A Spark of an Idea Loads of Passion By Sharlene De Chickera

itting by the poolside at his

S residence, Ananda, is dressed in

denims and t-shirt and is seemingly on holiday. But, in reality he has not been on holiday, though he is supposed to have been! Instead he has worked day and night, working towards a strict deadline, to ensure that the University of Moratuwa was gifted with the most state-of-the-art electronic computer lab! A professional in power electronics systems, with a wealth of experience, spanning 50 years, a spate of interesting projects under his belt and a never-ending passion for innovation and new designs, Ananda is passionate about the projects he undertakes, for the benefit of humanity, or the ultimate consumer. The lab which is a gift for the students of the University of Moratuwa, will transform the lives of the students who are studying for their degrees in Electronic Engineering. Funded at a cost of Rs. 10 million the lab has facets and features that are on par with the best in the world. Speaking to Ananda, he recounts an example of a student from a rural school, in Ambalangoda. This chap had no exposure to computers but was extremely ‘good with his hands’, and had been extremely enthusiastic,

energetic and an inspiration in hardwork, during the project.

Passion This is what we need in the youngsters of today, says Ananda, empahtically! He also adds that in terms of children and educating them that it is best for them to be left to

choose what they want to do! He opines that stifling their creativity is the worst thing to do, and encourages parents to allow children to have freedom in making the discerning choices for the future. Why do parents encourage their children to be Doctors, or Engineers, or Accountants? Why not something like Entrepreneurship? The best way is to let the child find his passion and then select the industry that best suits him!

Mechatronics Ananda highlights that the electronic Engineering field has great scope, as power electronics is part and parcel of the modern world. He says that Manufacturing, Cement, Hospitals, Bottling Plants and related industries benefit from the discipline of Mechatronics, as it involves the three disciplines of Electronic Engineering, Software Engineeringand Mechanical Engineering,. He is also averse to the “tuition culture” in Sri Lanka and laughs in the face of qualifications. “If you kick a dustbin a few Phds, Masters and other assorted degrees will fall out”, he chuckles. What is most important is a plan, sticking to it through hard work and having a clear vision. This practical advice comes from a veteran in the industry and should not be taken lightly.

Mechatronics By Nalin Goonewardene

echatronics has come a long way since its inception in the 1960s by a Japanese engineer when he used computer technology to control electric motors. It is now an excellent career that blends three different disciplines namely electronic, mechanical, and computer engineering, into one exciting profession. It has moved forward from limited robots on assembly lines to many adaptable products of varying sizes and capabilities playing a major role in many industries from relatively simple consumer products to sophisticated automobile and aircraft management systems. If you are an A/Level student interested in an engineering career related to new technology, there are many paths you can follow with good prospects in the future. Just remember that when you graduate - perhaps around 2020, the world will be very different at the rate of change taking place now. But that will only be the beginning of the technology explosion due to come - see below for future prospects. You could do well by studying Mechatronics. When choosing a course to follow, consider the following: Do the subjects cover evolving technology of today? Is the course related to industry in your chosen field? Are there external knowledge lectures and affiliated interest groups? Will you learn new techniques and ways of working? Will your course follow developing but recognised Standards? - Will the Certification you receive be well accepted?

Technology and others. Also, Diploma courses giving NVQ levels from Maradana College of Technology and others. These appear to be of varying depths, some focussed on textiles and agriculture. Many Universities abroad have advanced courses, but these can be expensive. To get a wider flavour of the subject, surf the websites of San Jose State University Mechatronics USA, Mechatronics Research Group atLoughborough UK, Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Programme Germany and UNESCO Chair on Mechatronics Istanbul.

addition the functional capability to control devices to sense, actuate and feedback can provide unimagined solutions and hence employment opportunities. Of the vast number of development areas that will flourish here are a few: Miniaturisation - smaller control units and sensors will enable their use in industrial applications and consumer goods. Nano-technologies will become more cost-effective. Autonomous devices - will allow independent devices to use environmental sensors to make changes on-the-fly without external commands and regulate themselves while operating at peak performance. Modularisation - will utilise mechatronic sub-units that are both intelligent and selfcontained allowing Engineers to efficiently mix and match units as relevant. Bio-medical field - will accelerate its use of both diagnostic and treatment devices Robotic Engineering - the demand for robotic engineers is expected to increase by more than 13% over the next 5 years

Prospects for the future

Conclusions

The future of Mechatronics is almost guaranteed because it can improve process efficiency, reduce errors and lower manufacturing costs. In

A Mechatronics degree will enable you to put your foot on the first rung of this exciting and versatile ladder which can take you to areas not even imagined. To benefit from this, the course of study you pursue should be connected with the growing changes taking place else your skills may be outdated after you graduate. Get satisfactory answers to the questions posed above to help you identify a suitable course from an accredited and recognised source to set you up for the future. Aim to make the knowledge acquired be in demand so the job finds you not vice versa, Your success will depend on your interest, talent and capabilities together with determination, dedication and hard work.

Mechatronics Product Design Engineer at 16 university system that is accessible only to a few, not only as obsolete but a limitation for economic growth. To become an Engineer, English is critical since most of the resources are in English. “If you want to participate in the global economy, you must learn English, and it's available online for free!”

