Las Cantaderas y San Froilán Son las fiestas más tradicionales de León, pues no en vano su celebración se remonta a la Edad Media. La ciudad vive esos días un ambiente de inspiración medieval, con mercados de época donde pueden disfrutarse exhibiciones de cetrería, talleres de oficios tradicionales, atractivos puestos de venta y representaciones teatrales. En el marco de estas fiestas, el domingo anterior al 5 de octubre, tiene lugar la representación de “Las Cantaderas”, una celebración que conmemora la victoria cristiana en la Batalla de Clavijo y la liberación del legendario tributo de las “cien doncellas” que los reyes asturleoneses pagaban anualmente a los califas musulmanes. En la ceremonia, las jóvenes “cantaderas”, ataviadas a la usanza medieval, bailan al ritmo marcado por la “sotadera”, encargada de instruirlas en las costumbres musulmanas. Así, avanzan desde el Ayuntamiento hasta la catedral para cumplir el ceremonial del foro u oferta. Luego sigue una misa solemne de agradecimiento a la Virgen, y a continuación la comitiva se dirige a la Plaza del Grano para degustar chorizo y morcilla al son de bailes regionales. El Desfile de los Carros Engalanados y Pendones Tradicionales llegados desde todas las comarcas de la provincia, completa la jornada festiva.
Las Cantaderas and San Froilán The festivities of San Froilán are the most traditional of León. The city lives in those days an environment of medieval inspiration, with vintage markets where you can enjoy falconry exhibitions, traditional craft workshops, attractive stalls and theatrical performances. In the framework of these festivities, on Sunday before October 5, the performance of “The Cantaderas” takes place, a celebration commemorating the Christian victory in the Clavijo Battle and the liberation of the legendary tribute of the “one hundred virgins” that the Asturian kings paid every Paid to the Muslim caliphs. In this ceremony, the young “cantaderas”, dressed in medieval style, dance to the rhythm marked by the “sotadora”, in charge of instructing them in Muslim customs. Thus, they go from the City Hall to the Cathedral to fulfill the ceremony of foro u oferta. Then there is a solemn thanksgiving mass, and the party moves to the Plaza del Grano to taste chorizo and morcilla to the sound of regional dances. The Parade of Decorated Carriages and Traditional Banners from all the regions of the province completes the festive day.
