Tangipahoa is the place we all choose to call home, and this magazine is dedicated to celebrating some of the best things about our parish. As we do on our radio stations daily, each issue of Tangi Lifestyles celebrates our local schools, businesses, social organizations, civic groups, and people of interest. In this issue, we’ll introduce you to Southeastern Louisiana University’s new President, William Wainwright, plus we share interesting stories about umpires and ministers among us, as well as a few local business successes. We also help kick off the school year and the high school and college football seasons with team previews. We hope you enjoy!

Hughes Funeral Services is celebrating their fourth anniversary this month.  We visited with Lisa Hughes, owner/funeral director, as she reflected on the past years and the families that she and her staff have had the honor of serving.

Lisa and her husband, Harry, strive to serve with compassion and grace. “It has always been our mission to serve,” stated Lisa, “We are dedicated to making difficult times easier.”

One aspect of that is pre-planning. “We encourage our clients to make the choice to pre-plan their own funerals and memorials.  Pre-

planning relieves your loved ones of the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of the loss, at a time of grief and emotional stress,” Hughes emphasizes.

Another avenue of caring comes from their grief support group. Started in 2022, the Grief Support Group meets the second Tuesday of each month at 3:00 pm in the reception room.  All are invited to attend.

Preparations are underway for their 3rd Annual Christmas Memorial Service and Candle Lighting.  It will be held in the chapel on Sunday, December 3, 2023.  Live Christmas music begins at 1:30 pm followed by the program at 2:00 pm.

Throughout the four years, Lisa and Harry have continued to make improvements with updates to the funeral home, including exterior improvements, adding gardens and a pergola with outdoor seating, and also a new sign to welcome guests.  “We keep moving forward to ensure that families have a meaningful experience.Because at the heart of it all, family is what is important. In fact, we owe a great deal of gratitude to our family and friends who continue to offer their love, support, and a helping hand whenever needed,” stated Lisa.

Another unique touch available at LN Hughes is the one-of-akind urns they have available. A dear friend, Penny Lopez Lewis is a pour paint artist from Loranger.  Penny searches near and far for decorative containers that can be repurposed into decorative urns.  Penny Ann Spiritual Pours are on display in the funeral home and can also be special ordered for clients who would like a customized urn.

Prior to being LN Hughes Funeral Services, the building was the home of The Well UMC.  And, after a 10-month renovation, Lisa and Harry opened their doors in August 2019.

Everything seemed to come full circle in 2021 when they welcomed The Living Well Christian Church Congregation (formerly The Well UMC) to hold Sunday mornings services in the building again, and they have been celebrating with them ever since.  Doors open at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings with coffee and fellowship, followed by the Amazing Praise Band. Church services are held in the chapel of LN Hughes Funeral Services every Sunday at 10:15 a.m.  Pastor Roy Hutchinson begins each week by saying “Welcome to the Living Well Christian Church, where all are welcome and loved, and we leave the judging to Christ.”

Lisa joined Tangipahoa Professional Women’s Organization in 2019 and has enjoyed meeting other women in the organization and attending the motivational monthly luncheons.  In 2021, she was appointed as public relations chair.  She served as 20222023 President-Elect and Scholarship Chair, and recently, Lisa was sworn in as the 2023-2024 TPW President.  She is a board member of Women Mean Business and is very excited about the upcoming events being planned.

Hanging in Lisa’s office are two signs that mean a great deal to her.  They simply read “Do good and good will come to you” and “She believed she could, so she did.”

Every year, clients of The Exnicios Group at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Preferred Realtors, eagerly await the arrival of an invitation to what can be considered the event of the year. The yearly get togethers are the brainchild of John Exnicios who is the operating partner of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Preferred Realtors and the Team Leader of the Exnicios Group. In a business where major financial decisions and investments are made, Exnicios finds it important to create these experiences for his clients.

With each event being as unpredictable as the last, attendees can always expect one thing – a fun experience. Previous years have included a Mardi Gras Ball featuring the Rebirth Brass Band and local artist Terrance Osborne, and a Great Gatsby house party complete with the Swinging Gypsies and professional Lindy Hop dancers.

