Celebrating Halloween with friends and family is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. But for some, the idea of hosting the tricks and treats of a Halloween party may seem far too terrifying on the budget. With Christmas just around the corner and budgets already tight, it’s understandable to be more concerned with ensuring that you have enough to buy gifts for all your loved ones. Throwing a spooky bash doesn’t have to cost much at all! Here are some great – and not so scary – ways to throw a festive Halloween party on a budget: 1. Ask people to wear costumes. Half the fun of attending a Halloween party is checking out what everyone put together to wear. If you have to skimp on decorations, don’t worry! Costumes are a great way to still create a festive holiday atmosphere that doesn’t cost you a dime! 2. Send out an email invite. Unless you’re having a formal affair, there’s no reason to waste money on paper invitations anymore. Sites like Facebook and Evite make it easy to contact all of your friends and gather RSVPs for events – for free. 3. Make it a potluck. Encourage

people to bring spooky foods. You can even send them a list of suggestions or sites where they can do their own searching. 4. Make it a late night affair. To avoid having to feed people a full meal, plan a party for after dinner. That way you can just serve a few inexpensive appetizers, such as chips, dip, pretzels, veggie trays, and nuts. You can also leave out some Halloween candy. 5. Wait until the last minute to shop. Halloween items generally go on sale on October 31st. The stores don’t want to hold onto the stuff until next year, so sometimes the discounts can be steep. If you are having your party on the day of or the weekend after, then hold off on your shopping trip a little longer. 6. Head to the dollar store. If your party is before Halloween or you just can’t wait, then the best place to find spooky table clothes, plates, napkins, cups, and more is at your local dollar store. 7. Play a scary movie. Need some fun ambience? Throw a classic horror film on in the background. You can leave the sound on for added spooky thrills or just have the See Party Page 17 WWW.EDIBLESMAG.COM • 5

Bring Tailgating Home BY FAMILY FEATURES

Football. Parking Lots. Grilled food. Three unmistakable signs that a new season is here – tailgate season. But things are changing. More people are tailgating at home. Those changes are being driven by economics, a desire to be with more friends and to extend the game day party. Season ticket sales for professional sports have dropped more than 47 percent since 2005, according to a study from Tailgater Magazine. The research also found that in the last 10 years, the average ticket price for a professional football game has risen more than 50 percent and parking fees have doubled. “We’re seeing that homeowners want to bring everyone over for the game, rather than go anywhere,” said Matt Hillebrand, principal of Don’s Appliances in Pittsburgh. It’s a trend some are calling “homegating.” Kick off with the grill Food makes or breaks a homegate. Get the grill off the sidelines. So many times the grill is in a corner, but that takes the host out of the game. “Keep the grill close to the action,”

said Russ Faulk, grillmaster for Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet. “That way, the cook can talk with guests during the game.” As for the menu, Faulk recommends individual-sized appetizers – like sliders and mini tacos. (recipe on page 13) Mix it up at halftime Fire pits, smokers and pizza ovens make the party more interactive for guests, Hillebrand said. Pizza ovens get your guests involved in the cooking, Faulk said. Some companies, such as Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, offer countertop versions. When the weather gets cooler, fire pits offer a place to warm up while watching the game outdoors. They also create opportunities for more activities, like making s’mores. Headed to overtime Let’s not forget the reason for the homegate: the game. Specialized TVs are made to stand up to the weather and keep the gang outdoors, simulating the stadium experience. For a more budget-friendly option, tune in through wireless Bluetooth speakers that extend the call of the game to all corners of the yard.

Candice Glover showing community support at The Cancer Thrift Store of Beaufort BY CHAUNDRA WHITE

Beaufort’s own American Idol, Candice Glover, is big on community service and giving back to her hometown. Recently she stopped by The Cancer Thrift Store of Beaufort, a local nonprofit, to volunteer and learn more about what the organization does. The Cancer Thrift Store of Beaufort is a 501(c) 3 organization on a mission to help local cancer patients and their families in their fight against cancer. The organization has only been in operation for one year, but their Director, Anthony Stokes, says they have had a lot of support from the community. “We wouldn’t be able to achieve our mission without the support of our customers, volunteers, and others who donate items to the store.”

Stokes said. “We are very grateful.” Ms. Glover heard about the good things the organization has been doing from a friend and decided to

check it out herself. Ms. Glover volunteered by working with staff to organize donations the store had received.

