The Weaker Sex? A very wise man once said: “Whatever you give a woman, she’ll make it better. If you give her sperm, she can give you a baby. If you give her a house; she can make it a home. If you give her groceries, she’ll make it a meal. If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart.” In fact, she grows whatever is given to her <wink>. Not only do we perform all the “wise man” tasks, but women have been subjected to a position of subservience in the past. Yet, sometimes we continue to take a back seat in aiding men in their endeavors. Some women never gain notoriety, never claim headlines or demand to be mentioned. Most are content in doing all the thankless work that women have done for decades. Yet, without woman, men wouldn’t have gained any notoriety. Hell, they wouldn’t even be here! Never in history have women been so recognized by other women and now, finally, by men. Subjecting women to a lower status or even just as equal when they may be better is just plain wrong. Women are not only special but better in so many ways. Some men have even chosen to become women. For example, Hailey Davidson won a LPGA mini-tour just last month. I love men! However, I have spent a lifetime loving the women in my life; my mother, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, daughters, editor-in-chiefs, graphic designers, and all the women in my industry who have made great strides. June 1st we will be recognizing “WomElsa Gaudet en’s Golf Day”. The founder and creator of that day, Elisa Gaudet, deserves recognition for this as well as an author, promoter, world traveler, skeet shooter, and cancer survivor. The Altwell CBD company, who is on this month’s cover, has a female co-owner, Nikki Brown. Last month’s cover featured Ball Pop and has two female owners, Meaghan McLaughlin and Katye Kalivoda. Previous covers featured Deb and Erica Bennett from high profile Orca golf bags. The list goes on. Perhaps with women in charge in industry, politics, and education it will help manifest a better, safer, more knowledgeable world. We can only hope. P.S. – I have always given my mom a card for Father’s Day because she was both for so many years. Whether your mom or dad plays the role of father I wish you all a very Happy Father’s Day!!

The Pickett family

For the CBD brand ALTWELL, wellness and innovation are close to their home and heart. The family behind the brand, the Picketts, have been in the health, food, and beverage industry for four generations. They are known for creating and building the Muscle Milk line of protein products, which they successfully grew into a global brand that has been recognized as Beverage of the Year (2008), Best of the Small Companies Under 1 B (2009), Packaging of the Year (2009), and Most Innovative Brand (2013). After selling Muscle Milk in 2014 and launching a flavor business in 2015, the Picketts began to ask, “What’s next?” The answer came from within the family. At the time, ALTWELL co-founder Nikki Brown’s mother was struggling to get a good night’s rest. She heard that CBD was a natural sleep solution, but after trying several brands, she struggled to find one with a delicious taste, potent results, and a trustworthy production process. She told her daughter about her dilemma — and inspiration struck. Brown and the rest of the Pickett family began personally experimenting with CBD products, but they found that the consumer experience was very inconsistent. “We thought, ‘Let’s do it ourselves!’ Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 2

We knew that we could bring quality, consistency, and amazing taste into the CBD space,” Brown says. And they did with ALTWELL, a modern wellness brand that creates high quality and effective CBD products to balance, nourish, and soothe the body and mind. “At ALTWELL, our mission is to help people live their healthiest lives naturally,” Brown says. They knew CBD was a great solution because of its many holistic wellness benefits. “We are all looking for natural ways to soothe stress, boost mood, and bring balance, peace, and calm into our lives — especially over the past year — and CBD is an amazing wellness tool to help you achieve that,” Brown says. If you’re not familiar with CBD, here are the basics: Cannabidiol (aka CBD) is one of the many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Unlike THC, CBD is nonintoxicating and non-psychoactive, so it does not have the ability to get you high. We have an entire system in our bodies related to these compounds — the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s a key system that regulates stress, mood, metabolism, and more. CBD works with the body to enhance this system. CBD has been shown to help relieve anxiety ¹, improve sleep quality ², reduce

ALTWELL Topical Sports Stick inflammation in the body ³, soothe sore muscles 4, and ease achy joints 5. Because of its benefits, CBD has become a go-to for athletes, weekend warriors, and anyone looking to bring more ease into their everyday life. For golfers in particular, CBD delivers a blend of benefits to help enhance performance and help you recover after your round. CBD has a calming effect, so it can ease jitters and tenseness during a stressful round. ALTWELL Balance Tincture and Balance Gummies are ideal 11

ALTWELL Protein – Vanilla

ALTWELL Balance Tincture – Mint for this and can be taken 15-20 minutes before tee time to help get you in the right headspace to play your best. CBD is also a powerful tool to add to your recovery routine — the ALTWELL Sports Balm helps ease muscle soreness, and soothe back, hip and joint aches that golfers frequently experience. Plus, their CBD Protein Powder helps replenish muscles afterwards so you can recover faster and get back out on the course. ALTWELL offers a wide variety of products so consumers can find the best type of CBD for their goals and lifestyle. Their product line includes tinctures that you can put under your tongue or add to beverages, delicious gummies, protein powder to mix in smoothies, softgels, and topicals like facial serum, lotion, and a sports balm. Each product has its own unique perks — some are designed for restful sleep while others help soothe sore muscles — but they all help bring on balance and calm. Another thing every ALTWELL product has in common: They are created with 12

the highest quality ingredients and tested rigorously. ALTWELL sources their hemp extract from Colorado, and they carefully choose each supplier for their potency, consistency, and ethical growing practices. ALTWELL also prides itself on their meticulous testing process. They test every product three times through independent third-party laboratories. The brand is also fiercely committed to transparency and building trust with their customers. With every purchase, they provide a certificate of analysis (COA) that shows how the product performed on tests checking for CBD and THC levels. The COA also shows that the product passed tests for heavy metals, pesticides, bacteria, mold, and other materials, so consumers know what they’re

getting is free of any harmful contaminants. And perhaps most importantly, they ensure their products are delicious. “Taste is king” is a motto for the brand. “In developing our products, taste and quality were at the center of what we were aiming for,” Brown says. “We went through multiple iterations to find the best flavor profile, and we feel great about where we landed.” This is just the beginning for ALTWELL. They are constantly innovating and creating new products inspired by what their community is looking for. “We’ve always had a very close connection with our consumer and that is at the heart of what we do,” Brown says. “It all starts with you!” To learn more about CBD and ALTWELL’s products, visit altwell.com and follow them on Instagram at @altwellcbd. BIOLYTE Helps Golfers Fight Dehydration On and Off the Course