This year’s event did not disappoint, with a family-oriented party held at Cate Square Park. Laughter could be heard throughout the day as families enjoyed great food, live music by Will Vance and the Kinfolk, face painting, and even a bounce house for the young and young-at-heart.

John explained that it is important to get to know someone on a personal level outside of the transactions of work, and these events help to do just that. “I want people to have fun in life. It’s not always about the work,” Exnicios said. “If you’re having fun, you get to know people better.”

Building a personal relationship with clients is important to The Exnicios Group. It enables their clients to be confident that the team will have their best interest at heart throughout the buying and selling process.

One such client is Dr. Jeffery Franco, a Hammond chiropractor. Dr. Franco has known John for over 20 years and considers him like family. “He helped me buy my first house, my current house, and even the office I am currently working out of.”

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Pastors Deidre Allen and Marissa Horvath are both women leading congregations in Tangipahoa Parish. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with each of them and learn what led them to accept their current roles. Each has felt a calling to serve the community, to lead by example, and in doing so, to show that it is possible to pursue roles that may be considered uncommon.

PASTOR MARISSA HORVATH

“It takes all types of people to do all types of jobs, and this is no different,” said Pastor Marissa Horvath, First United Methodist Church of Hammond.

In her regular schedule at FUMC, Pastor Horvath can be found leading Sunday worship, Bible studies throughout the week, running the church and preschool, and most importantly, visiting with the people of her community.

“I think offering a comfortable, safe place is the most important part for me,” Pastor Horvath said. “I enjoy getting to know people. Being treated like family and treating them like family, knowing that we can lean on and grow with each other — I would say that makes it most worth it.”

With this being the first time Pastor Horvath is solo leading a church, she is fully aware that she is representing women who wish to serve in roles that could be considered uncommon in their communities.

“It is unique being a female pastor and being the only pastor in a church,” she said. “The takeaway is that I’m just like everybody else, and I just want to care for and welcome people.”

Pastor Horvath has been married to her husband, Ted, for almost three years. Together they share a dog named Biloxi and have recently welcomed their first-born child.

Now, currently on maternity leave, the new mother believes female pastors can offer a new perspective for the entire congregation.

“People who may not have felt represented by the church in the past can relate to someone who reminds them of a sister, a daughter, a mother. Someone who can make a place and experience more comfortable,” Pastor Horvath said. “That in itself is a great asset.”

The Pastor believes women who are considering going down a similar path as herself should have no doubts.

“They can bring something that other people can’t bring, even other female pastors,” Pastor Horvath said. “Each of us has gifts and talents that God has gifted us with that they can bring to the position.”

PASTOR DEIDRE ALLEN

Pastor Diedre Allen of First United Methodist Church of Ponchatoula started her early adult life as a registered nurse, telling people she went into a different kind of healing ministry.

“I grew up in an era in Mississippi where women weren’t clergy. In my late teens, when I was graduating from high school, I thought about being a pastor, but there wasn’t someone I could resonate with,” Pastor Allen said. “All the pastors and clergy I knew were men.”

After raising her three kids, Allen wanted to find her next life calling. She started attending church again and got involved

in a ministry of feeding people at a food pantry. From there, she naturally progressed into joining the seminary.

Experiencing doubts and discouragement is common for women in a male-dominated ministry, but Pastor Allen believes that persistence can overcome any hardships one can experience.

“I think women bring a unique perspective that men can’t,” Pastor Allen said. “If it’s something you feel called to do and have a passion for, press on. When times get hard, surround yourself with people that are supportive,” she continued.

For those journeying down a similar path, she shared her favorite Bible passage: “For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 26:11.

“I love that passage because it’s available to everybody, and as we journey together as a faith community, I think that’s where we find those things.”

FUMC of Ponchatoula’s mission statement: “We are a church of faithful Christians called to serve God in this community through worship, witness, and work” embodies what she stands for as a pastor.