By Nadeesha Paulis

ow much of your university “H education do you really use at work?” asks Tilak Dissanayake as we sat for a tete-a-tete in his office cum living room, or “Palace of Chaos” as he likes to call it. “In all my 38 years as an Engineer, I have only used sin, cos and tan from the many years of trigonometry that I took. Now you can learn those in one minute online,” exclaims Tilak who has been a product design engineer in companies such as Boeing and Xerox. He emphasises the need for an education system that prepares youngsters to thrive in a world where they actually apply the skills and knowledge to make the world a better place. Tilak is confident that they can create a mechatronics product design Engineer by age 16. The secret behind such a development is outcome based education (OBE) with focused online material (such as from the Khan Academy). This system will use simulation tools and physical literacy to build a concept demonstrator to various international standards based on a real business case that can be funded and taken to the market.

The tuktuk delivery system in the sky

Tilak Dissanayake

“What we need are thousands of creative mechatronic product designer Engineers for the age of smart machines. As machines get smarter, there will be less demand for manual labour. If this trend is not met with the right education system, we will end up with high unemployment and social unrest,” says Tilak. In an age of rapid online learning, simulation tools and rapid physical prototyping, Tilak sees the current “input based Engineering education”

Tilak and his small team of Engineers are working on an inexpensive, high-speed robotic drone to carry 20kg of "middle-mile" air cargo. The fleet of drones will have their own segregated airways which will not affect any of the airlines. An endless list of time-sensitive items such as medical supplies, courier packages, cash for ATMs etc. can be transported. "Middlemile" drone delivery in segregated airways is operational for 1 kg packages in Germany (DHL courier packages) and in Rwanda (Zipline blood supplies). Tilak and his team are working hard on getting this project “up and at 'em”. Expolanka Freight wants to be Sri Lanka's first robotic cargo airline which local courier companies, including startups such as Quickee.lk, are eagerly waiting to use.

n a world that has evolved in to a digital age from the Industrial age, IInnovation, Research and Development plays a major role. Although the word Mechatronics is not included in the English Dictionary and sometimes not regarded as a specific Engineering stream in some parts of the world this synergy will be the future of mankind. The following gives a brief description on what you can expect if you follow Mechatronics. Some might have a perception that Mechatronics consists of a combination between Mechanical and Electronics streams purely due to its nomenclature. However very few know that the integral core of Mechatronics is not either of these two but Control. In case a certain individual opts to follow his/ her education in this field you will come across modules that a regular Bachelor student faces during the first two years. This includes some basic courses in Mechanical like Material Science, Machine Design, Machine elements, Mechanics of machinery and basic courses in Electronics like Electronics and Electrical circuits, Semi-Conductor Devices, Signals and Systems. In addition you will be taught the basic of a Programming language maybe it be Python, C, C++ Java etc to make sure you understand the approach into coding, plus basic and in depth courses that would test your mathematics and modelling skills such as Linear Algebra, Discreet Mathematics and Calculus. The challenge in Mechatronics arrives with your 3rd and 4th years due to the fact that most of the content you learn then will be the first in your entire life. You will come across subjects like Automation and Industrial communication, Pneumatics

Magazine

What to expect in Mechatronics? and Hydraulics that would give an insight to PLC/FPGA programming (Ladder diagrams), Field buses and Industrial automation components. You will come to know of Software like Matlab and LabView. The other branch will then focus on your modelling and design skills you will be required to design CAMs, Gears, design complex machine parts and assemblies, and learn your basics in machining, CNC, G codes and machine parts. Familiarising in software like Solidworks, Unigraphics NX, CATIA is vital during these courses since this will play an integral role in the industry. The Electronics branch will focus on teaching circuitry design, embedded control and sometimes system architecture. You will encounter software like Proteus, MPLAB, Altium etc. You will get to know how to deal with micro controllers and micro controller programming. The part that is the core of Mechatronics is Automatic Control which will give and insight in designing control systems that are stable and efficient. You will learn open loop, closed loop control and analysis of the stability of these systems. You will come across nomenclature like Laplace transformation, Z transform, State Space and graphical representation such as root locus, nyquist and Bode plots. In addition to the above stated courses it’s highly advisable to take some non-technical courses such as Technical writing, Economics, Law, or even a Language. This would give a variety and sometimes will help when you write your final year report. Most part of the final year will determine what you do in your future since almost all the subjects are choices and most importantly in the final semester you will have to do a Capstone project that would test the application of all what you have learnt. The subjects can be chosen from sub branches of the course or maybe a mixture of everything. You will have choice ranging from