BIOLYTE®, the IV in a bottle®, is the world’s first liquid supplement to offer the same benefits of IV rehydration therapy but in a drinkable form that features three refreshing flavors. BIOLYTE is the perfect thirst quencher and natural energy boost for golfers who should keep hydrated during a round in order to play their best. Drinking just one bottle of BIOLYTE is the equivalent to consuming 7 ½ sports drinks but with one third the sugar and only 40 calories. The essential performance beverage, which contains the same amount of electrolytes as in an IV bag, is fast becoming the on course drink of choice for golfers. “Golfers oftentimes forget how easy it is to become dehydrated while playing,” said Dr. Luther Rollins, a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and Pain Specialist practicing in Atlanta who created BIOLYTE. “Being on the golf course for 4-5 hours can significantly decrease your electrolyte levels, which can lead to fatigue, nausea, and sluggishness. BIOLYTE is a perfect solution for preventing these symptoms of dehydration, and providing golfers with natural energy to remain energized throughout their entire round!” BIOLYTE is similar to how an IV bag works, and it uses two different kinds of salts that are key for rapid dehydration relief—Sodium Chloride and Potassium Chloride. Both types of 14

electrolytes keep more water in your body, thus hydrating you more effectively than plain water. Importantly, the medical-grade drink delivers 650% more electrolytes than leading sports drinks. The natural energy boost comes from the inclusion of vitamins B12, B5, B6, B3 and L-Carnitine. BIOLYTE works to fight fatigue, cramps, nausea and even overindulgence. BIOLYTE is the perfect drink for all golfers. The product recently partnered with the Southeast AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) as the preferred hydration drink and its three refreshing Citrus, Tropical and Berry flavors will be available at 40 AJGA tournaments in Florida, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Arizona. The company also recently announced partnerships with a number of PGA Sections in the south and southeast as they expand their presence in golf and become available in more markets and states.

Currently, BIOLYTE can be found in major grocery chains such as Publix and Krogers, as well as online at Amazon. For more information about BIOLYTE or for a list of retail partners and regional availability, visit www.drinkbiolyte.com.

Equus vs Muscle (Horsepower vs Horsepower) The World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida was the site of the Inaugural – Festivals of Speed – North Central Florida. Mixing real horsepower with the invention of the horseless carriage. Never has the likes of Horses and Horsepower come together in such an iconic setting. Festivals of Speed, Founder, Joe Sabatini realized the importance of connecting the horse industry with the Festivals of Speed early on with the emerging Ocala market. Dates for this special event were firmed up with the opening of the World Equestrian Center. Festivals of Speed is a series of motorsports-themed events that display the world’s most exotic cars, motorcycles, watercraft, and luxury brands. Adding Ocala to the premiere events list with Ritz Carlton Orlando Grand Lake, Alpharetta, Georgia, and Vinoy Park overlooking the Bay in St. Pete, “Ocala just seemed like a natural for our market, and the World Equestrian Center was the perfect venue for the Festival,” Sabatini explained. “We are so pleased with the attendance numbers and the overall comments from the first event, we are planning for our 2022 show season.” The Festivals of Speed weekend on Saturday was a perfect connection to the Kentucky Derby being watched on the 30-foot Jumbotron. Rev up those engines and be prepared for Ocala’s Festivals of Speed 2.0 – World Equestrian Center style in 2022.

golf bachelorette

trust that she knows how to survive in a deserted island situation. She also camps a lot and studied biology so I am pretty sure the two of us could survive. What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? So, there are two recent experiences I had in the same round of golf that really burned my cookies. The first was, the golf course decided to put a golfer who was walking and a golfer who was riding right in front of my foursome. The walker refused to get in the cart despite him holding up multiple groups and the course wasn’t even checking in! He was also wearing jeans but that’s another story. While we were being held up, we were waiting to hit onto the green and the pair behind us teed off but didn’t yell “FORE!” and hit the golf cart we were standing next to. Please yell “FORE!” when necessary, big pet peeve. Name the three most important things to you in this world: family, friends, and happiness. Without those three things, I probably would not be where or who I am today.

Ali Wallace Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in Phoenixville, PA and grew up in Pottstown, PA.

Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy? I would choose love. I think when you have a lot of love in your life, whether it be from friends, family, or partner in crime, you have the most support you’ll ever have and that can often lead to success or money.