“Walking beside people, especially during difficult times, but during joyful times, too, is what I love most about ministry,” she said.

Heading into the 2023 season Southeastern Louisiana University is ranked 11th in the Athlon Sports FCS Pre-Season Poll. Since taking over as head coach of the Lions in 2018, Frank Scelfo promised a team that would be able to compete nationally and a team that would be consistent in that effort. In 2022 fans got to see the culmination of that promise. After coming up short in several previous attempts, Coach Scelfo delivered the first of what figures to be many Southland Conference Championships.

Make no mistake about it, Southeastern has been good enough to win in each of the last four seasons, finishing in the top 25 every year, an accomplishment only two other programs in the country can stake claim to. 2022 wasn’t a miracle year among the pedestrian, it was just the year that the talent, depth, and coaching all reached their peak in unison to bring home the hardware. Coach Scelfo has amassed a 34-23 record while going 25-13 in the Southland Conference in his first five seasons in Hammond.

Circling back to Coach Scelfo’s promise of national notoriety for this program; being ranked 11th heading into the season, the highest of any Southland Conference team, shows the rest of the country has learned what Lions fans have known for a few years. Under Frank Scelfo, Southeastern is a team you can count on being a part of post-season discussions year in and year out. Southeastern made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons, only missing in the abbreviated spring season of 2021 by one game. Additionally, the Lions have been lethal when playing in Strawberry Stadium since 2018 going 16-6, with a perfect 3-0 record in playoff games played in Hammond.

The last piece to being a nationally viable program is contending for a National Championship. Each of Southeastern’s playoff appearances have gone the same, a big win at home followed by a tough loss on the road in round two. Last year, however felt different. In 2019 Southeastern fell 78-23 to Montana, in 2021 James Madison handled the Lions 59-20, and in both games Southeastern looked like they didn’t belong on the same field as the FCS elite. Last year, it was a nail-biting, tough over-time loss on the road at #8 Samford. Beyond the score being closer, there was just a different look, a team that belonged. The same team that also gave eventual National Semi-finalist Incarnate Word their lone loss in the regular season.

So, as we get ready for the birth of a new season, expect a team that will contend for a repeat of Southland Conference champions. Expect a team that will contend for a home Playoff game, with hopes to get past the 2nd round. Perhaps we’ll even see a team do what the North Dakota, Appalachian State, and South Dakotas of the FCS have done with regularity. Take down an FBS program enroute to making a statement for the nation to see. Southeastern kicks off the 2023 season on the road in Starkville, Mississippi on September 2nd against Mississippi State.

ALBANY Hornets AMITE Warriors

Last season was not only Legoria’s first as Head Coach of Albany but first as a head football coach period. Our 2022 edition mentioned Legoria had one main objective being to bring back pride and fun to the game of football. Well, a winning season and trip to the playoffs did just that for the Hornets in 2022. Competition will be tough as ever in Class 3A’s District 7, but don’t count out the Hornets from another hopeful playoff run in 2023.

Success is just measured differently in Warrior Country. Coach Powell’s Warriors had a losing record in District play for the first time in his tenure in 2022, however that didn’t stop Amite from yet another winning season overall, and a run to the Semi-Finals of Non-Select Division 3. Years and Championships come and go, but count on Amite being a part of that conversation.

ARE YOU READY?

A plant doesn’t simply grow over night. Well, maybe slightly, but it’s a much longer process as a whole where signs of growth can be noted. Coach Buckels and the Tornadoes are seemingly now all but ready to bloom. Each leaf and flower bud has taken time to get here but coming off his first playoffs appearance, Buckels will now look to bring Hammond High a winning season for the first time since 2018.

Head Coach: Travis Mikel

Travis Mikel is the new head football coach for Independence and thus a new era has commenced for the Tigers. Mikel spent time as an assistant coach with Southeastern Louisiana University and Ponchatoula among his previous stops. Mikel officially took over in July, so expectations should be tempered for the firstyear head coach, but look for Independence to form a formidable offensive line in the years to come as Mikel leans on upbringing as an AllAmerican-level Center.

