off the field,” Anderson stated. “That trust takes the pressure off each individual player and that will help us in the long run.” The one area on the field that is more specialized is in the circle, where the Tigers have three returners and one newcomer to put into the rotation.

“We are going to be deeper in the circle,” Anderson said. “With our rigorous schedule that will be key for us, so having three returning pitchers and an experienced newcomer who all know what we want will be key.” ECU will return senior Brianna Nunely, junior Lacey Paulk and sophomore Sydney Dow, while they have added junior Marissa Shaffer, who helped Seminole State to the NJCAA National tournament in 2014. “We have a good mix of power and finesse and that mix is what is going to be the difference maker for us in the circle,” commented Anderson. One of the key areas is at catcher, where the Tigers lost a 2014 AllGAC First Team pick in Gina Mengwasser to graduation a year ago. However, Mengwasser did not go far, becoming a graduate assistant coach for ECU and ready to help guide the next generation of Tiger catchers, like senior Kayci Snider and junior Taylor Davis. “Kayci Snider was a very solid catcher for us,” added Anderson. “Taylor Davis adds a spark and will help ease the load at catcher and keep everyone’s legs fresh.” The Tigers’ experience will be heavily tested right at the start of the season, as they were invited to participate in the 2015 NFCA DII Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz. “It is an invite only tournament, so we are honored to have earned the respect of the softball community to be extended the invitation.” The pressure will start in the opening game of the tournament, as ECU will battle with 2014 NCAA DII National Champion West Texas A&M. “It is also exciting to be able to face West Texas A&M,” stated Anderson. “How else would any team that is ready for a challenge like to start out the season. The team is pumped and ready to accept the challenge that this tournament brings.” The 2015 schedule for ECU will have a heavy road factor, with only five weekend series scheduled for Tiger Field. The first test at home will come Feb. 20-21 when ECU opens the GAC season against Henderson State. “Being on the road so much during the regular season makes you used to traveling.” Anderson said. “Spending that much time with everyone confined in a bus or hotel rooms allows us to grow as a team and bond.“
