he lockdown, first, and then the summer heat has triggered a swimming pool craze in Italy. In the last few weeks, pools sales shot up and grew by 100%, an increase registered in May, just at the end of the lockdown, that kept steady all over the summer. The concern about the sars-cov-2, and the economic crisis born after months of isolation, made at-home-holidays all the more appealing, boosting the desire to improve private gardens with pools

(and also terraces, balconies, and indoor rooms), therefore increasing sales. Many private citizens, as well as hotels, resorts, leisure, and sports facilities, campsites or holiday structures, in the last weeks, decided to take advantage of this context to put their garden or facility back in hand, for example, to build a swimming pool in a place where you’re safe and allowed without a mask – at home – or to modernize an existing one, to make it more eco-sustainable.
A recent study by Businesswire reports that the global swimming pool market will possibly grow by 3.56 billion dollars during 2020-2024. The report also provides the market impact and new opportunities created due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We expect the impact to be significant in the first quarter – the research reports – but gradually lessen in subsequent quarters, with a limited impact on the full-year economic growth”. mer seem to confirm this hypothetical tendency: in Italy, for example, this growing popularity of prefabricated pools contributed in keeping the industry healthy, helping many companies to overcome the lockdown effects efficiently.

MADE IN ITALY POOLS, A STUDY IN DESIGN Design, technology, but also respect for the environment and nature. These are key trends for the Italian pool and spa Industry: beautiful water areas both comfortable and super-equipped. With a high regard for clean and geometric lines, the pools are enriched with accessories for relaxation and wellness, as well as purely hi-tech details often combined with the use of natural materials. Among the most recurring elements, the suggestive infinity edge, the insertion of one or more glass or acrylic walls, the stone and wooden surfaces, the underwater LED lighting, the hydromassage areas, water-saving and energy systems, and safety devices. What’s more, is that the management of the pool no longer weighs heavily on the owner. On the contrary, it’s simple and smart thanks to home automation, which, with a wide range of automation solutions, facilitates maintenance and ordinary “administration” of the pool. 6

GLASS, POPULAR, AND CHIC Transparency: in two words, glass or acrylic. Statal incentives for renovations and outdoor design encouraged many to improve their facilities, and the preferred style is minimal, based on games of transparencies, with underwater windows or different finishes than usual, and totally ‘in-
visible’ walls. Glass, therefore, is an undisputed protagonist when it comes to scenographic effects, always maintaining a refined and modern elegance that strikes straight to the heart of the observer. Using glass for the walls or the bottom of the pool gives the facility itself a considerable ar-

chitectural and functional value, however, buyers must always rely on qualified professionals: the slabs require the right processing, which brings with them perfect waterproofing at the joints. To install the glass, in the construction stage of the pool openings with special stainless steel counter-frames are provided in the cement structure. The
slabs are therefore housed in the frame so that the profiles are not visible. As a result, the glass appears as an extension of the covering and, depending on the shade of the material, more or less clear, or the play of light created with the aid of LED spotlights, monochromatic or colored, the effect is impressive. Although it needs more accurate and careful maintenance, acrylic allows creating the most extreme shapes and the most innovative patterns, with the designer imagination as the only limit.

This is the trend that, globally, marks the swimming pool industry, in a world where natural resources tend to decrease drastically, leading the water, not surprisingly nicknamed ‘blue gold’. And it does so
with a special project: the perfectly functioning 1:1 scale installation of an eco-friendly, zero-impact swimming pool, the masterpiece and of 2020 edition of ForumPiscine. 020 was a special year for the Italian Pool Award: the contest reached the milestone of the tenth edition, a long journey that saw designers, architects, and pool builders share with the editorial staff of the magazine Piscine Oggi, and the whole Italian aquatic sector, their most inspiring and captivating creations. Since 2011 there have been 419 candidates: 62 of them have ascended to the podium of the winners, including residential, commercial, and bio pools, whose category was created in 2013, when it was also added the Facebook Special Prize, which involves thousands of internauts in each edition. Every year the competing pools are evaluated by a technical jury which, analyzing a series of parameters related, not only to the aesthetics of the different projects but also to the materials employed, the technologies applied, the inclusion in the context, the accessories of the pools, etc., nominates a winner that'll receive the bronze ladder-shaped prize, designed by Osvaldo Casanova and made by the ancient Merighi Arte foundry in Bologna, on the stage of ForumPiscine. 10 YEARS OF ITALIAN STYLE The style of the swimming pools competing for the Italian Pool Award has changed over time, thus giving the precious opportunity to monitor, via the contest, the trends of the moment dictated by the market, from innovative lighting systems to eco-sustainable heating methods, a useful insight to better understand what direc-

ater, a fundamental element for life on our planet, represents a primary resource for Italy that, since ancient times, has intertwined its path with tradition. The buildings and installations made by the ancient Romans, pioneers of architecture, and water-related structures, are famous all over the world because they were the first to build infrastructures that contributed to the progress of civilization. Ideally, that’s when we could pinpoint the beginning of the ‘Made in Italy’: the Romans’ know-how was developed over the centuries and today finds its material-

