Dr. Jeff WILLIAMS Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration. Williams emerged as a leader within athletic administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletic experience with the next generation of athletic administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become one of ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009. Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.
Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices. “I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our Tigers to earn their degree while having a great experience as a student-athlete. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!” Both Williams and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9. “Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”
Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM
The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a handson environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes. The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Activities Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams. The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
There are also athletic training facilities located in the Elvan George Locker Room for football and in the Women’s Athletic Complex for soccer and softball.
