La cercanía con el campo está presente en los paisas, que no pasan mucho sin darse una vuelta por sus alrededores y respirar naturaleza. Y no solo un clima primaveral los acompaña todo el año; lo hace también la floricultura que se produce en las veredas cercanas, hermosas notas multicolores que se exportan al mundo entero.

Ellos se preparan todo el año para montar la selección de sus mejores productos en soportes que llevan a sus espaldas, como acostumbraban sus abuelos, y es lo que se conoce como “silletas”, que pueden alcanzar tamaños monumentales y que llevan con orgullo ante los aplausos de los asistentes que los reciben como héroes. Sin duda, el Desfile de Silleteros, que se celebra todos los agostos, es el evento central de la Feria de las Flores. Allí, miles de personas se reúnen en una gran manifestación de la cultura paisa, acompañada de artistas, músicos, grupos de danza, cabalgatas, desfiles y actividades que se llevan a cabo en las calles y plazas de toda la ciudad. Por su parte, el Jardín Botánico es la sede de algunas de las actividades imperdibles de la feria. Ya adentro, hay que visitar el Orquideorama, con una variada gama de orquídeas y otras flores propias de la región. Toda esta fiesta proviene de la ciudad, de todo lo que la compone, y es para compartirse con alegría. Allí no hay visitantes, todos son parte de este corazón floreciente que es Medellín. edellin is a dream in bloom; its petals rise like mountains surrounding this magnificent and sweet valley bursting with nice people. The pervasive year-round
spring weather warrants its apt designation as the City of Eternal Spring, as do the flowers produced in the nearby villages, lovely multicolored hues that are exported throughout the world.
Fair of Joy It was over fifty years ago that the Santa Elena village farmers– who for ages have come down to the Placita de Florez bringing their fresh bouquets–were invited to showcase these crops in a special event in the city, which later turned into the great international fair it is today. It is a yearlong preparation to assemble the best selection of their products to be borne on their backs on supports known today as silletas or “chairlets”, as their forerunners did before them, that can reach monumental sizes and which are carried with pride before audiences applauding them as heroes. Undoubtedly the Silleteros Parade, held every August, is the central event of the Festival of Flowers, and it is not for granted. There, thousands of people gather in a huge demonstration of paisa culture, accompanied by artists, musicians, dance groups, cavalcades, parades and activities in the streets and squares of the city.
Diversity Naturally, some of the major fair activities occur in the Joaquín Antonio Uribe Botanical Garden. Once inside, you must visit the Orchid dome, which showcases a great variety of orchids and other exotic flowers of the region. Fanciful shapes and colors are part of this exquisite show. This fiesta originates in the city and in everything that comprises Medellin, and it is to be shared with joy. Nobody is a visitor here; all are part of this thriving heart that is Medellin. 18 |

Una muestra de ello, son el tradicional cerro Nutibara con el retazo histórico que es el Pueblito Paisa, reminiscencia de la vida típica de nuestros abuelos; y el cerro El Volador, un espacio renovado con interesantes rutas arqueológicas y ecoturísticas, donde el horizonte de la ciudad se conecta con los indígenas que la habitaron originalmente. Desde el cerro-mirador se aprecia a plenitud cómo serpentea el metro de extremo a extremo del Valle. Desde las cabinas de estos teleféricos se aprecia la inmensidad de la ciudad, mientras lleva a propios y extraños a espacios educativos y culturales, merecedores de reconocimientos internacionales, como los parquesbibliotecas España y San Javier, al nororiente y al occidente de la ciudad, respectivamente.
Íconos paisas Una visita obligada, sin duda, es el centro de la ciudad, al que se puede llegar a través del moderno metro. Allí, se encuentran las esculturas regordetas, del artista plástico universal Fernando Botero, de la Plazoleta Botero. Y, circundando este templo de la cultura, a cielo abierto se encuentran tanto el bellísimo Museo de Antioquia, que cuenta la Esta es Medellín