What do you do for a living? I work in Financial Planning & Analysis for Burlington and also work as an adjunct professor for Jefferson University starting this fall. I will be teaching Apparel Merchandising & Management. What would you like to do for a living? I would love to own my own business someday. Something in the fitness industry or my own apparel company, maybe even golf apparel? Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? I spend a lot of time with my friends and family but on my own time I love to cook, read, run, hike, and I recently picked up chess. What golf apparel do you like to wear? Some of my favorites are definitely Nike Golf and Lady Hagen. I am a big fan of golf skorts and I think their skorts fit me best. Steak, chicken, or seafood? I have recently switched to eating about 50% vegetarian meals and 50% nonvegetarian meals and I have somehow naturally switched to predominantly eating seafood and fish. But, I do love a good steak and baked potato! What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? A library filled with books, some kind of knife for hunting, and an unlimited supply of sunscreen. Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why? I would absolutely, 100% have my sister on the deserted island with me. She lived in a jungle while studying abroad in Mexico so I would 20

What do you fear the most? I have always feared darkness. I think there are a lot of negative associations with darkness such as loneliness and unconsciousness. What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Jessica Korda, Michelle Wie West, Brooke Henderson. But I do love my usual foursome I have been playing with: Lauren, Ellah, and Alicia! What are some of your great accomplishments? Finishing my MBA was a major accomplishment for me. It was a lot of work and took up almost all of my time outside of work. Despite the struggles, it has been so worth it to have put myself through the stress of being in school full time and working full time. Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? A relaxed evening at home…with a cocktail or glass of wine, or even a beer would be fine! Favorite comedian? Iliza Schlesinger, I can watch her stand-up specials on repeat. So relatable, so hilarious! Movies:…comedy, drama, action, romance? Comedy or action (I’m a huge Marvel fan!), but I have begun watching more drama and period pieces recently so I have been feeling drawn to more of those lately. Favorite television channel? I am torn between Bravo and Lifetime Movie Network. Such a guilty pleasures

for me. I love the housewives and even though every Lifetime movie follows the same formula, I find them so entertaining. Last book you read? Women Who Run with the Wolves. I highly recommend this for all women to read. It has really helped me to better understand the nature of the woman and therefore has helped me to better understand myself. I have also been reading The Witcher books and can’t wait for season two to come out. News, current events; hardcopy or on-line? I tend to read my news and current events on-line or I listen to podcast or something like NRP. Every once in a while, a newspaper will end up on my doorstep and I’ll read it. Favorite magazine? I don’t read magazines all that often but if I do, it’s usually Women’s Health or Cosmopolitan. I like some of the quick workouts Women’s Health has to offer and Cosmo is always an entertaining and easy read. Favorite charity to support? My favorite charity to support is St. James School. It is a school in Philadelphia that serves the underserved neighborhoods within North Philadelphia. The school removes the common obstacles that come from generations of poverty and adds resources to help the students build a better future for themselves and their families. It’s a really wonderful place for the students and their families.

golf history

Jim Barnes: A ‘Ghost’ of the Florida Historic Golf Trail The Winner of the Two PGAs, An Open, and the U.S. Open As we look forward to every U.S. Open, historians are always curious to see who won this event 100 years prior. Well, back in 1921, the winner of the U.S. Open was England’s Jim Barnes. He was a peer of Bobby Jones, Gene Sarazen, and Walter Hagen. Barnes was as good as those three legends of the game – and often better on any given day – but not as well remembered as those three greats of American golf. Barnes’ victory at the 1921 U.S. Open at the Columbia (Maryland) CC was quite historic. Barnes led by four shots after 36 holes and by seven shots after 54 holes. He shot 72 in the final Jim Barnes swing follow through

22

round to win by a record nine shots, a winning margin not surpassed until Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 shots. Barnes is only a handful of golfers – Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Tony Jacklin, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Martin Kaymer -- to have won the U.S. Open from start to finish. By the way, Barnes’ first-place U.S. Open prize money in 1921 was $500. Barnes, who was born in England in 1886 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1906, first played in the U.S. Open in 1912. He finished in 18th place. The following year, at the historic 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, which American amateur Francis Ouimet won in an 18-hole playoff with England’s Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, Barnes finished fourth, but he began the final round tied for the lead. Barnes is also one of 17 golfers who have won at least three of golf’s four professional majors. Besides Barnes, that list includes Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Raymond Floyd, Lee Trevino, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy. It can be argued that Barnes actually won the first career Grand Slam – which now includes Sarazen, Hogan, Nicklaus, Player, and Woods -- because he won three Western Opens (1914, 1917, and 1919) and two North and South Opens (1916 and 1919). Both events were considered a major at the time. Walter Hagen also won both the Western Open and the North and South Open. While Barnes never played in the Masters, it wasn’t because he was excluded. He was invited to play in the first Masters, but didn’t accept the invitation. Barnes’ absence may have been because of his age – 47, in March 1934. The last major that he played was the 1932 U.S. Open. He finished 55th. In his career, Barnes played in 36 major championships and he made the cut in 35 of them. To say that Barnes was talented is an understatement. In addition to making his mark in the world of professional golf, he made a few appearances at golf courses in Florida that are now part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail. Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 2

Jim Barnes Teeing off In 1923, Barnes played in an exhibition match at the Hollywood (Florida) Beach Golf Resort. Joining him that day were golfing greats Jock Hutchison, Gene Sarazen, Jonny Farrell, and Hollywood Beach pro Lee Nelson. Hutchison won the 1920 PGA and 1921 Open Championship, Sarazen eventually won seven majors, and Farrell later won the 1928 U.S. Open. Barnes was also the first head pro at the Temple Terrace (Florida) Golf and Country Club. In 1925, Barnes was the host professional for the Florida Open -- held at the Temple Terrace Golf and CC. The event was labeled the “Greatest Field of Golfers Ever to Play in Florida.” The only well-known golfer who didn’t play was Bobby Jones. Leo Diegel won that tournament. It’s worth noting that Barnes won two pro golf tournaments in Florida back in 1921. He won the Florida Open and the Deland Open, which was contested at the College Arms GC in Deland. Sadly, that golf course was converted to real estate in 1955. Barnes, an inaugural inductee into the PGA of America Hall of Fame in 1940 and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989, stood 6-foot-4 and was known as both “Long” and “Gentleman” Jim Barnes. On June 16,1964, American touring golf professionals presented Barnes with an illuminated address which honors him ‘for elevating the standards of golf as Open Champion of the United States and Great Britain and as the First American Professional Champion.’ It was signed by then USGA President Clarence Benedict and 31 touring professionals such as Nelson, Palmer, and Billy Casper. That address is now on Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 2

display at the West Cornwall Golf Club, in Lelant, Cornwall, England, which was Barnes’ home course as a young man. Barnes died at age 80 on May 24, 1966 in East Orange, New Jersey, where he is buried.

