Imagine that you are a 12-year-old child living in Poland in the 16th century. You have just heard about the new theories of an astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus. If his theories are correct, then some of the teachings of the Catholic Church have been wrong all along. What might this mean for humanity? Write a diary entry exploring what you think the future will be like in 500 years’ time if Copernicus’s theories are correct.

Hi, my name is Martina. My husband Joe and I are dairy farmers in Ireland. We have recently been told by our local authority that a wind farm is planned for just up the road from our farm. The local authority assured us that we would get great benefit from it, but we were not convinced. We met with our local Wind Energy Awareness group on Tuesday, along with many of our neighbours. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the wind farm with an agent from the local authority. We have decided to start a campaign to oppose the wind farm.

Hume: ‘The only change that truly matters is in the human heart.’
of
In 1998, nationalist politician John Hume and unionist politician David Trimble were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ‘for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland’. For years, the two men had tirelessly worked together to bring about peace, even though they did not always see eye to eye. In doing so, they set an example that helped to bring other nationalists and unionists into the peace process. Hume also played an important role in bringing about the Provisional IRA’s ceasefire, which was necessary for the peace talks to begin. Below is a famous quote from each of these politicians.

Many maps show latitude in jumps of 20°. This is done to prevent the map from getting cluttered with lots of lines. Looking at the map above, we can see that Ireland lies between the latitudes of 40° N and 60° N. We can figure out that Ireland’s latitude is roughly 55° N. Can you see how the latitude of the North Pole is 90° N, and the latitude of the South Pole is 90° S?

A barometer is used to measure air pressure in order to forecast the weather. We are going to make a simple barometer and use it to keep track of the atmospheric pressure every day for three weeks. At the same time, we are going to record the weather conditions each day on page 35.

The Greeks fought off an Egyptian invasion during the GrecoPersian Wars. The Erechtheion in Athens was built to mark the spot where Zeus and Poseidon fought to control the city of Athens. Athena was the patron goddess of Athens and the Parthenon was built in her honour. Staple foods in Ancient Greece included beef, cow’s milk, potatoes, bananas and kiwi fruit. The first two letters in the Greek alphabet are alpha and beta. The first Olympic Games were held on Mount Olympus in honour of the gods.

Anne Frank was a Jewish girl whose family spent two years hiding from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands. They stayed in a small, hidden flat in an office building. The family’s non-Jewish friends smuggled in food and other supplies for them. Anne kept a diary describing her life during this time. Towards the end of the war, the family were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Otto Frank, Anne’s father, was the only survivor. After the war, he published Anne’s diary so that the world would know her story.

November 19, 1942: Mr Dussel has told us much about the outside world we’ve missed for so long. He had sad news. Countless friends and acquaintances have been taken off to a dreadful fate. Night after night, green and grey military vehicles cruise the streets. They knock on every door, asking whether any Jews live there. If so, the whole family is immediately taken away. If not, they proceed to the next house. It’s impossible to escape their clutches unless you go into hiding. They often go around with lists, knocking only on those doors where they know there’s a big haul to be made. They frequently offer a bounty, so much per head. It’s like the slave hunts of the olden days… I feel wicked sleeping in a warm bed, while somewhere out there my dearest friends are dropping from exhaustion or being knocked to the ground. I get frightened myself when I think of close friends who are now at the mercy of the cruellest monsters ever to stalk the Earth. And all because they’re Jews.

C Letter home
Ire la n
d
Imagine you are an Inca commoner who has recently started working as a servant at the palace of the Sapa Inca. If you could write a letter to your community, what would you say about the great luxury you have seen at the palace? How has your life changed for the better and for the worse? What do you miss about home?