historia del departamento desde antes de sus inicios hasta hoy, como el majestuoso Palacio de la Cultura. Y muy cerca de aquí, se pueden apreciar exhibiciones de talentosos artistas nacionales e internacionales en el Museo de Arte Moderno, siempre activo y sorprendente. Para los amantes del cosmos, el Parque de los Deseos ofrece unas muestras sobre astronomía y la relación histórica del hombre con el universo. Contiguo está el Planetario Municipal, para que el contacto con las estrellas sea aun más cercano. El majestuoso Parque Explora está más al norte, cerca al campus de la Universidad de Antioquia. Es un centro interactivo de ciencia y tecnología para inquietos de todas las edades, poseedor del acuario más grande de agua dulce de Latinoamérica. Cuando se hace necesario un momento de paz y armonía, ahí está El Parque de los Pies Descalzos, con sus jardines zen que invitan a los visitantes a despojarse de los zapatos para caminar entre bambúes y sobre piedrecillas relajantes. Desde allí se observa el edificio inteligente de las Empresas Públicas de Medellín, una de las entidades más destacadas de Latinoamérica. Y para finalizar esta breve reseña de los muchos lugares para conocer, están el Teatro Metropolitano y Plaza Mayor, donde se dan los más importantes eventos de la ciudad. No obstante, es preciso detenerse antes en la Plaza de la Alpujarra para admirar las variadas esculturas y obras de arte, grandes y pequeñas, como la Plaza de la Luz y el Monumento a la Raza. edellin is established in the AburrĂĄ Valley, surrounded by a green horizon of dainty mountains pointing to a beaming sky. Past and present intertwi-
ne and emerge with eclectic constructions that come up from neighborhood to neighborhood, and give life to sophisticated new business areas. An example of this are the traditional Nutibara hill, featuring the historical remnant that is the Pueblito Paisa, reminiscent of the typical life of our forefathers, and El Volador hill, a renovated space with interesting archaeological and ecotourism tours, where the city horizon line connects to the Indians who lived there originally. From the hill viewpoint you can fully appreciate how the metro meanders from one end of the Valley to the other. In fact, the metro cable lines have transcended their importance of masstransport to become true tourist icons. From these cable car booths, the vastness of the city sprawls before the onlooker, while carrying locals and outsiders to educational and cultural spaces, recipients of international recognition, such as the library-parks EspaĂąa and San Javier, to the northeast and west of the city, respectively. 30 |

Medellin Icons A must, without a doubt, is downtown, which can be reached through the modern metro. There we find the heavy-set sculptures of universal artist Fernando Botero, at the Plazoleta Botero. And, surrounding this temple of culture, in open air we find both the beautiful Museum of Antioquia, which tells the story of the province since before its inception until today, and majestic Palace of Culture. And very close by, you can see exhibits of talented national and international artists at the Museum of Modern Art, always active and surprising. For lovers of the cosmos, Wishing Park offers samples of astronomy and the historical man - universe relationship. The Municipal Planetarium is adjacent, for contact with the stars to be even closer. Majestic Parque Explora is further north, near the University of Antioquia campus. It is a science and technology interactive center for the curious of all ages, bearing the largest freshwater aquarium in Latin America. A few meters away is a peaceful plant oasis: the Botanical Garden, an open space that inspires moments of harmony with nature, taking refuge in one of the Esta es MedellĂn

iconic places of Medellin: the Orchid dome, which provides an opportunity to experience the inexplicable splendor of orchids. When you crave a moment of peace and harmony, there’s Barefoot Park, with Zen gardens that invite visitors to shed their shoes and stroll between bamboo areas over relaxing pebbles. From there you can see the smart building of the Medellin Public Utilities. And to conclude this brief review of the many places to visit are the Metropolitan Theater and Plaza Mayor, where the most important events in the city take place. Before, however, you must stop at the Alpujarra Square to admire the many sculptures and artwork, such as Plaza de la Luz and the Monument to the Race. This is Medellin, a city replete with places to visit and with landmark neighborhoods such as El Poblado, Laureles and Estadio with their traditional charm and their projections to the future.

Antioquia ha popularizado en todo el país la bandeja paisa, una generosa vianda que viene con siesta incluida. Fríjoles, arroz, carne molida, chicharrón, arroz, huevo frito, tajadas de plátano maduro, aguacate, chorizo, hogao y hasta ensalada, se distribuyen de una manera apetitosa y colorida en un plato grande ovalado. La bandeja paisa tiene como sobremesa la mazamorra de maíz pelado, en la que se sirve en una taza granos de maíz cocidos en leche y acompañados de panela rallada. La arepa está siempre presente.
