September Oaks Vineyards is a little known gem located in Ridgeland SC. Courtesy of September Oaks Vineyards
The quaint boutique winery, owned by Grady and Evie Woods, opened in 2010. As you enter the drive of this picturesque property, you are enthralled with the majestic live oaks that line the drive. The 10 acre property includes 2 acres planted with grapes; one acre is dedicated to muscadine grapes( both white and red muscadine), and the other acre is dedicated to a French - American hybrid named Lenoir which was introduced to the Low Country by the French Huguenots in the mid 1700’s. The winery offers tastings Tuesday - Saturday from 11 am - 6 pm. Tastings cost either $11. for a tasting of all six wines and includes a souvenir glass, or $6 for a tasting of any four wines ( no glass). The goal of the winery is to have a wine to suit any taste. The current lineup includes three dry wines, two semi-sweet wines and a sweet dessert style wine. The new husband and wife General Manager team, Ted and Louisa Videki, came to the Low Country from the emerging North Georgia wine region. Their belief is that wine tasting need not be intimidating. Louisa and Ted invite you to visit for a fun and educational wine tasting. Ted has two credentials in the wine industry (CSW and WSET Certified ), and both have extensive training in wine and food pairing. For a more in-dept understanding of the wine making process, schedule a tour of the vineyard and winery on Saturday at 12:30 pm. The tour includes a full tasting, artisan meat and cheese platter, and a souvenir glass. The cost is $25. per person and the tour lasts approximately 2 hours. Also, the winery has live music every Saturday afternoon from 2-5 pm. Lunches are also now offered on Saturdays. For a list of upcoming winery events, visit us at www.septemberoaks.com, or call the tasting room at (843)726-9463, or like us on Facebook. The tasting room is located at 893 Grays Highway only 1 and half miles from I- 95. ‘Remember “we are closer than you think”.

Gullah Festival Highlights Home Grown Talent
By Chaundra Stokes-White
The Sumitra Red’s breakout performance as a soloist will take place appropriately during this year’s Gullah Festival. Why appropriately? Because Beaufort’s deep rooted Gullah culture is engrained into Sumitra. She grew up surrounded by the rich melodies, storytelling, foods, and people that make up the culture. After discovering her voice and love for music, Sumitra began to incorporate the Gullah culture into her writing, singing and performing as a member of the world-renown group, “Marlena Smalls and The Hallelujah Singers.” Sumitra’s mother, Marlena Smalls founded The Hallelujah Singers in 1990 to preserve the unique Gullah culture of the South Carolina Sea Islands. As part of The Hallelujah Singers, Sumitra traveled the world as a Gullah ambassador, teaching and entertaining in schools and auditoriums. With the group, she performed for the U. S. Congress, South Carolina legislature, in Chicago’s Ravinia festivals, at the Kennedy Center, the Spoleto Festival and the G-8 Summit. Over the last two years, Sumitra has established herself as a solo artist, performing Neo-Soul, Jazz, Reggae, and R&B in various venues across the state. She combines the passion and energy that she honed over the years as part of The Hallelujah singers with her own

sultry and jazzy style. Her renditions of My Funny Valentine, Chain of Fools, and Let’s Stay Together have garnered Sumitra a large following of music lovers. Sumitra also writes and performs original music such as Everything’s Alright and her debut single Love Him,
which is available on iTunes. Sumitra Red is on a mission to uplift and energize the world by sharing her love of music, culture, and her Godgiven talent. She is especially proud to give back to the people of Beaufort, a city that has given so much to her. Sumitra Red (Sumitra Stewart McGhee) performs at the 29th Original Gullah Festival Saturday, May 23.
Celebrate “Memorial Day On Da’ Island” Gallery artist’s works will portray Gullah People Celebrating “Decoration Day” now referred to as “Memorial Day”. Chef Talk
Cooking The Gullah Way By Ruth Ragland Associate Editor
Daufuskie cooking diva Sallie Ann Robinson is busier than ever these days with a radio show, a new cookbook in the works and catering events for fans of her Gullah cuisine. “I have many irons in my fire right now,” she laughs. Now living in Savannah, Robinson has set her sights on a local cooking show done by a native that would feature Gullah food. “A restaurant ties you to a kitchen,” she said, explaining why she hasn’t opened one herself. “My way of cooking is easy — we didn’t have a lot.” She will come to your home or any place of choice as long as it has a kitchen, and cook for 15 people or more for dinner parties, family reunions, book clubs or other events. Robinson grew up on Daufuskie Island and was a student of novelist Pat Conroy when he taught there. When she published her first cookbook in 2003, “Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way,” he wrote the forward. She followed that up with “Cooking the

Gullah Way, Morning, Noon, & Night” in 2007. Some of her favorite dishes include Smuttered shrimp and grits, Ol’ ‘fuskie fried crab rice, collard greens with baked turkey wings and blackberry dumplings. “These are oldfashioned dishes that people get the full flavor of, cooked with a lot of love,” she said. Another treat she enjoys making is her pecan crunch cookie. She loves to give them out as an introduction to her Gullah home cooking or as thank you gifts. Which you can find the recipe in her second book. People ask for the cookie so often that she’s taking orders by email at mygullah@yahoo.com. You can also reach Chef Sallie Ann Robinson at 912-604-8210 for orders or question.