ization through the skills of Italian professionals who work in the swimming pool and spa sector. The Italian production of pools, in addition to design and construction skills, relies on a wide range of high-quality components and materials essential for top-level results. And in this “game” a fundamental role is entrusted to the lining – inside and outside – of the pool. As we said before, the pool lining it’s like the outfit of the pool, and its importance is both aesthetic and functional. It’s a key element of each and every project, both from a
pragmatic point of view, since each liner has its own characteristics, such as a certain level of resistance, durability over time, naturalness versus a greater capacity for resisting the chemical elements present in the water; and from the aesthetic point of view, since the pool liner plays a pivotal role in the introduction of a swimming pool in any context, be it urban, rural or maritime. The choice of the pool lining does not stem exclusively from personal taste, at least if we wish that the pool environment, that is the surroundings of the water, is harmonious, symmetrical, firmly interconnected element by element. For this purpose, one can resort to the help of precious allies, namely paints, resins, and mixtures of various materials which, thanks to their characteristics, can give the pool a natural look and in tune with the surrounding context. In this review, we present some of the Italian excellence in terms of pool lining materials, dedicated to everyone who loves the natural style. 29

he POOL ARKdeko' system consists of a resinous, waterproof, monochromatic, non-slip monolithic coating. he BIOTENAX membrane is an ornamental colored plaster intended for decorative rough coating finishes in swimming pools, spas, fountains, ornamental ponds and other aquatic configurations created through various construction systems. The components of the BIOTENAX membrane, pre-mixed in the factory to guarantee their quality, are photocatalytic, i.e. they are substances which, if affected by the UV rays of the sun, produce ions called “free radicals”, which form a lethal environment for algae, bacteria, fungi and all other pathogenic microorganisms present
in the pool water. The additives in this mix also reduce the porosity and permeability of the finished product, thereby improving its durability and allowing reduced maintenance times and costs. SUNNYDAY ‘ON THE ROCKS’: NO MORE FROST DAMAGE Non-glazed panels are solar collectors made with plastic materials (such as PVC, polypropylene, neoprene or synthetic rubbers), with no insulation and glass covers. For these features, they are also known as “plastic” or “unglazed” collectors. They are the ideal solution when slightly higher than ambient water temperatures are required. One of the most interesting applications for unglazed collectors is the heating of outdoor swimming pool water: here they provide a perfect solution to maintain a pleasant water temperature (25-28 °C) in small and large size swimming pools. These collectors can also be used to heat sanitary water (35-40 °C) in second homes that are used only in the summer or holiday accommodation facilities such as
hotels, camping sites and bathhouses, which are all mostly used in warm weather periods. The issues of winter maintenance to protect solar panels from winter frost are wellknown. However, this problem has been definitively resolved recently by our Sunnyday ‘On the rocks’ solar panel (Sunnyday SF), which ensures the same performance of the conventional panel (Sunnyday SD), but has a special flattened shape of the channels (5.5 mm wide) that allows them to absorb the expansion due to frozen water without breaking. Sunnyday is built with a particularly robust copolymer polypropylene mix, compatible with food uses and resistant to aggressive chemicals. These features allow water to be directly heated inside the panel, whether it is sanitary water or a swimming pool water, with considerable benefits in terms of simplicity, cost and efficiency of the system. Any support base is indicated for its installation, provided there is no roughness which would damage the panels, also due to the abrasion caused by the small movements due to thermal expansion and vibration induced by the wind. The new-profile Sunnyday SF series solar panel has been certified by Eurofins according to the UNI EN 12975-1 standard, which assesses its compliance with du-
rability, reliability, and safety requirements for solar panels, and according to the UNI EN 12975-2 standard after tests conducted on the thermal performance of the panel.
SUNDROP, A NATURAL CIRCULATION KIT Sundrop is a natural circulation system for sanitary hot water, to be installed on terraces or roof terraces. It is an excellent solution for second homes and summer tourist facilities, and consists of: →→ A 200 l stainless steel corrosion-resistant tank that required no maintenance and no heat exchangers; →→ 3 Sunnyday SF Series 2000 solar panels that ensure no overheating, no scaling, no corrosion, no frost damage, no glass barriers. Moreover, these panels are more efficient than glass panels in the summer period. Sundrop is a synonym of simplicity, technology, and reliability. DEHUMIDIFIERS SP AND SPW
T
he dehumidifiers series SP and SPW have been specifically designed for small pools and spas, where is needed a large drying capacity to effectively prevent the damages caused by the high humidity level. They have highly professional features and are designed to work effectively for a long time. The body and frame are made of powder painted galvanized steel, the heat exchangers are coated with a special varnish that protects them from aggressive substances, like chlorine. The SP series is designed to be installed directly into the environment to be dehumidified, while SPW Series models are installed in the adiacent room and connected to the one to be dehumidified through the grids available as accessories on request. All models are equipped with an electronic control panel, with soft-touch buttons, which allows to easily control all functions of the machine. The control panel, along with the humidity sensor and temperature, can be easily detached from the machine and placed up to a distance of 5 meters. The dehumidifiers series SP and SPW are available in capacity sizes of 50, 80 and 120 l/24 hours. Thanks to the optional devices these dehumidifiers are designed to manage effectively and in an integrated way also to air heating and ventilation. Low power consumption, high efficiency, low noise, their robustness and the elegant and unique design make these dehumidifiers extremely versatile and adaptable to many different environments and dehumidification needs and to solve all the issues that a moisture excess can cause, such as deterioration of the plaster, metals, mold and odors.