While Barnes is no longer alive, his spirit remains in the Sunshine State and is a permanent part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail, as well as the history of the U.S. Open.

growing the game

Veterans with a Mission Dedicated to enriching the lives of Veterans from all branches and their family members through the camaraderie and sportsmanship of golf, the Veteran Golfers Association hosts more than 450 local tournaments in 49 states, culminating in the VGA National Championship each fall. The Veteran Golfers Association started as an idea amongst Wounded Veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. Several friends routinely play golf courses around the area to encourage each other to not only improve their games, but to also heal through camaraderie, conversation, and competition. After recovering from their injuries, these friends relocated around the country, and missed the opportunity to compete against one another regularly.

Realizing that many other Veterans may be in this same situation, these friends created in 2014 the Veteran Golfers Association. The first golfing organization dedicated to promoting the game to all Veterans and their family members. The VGA develops programs that allow members to compete, socialize, and remain physically active through the game of golf. Through local league play, regional tournaments, and national qualifiers, reinforcing values such as integrity, respect, and perseverance through the game of golf. Additionally, the VGA offers family-oriented activities that help Veterans, and their family members increase the amount of quality time spent together and be more active in their communities. The statistics truly show what makes this organization what it is today for so many Veterans and family members.

• 9,100 + Members • Over 450 Golf Tournaments this year • 4 Regions of the United States • 49 States Represented • 100+ Volunteer Leaders • 325 Purple Heart Recipients Playing • Over 80,000 Rounds of Golf Played this season 24

Look at the roster in your state. Membership is a requirement and Family Members can play in these events. My father was in the Army and had a son in the Navy. Although I had not served, I am able to join and participate, listen to the stories, and share memories. Granted the organization starts their season, while the weather has not really warmed up in some locations… it is still the ‘Mission’ that brings us all together. This week’s tournament was in Panama City, Florida at the Nicklaus Designed – Bay Point. The Nicklaus Design group had a field day with the golfers’ emotions when playing Bay Point. Making it through the day was truly a major adventure. I heard a comment… “I was in so much sand today… it seemed like I was back in the desert battling for our country.” Okay… that seemed a little extreme until I found the bunker on a par 5… and that pretty much took my doublepar quota for that hole. Could anyone bring me a camel to get out of here? Look at their website (vgagolf.org) and I believe that you will be surprised with the course quality that they are playing around the country. The Local Qualifiers set you up for a State tournament showdown. Then you can advance to the Regional Championships and then ultimately to the 2021 National Championship located this year at the Baltusrol & Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey. Savannah: It’s The Real Deal – Today & Every Day Savannah, Georgia is an ideal destination for golfers. It’s also one of the few locations in the U.S. where the appeal of the city is as attractive and alluring as the golf in the area. It’s no surprise that Savannah’s top golf destination, The Club at Savannah Harbor, is a member of the Georgia Golf Trail. This golf course, a Bob Cupp and Sam Snead design, represents a great reason to travel to Savannah and to keep returning on an annual basis. “The joint appeal of the Club at Savannah Harbor and the city of Savannah as a vacation destination is what keeps people coming back to Savannah year after year,” says Doug Hollandsworth, founder, Georgia Golf Trail. Every day, Savannah’s pedestrianfriendly layout enhances the allure of the city and its many ‘attractions’ -- Southern cuisine restaurants, riverboat cruises along the Savannah River, architectural tours, spectacular art galleries, Civil War re-enactments, and the city’s number one attraction -- the Savannah Historic Theatre, which was established in 1818. Of course, any visit to Savannah would be incomplete without a stroll along River Street or a visit to the Historic District of

The Georgia Golf Trail Presented by Savannah, which is the home of the City Market. Both River Street and the City Market are brimming with antique shops, classy boutiques, fabulous restaurants, one-of-a-kind nightspots, and locally owned and operated inns, hotels, and B & B’s. The City Market is located in a fourblock area downtown and is in the heart of Savannah’s entertainment district. Every night, you should be able to find a live, local band producing a toe-tappin’ sound for visitors and locals, alike. It’s worth noting that the beignets at Huey’s On The River (www.hueysontheriver.net) are as good as you’ll find in New Orleans and the Bloody Mary’s are the best in Savannah! It’s also worth noting that Savannah has an Olympic affiliation, too, as it staged the sailing competition for the 1996 Olympic Games,

Savannah Riverfront

which were based in Atlanta. If you want some beach time while in Savannah, nearby Tybee Island is the place to go in order to enjoy the sand and the surf. Tybee Island, officially known as Savannah’s Beach, has five miles of public beach along the Atlantic Ocean. T-Shirts, shorts, and flip flops are considered the official clothing while on Tybee Island. If you spend the night on Tybee Island and want to see a brilliant sunrise, book a room at Hotel Tybee (www.hoteltybee.com). As for the golf at The Club at Savannah Harbor, its merits as a golf destination speak for themselves. The Club at Savannah Harbor, built along the tidal marshlands, is a club with distinction, as it hosted the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf event on the Champions Tour from 2003-2013. The Champions Tour enjoyed its annual visit here and you will, too. Golf Magazine refers to this course as “Savannah’s Golf Centerpiece.” When you play The Club at Savannah Harbor, look for Snead’s bust which stands near the 1st tee. All 18 holes at The Club at Savannah Harbor have a name. Each moniker is intentionally chosen. For instance, Moonshiner’s Haven, the 5th