The Cowboys have made the playoffs three straight years, while 3A’s District 7 has slowly become one of the toughest districts in all of Louisiana. Sumner looks to find their new star players after moving on from an incredibly talented senior class a year ago. Even in what may appear to be a transitional phase, "The Hole" in Tangipahoa remains one of the hardest places to win for opposing teams.

ARE YOU READY?

It was a return to form for the Kangaroos in 2022 losing two games all season including the playoffs by a combined 14 points. Although a first-round exit in the playoffs was disappointing, a 9-1 regular season campaign in their return to 1A has Kentwood looking right back to State Championship aspirations. Look for Kentwood to try and get back to the State title game for the first time since 2018.

LORANGER Wolves

Head Coach: Sammy Messina

Three consecutive losing seasons following a 10-0 run in 2019 may have some on edge in Wolves Country, but Sammy Messina has proven over his career that he knows how to rebuild a winner. Appearing frequently on Tangi 96.5’s Under The Hood show, Messina has reiterated that building a championship caliber team takes time, and if you look at more than just the win-loss record, you’ll see the foundation laid for what should be a return to winning ways for Loranger in 2023.

OAK FOREST Yellow Jackets

Head Coach: Drew Misita

Fresh from the high of a state championship, Oak Forest comes into 2023 looking to do the only thing tougher than winning it all, doing it again. Oak Forest has now entered into the same territory as Amite in the LHSAA. Perennial contenders to lift up their division’s title, and one of the elite programs in the MAIS.

Green Wave

Head Coach: Trey Willie

Trey Willie enters year two as head coach of the Green Wave after a learning experience for all in 2022. A senior-heavy team in 2021 went undefeated in their run to state runner-up, then those seniors graduated and a new head coach was named. An even win-loss record and first round exit from the playoffs may have been a step down from the year prior, but look for it to be just a stepping stone for Willie on his way to building the next great Ponchatoula team.

SPRINGFIELD Bulldogs ST. HELENA Hawks

Head Coach: Ryan Serpas

Springfield made the playoffs in 2021 and looked on the fast track to repeating that a year ago after starting the season 3-0. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the bad breaks just kept coming one after the other from that point on. A new year is a fresh start and an opportunity to overcome and learn from setbacks of the past. Look for a rebound from Coach Serpas as the Bulldogs look to get back into the playoffs in 2023.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Falcons

Head Coach: Shane Mulhern

In his first year as head coach for the Hawks' Gordon brought the Hawks back to the playoffs after missing them in 2021. Things were looking rough in September after an 0-4 start, but St. Helena turned around to win their next four before splitting their final two games of the regular season. A strong end to the season, including a firstround victory in the playoffs over South Plaquemines, has St. Helena looking a lot closer to the team that finished state runner-up in 2017 than they have in a long time.

Shane Mulhern is a newcomer to the area, but his knowledge and coaching resume rivals that of a man twice his age. When you take over a program, which routinely has won district championships and is a mainstay in the playoffs, many fans hope there will be no hiccups in the transition to a new regime. Jimmy Travis and his wife, Patty Benton-Travis, have called Tangipahoa Parish home for decades. After earning 30 years of law enforcement experience and demonstrating a strong commitment to his home parish, Jimmy has earned the job of Sheriff.

Jimmy and Patty both graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and have spent their careers in public service. Patty, a firstgrade teacher at Champ Cooper, entered the education field when she realized so many adults were struggling because they did not know how to read.

“Patty spends days and nights dedicating time to her life’s mission,” Jimmy said. “Our careers align when it comes to what’s best for this parish and the people we call neighbors, family and friends. We agree

A CONCERN FOR POVERTY

As the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Chief of Operations, Jimmy understands that education is key to helping curb poverty in Tangipahoa Parish, and that less poverty will help lower crime rates.