“Catching the eye of a busy person like Ms. Glover is a great sign that we are doing something right.” Stokes said. In its short existence, the Cancer Thrift Store of Beaufort has already supported several local cancer patients by helping pay household bills and medical costs. “People often forget about the financial and emotional costs that can affect the success of a cancer patient’s treatment. We hope to See Cancer Thrift Store page 17 WWW.EDIBLESMAG.COM • 7

Mini Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls

Recipe and photo by Six Sisters Stuff www.sixsistersstuff.com Ingredients Cinnamon Rolls 2 Pillsbury Seamless Dough Sheets ½ cup pumpkin puree 4 oz cream cheese softened Cinnamon Brown Sugar Frosting: 4 oz cream cheese softened 2 Tablespoons butter softened 1½ cups powdered sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Instructions To Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spread Pillsbury Creation sheets flat. In a bowl, mix together 4 oz cream cheese and pumpkin puree. Spread mixture over both Pillsbury Sheets

in an even layer. You may not use all of the pumpkin mixture. Sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar over pumpkin mixture until most of the dough is covered. Carefully roll each sheet into jellyroll shape. Using floss, or serrated knife, carefully cut into ¾ inch sized slices. Each sheet should make about 10 cinnamon rolls. Place cinnamon rolls into greased 8x8 pan or combine both rolls in a 9x13 and cook for 16 minutes or until tops turn golden brown. Frosting: Beat together cream cheese, softened butter, vanilla, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Spread over cinnamon rolls after they cool. Enjoy!

Spooky Witches’ Fingers

Recipe by Sandra Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup whole almonds 1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel Instructions: Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed

paper to roll the dough into a thin fingershaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie.

Berry Nutty Choco Pie Recipe by Cindy Male www.cindymale.com

Ingredients:

8 oz of whipped cream (dream or cool whip) 4 oz of cream cheese 3/4 C peanut butter 1/4 C Hershey’s Chocolate Spread (I use Nocciolata organic hazelnut spread with cocoa and milk. Nutella would work as well) strawberries Beat the first two ingredients and then add the p’butter and choco. Put this mixture into an already baked and cooled pie crust of your choice. Circle the sliced strawberries

from the outside to the inside and scatter the blueberries intermittently The original recipe called for a cup of confectionery sugar. I added none as the ingredients already have sugar in them. Everyone seemed to like it just as it was, with no sugar! If the strawberries are not as sweet as you like them, sprinkle the finished pie lightly with coconut sugar. All the Best!

Kalamazoo Sliders Recipe by family Features Ingredients:

1 red onion extra virgin olive oil fine sea salt 4 pretzel rolls, about 3 inches in diameter 1 pound (15 percent lean) ground beef 4 ounces Cambozola cheese, cut into chunks 4 cocktail skewers Instructions: Prepare the grill for direct grilling over high heat, about 700 F grill grate temperature. Slice red onion into 3/4-inch thick slices. Oil both sides and season with salt. Reserve. Slice pretzel rolls. On dessert plate, pour oil and dip cut sides of each roll to coat evenly. Season oiled side with salt. Reserve. Form ground beef into patties 1-inch larger in diameter than rolls and about 3/4inch thick. Recess center of patties so when burgers plump, they will turn out flat. Brush each patty on all sides with olive oil

and season with salt. Grill onion slices until translucent and soft, about 10 minutes. Remove from grill, break slices down into rings and reserve. Grill beef patties, turning once, 3-4 minutes per side. Flip patties, adding large ring of onion to each patty. Add small ring or two of onion inside larger ring. Add cheese on top of onion. While cheese is melting and bottom of patties are cooking, lightly grill rolls. Gently remove burgers when done and transfer directly onto pretzel rolls. Skewer each burger.

relieve some of that stress so patients can focus less on bills and more on beating cancer.” Stokes said. The Cancer Thrift Store of Beaufort has teamed up with another local nonprofit to offer prosthetics, such as hair pieces and wigs, to cancer patients at no cost. The organization’s youth committee has developed programs that help educate the community, especially youth, about cancer. They’ve secured materials about the different kinds of cancer, preventative measures, and how to support those affected by the disease. Ms. Glover applauded the great work the organization does. “The Cancer Thrift Store of Beaufort
