Throughout these books, students will actively participate in meaningful and dynamic activities allowing them to communicate and practice English as they enjoy learning. Beats! considers English as a functional language to use in different day-to-day situations, as students learn through a constant social practice in which they interact in the target language. Therefore, learners will be using the language in a meaningful context and not just for educational goals. Grammar and vocabulary, the two main elements comprising a language are presented, learned and practiced while students involve interaction and dialogue so that they can realize how English is used to achieve different objectives. The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has selected Beats! for the three school grades of secondary education, which ensures a well founded and coherent learning path for students. Finally, Beats! builds on the Common European Framework of Languages; therefore, it guides students to reach a specific level of domain of the English language as they gradually create different products that enable them to reflect on, evaluate their progress, and develop a sense of accomplishment.

General objectives Nowadays, language is regarded as a way of understanding and communicating effectively in a global world and how people express thoughts based on what they have experienced. English is used to exchange knowledge, create and interpret the meaning of speech to establish social and interpersonal relationships. If the English language is conceived of as a social practice of meaning-making and interpretation, then it is not enough for learners just to know vocabulary and grammar. They also need to know how a foreign language is used to express feelings, needs, opinions, emotions and beliefs by means of linguistic and non-linguistic communication. Considering this, Beats! follows a balanced approach to topics, contexts and activities that will help students learn the code (vocabulary and grammar) of the English language as well as the skills required to take part in social practices.

Activity book The activities in the program are engaging and students will find motivation to use English with their classmates. Every lesson in Beats! is a new experience for students since there are only four simple steps to follow that improve language skills and foster communication as they allow teachers to facilitate the learning process. DISCOVER: Aimed at engaging students’ interest and curiosity in the topic of the unit as it offers a triggering question that invites teenagers to share their thoughts and points of view, integrating what they already know and have experienced in relation to the topic being explored. THINK AND DO: Guides students in each lesson to build on their knowledge while interacting in meaningful tasks that help consolidate grammar and vocabulary. Students will find a wide variety of activities such as dialogs, writing prompts, role-playing games, exchange of views, among others. CREATE: This is the section in each lesson that invites students to work in a collaborative way to create a final product as they increase and improve their communication skills. This is the perfect moment for students to really interact on their own, while teacher provides tools for dialogue according to the learning environment on which the lesson has been set. ASSESSMENT: This tool helps students and teacher understand the progress they have made as they reflect on the work they have done so far to increase their language skills, identify their weaknesses and brainstorm strategies to improve their communicative competences in the target language. Assessment is used as a learning tool to support students’ metacognitive skills and help them become lifelong learners. Students develop a sense of ownership and efficacy to measure the extent to which they have achieved the goals of English learning.

Reader’s book An enjoyable, interesting and exciting book that offers students a collection of fiction and non-fiction texts, beautifully illustrated and centered on teenage students to build interest, curiosity and engage them to read, reflect, increase knowledge of the language and above all, foster a taste for reading.
Audio CD with fixed images The CD includes all the listening activities found in the Activity Book, which allow students to listen to native speakers and practice intonation, pronunciation and a stress-timed language. In addition, regular work on listening strategies equips learners for communication in the real world. The Reader’s Book stories have also been recorded to help students set the scenario for each text, making the reading experience more interesting and fun.

The Teacher’s Edition in Beats! additionally includes a detailed Scope & Sequence, some simple but very well-explained pages on the methodology that backs up this series, ten suggested assessment formats that teachers can easily adapt to their group needs, the audio scripts, a Grammar Reference section that incorporates explanations and example sentences for a quick check on important structures, and also provides the Answer Key to assignments given in the Activity book.