“When people feel there is no other way, they become desperate,” he says. “And that leads to destructive decisions. I am determined to continue working with the school system to ensure children take advantage of the current literacy program and grow into productive and successful adults. That’s what it will take to keep Tangipahoa Parish safe––children who know there are opportunities achieved through education.”

While education is a priority, Jimmy warns that mental health issues have become a problem nationwide and that no one is exempt from consequences stemming from the mental health crisis. Whether it’s the one experiencing the crisis or those who love them, these issues can threaten families and present public safety concerns.

“Proper law enforcement response is critical when responding to calls involving mental health issues,” Jimmy said. “Our officers go through annual mandatory mental health response training, but I want to require more specific training to ensure our response is compassionate and employs proper de-escalation techniques.”

The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 1 in 5 American adults experience the effects of mental illness every year, and the National Institutes of Health states those individuals are more likely to be victims of crime rather than perpetrators.

“Understanding that people with mental illness often just need some help is what the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputies already know,” he said. "And I need to make sure they are trained to get these individuals to a safe place where they can get the help they need.”

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT

In addition to proper response, deputies deserve the latest in technology and equipment. Jimmy has worked to secure grant funding for transportation, protection, and solving cases.

have the proper equipment to protect themselves and their fellow law enforcement officers,” he said. “When they come to work, we want to make sure they return safely to their families. We owe these professionals proper training and tools to do their jobs so they have the best chance to do that.”

RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

Finally, retaining law enforcement professionals is paramount to Jimmy’s success as the next Sheriff. While recruitment is important as well, Jimmy says retention and re-recruitment will be essential.

“We often are a training ground for deputies to move to other agencies,” he said. “We must pay our officers better, provide them advancement opportunities, and have an attractive benefits package. The people of Tangipahoa Parish need officers who want to begin their careers here and retire here.”

Jimmy said that this effort will create a legacy of career deputies who understand this parish and can build a body of knowledge for our Sheriff’s Department that will last for decades to come. “I will consider it my best accomplishment when I create a Sheriff’s Office that attracts officers who come to train here, and then stay to protect the same people they share neighborhoods with,” he continued. “The TPSO will be the agency where deputies want to spend their careers. I’ll make sure of that.”

Collegiate umpires Eddie Newsom and Laura King both agree that this career path is a real game changer.

In a tight-knit community, it is easy to believe you have everyone figured out -- their careers, families, and hobbies. You know where you can find them shopping or eating Sunday Brunch. But we’ve discovered there are hidden gems in our community. Eddie Newsom and Laura King, a sales rep and teacher, respectively. Both have a second career in the public’s eye, yet they’re hidden in plain sight. In fact, you’ve probably seen them and have not realized their true identity.

EDDIE NEWSOM

For as long as he could remember, Eddie Newsom played baseball. Instead of retiring from the field and joining the stands when his playing time came to an end, he discovered a way to remain on the field. He became an umpire. He began his journey in 1997 and has just completed his 26th year as a college baseball umpire, with over 1,800 games under his belt.

The father of two and husband to wife Dee Dee spends his week working his job of 24 years at Quikrete in Hammond. On Friday, he’s on a plane, traveling to the designated location of the ball game he is umpiring that weekend. On Sunday night, he’s on a plane back home, just in time for work on Monday.

“I can’t do anything fun for a few months. It’s a juggling act,” Eddie Newsom said, “but it’s worth it. It started off as a hobby. Now I fit it into my work.”

Eddie has reached many milestones throughout his career, but he isn’t stopping until he achieves his ultimate goal. “It’s the chase for Omaha,” Eddie said. “It’s no different than the teams. It’s the only thing on my list I haven’t gotten yet.” In fact, he has a game ball collection that he keeps in a pyramid shadow box, and theoretically, there are only a couple of spaces left to fill before he gets to his Omaha goal.

