The objectives of this guide, which is aimed at small veterinary surgeons, is to provide guidelines on the use of antibiotics in daily practice and refresh the reader’s knowledge of the pharmacokinetics, indications, and contraindications of antibiotics. It includes numerous figures, tables and charts that summarise the dosage forms available and the treatment protocols for each antibiotic family, so as to help practitioners choose the most suitable antibiotic for each case and thus achieve maximum therapeutic efficacy while preventing the development of resistance.



Presentation of the book Small animal veterinary medicine is complex and resembles human medicine in that each case is treated individually based on the patient’s clinical signs and physiopathological features. The range of drugs available for veterinary use is now vast and a wide variety of antibiotic families are used to treat infectious diseases affecting small animals, always based on the therapeutic indications for each family and the microorganisms present in each situation. The prescription of human drugs for use in animals under the rules of the “cascade� is decreasing nowadays thanks to the higher availability of veterinary antibiotics. However, this recent increase in the range of molecules available may confuse veterinary surgeons and make it more difficult for them to choose the most suitable antibiotic for each patient. For this reason, this guide provides veterinary surgeons with a classification of the antibiotics for veterinary use indicated in small animals, as well as therapeutic protocols to increase drug efficacy and thereby minimise the development of antibiotic resistance. This guide on antibiotic therapy is the result of the joint efforts of several specialists in pharmacology and small animal internal medicine, .


The authors Victoria Villagrasa Sebastián PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Valencia, Spain, in 1998. She is currently professor at CEU-Cardenal Herrera University (Valencia), where she teaches Pharmacology to undergraduate students of Veterinary Medicine and Physiotherapy. She has also taught students of Medicine at the University of Valencia, as well as the postgraduate course titled “Use of anti-infectious drugs in prophylaxis and therapeutics” at CEU-Cardenal Herrera University. She currently teaches master’s-level courses in the field of pharmaceutical healthcare and consumer health and food safety at CEU-Cardenal Herrera University. She has performed this activity concurrently with research, supervised various PhD theses and collaborated in multiple projects and research contracts with different pharmaceutical companies. All this has resulted in the publication of many articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals specialised in pharmacology. She has coauthored two editions of the book Manual de farmacología : guía para el uso racional del medicamento (Pharmacology Manual. A Guide to the Rational Use of Drugs), as well as many book chapters and specialised international scientific publications. She is a member of the Committee for the Evaluation of Drugs for Veterinary Use of the Spanish Medicines and Health Products Agency (AEMPS).


Gemma León Bello PhD in Public Health from Miguel Hernández University, Elche, Spain (2015). Joint master’s degree in Environmental Health from the University of Valencia, Menéndez Pelayo International University and the “Universitat Empresa” Foundation (2003). She holds a diploma in Methodology of Research in Health Sciences by the Health Studies School of Valencia (EVES) and a Diploma in Public Health by the Spanish National School of Health. She also obtained a diploma in Veterinary Pharmaccology in 2014. She is currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of CEU Cardenal Herrera University (Valencia), where she teaches Pharmacology. She is in charge of medicines management at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, CEU Cardenal Herrera University. She has participated in several research projects and is the author and coauthor of several scientific publications and teaching materials.

PhD in Veterinary Medicine by the Polytechnic University of Valencia in 2004. She obtained a postgraduate diploma in small animal medicine in 2014, and is the coordinator for the CEU-Cardenal Herrera University postgraduate programme in small animal medicine. She has participated in many research projects on neuronal regeneration at the Príncipe Felipe Research Center (Valencia) . Veterinary surgeon at the CEU-Cardenal Herrera University Veterinary Teaching Hospital since 2008, and director of the hospital since 2013. She has coauthored various textbooks and scientific articles published in international journals. She has participated in many research projects and is currently a member of a research group on experimental and applied veterinary surgery.
