Jerez de la Frontera, es la quinta ciudad de Andalucía en número de habitantes y el segundo término municipal más extenso de España. Se localiza al sur de Andalucía y provincia de Cádiz, con un clima agradable y suave, un paisaje de colinas sembradas de viñedos que nos llevan al mar, una costa de extensas playas de arena blanca. Jerez de la Frontera is the fifth largest city in Andalucía in terms of inhabitants and the second most extensive municipal area in Spain. Located in the province of Cádiz, in southern Andalusia with a mild, pleasing climate, a landscape of rolling hills planted with vines that lead us down to the sea and a coastline of extensive white sand beaches; a territory rich in history, cultural heritage and natural resources.

Dating back to Phoenician times Jerez is known throughout the world for its sherry wines, for breeding Carthusian horses, as the birthplace of Flamenco, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and motor sport, for which it has been named World Motorcycle Capital 2015-2017.

Jerez goza de una extraordinaria situación geográfica, situada en una fértil zona de campiña formada por la vega del Guadalquivir, junto al río Guadalete, y a pocos minutos de las playas atlánticas y la Sierra de Cádiz. Jerez enjoys an extraordinary geographic location, situated in a fertile zone formed by the Guadalquivir plain close to the river Guadalete and a stone’s throw from both the Atlantic beaches and the Sierra de Cádiz. Its excellent geographical location, halfway between sea and sierra, means the city is bathed in over 3,200 hours of sunshine per year.

Jerez is equipped with an intermodal transport network and modern infrastructures connecting with an international airport from which major airlines operate. A railway station located in the city centre and offers multiple connections to numerous cities and capitals, including three high-speed train connections. the Denomination of Origin of Sherry Wine and Vinegar produced in Jerez as well as the Specific Denomination Brandy de Jerez, wines and brandy with over 3,000 years of collective history. Such a deep-rooted wine-growing culture led to Jerez being named “European Wine City 2014”
To speak of Jerez de la Frontera is to speak of its wine-growing industry and its internationally famous sherry wines. Sherry has had, and still has, a key role to play in the history of Jerez.
Special mention must also be made of the red, white and rosé wines being produced by the wineries of the Geographical Indication Tierra de Cádiz, author’s wines of recognised prestige that join forces with the diverse typologies of Sherry Wines and Brandy de Jerez.
Jerez is the centre of the Jerez Region, made up of nine towns that invite you to follow the Wine and Brandy Route of the Marco de Jerez, a route that stretches from the extensive beaches of the Cádiz coastline, through the countryside and open hills of the green vineyards and the marshes of the Guadalquivir river, a region with vestiges and testimonials of its thousand-year history and one that conserves a rich historical and artistic heritage. A wide range of cultural and natural resources bear witness to the splendour reached by the Sherry industry in the 18th century, providing the origins of an architectural heritage which includes the famous sherry wineries known as “Cathedrals of Wine”.

La cuna del flamenco Jerez está considerada la cuna del arte flamenco, destacando un palo genuinamente jerezano como la bulería. Toda la ciudad rezuma arte, pero hay barrios con especial embrujo como San Miguel, Santiago o La Asunción, cuna de grandes familias cantaoras. Nombres propios como Lola Flores, José Mercé o Moraíto han llevado el flamenco de Jerez por toda la geografía nacional e internacional. Jerez cuenta con numerosas peñas flamencas y tablaos, que ofrecen actividad durante todo el año, en los que el visitante podrá disfrutar del arte en cualquier momento. La ciudad cuenta con la Cátedra de Flamencología y Estudios Folclóricos Andaluces, en el Centro Andaluz de Flamenco que se encuentra ubicado en el Palacio de Pemartín, en pleno casco histórico de la ciudad.
Jerez has numerous peña flamenco clubs where the art can be enjoyed at any of the many events and activities they organise throughout the year. Visitors can also enjoy performances at the flamenco tablaos such as ‘Puro Arte’, ‘La Taberna Flamenca’ and ‘La Guarida del Ángel’ or in tabanco sherry bars such as ‘El Pasaje’.
El Festival de Jerez, que se desarrolla este año del 23 de febrero al 10 de marzo, o la Fiesta de la Bulería, son citas obligadas para todos aquellos amantes del flamenco más puro. El Ayuntamiento de Jerez está dando un fuerte impulso al flamenco como elemento cultural dinamizador de la ciudad así durante todo el año se prolongan distintos ciclos que programan diversas actividades relacionadas con el flamenco en colaboración con peñas, colectivos y el Centro Andaluz del Flamenco. El momento culminante de estos ciclos es la celebración del Día Internacional del Flamenco el próximo 16 de noviembre.
The city also boasts the Cátedra de Flamencología y Estudios Folclóricos Andaluces, at the Andalusian Flamenco Centre located in the Pemartín Palace in the heart of its historic centre. The Jerez Festival, which takes place this year from February 23th to March 10th, or the Bulería Festival, are events not to be missed by all those enthusiasts of Flamenco in its purest form.