Huey's Bloody Mary hole, is in a secluded part of the course and was once the home of illegal activities in the area! Tomo Chi Chi, the 12th hole, is named after the big, seven-foot tall former Savannah Indian Chief. This hole is long and has a huge 17,000-square foot green. At two-putt experience is an achievement. Alligator Alley, the 14th hole, has a narrow passageway which serves as both the fairway and as a natural path for alligators which cross the course, usually under the veil of darkness. One of the more memorable shots will be the tee shot at Yamacraw Bluff, the par-3 17th hole. It can be a memory maker! For golfers, an ideal place to spend the night is the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. It’s a hop, skip, and a jump away from The Club at Savannah Harbor. If you stay at the Westin, you’ll also receive complimentary water ferry service to River Street. Also, it’s no surprise that in the 2020 Georgia Golf and Travel Awards, the Club at Savannah Harbor was awarded the state’s Best Golf Resort. And, for three straight years (2018-2020), Savannah was selected as the Best City To Visit in Georgia. Savannah’s antique shops, classy boutiques, fabulous restaurants, one-of-a-kind nightspots, locally owned/operated inns/hotels/B & B’s, The Club at Savanah Harbor, and the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa await your arrival. Creating the Towel Tag arose out of

Craig Holub’s frustration to access his golf towel during a round of golf. “Specifically, there wasn’t an easy way to secure your golf towel to your golf bag or cart and then quickly release it and take it to the green with you,” said Holub. “That’s how it all began.” Prior to the creation of the Towel Tag, most golf towels were secured to the bag by means of a flimsy metal hook and grommet, like those used on a shower curtain. This traditional attachment made it difficult to quickly and easily release the towel when you needed it. “I decided to combine the simple features of the traditional bag tag and an accessible towel holder,” said Holub, “and the Towel Tag was born. Then we figured out a way to personalize it and make it unique for the golfer and unlike anything else currently available on the market!” The innovative Towel Tags utilizes “Pull-Thru Technology” to create an entirely new generation of functional bag tags. Towel Tag is designed to temporarily secure your golf towel without the use of grommets or hooks. Each tag

is manufactured using two separate compounds to create a functional bag tag with exceptional durability. They’re ideal for temporary storage of your golf towel, head covers, rain gear, even outdoor clothing. The standard Towel Tag can be personalized with just the golfers name or you can add things like photos, logos, or patterns to truly customize it. “We take a lot of pride in our design and customization because a lot of times the end user doesn’t really know what they want,” said Holub, “so we create it for them and give them a unique one-of-a-kind design that truly represents who they are!” Having trouble finding an innovative,

unique golf item that will effectively promote your business? Wake Up Your Golf Glove Game

Made in the Shade Made in the Shade US is locally owned and operated by Mike and Vanessa Waters and is based out of Fort Myers, Florida. We offer handcrafted, all-natural products such as Beard Oil, Beard Balm, Beard Shampoo, Cologne Roll-Ons, Puppy Paw Balm, and Tattoo Balm. After a few months of research and experimenting with various formulas, we found what worked the best while also ensuring that only all-natural, premium ingredients were being used such as African shea butter, raw cocoa butter, organic coconut oil and jojoba oil. We were honored to learn that Rich Havyer, from Golf Central Magazine, was impressed with our beard products. “My beard feels brand new. I have also noticed that my split ends are few and far between,” he said. He also mentioned that from applying the beard products with his hands, he has noticed that his hands are now moisturized and has helped with dryness. We, at Made in the Shade US, also take pride in giving back to our community and strive to do so in any way we can. For every logo wristband we sell on our Etsy shop, we donate 50% to the Gulf Coast Humane Society in Fort Myers. Also, May is Mental Health Awareness Month so 10% of all our sales for the month of May will be donated to Mental Health America. In honor of Father’s Day, Made in the Shade US is releasing a new scent… Coconut Rum! We thought it was the perfect scent for those bearded men living in SWFL that love the beach, sun, and palm trees. A scent that will scream SUMMER and will be a reminder of warmth and relaxation. Red Rooster Golf launched the sport’s newest premium golf glove and unique subscription service with a focus on giving back to the game. “We surveyed more than 3,500 golfers in the past 60 days,” said Red Rooster founder Kerry Moher. “More than 80% of survey respondents admit they don’t change their glove often enough.” While the distribution channel for most gloves drives up costs, Red Rooster gloves will be sent directly to consumers with an optional subscription service and no-cost shipping. The lineup of gloves will be manufactured at the same facilities and by the same process as the biggest brands in the sport. Along with offering a flexible, unique subscription service model, Red Rooster will also help golfers “PLAY IT FORWARD.” For each glove bought Red Rooster will donate a glove to junior golf initiatives. “Not only are the gloves high quality, like anything I’ve worn on Tour, and the get-give opportunity is an awesome way to support junior golf,” said Brad Fritsch, a former PGA Tour member and supporting founder of Red Rooster. Red Rooster launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in May followed by an eCommerce launch on www.redroostergolf. com in summer 2021. “This partnership will allow us to put a new glove on each young person’s hand in our program,” regardless of their ability to pay for it”, said Brandon Baker, CEO of First Tee Triangle “and will allow us to create even greater equity and inclusion during our classes.”

golf course architecture in America, immigrating here from Scotland in 1899 and made his home in Pinehurst. He was by far the most prolific course designer, with an estimated 600 courses to his credit and a member of the Golf Hall of Fame. He often stated – “Golf should be a pleasure, not a penance.” He designed courses that fit into the natural contours of the land; not unduly penal, but strategic and deceptive courses that players of all abilities could love and respect.