Through traveling the world and interacting with top players and sports influencers, Eddie has had the opportunity to advance his knowledge of the game in unique ways. He has officiated games both in the United States and in other countries such as the Netherlands, South Korea, and Japan. “The regional cultures influence the way the players and staff interact during the game, and it is meaningful to be a part of that,” Newsom continued. He has saved the umpire sheet

from every game since the start of his career as mementos. He was quick to point out that some of the greatest players to play the game are within those pages.

Travel is the best and also the hardest part. “There are sacrifices, to each their own, but being away from your family is the biggest sacrifice. It’s important that I dedicate the time I am away to being the best I can be, representing not only my family, but my friends, town, conference, and myself.”

When asked what makes him successful in his career, Eddie replied, “The key to success in umpiring is having a strong understanding of the rules of the game and being able to apply them fairly and consistently.” “Umpires must also be able to remain calm and impartial in all situations while having the ability to make quick and accurate decisions.”

While Eddie keeps this part of his life quiet, he uses the skills he’s developed on the field, confidence, focus, and common sense, throughout his life here in Tangipahoa Parish.

LAURA KING

Local teacher, Laura King, is a Hammond High graduate, girls’ basketball coach, and mother of two. Her hands are full already, but after making a bet just a few years ago, she found herself beginning a new career as a college official.

Upon watching a friend of hers officiate, she jokingly bet him that she could do a better job. “He told me they needed people, so I went out there and did it,” Laura King said. “And I instantly fell in love with it.”

Since then, Laura has officiated not only high school sports but college conferences such as the Sunbelt, Southland, Big 10, and Big 12.

“I have always loved sports and had I’d been coaching for 8 years before I started officiating. You have different perspectives as a coach, and it translates into being a good official,” King said.

For Laura, her experience has been different than the others in her field. “It’s really just word of mouth,” she said. “One person watches

me work, they spread the message – suddenly I’m in multiple college tournaments, back-to-back.”

In fact, after only two years, she was presented with the huge opportunity to officiate the Oklahoma State and Florida State softball game. What takes many years to accomplish, Laura has been able to do in record time.

When asked what her favorite part is, she replied that nothing beats working with people.

“Seeing the players, knowing what they go through, and having the ability to see it from a different side,” Laura said. “I know I will go out there and give them a game that they deserve. It might not always be perfect, but it will always be a fair game.”

Laura may have started out with more opportunities than her peers, but it is her hard work and consistent performance that have made her so successful. When asked where she sees herself at the pinnacle of her performance, she replied, “Eventually, making it to the College World Series is a dream of mine. I’m sure it’s everybody’s hope at some point. I have the desire, the want, the backing, and the mentors to get me where I want to go.”

Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, Inc. (CST) is a non-profit organization that provides crime prevention to the citizens of Tangipahoa and St. Helena Parishes. Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa first originated in 1983 as an all-volunteer-run organization. The organization had its ups and downs. Post-Katrina, the Hammond Chamber of Commerce Community Development Committee, and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reorganized to become Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa, by hiring an Executive Director and forming a Board of Directors in 2007. A new aggressive approach to solving crimes began. Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa is currently managed by Michelle Gallo, Executive Director, and David Tucker, Community Outreach Coordinator.

What does Crime Stoppers do?

Crime Stoppers is a partnership of the community, law enforcement, and the media which provides the community with a proactive program for people to report anonymous tips and assist law enforcement in solving crimes. CST offers cash rewards to anyone furnishing anonymous information that leads to the arrest of criminals, including those committing serious felony crimes and fugitives. Tips are received through the 800 number, website, or the P3 App. Each tipster is assigned a code number for the purpose of ensuring anonymity.

Since 2008, Crime Stoppers has received over 10,283 tips, assisted in 2,163 arrests, cleared 2,750 cases, and paid over $246,700 in rewards.

How does it work?

Submit tips by calling 800.554.5245 or tangicrimestoppers.com and click “Submit a Tip” or download the P3 APP. Law enforcement investigates the tip. If the tip leads to an arrest, or provides information on a case, a cash reward is offered to the tipster anonymously.

