Hume: ‘The only change that truly matters is in the human heart.’

In 1998, nationalist politician John Hume and unionist politician David Trimble were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ‘for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland’. For years, the two men had tirelessly worked together to bring about peace, even though they did not always see eye to eye.

In doing so, they set an example that helped to bring other nationalists and unionists into the peace process.

Hume also played an important role in bringing about the Provisional IRA’s ceasefire, which was necessary for the peace talks to begin. Below is a famous quote from each of these politicians.

Anne Frank was a Jewish girl whose family spent two years hiding from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands.

They stayed in a small, hidden flat in an office building. The family’s non-Jewish friends smuggled in food and other supplies for them.

Anne kept a diary describing her life during this time. Towards the end of the war, the family were discovered and sent to concentration camps.

Otto Frank, Anne’s father, was the only survivor.

After the war, he published Anne’s diary so that the world would know her story.

November 19, 1942: Mr Dussel has told us much about the outside world we’ve missed for so long. He had sad news. Countless friends and acquaintances have been taken off to a dreadful fate. Night after night, green and grey military vehicles cruise the streets. They knock on every door, asking whether any Jews live there.

If so, the whole family is immediately taken away. If not, they proceed to the next house. It’s impossible to escape their clutches unless you go into hiding. They often go around with lists, knocking only on those doors where they know there’s a big haul to be made. They frequently offer a bounty, so much per head. It’s like the slave hunts of the olden days… I feel wicked sleeping in a warm bed, while somewhere out there my dearest friends are dropping from exhaustion or being knocked to the ground. I get frightened myself when I think of close friends who are now at the mercy of the cruellest monsters ever to stalk the Earth. And all because they’re Jews.