“Our founder, Everett Kircher, had

a vision to pay homage to Donald Ross and build a course that included some of his greatest holes from his top courses east of the Mississippi River,” said Bernie Friedrich, Senior Vice President of Golf Operations. “We wanted to also create holes from places that most golfers may not have the opportunity to play, so there was a focus on the private clubs.”

An unusual path: gifts from a golf career It isn’t a path that many have taken– fashion designer to financial planner. For many years now, I have been helping people navigate their financial livesassisting them create goals, manage their investments, develop risk management plans, and guide them through every step of their financial plan. I am truly honored to work with people and their families in such a meaningful way. But my years at Ben Hogan Golf as their head fashion designer working on their private green grass apparel line has helped me enriched my career as a wealth manager, as all 1st careers impact second and third acts. I see so many people picking themselves up after last year- restarting careers, creating new paths, and doing what people do best, adapting, and thriving. It feels like a good time to reflect on the gifts that my first act provided me. If anyone knows Ben Hogan’s story, he was one of the first golfers who implemented practice as a cornerstone to success. Hogan has a famous quote “Every day that I missed practicing takes me one day longer to be good.” Practice, to me, is the most critical skill a financial planner can have—the daily devotion to learning and honing your 38

skills so that you can teach and guide your clients. The ability to practice is the ability to improve. There were legendary stories about Hogan’s expectation of excellence when I worked with the company. The most memorable for me was the first shipment of golf clubs were not to his standards, and without thought to the cost, he had them all destroyed. He began the design process again. Failure happens. We take missteps with our financial lives. We don’t save early enough. We take on too much debt. We are dealt a bad hand with an illness or a job loss. I strive with my clients to create a non-judgmental environment that missteps aren’t the end but a place to start because the truth is, I believe everyone can take charge of their financial lives with help, knowledge, and the will. At the Hogan location in Richmond, VA, we had a full driving range behind our building, and pretty much everyone I worked with was a golf pro. Going out and golfing with them was a dream. As a spunky kid from Syracuse with a textile design degree, I wasn’t a golfer but taking opportunities as they come to you and learning from the people around you have been

the keys to my later business success. Through the years, I have learned from many mentors and surrounded myself with enough intelligent and dedicated people to improve my “play” and help others improve theirs. I had the honor of doing the private label for the 1997 Masters and 1997 Valderrama Ryder Cup, working directly with Tom Kite to put the players’ custom clothes together along with the license for the public. I can say working with such great golfers and people would have probably made me happy to this day. Unfortunately, Mr. Hogan passed away while I was employed there, and I can say a great man was lost. After our company was sold to Spalding, the entire fantastic team was let go. Just like that, I was compelled to create a different life for myself. And that’s what I hope for all the people coming out of unprecedented times, maybe a little dented and bruised, the ability to use those skills and lessons from the past to build a great future. ~Best of luck, Faye Sykes, CEO and Independent Wealth Advisor at Scarlet Oak Financial Services. Harbour Ridge Member Defeats Odds With Two Hole-In-Ones In One Round second (and third-ever) hole-in-one; same round, same course, same day! Patsy, who calls herself a “bogey” golfer with a handicap of 19, said, “I am always just happy to clear the hazards and get the ball on the green; none of our Par 3s are easy!” My golf group, ‘The Queen of the Greens’, was so excited after the first hole-in-one -high fiving and taking photos. After the second, I was in shock!” Members of her foursome that day included Jill Kelly, Barbara Alesi, and Elaine McCusker. Patsy also said she and her husband Andy are a golfing family. They have been playing golf together for nearly 50 years. Their two sons, David and Daniel, are single-digit golfers who have a total of 3-hole-in-ones between them (GO, MOM!). She’s proud to now have passed their love for golf down to their four grandsons, ages 13, 10, 9, and 6. The 13-year-old is already on track to catch up with Grandma with his first hole-in-one this past November. “Golfing is a passion for

me—I love it in all its forms, and I am still working on my game.” The Pete and P.B. Dye designed River Ridge course has hosted numerous qualifying rounds for USGA championships, including the U.S. Open. The River Ridge course boasts one of the highest slope ratings in all of Florida and can be played from any of five sets of tees to accommodate all handicap levels. Harbour Ridge is a private, 885acre community with 695 residences that overlook its two picturesque golf courses, acres of Audubon-certified nature preserve and is perfectly situated on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The Board of Directors, management and staff, along with members, are all dedicated to maintaining their commitment to financial soundness and stability in an environment which enables them to enrich their quality of life. What are those odds? 67 million to 1 to be exact. The average American golfer makes a hole-in-one once every 12,000 rounds. On Saturday, May 8, Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club member Patsy Harris, defeated those odds by a long shot. Patsy, a member at Harbour Ridge since 2014, decided to start her day off with a final 18-hole round of golf for the 2021 season. Little did she know it would end in 67 million to 1 odds! She teed off the River Ridge #10 at 8:16 a.m. and just under an hour later, using a 5 hybrid from 105 yards, she made her second-ever hole-inone on hole #14. Once Patsy got to the 7th hole at 11:35 a.m., she thought it best to use her 6 hybrid from 102 yards. She swings, she…SINKS IT! Incredibly, she successfully sunk her 44

had a wonderful quote summing up the importance of the game: “Golf is the engine of good.” Golf contributes more to charity on an annual basis than all three major sports combined! There are more than 11,000 golf courses nationwide all doing events to help raise money or awareness to important causes. We are extremely proud at Royal St Cloud Golf Links to play a big role within our local communities. Between our golf course and banquet facilities, annually, more than 75,000 golfers and 120 couples choose us. RSCGL has a long list of very important causes and charities that we 46