Automation, Robotics, Embedded Systems, Machine Design and Machine Vision etc. It is important that you do something you like and feel challenging since these courses will go into the depth that one day you can apply them in the industry. The Final Year project is like the icing on the cake of your study since this will give you the first taste of what you would do in the future as Mechatronics or an R&D Engineer. The first part would be a proposal for the project that would require you do your budgeting, draft design, the research into previous work and most importantly set your objectives. You will then have to convince your project panel about the viability and the timelines. Once the proposal gets approved the rest is all up to you. You should be able to manage your timeline the finances and the testing of the design. A basic project will consist of 3 parts namely the Mechanical part, the Electronics and the Software. You apply what you had learnt all though out your studies to get a desirable product. This means that as a future Engineer you are required to do your mathematical modelling, the calculations and the simulations rather than relying on trial and error. After you get your product done it is very important to do the documentation since this will be assessed as well. You should list your Methodology, analysis of the system and maybe list out the possible modification and maybe drawbacks. You will have to proof that the report is your own via a plagiarism test and this will be tested in person in your final defense since your panel will ask minute details and data. If you succeed in going through all the above you will get the title of a Mechatronics Engineer and will be agreat addition to the growing Sri Lankan R&D industry that at the moment is negligible. It is very important that you apply this technical knowledge to build and develop rather than to get a managerial post due to the simple fact that you are one of the very few who actually know to innovate.

hat we call drones today, refer primarily to 4-rotor Quad-copters W which are remotely controlled to fly and hover over selected areas, performing various functions. They are the most exciting developments to emerge and mature enough to be used in providing valuable services, mostly not available before. They can be used to keep track of livestock, follow progress of wildfires, conduct aerial surveying, take photographs, provide film footage for movies, record sporting events, assist law enforcement, deliver items to areas unreachable by conventional means, drop fertiliser, spray insecticide, measure changes in ground, air or weather conditions and more applications not even thought of before. The subject is so vast we cannot do justice to it in a single article. So, let’s look at it briefly from two extremes for the following: Size - can be from a tiny bee size to carrying a human - the Ehang184 just starting its verification in Arizona. Complexity - this varies by usage - military, commercial and type of drone. There are Hexacopters and Octocopters with more engines, blades, power, price, and safety, able to carry greater payloads, fly higher and longer but difficult to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Each has its own virtues applicable to specific situations. Jobs - from a Mechtronics Engineer in charge to a Maintenance Engineer for recovery and repairs with other specialists in between such as mechanical, electronic and computer engineers.

Education and training Currently, there are relatively few courses specifically dealing with the mechatronics approach with some dealing with it as an extension, but more are coming. In the meantime you can follow an existing course in mechanical or electronic engineering, upgrade your computer skills and do some research on the internet. This was the approach taken by some students from the University of Peradeniya who demonstrated their home grown underwater drone at the recent

Engineering exhibition held at the BMICH. There is another way of getting into this technology where your level of UNDERSTANDING will determine how far you can go. While studying your preferred engineering course, you could purchase a Ready-to-Fly system (at an advanced hobby level) to get you familiar with various aspects of drones. This is the starting level advised by experts who say you should match your approach to your capability level as if you try to do too much at the start you may not achieve desired results. One example from the several Ready-to-Fly systems available is the Cheerson CX-10 NanoQuadcopter (World’s Smallest Drone) from

Exciting future in Drones $35.00 which includes a transmitter, has a maximum flight time of 8 minutes, control distance of up to 50 metres and comes fully assembled. It is certified by US authorities to be used as a hobby device and can be purchased online. This approach is affordable and also introduces you to the acronyms of ‘drone language’ like FPV, RTF, BEC etc. while improving your understanding of how drones work and what you want to do next.

Jobs in the industry Today, there are not enough qualified Engineers worldwide who understand the developing technology.

This will become even more acute as these technologies mature so those with the knowledge, skill, understanding and qualifications will be in great demand. Many companies are already carving a niche for themselves by supporting common technologies for drone developments as well as mechatronics devices for the Internet of Things. Some of these are: InvenSense - use proprietary algorithms and firmware to intelligently process, synthesize, and calibrate the output of sensors, maximizing performance and accuracy Ambarella - use low power consumption multi-core processors to deliver ultra-high-speed pixel processing algorithms that enhance dynamic range, eliminate noise and deliver outstanding colour fidelity of HD Video under the most challenging lighting conditions. Skycatch- turns Drone photos into 3D Models starting at just $49, from a variety of file output types heavily used in construction, mining and energy industries. Other companies such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing are active on the military front while Google and Amazon have been authorised to test their delivery drones. The scale of the global drone market is expected to be huge, with PWC putting its potential value at $127bn as operators find new and innovative uses for these versatile aerial vehicles. Instead of job hunting how about providing jobs for others? Become an entrepreneur who joins the drone market by getting a franchise from one of the major developers in the field, or just start by selling parts as others worldwide are doing. Two of the better known companies in this field are 3DRobotics (USA) and Parrot (France). You would need a good background in the subject first as it’s not like selling washing machines.

Conclusions Drone technology and applications are set to take off so the future is bright for those with the ‘right’ capabilities. There is enough scope to let you choose a particular aspect to follow. Formal education is not there yet, so those interested must use their own initiatives to acquire necessary skills. When evaluating, look forwards 5 – 10 years to realise what you must do.

agreed that we are on I ttheis generally brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally change the way we live, work, and relate to each other. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything we have experienced before. Because of the speed with which things can change, affecting everybody, every business and every industry in every country, there can be wide scale disruption to the way of life we have today. This includes entire systems of production, management, and governance. Being an alarmist? Read on and decide.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution The First Industrial Revolution was about steam power, the Second about electric power and the Third about electronics and information technology. Now, the Fourth is about digitalization. Each has built on existing capabilities but change has been relatively slow compared to the fourth which is building on wide ranging information and communications technology, with massive contributions from people all over the world in a common language English. This will lead to an exponential rather than a linear pace of change for which there has been no historical precedent.