Jerez Town Council is providing a strong impetus to flamenco as a revitalising cultural element of the city and will therefore be organising different cycles throughout the year, offering a range of diverse activities related to flamenco in collaboration with the peñas, local associations and the Andalusian Flamenco Centre. The highlight of these different cycles will be the celebration of International Flamenco Day on November 16th.
Jerez is considered by many as the birthplace of flamenco, with the distinctive Jerezano bulería. The whole city exudes art from every pore but there are barrios with special enchantment, such as San Miguel, Santiago or La Asunción home of the great families of flamenco song. Artists such as Lola Flores, José Mercé and Moraíto have taken the flamenco of Jerez all over Spain and around the world.

Jerez, unida a través de la historia al caballo español, celebra la Feria del Caballo 2019, de 11 a 18 de mayo. Y lo hace invitando a amantes, aficionados y expertos del sector a disfrutar de un amplio programa de propuestas de carácter deportivo, cultural, formativas, de ocio y espectáculo, con la que la ciudad pretende reivindicar su importante papel dentro del desarrollo de la industria española ecuestre.
Es una oportunidad única para descubrir esta ciudad a partir de una de sus señas de identidad más internacionales, el caballo, que, desde la antigüedad, y junto al vino y al flamenco, ha sido uno de los emblemas de Jerez. Durante la Feria de Jerez se organiza una interesante programación de actividades y pruebas hípicas que culminan con la entrega del preciado Caballo de Oro, una de las distinciones más prestigiosas que se otorgan en el mundo de la hípica.

Jerez de la Frontera offers an exquisite range of local cuisine thanks to fresh local produce, fruit of geographic diversity, an excellent climate and the historic legacy left by the different cultures that have populated the region over the centuries, all of which is reflected in a gastronomic diversity of tastes and aromas which, accompanied by a range of sherry wines of different varieties, combine to produce a varied and exquisite gastronomic proposal.

Fresh local produce includes fish and shellfish from the nearby Bay of Cádiz, olive oil, meat, fruit and vegetables from the surrounding countryside, cheese and charcuterie from the Sierra de Cádiz, which when combined with the versatility of Sherry wines serve to captivate the most demanding of palates and impress the most prestigious chefs from around the world.

Amongst the typical local dishes we find berza jerezana, kidneys in sherry sauce, bull’s tail, pork scratchings, cheese or “ajo de la viña” the traditional dish of the grape pickers served in the autumn and winter months accompanied by the first must of the year, with local “tocino de cielo” and Pedro Ximenez sherry as a perfect dessert.