support. A couple years back, the St. Cloud High School baseball field was in horrible shape. The field was just one giant injury waiting to happen. RSCGL called in favors and used our own cash and Human Resources to do a $30,000 rebuild of the entire field. We have been a longtime host for the Osceola Chapter of the Special Olympics, hosting hundreds of participants. The PGA Hope program, which uses the game of golf to help combat-wounded veterans recover from war, chose RSCGL as its sole representative in Central Florida. It is an honor to host this program. RSCGL proudly flies the “Back the Blue and Red” flags as well as the POW MIA flag 365 days a year. We also have painted golf carts with the colors of the blue, red and POW MIA that are used every day. We will never forget. Our military league plays twice a week and our flag challenge tournaments between the Police and Fire departments are extremely popular. Whoever wins gets their flag on top of the pole until

the next challenge. On another front, because we know that the game of golf needs to develop more and more junior golfers, we make sure our course is accessible to as many juniors as possible, unlike many courses. We host

junior golf in so many different forms such as tournaments, events, instruction, leagues, middle and high school teams, extending junior golfers great deals so they can enjoy the course with minimal to no restrictions, all year long. At RSCGL, our mission statement is very easy to remember -- “We are in the happiness business.” The game of golf and the people who are involved in the game are very powerful, kind, giving, caring people and so much more. Your local club is doing so much more for the community than most will ever know. It is easy to do because it is the right thing to do. We think Seth Waugh is really on to something. Golf really is the engine for good. Supporting your local club really means that you are also supporting all the great causes and charities that your club supports. It is an extension, of sorts. On behalf of all the 11,000 golf courses across the nation, we thank you and hope to see you out at the course soon.

freddy's fairway thoughts

By Fred Seely

Jim Howard (right) retired recently after 35 years as Director of Golf at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach and he was honored last month at the Jacksonville Area's Golf Association meeting. He's here with PV member and former JAGA President Adair Roberts. A development in our area has received a lot of publicity lately because of football. It’s called Glen Kernan and it’s the new home of the new Jaguar coach, Urban Meyer, and his favorite player, Tim Tebow. Both names should be familiar to you, even if you’re a casual football fan, but Glen Kernan might be unknown. That’s the way the developer, George Hodges Jr., wanted it. It’s about halfway from downtown Jacksonville to the beach and runs along the major artery called Butler Boulevard. But you can’t see it because of a big berm and it’s hard to find the entrance. The only real indicator is that something is there is the two Butler exits flanking it lead to Hodges Blvd. and Kernan Road. (Hodges is obvious; Kernan is the first name of Hodges’ wife.) The land used to seem next to useless, mostly mined out by the phosphate industry. Hodges’ father bought it up and sat on it, and then scored when he and some pals manipulated politically to get the University of North Florida there. Development followed, and George Jr. built his dream. The main entrance road has one small sign, just a bit bigger than Seminole’s. The road leads through another development and you can get lost getting to the guard gate. Once in, you see a lot of golf course and big homes set way back. The clubhouse is understated but near-perfect. The range is big, the service as you’d expect. The first tee is almost always wide open. It’s almost like they don’t want people around. The residents like their privacy and they get it. There are a lot of doctors from the nearby Mayo Clinic. There are Jaguar players. CEOs. You get the idea. There are many like it in Florida. Oh, as of last week, there were no homes for sale. The rhymes of golf You have to go way back to remember Don Veller, a good guy who remarkably coached the men’s team at Florida State on three occasions: 1952-57, 1967-69 and 1973-82. FSU golf is big-league now (Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger, etc.) but back then he toiled in the shadow of thenpowerhouse Florida (what happened to them?) and were under a somnolent athletic department (this was before Bobby Bowden), but he put his team in the NCAA Championship nine times in those 16 years. FSU honored him: the Don Veller Golf Course. (It’s now called Seminole Legacy Club after a Nicklaus redesign.) Veller also wrote a column for the Tallahassee Democrat and it was an outlet for another love: poetry. Don once sent me his collection and, though he is long gone, the rhymes remain with us. Here are a few: “He could be euphemistic,

48

But my pro just ain’t that nice. I call my ball a fade: He says the thing’s a slice.” “There was this dentist named Keys, Whose golf drove him nuts by degrees. He was heard to mutter, as he stood over his putter, ‘Open a little wider, please.’” “A member of this club Was just a chronic cheat. He quickly takes a gimme From as far as seven feet. One day he made a hole-in-one fter years of trying hard. But he couldn’t break his habit, Wrote a zero on his card.” The Walker Cup The term “best-kept secret” is usually part of a advertisement and you have to wonder why. If the product — often a resort — is a best-kept secret, isn’t it time to hire another public relations and advertising firm? Why would anything that wants business be proud of being a “secret?” That brings us to the Walker Cup. They don’t say it’s a “bestkept secret” but it is. In many ways, it is one of the best sporting events in the world, but the USGA keeps it hidden in the back room along with things like the Women’s Four-Ball. Why should it get more attention? Many reasons: attractive young participants, international rivalry, great venues (Seminole this year, then comes St. Andrew’s and Cypress Point.) But it get little attention. It’s even hard to figure out the scoring when you go to the USGA website. Another good project for new Commissioner Michael Whan. Getting even Every private club has an employee who has a) been there a long time and b) knows more than he/she should. At Biltmore Forest, the lovely club just outside of Asheville, N.C., the employee was pro shop attendant Sheila Fender. For 46 years! Sheila’s “retirement” came after a dustup over employee hours. It was all hushed up but apparently her situation got tangled up with that of an employee who disputed his compensation and made a legal fuss about it. Out she went … but she left a kiss behind. She wrote a book of her recollections, and the title tells it all: Golf Shop Sheila: The Book Some People Did Not Want Printed. Questions, indictments, comments? I’m at fs4569@comcast.net.

solidify his spot in the final championship match against Rod Perry. While Perry had a commanding victory, Koch displayed unwavering resilience to conclude his successful week. Continuing an impressive streak of performances, Koch landed within the top 10 of the nail-biting 2021 Stableford Championship at Orange Tree Golf Club, which had quite the dramatic ending. Following the conclusion of the final round, Tom Adrounie, Orange Tree Golf Club, and Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth, Eagle Harbor Golf Club, were tied at the top of the leaderboard with 87 points, forcing a sudden death playoff. The playoff continued for four holes with both players birdying two out of the first three holes. It all came to an end on the fourth hole where Adrounie, in outstanding fashion, chipped in for eagle to achieve his remarkable victory. It was also quite the debut for Connelly-Eiswerth’s first championship event as a new member in the Section! If this start to the season is any indication for the rest of the year, we are all in for a treat!