Magazine

Furthermore, it is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological technologies with even scientific subject areas and engineering subject matter converging. The possibilities of billions of people connected by mobile devices, with unprecedented processing power, storage capacity, and access to knowledge, are virtually unlimited. These possibilities will be multiplied by emerging technologies in fields such as the Internet of Things, smart machines, robotics, autonomous vehicles, 3-D printing, materials science, energy storage, nanotechnology, biotechnology and quantum computing. This fully mobile and connected society with person-to-thing and thing-to-thing communications will see an immense growth in connectivity, traffic volume, and usage scenarios. To avoid a possible communications ‘crunch’ technologies such as SpaceDivision Multiplexing and 5G Mobile Communications with fiber-like access data rate and “zero” latency are under development. Already we are familiar with technology that has made possible new products and services not dreamed of before, which we take for granted such as booking a flight, buying a product, making a payment, ordering a taxi, listening to music, watching a film, playing a game, any of which can be done remotely. So, accepting that new

experiences are awaiting us cannot be unimaginable. We are yet to see efficiency and productivity gains in transportation, logistics, global supply chains and manufacturing where automation will take full advantage of big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, robotics and the Industrial Internet of Things. These will reduce the cost of production and trade while opening new markets with new players altering existing business models. This can lead to disruption of labour markets and an adjustment in job profiles where displacement of workers by technology can result in an increase in safe and rewarding new jobs for those with the ‘right’ skills. McKinsey recently envisaged that significant differences are likely between industry’s digital “haves,” “have nots” and “have mores”, meaning ignore the revolution at your peril. It can also mean that early adopters can steal a march on the competition.

Even in humanitarian aid, organizations such as ROW - Refugee Open Ware (http://www.row3d. org/) are helping conflict-affected communities to participate in this revolution through R&D, training and startups to leverage the technology driving it – such as robotics, artificial

intelligence, 3D printing, the internet of things, brain-computer interface, and virtual/augmented reality.

Implications Of course these changes will not take place overnight, despite its rate of progress, but by 2020, over one-third of skills (35%) that are considered important in today’s workforce are likely to have changed. So how will it impact those who will graduate in 2020 and beyond? What employment opportunities will exist and how to prepare for them?

What key skills will be needed? These and similar questions depend on what the world will be like then, but where you are in

Get ready for The Fourth Industrial Revolution

the world will not matter as it will effect everybody in every country. With globalization, sustainability challenges, political factors, armed conflicts etc making predictions is a risky thing. But assuming no major disasters, following well researched conclusions gives clues to finding

answers which will mean different things to different people. Of the many opinions on the subject, two worthwhile contributions to read are: 1) Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee (MIT Sloan School of Management) who examine radical changes in employment in their books 'The Second Machine Age' and 'Race Against the Machine'. They look closely at the effects of a variety of technologies being used in diverse fields, such as manufacturing, clerical and retail work, law, financial services, education, medicine, and how they are changing work and employment prospects. 2) The World Economic Forum's report on The Future of Jobs (http:// wef.ch/futureofjobs) A major goal of the report is to analyse the impact of key drivers of change and provide specific information on the relative magnitude of these expected changes by industry and geography, and the expected time horizon for their impact to be felt on job functions, employment levels and skills world wide. Some of the overall skills that will be valued are - complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, Emotional Intelligence, people management, judgement and decision making.

Conclusion If you take these indicators seriously, you should do some research to find answers that impact your particular position, your ambitions and dreams, and your long term prospects. Personally, I would recommend you do not ignore the wave that is coming but find how to ride it at its crest to a glorious future.

Mastering Mechatronics Camso Loadstar Gives a Boost to Youth By Nipun Kotage

Magazine’s Nipun Kotagemet E DEX Rear Admiral Mahesh Goonesekere

USP, JP, Rtd and representatives of Camso Loadstar to learn the hallmark of innovation, productivity par excellence and the use of Mechatronics in the heavy machinery industry, manufacturing tyres. Camso Loadstar Factory situated a few kilometers away from the Commercial Capitol, employs youth, some of whom are engaged in production lines that include Robots and the Engineering Science of Mechatronics. Mechatronics is a combination of Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science Engineering. Though there has been a recent impetus of commencing educational centers in Sri Lanka, the Mechatronics Industry is still not on par with the International innovations, research and development.

