Dr. Jeff WILLIAMS Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Williams became the East Central University Director of Athletics January 1, 2013. His appointment follows over 15 years of service to ECU, most recently as the chair of the ECU Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Williams was hired by ECU in 1999 as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer. By 2003, he had built and developed the staff, students and curriculum into ECU’s first nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). In 2007, he was named Chair of the Kinesiology Department, where he was responsible for overseeing all four undergraduate degree programs, along with coordinating the Master of Secondary Education degree program in Sports Administration. Williams emerged as a leader within athletic administration while guiding this graduate program, which provided a platform for sharing his years of athletic experience with the next generation of athletic administrators. All academic programs demonstrated growth in scope and size under his leadership, but the most prolific growth was experienced in Sports Administration, which had become one of ECU’s largest graduate program by 2009. Prior to this administrative appointment, Williams held a tenured associate professor position at ECU. He has also served in other leadership capacities, including university committees and faculty senate president. He received his doctorate of philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, master of human relations in student development from OU in 1999 and a bachelor of science in health and sports sciences from OU in 1996. He attended ECU from 1991-1993 prior to joining the Oklahoma Sooners as an athletic training student in 1993.
Over the span of his 17 year career, Williams has worked closely with athletic programs across all levels of competition, from youth to professional sports. However, it is within the NCAA DII level that Williams is committed. As a scholar, Williams researched the NCAA DII environment, seeking out the best practices. “I believe in the NCAA Division II philosophy of equally balancing athletics and academics. Our ultimate goal at ECU is for our Tigers to earn their degree while having a great experience as a student-athlete. I am happy to lead a program full of coaches and staff who embrace this approach at a university that appreciates such efforts,” reveals Williams. “President Hargrave and I have one primary goal - to move Tiger Athletics forward by creating the best experiences possible for our student-athletes, our campus community and the Ada community. The Tigers WILL compete for GAC and NCAA championships!” Both Williams and his wife Shelly (Jeter) graduated from Latta High School. Shelly also attended ECU prior to graduating from the University of Oklahoma and later the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She is a speech language pathologist for Latta schools. They have two sons – Jace, 15 and Kale, 11; and a daughter Katelynn, 9. “Tiger Athletics has a rich tradition of great teams. Our past successes are indeed historic and we are ready to see history repeat itself. We believe in our student-athletes today. We believe in our coaches today. We believe in our fans, alumni and supporters today. This is not a place you can experience once and move on. This is a place where once you become a Tiger, you’re always a Tiger!”
Prior to coming “home” to ECU, Dr. Williams’ other professional credits include clinical instructor and supervisor of the athletic training program at Rose State College (1997-1999), Midwest Regional Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Coordinator (1997-1999) and Physical Performance Center Staff Certified Athletic Trainer in Norman (1996-1997).

KERR ACTIVITIES CENTER: HOME OF THE TIGERS
ECU’s Robert S. Kerr Activities Center is one of the top basketball facilities in the region.
Built in 1974, the golden geodesic dome has been a landmark for ECU. The 50,000 square-foot structure will comfortably seat over 2,700 people. The three-level center, built on a hillside, also houses classrooms, coaches’ offices and reception areas. In addition to serving as the home for the ECU men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team, Kerr Activities Center is also used for graduation ceremonies, special community events, concerts, high school basketball tournaments and intramurals. The lobby of the Kerr Activities Center recently received a facelift, with the addition of the History of East Central University men’s basketball wall. The display takes a chronological look at the success of ECU men’s basketball from 1927 to the present. Featured are team photos of conference champions and national qualifying teams, along with past All-Americans and allconference selections. The wall was designed by Taylor 3D. Those making donations toward the display were: Ryan Eaves, Phil Johnson, Jim Kemp, Chuck Liston, Tommy Quaid, Terry Ringenberg, Terry Shannon, Gerald Williamson and Jim Wooldridge.

ECU ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM
The East Central University Athletic Training Education Program has been a key to the Tigers success over the years. The program serves to not only help the ATEP students learn in a handson environment, but it allows the ECU Athletic Department to provide athletic health care for its student-athletes. The main athletic training clinic is located on the bottom floor of the Kerr Activities Center (KAC) in room 122. The main athletic training clinic is staffed by nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers, each of whom is assigned to various athletic teams. The athletic trainers work in conjunction with team physicians to provide comprehensive athletic health care, ranging from emergency first aid and injury evaluation to rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
There are also athletic training facilities located in the Elvan George Locker Room for football and in the Women’s Athletic Complex for soccer and softball.

COLE ERA BEGINS AT ECU After finishing 19-9 overall in the past two seasons and a new coach at the helm of the team, expectations are high for the East Central University women’s basketball program heading into the 2014-15 season. The Tigers hired first-year head coach Matt Cole in April 2014, making him just the fourth head coach in school history dating back to 1956. “To come to East Central as just the fourth head coach in the history of the program is an honor,” said Matt Cole. “I look forward to the challenges ahead and plan to continue the strong tradition of the ECU women’s basketball program.” Cole has spent the last 11 years as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Northeastern State where he helped the RiverHawks to seven NCAA Tournaments, including two Sweet 16 appearances. He will bring that championship experience to a team that has seven returning letterwinners and two returning starters. ECU will have a strong start to the basics this season, as there are five seniors that have all seen large amounts of playing time, with two starting last season. The Tigers also return two sophomores and two redshirt freshmen, while adding three to the roster in 2014-15. “The expectations that the team has this season are to build on what the previous teams had accomplished,” said Cole. “Hopefully we will be able to push over the top and make the GAC Championship game.” ECU will have three returning forwards, including senior Dilan Webster who is already the career leader in blocks for the Tigers (126). Webster was named to the All-GAC Honorable Mention Team a season ago and is one of four players that averaged double-digit point totals for the season at 11.2 points and added 6.3 boards per outing. The Tigers also return senior Ashleigh Kelman-Poto and sophomore Jalyn Jackson at the post spots. Kelman-Poto tallied 5.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, while Jackson added 2.4 points and the secondhighest rebounding total on the team at 6.4 per game. The forward position will also be bolstered by the addition of redshirt freshman Kendal Rogers and freshman Lexie Chancellor.
Janee Garza. Fischer led the team with 1.7 assists per game, while contributing 4.4 points and 1.9 boards per outing. Garza transferred in to ECU and made an immediate impact with 5.4 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. The Tigers will also gain competition for playing time at guard from redshirt freshman Alexa Adair, sophomore Tori Huff and freshman Mariah Meyer. “All of our guards have adapted well to our new system and have done what we have asked to improve their individual game play,” commented Cole.
“Our forward play is very strong and despite having fewer numbers in the post, I believe that we are deepest in the post,” Cole added.
While this is Cole’s first season as a head coach, it did not stop him from putting together a strong non-conference schedule to test ECU early and prepare for the Great American Conference games.
The Tigers have the largest numbers in the guard position, with three returners and three newcomers. ECU returns senior-starter Erin Walling, who garnered 11.1 points, 4.2 points and 1.1 assists per game in 2013-14.
The Tigers open the season at Rogers State (Nov. 15) and will play non-league games against regional opponents like Cameron (Nov. 25), Texas Woman’s (Nov. 29), Texas A&M Commerce (Dec. 16), St. Gregory’s (Dec. 20) and Central Oklahoma (Dec. 31).
The Tigers also have returning senior guards in Taylor Fischer and
“I believe in region games are important for our schedule,” said Cole. “I like to create a schedule that will challenge the team in non-conference games because it mixes in so well with the high level of competition we have in the GAC.”