Greg Koch, Ritz-Carlton Golf ClubGrande Lakes Orlando, has had a pretty major month. Koch had quite an impressive run at the PGA Professional Championship. Sparing no effort for four days straight, he had one goal in mind throughout his rigorous week: securing a spot on the PGA Championship Team of 20. And after tying for 17th, he accomplished what he intended to do. Bound and set for Kiawah Island, there was nothing that could slow him down. Embracing the esteem from achieving the incredible feat of qualifying for his first major championship, he employed the momentum of his significant accomplishment and channeled it into his noble performance at the NFPGA Match Play Championship. After a solid qualifying round at Laurel Oak Country Club, he secured a bye in the round of 64. He advanced from the round of 32, continuing to play dominant matches, winning 4&3 in the round of 16. He grinded out a gutsy win in the round of 8, going to 19 holes in his match against David Damesworth. He went on to 52

SunnilandSUPERSpotlight: Dustin Powell

It is October 2nd, 2018 a tropical depression has formed just South of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and is starting to build. The storm track predicts landfall in the panhandle of Florida, and the inevitable is only days away. You have planned for it… you have created scenarios of “What if.” But it is now a reality… the storm has intensified; it has a name - Hurricane Michael – and it is on the way. The only thing is… how much strength it will build, and where it will hit. Ground zero for us would be Panama City Beach, or somewhere else East or West of the city. In a recent visit to Panama City Beach, we had the opportunity to sit down and discuss… the harsh reality of saving a coastal golf course with Bay Point Golf Club, Superintendent, Dustin Powell. How did you get into the Golf Course Superintendent business? Not knowing exactly what I was going to do after high school a school counselor new how much I enjoyed sports and being outdoors suggested I talk to a previous high school attendee that was now working in the golf course management program and teaching classes in Lake City. I first started schooling in the golf course equipment maintenance side… but after the first year, I realized that was not for me, so I switch for the final 3-years to the agronomy side of the business. I did my first intern job with Tim, that had gotten me excited about this business… and then came to Bay Point in 2007 as a second assistant. 54

With the transition to the new owners in the last few months, has there been changes that you have seen that benefit the course? We have all experienced a lot of changes… for the good. As is business when a transition is taking place, funds were held back, which cost us effort on maintaining the course. But we ended up with a lot of weed pressure, but we are in the process to bring it back to it’s normal high standard. We were a Kemper Sports managed property prior to the transition taking place. Meet LidoChem, Inc founder

– Don J. Pucillo – Note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of LidoChem. Inc. This month’s Performance Superstar features a conversation with company founder Don Pucillo.

How did you decide to get into the specialty fertilizer business? Pucillo: After graduating from Wagner College in NJ in 1976, and working for BASF, I took a position with a NY subsidiary of a European water-soluble phosphate producer, Prayon-Rupel, and learned about specialty fertilizer production and input sales. I loved the business, but when the New York office closed, I discovered my entrepreneurial spirit and decided to go out on my own. At that time there were only two producers of high-quality water-soluble phosphates. I believed if I could secure the source of products, price them more competitively and serve my customers well, I could build a sustainable business. On May 26, 1981, together with my wife Lisa, we started LidoChem, Inc. in the second bedroom of our home and, with the $2,500 we had saved, bought a desk, chair, business cards, stationary and a telex machine. I flew to Belgium and negotiated an

sion with the mission of delivering easyto-use, sustainable, greener, effective and competitive technologies to the agricultural crop and turf & ornamental fertility and disease management markets. I continued my quest to source products for this new division from offshore suppliers and located and introduced the first biological fertilizer, NutriSmart®, for the USA market. Needless to say, it was well before its time and the markets were slow to adopt this new technology. But we stayed true to our mission and our guiding principles, and, with the addition of Frank Dean, we developed patented and proprietary products for almost all market spaces. Each of these products were true to our mission and were designed to solve problems and to be used in Ecosystem Management programs for a wide variety of crops, turf and ornamentals.

Pucillo: Just as we were beginning to hit our stride with Performance Nutrition, Stoller Chemical launched a smear campaign in 2001 spreading rumors that our products contained poison and enticed a large grower to file suit. This campaign lasted for nine years followed by 5 years of litigation. A Federal Court in Michigan heard the case and we prevailed recovering much of our lost profits. However, we couldn’t regain the time invested in protecting a three-state market instead of expanding to neighboring states. With that ordeal behind us, we focused

Pucillo: I have had a number of mentors over the years but Dr. Haim Gunner, professor emeritus at University of Massachusetts stands out. His wisdom and knowledge of microbiology was the backbone of our Ecosystem Management philosophy.

What’s the future look like for Performance Nutrition? Pucillo: We are in the marketplace at the right time where more agricultural and turf caretakers recognize the value of regenerative practices. I see this business growing as the global environmental conscience raises and sustainable and regenerative practices become the norm.

What words of wisdom would you impart on the next generation of entrepreneurs? Pucillo: My advice to anyone starting a