Three Trainee students of Camso who have graduated from Kothalawela Defence University and the Uva Wellassa University, joined in the conversation to add insights. They shared interesting information about the Industry per se, syllabi of the 4 Years Degree Programme, and their work which encompasses the facets and features of Mechatronics. The Team at Camso recommended that a four year study period was a must to learn the ‘nitty-gritty’ of Mechatronics. To be on par with the International courses, which are hugely competitive, the students have to derive the best learning from practicals and foreign training and work exposure as well, opined Goonesekere

The secrets of success at Camso Camso Star commenced experiments, in this realm of Engineering, over 20 years back, and

to date they are continuing the research. “At Camso we encourage practical application, which is paramount in working in such an industry. Camso Trainees have the opportunity to learn Electronics, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The Course duration depends on the training period. Currently there are around 150 Trainees out of which 80 are taking up Mechatronics”, informed Goonesekere. Foreign exposure is encouraged, as it gives the employee/youth an impetus. Sri Lankan students are also encouraged to go to countries like the USA to get a competitive advantage, and see for themselves the developments and latest technology in use. Other countries that have excellent courses for Mechatronics include, India, Australia and Germany. Locally there are companies that have a big demand, for qualified Mechatronics Engineers in the ilk of MAS Holdings, Atlas, Unilever Sri Lanka and DSI. At Camso it is of important to master all areas to be a quality Mechatronics Engineer one day. Industries that have a great demand for the Mechatronics Industry, include the Steel Corporation, Cement industry and the Rubber Industry.

Practical application in Mechatronics By Nadeesha Paulis

eat buildings scattered in a wellN kept garden greeted me as I made my way to meet Suraj Jayathilake, Senior Lecturer at the University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC). Suraj has been lecturing here since 2000 and has many ideas of knowledge sharing in mechatronics. He studied for his Masters in Electrical Engineering at Moscow Power Engineering University for seven years and then joined as an instructor at the University of Moratuwa. During his training year in Japan he saw that all of the industries were automated and realised the importance of moving away from the traditional method of teaching to a more practical method of teaching such dynamic subjects such as mechanical, electronics and ICT which later combined into ‘Mechatronics’. Since then, UNIVOTEC has been developing curriculums involving major industries. In his teaching career, he noticed that traditional universities although offering excellent courses, sometimes lack the resources

to motivate students to apply the theories in real life. “The success of mechatronics depends on how well it can be applied in real life. Our degree programmes make the students ‘industry ready’ as they are taught to use this knowledge in practice,” says Suraj. He is proud of the final year projects that were presented by his students such as the automated gas cutting systems and charging optimise for the electric vehicle. “Sri Lankans are creative. Skilled students have so much potential in this field if they can apply their knowledge into practice,” emphasizes Suraj who spoke of a student who was able to increase production of a company from 3000 to 30,000 per day through an automation system that he devised. His salary tripled as the

company was thrilled about this innovation. “Our aim as mechatronics Engineers should be to increase production, quality of the product while reducing labour and other costs in local industries while ensuring sustainability. Production industries such as tea, automobile, furniture, plastic and agriculture can greatly benefit with the knowledge of mechatronics Engineers when they set up systems that increases efficiency,” says Suraj. Suraj says that people who think creatively and innovatively stand to win in this field. “You need to look at a situation and identify how your theory can be applied to this situation to maximise efficiency of the production of the company. Simple innovations such as vending machines have been discovered like that,” he added. Students who have completed NVQ Level 5 and more or who have HND, NDT and NDES are eligible to apply for the weekend and weekday courses offered by the UNIVOTEC. APIIT Business School Brings the Industry into the Classroom The rate at which businesses evolve today is nothing short of breathtaking. Be they local, international or multinational in nature, businesses across the globe are more dynamic in their policies, practices, innovations and overall approaches than ever before. As business becomes more and more global, being current and relevant is critical to maintain one’s competitiveness. This is true not only in the various industries and professions, but also in the sphere of education, which is responsible for laying the foundation for the development of new and imaginative professionals to join and eventually lead the corporate world. The APIIT Business School, offering Honors Degree Programmes as well as MBA Degrees of Staffordshire University, UK, continually strives to address this need. The curriculum of each of the Business Schools’ courses is reviewed and revised every five years, thereby ensuring that the knowledge gained and skills acquired by students are current and relevant. The teaching staff of the APIIT Business School maintain a close rapport with the industry, which is leveraged to expose students to the inner workings of businesses in the real world. Over the course of the 3 years of each of the undergraduate programmes on offer, students are exposed to industry talks in almost all subjects. These interactive sessions are carried out by well-respected professionals with a wealth of knowledge and experience of the day to day workings of organizations as well as the industry as a whole. An impressive number of these industry talks are carried out by APIIT alumni, who hold senior positions in large organizations. Indeed, the industries that APIIT graduates have branched out to range from apparel to telecom and banking to information technology. APIIT Business School continually encourages its students

to actively participate in competitions organized by prominent multinationals in the country. Such opportunities allow our students to engage in the conceptualization, creation and marketing of a product or service which is then eveluated by industry experts. Students are also able to network with the professionals who may one day play a significant role in their chosen career. Each semester also features at least one study tour, which takes students into the actual workplaces where products are made and services delivered. This enables students to apply the theoretical concepts they learn in the classroom to real life scenarios. APIIT continues to innovate and evolve to ensure effective training of the next generation of business professionals in Sri Lanka. Taking industry orientation a step further, the APIIT Business School plans to incorporate an industry placement in the final year. This will enable our students to gain an insight into the functioning of a real company, and enhance further their employment prospects. Over the entire duration of undergraduate studies, APIIT strives to instill a sense of professionalism in students. Soft skills, the ability to carry oneself well, make coherent written and oral presentations, and the ability to work effectively in teams are what make our students stand out from the crowd. These are the skills and abilities that make effective workers and future leaders. The holistic approach to training adopted by the APIIT Business School aims to create well rounded, high quality professionals who will become business leaders in a wide variety of fields. The fact that APIIT graduates are 100% employable with as many as 90% securing employment within three months of graduation goes to show the superior learning experience that our students are exposed to.