The name of Jerez is associated at an international level with its motor racing circuit which hosts several national and international competitions throughout the year, the most outstanding being the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix which in 2019 takes place from the 3th to the 5th of May. Enthusiasts and visitors can also participate in daily guided-tours of the Racing Circuit and Motor Museum. Jerez also has modern sporting facilities such as the Chapin Sports Complex providing a wide range of sporting activities and two extraordinary 18-hole golf courses, Sherry Golf and Barceló Montecastillo Golf Resort, which includes the High-Performance Sports Centre ideal for football and elite sports training sessions. Jerez de la Frontera se remonta a la época de los fenicios y sus tres mil años de historia se palpan en la ciudad, que goza de un rico y variado patrimonio histórico-artístico, y ofrece hoy en día un amplio abanico de estilos arquitectónicos y edificios originales que hacen de Jerez una preciosa ciudad con una fisonomía urbana realmente única y singular. El centro histórico de la ciudad está declarado como Bien de Interés Cultural con la denominación de Conjunto Histórico-Artístico. Uno de los monumentos que más distingue esta suma de culturas es el Conjunto Monumental Alcázar de Jerez, en el que se puede visitar la mezquita, baños árabes, molino de aceite, torre octogonal, pabellón real, patio de armas, jardines, huerto, aljibe y su zona arqueológica. Igualmente, con una entrada combinada se pueden visitar los Claustros de Santo Domingo, otra de las joyas arquitectónicas de la ciudad, y el Museo Arqueológico, ubicado en pleno centro histórico y que nos muestra la historia de Jerez y su comarca. El rico patrimonio artístico incluye monumentos religiosos como la Catedral de San Salvador, San Dionisio, la Cartuja de Santa María de la Defensión, la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, las iglesias de San Miguel, San Mateo, San Lucas, San Juan de los Caballeros, San Juan de Letrán, Las Angustias o el convento de Santo Domingo. Jerez fue considerado ‘Ciudad de los Conventos’ y, aún conserva algunas congregaciones de clausura. Jerez también cuenta con un rico patrimonio palaciego entre los que destacan el Palacio de Campo Real, en la plaza Benavente, o el Palacio del Virrey de la Serna, en la plaza Monti. The historic centre of the city has been declared of Cultural Interest with the denomination Historic-Artistic Heritage Site. One of its most distinguished conservation sites is the Conjunto Monumental Alcázar de Jerez; a heritage site which includes the mosque, Arab baths, oil press, royal pavilion, courtyard, gardens, vegetable garden, well and archaeological site. By purchasing a combined ticket, you can also visit the Santo Domingo Cloisters, another of the architectural jewels of the city, and the Archaeological Museum located in the heart of the historic centre and which shows the history of Jerez and its surrounding region. The rich artistic heritage includes religious buildings such as San Salvador Cathedral, San Dionisio, the Santa María de la Defensión Carthusian Monastery, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, the churches of San Miguel, San Mateo, San Lucas, San Juan de los Caballeros, San Juan de Letrán and Las Angustias or the convent of Santo Domingo. Jerez was once considered the “City of Convents” and to this day still conserves some enclosed congregations. Jerez also has a rich heritage of palaces, amongst which stand out the Campo Real Palace in Plaza Benavente or the Virrey de la Serna Palace in Plaza Monti. In every street and on every corner in the historic centre visitors may feast their eyes on unique architectural elements, beautiful buildings that will take them back to some forgotten time in the centuries of history amassed by the city. Una ciudad de museo Jerez ofrece una amplia oferta de museos y colecciones que permiten conocer la historia y el rico patrimonio que atesora la ciudad. El Museo Arqueológico Municipal es uno de los más relevantes en la provincia, ubicado en la preciosa Plaza del Mercado, junto al Palacio Riquelme, muy cerca de Bodegas Tradición, que cuenta con la impresionante Colección de Pintura Española ‘Joaquín Rivero’, una verdadera joya donde apreciar pinturas desde el siglo XIV hasta el XX y los maestros de la pintura española: Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Murillo o Romero de Torres. Otra de las joyas museísticas de Jerez es el Museo de Relojes La Atalaya que, emplazado en un entorno bodeguero realmente espectacular, es la primera colección de relojes antiguos en Europa.

Otros espacios museísticos de interés ciudad son el Museo de la Catedral, el Museo del Enganche y el Museo del Arte Ecuestre, ambos en la Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, el Museo del Belén y el Museo de la Miel y las Abejas en Rancho Cortesano.
Jerez boasts a variety of museums and collections that allow us to learn more of the history and rich heritage of the city. The Municipal Archaeological Museum is one of the most important in the province, located in the beautiful Plaza del Mercado square beside the Riquelme Palace and close to Bodegas Tradición, which also hosts in its picture gallery the impressive Joaquín Rivero collection of Spanish Painting, a true hidden gem with paintings from the 15th to the 20th century and works by great masters of Spanish painting such as Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, Murillo and Romero de Torres. Another important museum in Jerez is the Atalaya Clock Museum, located within a spectacular old winery setting and housing the largest collection of antique clocks and watches in Europe. Other museum spaces of interest in the city include the Cathedral Museum, the Driving Museum and Equestrian Art Museum, the Nativity Museum and the Honey and Bee Museum at Rancho Cortesano.