Vegetable stock 7 shallots, thinly sliced 1/4 cup onion chopped thinly 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 inch ginger finely chopped 2 tablespoon canola oil/ vegetable oil 1 egg 3/4 cup frozen peas and carrots 1/3 cup Cashews 1/4 teaspoon salt or to taste. 3 tablespoon fresh coriander (cilantro) Stir fry sauce 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon oyster sauce 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder* 1/4 teaspoon chili powder* 1/4 teaspoon coriander powder* 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder* * if you don’t have turmeric, chili, cumin and coriander powder use curry powder. Directions Cut pineapple in half, Scoop out the flesh and cut into 1 inch dice. Mix 1 Tbsp. oil with the one old rice, using your fingers to separate any chunks into grains. Set aside. In a cup, stir the Soy sauce, worcestershire
sauce and oyster sauce, to this added cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric and red chili powder with 3 tablespoon of vegetable stock. Drizzle Tbsp. oil in a wok/large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add shallots, garlic, ginger and onion, stir-frying until fragrant (1 minute). Whenever the wok/pan becomes dry, add a little sauce (1/2 Tbsp. at a time to keep the pan sizzling). Crack the egg into wok and stir quickly to cook (like making scrambled eggs). Add the peas, carrot and cashews. Stir-fry 1 minute in the same way. Then add entire sauce and rice gently stir-fry to combine over medium-high to high heat until the rice “dances” (begins to make popping sounds) – about 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Do a taste-test for saltiness, adding a few shakes of salt . Then top with chopped cilantro/ coriander leaves. To serve, scoop rice onto a serving platter or serve into the pineapple shell, hollowed out.

Visit South Carolina & Georgia Beaches by Andrey Berry
Beaches are tourist magnets, attracting families and thrill seekers in their droves each year, who come to sunbathe, to take part in watersports such as surfing and bodyboarding, or sometimes to simply stroll along the shore. Beaches vary dramatically in their size and use; while some beaches are tourist meccas, others are unspoiled wildernesses, meaning beaches are often as interesting as other types of terrain. Hunting Island (SC) Hunting Island Beach is located near historic Beaufort, Hunting Island State Park is a natural paradise where visitors come to enjoy the serenity of nature. Fripp Island (SC) The most seaward of the Sea Islands in South Carolina, Fripp Island is a wildlife sanctuary known for its relatively uncrowded feel. Edisto Island (SC) Edisto Beach is the choice for guests who want to get back to nature. Kiawah Island (SC) Kiawah Island is a coastal island off South Carolina, with 10 miles of pristine beaches, approximately 10,000 acres of natural woodlands and every amenity to meet the needs of the entire family. Myrtle Beach (SC) As the largest resort along South Carolina’s 60-mile Grand Strand, Myrtle Beach is the East Coast’s ultimate vacation hub. Isle of Palms (SC) The Isle of Palms is as Lowcountry hideaway outside of the busy city of Charleston.
Folly Beach (SC) Known to locals as the Edge of America, Folly Beach has a charming Southern small-town surf vibe just 15 minutes from downtown Charleston. Hilton Head (SC) One of the largest islands on the East Coast, Hilton Head is perfect for families and individuals who are looking for a large resort area with an array of activities to enjoy. Tybee Island (GA) Often making a great day trip from Savannah, this island can stand alone as a destination as well, beckoning you to enjoy a Tybee Island vacation. St. Simons Island (GA) St. Simons Island features two white-sand public beaches, two of the loveliest beaches in Georgia. Jekyll Island (GA) Jekyll Island is a larger island, with three public beaches and a host of Georgia beach rentals available throughout the summer. Callaway Gardens (GA) Callaway Gardens is a popular spot for Georgia beach vacations, actually features the largest inland man-made white sand beach anywhere in the world. Ellis Square in Savannah Georgia
Ellis Square is one of the great stories of the preservation and restoration effort in Savannah. Not too many years ago, Ellis Square was a parking garage. The parking area was eventually demolished and replaced with the Square we see today. Today Ellis Square is a bustling place. With City Market at its doorstep, many people choose Ellis Square as a place to relax and soak up some southern sun. Things to do and see in Ellis Square • City Market is a wonderful place to check out some shops, grab some food and pick up some artwork by locals artisans. City Market stretches for two blocks starting at Ellis Square and running to Franklin Square. • The Fountains of Ellis Square is probably the most modern… anything…in the Squares in Savannah. Shooting water straight up into the air from underground, the jets of water dance around in random patterns. If you pay close attention you can figure it out and walk through the entire length of the fountain without getting wet. • The Johnny Mercer Statue n the west side of Ellis Square is a small sculpture of the famed Savannahian