Learn about Robotics By Nalin Goonewardene

obots (pronounced including R the ‘t’, not robos) are getting so popular they are even being called Bots. Robotics is the study of robots which are machines that are autonomous (can do jobs by themselves) or be directed by a human. It is considered a subset of mechatronics, since almost all robots are mechatronic but not all mechatronic systems are robots. There are stationary robots like aircraft autopilots, and many types of mobile robots. We usually associate the term with humanoid robots but they also work underwater, in deep space, manufacturing and places that are hazardous to humans or difficult to access. Drones and driverless cars are also robots. Today, robotics is a rapidly growing field, as technological advances continue to serve various practical purposes, domestically, commercially and militarily. This is gives rise to questions on human conflict in terms of jobs, interactions and controls, outside the scope of this article. Different levels and types of knowledge are required to work in Robotics. Study subjects can vary from mechanical system design and analysis, optical systems, thermal fluids, control electronics, embedded systems, computer-aided design, optimisation, simulation, process control, networking, actuator and sensor control, humanmachine interfacing, to micro- and nano-technology and beyond. However, the most controversial and exciting aspect is that of Artificial Intelligence (AI) where ideally a robot is able to learn just about anything, to reason, to use language and to formulate original ideas. If interested, learn more at http://www.neurala.com/.

Certification The Robotics Certification Standards Alliance (RCSA) actively provides robotics curricula, training, online testing systems and certification

since 1998. It is an international authority that confers various industry and educational-related robotics certifications.

Education Sri Lankan University offerings are known to the public. Here we look elsewhere to Universities that offer bachelors and higher degrees in the field of robotics. There are also Vocational schools that offer training aimed at careers in robotics. To provide a flavour of these and to identify different aspects that may be of interest, we give below an overview of options from different countries. This is NOT a recommendation for any of these courses. 1) Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics (IRM), Toronto, Canada IRM focuses on intelligent robots and devices to advance medicine and healthcare as well as next generation of autonomous systems to help with rescue, exploration, military and security. Courses are offered in robotics and mechatronics that lead to an Undergraduate Minor, and Undergraduate Major with the Division of Engineering Science and/or a Graduate Emphasis in Robotics and Mechatronics. 2) University of Liverpool, UK Mechatronics and Robotic Systems BEng (Hons) This 3 year course offers a diversity of subject material with an emphasis on interdisciplinary skills. Project work helps develop ability in teamwork, leadership and independent problem solving. The first year covers fundamentals while the second builds on the first. The final year covers compulsory modules in Mechatronics and Robotic Systems including Embedded Computer Systems, Drives and Industrial Robotics. Optional modules enable the student to develop skills in their particular area of interest. 3) Stark Industries (IAR), Uttrakhand , India

Stark Industries (IAR) is a Technology Innovation company engaged in manufacturing, Research and Development of Innovative and Advanced Technologies related to many industrial fields including Industrial Automation, Embedded Systems and Advanced Robotics. Students are helped to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical learning and invited to work on the best and latest technologies in the fast changing world of robotics.

Further study 4) RMIT University Melbourne, Australia Master of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering) This course prepares students to lead the introduction of new technologies and operating practices in advanced manufacturing and a range of other technical industries including mechanical systems, mechatronics, and micro- and nano-technology. Some of the high-demand areas include Advanced mechatronics system design, Advanced process control, Visual data processing and Advanced robotic systems. 5) Many Masters offerings There are over 100 selected Masters Degree courses in robotics available worldwide at http://www.mastersportal.eu/ disciplines/255/robotics.html. They offer a free and easy online ‘test’ to find out which Master’s programmes match your personality. The test uses multiple choice point-andclick selections covering a wide range of likes/dislikes as well as interests on many varied topics. They also offer scholarships.

Conclusions With such a wealth of educational opportunities, there is something for everyone. It helps if you are clear on a career direction to choose the best option for you.

