Dr. Jeff WILLIAMS Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration. Williams emerged as a leader within athletic administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletic experience with the next generation of athletic administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become one of ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009. Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.

Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices. “I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our Tigers to earn their degree while having a great experience as a student-athlete. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!” Both Williams and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9. “Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”

Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

KEN TURNER FIELD FIELD: HOME OF THE TIGERS

The baseball field was added to the East Central University athletic landscape in 1976 and has undergone several upgrades over the past 30 years.

The most recent and notable change was the naming of the field, Ken Turner Field in honor of legendary ECU baseball coach Ken Turner. The field was dedicated Oct. 25, 2014 as part of the 2014 Homecoming festivities. In 2009 the field was enhanced with the addition of the press box and stands. In 2009, the baseball team renovated the baseball building. The building holds coaches’ offices, a locker room, indoor hitting cage, laundry facilities and public restrooms.

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM

The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a handson environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes. The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Activities Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams. The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries. BASEBALL LOOKING TO ADD TO 2014 SUCCESS The East Central University baseball team will be looking to continue the success it started in 2014 and will have a strong chance to do so as they return 22 players, including eight starters from the roster. The Tigers put together a 26-23 overall record and a 14-16 mark in the Great American Conference in 2014 after dealing with tragedy before the school year even started. ECU finished tied for seventh in the standings and just missed earning its first trip to the GAC Championship. The Tigers saw six members of the 2014 squad earn All-GAC honors, the most representatives in a single season. Four of those players will return for 2015, with juniors Garrett Donohoe, Luc Pomales, Nick Spini (All-GAC Second Team) and Andrew Ayrado (honorable mention) on the roster. “This year we have some good leadership, four all-conference players returning, a lot of experience on the mound and we addressed the holes left by players like Josh Lavender, Ethan Gold and Michael Mariano in recruiting,” commented head coach Dino Rosato. The quartet may be the only returners that were honored, but the entire team gained valuable experience in 2014 and that experience will be a key to the success for 2015. “The experience factor is going to help the team this season,” said head coach Dino Rosato. “We have been blessed with good groups of young men coming through each year and their preparation will dictate their level of success.” ECU will be senior heavy this season, with 16 of the 31 players on the roster playing their final season for the Tigers. One of the areas where the competition will play out the most is in the outfield, where there are five seniors and a junior fighting for one of three spots. “We have seniors everywhere in the outfield, which leads to great experience,” added Rosato. “This group of student-athletes also brings tremendous leadership to the field.” The Tigers will also return basically their entire infield, including two of those all-conference players. “If our group of infielders has good years, I see us as being pretty formidable offensively,” Rosato stated. “We have several players battling for spots on the field and a lot of that will come down to who produces most at the plate.” According to Rosato, one of the key positions for ECU’s success will be

2014 Great American Conference Baseball Preseason Poll

behind the plate. The Tigers return two catchers that split action behind the plate in 2014 and Andrew Ayrado led the team with a .413 batting average. “I always like to think that our pitchers aren’t as good as our catchers and we have to really strong catchers in Andrew Ayrado and Bryce McKee,” said Rosato. “Both are solid defenders, are pretty good at the plate and are really strong communicators.” The ECU pitching staff is far from inexperienced, with seven players returning to the 2015 roster that saw time on the mound in 2014. The top returner from the group is senior Lucas Kaplan, who went 4-4 in 13 appearances and three complete games a year ago. “Lucas Kaplan was are Friday starter last year and the sky is the limit with him for this season,” Rosato commented. “He is a steady force for us and that is what we need first in the pitching staff.” But the ECU pitching staff will have several players who will be looked at to continue to step up like they did at the end of last season and during the fall. “Last year we had several pitchers step up late last season and we will be expecting more from them this season,” added Rosato. “We also added some transfers that showed that they have the stuff to be one of our weekend pitchers during the fall.” The Tigers will open the season, Saturday, Jan. 31 at Cameron and will then head to a tournament at Dallas Christian to help them prepare for the grueling GAC schedule that starts Feb. 13-14 at Southwestern Oklahoma State.