Además de su extensa colección botánica y zoológica, el Zoo cumple una función educadora participando en importantes programas de conservación de especies.
Jerez cuenta con numerosos enclaves naturales donde poder disfrutar de la naturaleza y turismo activo. La naturaleza está muy presente debido a su extenso término municipal, el segundo más grande de España, que incluye los Montes de Propios del Parque Natural de los Alcornocales y en los que habitan especies animales singulares, algunas en peligro de extinción, este espacio natural se puede visitar practicando senderismo o disfrutando de rutas en todoterreno, además permite pernoctar en el alojamiento rural Cortijo de Rojitán. Igualmente cuenta con numerosas lagunas como la Laguna de Medina, las lagunas de Las Canteras y El Tejón, que son reservas naturales, así como la laguna de Torrox y la de los Tollos. An extensive natural municipal area Jerez possesses numerous natural enclaves perfect for those who enjoy nature and wish to participate in active tourism. Nature is ever present given the extensive municipal area surrounding the city, the second most extensive in Spain and which includes the Montes de Propios of the Alcornocales Nature Park inhabited by unique species of animals, some of which are in danger of extinction. This natural space can be visited to practice trekking or enjoy routes in 4x4 vehicles, as well as offering the possibility to spend the night in rural accommodation such as the Cortijo de Rojitán. It also possesses numerous lakes such as Laguna de Medina, Las Canteras and El Tejón, which are nature reserves, or the Laguna de Torrox and Los Tollos. Jerez also has numerous parks and woodlands such as Las Aguilillas Park or La Suara. The botanical garden contains over 150 different species and the zoo over one thousand animals belonging to 200 species from all five continents, the Zoo and Botanical Garden is a great attraction for visitors. In addition to its extensive botanical and zoological collection, the Zoo also carries out an educational role and participates in important projects concerning the conservation of endangered species.
Cádiz and the Sierra de Grazalema Nature Park where we find the highest point in the province at 1,654 metres. The river Guadalete flows alongside the city and its history is explained at the Ceret Tourist Information Centre. Nearby Sanlúcar de Barrameda where the river Guadalquivir flows into the sea gives way to the Doñana Nature Reserve, considered one of the most important protected natural zones in Europe and which offers the unique experience of sailing down the river Guadalquivir to then enter the Reserve.
Jerez presents a landscape of rolling hills between the fertile plains of the Guadalquivir and Guadalete rivers, close by the Bay of Cádiz and a coastline formed by the extensive beaches of El Puerto de Santa María, Chipiona, Rota, Chiclana, El Palmar, Los Caños de Meca, Zahara de los Atunes and Tarifa. Caballo, vino, flamenco, gastronomía, patrimonio hacen de Jerez un enclave privilegiado. A estos atractivos hay que sumar un ciclo festivo especial, con singulares señas de identidad como la Feria del Caballo, las Fiestas de la Vendimia o la Navidad. La Feria del Caballo, que en esta edición de 2019 se celebrará del 11 al 18 de mayo, está declara de Interés Turístico Internacional. Considerada una de las mejores Ferias de Andalucía su principal atractivo es el Paso de Caballos y de Enganches así como la accesibilidad de sus casetas, hermosamente adornadas. Las Fiestas de la Vendimia, declaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional, engloban una seria de actividades que durante 15 días, y con el nacimiento del vino como temática, ofrece a jerezanos y visitantes una amplia oferta de actos culturales de las más variadas temáticas. Las Fiestas, las más antiguas de España ya que se celebran desde 1948, se celebran siempre en el mes de septiembre coincidiendo con la vendimia y el nacimiento del nuevo mosto, representado en la tradicional Pisa de la Uva que se celebra en el reducto catedralicio.
The Horse Fair will be held from May 11th to 18th in 2019, declared of International Tourist Interest. Considered one of the best fairs in Andalusia, its main attraction is the Horse and Horse Carriage Parade together with its beautifully decorated casetas, open to all who wish to enter. The Grape Harvest Festival, declared of International Tourist Interest in 2015, includes a full programme of events that lasts for fifteen days and with the new wine of the year as its central theme offers locals and visitors alike a wide range of cultural activities of the most varied kind. The Festival, the oldest in Spain dating as it does from 1948, is always held in the month of September to coincide with the grape harvest and the birth of the new must, the latter represented by the traditional Treading of the Grapes ceremony which takes place by the cathedral steps.
La Navidad es otro ciclo festivo con ‘sabor propio’ en Jerez. Las tradicionales zambombas, declaradas Bien de Interés Cultural Inmaterial, los belenes, la rica gastronomía y un espectacular alumbrado hacen de estas fechas navideñas un momento ideal para descubrir Jerez.
With a taste all of its own Horses, sherry, flamenco, a rich historical and artistic heritage, unique and varied cuisine and a privileged location all make Jerez an immensely attractive place to visit. To these attractions must be added our special festive cycles featuring unique identifying symbols of Jerez as do the Horse Fair and the Grape Harvest Festival or the very special way in which we celebrate Christmas with a full programme of events.
Christmas provides another festive season with that “special taste” of Jerez and without doubt the city has been able to stamp its own character on the season. The traditional zambombas, declared an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest, nativity scenes, rich local cuisine and spectacular Christmas lights make it an ideal time to visit the city.