Mechatronics is the Buzz Word

Dr. Migara Liyanage By Sharlene De Chickera

H

aving initially qualified in Mechanical Engineering from Peradeniya University, and obtaining a PhD, in Mechatronics, Dr. MigaraLiyanage wants the ‘buzz word’ to become a reality for all his students and youth. Having spent Seven Years in Canada for his postgraduate studies and working in mechatronics industry, envisioning unmanned aerial vehicles for parcel delivery andSelf-Driving Cars in the international market in 10-12 years, he urges the

Mechatronics Engineers in Sri Lanka to take up the challenge to automate! He informs us of the Bachelors in Engineering at SLITT, with a specialisation in Mechatronics, a four year degree programme which has witnessed a healthy increase of interested students from 08 to 35 to 60respectively. Entry to state universities is competitive, based on merit, with cut-offs at district level. The students who miss the entry to state universities can gain entry to private universities. The students in concern should have studied, applied mathematics, physical and chemistry. London and Local A/Ls students can apply. Out of the state universities, the Moratuwa University has started a Mechatronics Degree, he informs. We need people with different technical levels – technicians and skilled machinists as well as qualified Mechatronics Engineers. HND, Don Bosco and German Tech offer Diplomas as well, he adds. Hybrid -Inputs from different fields “Though Mechatronics sounds a fancy word, coined by the Japanese, it is a hybrid field which comprises and integrates, components of electronics and intelligence controls, sensor technology, precision engineering and computer programming”, he informs. There are no hard core mechatronics automated plants in Sri Lanka. However, there is some applicability in the garment industry,

Are Sri Lankan youth left without ‘batteries’? food processing industry, automotive industry. But we can’t use robots to replace labour, as labour is cheap. The electronics industry and the software engineering industry has developed, and costs are competitive.

Robots in Garment Industry “The garment industry uses Robots for handling, sorting and tagging”, and large players are transforming to automation”, he says. The robots used are currently manufactured internationally, but some of the components are designed and produced locally, he notes. Mechatronics is also used in food packaging – milk products, milk powder and yoghurt. However he observes that the tea industry are still using Mechatronics in its infant stage. Another industry is the car manufacturing industry in Sri Lanka. Such plants in Sri Lanka have semi-automated production lines. “Colour sorting of tea as a product is automated. Coding is done, to some extent, but the industry has not utilsed the technologies to the fullest, as they still rely on manual labour”, he opines. In hazardous environments Robots are ideally used as well such as in Welding. Mechatronic components were expensive at the outset, but not it is not so now. However, some of the government import taxes hinder development of the area. It is hoped that professionals and government will forge a way for Mechatronics to thrive for youth!

to find a tech savvy youth I twhois hard hasn’t heard about Vega. Being

the first of its kind electric super car completely designed and manufactured by Sri Lankan engineers, Vega has aroused interest in state of the art R&D projects, establishing faith and hope in Sri Lankan industry. According to the visionary concept of Dr. Harsha Subasinghe, the CEO of CodeGen International,Vega project was initiated nearly 3 years ago with a small team of Engineers in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Material and Softwaredisciplines. Currently 12 full time employees and 24 engineeringinterns work in the Vega Project. Engineer Ruwan Senaratne explained us their basic design goals and specifications, 0 to 100km/h just under 4 seconds, a top speed of 240km/h and a range of 240km from a single charge. He also stated that it is not the high end specs that makes this car so special, but the uniqueness shaped by the cultural and technical background that it is designed and build in. He proudly announced that almost all components for Vega, except the drive motors, battery cells and some other minor equipment, are built in Sri Lanka. As stated by the engineers Rashiga Walallawita and Ruwan Maduranga,

special attention is made to reduce the weight of the space-frame chassis and other components as much as possible to compensate the weight the large battery pack, which gives the car its superior performance and range. The final body panels are to be made with carbon fibre, to make the car even lighter and safe. Having the idea of developing infrastructure for future generation automobiles, the team has initiated an electric car charging network, apart from the Vega car project, namely chargeNET. ChargeNET project manager EngineerPabasara Karunanayake described their development in autonomous chargers that can be used by the user himself, and how the future demand for charging stations will be fulfilled by chargeNET. We did not forget to gather insight about their careers at Vega and the development of the mechatronics industry, as it is our interest this volume. The researchscientist, Dr. Beshan shared his memories since childhood, how he was passionate

in electronics and mechanics which finally lead him to this position. There are many opportunities to study mechatronics in government universities as well as in private sectors, I see the passion as the main qualification to be successful in this carrier, Beshan added. He alsohighlighted the fact that Sri Lanka is lagging behind in industrial revolution in terms of mechanizing and automating processes. Besides that, considering the rapid growth in related areas, employability will be high in the field of mechatronics engineering in the near future. Dr. Beshan emphasized the importance of chasing the high end technological market competing with countries like Germany and Italy, rather than going for high volume production and competing with china. Vega plays a critical role in the development of mechatronics related industry in Sri Lanka. While developing technologies in house, Vega also encourages other companies to invest on large scale R&D projects. All in all, Vega is not just an electric super car, it is a symbol of the magnificence of Sri Lankan engineering.

echatronics Engineering deals with the automation of mechanical systems. It integrates intelligent control and electronics into mechanical systems. Mechatronics engineers employ control theory, computer science, mathematics and sensor technology to design so called ‘smart’ products, processes and systems. Almost everywhere you look you will see a mechatronic system. For example our smart phone, GPS devices are examples of the developments in mechatronics. They are utilised in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, communication, transport, medicine, service, energy, smart farming and increasingly in advanced gaming systems. In our daily lives we use these devices. Automation requires writing computer programmes and hardware to run these programmes. Therefore, the rapid advancement of the software industry and silicon industry automation during the past two decades made mechatronics a reality. During the coming decades we will see an explosion of these automated systems further infiltrating our lives. Robots will be widely used to automate manufacturing processes for productivity benefits, quality consistency and reduction/ elimination of physically hard and/ or hazardous labour. Mobile machines, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV), will be deployed to operate in such environments. Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and components are now as small as a few microns and researchers are investigating nanotechnologies by using mechatronic systems for applications such as microscopy, nanofabrication, large data storageand sensor technologies. 1. How did your interest in Mechatronics start? I obtained by Bachelor’s in Engineering from University of Peradeniya. For my bachelor’s degree I specialized