Crime Stoppers is hard at work in Tangipahoa by providing crime prevention programs, Safe School Initiative - Student Anonymous Hotline, presenting suicide prevention programs for teens, offering female self-defense classes instructed by Sensi Frank DiBenedetto, instructing neighborhood watch programs, and hosting free community events. CST is in partnership with SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), TADAC ( Tangipahoa Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council) and TRACC ( Tangipahoa Reshaping Attitudes for Community Change).

Although Crime Stoppers of Tangipahoa receives allocated funding from parish court fees to pay rewards to tipsters, Crime Stoppers is a 501©3 non-profit corporation primarily funded by individual donations, civil non-profit organizations, and fundraisers.

In 2022, with the support of Anntoine Marketing and Design, Crime Stoppers presented the first murder mystery, “Wine and Crime” Fundraiser.

It was such a huge success, the murder this year will be on September 29th, at Anntoine’s beautiful offices at 113 S Pine Street in Hammond. This year’s theme is “Murder at the Luau.” There will be a lineup of eight suspects wanted for questioning. Murder at the Luau will keep attendees guessing who done it while they are entertained with music, food and a killer cocktail. Participants will have a chance to win door prizes if they can shake down the suspects for clues.

Upon completion of the program, participants will have learned principles of public speaking, be able to demonstrate behaviors that influence and inspire others, and be able to apply those skills for their own personal and professional development.

Mandi Aguillard, VP/HR Recruiting Manager and 2022 Emerging Leader Graduate reflected on her time in the program, “If we were to get anything out of the course, we had to be very vulnerable.”

“Each person walks away with something different depending on what phase of life they’re in, what phase of their career, their experience level,” said Vikki Dupaquier.

Brianna Lowe, Branch Manager of the downtown Hammond branch and 2022 Emerging Leader Graduate said, “I wish everyone could truly experience the leadership program because it’s that great. If I could go through it again, I would and I would repeatedly because it was that fulfilling.”

“Mary did an excellent job,” stated Mandi Aguillard. “I loved every minute of it. She expected a lot out of us and because of that, I feel like I grew a lot.”

Several managers have called Mary Mayo to thank her throughout the program’s duration. “They (managers) have seen positive improvement and changes from the moment their employees stepped into the program,” she said.

With two employees in the program, one current and one recently graduated, Colton McDaniel, VP/Credit Officer/Credit Department Manager knows the value of this program. “The Emerging Leader Program caters and does things a little bit differently than other programs. Specifically, they do have to teach to a group, but different people get different things out of it,” he said. He nominates his employees for the program when he feels like they’re at a launching point in their career and need to reach the next level.

Mikki Kelley, SVP and Human Resources Manager, has also benefited from an employee going through the Emerging Leader Program. “Through the Emerging Leader Program, I’ve witnessed Mandi’s confidence skyrocket and her becoming the very best version of herself. Her personality and her actions define leadership, being fanatical and most importantly, define who we are at FGB.”

The new President of Southeastern Louisiana University, Dr. William Wainwright, is a native of Broussard, Louisiana. He and his wife, Misty, are the proud parents of Zachary (21) and Ella Grace (18). He and his family have resided on the Northshore for the past 25 years. Aside from dedicating each day to ensuring Southeastern Louisiana University thrives, here are Dr. Wainwright’s 5 Favorite Things:

Fishing:

Dr. Wainwright spent his childhood fishing and water skiing in the Atchafalaya Basin. Today, he enjoys freshwater and saltwater fishing with his family. His favorite place to fish is the Rigolets.

Family Vacation:

Being with his wife and children on vacation is special for many reasons. Some of his favorite vacations involve traveling abroad and being close to the water.

Hiking:

Health and fitness are important to the family and hiking combines both vacation and exercise. Favorite hiking trails include the Smoky Mountains and Sedona, Arizona.

Cooking:

Taught by his Cajun grandmother, specialties include shrimp etouffee, crawfish bisque, chicken and sausage gumbo, and deviled eggs!

Having a son engaged in athletics and a daughter in the arts, his family has attended MANY Southeastern athletic games and arts performances at various venues.