What is

Mechatronics? in Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical engineering deals mainly with machines, refrigeration systems, energy, engines etc. That is all what we had. We learned a lot of theory. However, I wanted to put the theory into practice. I was looking for opportunities for higher studies. I wanted to get involved in a real life engineering project where I could build some useful product. I was contacted by Dr. Nicholas Krouglicofat the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada who was my PhD supervisor. He offered me a project which deals with developing a high speed robotic manipulator suitable for food processing applications such as sorting, defect removal etc. This is where I started my career in mechatronics. 2. What were some difficulties you overcame in your career? It has to do more with the education system in Sri Lanka. We always study theory. We hardly put this theory into practice. This is one of the problems that we had with our education system.

3. How well is Mechatronics accepted as a career in Sri Lanka? Mechatronics is a still a new area in Sri Lanka. Mechatronics is about automation of systems.Automation is required when labour is expensive. But that is not the case in Sri Lanka. There is a high percentage of unemployment. Labour is found cheap. However, there are cases which requires automation. For example, jobs that require precision needs automation. Also the jobs that requires hard labour or in the hazardous environments it requires to employ robots to handle these tasks. Production lines have conveyors, motors, drivers and PLCs. All the components mentioned above require Mechatronics Engineering. All production lines in Sri Lanka are semi-automated systems. Unlike in other parts of the world where these lines are fully automated. For example Fanuc is a leading manufacturer of robotic manipulators. It has factories that work around the clock using robots to build robots. In order to run these industries we need engineers, technical officers, machinists etc. All these are career prospects. 4. What is the impact of Mechatronics on the Sri Lankan economy? Currently the garment industry bringshighest export earnings. Apparel manufacturers use automation for fabric handling, tagging and identification of defective products. These companies have a research department. Their task is to carry out research to see how they could incorporate mechatronics formaking their systems more efficient and cost effective. Food industry in Sri Lanka have semi-automated production lines. They use mechatronics for defect identification, defect removal and sorting. In food industry the packaging phase is usually semi-automated. There are also a few

other companies that use robotic manipulators to handle raw material and products. 5. What avenues are available to acquire relevant qualifications in Sri Lanka? SLIIT is one of the first universities in Sri Lanka to offer a Mechatronics Engineering degree program. At SLIIT we run our mechatronics program with most up to date courses. We are also building state of the art labs to support the program by giving necessary practical exposure to the students. In addition to SLIIT there are other state and private universities who have recently started to offer mechatronics degrees. Contributions from technicians and machinists are also equally important for the industry. They perform a skilled trade. Currently we are short of good Technicians and machinists. There are avenues such as technical colleges to train personnel as technicians and machinists. These technical colleges offer various diplomas. Places like Institute of technology of University of Moratuwa, Ceylon German Technical Training Institute have modern

facilities to obtain diploma level qualifications that will cover aspects related to mechatronics. 6. How well will local qualifications be acceptable worldwide? The engineering degree programs that are being offered are accredited under the Washington accord. This gives the international recognition to these degree programs. Same applies to the other diplomas as well. These diplomas are recognised by various organizations internationally. 7. What qualities are required for youth to succeed in Mechatronics engineering? Success in any area field of study of research depends on one’s commitment, perseverance and access to the required resources. Mechatronics is a subject that requires learning by doing, since it is a very practical subject. Unlike in the past these electronic componentsand microcontrollers are cheap and readily available. This gives the everyone an opportunity to fabricate and test various microcontroller circuits and thereby learn by doing various things.

Middle East Technical University (METU) is one of Turkey’s most prestigious state universities which enjoy a world-wide reputation. METU is among the world’s “top” universities in 12 scientific subjects, according to QS World University Rankings by Subject-2016 ; thus representing Turkey in the highest number of fields. METU is also the only Turkish university included among the “Highest Group” in the international university rankings by Times Higher

Education, Webometrics, HEEACT, URAP and Leiden. In 2005 METU has established a campus in Northern Cyprus under the name Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC) with a more focused international mission. METU Northern Cyprus Campus is attached to the main campus in Ankara in all academic and administrative affairs. All degree programs of METU NCC are approved by the METU Senate, and provide the same quality standards of the main campus in Ankara. The medium of instruction at both METU campuses is English and the credit-hour system is employed. Academic Year commences in September and consists of two semesters with an optional Summer Session. Students are admitted to both Fall and Spring semesters. Duration of undergraduate study is four academic years (eight semesters) for all degree programs. Being a state university, the cost of education – even for international students- is subsidized; therefore the tuition is highly cost-effective. METU NCC is also offering attractive tuition fee scholarships (100%, 75%, 50% & 25%) for the brightest students however, they are limited and competitive.
